FOOTBALLING GODS LISTEN IN (but can we make cancellation work)

by .

THE FOOTBALLING GODS LISTENING TO LT ASK FOR A POSTPONED GAME

Here we go everyone, top 4 destiny is in our hands, all we need to do is go to the current Champions and beat them 4-0 in an away game.

Simple, right?

Not really. This will be a beast of a game. Or will it? No, it will be, because we’re Arsenal and we are the best friend of ANY manager under a little pressure.

Pep G is going to go all out to make sure Arteta gets what’s coming to him. Mikel left the nest, he must be punished. He’s basically the European Union right now… my dad was all like, ‘free me from these crazy rules that don’t affect me’, then the EU was like, ‘How do you like queues at airports, bitch.’

Pep is basically queues at airports.

OR, there is a counter-narrative. The season is done. There is only one thing left for Pep to achieve, that’s a raised middle finger to the bastards at UEFA for kicking him out of the Champions League. Sane and KDB are coming back to fitness, will he risk them? Probably. But how hard will they go knowing they have a HUGE game against Madrid on TUESDAY. They also have an easy game against Burnley on Saturday.

City either rest players, which might work for us. Or, the players rest themselves, putting in a half shift.

Or, they absolutely fucking batter us.

Arteta has made us tougher to beat. He hasn’t been beaten on the road since he joined… he’s also not played a City like club.

I’m hoping that he packs the midfield with players that can put in a shift and move about. I’d love him to spring an counter attacking game, I’m just not sure we’re equipped to change the way we play so early on in the Arteta story. We can barely play the one way he’s trying to implement at the moment (personnel issues).

UPDATE

Ok, so the game has been postponed because the Olympiacos top dog has coronavirus and the Premier League don’t want to risk anything.

That’s the sort of elite strategising I was hoping for when we signed Arteta. He saw the sniffles, sensed the moment, and jumped on it. Stone-cold killer. I love it.

We were not in good shape for that game. Now we have the chance to bring some injured players back into the mixer. The opportunity to find a bit of form… and the big one… pray City are further along in the race for Champions League glory. Imagine if they reschedule in between a semi or a quarter-finals? WOULD BE SO GOLD.

Anyway, short post. I trust after 2 weeks, the chances of Arsenal players being struck down with anything are slim. Let’s wait it out and rack up 3 points against Brighton this weekend (if we play). That’s an absolute MUST.

On the virus thing… I really hope they don’t cancel the Premier League. Just play it behind closed doors. Let’s not lose our minds, there’s a way to play games without mass gatherings.

Before I go. CAN WE ALL SEND A LOL THE WAY OF SPURS FANS AND MOURINHO FAN BOYS!

‘I think Jose has changed, he has new backroom staff, he’s over his marriage issues, he has a new outlook’

Totally spanked by a young progressive young coach that basically said dissecting Spurs from a tactical perspective was a piece of piss.

‘Look at the injuries’

Grow up, those players gave nothing, there was no plan, they are stuck in 2011. You HATE to see it.

Cannot believe anyone would watch his smirking prezzer after and still pine for him… that after a week where he cunted off his record signing in the press. He’s poison and finished. He literally thinks he can call someone a fat bitch in the press and they’ll be motivated to impress him. He does not understand the kids of today, and I am so, so glad about that.

Right, see you in the comments. x

Atletico played a beast of a game however , remove Oblak from the game and they lose in normal time. Conversely , if Liverpool had Allison the game would have gone to penalties. The game was decided on Goalkeepers quality. Oblak made some absolutely stunning saves . Theres no doubt he is the best keeper right now. Liverpool crashing out of UCL is so tragicomic.

Arteta didn’t have the means to be a swashbuckling attacking player sid.The guy had limited pace, wasn’t technically tricky, wasn’t naturally gifted etc

You mean the type of midfield player you would deploy to cover at left back, pahahaha
Song/giroud were slow and technically not great but their game was easy on the eye

Valentin

Tonight proved that nowadays a goalkeeper who can’t play with his feet is a liability that cost games.
That just reinforced my opinion that this summer Arsenal need to upgrade on Leno. Despite being a great shot stopper, he does not dominate at crosses and set pieces and as viewed during the Olympiacos game his foot distribution is poor.

Habesha Gooner

FFS Valentin stop with your agenda. Leno is probably one of 5 best players we have right now. And he is not as bad as you claim he is with his feet. He is not adrian. We have so much to improve first Leno shouldn’t even be in the conversation.

DivineSherlock

Valentin
Leno kept us in the game against West Ham . What are you on about . He might not have a commanding presence , like cech for instance. Thats also down to our defence which has not had stable CB pairing since the last 2 yrs.

Northbanker

The irony with Leno is he is probably the best shot stopper in the game right now. Zone mgmt not great but very poor decision making in distribution – this is where he really lets himself down. That could still be coached out and MA should make that a summer priority.

I don’t therefore disagree with Valentin but priorities for the summer window are midfielders.

DivineSherlock

Northbank

Oblak didnt help Atletico last night with his distribution . He helped them by making saves.

kenyangunner

Sure, Oblak distribution was poor
Athletico needs an upgrade!

Emiratesstroller

Oblak is rated the world’s best goalkeeper and last night he proved it. He is not only a great shot stopper, but the manner in which he dominated his area was
the difference between AM winning and losing the game.

Okay he may not be the greatest “footballer” when distributing the ball, but he does not make the same silly mistakes that Leno has made on several occasions this year, which has cost us goals and matches.

Having said that offloading Leno is certainly not on my agenda next season with the other intrinsic weaknesses in our team.

Emiratesstroller

One of the lessons to be learned from last night’s game is that AM build their
teams from the back and I suspect that is something that Arteta is also attempting to do after years of frailty.

Ishola70

ES Atletico have a team that can stand up physically. Sure they got steam rollered as far as facing waves of attacks but that is going to happen to any team at Anfield going there with a lead and Liverpool have to chase the match. The match was quick and fast and you winced at thinking of a current Arsenal midfield trying to cope with the pace of that game last night. Arsenal’s main problem ES is the midfield not the defence. It is too slow and not the most intimidating physically even if little Torreira tries to put himself… Read more »

Amazing fans Liverpool.. Remember how the Kop stayed behind in 1989 to applaud us.. Yesterday if that was the Emirates it would have been half empty when Athletico “s 2nd went in

Davey

Adrian is a complete clown and should never be a top sides back up, his error was atrocious. Liverpool battered them but Ronald MacDonald has put them out.

Ishola70

A turn of pace is so important.

Players need to be able to up the gears in pretty quick time.

Atm Arsenal have Xhaka and Ceballos who can’t up the gears in quick time with Xhaka the most obvious and stand out in this respect. Ceballos relies on trickery on the ball rather than a turn of pace.

Torreira doesn’t have genuine real turn of pace but he has stamina and workrate.

Guendouzi has shown that he does have a turn of pace at times but his overall play is too erratic at this time.

raptora

Probably Ndombele will become a great player one day. But the reviews he’s been getting and how lazy he looks on the pitch… Fuck me, he cost spuds 60 million! I just hope this summer, when we’ll most certainly buy a CM or two, we don’t just go by the flavor of the day, but we go through an extensive scouting and thinking, collecting all the needed information that this one or two player/s will fit our team, upgrade us and become top class for us. When we buy players in the Summer I wouldn’t care if it’s an unpopular… Read more »

What percentage of our very limited transfer budget are you going to put towards a new keeper? Or are you telling us we can get a “World Class” new keeper for peanuts?

raptora

I’m getting annoyed at Valentin as well but it’s not a rare sight so…

Leno has been one of our top 3 most important players for a while now, but apparently he’s not good enough. He should take a look at the other 7-8 positions that are problematic in Arsena lol!

Dacoure has a turn of pace. But his control is lacking at times. Little erratic but very combatant ball winner.

Love how Klopp amd all Liverpool fans are all out moaning the Simeone masterclass . Klopp saying they played anti football . How the hell did they scored 3 then eh . They outscored Liverpool at Anfield . Not so gracious in defeat I see.

Valentin

CC, I disagree we have 3 areas that we need to upgrade. 1) Midfield. At least 1 agile physically dominant tall CM who can play on the half turn. All rumours point that we are going after one in the French Leagues. 2) a left side CB. That may have already been taken care with Mari 3) Goal Keeper. Striking department will depend on the extension or not agreed with Aubameyang and Lacazette. Either way that should be financially neutral. Leno may make those incredible saves, but look at the number of times he actually cost us games. Statistically he… Read more »

Ishola 70 I would remind you that AM played exactly the same way against Arsenal when they drew against us 1-1 with 10 men and then beat us 1-0 in Madrid. Arsenal’s defence is still very limited, but at least we are conceding fewer goals and losing fewer matches under Arteta. As I posted many times the club needs to buy one CB of the calibre of Upamecano and the defence will then be up to scratch. The midfield as you post is a different proposition. I believe that we need to bring in better calibre players. Personally as I… Read more »

If the nature of the midfield is not addressed and if certain people like it or not Xhaka has been the nature of this midfield for several years now then don’t expect great things from Arsenal.

A tilt at top four will be the optimum I’m afraid. The tops.

If Arsenal seriously want to move forward beyond just getting perhaps a CL place at best then the make-up of the current midfield has to be changed.

Marc

Every little sneeze, wheeze, cough or other symptom of a cold does not mean you have Corona virus.

“Dacoure has a turn of pace. But his control is lacking at times. Little erratic but very combatant ball winner.”

Well yes this points to a player needing some other good attributes apart from pace and lacking control of the ball? then that is a little worrying.

There are a few players who get by without a turn of pace but they tend to be the ones with a very intelligent football brain.

raptora

“Statistically he is the worst in Europe at making mistakes that directly lead to goals. Same level than Pickford.” Leno has 2 errors leading to goal this season in the EPL. There are 4 GKs in the EPL that have made more errors than him including Ederson, De Gea and Pickford. He’s tied 5th to 12th place with 7 other GKs. Excellent goalkeeper like Alisson had 3 errors leading to goal last season, he just hasn’t played much this season or he’d have made more mistakes. Hugo Lloris has been topping the charts in the previous years as well. All… Read more »

What the fuck does Klopp want opposing teams to do? Stick 9 men in the opposition half permanently?

Playing counter attacking football is a reasonable tactic against good opposition especially when away. When you look at some of the shit tactics and behaviour you see in football this really isn’t any sort of issue.

Ivan

Leno is not briliant in distribution, but hes not that bad either. Problem is worsend by our team that doesent really open up quickly when turnover happens. Its more or less same on any part of pitch, not just gk area. That is allso in part our current midfield failure. On another hand we need at least one athletic mf that can carry the ball upfront and is able to play one-twos to bypass other players. Ceba while not being fast is cappable of playing one-twos to bypass players and will carry ball vertically when oportunity presented as will Ozil.… Read more »

“Problem is worsend by our team that doesent really open up quickly when turnover happens.”

True.

You see some teams funnel out really quickly when the keeper has the ball from a turnover.

You see some keepers actually throw the ball at long distance to fullbacks or midfielders.

Leno’s distribution from the back is going to be associated with how the team plays as whole which to put it politely is “controlled” posession in early phase on the ball play.

raptora

I mean, yes. Add Grealish and Partey to our midfield and we possibly become world class in that area of the pitch. Imagine a midfield of Grealish, Partey, Doucoure (if Watford get relegated he’ll most certainly be available). It’d be our most balanced midfield since the Invincibles.

raptora

(Sadly it’s not FIFA or Football Manager but we should be allowed to dream)

Freddie Ljungberg

Ridiculous to think that Leno is in any way shape or form a priority in this coming window. To have him as a more pressing issue than Ozil for example to replace is mindbogglingly stupid. We need at least 2, preferably 3 new starters in midfield, CM and Cam is a must and a taller version of Torreira would be nice too. CB if Mari isn’t fantastic, because that’s the level we need to have as starters there. RB if Bellerin continues to have problems. LB since it’s looking likely we’re selling Kola. LW if we wise up and sell… Read more »

With the success of Manure and A. Madrid, more teams will copy this 4 4 2 defensive system. Yesterday, A. Madrid defended so deep even their two “attackers” were running just outside the box. Once they lost the ball, within 5 seconds, there were eight players defending inside their own box. The Pools attackers had no room to play. Only Ox’s long shots from outside the box were quite dangerous.

But this system won’t work against team also defending. No wonder A. Madrid is sitting only sixth in La Liga.

Freddie Ljungberg

Leno also doesn’t have many options in distributing the ball since again our midfielders are short and weak and can’t receive the ball under pressure with the exception of Ceballos and Guen, and our attackers gets outmuscled for every ball when he goes long. Hence playing Papasok at RB which hinders our attacking play on that side and stifles Pepe.

Leno is not the problem here.

Champagne Charlie

Val

You’re blinded by bias here. We don’t have an established back four, our CB partnership is a weekly affair, and CM is non-entity for a possession based side.

Add to that the Auba/Ozil final year situation and idk how you can can reasonably suggest we use a finite budget to improve upon Leno.

How are you forecasting that one exactly?

– what do you expect to sell him for
– who do you want to target
– how much

raptora

Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t we really stable in set pieces before Arteta joined? I think I remember us doing really well vs opposition corners and fouls up until the last month and some.

Now suddenly we leave players absolutely alone in the box to jump uncontested. We have to improve there.

Jamie

Ozil only has 2 more assists than Leno in the league this season, but yeah, Leno’s distribution is what’s holding us back.

Ivan

What we see now is Arteta team in alpha phase of development. First objective was to make us harder to beat with players we have. Next phase is chop and change to improve team and team play. In a hindsight last summer business could help Arteta in a way. We got Pepe, who in my book has good future with Arsenal. For a first season he does pretty ok if we take into account that he has to adapt and he is regullary marked by at least two players. I havent see or read anything bad about Saliba since we… Read more »

Raptora – statisticly we were better, heard pundits bring that one up few times during games.

I think it is one of those missleading stats that has more to do with change of play.

Leno needs adding to the ‘torreira list’ of players that might not be world class but would be absolutely bonkers to sell this summer when we have a squad full of absolute wank players who need replacing ASAP on a budget

China1

Un na all the best to your family. I hope it’s just bad timing and a coincidence with those symptoms.

Considering that collection of symptoms it’s interesting that they wouldn’t even test it. How did they confirm that all your family got a ‘regular’ chest infection? Blood test or something?

Moray

With La Liga closing and the Premiership likely to follow at some point there are likely to be big financial implications for the clubs. What this means for our transfer plans this summer is unknown, but it could have serious impacts for clubs carrying big wage bills. it is also likely to mean we hold on to players like Auba and Laca or let them go for peanuts.

Not a promising summer ahead for improving our squad, unless we can somehow shift some of our higher earners.

Champagne Charlie

China

No you can’t shoehorn Torreira into a Leno convo to suit your narrative. It’s not at all similar.

– GK has ONE established starter.
– CM has 4/5 established starters to allow flexibility.

Changing your goalkeeper is a big decision, changing a CM is far less impactful.

– Leno has 28 league starts of 28 (100%)
– Torreira has 15/28 (53%).

Valentin

CC, As I have said repeatedly before the most important position that needs sorting is the central midfield. However all the rumours point to that the club is working on that subject behind the scene. Until the club announces who and how many will be shipped (Torreira, Elneny, AMN, Xhaka, …), How many will come to replace them (2, 3 ) who it will go after and get, I am assuming that this will be corrected. Same thing with the CB position. Saliba is coming next season. I don’t think that we can afford Upamecano, but Mari may the answer… Read more »

Precisely how much business do you foresee this summer?

You can’t appreciate that with the numerous plates spinning that throwing Leno into the mix is a daft strategy?

“We need to upgrade on him”, for what? Top 4? We absolutely don’t therefore the need you claim is false.

You never answered how you’d imagine his replacement playing out. Do tell how much he’d get, who you’d replace him with, and how much is getting spent. Because this smacks of paying no mind to our budget or primary needs.

Marc

Valentin’s issue with Leno reeks of fat kid in a sweet shop syndrome.

In 2 or 3 summers then fine it’s something to look at but right now it’s worrying about the weather at the weekend when your house is on fire.

Champagne Charlie

Marc

Exactly, Liverpool were top 4 and in the CL final with Mignolet and Karius ffs.

A GK is key to title aspirations, but Arsenal have top 4 aspirations so this Leno chat simply isn’t sensible. We’re fine for now, other clear and obvious needs for this summer and probably next summer too.

Valentin

CC, I think that the operation to upgrade on Leno could be done on a neutral cost. He will still generate interest in the German market. Sell him and buy a replacement. There are a few decent goalkeepers who would be cheaper and would fit better in Arteta style of play. I never said that we need to upgrade him to get top 4, because I believe that properly manager this team would have got top 4. However I believe that this summer we should aim higher. Who is your pick? What’s their fee?

If you don’t think he’s necessary to improve to make top 4 then I’ve no idea your insistence that he “needs upgrading”. Personally see targeting Leno as an unnecessary complication to add to the summer.

Would sooner see 2 midfielders recruited, Auba/Ozil situation sorted, a winger brought in, and CB reworked.

Nice to see those balanced comments by Klop and that clown Owen. According to them, the scousers were robbed because a team didn’t commit tactical suicide at Anfield. Atleti showed how to play them. Shut up shop and wear them out. With any luck, the PL will implode enough for the Pool trophy to appear hollow in the final analysis!
