Premier League season could be done as Mikel tests positive

by .

Arsenal announced that Mikel Arteta tested positive for Covid-19. In the ultimate kicker, it would appear he caught it from the top dog at Olympiacos after our exit from the Europa. What a stinger.

He’ll be fine, but this doesn’t bode well for the Premier League season. I hear there are quite a few other cases that will be announced in due course. The league will certainly be suspended, but it could go further, there is a belief in the game this could be it for the season.

I don’t even want to joke about the ramifications, though it is tempting.

Seems like most of the advice from around the world is that social distancing is the best way to slow the spread of the virus (and washing your hands, you animals). That advice doesn’t leave much room for interpretation, a gathering of hundreds of thousands of fans at sporting events would be the worst thing for it at the minute.

March Madness has been cancelled, along with the opening race of F1, the NBA, La Liga, Serie A, SXSW and a whole bunch of other social gatherings. The Premier League will have to follow suit and it’s hard to argue against it.

I thought this thread summed up the risk nicely– and why the ‘but I won’t die’ argument is very shitty.

It’s a shitter for the fans, but not as terrible as the thought of infecting your grandma because you grabbed beers with an infected pal at a local before the game. I don’t think anyone wants to be responsible for hospitals adopting wartime decision-making models for older people, no football game is that important.

Just a short post today, I don’t have much to add to this conversation, I’ll leave that for the experts.

All I will say is stay safe, wash your fucking hands, and get that invincible DVD in the player… it’s going to be a long couple of months.

Good luck to all backroom people at Arsenal that have been sharing his chapstick. Get well soon, Mikel!

And yeah there have been many cases of people appearing to catch corona virus a second time after already having recovered

It’s not clear if they had never truly recovered in the first place and the symptoms had just cleared up or if they actually caught is a second time

If the latter is true herd immunity won’t even be a thing until the vaccine comes along which is expected early next year anyway

Marc if the Chinese gov care about this primarily to maintain power then even if the intensions were dubious, I’d still have 100% supported the actions on this issue

Another question to consider is this, if China continues to keep a lid on this (there will be minor flare ups but I predict nothing on any massive scale like before) and if a solid vaccine is available early next year, will you still think the UK’s approach and the potential deaths of hundreds of thousands will have been worth it?

If all that is true- no protection after exposure – it makes a vaccine rather pointless considering natural exposure to viruses is far more effective than vaccines at giving immunity.

China1 – you are not considering different cultures/attitudes when you write that Britain should just do what China did. There would have to be a plague like black death that was killing 40% of population before brits accept anything like what the communist did in China.

Right now the coronavirus has killed significantly fewer people than annual influenza that thousands of people die from, people are not going to accept measures where no one is allowed out of their flat other than one designated person who is permitted to shop every couple of days while checking in with government multiple times to let them know exactly where they are on walk to/from store.

What exactly have I said regarding Saracens was wrong? You make a statement without quantifying it?

Regarding health service the NHS is a UNIVERSAL service which is free to everyone rich and poor. There are not many other countries which offer that service including Thailand.

Tony please stop being so ridiculous. There is currently no solution anywhere
in the world to the current situation and everyone needs to apply personal common sense in current situation.

Coronavirus was diagnosed in UK before it was identified anywhere else in
Europe and yet until now there are fewer cases and more particularly deaths
per head of population than most of the major countries.

I suggest you take a look at Switzerland one of the wealthiest countries on the
planet and one which has closed down its borders and make a comparison there.

When I read the nonsense written on Le Grove about Singapore I know just
how ridiculous the comments are in trying to make a comparison with UK.

I travelled regularly to Singapore on business at least 4 times a year for ten years. It is a small city state of 5 million people with a small border with Malaysia. So of course it is fairly easy to impose regulations. For the record
it had more diagnosed cases of the virus than Britain until yesterday.

Similarly it is absurd to make comparison with what is going on in Asia with
Europe. The population is much younger pro rata than in Europe.

If we are going to make comparisons between UK do so with Western Countries.Until yesterday Britain had made three times more diagnostics
than the United States which is more than five times the size and significantly
    more than France and Germany.

Frankly I am sick and tired of being told by you and others how great everything is elsewhere and how lousy it is in Britain. A lot is imperfect here
but surprise surprise there are massive numbers of people who would love to
    live here.
