Derby day awaits

by .

Late-breaking post today because I feel… err… a bit warm… and I… have a… k… kind of…cough.

SHUT UP IT’S NOT THAT YOU DRAMA QUEEN.

Quick post regardless.

LT has broken his ankle. We’re really in a bit of a rut when it comes to injuries. Some unlucky, some fatigue looking, some that are just the aftermath of people feeling sad that we really gave Emery 18 months. Yes, it’s a fact that sort of shit can play HAVOC with the muscles. The manager had this to say.

We don’t know! I could not tell you with points. For sure since I joined, the amount of things that happened is enormous, but we just have to try to adapt. It’s part of football. It doesn’t only happen to us, unfortunately it also happens to many other teams. So we cannot be crying about that. It is what it is. Sometimes it’s bad luck, sometimes it’s part of the game we play and sometimes things that we can avoid and do better as well – the coaches or fitness coaches – but it is what it is.

The only silver lining with LT is that he seemed to be fairly out of favour. I think he’ll be shifted back to Italy in the summer if we can find a buyer. We need someone that’s more athletic and about 6 inches taller. Super basic, but I do think this team needs more power in midfield. I think a profile like Denis Zakaria (6’2) would fit really well for us, though I’m sure he’ll have sexier suitors than us this summer… maybe we go younger and a little more inexperienced.

Arteta wouldn’t be drawn on whether he thinks the top 4 is a possibility this season, probably a smart move, the team is very up and down and we’re a bit all over the place.

Beat West Ham on Saturday and we are closer. That’s all I am thinking because a few weeks ago it looked impossible and if we beat West Ham it will look more likely. So that’s the only aim. If game-by-game we go and start grabbing three points and three points and three points, and then we’ll have a chance in the last three or four games of the season.

He won’t say it, but I will. We should be making a very good go of the next 6 games. We need to, at the very least, be in with a shot of top 5 by the time we roll into our stick run of Wolves, Spurs and Leicester. By that time, it’s with the gods, but if our next 6 see 5 wins and a draw, I’ll be very pleased.

One thing is for sure, the remaining fixtures are going to be about the kids and blooding them.

I have to manage the resources that I have at the moment, and they are a big resource at the moment. It’s not just because they are young and they can be good because they are already very good. Some of them can be phenomenal. But they can only be phenomenal or very good if they play in a consistent way and we get them surrounded with good coaching, with good club culture and also with good players around them. We have to support them. I’m ready to support them and they responded.

If we don’t make the Champions League this season, it’s going to be all about the youth next season and we’re going to have to rebuild like Dortmund are. I’d be happy with that, expectations would lower, fans would get behind the team, and we’d probably like the team a lot more than we have during the expensive years.

… but, it would be nice to make the big trophy.

Right, that’s me done. BIG GAME, really need us to be delivering an aggressive win.

Fuck me – our next six PL matches:

West Ham – H
City – A
Brighton – A
Norwich – H
Wolves – A
Leicester – H

We get 5 wins and a draw out of those and I’ll be bloody ecstatic.

You’ve got to take the small victories where you can get them!

Where the fuck is everyone today?

From the previous post. Nothing as exciting as you guys playing around London. I played keyboards with a group called Contraband in Oz. Don’t Google them, you’ll come up empty. We were a pub, weddings and party band. Had a lot of fun along with a few embarrassing moments that still make me cringe when they come to mind.

Everyday your blog mentions some element past present or future that requires the name of former head coach/manager Emery be mentioned.
Everyday in the comments you refer to anyone that mentions Emery as being obsessed and sad and finally in need of censoring.

And before your little cadre of Charlie, Un, Pierre and ( of course) Valentin rush to defend your entitled self, I agree that you are entitled to your opinion and the odd company you keeep.

CazOnARola

Not expecting more than 10 points from those games. Be very happy with 13.
We need to beat wolves though, they are our real rivals, but it would be an unlikely victory.

Torreira will be a big miss. You cannot expect willock /guendouzi to come on and help close out games by replacing Ceballos.

Also in games like city away where they will dominate possession, LT would have started ahead of Ceballos

“We need someone that’s more athletic and about 6 inches taller.”

Kante is the same height as Lucas, but he IS stronger. You’re basically right, but a short DM can be good if he has the strength of Kante or Makelele.

We definitely have a great chance for top 5 as Wolves will get worse as they juggle with Europa and Spurs and ManU are inconsistent.

We just need higher scores to avoid too many draws.

Made the bench!

Hey Pedro, why have you have resisted the temptation to discuss the financial results issued last week? I thought that you would be all over the bad results by now.

DivineSherlock

Jorginho is what we want Xhaka to be and Kante is what we want Torreria to be. Unfortunately both are lacking in some aspects . Not that I love Chelsea or anything just comparing. Taking it further it seems Ceballos is sort of similar to Kovacic.

Torriera is not someone who I would sell. If we are trying to improve the team, selling our assets is not the way to go. sell players that have proven they can’t be trusted over a sustained period of time. Will be interesting to see what the line up is today. I have found Arteta’s(unlike Emery’s) line ups quite easy to predict, today there may be one or 2 surprises. The areas that could see changes to his normal premier league line ups are Right back ….I will be surprised if Bellerin starts , cedric not ready , AMN out of favour so it could be Sokratis which although is negative from an attacking point of view , he will give us much needed height and heading ability defending dead ball situations, plus he can be a good outlet for… Read more »

Good Post Pedro. Just take alot of Pineapples and u will be fine.

Pierre

Not a bad 11, I like the Pros for sokratis starting. I guess the defence will just have to deal with the Cons.
I expect Tierney to start though if Arteta feels he is up for it at home.

Most importantly regardless of the first 11 Arsenal have to start strong. The team conceded too easily against Everton

What was tierny’s last game before he went off injured.?

Sokratis vs Felipe Anderson or AMN/Bellerin vs Felipe Anderson. I know what i’ll choose.

Tierney will need a game att under 23 level before getting a start in the first team ..he’s not match fit.

I would add Martinelli and sub out Xhaka for Mari. Sok at RB is an accident waiting to happen but he has true grit and always gives it his best. But he is so slow! The alternative Bellerin is shot through and needs a long, long rest until Cedric is ready!!!!!

Tony – you must have better internet connections than me! Only 20k from the cbd but no NBN available, copper wire connections, as slow as. I am investigating satelite options.

today will be a win, Westham is quite ordinary and they dont play agricultural type football. it works in our favour.

you heard it here 1st.

Useroz

Leno, sokratis, Mustafi, Saka, xhaka, Ceballos, Ozil, Pepe, Nketiah, Aubameyang.

Eddie and Auba may score some goals but we can’t start with 10 men!!

Northbanker

At some point we should be seeking to move Saka to LW, his real position

I would love to see Tiernsy and Saka combine down that left flank

Auba wants £300k in his new deal – no way will Arsenal go there again with a player who is probably going to decline in his next contract

We should sell at the top end of the market however useful to us he might be now

We will find a younger replacement at half the cost. King is dead…… and all that

sid

sokratis playing is basically a 352. with Nelson as a right wingback and saka the left. Doesnt matter the hipster tactical descriptions it will be given. It has taken this long to figure out 352 is the best with the players we have.

im telling you this for free!

Useroz

On form, would prefer Nelson to Ozil starting. Add some defence too.

Useroz

Indeed media already started the Auba huge wage demand stories ….

Not unexpected. But not sure if we’d command a big fee though.

• Auba can sit out the 12 month remaining and go for free.

• even with offers doubt they’d be big ones with 12 months left , and Auba isn’t quite 28!

Same old bad contract management on display.

Did Raul /Vinay emphatically said players either re-sign or be sold when their contracts get down to TWO years??

Raul should go. Haven’t seen much good from him really.

Useroz

Terraloon

Useroz If I were PEAs agent I would just be telling him to sit tight. All the cards are in his hands. In 12 months he will probably command around a £15 million signing on fee and get a 3 year contract of around £12.5 million pa If he leaves now and Arsenal get say £30 million ( which I think is at the top end of what a player aged 31 in the last year of his contract) he would be very very lucky to get more than he is being paid at Arsenal. From my perspective the Torreira injury was a consequence of a reckless tackle by the Portsmouth player. He may have had contact with the ball, but the manner in which he came across LT was reckless. I agree with Pedro that Torreira may well be shipped back to Italy. The fact that he fails now to secure regular starting place under second manager would seem to point in that direction. There is no point in discussing a top 4 finish. I think that most Arsenal supporters are well aware that this team has underperformed all season and that our expectations… Read more »

Marc

Emirates

Agree it was a poor tackle – blaming Torreira is like blaming someone for being run over when they were standing on the pavement cause they should have jumped out of the way.

Valentin

The most shocking with LT injury is that the Portsmouth player evaded any punishment. It was not even deemed a foul.
Does not matter that he got the ball first, his tackle was reckless, dangerous and with excessive force. Cards are supposed to punish incidents putting the physical integrity of players at risk.
If breaking the ankle of an opponent does not qualify, then no tackle against Arsenal will ever qualify in Mike Dean’s eye. Ryan Shawcross would have received no card if Mike Dean had been in charge.

No way should we give Auba a 300k week deal. That’s just an accident waiting to happen. Juventus bought a 34 year old Ronaldo for 100 mil ( waay overpriced but has star power) and they also bought a 28 year old higuain for 75 mil + 3 years ago. We should at least get 50 mil in this market for auba. Just looking at the last 5 games we sit 4th in points accumulated (tied with Spurs in 5th). Only Liverpool (12 points), Burnley (11 points) and City (10 points) top our 9 points in the last 5 games.. it looks therefor a big ask to to get 16 points out of our next 6… But you never know, Watford just outscored Liverpool by 3 goals.

That being said all the teams around us have 6 to 8 points from their last 5 games.

Ivan

Habesha

– it would make more sense to keep Auba for a season or two, and let Eddie and Martinelli develop a bit before we put our pressure of delivering week in all season.

Problem is Laca is out of form. If he could carry as Auba do then selling Auba would be senisble.

To sell both of them and go in the market for new main striker is even harder, cant see fee we get for both of them would buy a striker with Auba output alone.

Dortmund have a 19 year old sancho and a 19 year old Haaland leading the line for them because they have Reus, Brandt, Can and witsel providing support. We need better creative midfielders. Auba is great but not £300k a week great

We cannot have another Ozil contract

Sell to the auction frenzy and get a massive return – nurture Martinelli and Saka and find another striker gem or do a cut price deal on someone like Jovic

Also sell Laca

That is the way out of this financial mess – adopt the Dortmund model

Marc

Valentin

I agree 100%.

Players have a duty of care against an opponent when making a tackle. Accidents will always happen but we have a terrible attitude in this country that a “let him know your here” tackle that leaves an opponent limping (or worse) is something to be admired.

The exception of course is Harry Kane who’s dodgy ankle needs snapping.

Marc

“Sell to the auction frenzy and get a massive return ”

What auction frenzy – Barca aren’t interested, Who are all these clubs?

Massive return – how much do you think a 31 year old with a year left on his contract is going to command?

Terraloon

To suggest that anyone is going to pay big for PEA for me is just a pipe dream

Rarely do clubs spend big on over 30 year olds indeed in history here’s the top 7

Ronaldo. As we all know a total freak but a commercial dream £105 million

Bonucci. Flopped badly and returned whence he came in just 12 months £37 million

Batistuta. Turned out to be a one season wonder £23.5 million

Eto. Decent finisher but in later years a journeyman £22 million

Bravo. £17 million

Makelele £17 million did a job at Chelsea

Mathieu £15.8 million

Receding Hairline

One can only assume Emery’s name gets dropped in to get some kind of reaction and get the comments section flowing, bar that it seems kind of pointless he is still dragged up by Pedro and Pierre any chance they get

Now now Marc, just cause you take your first 4th doesn’t give reason for wishing a cane for Kane…or does it?

Marc

Ernest

Oh it does trust me it does!

Uwot?

@ Marc- I believe that the word the meejah love to use to excuse a leg breaker, particularly in Arsenal’s case is “ROBUST”.recall hearing it many times over the years with Diaby,Eduardo,Ramsey & now Torreira.followed by the phrase “ he’s not that kind of player” to emphasise the so called legality of it.makes me sick. This all started when wenger started introducing kids & daddy men in a very physical league & when they couldn’t physically the phrase “ they don’t like it up em” was adopted by the likes of Bolton,Blackburn & the orcs( stoke)c*** ts the lot of em!

Ernest Reed

300k for a one-dimensional striker? I would like to believe that Arsenal’s management team actually learned from the Ozil Experiment that you never re-sign anyone in a panic and certainly not for ridiculous wages. Ah, why am I kidding myself, this is exactly what Arsenal always do!

Ernest Reed

Saying the above, they did show some extraordinary restraint in not re-signing Ramsey, so perhaps there is hope after all?

Dr Emil schauffhausen

I don’t think any player should be paid £300,000, it’s obscene, Auba is a fantastic player but would rather let him go than pay that , we really need to adress saka’s contract though , it will be criminal if we let him get poached as he is going to be a superb player .

Looking at our options, today I would go with:

Leno
Bellerin Luiz Mari Saka
Cellabos Xhaka
Nelson Ozil Auba
Nketiah

I feel that Nelson deserves a chance. He looked hungry and eager on Monday and it would do no harm show Pepe that he is not an automatic pick. He might be a better impact-sub.

Samir

What is it with everyone putting Auba on the wing? He is our main goalscorer and should ONLY play ST.

Bellerin Luiz Mari Saka

Terraloon, Those were prices of 15 to 20 years ago. Any decent journeyman striker is worth double that now. Sebastien Haller went for £40 million. PEA suffers from a deficit of image. He guarantees goals but not much. He won’t be involved in the style of play, but he will be there at the end of it. Most of his goals will not be spectacular and that is a problem for his public perception. He is not viewed as an Henry, Aguero. That is so true. He would likely cost 50 mil at minimum. He is worth a lot if we are keeping our midfield the same for next season. Our midfield is neither creating chances and assists not it is scoring. Auba is prolific because he is in the right position to score goals. Here is the chances created stats and no one in our midfield gets in the top 10. Auba’s value will depend on our midfield investments.

30 mil is chump change for auba if we are being honest. I don’t think we would sell at that price. Instead I think Arteta might keep him and try to negotiate a fair extension while trying to convince him to stay by improving results. We will get nothing good enough to replace auba’s impact with 30 mil. No top striker winger or Central and Attacking midfielders that are a sure thing are going for 30 mil.

“We beat Portsmouth on Monday, they play in league one FFS!!”

And we had six 18 to 20 year olds in the starting line up,similar to when we beat Bournemouth away in the FA cup, and they play in the premier league ” FFS”.

Obviously, it makes mo difference whether it was against a league one team or a premier league side .
The reason the comment section was dead is quite simple .

ARSENAL WON.

Subs: Martinez, Bellerin, Lacazette, Nelson, Willock, Guendouzi, Martinelli.

Nelson

Arsenal XI Confirmed: Leno; Sokratis, Luiz, Mari, Saka; Xhaka, Ceballos, Ozil; Pepe, Nketiah, Aubameyang

Thomas

“I’ll tell you what puzzles me is how the defeat on away goals to Olympiakos brought over 1,600 comments in a couple of days to Le Grove, but the victory in the FA cup brought only a few hundred comments since Monday.”

If you think beating a league one team in a competition no one really cares all that much about anymore should create a big discussion then you’re really beyond help.

I was nearly right , obviously mustafi is injured so he’s brought Mari in.

Receding Hairline

First off Pierre it wasn’t that much of a performance

Secondly the obsession with youth is beginning to irritate me, with kids you get inconsistency, no inconsistent football team is taken seriously. Some of these kids should be out on loan not playing for a team with legitimate aspirations of being a top team in England.

Yes bad news sells, you are a grown man, that you are just getting wise to that fact is surprising

What exactly did you want the talk to be about after Portsmouth?
