Dismal Arsenal drop out of Europa

by & filed under News Review.

The less we say about that game the better. Arsenal put on their worst performance under Arteta. The team was fatigued, the energy was pedestrian, and we were god awful in the final third.

To make matters worse, we conceded a goal early in the second half from a set-piece. Just standard Arsenal, a total mess.

We absolutely controlled possession, but somehow, Olympiacos still looked like they were dictating the terms of the game. In the final third, we were a real mess. Bad decisions, heavy touches, and a real lack of a final ball. I didn’t ever feel like we knew how to win that game.

When the game rolled into extra time, you started to fear the deep block was going to win out. However, Arteta had a trump card, and it was Gabriel for the second 15 of extra time. He made the difference immediately. Olympiacos struggled with fitness and the live wire Brazilian made it difficult with his drive and energy.

The sub paid off. Mesut Ozil found Gabriel with a good cross from the right, his flicked header in the box sat up for Auba who scissor-kicked home. What an outrageous goal. We thought we had a winner.

We did not.

Leno gave away a stupid corner. We cleared at the front post, they picked up the ball, slipped a teasing high ball into the box, Luiz let it go to the back post, Sokratis was beaten to the ball and Leno was late off his line. They equalized.

It wasn’t over for chances though, 2 minutes into the added-on time and Auba was found in the box from 6 yards and somehow he fired wide. Absolutely horrendous.

Arsenal drop from the Europa League. Embarrassing, upsetting, but absolutely deserved. We didn’t show up, we lacked quality in all areas of the pitch, and we didn’t know how to make possession count. These days are hard to stomach, but they were always going to happen as we build to a brighter future. The key thing is that we learn from our mistakes.

Now it’s all about the league. Let’s hope the team has it in them to brush this off and pursue the Champions League the proper way, but winning the 5th place trophy.

I recorded a bonus podcast with Matt last night, we don’t talk about Europa and we do a nice section on Ian Wright.

Are you serious Pedro not mentioning Arteta’s subs??

Don’t let your passion for the man blind you.

I like him too. I really like him in fact.

But he got this one SO wrong.

This loss is on Arteta – I’m not happy about that but it’s true

  2. CazOnARola

The team selection puzzled me. We were ahead in the tie and we still didn’t pick s single ball winner in midfield. It works against mediocre side who can only sit back or press your DM.
Olympiakos did both. They never let Ceballos settle on the ball and at the same time apllied the low block.

So Ceballos couldn’t dictate anything and on the other hand who out of Ceballos, xhaka, ozil, pepe, Aubameyang, Lacazette is going to win the ball high up the pitch?

We lost out on both counts.

  3. DM

On another note – and I swear this isn’t a knee-jerk reaction, I’ve actually been saying it for years – the away goal rule should stop when extra time starts. It’s not fair on the home side. Essentially the away side in the second leg get an extra 30 mins over the tie in which their goals count for more than the home side.

It’s never been fair, whether we’ve benefited or lost out from it.

  4. CazOnARola

Also Bellerin is finished at this level but we were still level in the tie. Why would gamble and bring willock when both pepe and ozil operate on the right side?

    Should have brought on AMN.

  5. Temagooner

The way Leno conceded that corner beggars belief. Besides, the entire team was not serious. We don’t deserve to progress.

  6. Pedro

Willock added next to nothing to the game… and my word did Lacazette stink out the place. We’re going to struggle to move him on in the summer.

    That Auba finish deserved more.

  7. Graham

We build to a brighter future.

    With

    A disinterested owner
    Self interested executives
    Inexperienced coach
    Over indulged players

  8. Biggles

    That was terrible. Completely embarrassing.

Pedro, you can’t just chock terrible results up to some kind of learning curve by the team on a way to a glorious future. It was mistakes with the starting line up, mistakes with substitutes and mistakes with tactics and game management. Some of that needs to be owned by Arteta.

  9. CazOnARola

Its camel cased to give you a hint. CazOnARola is meant to read as Caz on a role or cazorla on a role.

I have used the same screen name in multiple arsenal blogs ever since he signed for us, so I’m still sticking to it, even if it is not a great screen name.

  10. Leftside

Where is this easier run of games that this particular Arsenal side are supposed to navigate. We’re not even remotely formidable at home to fall back on and our away woes tell it’s own story. Best to start planning for next season and devising where our goals are going to come from. The one useful player staying is a pipe dream.

  11. Gentlebris

Martinelli was one of the top scorers of the competition, but you put him on the bench for more than 100 minutes in the knock out stage of the same competition.
Guen could do a job in that game, but on came Willock.

You are barely two months in the job but you are already making decisions that are very questionable.

Emery had his 22 games unbeaten and beat the likes of Valencia and Napoli(in great form)over two legs to reach the final. I’m telling you for free, it will take a long long time before this guy catches Emery’s records, and Emery is an Everton level coach.

If you think you have a reason to hire a rookie for a job that could even crush a veteran, then you must know that there is another reason other people don’t make that kind of decision.

A team from Greece just knocked Arsenal out of a competition we badly needed to win under a coach that is suppose to take us forward. Think about that tonight.

  12. WengerEagle

I’m sick of Lacazette at this stage. CF that doesn’t score goals but has the ego of the one that does, doesn’t get much worse than that.

Same goes for Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi who are all just awful and contribute nothing.

5th place wins champions league this seasonWe are 4 points from it
    That has to be priority
Anything can happen in cup games Bellerin needs to be dropped
Need to sort these set pieces out. 4 goals in 2 games now from set pieces Need to address the lack of variety.
Lacazette shouldn’t be starting matches at the minute either
Don’t care if it’s Nkatiah or Martinelli up front. Look at all the cunts though claiming they back Arteta and hope he does well
One bad result and the mask slips

  14. CazOnARola

Pedro I’m not worried about willock not adding to the game. I expected that.

I m more worried about in game management and going for the win line it was the 90 min and we were down a goal.

Why would u take ur RB off when u have ozil and pepe defending that flank.

Olympiakos could have punished us a few times in the right.

Going to a 3/5 man defense just doesn’t make sense when u are still in the tie.

  15. Elmo

Is there a situation where 7th makes EL next season, assuming City are banned?

If City win the Coca Cola cup this weekend, do Villa take the EL place or does that shift to PL 7th?

  16. raptora

Arteta at fault when Auba leaves in the summer. We shouldn’t have been in a situation where Auba has to score with 10 seconds to go.

Martinelli didn’t get a minute in our two Premier League games. He didn’t get to play more than 15 minutes today. Guess he was tired.

No Nketiah on the bench? When you trust him to lead the line vs Everton. What happens when you need a goal? Owait. You play Torreira.

Overplay all of your players why? Mustafi got injured cause of him.

Disaster class by Arteta. Right on par with the clownage that Emery was. Absolutely unreal zero sense decisions. Not 1 bit better.

  17. Leftside

‘Same goes for Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi who are all just awful and contribute nothing.’

Yep. Yet, they are staples of this new Arsenal. We have too many questionable links in this side and may see incremental improvements and nothing more.

  18. Redtruth

Let Arteta make mistakes with another club and not at the Arsenal…
The search for a new manager must begin in earnest otherwise we will slip further behind next season..

  19. Gentlebris

‘These days are hard to stomach, but they were always going to happen as we build to a brighter future. The key thing is that we learn from our mistakes.’

Dropping out of a route back to CL is your definition of a ‘ build to a brighter future’?

    Now you bore me.

  20. roaaary

Mistake from Leno was schoolboy and showed his inexperience for pressure situations.

Aubas miss was shocking too. All too familiar for arsenal. Lots of problems and I’m not sure how we can address so much

  21. Marko

Same goes for Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi who are all just awful and contribute nothing.

Mainstays along with Lacazette. Arteta looking like Wenger mark 2 with his team selections so far and looking like Dustin Hoffman from rainman with his in-game management.

  22. Champagne Charlie

    Un

Is that confirmed about 5th place? Either way I’ve felt we’re too far behind the 8-ball on that one but we’ll have to see.

Now fingers crossed Mari, Cedric, and Tierney return to lift the side for the remainder of the campaign.

    What a basic bitch.
Been waiting for this day haven’t you?
    What a creep

  24. SWG

Pepe for £72m is still one of the biggest fuck ups! Dying for a centre half but we go and sign a YouTube sensation from France and patch the hole with David Luiz.. what can you honestly expect?! Pepe is actually painful to watch – just doesn’t look like he knows what he’s doing with the ball.
Bellerin also done, Lacazette.. is there any point even going into it?

  25. Major_Jeneral

Commitment from the start was not good enough from all players. They started the game as if they are 4-0 aggregate.Game management not good enough. And complacency set in again at the crucial periods. Especially Leno over playing it in the 119th min.
One mistake too many. He took too much liberty by conceding that late corner. Martinez deserves to start in goal.
Bellerin has lost his confidence to move forward.
For the manager he will learn from this. Setpiece is definitely arsenal’s Achilles heel. Defending for the corners is not good enough.
Substitutions was too late. Martinelli did more than most of the lads on the field.Today’s game shows why some commenters here have said that the top quality of some players is very suspect and it won’t take the team far.In sum Arsenal missed Martinelli’s energy in the first half.

Arteta very honest with his postmatch interview.

  26. prvhc

Pedro made no mention of the terrible in game management and inexplicable subs.No one’s surprised.
Pedro I hope for your and Arteta’s sake that this ‘learning curve’ is pretty darn steep from here, otherwise it’s going to great ugly real fast next season when fans WILL be expecting results.

  27. Samesong

If I’m a manager playing Arsenal next I would target david Luiz balls into the box all day long. What an embarrassment tonight. It almost felt like he was sabotaging us on purpose he was that bad for both goals. The 2nd goal though is unforgivable what tf is he doing?

  28. Digz

That was 100% Arteta’s and Lacazette’s fault. We are in DESPERATE need of a goal so he takes off our most dangerous passer and brings on Torreira, a defensive midfielder! WHY? Nketiah and Martinelli on the bench, Lacazette doing nothing. When balls come in to the box, Lacazette is either not there or too slow to get to them. Martinelli comes on and changed the game with literally 15 minutes to play. I said earlier Arteta is a clown with team selection but his in-game management is even worse. How can you not bring on Martinelli? What coach in the history of football would bring on a DM when we need a goal???? Lacazette is so slow and shit it’s just not funny anymore. Being good with shape but abysmal with team selection and in-game management is not good coaching at all. I like sone of the thing’s Arteta has done but he is not ready yet. You cannot manage a game that way. You cannot bring on a DM when you need a goal. I don’t believe we are a lot better off than with Emery 60% maybe, but it’s not enough. I’d bet more in relegation than I would top 4. Bye Auba loved you man!!!

  29. rollen

Dont see any bright future any time soon. Bunch of loosers with big egos and neewbie coach on the top of useless managment and unambitious owner.
    All Emery’s fault though.

  30. Pierre

It shows the fine lines between winning and losing, Aubameyang miss at the end was a killer.

Also shows that we need a keeper who will dominate his area.

Also shows we have got stuck in a pattern of play that is too easy to defend against, in that everything has to go out wide.

Also shows that we are still playing with too much fear through midfield in that no one is prepared to commit a player and take them on.

Does it show that we miss the movement of Nketiah up front , time will tell .

Martinelli deserved more time and made a difference when he came on.

Shit happens , that’s football, out on away goals.

Have to say their centre backs were immense.

  31. Gentlebris

We should be pointing the fingers at those guys who hired a rookie when guys like Allegri, Ancelloti, Poch were available. Why were they afraid to do the right thing?

  32. CazOnARola

I know DM, but like i said it’s my screen name on all the other arsenal blogs, I’m new to le Grove as a poster.

We also need to think that we have literally 0 money to spend in jan and we needed someone who would be willing to come in Dec without any signings.

My guess is we have no money to spend in summer either. Why would an elite manager come?

Arteta made the most sense because of his coaching abilities. His game management is of course going to be questionable but then what do you expect from s rookie.

Don’t forget, he did not sign Luiz, mustafi or Leno.

Worst case of we are heading the same way, Arteta will be off next Dec and the cycle continues.

But I’m hoping he turns it around.

  33. Leftside

    Un

We are 4 points off 5th but look at our remaining fixtures in the league. There are no bankers there and too many teams for my liking that need to slip up whilst we capitalise. Both look far fetched.

  34. Major_Jeneral

Personnel changes are urgent in the
    defensive department.

The situation is so dire than that of Liverpool when they didn’t have Van dijk.

  35. Biggles

The argument for the completely inexperienced coach was that he had special sauce and would do a better job than Emery. Tonight he really didn’t.

Arteta may well go on to be a great manager somewhere, but we are to him what Derby were to Fat Frank. The training ground, the place to make the mistakes and to experience the learning curve.

There’s must be some serious improvements to league performance by the end of the season. I’m willing to give Arteta time, but he needs to be judged by the same metrics as everyone else is. That’s what happens in a performance culture.

Pedro can’t give him a pass on this, otherwise it undermines all his opinions on Arsenal as a project and why Emery needed to go.

  36. Ishola70

    Nothing has changed.

The club need to revamp in the summer and rebuild the midfield.

If not Arteta matters not a jot.

  37. salparadisenyc

That was rough, total Wenger performance. Moment Auba equalized all I could think about was when and how we’d let them find net and crash out via away goals rule.

Looking forward, I’m in the bin Laca camp in order to play PEA thru middle.

  38. Samesong

This team isn’t getting 5th. Wolves and Sheffielf United have been much better teams this season.

We will not automatically come good with new signings either. We need a goalkeeper that is confident in their approach and centre backs that actually talk to each other.

  39. The backpass

I don’t care if Xhaka plays like prime xavi and makelele, if he starts our first game next season then its Arteta out, Bug eye fool included.. We simply cant move forward with those two in our midfield next season.

We simply have a midtable midfield regardless of what people here keep thinking.

Apart from Auba, Martinelli, saka, none of them would see the bench for city and liverpool.

Otamendi is better than every clown we have in defense.

  40. G8

Even if we went through tonight we ain’t going to win the shit..
    Not with this lot!
Better now than later I suppose
Arteta should learn now playing the likes of Ozil and Laca the full 90 mins is not going to make his young managerial career any easier!
Wenger favouritism didn’t work and it is not going to work for him
Terrible performance by everone tonight and bewildering subs to rub some salt into the wound !
Leno’s nervy jitters gifting them the corner and Auba s shocking miss at the end optimised the bottle job mentality of this team!

  41. Major_Jeneral

Arteta talked about bad game management closing stages and not properly defending set pieces. That is quite honest.

Only mustafi can be singled out as having a good game until he got injured.

  42. Redtruth

    Fans are killing this club.
Sacking a winner and replacing him with a loser is embarrassing and fans should hold their heads in shame for not spotting it….

  43. Luteo Guenreira

DM has some variation of Tourette’s that requires him to comment on every little thing that doesn’t look perfect to him.

  44. CazOnARola

Arteta is building for next season. He needs CF so can be a goal point.. We cab expect Nketiah and Martinelli to plsy ahead of laca, but auba will stay wide.

He effectively becomes the CF anyway, each time Lacazette, /Nketiah drop deep.

  45. Ishola70

    WengerEagle
“Don’t fancy Sheff Utd to close it out but Wolves, Spuds and United all well capable of finishing above us with the latter two likely to do so.”

Well Spurs atm look in a bad way so that is a sad indictment.

The Arsenal team simply has a few too many players that are not good enough.

As another poster said if we see Granit Xhaka trotting out for the team next season again just forget it.

  46. PieAFC

I’m not being funny, nothing has been confirmed that 5the gets champions league at all. Unless I’m missing something?

Arteta and Round will need to learn from this. Leno has been brilliant for us, poor pass from Xhaka back to him. But he should have done better.

Players switched off, from fatigue and mentally probably thinking it was won.

Any other day, auba smashes that in the net and we go wild with another fairy tale ending.

We’ve got to pick ourselves up, learn from it and move on as a unit. No heads dropping.

If players want to leave the club because of a competition were not in. Then they can go.

    Squad needs complete overhaul.

One thing I will say. No one can say, AMN was any worse that bellerin has been. He’s been awful bar the Chelsea game goal.

Slow, timid. So off the pace. Scared to dribble or even sprint. Poor guy. Injury has ruined him.

  47. DM

“DM has some variation of Tourette’s that requires him to comment on every little thing that doesn’t look perfect to him.”

    Err.. explain?

  48. Gentlebris

‘The club need to revamp in the summer and rebuild the midfield. If not Arteta matters not a jot.’

Ishola, when a big football club has been down for so long, you don’t hire an absolute rookie to lead it back to its feet.

Doesn’t matter who we sign, Arteta matters. And how many rising stars will want to put their future in the hands of a rookie coach?!

I still can’t believe Arsenal made such a laughable decision.

  49. Daniel Altos

We must win all our next 4 premier league games at least they are ‘easy’…because our last 6(wolves,Leicester,Liverpool,Spurs,Villa,watford)are brutal and I can’t see us picking more than 6 points…the final two are Villa away and Watford…two teams who will be in a relegation dog fight…city to be added anywhere in there too…we should forget the Fa Cup and at least try to finish top 10 because we are not going to Europe

  50. WengerEagle

    Ishola

You could add Luiz, Nketiah, Willock, AMN and even Leno arguably to that list if you’re ripping it all up.

Unfortunately never works out that you can shift all the deadwood, even moving on half of that list would be huge.

  51. Jim furnell

Yeah, they sure are top top qualidee, proper footballers the lot with maestro Xhaka anchoring the midfield, what could go wrong.

  53. Leftside

Yep, 5th isn’t confirmed to get CL either. If we can’t negotiate a tie over Olympiakos then we won’t fare very well in the big leagues. Far too many players of insufficient quality with the wrong mentality.

    Huge summer ahead.

I now agree that Luiz is finished at top. He irked away from responsibilities today.

“I now agree that Luiz is finished at top. He irked away from responsibilities today.Your thoughts on Mustafi.”

My thoughts on Mustafi are that ultimately he is not good enough either.

He does some good defending but he will still let you down in key moments.

He completely missed the header he was going for that led to the first Olympiakos goal.

    That is his problem.

Some decent defending but key errors thrown in.

    Not good enough.

  58. youdaman

Pepe slows the attack right up every time he gets the ball. That was a major contributing favour to our slow attack. Stops and checks every time he is in possession. Compare that to the way sterling plays. Too many slow attacking players and our one footed winger is one of the biggest culprits. 72 million !!!

Regrettably so true. Yes we didn’t deserve to win but the opponents would probably struggle in the EFL. That’s how low we gave fallen again. We signed two players in the window, who nobody has seen. Ripped off by Lille, and we are in the top six of supported clubs in the world, with. 60,000 seater stadium. 66. Thorough

    Peddlers.
I actually like Arteta. I’ll go with a progressive thinking greenhorn who has it all to prove than a hit and miss sojourner. However, this loss is firmly on him, on his consistent stubbornness to stick with some players, on his repetitive boring motonous predictable subs.
    1. Leno is a monkey. I’ve said it without number that’s probably where we need to start building from. He has that Ramsey puppy look on him every single time. After the players have staked everything to come back with 2 minutes to go all that this idiat had to do was hoof the ball out. But what did he do, try to play out from the back, give olympiakos one final chance from which we knew we wouldn’t recover. And he has that howler in him every damn time.
    2. Bellerin: Despite Arteta preaching to high heavens that he’ll only play players on form and with the right commitment/energy bla Bla Bla. Bellerin came into the team and has played every minute and our right full back position has gotten shittier. People blame AMN for being a bad defender but Bellerin isn’t actually better, and when you compare them attack wise then it gets ridiculous, we are so dynamic with AMN in the side. Bellerin keeps guiding the ball and laying passes when AMN actually can combine all of that with better penetration. Bellerin can’t even dribble his own spittle.
    3. Those 2 midfielders in front of the defence and playmaker: Arteta has decided, based on no sensible reason that Ozil and Xhaka have 2 spots while Torreira, Ceballos and Guendozi fights for the last one. It’s becoming obvious that Ceballos would be pulled out no matter how good or shit he’s been, and it’s always for the same player Torreira. These were the Wenger failings Arshavin spoke about, the changes are 100% premeditated. I think of the 3 dummies that got reinstated, only Mustafi has proved to deserve his inclusion. When all you can say about Xhaka is that he’s durable then we’re in big trouble. Dont even get me started on Ozil, a schoolboy playing out of position is showing him up in productivity.
If these failings become persistent I’m afraid Arteta would have yet wasted more rebuilding time that we cannot afford.
Are we cursed as far as coaches are concerned?

  67. Daniel Altos

But come on guys…what did we really think would happen when we welcomed back players who threw Wenger and emery under the bus?If this xhaka, ozil, mustafi, laca experiment continues we will be absolutely destroyed by the time we play liverpool…I am struggling to even see who would pay 30m for all those guys combined

Saka is not a left back or wing back, yet he attracts global interest, if that sucks . . . Send him off with Gnabry

  69. Bamford10

Leftside, Ishola, G8, Rollen, Danish, JWL, Reality Check, Plato

    Good stuff, all.

As with Backpass, I kindly request that you be here more often. Cheers.

  70. Olumide

I remembered when Leno said things were a mess under Emery and most people used those comments as stick to beat Emery.
Since Arteta came, he’s cost us 3 goals and we lost 2 games as a result.

  71. RockyRoe

    What a great article perdro….NOT

Not once do you mention the shit in game management on display, not once do you question what the fuck was torreira supposed to do when chasing a game? Not once do you question the lack of balls shown by Arteta by playing his favourites and the senior players over and over and you had this to write…

However, Arteta had a trump card, and it was Gabriel for the second 15 of extra time. He made the difference immediately.

….are you kidding me? Shouldn’t the question be why the fuck was martenelli not brought on at 60 when the Greeks were pulling our pants down?

But hey it’s ‘others’ with the agendas.

Sshhhh. Only plastic fans would complain about Arteta right now. Every real fan would shut up and support.

  73. RockyRoe

Well auba is gone. The once who need to go will not ofcourse, saka would probably be advised not to sign an extention when he has big clubs sniffing around. And you can’t really blame them.

Funnily enough artetas in-game management was brought up here multiple times over the last few weeks and got swept under the carpet…

  74. Spanishdave

    Leno must be dropped
Arteta has to get some balls.
Bellerin sell him get rid .
He said on joining us he needs to be ruthless.
    Words are cheap actions harder
    Grow up Arteta

  75. Major_Jeneral

I think Arteta is only making use of what is available atm. Xhaka days should be numbered by the summer.
Hypothetically, What can Arteta try out in midfield apart from using Xhaka and Özil.

If you place Pepe behind the striker rather than on the wing. That won’t work because Pepe also slows the game down at incorrect times.

Rocky stop wasting your time Pedro won’t say any bad word on Arteta, only thin veiled one liners. Infact on here, whenever you criticize arteta you are labelled an EKB.Imagine Unai Emery loses a home tie against olimpiacos with basically the first team after extra time and he brings on martinelli in the dying 15 minutes.I tell you what,it wouldnt be called a ‘trump card’…it would be called a shocking decision. It would also be said how we overplayed our players for nothing. This is what makes me shocked, some people have lost all objectivity here

  77. Bamford10

Incredible that some people here are still talking about this team competing for 5th place. Holy shit, people. Wake the fuck up. Let me make this as clear as possible: there is no chance whatsoever of this group competing for 5th. None.

  78. Major_Jeneral

    Spanish

Arteta talked about the issue of competition between GKs in his prematch conference so I expect him to follow his words with actions(being ruthless) . Once beaten twice shy for Leno now.

  79. RockyRoe

Imagine the post if this performance dropped under Wenger or emery….there would be blood, blud.

But Arteta ofcourse needs a full preseason and 2 transfer windows to hold on to be able to hold on to a away goal lead at home against Greek opposition in Europa league.

  80. PieAFC

We cannot be reactionary tonight. We played like a team abrupt of ideas fatigued.

Arteta will learn from his in game management. Who he can trust and who he cannot.

As much as I’ve liked Laca, I’m afraid he has to he dropped for Auba central or even Martinelli. We’ve got to prepare for the inevitable.

If the CL is not within our grasp, we need to start being honest with ourselves and start preparing for next season.

  81. Guns of SF

Auba I think will stay. I get that feeling -even though this has got to hurt.
Could be wrong, but if we do sell him, I hope we get more than 45m
God Knows we need a reinvestment in the middle of the team

  82. Marko

The club need to revamp in the summer and rebuild the midfield. If not Arteta matters not a jot.

The manager matters if he’s still making dumbass decisions and still picking certain types and overlooking others. I mean we could revamp whatever next season but if Arteta is still continually picking out of form players and leaving abject performing players on the pitch for 90 mins then we’ve got a problem going forward. He gets a significant amount of leeway already for some reason especially considering that he brought Mustafi back into the team, built the attack around Ozil and convinced Xhaka to stay if others did that there’d be riots. But anyway we’ll see what actually happens in the summer if certain players are still here then Mikel Arteta will be considered a bad hire

  83. Dissenter

Martinez is not in Leno’s class so stop laying into Leno. Essentially Leno has no one pushing him to stay at his best.

What about all the buffoon players that were slating Emery over and over again?I’m sure Arteta is communicating his tactics to them properly.

  84. Major_Jeneral

The line between objectivity and subjectivity for Arsenal fans is very thin. When a player is starting you complain he supposed to be benched when the other who was bench is allowed to start you say the first one ought to have started.

    Just choose one side already.

  85. PieAFC

Pompey and fratton park will not be an easy place to go. They’re doing alright this season.

Had we progressed tonight some momentum would be there.

Definitely need a reaction on Monday. Arteta needs to see the players react.

  86. Ishola70

    Marko

That’s why I said Arteta will not matter if certain players are still relied upon next season.

Do we want to see Arteta try to turn water into wine but ultimately fail no? No.

We simply need new faces in midfield as a starter.

  87. Ernest Reed

“Arsenal drop from the Europa League. Embarrassing, upsetting, but absolutely deserved”

Perfect summation, Pedro. This group of players, year over year, flatter to deceive like no other.

  88. Tippitappi

lets be honest…. I hope the scoucers get the unbeaten record & the invincibles tag it’s been a millstone around the neck for years which the club ‘ not the players ‘ have been living off for years to excuse themselves of properly investing on the field ,it needs to be jettisoned now starting with relieving ourselves of any wenger connections inc Holding & Bellerin both great players in their own right but tainted . I dont like dragging this old shit up but it was all there on open display tonight the crap defence the complacency the poor final ball the naivety of approach despite 20 odd years euro experience (Monaco H 2 3 ) classic example. Any way I suppose what I’m saying is their incapable of change under a comatosed owner & yes men .Its’s not that Olympiacos are a side of any repute

  89. PieAFC

My critique of Arteta is a worrying trend of favouritism for some players. Especially a few senior ones.

Perhaps tonight is the night to start the massive cull we need.

    Chop chop.

  90. Edu me a favour

So much to work on – but realistically- why are people not giving Olympiacos the credit they deserve ?

They were a champions league team that dropped DOWN to OUR level

A bit arrogant to think we should be beating them comfortably

If we can’t beat the CL team that dropped down this season then we have no business looking to be in it next season – the outcome would only be us dropping back down to europa if we’re lucky

I’ve enjoyed what Arteta has brought to the table but he has to learn from this tonight – don’t let loyalty to certain players cost you the backing of the fans

  91. Dissenter

    Pedro,
“Arsenal drop from the Europa League. Embarrassing, upsetting, but absolutely deserved. We didn’t show up, we lacked quality in all areas of the pitch, and we didn’t know how to make possession count. These days are hard to stomach, but they were always going to happen as we build to a brighter future. The key thing is that we learn from our mistakes”

I see what you did there
Lots of negative descriptors to make it seem like you’re hard hitting and frank but then you just seemed to embrace failure like a pusillanimous choker.

You can’t leave out Arteta in this one, my man.
The buck stops at his table- he shit the bed. Lets just hope he’s learned to stop accepting all the smoke certain players were blowing up his arse.

  92. Ernest Reed

“Essentially the away side in the second leg get an extra 30 mins over the tie in which their goals count for more than the home side.”

Really DM? How bout taking care of fucking business at home like any home team should!

  93. PieAFC

    Edu,

    100%.

Laca has to be dropped now. Luis and bellerin. Certain players will cost him dearly.

He has to stamp some authority on this now. Ceballos wasn’t all that either today. Xhaka gave the ball away loads.

Monday and the game after some players need leaving out .

  94. Major_Jeneral

    At SpanishDave

Let’s wait and see. He already talked about GK in ref to Caballero taking Courtois place at Chelsea lineup. If it was Wenger Martinez would have started both Olympiacos games.

Anyone that thinks Arteta has favorites has no proof for this. Yes his substitutions especially to bring in Martinelli was late.
But this was the same player that was trusted to play the game at Chelsea even when the team was 10 man down.

  95. Ernest Reed

“It’s going to be depressing if we keep this manager for next season..”

Red, in all honesty, if you are not part of the solution then you clearly are part of the problem. Again, give Arteta a fair chance – he deserves that much at the very least.

Honestly are you even an Arsenal supporter?

  96. RockyRoe

    Daniel

I have a fear that Arteta is a very good coach but might not be a very good manager.

There is ofcourse a world of difference in coaching and managing a team.

I mean I seriously would like to understand what was going in his head when things were looking dire in the 1st half, what motivates him keep things as is till the 70th minute? Why does he keep playing pea on the left and laca in the middle, I mean if it was working I can understand shafting pea to the left.

You see your team playing dire football and cf not in the game, you have a hungry 18 year old having a breakthrough season on the bench. Exactly what prompts the torreira sub?

  97. Ishola70

    Decent point Edu.

But it is always the way.

Over-rate your team but under-rate the opposition.

This Olympiakos side gave Bayern Munich a match in one of the CL group matches going down 3-2.

And we all know Arsenal are on a lower rung than Bayern Munich.

  98. Dissenter

“Anyone that thinks Arteta has favorites has no proof for this.”

You don’t have powers of observation?
What proof are you seeking; a leaked video showing Arteta and certain players having an orgy?
Most manager has favorites, Arteta is no different.

  99. PieAFC

    Rocky roe

What you’re are asking are valid points.

Everyone is allowed to ask them.

When youre winning games and don’t lose. You assume and see things differently and are ok.

It’s in defeats and abject performances like that, tou expect a manager to see what’s wrong.

I’d like to believe that, after tonight some things will have to change for our season to move forward and at least finish on a high.

  100. Marko

I wouldn’t actively seek to sell Leno he’s the least of our problems but if a German club were to come in for him I’d probably sell him. He’s good but I think he’s fairly easily upgradable. Andre Onana for one Henderson at Sheffield United is another. Lafont as well is another with great potential. Always liked Anthony Lopes as well.

  101. Ishola70

    Dissenter

Do you still want to see Xhaka get a standing ovation from the home crowd soon as you wished a few weeks ago?

What an embarrassing comment from you that was.

And you want to go after Pedro regarding Arteta but are quite happy to indulge dross players at the club.

  102. PieAFC

Laca has to be dropped. It’s clear as day, them 2 goals have done nothing for his overall game and it’s becoming a detriment to the way we play.

  103. Ernest Reed

Sometimes its amusing PieAFC, but lately its like listening to Rainman, over and over. At least get some new material!
