Derby day awaits

by & filed under News Review.

Late-breaking post today because I feel… err… a bit warm… and I… have a… k… kind of…cough.

SHUT UP IT’S NOT THAT YOU DRAMA QUEEN.

Quick post regardless.

LT has broken his ankle. We’re really in a bit of a rut when it comes to injuries. Some unlucky, some fatigue looking, some that are just the aftermath of people feeling sad that we really gave Emery 18 months. Yes, it’s a fact that sort of shit can play HAVOC with the muscles. The manager had this to say.

We don’t know! I could not tell you with points. For sure since I joined, the amount of things that happened is enormous, but we just have to try to adapt. It’s part of football. It doesn’t only happen to us, unfortunately it also happens to many other teams. So we cannot be crying about that. It is what it is. Sometimes it’s bad luck, sometimes it’s part of the game we play and sometimes things that we can avoid and do better as well – the coaches or fitness coaches – but it is what it is.

The only silver lining with LT is that he seemed to be fairly out of favour. I think he’ll be shifted back to Italy in the summer if we can find a buyer. We need someone that’s more athletic and about 6 inches taller. Super basic, but I do think this team needs more power in midfield. I think a profile like Denis Zakaria (6’2) would fit really well for us, though I’m sure he’ll have sexier suitors than us this summer… maybe we go younger and a little more inexperienced.

Arteta wouldn’t be drawn on whether he thinks the top 4 is a possibility this season, probably a smart move, the team is very up and down and we’re a bit all over the place.

Beat West Ham on Saturday and we are closer. That’s all I am thinking because a few weeks ago it looked impossible and if we beat West Ham it will look more likely. So that’s the only aim. If game-by-game we go and start grabbing three points and three points and three points, and then we’ll have a chance in the last three or four games of the season.

He won’t say it, but I will. We should be making a very good go of the next 6 games. We need to, at the very least, be in with a shot of top 5 by the time we roll into our stick run of Wolves, Spurs and Leicester. By that time, it’s with the gods, but if our next 6 see 5 wins and a draw, I’ll be very pleased.

One thing is for sure, the remaining fixtures are going to be about the kids and blooding them.

I have to manage the resources that I have at the moment, and they are a big resource at the moment. It’s not just because they are young and they can be good because they are already very good. Some of them can be phenomenal. But they can only be phenomenal or very good if they play in a consistent way and we get them surrounded with good coaching, with good club culture and also with good players around them. We have to support them. I’m ready to support them and they responded.

If we don’t make the Champions League this season, it’s going to be all about the youth next season and we’re going to have to rebuild like Dortmund are. I’d be happy with that, expectations would lower, fans would get behind the team, and we’d probably like the team a lot more than we have during the expensive years.

… but, it would be nice to make the big trophy.

Right, that’s me done. BIG GAME, really need us to be delivering an aggressive win.

” but if our next 6 see 5 wins and a draw, I’ll be very pleased.”

Fuck me – our next six PL matches:

    West Ham – H
    City – A
    Brighton – A
    Norwich – H
    Wolves – A
    Leicester – H

We get 5 wins and a draw out of those and I’ll be bloody ecstatic.

From the previous post. Nothing as exciting as you guys playing around London. I played keyboards with a group called Contraband in Oz. Don’t Google them, you’ll come up empty. We were a pub, weddings and party band. Had a lot of fun along with a few embarrassing moments that still make me cringe when they come to mind.

Everyday your blog mentions some element past present or future that requires the name of former head coach/manager Emery be mentioned.
Everyday in the comments you refer to anyone that mentions Emery as being obsessed and sad and finally in need of censoring.

And before your little cadre of Charlie, Un, Pierre and ( of course) Valentin rush to defend your entitled self, I agree that you are entitled to your opinion and the odd company you keeep.

  4. CazOnARola

Not expecting more than 10 points from those games. Be very happy with 13.
We need to beat wolves though, they are our real rivals, but it would be an unlikely victory.

Torreira will be a big miss. You cannot expect willock /guendouzi to come on and help close out games by replacing Ceballos.

Also in games like city away where they will dominate possession, LT would have started ahead of Ceballos

    Pedro
Had Torreira broken his ankle in the impact injury mechanism in March 2019, you would have put the blame squarely at Emery’s doorstep
It’s March 2020, Torriera has fractured his ankle, still yet you manage to name drop Emery as you bemoaned our crock-fullness.
    O what a happy day

“We need someone that’s more athletic and about 6 inches taller.”

Kante is the same height as Lucas, but he IS stronger. You’re basically right, but a short DM can be good if he has the strength of Kante or Makelele.

We definitely have a great chance for top 5 as Wolves will get worse as they juggle with Europa and Spurs and ManU are inconsistent.

We just need higher scores to avoid too many draws.

    Made the bench!

Hey Pedro, why have you have resisted the temptation to discuss the financial results issued last week? I thought that you would be all over the bad results by now.

  9. DivineSherlock

Jorginho is what we want Xhaka to be and Kante is what we want Torreria to be. Unfortunately both are lacking in some aspects . Not that I love Chelsea or anything just comparing. Taking it further it seems Ceballos is sort of similar to Kovacic.

With it being much day I’ll try to keep the off topic short.

I worked with mostly rock and R&B bands in my early days and was a gofer for the Genesis Knebworth gig at the early part of my music journey. It was that that gave me my real start in the music business. Right place, right time.

For theUK, Euro and US tours the bands were from Stiff records to the major labels including Jason Bonham when he had his band Bonham in the 90s. I’d take time off from my consultancy work to be in LA with Jason for song writing recording in rehearsal studios.

Funny the tech you mentioned was serious tech at the time.

I mainly used Soundcraft, which I am about to change (to 12 to 16 channel) the 4-channel desk in my gym at home that mixes inputs for the 5000 Watt system I use to keep the pain away from HITCV training and, of course weights.

I’m still researching the desks for the gym and one to work in tandem with the cinema as they are next door to each other.

Midas Martin & Allen & Heath was big in my days of touring so 24+ channels for out front. Hells Angels used to do the humping at many gigs; often running with the MM double bins over their heads to beat other HA humpers unload times from other arenas etc. The intervention of Turbo rigs made all the speakers much smaller but easier to manage when flying rigs at stadiums and large indoor venues.

I’m sure I’m going to get slaughtered by the usual suspects here, but I’ve almost finished having a state of the art cinema built at my home that I’ll also use as a music room for my son and daughter to write/record songs in and listen and watch music.

It’ll have 17 speakers with Trinnov Altititude 16 as the main processor. JBL Project Array 1400s & 880 from mains and Aime subs x 2 and 12 Meyer HMS – 5 actives.

    https://artwiz.jp/meyersound/hms/pdf/hms-5_ds.pdf

    https://www.trinnov.com/altitude-16/

    https://www.trinnov.com/amplitude8m/

    https://www.stereophile.com/floorloudspeakers/jbl_synthesis_1400_array_bg_loudspeaker/index.html

The project has been a year in the building with a year research prior to that, and because I live in a city I have had to build 3 rooms inside each other with the last internal being all floating wood covered with the latest acoustic panels. The will be less than 20db auditable outside the building.

It’s looking like it will be finished in the next 4 weeks.

My son is learning guitar and my daughter plays guitar and piano.

If you ever get to Thailand, let me know as I’m sure we have much outside of Arsenal we’d enjoy talking about over a few beers, as well as our beloved team.

Apologies for the post being long.

Can’t wait for the game and the rugby after.

With the City game in the week, it will be interesting to see who Arteta selects for today’s game, but I have a good feeling about the outcome with a 3:1 win for us.

That said I’m normally wrong with my predictions, but I still see us as winning.

  11. Aussie Gooner

    Tony

That is some set up! I will be in touch if I ever get to Thailand – I would love to share a beer or 3 with you! Don’t get me started on home cinemas! I collect 16mm films/projectors – I love the ‘feel’ of real film, the noise through the projector etc – I am very analogue! Vinyl records as well – thousands of them and a very modest old school hi-fi set up (Rega Planer 2 turntable, Quad pre/power amps and Mission 770s).

Back to football… Robbie at AFTV – his dad is very sick, hope all goes well. Got a bad feeling about West Ham – we can not sit back and lose the intitiative. They are looking for a way back and I don’t want us to be the fall guys (again – the gift that keeps on giving!). It is all about team selection/in game management. Mari, Martinelli, Saka, Pepe to start. Run at them, keep them too busy to mount an attack.

Not sure about Jonothan David, I don’t see what he would bring to the party as a replacement for either Laca or Abu that we don’t already have in our ranks. He is already 20 years old and playing at a relatively low level – would be a bit of a gamble – the type that monied clubs go for and discard if it doesn’t turn out.

  12. Tony

(Rega Planer 2 turntable, Quad pre/power amps and Mission 770s).

That’s a nice set up Aussi, especially the Rega 2 and no doubt you have a quality stylus.

I sold off my vinyl collection and an ex wife took all the CDs and tapes, so I only use DVDs, CDs and digital files at Hi Res DSD & PCM and WAV/Aiff where possible. Collected over 100,000 tracks from the 50s to current day as well as having around 8TB of digital files.

Like you I’m an analogue guy which is why I have the PA system in my gym with a PA Rack + and DSD parametric eq.

When I’m out I use a Hi Res DAC player the AK380 with Roxannes IEMs.

    https://jhaudio.com/p/roxanne-custom

With Hi Res files it’s like being in a high end studio control room.

There’s a great place for music that’s been around for 25+ years in Bangkok:
http://www.saxophonepub.com – my wife and I often start a night out at that place and it’s kind of reminiscent of Ronny Scotts without the smoky atmosphere.

Regarding the game I was thinking last night I’d like to see the kids starting including Nelson.

Would still like to see Pepe start on the left and Nelson right but interchanging throughout the game.

  13. Aussie Gooner

    Tony

The Saxaphone club looks like the go to place! Would love to have a place like that around here!

Ortofon moving magnet cartridge for the Rega with an Audio Technica MC for back up. I’ve kept a lot of my previous hi-fi gear including gems by Sugden, Trio, Sonab, Linn, Boothroyd-Stuart etc. If I see any gear in Op shops/second hand shops it’s mine! Yes I have a shed full of shit!

The AK device looks interesting – I will have to investigate. I know digital has come a long way in musical terms. I am currently converting many of my analogue tapes as we speak!

We need to beat West Ham comprehensively – no buts……..

  14. Habesha Gooner

Torriera is not someone who I would sell. If we are trying to improve the team, selling our assets is not the way to go. sell players that have proven they can’t be trusted over a sustained period of time. And no amount of coaching is going to change the limitations these players have. Arteta’s player choices have been baffling to be honest. And Now he is talking about bringing back a 31 year old miki to improve us FFS. At the start of next season his clock will start to tick. He is putting a rope around his neck before he has even started by trusting these players.

  15. Tony

    Aussi Gooner
If you come over I’ll take you to the Saxophone Pub.

Thought you’d have some cool stylus for your Rega.

    A true fellow audiophile.

I used an old Crown twin pot amp as a pre amp and still use the CTs 600 here as a bi-amp.

I prefer Crown even though they are meant for PA systems. They have a tighter drive if used specifically to drive bass in a bosom process. Had some interesting talks with their R&D people.

Your shed sounds like a haven for an audiophile.

With digital having analogue abilities these days and Class D amps, you can pretty much create the sound you strive for.

I use Sonos in a few rooms: 2 play 5s second gen and make up my own playlists for the different rooms: kitchen and Family room.

They are decent to add energy to the house but not meant for serous listening: just background music and not really expensive in the scheme of things.

I’ve just added 5 Netgear Orbi including router as my WiFi and wired connections , which supplies over 350 mbps downloads and similar uploads throughout the 850 sq meters and gardens.

    Would recommend Orbi to anyone.

  16. Pierre

Will be interesting to see what the line up is today.
I have found Arteta’s(unlike Emery’s) line ups quite easy to predict, today there may be one or 2 surprises.

The areas that could see changes to his normal premier league line ups are
Right back ….I will be surprised if Bellerin starts , cedric not ready , AMN out of favour so it could be Sokratis which although is negative from an attacking point of view , he will give us much needed height and heading ability defending dead ball situations, plus he can be a good outlet for Leno if he decides to go long and he can hit sokratis around the half way line, so there are positives with Sokratis starting.

Centre back….a big decision for Arteta to make if he replaces Mustafi with Mari, I have a feeling he may play Mustafi if fit.

Right wing…Nelson or Pepe…he will probably go with Pepe though Nelson must be pushing him hard , can always bring Nelson as sub depending how it goes.

Striker …Lacazette or Eddie…I think Eddie has played himself into the starting line up.
It was a mistake to not have Eddie on the bench v Olympiakos and it cost us.
Eddie is scoring goals and the team as a whole tend to score more goals and win more games with Eddie in the side.
    Started 4
    Won 4
    Goals scored 11.

Leno, sokratis, Mustafi, Saka, xhaka, Ceballos, Ozil, Pepe, Nketiah, Aubameyang.

  17. Major_Jeneral

Good Post Pedro. Just take alot of Pineapples and u will be fine.

    Pierre

Not a bad 11, I like the Pros for sokratis starting. I guess the defence will just have to deal with the Cons.
I expect Tierney to start though if Arteta feels he is up for it at home.

Most importantly regardless of the first 11 Arsenal have to start strong. The team conceded too easily against Everton

What was tierny’s last game before he went off injured.?

  18. Pierre

Tierney will need a game att under 23 level before getting a start in the first team ..he’s not match fit.

  19. Vladdy P

Hope the recent Mikki comments were just Arteta trying to beef up his value. Best friend is a pool fan and says Klopp did the exact same with the dross last year before selling them. Thinks arteta is doing that too. Hope he’s right!

  20. Aussie Gooner

    Pierre

I would add Martinelli and sub out Xhaka for Mari. Sok at RB is an accident waiting to happen but he has true grit and always gives it his best. But he is so slow! The alternative Bellerin is shot through and needs a long, long rest until Cedric is ready!!!!!

Tony – you must have better internet connections than me! Only 20k from the cbd but no NBN available, copper wire connections, as slow as. I am investigating satelite options.

  21. sid

today will be a win, Westham is quite ordinary and they dont play agricultural type football. it works in our favour.

    you heard it here 1st.

  22. Useroz

Leno, sokratis, Mustafi, Saka, xhaka, Ceballos, Ozil, Pepe, Nketiah, Aubameyang.

Eddie and Auba may score some goals but we can’t start with 10 men!!

  23. Northbanker

At some point we should be seeking to move Saka to LW, his real position

I would love to see Tiernsy and Saka combine down that left flank

Auba wants £300k in his new deal – no way will Arsenal go there again with a player who is probably going to decline in his next contract

We should sell at the top end of the market however useful to us he might be now

We will find a younger replacement at half the cost. King is dead…… and all that

  24. sid

sokratis playing is basically a 352. with Nelson as a right wingback and saka the left. Doesnt matter the hipster tactical descriptions it will be given. It has taken this long to figure out 352 is the best with the players we have.

im telling you this for free!

  25. Useroz

Indeed media already started the Auba huge wage demand stories ….

Not unexpected. But not sure if we’d command a big fee though.

    • Auba can sit out the 12 month remaining and go for free.

    • even with offers doubt they’d be big ones with 12 months left , and Auba isn’t quite 28!

Same old bad contract management on display.

Did Raul /Vinay emphatically said players either re-sign or be sold when their contracts get down to TWO years??

Raul should go. Haven’t seen much good from him really.

  26. Terraloon

    Useroz

If I were PEAs agent I would just be telling him to sit tight. All the cards are in his hands.

In 12 months he will probably command around a £15 million signing on fee and get a 3 year contract of around £12.5 million pa

If he leaves now and Arsenal get say £30 million ( which I think is at the top end of what a player aged 31 in the last year of his contract) he would be very very lucky to get more than he is being paid at Arsenal.

Other clubs make e same sort of errors why oh why is it always at Arsenal that top players seem to be able to run down their contracts.

As for Torreira it is highly highly unlikely that any club will looking to take him on a perm at deal with the type of injury he has just suffered. After all it’s only Arsenal that seem to recruit players with huge injury concerns.

  27. Northbanker

    Useroz

•” Auba can sit out the 12 month remaining and go for free. • even with offers doubt they’d be big ones with 12 months left , and Auba isn’t quite 28!”

He will be 31 this June!!

  28. UTarse

Must must win game today, arteta really needs to get his starting line up right.

Put AMN right back with bellerin in very bad form. Please no ozil.

  29. Emiratesstroller

From my perspective the Torreira injury was a consequence of a reckless tackle by the Portsmouth player. He may have had contact with the ball, but the manner in which he came across LT was reckless.

I agree with Pedro that Torreira may well be shipped back to Italy. The fact that
he fails now to secure regular starting place under second manager would seem to point in that direction.

There is no point in discussing a top 4 finish. I think that most Arsenal supporters are well aware that this team has underperformed all season and
that our expectations at time of Emery’s departure were exceedingly low.

The priority this summer should not be whether we play in Europe, which is
frankly only relevant from a financial perspective, but the impact on offloading unwanted players and recruiting where needed a better class.

Our focus should be in the defensive and midfield departments. We need to keep Aubameyang and I have got a feeling that may well be achieved.

Then the club needs to recruit better class of defenders and midfielders than
has been the case in recent years.

Realistically that is not going to happen overnight, but it is now up to Raul, Edu
and Arteta to rebuild the team and make it fit for purpose.

  30. Jamie

“LT has broken his ankle. […] we really gave Emery 18 months. Yes, it’s a fact that sort of shit can play HAVOC with the muscles.”

Quite an incredible line to draw.

  31. Marc

    Emirates

Agree it was a poor tackle – blaming Torreira is like blaming someone for being run over when they were standing on the pavement cause they should have jumped out of the way.

  32. Valentin

The most shocking with LT injury is that the Portsmouth player evaded any punishment. It was not even deemed a foul.
Does not matter that he got the ball first, his tackle was reckless, dangerous and with excessive force. Cards are supposed to punish incidents putting the physical integrity of players at risk.
If breaking the ankle of an opponent does not qualify, then no tackle against Arsenal will ever qualify in Mike Dean’s eye. Ryan Shawcross would have received no card if Mike Dean had been in charge.

  33. Habesha Gooner

No way should we give Auba a 300k week deal. That’s just an accident waiting to happen. Juventus bought a 34 year old Ronaldo for 100 mil ( waay overpriced but has star power) and they also bought a 28 year old higuain for 75 mil + 3 years ago. We should at least get 50 mil in this market for auba. Yes he is prolific but we shouldn’t be dependent on one player to score all our goals and be forced to pay him that much when it is obvious strikers in their 30s start to decline. We need to improve collectively. we need better midfielders and goals from midfield. A better creative out put and I think Martinelli(should probably be a starter as a C.F for us next season if Auba leaves) and Lacazette ( might have replace him too) Along with Nketiah and another winger will be enough. we just need collective improvement.

  34. Gommit

Just looking at the last 5 games we sit 4th in points accumulated (tied with Spurs in 5th). Only Liverpool (12 points), Burnley (11 points) and City (10 points) top our 9 points in the last 5 games.. it looks therefor a big ask to to get 16 points out of our next 6… But you never know, Watford just outscored Liverpool by 3 goals.

That being said all the teams around us have 6 to 8 points from their last 5 games.

  35. Ivan

    Habesha

    – it would make more sense to keep Auba for a season or two, and let Eddie and Martinelli develop a bit before we put our pressure of delivering week in all season.

Problem is Laca is out of form. If he could carry as Auba do then selling Auba would be senisble.

To sell both of them and go in the market for new main striker is even harder, cant see fee we get for both of them would buy a striker with Auba output alone.

  36. Gommit

And on a completely different topic since you like the COVID-19 so much. Since I am working in the BioTech industry and just came from a meeting with our Scientific Advisers (KOLs in pulmonary diseases) they all find this hysteria crazy and say that if we want to really understand and put this in context with something we should compare it with the Influenza virus which in an average year (2016-2017) infected 29 million people in the US alone, thereof 14 million visited the clinic, 500.000 were hospitalized and 38.000 people died (this is only the USA).

    see: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/index.html

That being said we should try to avoid the outbreak, but mainly by implement good manners (clean our hands, stay at home if sick and so forth) not by stop living like this is the first and dangerous virus out there.

Also they said that the thing we should ban is livestock markets in cities.. that is just new outbreak waiting to happen. Just wanted to share with you, I am not going into debates on what is correct or wrong in this, but somehow comparison is missing in all the discussions on Covid-19.

  37. Sid

Expect at most 10 points for the next 5 games after westham, could be as little as 6.

    You heard it here 1st!

  38. Habesha Gooner

    Ivan
I am all for keeping him but If we are strong armed in to giving him a 300k a week deal then that’s a problem. It smacks of desperation and lack of foresight. Dortmund have a 19 year old sancho and a 19 year old Haaland leading the line for them because they have Reus, Brandt, Can and witsel providing support. We need better creative midfielders. Chelsea were light in a forward position until they were banned from the transfer market and now have Abraham being a revelation. A goal scoring winger and those three forwards will be enough if we get better creative midfielders.

  39. Northbanker

Auba is great but not £300k a week great

We cannot have another Ozil contract

Sell to the auction frenzy and get a massive return – nurture Martinelli and Saka and find another striker gem or do a cut price deal on someone like Jovic

    Also sell Laca

That is the way out of this financial mess – adopt the Dortmund model

  40. Marc

    Valentin

    I agree 100%.

Players have a duty of care against an opponent when making a tackle. Accidents will always happen but we have a terrible attitude in this country that a “let him know your here” tackle that leaves an opponent limping (or worse) is something to be admired.

The exception of course is Harry Kane who’s dodgy ankle needs snapping.

  41. Marc

“Sell to the auction frenzy and get a massive return ”

What auction frenzy – Barca aren’t interested, Who are all these clubs?

Massive return – how much do you think a 31 year old with a year left on his contract is going to command?

  42. Terraloon

To suggest that anyone is going to pay big for PEA for me is just a pipe dream

Rarely do clubs spend big on over 30 year olds indeed in history here’s the top 7

Ronaldo. As we all know a total freak but a commercial dream £105 million

Bonucci. Flopped badly and returned whence he came in just 12 months £37 million

Batistuta. Turned out to be a one season wonder £23.5 million

Eto. Decent finisher but in later years a journeyman £22 million

    Bravo. £17 million

Makelele £17 million did a job at Chelsea

    Mathieu £15.8 million

  43. Receding Hairline

One can only assume Emery’s name gets dropped in to get some kind of reaction and get the comments section flowing, bar that it seems kind of pointless he is still dragged up by Pedro and Pierre any chance they get

  44. Ernest Reed

“The exception of course is Harry Kane who’s dodgy ankle needs snapping.”

Now now Marc, just cause you take your first 4th doesn’t give reason for wishing a cane for Kane…or does it?

  45. Uwot?

@ Marc- I believe that the word the meejah love to use to excuse a leg breaker, particularly in Arsenal’s case is “ROBUST”.recall hearing it many times over the years with Diaby,Eduardo,Ramsey & now Torreira.followed by the phrase “ he’s not that kind of player” to emphasise the so called legality of it.makes me sick. This all started when wenger started introducing kids & daddy men in a very physical league & when they couldn’t physically the phrase “ they don’t like it up em” was adopted by the likes of Bolton,Blackburn & the orcs( stoke)c*** ts the lot of em!

  46. Ernest Reed

300k for a one-dimensional striker? I would like to believe that Arsenal’s management team actually learned from the Ozil Experiment that you never re-sign anyone in a panic and certainly not for ridiculous wages. Ah, why am I kidding myself, this is exactly what Arsenal always do!

  47. Ernest Reed

Saying the above, they did show some extraordinary restraint in not re-signing Ramsey, so perhaps there is hope after all?

  48. Dr Emil schauffhausen

I don’t think any player should be paid £300,000, it’s obscene, Auba is a fantastic player but would rather let him go than pay that , we really need to adress saka’s contract though , it will be criminal if we let him get poached as he is going to be a superb player .

  49. Receding Hairline

As for all the Henrikh chatter, i don’t believe we should be looking to bring him back so i hope it’s just talk to drive up whatever price we hope to get from Roma. Knowing who his agent is though whatever deal we do end up with will be better for the player than it would be for us. Arteta is facing a lot of difficult squad choices so early in his career i hope Edu steps up and does his job.

Mkhi wasn’t terrible for us last season nor was he great, he made 25 appearances in the league and scored 6 times, not bad nor great. He decided to impress his country men though and sit out the final, i find it amusing how that has been let to slide by many fans, he was always used in the big games by Emery and would definitely have started that final if he decided to travel. No one stopped him from entering Baku. It was a personal decision not to play in the biggest game of the season.

  50. Micheal

Looking at our options, today I would go with:

    Leno
    Bellerin Luiz Mari Saka
    Cellabos Xhaka
    Nelson Ozil Auba
    Nketiah

I feel that Nelson deserves a chance. He looked hungry and eager on Monday and it would do no harm show Pepe that he is not an automatic pick. He might be a better impact-sub.

  51. Samir

What is it with everyone putting Auba on the wing? He is our main goalscorer and should ONLY play ST.

My line up: (Arteta will never pick it)

    ……….Leno
    Bellerin Luiz Mari Saka
    ……Cellabos Xhaka
    Nelson Ozil Pepe
    ……..Auba

  52. Valentin

    Terraloon,

Those were prices of 15 to 20 years ago. Any decent journeyman striker is worth double that now. Sebastien Haller went for £40 million.

PEA suffers from a deficit of image. He guarantees goals but not much. He won’t be involved in the style of play, but he will be there at the end of it. Most of his goals will not be spectacular and that is a problem for his public perception.
He is not viewed as an Henry, Aguero. He is viewed as top second tier striker which he may be when in reality he is top tier goal scorer. Any team currently with difficulty on that front will be interested. Maybe not at £80 millions but at £40~50 million there will be clubs interested.
The question will then be how much is he worth for Arsenal?

  53. Frost

“LT has broken his ankle. […] we really gave Emery 18 months. Yes, it’s a fact that sort of shit can play HAVOC with the muscles”

Worst correlation I’ve seen in a long long time. But you write good stuff in general so I’ll just attribute this one to urmmm whatever’s causing that cough

  54. Ivan

    Habesha

Im against 300kpw too. More in direction of 3 choices:

    1. Extend on normal and acceptable terms
    2. Sell for good fee (least probable option considering his age and current contract)
    3. If first two options are bad, keep him for a season and let him go on bosman.

Id explore first two options first but if he demands long contract of 200kpw + or there are only offers under 20 mil it would be better to keep him for a season and take the small financial hit.

It would be best to sell him and buy ready made replacment, problem is that calibre of striker we cant attract for fee we could afford so it kinda forces Arsenal exploring option 1 and 3.

  55. Habesha Gooner

    Valentin
That is so true. He would likely cost 50 mil at minimum. He is worth a lot if we are keeping our midfield the same for next season. Our midfield is neither creating chances and assists not it is scoring. Auba is prolific because he is in the right position to score goals. Here is the chances created stats and no one in our midfield gets in the top 10. Auba’s value will depend on our midfield investments.

    Surely you men max

He will have one year left on his deal by the summer or have you all chosen to ignore that fact?

  57. Pierre

Mhkitaryan , playing under a manager who focuses on his positives (Arteta)and not his negatives (Emery) is a very useful player.

To bring him back would cost the club nothing in transfer fee and he basically guarantees you goals or assists at one every 3 games.

To bring in a player with a similar output would cost the club millions in transfer fee and wages.

Plus ,look in the bright side for most of you, he would/could replace Ozil in the side.

It’s a no lose situation…the last thing we should do is let him go for under 20 million, he is proving at Roma to be a very influential player , but that doesn’t surprise me.

  58. Terraloon

    Receeding.

I said in an earlier comment I thought he was with circa £30 million and based on age and length of contract I can’t see who would offer more

  59. Gonsterous

News going around that arteta wants to sell guen. Would prefer if he went out on loan instead. I think he still has huge potential. Very young and can be world class if he’s put next to another good CM.

  60. azed

    Pierre

Mhkitaryan will have about a year left on his contract so he has to be sold.

We should be moving forward and not backwards.

  61. Ernest Reed

“Plus ,look in the bright side for most of you, he would/could replace Ozil in the side.”

    Your insane, Pierre.

  62. Receding Hairline

Pierre at Roma Mkhi has played LW.RW, AM and CM depending on where Fonseca wants him. He has scored 6 goals and has a 5 assists. he has missed 11 matches through injury.

At Arsenal in his only season under Emery he also played LW,RW,AM and CM depending on formation etc, He scored 6 goals and 4 assists in the league, Made 25 league appearances. I don’t know what you mean by focusing on the negatives. He was never criticized nor dropped by Emery, he was just inconsistent as he was at United.

You have been going on and on about him for a while now with relation to Emery and the facts don’t back you up.

  63. Habesha Gooner

    Teraloon
30 mil is chump change for auba if we are being honest. I don’t think we would sell at that price. Instead I think Arteta might keep him and try to negotiate a fair extension while trying to convince him to stay by improving results. We will get nothing good enough to replace auba’s impact with 30 mil. No top striker winger or Central and Attacking midfielders that are a sure thing are going for 30 mil.

  64. Receding Hairline

“Mhkitaryan will have about a year left on his contract so he has to be sold.We should be moving forward and not backwards.”

He is also 31 years old and has missed 12 games so far in Serie A with thigh and muscles complaints.

Fans like Pierre puzzle me, always longing for the past rather than moving on. And it’s insane to think anyone pays 20m for Mkhi

  65. Receding Hairline

Habesha with the right scouting 30m will easily replace Aubameyang and might even improve the way we play overall.

He isn’t the pressing concern though for me, the dude carrying on like an elite striker when he isn’t one is, Lacazette. We need to get rid and fast

  66. Aussie Gooner

Thanks for that, he’s actually scoring or assistiting at LESS than one every 3 games.

Very difficult to replace, as we are finding this season .

Why we let him go out on loan is beyond me.

  69. Un na naai

    Terra

Yes but most of those transfer were made over 10 years ago when fees were much lower

Aubameyang is in his prime and could lose two yards and still score these goals because almost none of them are due to his pace and all about his nose for goal and clever timing.

You get him to Italy or Spain and he will score 25-30 goals a year for the next two seasons no doubt

  70. Pierre

I’ll tell you what puzzles me is how the defeat on away goals to Olympiakos brought over 1,600 comments in a couple of days to Le Grove, but the victory in the FA cup brought only a few hundred comments since Monday.

One would think that this being an Arsenal blog , fans would enjoy talking about our talented youngsters getting us through to the quarter finals ….apparently not .

We beat Portsmouth on Monday, they play in league one FFS!!

If you don’t think losing the second leg of a tie at home you won the first leg away and thereby exiting a competition many hoped the club will go far in should get more of a reaction than beating league one teams then there is something definitely wrong with you and any club you “support” is destined to be mediocre

  72. Pierre

“We beat Portsmouth on Monday, they play in league one FFS!!”

And we had six 18 to 20 year olds in the starting line up,similar to when we beat Bournemouth away in the FA cup, and they play in the premier league ” FFS”.

Obviously, it makes mo difference whether it was against a league one team or a premier league side .
The reason the comment section was dead is quite simple .

    ARSENAL WON.

Leno, Sokratis, Mari, Luiz, Saka, Xhaka, Ceballos, Pepe, Ozil, Aubameyang, Nketiah

If you think beating a league one team in a competition no one really cares all that much about anymore should create a big discussion then you’re really beyond help.

  76. Receding Hairline

First off Pierre it wasn’t that much of a performance

Secondly the obsession with youth is beginning to irritate me, with kids you get inconsistency, no inconsistent football team is taken seriously. Some of these kids should be out on loan not playing for a team with legitimate aspirations of being a top team in England.

Yes bad news sells, you are a grown man, that you are just getting wise to that fact is surprising

What exactly did you want the talk to be about after Portsmouth?

Not comfortable with this Auba on the wings thing. He works too hard there and does a lot of tracking back and then is still expected to come up with the goals.

Isn’t it better to blood Martinelli on the wings with his energy and play Auba through the middle? Do we really believe Nketiah will end up a regular starter at AFC?

“Secondly the obsession with youth is beginning to irritate me, with kids you get inconsistency, no inconsistent football team is taken seriously. Some of these kids should be out on loan not playing for a team with legitimate aspirations of being a top team in England.”

How can you talk about Arsenal being a top club in England when you professed your undying support for that clown Emery week after week .

And yet you won’t come out in support for a bunch of 18-20 year olds who have taken the club to the quarter final of the FA cup.

  80. Marko

No idea why he persists with Nketiah when Martinelli is back. But I mean getting the starting 11 right does seem to be a problem these days

  81. Nelson

Arteta plays a possession system. It works better if we pass the ball quickly. I’ll see how often Pepe slowdown the play and also whether he tracks back at all.

  82. Receding Hairline

“How can you talk about Arsenal being a top club in England when you professed your undying support for that clown Emery week after week .”

AFC got to a European cup final and finished two points off third with “that clown” in charge and you never uttered a word of praise. Now you think we should have 7000 comments to show our “support” because we beat Portsmouth. A team more concerned with promotion to Championship.

    The state of you

  83. Ishola70

We’re on the march with Mikel’s army!

Looks a shit midfield per usual. Hopefully West Ham not good enough to exploit it.

And let’s see how Mari and Nketiah get on in a bread and butter EPL game.

Go for it boys. Win an absolute must.

Slightly contradictory dont you think considering your negative comments compared to mine about the young players coming through who are the future of the club.

  85. Marko

It’s like some people forget how garbage Mhikitaryan was for Arsenal. Yeah let’s bring him back that’s the way forward bring back a player in his 30’s who was shit for 18 months here. Smart. Really smart.

“Slightly contradictory dont you think considering your negative comments compared to mine about the young players coming through who are the future of the club.”

If Nketiah and Nelson are the future of this football club then we are in trouble.

Saka i can stomach as he has something about him

Not long ago some of you wanted the team built around Guendouzi and thought AMN was quality..lol….

There is nothing “coming through” to piss yourself over Pierre

  87. TR7

Pierre does seem to know a thing or two about Arteta’s thought process behind picking his team.

I am happy to see Caballos in midfield. Doesn’t look like Arteta rates Guen.

  88. Ishola70

Truth is out of the youngsters so far only Saka and Martinelli have really shown that quality in proper first team games meaning matches where a team is picked comprosing of bona fide first XI players.

Let’s see if Nketiah can join them. Let’s see him have a big game today.

  89. Un na naai

    Pierre

Na. I’m sure you’re more than aware how a certain sub section of Le Grove contrarians prefer to have something to moan and the float about than see us do well just to vindicate their views

    Saka he can stomach? Hahahaha
Hairline can just about stomach an 18 year old playing at left back who’s our highest assist maker this season and has been a revelation!!

    Sums him up

  91. TR7

I like Laca but Nketiah is more mobile and agile in the box. Perhaps the reason why he gets the nod ahead of the Frenchman.

  92. Pierre

    Marko
“No idea why he persists with Nketiah when Martinelli is back. ”

How about looking at their performances on the pitch in the last few weeks and you might find the answer.

  93. Bob N16

    Beat me to it Unnaii.
‘If Nketiah and Nelson are the future of this football club then we are in trouble’.
    Receding brain cells more like.

  94. Marko

TR7 Nketiah has gotten a couple goals and floated through matches. I get him getting picked over Lacazette but Martinelli has imo done more than enough this season to be in the conversation to start more. Why he doesn’t considering that he can play centrally well or can play on the left which frees up Auba in his preferred position is frankly beyond me.

  95. CazOnARola

In Arteta’s mind, Martinelli and Auba are playing the same role. Running into space vacated by the striker.
At the moment he sees it that way and hence he doesn’t get ahead of Auba for obvious reasons.

He doesn’t play as well on the right, so Pepe gets the nod ahead of him.

For Arteta, he isn’t competing with Nketiah for a start. Lacazette is and he has benched him in favor of Eddie.

  96. TR7

    Marko

I think Martinelli is competing with Auba for a place in our starting 11, not Eddie. Since he has joined us, he has mostly played at left wing.

  97. CazOnARola

Ozil plays as he is the only nos 10 available in the 25 squad.. Willock is not a play maker, but a line breaker who makes ends into the box and does little else. Plus he isn’t playing that well.
Before we bring in Ceballos again, remember emery played him as a 10 against Liverpool never to play him there again.. Infact he started playing Torreira there.
Just imagine how poor guendouzi, xhaka, Ceballos are as 10s, that they can’t get what of ozil who is chastised by everyone 😀

  98. Marko

Caz that’s fair enough but then there’s something with his mind if he thinks Auba is a LW and we only have Nketiah and Lacazette for CF. Look let’s just call a spade a spade here he’s making very very Wenger-esq decisions. Players out of position to accommodate others in lesser form and certain favoured youngsters getting game time at the expense of better more obvious prospects. I’m hoping we don’t do to Martinelli what we did with Gnabry and Malen. Guendouzi and Nelson to lesser extents.

  99. Pierre

Personally, I think Martinelli’s best position is up top as the striker , besides being lethal in and around the box he is also a pest for defenders with his constant harassment and pressing.

He’s still very young so there is no need to push him into the side if he is struggling a little with his game and what Arteta is asking of him.

Coming on as sub suits him at the moment.

Real and Barca are no longer interested. Inter are and figures of 30mn transfer fee quoted.
In the absence of a bidding war, I’m not sure if we can get more than 40mn.

    Thoughts ?

  102. Marko

I think Martinelli is competing with Auba for a place in our starting 11, not Eddie

Yeah. Therein lies the problem though. That the manager sees arguably the best two CF’s at the club this season playing for a position on the left. Again my biggest issue is why persist with Auba who scores for fun out wide? Why not start Martinelli who’s been a revelation for us this season?

  103. Thorough

We’ve got to put this to Ned in the first half.
The sight of Lanzini and Anderson on the bench scares the shit out of me.

  104. Habesha Gooner

Arteta’s squad selections have been mostly weird. Obvious players that actually have contributed to a good season are being overlooked and players that have been liabilities have been given second chances. I would hope he is trying to sell them if not he is hanging himself like previous managers did with some of these players.

  105. TR7

    Marko

My guess is Nketiah is on a trial from Arteta’s perspective. He wants to give him a few opportunities to judge whether he has a future at the club. Martinelli and Saka have pretty much cemented their place. Nketiah has scored a few goals off late, so not a bad time to give him a run of games. Ceballos in the same boat too imo.

  106. MidwestGun

Sup Ladies? Big match to keep hope alive. Not that concerned about Auba wide because he basically pinches in to the middle so essentially we are playing a 3-5-2… 3-4-3 when Pepe or Saka get forward. .. Not crazy about the 3 -5-2 formation in general because it leads to space to the corner flag which teams with quick wingers can exploit. But with injuries and whatnot it is what it is. Arteta has recognized Laca is struggling immensely and moved him to the bench .. I salute that decision. Martinelli gives us attacking option off the bench.. He just needs to sub quicker and that’s my main gripe with Arteta is the subs seem pre planned and disconnected to the match like a computer is doing the subs. Other then that Eddie has been in good form. So lets score some goals!!!

  107. Batistuta

Don’t make any sense with the whole Sokratis at RB thing, looks intelligent on paper but almost feels like he’s trying to squeeze him in there somehow

  108. gazzap

Papa at RB is just an arteta experiment that is doomed to fail. Bad idea. just play AMN until Cedric Soares is fit FFS
