Listen, I’ll take the win. Away from home, Arteta’s first European away game, a victory, a clean sheet, and a very valuable away goal.

That’s all we need at this stage.

We’re in our worst season in 400 years, we’re shite on the road, I’m struggling to believe that anyone is out there at the moment bitching about the performance.

The first half wasn’t exactly sexy. From a defensive perspective, we were a bit loose and we gifted chances to a team that were well off the mark in the final third. It does have to be noted, most smart clubs in Europe don’t blow their load in the first thirty, staying in contention is the name of the game, so by that barometer, we did a good job.

The second half was incredibly bland, but the Greeks couldn’t keep up the same intensity. Bernd Leno was called upon to make some good saves, but I have to break to it people, most keepers at top clubs have to make saves. We also had some good chances that we spurned, our game in the final third is still pretty bland, but we’re at least venturing into the opposition half and players are still suffering from a lack of confidence.

It wasn’t a great day at the office for Martinelli. His decision making was poor and he had a weird moment with Xhaka. I think he was pulled early to save him from himself. A great talent, but we have to remember he’s young, and inconsistency is just part of the game.

We nicked it in the end though. Mustafi played a stunning long ball to Auba on the right, he showed tight control and rolled it Saka, he hit a low cross to Lacazette and the finish was perfect.

You can’t argue that sort of performance in Europe. We have suffered it over and over again. At this level, it’s about making the least mistakes and waiting for your moment. We did that and took our chance.

We still have a lot to do in the home leg, but we own the away goal and they’ll have to come at us… dangerous game with the attacking players we have on call.

So what do we have? 3 wins in 4. 3 clean sheets in a row. 2020 unbeaten. The squad looking like they are beginning to believe.

… and what of that squad? Xhaka, Mustafi and Luiz are looking superb. Even Sokratis had a solid game last night. Players people had in the bin… including me… are playing far beyond our expectations.

So why are people moaning?

There’s a dog shit website peddling deeply thought out 9 game analysis designed as Spurs fan catnip that’s pushing numbers to make it seem like we’re not moving forward, but that shouldn’t worry people, it’s a piss poor analysis. If you are comparing Emery’s last X amount of game with Arteta’s first X amount of games, you shouldn’t be allowed near the internet. Arteta picked up a sinking ship and a group of players those exact same people said were uncoachable. We’re now 2 months in and we’re seeing the folly of that narrative. Things are steadily improving and the vampires are struggling because they don’t know where to pivot – shit data formulated by clickbait merchants isn’t a counter to what’s going on. Fact is, we have the right coach, the players are on board and things are steadily moving forwards.

We have a huge game on Sunday with a massive point to prove. Hopefully, the squad can make another statement about the new regime.

Onwards and upwards.

Morning all,

Performance wasn’t great last night and didn’t like the line up either. But an away win with an away goal and clean sheet. I’ll take it.

Be interesting to see how we balance the line up for Sunday after having played the majority of starters yesterday.

zaco

you can’t complain of the teams loosing to teams they should be beating only to turn around to complain when such teams are beating at their on their own ground, the performance may not be peak Henkies’ Bayern but the fact that the boys gave it their all and came out with a victory is worthy of celebration.
bring on Everton at the weekend

zaco

*you can’t complain of the team (Arsenal)

“It wasn’t a great day at the office for Martinelli. ”

Martinelli had one piece of outstanding skill early in the game when Lacazette should have buried the chance.

However, Martinelli was a little disappointing again .

Maybe the slight doubt about his game that Arteta showed last week has knocked martinelli’s confidence as he didn’t look as positive on the ball as usual.

I do expect him to bounce back though.

Pierre

RP
I would say Pepe, Ozil, Bellerin will come back in at the weekend , plus it wouldn’t surprise me to see Eddie get another start and Lacazette drop to the bench.

Romford Pele

Pierre – I don’t think you can drop Laca to the bench now that he’s scoring again. Plus despite my massive frustrations with him, he’s a much better striker than Eddie and still more reliable at this stage.

Would agree on Ozil, Pepe and Bellerin though. Maybe Torreira too if he’s recovered from his illness as Everton are good in transition.

Pierre

RP
Personally I’m with you , I would go with Lacazette as he is amongst the goals again.

However, Arteta does like to come out with a surprise as with the inclusion of sokratis last night and playing Ceballos and Nketiah instead of Lacazette and Torreira v Newcastle..

Lacazette is an all round better striker at present, though I think Eddie has better movement off the ball…

Obum

If we win the Europa and make it to 5th in the league with Mustafi playing the way he has been playing. Will anyone want to give him a chance for next season? So as Xhaka

Ahmeducrazy

Obum

I would give him a chance. Clean slate right? As long as he consciously tries to not make mistakes then he should be ok. I wouldn’t have him as a starter though. Probably gets on the bench and rotates for fitness. He is astounding me though.

Romford Pele

Pierre – yes for sure. Hard to know what Arteta deems his strongest line up at the moment. Everton are a big threat with Richarlison and co in transition so we’ll need to be wary.

I agree that Eddie is quicker and has better movement off the ball. I just don’t think he’s Arsenal quality personally.

Romford Pele

As has been said a few times, the system that Arteta has put in place has benefitted the defenders more than anybody else. I think I saw last night that we’ve kept 6 clean sheets in the 11 games so far. It’s making our defensive players look better as we’re more compact and conceding less shots on goal. That said imagine what could be done with actual athletic CBs in this system. I would sell Mustafi and Sokratis in the summer and keep Luiz personally.

Never never analyse, disect, concern yourself or stress about a Loosers Cup match. Its irrelevant if you win it,loose it,draw or or even how you have played it. Its filth. It’s all about navigating it and from my point of view – exiting it ASAP. Totally vile stuff. Real soccer Sunday. Proper. Everton are a powerful, athletic ,speedy, well rested but not technically adroit team. Our defence will have the work cut out against Calvert Lewis and Theo on the counter. Yesterday one poster asked the question whether Arteta knew what was our best Starting X1. I posted that probably 10 out of 11 positions was now settled with one position in central midfield to be settled with Ceballos competing with Torreira and Guendouzi for selection. Having a settled side, which did not exist under Emery is a recipe for improved understanding and performance. That applies in particular to our defence where in spite of the ongoing criticisms we have seen considerable improvements which did not happen under either Wenger and Emery. The fact is that in 12 games since Arteta… Read more »

Eddie has everything in his game to be a top striker.

Good technique, movement , heading and is a poacher in the box.
Decent pace, decent shot and brings players into the game.

However, it hasn’t quite happened for him and I would say that this season he is at the crossroads of his Arsenal career.

Could go either way.

Romford Pele

Don’t rate Willock at all. Can’t wait until ESR is back next season.

Nelson

Yesterday, I gave Arteta credit of selecting Leon instead of Martinez. But I don’t like playing Auba as the right wing back until Martinelli was subbed out. If he needed a right wing back, AMN could do the same job. At least he has corrected that mistake and Auba has contributed to the winning goal.

Not all young player has inconsistency. Unlike Martinelli, Saka played with confident. If Raul don’t find a way to keep him, he should be fired.

Stroller The problem that a striker has is if he continually makes runs and the ball isn’t delivered , the striker will stop making the runs. All the central midfielders are culpable, even Ozil. Pepe and Saka are the players taking risks with the ball , our central midfielders are in the main just recycling the ball. Is this a managerial decision, maybe . The final defence splitting ball from midfield is the most difficult ball to play. If the ball is intercepted it can leave the team open to the counter so there is an element of danger in… Read more »

I’ll take the win. But truth be told. Arteta needs to get better at in game management. This is no dig at him. Its just this weakness of his has been very visible in his tenure and Im pretty positive he’ll get better at it as he gains experience. It shouldn’t take Arteta 70+ mins to see that Auba is utterly ineffective when shunted to the RW. Especially when our current system demands the RW to hug the line before cutting in . These are qualities Auba has never really been good at in his whole career. He is a… Read more »

Europe is more about results than performance and as long as Arsenal keep progressing while beating clubs like the Oly, Arteta will continue getting a pass from most on the performance side.
However, if he fails to make the final while falling to a club outside the PL put together at a fraction of Arsenal cost,
the “vampires” will have a field day on here, and Pedro will have to up his excuses game a notch or two.

Champagne Charlie

It’s becoming hard to keep up with the ever changing expectations the naysayers on here have for Arteta. The party line a few weeks ago was ‘it’s a results business’, and the same names are now slating a 0-1 away result in Europe because we didn’t hit peak Barca levels. Unreal, though not at all unsurprising as you could name exactly who was likely to spout such flaccid analysis. That was our first European game under Arteta, that should remind you of the clear and obvious context here……nearly every game provides a “first” situation for Arteta’s managerial applications to address,… Read more »

Great shout Charlie. In two months, we have gone from a team that conceded possession, conceded chances at an alarming rate and conceded goals game after game. In that short space of time, we now look organised without the ball and have tightened up the concessions mentioned above, all with limited opportunity to address personnel changes. But no, let’s ignore that because we aren’t tearing teams a new one. Such short termism and this demand for wanting perfection immediately is quite depressing!

Literally everything in life must be such a disappointment for these people

it’s not rocket science is it, it’s pretty clear the defence has improved .just a quick look at the clean sheets compared to Emery should shut up this stupid talk about is Arteta better than Emery ….just straight up dumb shit , what is a concern is the use of xhaka who is just very very poor and same goes for Guen , hoping he rests Xhaka for Everton and brings in Torriea and Ceballos , push Saka further forward as Arteta said Saka is not a full back which should be pretty clear to most with Kola and Bellarin… Read more »

I think for me personally when Arteta I thought the attack would be the immediate thing to benefit but that hasn’t proved to be the case, not because Arteta is defensive but because we haven’t got the right profiles in midfield and attack. Structurally and systemically we’re very compact which is why we’re not conceding shots on goals like we used to. We broadly have a similar set up to City in that we attack with 5 players as the LB is pushed very high. Where the problem comes in is that we do’t have enough midfielders who can dribble… Read more »

Good result, game was too late for me to work watch

If it was me I’d offer saka a contract at 40k a week but with incentives and options built in that will reward him akin to his output

For example if next season he scores/assists a combined 25 goals he’d automatically get bumped onto 100k. If he repeats the feat another season onto 130k or something

Basically low starting price and very decent incentives to both keep him motivated and stretch him

Gavqatar

Any f*ckwit that cannot see we are moving forward needs to be put down like the stray animal that they are. Wenger led years of decline….since around 2010 since by my reckoning. He was allowed to stay in the Job, far past his sell by date, picking up a couple of FA cups…because in all fairness he wasn’t shit, just past it. Then we get Emery, who was appointed after zero background checks…just because he managed PSG. We get Arteta, at a difficult time, best up and coming coach the world, and we have total amateurs thinking Ancelotti would have… Read more »

Arteta is twice the manager Emery was . He could have got us relegated . The team is immeasurably improved but Xhaka is very poor creatively , slow and conservative.

Pierre and Wasi I agree with a lot of what you have posted. My personal view is that Guendouzi and Willock are no better than bench players and not of sufficient quality to play in starting lineup of key games. Guendouzi in particular runs around the field expending a lot of energy, but I see virtually no end product in what he does and he lacks the stamina to last 90 minutes. Yesterday both players were virtually anonymous in second half of game. Arsenal’s lack of creativity this season is reflected in the performance level of our forwards. That has… Read more »

Yesterday performance was one of the worse I can remember since watching Arsenal. To be honest the team performance look worse after the Dubai holiday. No system or cohesion. To be a midfielder in his playing days, played under AW and understudy to Pep at the moment it seems like we have Sam Allardyce in charge. If the Club don’t invest in better players, fans won’t be turning up to watch what I saw in the last two games. Everyone was going on about style of play at the moment Arsenal don’t have one

@Luisjo for gods sake, look at the bigger picture! Arteta has been dealt a shit hand and is working with it. Lacazette is a big player in the dressing room so Arteta is playing a game! We could win the next game 25 – 0 and same people will still be moaning that the players are shit, manager clueless and Emry should be brought back because we did not win 26 – 0

Luisjo

Gavqatar To be honest Klopp couldn’t get more from these rubbish players I agree, but just because Lacazette is popular that doesn’t mean he has to start. That’s not good management. Be popular after training, you can’t ruin your team selection cos Lacazette tells good jokes. If he’s so popular he can still be that guy, coming on at 70 minutes. Freddie and Emery were not scared to drop Lacazette so don’t give me the popular excuse.

CC, it’ll be interesting for sure. I do feel Inter are the probable favourites but they may choose to prioritize winning Serie A which could work in our favour. Was a surprise to see Ajax lose yesterday but Getafe are doing well in La Liga this season so they may be a bit of an outside bet. Have to disagree, i’m not too keen on Willock. He’s a willing and able runner the but the quality on the ball is lacking imo in terms of passing, link-up, final third play. I don’t see it. Much prefer ESR who’s on loan.

Nelson is coming back from an injury so maybe he’s not ready yet but the squad is big. People are being left out regularly so it seems it’s down to the players to impress Arteta so they can play.

Champagne Charlie

Romford Yea I’d pretty much go along with that, I’ve been saying we’re a good bet for knockout football vs a run of games for a while now. Being better at the back and having Auba, Laca, and Pepe finding some game will always allow for a narrow win or important away goal. Finally we won because of a very long pass from Mustafi to Auba who squared it to Saka ,who put it to Laca to finish with his usual 2 touches.
The point is
What the fuck is the Midfield doing except back-passing
In our obsession of minding a defence that leaks goals we forget to notice the real culprits at the midfield who have no imagination, absolutions no ambition, forcing a lethal strike force right back to pick the ball. So far away , they usually get dispossessed .

There’s no doubt at all we are moving in the right direction. We play with purpose and there is a clear game plan and we are tighter defensively than we have been in years.
I just wonder sometimes at the team selection. However, one way or another it’s grinding out results so how can I argue.
I’m just hoping next season when arteta has more of his own players we see a more consistent first 11 with players playing in their natural positions.

SurferX

Blimey- 1-0 away win in Europe with a dour but ultimately resolute defensive display with us nicking it at the end. Time way back we used to celebrate victories like that. After the meh of the AW Europe years with the muddled mess of Emery- I loved every single minute.

I honestly don’t get what people are complaining about. Most coaches have a reason for selecting an 11 sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Who is the better team at the moment, Arsenal or Wolves? The answer is Wolves, and this tells you nearly everything you need to know about why we are in 10th place and about why we will not be winning the EL or frankly even advancing to the semifinal. Yes, Arteta is making some improvements here or there, but this squad is a million miles from “top four quality”. Also, we’re “a million miles from top 4 quality” yet again in reality that’s translated to the very real 7 points……

Swing and a miss on all counts as per.

I fully agree @bamford10, but if Arteta can raise their value for sale on a write off season for extra funds in the summer then I am all up for playing them. Up their value, sell, and buy the right players at the right price then it is a win. Let’s not dissect the results in the interim and expect miracles from a broken squad. We are starting to get results, it’s a process, and not a quick fix. We are on the verge of something special, and the pessimism won’t help
