Mesut Ozil charm offensive

by & filed under News Review.

Arteta blazing over…

The Mikel Arteta fan club just keeps on growing, the latest fan to voice his bold opinions on the manager isssssssss… Mesut Ozil. The German, who metaphorically garroted Unai Emery with his IDGAF performances, had many nice things to say about his new boss.

“Fighting and having possession, being in control of the game, having the ball all the time.

“These are the things that he is working on with us and you can see it — everyone is smiling, laughing, enjoying their time — it has made us successful.

“It is basically getting us back to the old Arsenal virtues,”

“I think he is the right man at this club.”

“He can show us everything he has learnt in his long career. He knows exactly what we need.

“He knows what to say to us, how to give us a positive attitude and how to make us successful.

“I can see he is really hungry but at the same time he is also very down to earth.”

Some papers are saying this is a dig at Unai Emery, I didn’t really see it that way, more an honest reflection of what he’s enjoying with Arteta.

Some will guffaw at the temerity of these comments and I can definitely see why there would be outrage. Mesut mailed it in big-time under Unai, but ultimately, we’ve all had a job at TGI Fridays, being bossed around by some tosser that insists you’re an idiot because of your handling of the balloon animals, getting booed by some big shot from Grays because you sneezed on his steak. Fuck TGI Fridays and anyone that goes there for a birthday and pretends they don’t want the song.

‘You know why you’re here Darren, stand on the fucking chair, let me tie these balloons on your arms, and feign embarrassment as I sing a hateful song at you’

Anyway, point being… no one liked working for Emery. No one made it out the other side a better player. If those battered players have changed their attitude now, who cares, we are a fan base led by god, and god says he who casts the first stone usually gets a stadium ban. So don’t do that, but do forgive. Think of Mesut as a puppy that’s been left in a bin bag by the side of the river, Arteta has found him, the fans will give him 3 weeks to recover, if it doesn’t work out, dad will take him to the vet (Washington DC) and that’ll be that.

Arsenal are being linked to a whole host of players I’m pretty sure we’re not going to bring to the club.

We are short a center-back, John Stones has been linked on loan, but I can’t see it. I think he has an outrageous amount of talent that we could tap, but I’d be surprised to see Pep farm out players to Mikel so soon. I’d also be worried Stones would bring some of that horrible form over to us. Only thing working in our favour is that City might want to shop window him, and the player would die for some game time with the Euros coming this summer.

Bruno Guimaraes, one of 600 Bruno’s being linked to the Premier League, is also picking up a lot of Arsenal attention. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder is valued at £22m, he smells like an Edu sort of player (Drenched in Le Labo), and I’d basically be game for anyone that can run fast, tackle, and occasionally bite a rival.

Not quite sure about the video, doesn’t look very polished and lacks speed if these videos are anything to go by… 6 minutes of scouting though, so will happily be told otherwise.

… I do worry about the rumours, I’m not sure we’re rolling in cash, so any move would have to be funded by bringing more money forward from the summer, or maybe via a player sale (make it MUSTAFI PLEASE).

Short one today, pretty devastated that people said the new volume on the podcast was still too low. Back to sound engineering school for me.

See you in the comments!

City are short at the back so I doubt they’d sanction a loan for Stones unless they have a transfer for another CB lined up. I’d be for it though with an option to buy. It’s not like he’s any worse than Luiz or Sokratis.

Stones and Lemar on loan would be a very decent winter transfer window for us.

  2. Romford Pele

If we really want Guimares but don’t want to part with funds this window, could we not do a loan with obligation to buy in the summer? That way Athletico know what’s coming in.

  3. Wasi

    RP
Loan with obligation suits us and not the selling club who have the player tied down till 2023.
Will need a lot of convincing and under the table cash maybe to get such a deal done if we dont have prior relations with the club .

  4. Romford Pele

Wasi – it’s a fair point but he’s gonna leave regardless. We’re just delaying the payment by six months. Plus you’d hope with the influence of Edu and Kia Joorabchin at the club, these are the sort of things we can do now. Might be wishful thinking.

I like Bruno’s profile. 6ft, athletic, can play as a B2B or DM, looks to be able to pass well too. Wouldn’t be my first choice but definitely on the shortlist.

  5. DigitalBob

Romford – I think he looks decent but reminds me a bit of Granit just slightly more agile. Seems like one that would need quite a bit of time to adapt to the league and his role within the team rather than slot in and solve the CM issue fairly quickly.

Soumare or Zakaria would be higher up on the shortlist for sure.

  6. Romford Pele

Digital – you think so? Stylistically he looks very different to Xhaka imo. More of an all action midfielder. Industrious and quick across the ground too. What I like about South American midfielders as well is that they run their lungs out. He looks more in the Torreira mould to me. Just bigger and more adventurous in his passing,

Soumare is still the dream for me though because of his all encompassing attributes. Not as keen on Zakaria. Good physically but his distribution isn’t.

  7. Sid

Bruno guimares is xhakalson mak 2.
Zakaria is better, faster and stronger
Sangare has fast and stronger than zakaria
Soumare most technical of the list, fast, not as strong as Sangare, not as defensive too.

    Im telling you for free!

  8. DigitalBob

Romford – Just from the video Pedro’s posted, I get a sense of that. Its like he’s what we kind of hope Granit should/would be which isn’t exactly a bad thing but not sure if that’s the CM we need next to LT.

Soumare with LT would be a thing of beauty for sure. I’m very worried United manage to get both Soumare and Bruno Fernandes as that would solve a lot of issues for them.

  9. HighburyLegend

lol the facial expression of Ozil when Emery is trying to give him his vampire bite on the photo, just priceless.

This Arsenal team has goals in them with or without Aubamayang.

Lacazette just needs to chill out in front of goal , Martinelli has shown he has an eye for a goal , Pepe has goals in him , plus Saka, Nketiah and Willock have all shown that they can score goals at every level they have played at.
Ozil , who has a better goals per game ratio than Ramsey , will also chip in as well as the centre backs from set pieces..
Our delivery from corners is very good, hence our record of scoring the most goals from corners this season.

Will be interesting to see who comes in for Aubamayang this weekend, Saka is more natural on the left though Martinelli is more of a goal threat .

Pepe is sometimes sleeping on the right when we are attacking on the left …The goal he scored against United was a prime example of how he should arrive in the box unmarked .
However , on many occasions he is nowhere to be seen as the ball is played into the box.

  11. Un na naai

    Pierre

    Is this true?!
Can you send a link to verify this? Astounding if true that nobody has twigged this

I still think the stat that amazes me the most is that ozil created an average of 100 premier league chances per season until emery took over. Had wenger provided a goal scorer sooner a much larger portion of those would be assists.

Arsenal have called a press conference for today at 2.30pm which is unusual. Press conferences for Saturday games are normally on Thursday. Anyone reckon there’s anything to it? Wonder what it could be for.

    No names mentioned…..

Leicester have sold a player for big money each season since they won the prem

    Kante 30 mil
    Drinkwater 35 mil (😂)
    Mahrez 65 mil
    Slabhead 80 mil
    Maddison tbd

Our interest is pure click bait, because we aren’t entertaining a 75+ mil transfer from them. Absolutely no chance of us doing an IOU backhand super loan with Leicester that Lille went for.

Better players for less money than Maddison, I’ve never been impressed with him to that degree.

  18. Un na naai

    Pierre

    Blimey!!

Not a great return from Rambo when you consider he scored 20 odd goals in one aberration of a season.

Remove that and it’s pretty dour. I mean the man wouldn’t stop goal hanging for the following four years so for such a small goal return.

Put that in your pipe Paulinho. How’s you like them apples??

  19. Un na naai

Ah fuck that can’t be true Charlie
No way are we in for James Maddison at £90m?!

    Charlie

I prefer Grealish and Foden but he’s a very good player. Score goals. Makes goals. Is a big big reason for Leicester and vardy’s success this year.

I wouldn’t say no to that

  21. Marc

Strange we’re holding a press conference today – my guess is they’ve moved the pre match conference from tomorrow for what ever reason.

I said months ago we wouldn’t have much if any money to spend in Jan unless we sold players – why people keep linking / referring to bullshit click bait is beyond me.

None of it is happening – the only likely signing is a CB on loan and no it won’t be fucking John Stones.

  22. Pierre

“Strange we’re holding a press conference today – my guess is they’ve moved the pre match conference from tomorrow for what ever reason.”

A lot of thought must have went into that “guess”.

  23. Champagne charlie

    Un

You a big fan of Maddison beyond the fact he was squirted out on the isles?

I’ve not watched him loads but he comes across as a passer that prefers the game in front of him. He gets goals and creates without question, but can’t say that he’d bring a whole lot outside that which we don’t already have. Broken record at this point but Grealish is a much better fit for us imo, can receive tight and turn, drift through lines, and wears aged 7 shinnies so instantly becomes better, also has a set price as per a clause.

Maddison is a United purchase all over, good player, massive fee.

  24. Marc

    Un

Ramsey was a decent player but he’s one of those who gets remembered for being better than he was as he had a habit of scoring in high profile matches.

If you didn’t know the name would you sign a player with his goal scoring record and who will miss at least a third of every season every year through injury on £400k per week?

  25. Champagne charlie

Lol fucking Foden ain’t happening, he’s superb and tied to City. Arteta might be well thought of there but they’re not mental.

It’s super Jack II all day long for me

  26. Marc

    Pierre

Well as others seem to think we’re about to announce the 2nd coming or we’ve established alien contact or that we’re about to sign a £90 million player I thought a little realism might be a good idea.

  27. Freddie Ljungberg

Apparently only “tampon twirlers” wants us to sign players and improve more than painting Xhakas zimmer frame red and hope it makes him keep up with the able bodied players. Smh.

  28. Un na naai

    Cc

Yeah prefer grealish. Better running with the ball for sure but I would still be delighted if we hooked Maddison. Arteta is a man who knows what he wants, especially in a position he played for 15 years at the top.
If he really does want Maddison then it’s with good reason. Maybe he wants his ball carriers to come from deeper or wide?
    He will know

    ARTETA SAYS NO!!!

  30. HighburyLegend

There’s no need to panic about that press conference guys…

It’s just to confirm Xhaka and Ozil’s new contracts.

  31. Champagne Charlie

    Un
Yea I don’t disagree, would be curious to see what setup Arteta fancies after some squad building to his taste. You’re spot on in that he maybe sees his wider guys as the ones to provide that penetration with the central bunch as ones to flourish ball at feet and pitch in front of them.

    Freddie
Aww mild mannered intellectual you are and all. Keep up the text and twirl you fanny

    Charlie
Yeah exactly and if that’s what he wants then Madison is a perfect fit. He pops up with long shots too, something we are lacking at the moment.

Maybe he wants him dropping deeper popping the ball on wide, then on his toes to arrive late on the edge

  33. Freddie Ljungberg

If we overpay by 50m for another attacking player on Artetas say so he needs his head checked.
Unless we’re spending 300m in the summer, in that case go ahead.

    Thankfully it’s just paper talk.

  34. Champagne Charlie

    Un

Quite possibly, but we’d need someone the opposite flank to Pepe to provide that same kind of penetration which would likely see Laca/Auba sold.

I’m excited to see what we get up to and how much backing Arteta gets this summer, I’ve no doubts at all that he’s got his own ideas of transfers so will be curious to witness if the braintrust take a more supportive role because of that? Idk. Will former/current City targets get exposed to our benefit? Imagine so.

  35. kristoman

    FL
dont you know we already have a top 4 squad? What we need now is arteta signings plus top 4 squad to make us title challengers in the summer.

  36. HighburyLegend

Kane could miss the Euros, according to Maureen…

But I suspect him to dramatise the situation a bit, in the good old Maureen’s style.

  37. Pierre

“We will be title contender next season once we improve the top 4 quality team in the summer”

Yes, it’s good to have a manager who we can trust isn’t it.
The previous 18 months has been a nightmare hasn’t it, but now we can look forward to watching out team look defensively sound , a midfield that is disciplined and an attack that in time will rid themselves of Emery’s influence and become a dynamic force again.

  38. Champagne Charlie

    Freddie

Yet in you come swinging for me, where’s my mentioning of you? Go look for it and report back in an hour. Pathetic to claim any of that as cause for firing in with a semi, you’ve skin like tissue paper obviously.

“Apparently only “tampon twirlers” wants us to sign players and improve more than painting Xhakas zimmer frame red and hope it makes him keep up with the able bodied players. Smh.”

Firing in with a semi was it? I only called you a cunt after you started with your usual condescending bullshit sugar tits, talk about thin skin.

  40. kristoman

    Pierre
how long will it takes get rid of this emery influence? Maureen and the tot are playing his style already and carlo at everton are already responding to its tune now, so why ours taking a half season to see shift in mentality?

  41. Nelson

The TW is half over. I guess we’ll be hearing Raul today, repeating his usual stance that the January TW is not a good time to sign players.

  42. Champagne Charlie

    Freddie

Does it seem like I’m having a wobble here? If so you’re struggling more than usual to grasp the basics. I’ve been chatting football with Un, you’re bent out of shape over it.

You don’t need an invite to comment at all, but you’ll be called out for what you preach about others and how you yourself act when it’s precisely what you disparage.

  43. kristoman

And please dont come with excuse it takes longer because of the destruction of the players confidence by emery. Because Totteham and everton had it worse than us. Totteham was very very low in confidence and in everton case it was completly shattered

  44. HighburyLegend

@kristoman : sorry, I stupidly thought there was some England National team fans on Le Grove, what a dumbass I am…

  45. Romford Pele

Loads of Brazilian reporters now running with these Guimares links. One especially who was the first to report our interest in Martinelli. Let’s see if this has legs.

  46. Pierre

Before the game on Saturday I made this point. “Arsenal will win the game comfortably if we don’t make simple errors like giving away silly free kicks”

So what did we do , we gave away 22 free kicks with probably a large percentage in the 2nd half
Every time you give a free kick away against a team like palace it puts pressure on the defence as they look to hit the penalty box plus it breaks up the play which is a negative for our style of football.

Arteta mentioned this and our poor game management after the game , he is right though I believe he should have emphasised BEFORE the game the importance of not diving into tackles and giving the opposition the chance to fall over.

It should have been drilled into the players , STAY ON YOUR FEET….

    A lesson learnt hopefully.

  47. Champagne Charlie

    Romford

Let’s hope he has legs, more legs than Pedro’s clip suggests. Do love a Brazilian CM, have to be honest.

Gilberto, Edu, Denilson for 8 games 😍 haha

  48. kristoman

    cc
you did exactly same thing to me a while back when i brought up the idea that arteta should be burning bridges with the top4 quality squad we apparently have

  49. Pierre

    Kristoman
“? Maureen and the tot are playing his style already and carlo at everton are already responding to its tune now, so why ours taking a half season to see shift in mentality?*

Jose and ancellotti have had a similar impact as Arteta , a few decent results and a few hiccups.

Arteta has had 5 games not “half a season ” so let’s hope our football continues in an upward trajectory .

  50. Pedro

Kristoman, I know you are desperate to put Arteta under pressure here, but I think you might want to pump the brakes on your direction when you draw parallels between Arsenal are Spurs being in the same predicament.

Spurs made the CL final last year. That means they have a Champions League final squad of players to work with. Mourinho did not have a harder job than Arteta.

‘Jose has Spurs playing his way’, shite defence, losing big games 2 points ahead of Arsenal in our worst season for 38 years.

I don’t even want to start on your squad building vision of burning bridges, I couldn’t think of anything more idiotic for a manager with limited budget to do midway through a season.

  51. Lego Hair

    Pierre

Agree with the amount of free kicks we conceded, you cant do that when this is the bread and butter for teams like Palace.

Arteta you’d like to think recognised this bu the mentioned wanting the team to press like crazy and win the ball back asap.

Think we need to be cleverer when we do press like crazy and not so close to our own 18.

  52. kristoman

Common on now pedro we do have a top 4 squad dont we? All we needed was a sauce manager to whip them into shape, that was the mantra here. What of everton? What boosted their mentality and confidence so fast that the’ve only lost one since the manager two months ago.?

  53. Nelson

Is there any rules on doping in football? I don’t mean that a healthy player uses substance to improve his performance. I am aware that some substance can speed up the recovery after an injury to the muscle. I can’t believe that FA will spend time checking on those injured players.

  54. Champagne Charlie

    Romford

Wonder if it will be a case of Arsenal offering up more money as long as Atletico Paranaense agree to wait until the summer to receive the money? Means they end up with £10 Million more but they have to wait a little longer…while holding onto the player obviously.

  57. kristoman

    On the contrary pedro
arteta is not the problem. The problem is you and your lots claiming we have top4 squad that emery destroyed arsenal.
look emery was a failure no doubt. But for arteta to even smell top 4, half of this squad must be culled and replace. Am saying the coach can only do so much when you have the most unbalance squad in history

  58. kristoman

They lost to the two best in league away from and one is a fa cup. FYI they were not all youth team like one we lost to

  59. Romford Pele

CC, surprised you haven’t seen, quite a few rumours.

CA, not sure buddy. Appears that he has a pretty cheap release clause. Rumours are saying we’ve tracked him for a couple years. Cagigao who scouted cesc, Vela etc and then Martinelli is also apparently behind this. Sounds like the sort of deal we should be doing. Plus these South Americans have that right level of intensity and hunger we need. Plus i’ve always liked Brazilians in our team!

Of course this could all be a ploy to get Benfica to close the deal as they’ve been negotiating for a while. people often link players to Arsenal even though there’s sometimes no interest on our part. In this scenario though, i think there is.

  60. Words on a Blog

Inter offering Spurs £7.5m for Eriksen.

Last summer, Spurs were talking about (rather optimistically) £70m for Eriksen.

Depreciation in the last year of a player’s contract is a bummer!

  61. Pierre

Kristoman , looks like a Liverpool team made up of reserves and youth players , I’m sure you will agree .

And we drew with Liverpool with a team that had a lower average age than them .

Could well be a negotiation trick on their part.

I like a little outside the box scouting. Worked with Martinelli and South America is an under tapped resource for us.

I agree with you on their tenacity and work rate, he reminds me a bit of Rodri from the clips. He seems bigger on the pitch that his profile suggests, doesn’t look as if he’s fast but always seem to close space well, accelerate quickly and keep up with the play. Nice distribution and exudes power in possession.

Interesting one. All for it. Even if it doesn’t work out, kind of moves I like to see.

  66. Un na naai

    Charlie

Yeah. Time will tell. I’m eager to see what he does too. He strikes me as extremely thorough so he will know exactly what he wants and who to get it from.
Let’s see. If he wants Maddison and really has asked the club to pull out the stop for him then he will have him earmarked for an essential role in his vision and that can’t be a bad thing.

Unless he does and emery and tanks as soon as he embeds his ideas in fully.
    Which he won’t.

  67. Romford Pele

Ca, agreed. He doesn’t look big but all sites saying he’s 6ft so seems to have presence. As you say, South America is a bit of an untapped resource. So much talent there and you can still get value for money whereas in Europe you do feel as if you’re overpaying slightly.

There’s that RB Yan Couto we’ve been linked with as well so hopefully Cagigao and Edu are using their contacts to our benefit. From the scouting reports he seems to be able to play as a CM but DM too. So can play with and without Torreira. That sort of versatility is needed, in addition to his natural aggression and tenacity.

  68. Champagne Charlie

    Un

Arteta comes across as someone with a genuine vision, so with that there’s a degree of ‘let’s see then’ about it because you can appreciate he’s building something.

I never got that impression under Emery once, and it certainly wasn’t clear under Wenger for the longest time. Now I look at a window the way id previously hoped, in that it’s an opportunity to sculpt the side to a certain shape.

  69. Romford Pele

    Haha Marko.

Luiz is represented by Kia Joorabchin who is also Edu’s agent. You know sometimes getting these South Americans require a few shady dealings.

I like what Cagigao is doing though.

Wenger became an opportunist in the market rather than a man with a plan but it’s actually quite remarkable really that even in his latter years, as an opportunist he was able to get these spare parts playing such synchronised football. Not all the time but a lot more than we have since

Emery just didn’t seem to know what he wanted. Reflective of his adapt to your opponents philosophy really. We were what he thought we needed to be each week to thwart the sheff United’s and Norwich’s fearsome attacking players

  71. Romford Pele

Pedro, unsure. You’d like to think because of Edu we might focus on that market a bit more now. But he’s been linked with Benfica for a while so this could be a ploy to get them to speed up the deal. Also linked with Chelsea and BVB.

  72. Receding Hairline

Still reading about the 18 months of sheer horror on here

Yet the fact we finished a point off top four (in the horror months) is used as a benchmark for what the squad is capable of (in my view it should be used as a sample of their limitations, playing all season to achieve a target and messing up against Palace and Brighton at home is a clear example of the mentality of these players)

We celebrated a loss and win against United and Chelsea at home yet we easily beat both teams keeping clean sheets in the horror months.

I don’t expect any major moves this window so i will wait for our first back to back victories in the league, we have not managed that in quite sometime.

  73. Marko

Only Arsenal fans would try to find something wrong with links to a player linked with Dortmund, Chelsea and Benfica and who Atletico Madrid had a first option to buy and would likely be there if it wasn’t for them wanting a striker this month. Meanwhile at Arsenal that same player doesn’t look polished enough for us. Forget him hey let’s have another debate on Xhaka and Özil turning the corner under Arteta. Sounds good

  74. Champagne Charlie

    Receding

Predictably you stroll in to challenge any talk of the last 18 months being shite. Nvm the collapse to miss out on top 4, the EL final embarrassment, then the worst start to a league in near 40 years that landed him the sack.

We went unbeaten for 23 games 🤡 woooo

  75. Champagne Charlie

    Un

That was precisely the energy we gave off, one of a side that cared only for the opposition and how we needed to change to fit them. Which explains why we could up the game and at the same time look about even with Brighton.

Further fuels the thought that the very elite are so because they’ve a vision themselves that’s bigger than who is coming to town etc. Duly remember that being mocked at every turn on here. A vision being nothing but fluff aged remarkably well lol

  76. Receding Hairline

“Nvm the collapse to miss out on top 4, the EL final embarrassment, then the worst start to a league in near 40 years that landed him the sack.”

Yea all this took place in 18 months

8 months at best (with season breaks between) , counting isn’t your strong suit.

No one mentioned the unbeaten run between

We won 21 league games last season, joint third best in the league…THE HORROR

We got to a European cup final………Quick get those players therapy

We beat Spurs, United and Chelsea at Home, drew lIverpool, we had our best standing in the top six H2H for a while ….Where is the therapist for FFS!!

    Go take several seats oga

The fact the man messed up the ending of the season and the start of this one does not erase some of the good work he did here, try as you do to paint that picture, you are the shameless dude who uses him finishing a point off fourth as proof of squad quality, the end of season collapse is on him but getting there is on the players…sound fair argument that.

  77. Batistuta

Past 18 months weren’t the best neither were they as horrible as it’s been painted on here sometimes.. Just wasn’t the right fit for club and manager, best to leave that as it is.

  78. Champagne Charlie

January 2020 and Receding is still going to bat for his hero, you love to see it.

He was brilliant, just a minor hiccup did him. Got it mate, back in that padded room.

  79. Pedro

Bati, worst start in 38 years, fans not attending, captain telling the fans to get fucked, players downing tools, bottom half of the table for chunks… think it really was that bad.

  80. Receding Hairline

” he was sacked because the last 18 months were objectively bad.”

No it wasn’t. His job was get the team into the UCL, and he gave it a very good go hence why he wss backed over the summer.

“Bati, worst start in 38 years, fans not attending, captain telling the fans to get fucked, players downing tools, bottom half of the table for chunks…”

Cherry picking all the wrong things that happened in the past 18 months, how nice

  81. Receding Hairline

“January 2020 and Receding is still going to bat for his hero, you love to see it.”

No one is going to bat for anyone

You are the shameless man that always pops up with one point off fourth as proof of squad quality and how good the players were while piling the late season collapse and cup final defeat on the manager. Good players, Bad Emery.

That has been your MO since and it needs to stop

  82. Batistuta

Good points about better results vs the top6…

Got to a European final, first in a while by the way

    Some good performances too

Not all doom and gloom, just didn’t work out in the end which was for the most part his fault.

  83. Cesc Appeal

    RP

    Exactly.

Get smart. Have a recruitment process others are envious of.

We’ve got the connection with Edu and the DOF who can get complicated deals done and has the agent contacts.

Have to wait and see how it plays out.

  84. Batistuta

    Pedro

All of those were this season i believe, the end to last season was also quite unfortunate for the most part, probably was to the time to shift him on but the club didn’t… A bit unfair to lump all of that bad times this season with the good work he did do when he first got here

  85. Champagne Charlie

    Receding

I point to us getting 70 points as clear argument against the claims we have a hopeless squad. That’s top 4 numbers, 71.3 point average for 4th place over the last decade. Kills the claims stone dead.

What you’re arguing is the blame game, and sorry to piss on your cornflakes but the manager ALWAYS gets the responsibility when his team doesn’t win a game in 6 against inferior (as the league suggests) opponents.

Pick apart off players all you like, and plenty of shit performers were on show, but the whole thing is at the managers door to…….manage. He had a horrible end of season, then an entire summer plus recruitment to put his 12 months experience into improvement.

What he delivered? Worst start for 38 years. So take the seat you’re offering me, you’ve nothing to stand on here at all other than trying to preserve your broken heart and bruised pride after dancing merrily between the pillars of the paella palace.

  86. Receding Hairline

“Say what you will, the last 18 months was the worst football I have ever seen as an Arsenal fan.”

Yea the storming win from behind against Spurs at home
The dismantling of united and Chelsea both 2-0 at home (this is from posters celebrating a defeat to Chelsea a few weeks ago because they saw some neat passing)
The spirited performance against Liverpool at the Emirates
Brushing aside Napoli and Valencia in Europe
Fans singing we have our Arsenal back away to Fulham while we dismantled them 1-5
    etc

Did this all also happen in the past 18 months Jim?

This 18 months nonsense is getting annoying

  87. Leedsgunner

Eddie Nketiah to Bristol City is probably is good for him but a real missed opportunity for the club to get ahead of the game and sign Jack Grealish.

Perhaps we are awaiting Aston Villa to go down before we approach but in my opinion, this is a mistake. There is enough interest in him so that even if Villa the competition will keep Grealish’s value very high.

We should have offered Nketiah on loan until the end of the season in exchange for a first refusal on their player.

Grealish, if acquired, would fit our system like a glove.

“What he delivered? Worst start for 38 years. So take the seat you’re offering me,”

I still suggest you take that seat and make it a stool

Wait till someone else achieves better with same squad before piping up. A draw against Bournemouth and Palace was celebrated on here like we were breaking new grounds as a team.

I remember Graham arguing that Freddie has already proven he is a better coach etc , we all know how that ended.

Arteta has started well but still quite some way to go for some of the nonsense you come out with here

  91. Marko

To be fair he’s not really defending Emery that seems like a really basic and juvenile response to someone saying something that you don’t agree with. He does bring up a point though with regards to a certain individual who maintains how awful the past 18 months were but who also points to missing out on top 4 barely within those 18 months as an indicator of the quality of the squad. Which is it. Anyway as Bati said move on guy was here 18 months his lasting impression on the club is little if anything.

    Squad quality obvs
We achieved top 5 despite emery. Not because of him
Our 22 game run was still the dying kicks of wengaball
Take our wins v Fulham and Leicester. Did we play that sort of football past November?
    No.
    Why?
Emery pushed his version of football forward and the team just never recovered

Either way we are better where we are now
He was sacked because he was shit. Or too shit for arsenal
The fans wanted him gone, so did the players and the dicks in suits had no choice but to rectify their awful mistake

    Good riddance
He was a selfish, egotistical man.

  96. Words on a Blog

By now I’m pretty bored by the squad poverty versus head coach quality debate.
At this point, it should be clear that :

    1) performances and results sharply deteriorated this season under Emery despite an upgrade to the squad. Emery lost the players, and when you lose the players, it really doesn’t matter how good or bad your tactics are, or how reactive or proactive your philosophy is; Emery started strongly, because his approach was so refreshingly unlike Wenger, but unlike early and mid-era Mourinho, he either wasn’t tactically astute enough or didn’t have the requisite players to implement his reactive approach.

    2) Arteta has succeeded in improving the shape and defensive stability of the side. In patches, we are also able to play fast-flowing possession football. He’s also succeeding in improving the performances of a number of players dismissed on here and by the wider supporter base (Torreira, AMN, Ozil, Luiz and evening Xhaka). Only Mustafi is irredeemable.

    3) Notwithstanding improved team and player performances, he is almost certain to want to refresh the squad, move on a few players and bring in players more attuned to what he wants, like any other manager. It’s pretty unlikely that he’ll get the players he really wants this window, so it’ll be the summer.
