A lack of creativity and composure costs Arsenal again

The Arteta revival of Arsenal is proving as spluttery as most expected. The Sheffield United game had positives, but the key thing we’re looking for is a victory and it once again alluded us.

The plan for the moment looks fairly clear. Arteta is trying to make us harder to beat, which in the main, seems to be working. We’re more in control of what’s happening on the pitch, the mistakes have reduced, and it’s in the main, a bit harder to create chances against us.

The main problem is that we aren’t creating enough in the final third to be a problem for most teams. Yesterday our best hope for goals was suspended, so we rolled with Lacazette, Martinelli and Pepe. It’s just not quite there. In the first half, the most interesting of our forward line was Pepe, who seems to be finding more confidence in the way he wants to play, but a lack of end product is still the common takeaway.

Our midfield is where the trouble comes from. There’s only one place a threat is coming from and that’s Mesut Ozil, his passing game was very off yesterday, though he was involved in our goal when he found Laca, who released Saka who found Gabriel for the tap with a deflected cross.

The overall lack of creativity in the side is a worry, not just that, we’re lack dynamism. Because there’s so little power, late runs into the box are a rarity, and if opposition planners know where the creativity is coming from, it makes you easy to play against. Part of the newfound ‘sort of’ solidity comes with a sacrifice in attack. The manager has yet to find the solution, but look, we bitched for 10 years about not having a coach who was interested in defending, now we have one.

I thought Saka showed a lot of promising signs down the left, he and Gabriel are players of the future, they work hard, they have power and pace, but at the moment, as teenagers, they are going to be raw and inconsistent. Arteta was effusive in his praise of the Brazilian after the game.

Absolutely. He’s an 18-year-old kid with all the enthusiasm but as well, he’s so brave to make decisions, to threaten the opponent every time. He’s all the time in the middle of the goal, waiting for an opportunity to come. The fact he hasn’t played 90 minutes for a while – since his injury – but is still in the way he went about every single action is impressive.

The real worry upfront is Alex Lacazette, he really stunk the place out yesterday, he looked slow, out of his depth and a little bit depressed. Not good and not helpful. I wonder if Eddie is going to land game time against Chelsea?

Our defence weren’t punished for their mistakes yesterday. Though in the main we looked solid, it has to be noted that Sheffield United weren’t at their best and we still nearly dropped clangers. I’m thinking about David Luiz not jumping for a corner and letting a man in behind him. I’m also thinking about Bernd Leno flapping at a cross, missing and having to rely on Granit Xhaka to save him on the goal line. I think Arteta made a good point about the general nerves when we’re 1-0 up being a problem he’s struggling to shake at the moment.

Yeah and there’s a history of [nerves in the stadium]. It makes it even more. In the Premier League we are 1-0 up and in the last 10 or 15 minutes you have to be careful, because anything can happen…

… Then when you’re 1-0 up, the last 10 minutes things change. They changed to a back four and they started to commit more bodies forward, and then they’d have six players in front of the ball. It’s more difficult to control when they play long balls or second balls like this. It’s not easy.

You also can’t ignore lady luck, who appears to have looked at Emery’s credit withdrawals last season and deemed us bankrupt. Sheffield United found space at the back post and Fleck hit the ball into the ground and it ended in the top corner, if that was on purpose, I salute you, but it felt like a mistimed shot paid off. The second bit of bad luck was having a ref in charge that always needs a bad decision to feed his ego. Pepe was clattered in the box, it was a clear penalty, but it wasn’t given. When you’re in a rut, these things go against you, and there have certainly been a lot of things go against us of late.

For me, the season was always a write-off. We’re 6 games into a rebirth, and it’ll take time to get the side playing the way the manager wants and the output is going to be inconsistent, but it will click eventually. It’s important to remember the scenario at the moment.

Onwards and upwards, a huge game at Chelsea next where we’ll be hoping to right the wrongs of the last game against them.

See you in the comments x

NFL is too soft now!? Wow. I have not heard that opinion before. If anything its hrder than its ever been even w the new rules. The fitness and size of the current players is not rivaled. I havent been able
To watch for years but im spoiled having grown up in sf in the prime years of montana and young. First game i went to at the stick was when montanas elbow got destroyed by lt amd the giants in that play off game way back when. Between commercials, ugly hits and overall militarization i’m repulsed by it.

when a team has a wretched form as prolonged as ours was stretching back from last leg of previous season to midway through to the current season, it takes a lot of effort and time to get back on track.

That’s not accurate at all (unsurprisingly). We were 8 wins and 2 defeats in our opening 13 games of the season. It was the zero wins in 7 that got Emery the sake. You want to talk about poor form carrying over into the season look no further than your favorite Poch who brought last season into this season and duly got the chop. Top 3 manager though

Pool are going to smash the PL point record.

They probably will break Juventus’ record of 102 points at this rate, can’t really see them dropping points anywhere barring the Etihad at this point.

Scary thing is that you feel there is a lot more to come from their front three, none of who are playing near their best right now.

Liverpool with Henderson, Wijnaldum in their midfield, on paper, looks ordinary, but my goodness Klopp is enjoying his handy work here even more than at Dortmund. We have lots of work to do, starting from ownership. We’ve got one of the worse owners at the moment amongst big clubs.

The Liverpool owners haven’t spent money on the Liverpool. They did sound on the new stand but that’s about it.
They’ve just been run better, using the funds from Suarez and Coutinho to careful rebuild the team.
They are no more present at Anfield than the Kroenkes. It’s just relying on the declining powers of Wenger and incompetent Gazidis for far too long that’s killed us off.

How about that Zlatan effect over at Milan?

Even has Rebic looking like a baller again, I had Theo Hernandez on my summer LB hit-list, guy has such a sweet left peg but that’s where the comparisons with the dreadful Rciardo Rodriguez end thankfully.

Certainly hard to see a team best them over two legs with that inevitable Anfield blitzkrieg.

I’d give teams much more of a chance of beating them in a Final, the Spuds could easily have last year if they had any bottle and Real Madrid did the year before.

For some reason I reckon PSG win it this season though, Juventus and Liverpool the other two serious contenders.

Weagle agree. Through great coaching, man management and putting the guy in the correct tactical frame work, a relegation fodder midfielder can transform into what he’s become

I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries into college football.

    Insane how these guys live.

A D1 college QB is like a king on campus.

    The facilities, stadium, crowds etc.

So different to anything over here.

Good friend of mine watches a lot of NFL and he always says if you came back as anything in the next life you’d want to come back as a star QB at college.

I caught the Ohio vs Clemson game weeks back. That was intense. Fields the Ohio QB was in a Netflix documentary I watched a while ago so it was interesting seeing him play on sch a major stage. He actually replaced, to an extent, Martel who was in a series before him on that show. Now he’s playing for the Gators (gettin’ my American on 😉 )

Henderson too, the same guy that looked nothing more than a water-carrier under Rodgers and Hodgson for England has been transformed since Klopp’s arrival into one of the very best all-round CM in the PL.

It defies belief how a midfield that looks so unspectacular on paper literally dominates any CM that it comes up against. Machine-like.

And they don’t even have a player that looks a dead cert to break 20 PL goals this season, Salah and Mane both have 11 after 22 matches which again is fairly unspectacular.

    Pedro,

Thus idea that Emery prioritised EL over top 4 is completely false and your opinion. We had a hectic run of games and had a spell of injuries and suspensions to contend with which forced Emery’s hand, it’s that simple go and look at it again.

Also the squad was not built for Emery as he was just the head coach and had no control over players. He wanted Nzonzi and got Torreira, he wanted Zaha, Partey and Maguire but got Pepe, Ceballos on loan and an injured Tierney. The squad was built for Raul u der a head coach struct so that any coach can come in and just coach.

As for Arteta he’s clearly come in when squad morale and form was at an all time low. I think we have seen real improvement in our play, especially defence and XG and I think we were extremely unlucky against Chelsea, Palace and Sheffield United, we easily could have won those games.

I still think Emery should have been sacked after the EL final and had Arteta been in place from the start of this season we’d be a lot closer to top 4 than we are now but we need to be honest that just like under Emery, there are players that simply aren’t good enough.

Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi, Sokratis, Kolasinac, AMN, all need replacing.

Upamecano, Aarons and Grealish would be a good start.

    It’s called context.

No excuses for the end of season capitulation tho so he should have been fired, but you could also apportion some blame to the players.

It wasn’t Emery who missed the penalty against Spurs, it was Aubameyang. That would have got us 3rd alone.

A few other spurned chances especially on the last game of the season. That’s not Emery’s fault.

We are at a stage now where:

That any Head Coach or manager that emulates Wengers last season would now be rated as as a genius.

Despite having the freshness and the £250 000 000 spend on assorted players

The unprogressive Arsene Wenger used to give Sheffield United complimentary replays.

Nowadays they take the p**s out of us.

I did feel it was a wrong move bringing Zlatan in but I’ll be damned if it’s keeping everyone at Milan on their toes

  28. bennydevito

I thought we played really well against Sheffield United. A good volley from fleck with a lucky deflection is hardly Arteta’s fault.

A strong top 4 challenge next season is a very reasonable and realistic expectation in my opinion, as long as we ship out some dross and upgrade our central defence and central midfield.

Funny enough I think he’s always been amazing. That year that he and Depay broke out in the Dutch league I kept telling everyone around me he was the better player. The Titans have had a heck of a ride these last few weeks but their journey ends at Arrowhead today I feel. Even though the Chiefs went down by 24 last week they were only beating themselves. Play like they did after that and the Titans won’t be able to stop them. Henry will be a problem for KC though.

I actually think 49ers will blow out the Packers akin to how Atlanta did it a couple of years back.

I do not understand the fixation of bloggers with this Wenger thing. His last 14 seasons were not failures and we were repaying the bank loans. We were also selling players every year. Fyi, the banks wanted him to sign long term deals to remain at the club as a condition for the loans.

Fyi, I am 100% against this as the owners should have helped with the funding. Had they done so, we would not have had to accept the rigid conditions of the bank. And if Wenger was the issue of us not winning anything for 14 years, we COULD have fired him. Look at how Fenway structured the Anfield stadium extension – They did not put their playing side at risk and were not forced to sell their players to pay down debt.

But the Krankies hid behind Wenger for all the years. You could see how quickly Gazidis waved good bye when his shield was gone.

Now that Wenger is gone, it is pointless to blame him. The people who are here now must address our issues.

I am interested in knowing where all our so called money available for transfers has gone. Why are we not supporting Arteta with new buys because let’s be honest this team needs it.

the youngsters look promising but Saka is not a tried and tested PL player. And the rest likewise. If you send them out on loan to the bottom half teams, they would warm the bench at most.

We should stop being deluded in thinking that everything will turn out OK as before. this club is on a downward trajectory and a lot of it is due to the Krankies.

We have lost out on CL money for a few years now – they should at least have provided funds for the transition. It’s not as if the club are not repaying them with better capital gains.

On balance, it is clear that AFC is too big a club for them.

One thing is sure. As long as there are foolish fans around, the Krankies can rest safely knowing that their capital is appreciating or at least their cash flows are OK. They are not too ambitious.

Its debatable. Personally, I share your view and do not agree with that approach but I understand the logic of what they were trying to do.

What is the route for a promising youngster? Play a few seasons in a lesser team and hope to be noticed.

    1. We gave them a chance.
    2. To avoid them signing for another team, we inflated the wages so the team balance was not upset.

This is how we ended up with a lot of dross too. But in their specific situation, their policy worked as they had to target top 4 and CL money.

The issue remains the owners, the fact that we built a stadium with money from the fans (no other way to put it) and allowed Wenger total control since Dein left.

Our issues can only be sorted in the near term if the owners change policy and start funding the transfer side of things.

we are playing well structured football since Arteta came on, but we really lack fluidity and movement, we didn’t seem we can score more than one goal during the six matches since he came, we need to go for it, we really need points in the next league games, if we fuck it, we could be fighting for our lives not to get relegated. What a poor season its been.

I could have easily been sarcastic with regards to Xhaka. Likely infact. I still maintain though 2015 had Wenger signed Lacazette instead of no outfield players we would have won the league. Wenger dithered though and we got him two seasons later and he’s been hit and miss ever since.

I always thought there was a top player in Oxlade-C but I am not convinced he would have improved much at Arsenal. I think he said he needed a new challenge and wanted the move anyway.

He has shown more glimpses of his talent at Liverpool but still is yet to achieve the true consistency he is capable of, although he has suffered with injury as he did with us.

I think at the time there were slightly more pros than cons to taking the £40 million for him.

I dont disagree about the valuation stuff, utterly unsurprising that folk would claim our players are worth 10 quid. We rejected 20 mil for Nelson in the summer apparently, but you hear about us needing to sell Chambers for 5 mil.

That said Ox never delivered for us, and 40 mil was enough to comfortably replace his talent at the club. I’ve no issue with that sale at all, same as I wouldn’t be opposed to selling anyone if the money was good. We get too attached to players here sometimes imo.

Chelsea are really something. Resigning Luiz and loaning out Cuadrado for 3 years (4 total) after paying 24 million for him. Also I think we might of ending up with the better defensive signing this summer. Luiz to Chelsea, Bailly to United, Stones to CIty and Mustafi to us. Long term wise Stones or Bailly may shade it but imo we got the better signing

  80. Chris

Would it be fair to say Oxlade-C best game was against Milan when he played through the middle? Also had a stormer against Bayern away I think.

He had (and still does) ingredients to be a monster of a centre midfielder who drives the play forward powerfully. Great shot from range also.

It’s a shame it never truly worked out at Arsenal.

  81. Pierre

“we are playing well structured football since Arteta came on, but we really lack fluidity and movement, we didn’t seem we can score more than one goal during the six matches since he came, we need to go for it, we really need points in the next”

We are lacking fluidity and movement but Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Addressing the weaknesses is what we needed to do and Arteta is doing that whilst trying to win football matches.

2 deflected goals conceded in the last 4 games is confirmation that we are more compact defensively.

Arteta is doing what needs to be done at this present time , of course it would have been nice to win the last 2 games and with a little bit of luck we could have achieved victories.

There has been criticism of the substitution of Nketiah on for Lacazette.

What I will say is , although Lacazette had a effective game , when Nketiah came on the game opened up and our forward play for that short period before they scored was open and expansive and ……different, dare I say ” fluidity and movement “.

Nketiah found himself in very good positions 3 or 4 times but unfortunately was rushed and lacked composure with his final ball, which I suppose is natural as he was looking to impress.

I thought our game management was very good in the 2nd half and we looked in control , however sometimes luck, ref decisions, or poor defending happens and a team can be punished….look at Chelsea v Newcastle, one lapse of concentration after dominating the game and they were punished.

I feel a slight pity for the “fans ” who haven’t the understanding of the game to realise the progress ( albeit slow) we are making.

Arteta is going about the job exactly the right way .
Results are not everything at the moment, Emery started with a 22 game unbeaten run but because the underlying problems were never addressed ,it was a false dawn.

Ox didn’t do enough while here for me, flattered to deceive despite having raw ingredients. He’s looked much better ta Liverpool so its fair to argue he could’ve delivered for us in the end, I just think we should be more ruthless with when that productivity is reached. He came in at 18 and left at 24 I think, with what on his CV here? Not a lot. Loads of factors for sure, but that money a few years back was comically high for what he’d done. Very fair to suggest we’ve not done well with the money.

Also re Marko: He’s off scrolling for a rebuttal to that burner you landed lol but we all say daft stuff when drunk on new players/managers etc. You’d think he’d own it a bit more though and not be so painfully hard for the new and shiny EVERY time.

  87. Pierre

Ox is and has always been a quality player. It is a pity that he is injury prone.

It will be a surprise if he gets through this season without an injury

Wenger should have used him in the central midfield role …big mistake.

  88. Nelson

Some of our players can checked out momentary during the game. Against Crystal Palace, Xhaka was day dreaming, allowing Jordan Ayew free to score the tying goal. Against Sheffield, a lot of fans were carried away by those flashy tricks from Pepe. But he was the one who didn’t come to defend, allowing the tying goal to be scored. I don’t know how Arteta can get all the players to focus for the full 90 minutes.

  89. Un na naai

With all the football he’s missed too he may go on a bit longer into his thirties

Let’s see but that’s my call

Like how you own the Lichtsteiner Antonio Valencia or any of the multitude of stupid stuff you say. I don’t know what Don thinks he nailed me for it looks like I was foolishly happy for signings and a statement of intent the following summer after Wenger signed up zero outfield players and just 10 million on a keeper. In hindsight Mustafi, Stones and really Luiz for the money it took to RESIGN him were all poor signings.

But anyway years of failure in the transfer market for Arsene that summer he spent 90 odd million on Xhaka, Mustafi and Perez probably got a lot of people foolishly optimistic. Alot from August 31st though nothing from the summer where we were being linked with Kante and ended up with Granit

  91. Upstate Gooner

Ox was, is, and always will be an injury prone bum. Yes, Bum. Capable of an occasionally good game but overall painfully average. When we sold him for $35mil I thought it was a mistake. He’s benefiting from the system, is all. Just like Coutinho was, and many others right now under Klopp. He’s played what, 10 games for them in 2 years? Yeah, I’d say we got the better end of the deal.

We can get 3 points at Chelski next game. Both teams are severely flawed so it could go either way. I’d start Ceballos next game, Ozil is producing next to nothing and he’s a passenger at the moment,we need something else.

Ox could have, and should have been an Arsenal legend.

As a 19 year old kid, you could tell he had huge potential. Pace, power, strength, passing ability, can score a goal outside the box, and more than capable of dictating the play in the middle of the park.

Unfortunately, and this could be due to his build, injuries have and look like stopping his progress.

What makes me laugh is that OX was brought for the same price as Walcott was. Both were very unlucky with injuries. Walcott played for us for 12 years scoring over 100 goals, Ox couldn’t even manage more than 6 goals in a season. Yet Theo got all the critics.

Forgetting the name but it follows a few guys who played in college and continue to try and make nfl/arena squads? One of the kids goes over to germany… was fascinating. NCAA is literally a plantation. Absolutely sickening.
The reason i think college football is the closest you get to british football is colleges are not always in big cities, you usually need a significant metropolitan area for all the big sports teams, so you have alumni plus the people who live in mid sized cities following these kids who arent yet celebs or making a big paycheck and they live and die for them. I think we finally have the right manager and we’re all positive, but results do not just depend on Arteta, the recruitment over the next 2 or 3 windows needs to be right.

I trust Edu, Josh and Raul. In the summer, in my opinion Saliba, Tierney, Martinelli, Pepe and Luiz (due to recent form), look to have all been good acquisitions. All were planned signings and we generally got good deals for them all.

If we come out of this window with no signings, then I genuinely believe no one that could improve the squad was available. Good times ahead I reckon.

  114. Gonsterous

I don’t understand why arteta is not using the squad. Does he think he can go the whole remainder of the season with the same front 4?
He needs to rotate and keep his players fresh and hungry. If you give a dog too much food, he’s not going to fight for his bone. Similarly, if players are just getting into the team without merit then they will.continue to perform badly.
He tracked back on his players will play on merit comment real quick.
Thankfully we have auba out for a couple of games so he can come back fresh and hungrier. If it was up to arteta, he would be playing 90min in all the games.
