No sell > no buy. Arteta dims hopes of major signings.

by & filed under News Review.

Say it quietly, but I quite miss the Europa League. I was like, totally over her, she’s kind of frumpy, not exactly a head-turner, the funny accent doesn’t suit my Brexit sentiments, but now she’s gone… I’m a bit, you know, alone?

Still, you can’t deny that an early kick-off on Saturday isn’t great. When I lived in London, it controlled my Friday night, the danger with the 1230 kick-off is you start drinking at 10am, go to the game, win, then carry on the festivities ready for a brutal 8pm crash… you basically ruin your weekend. Still, at least you get the football out of the way early.

Not sure the players will be treating Saturday that way, the pussies. They have a tough game on paper game against Palace, though scratch beneath the surface and Palace are not having a good time at the moment. They had to field 5 academy players at the weekend in the cup and they lost to Rooney’s Derby. Big Roy Hodgson is not happy with the state of his squad and I’d imagine the Zaha to Spurs/Chelsea/anyone that will save him can’t be helping.

Rumours are that he’s landing Kyle Walker on a 6-month loan from City (honestly wouldn’t say no myself (but it’s obvs the Spurs guy, which I knew lololol)) and Cenk Tosun. Hopefully, they won’t be in place by Saturday.

Good news is this: At least they are weak.

Won’t change the ferocity of the game, but I’ll take it.

Arsenal are sniffing around players themselves, there’s a lot of talk AGAIN about Yan Couto. The Brazilian 17-year-old right-back is going to move to Europe and a fee of £4.2m is being mooted, which is very much within the reach of Arsenal.

As a right-back, what I have deduced from 6 minutes of scouting is he has beautiful tight control of the ball, Hleb liked. Stunning acceleration, so he can move like a modern full-back. Solid delivery and an absolutely ferocious strike. He’d not be a now signing because he’s not 18, but he’d hopefully be very much in the mold of Martinelli.

God bless Edu (or Cagigao)

Talking of kids. Rules are now in effect that you can’t traffic children anymore.

Booooo…

FIFA’s rules say players aged 18 or under can only be transferred abroad if one of three criteria are met: if their parents emigrated for non-footballing reasons, both clubs are in the EU or European Economic Area and the player is aged between 16 and 18 or the player lives within 100km of the new club’

When you think about what went on, it’s quite mad. Football’s #MeToo was literally hiding Fran Merida in the mountains of Spain until he came of age so they could traffic him to London. You’d be disgusted if a bank was doing that, wouldn’t you? Unless you work in the City or Wall Street, where you’d applaud, you disgusting capitalist FIENDS.

Arteta seems to be less confident about bringing players in than he was a week ago.

‘I’m not expecting big things. I’m expecting big things from the players I have now to get through the season in a more balanced way. We always have to be looking because of some injuries’

I suspect that comment is related to this economic reality.

‘We’re not thinking to sell. There’s nothing concrete at the moment on the table, as I said, I’m focusing on the players we have now and this transfer window is a little bit tricky and things might come at the end. But I don’t know which way.’

Though I’d love us to move on £100m worth of talent this window, I think we need to be honest about the situation. There doesn’t appear to be a lot of top talent available, and if we’re in financial trouble, I’d rather us spend what money we do have on the best possible talent in the summer, without the January premium. That Boateng is still being heavily linked at £200k a week tells you all you need to know about the state of the window.

I also have mild ‘don’t say it out loud’ concerns with a massive ramp-up in talent. We’ll raise expectations, probably still not have enough to make top 4, then finish right back in the Europa League places again. It’s not a surprise that Leicester are doing far better this year without Europe to bother them. They have a full 7 days to train with Rodgers and it’s paying dividends. Older players look fresher, younger players are getting better. They won the league like that, exited the cups early, and kept everyone fit.

If we’re not making the Champions League next season, I’d rather a run at the league next year with no Europe. I think it’d be a strategic advantage.

With lower expectations this next 5 months, the manager can experiment more heavily with young players, can put more focus on winning one of the cups, and be free of pressure to chase a goal that looks very much like a stretch from where we are now. He can also spend more time with Edu, Per, and Cagigao planning the summer.

Again, I was totally wrong with how Arteta would approach the cups, so could end up with egg on my face here as well when we unveil Mbappe.

There’s some interesting news that Timo Werner has a €48m release clause in the summer (The Athletic). I’m not trying to tell the club what to do… but my word, wouldn’t he be a great signing if we moved on one of our two contract rebel strikers? He’s young, fast, can play in an aggressive press, and he scores LOTS of goals. Even better news for Arsenal, he turned down Liverpool because he wants to play (so he lacks ambition) and the same is thought to be true of his concerns about joining PSG, where Tuchel is a fan. Chelsea are interested, but again, why would you stifle Tammy Abrahams? According to reports, the English sharpshooter is waiting to see who Frank brings in before signing a new deal.

I think we should move on Werner (just typed Wenger by accident), makes total sense. Certainly a sexier name than Kevin Volland.

On exits, the club is unsure whether to let Eddie go out on loan, but it looks certain they’ll move ESR and John-Jules out. Great news, no point in keeping them if you’re going to bench them. I am very excited by ESR, I think he has immense potential… I also think it should be noted that PSG and Juve were sniffing around John-Jules. The future is bright if they can make that potential a reality.

Right, that’s all I have. See you in the comments.

Werner will probably go to one of the top tier teams in the Summer. Though I do believe we should at least try . We can guarantee regular football and Possibly the Arteta project.

  2. DM

Pedro, I disagree about not wanting Europa next season if (/when) we don’t get CL. I know it takes games out of our schedule and keeps us more fresh, and I know that it doesn’t deliver anything like the level of prestige that the CL does… however, I really struggle to see how we continue to attract top talent if we have no European football at all on offer.

Europa may be sniffed at, but it:
    a) gives another way in to CL
    b) pits us against other top teams across Europe (in later stages)
    c) still has *some* prestige. Or rather, *NOT* being in any European competition really says something about a club. Being in Europa is meh, but you can target CL… not even being in it just makes us a mid-table side.

  3. Un na naai

Just in the pub after a nice early finish and saw Watford beating Leeds 2-0

    Thought wtf?? How’s this happening?
Then realised it’s 3pm on a Thursday and the game I’m watching is featuring Gary Kelly at RB

    It’s from 1992!!

  4. Wasi

    DM
I agree. I think if we don’t get CL we should at least be getting Europa which I think we will ahead of Manu.
My plan would be to have complete focus on the league until January and play only the kids and fringe players in the Europa. Only use Key players in the group stages if our qualification is on the line. The same goes for Carabao cup. The league should be the sole focus for the first 6 months.
Then assess the situation in Jan i.e. our league position and if we can achieve the top 4 , Europa draws and other things than go from there.

I like the sound of Werner, although if I was honest, my dream signing for the summer would be Jadon Sancho for Alexandre Lacazette plus £30m. I reckon if we play it right, they might go for it. After all, isn’t this the reason why we hired Raul and Edu to make deals like this possible? I mean who would have thought we could get Nico Pepe a year ago? Stranger things have happened in football.

They get a seasoned striker plus a mountain of cash to buy another top prospect outright (which is their modus operandi anyway). I know they have Haaland but in Lacazette they get in return a striker of genuine quality who can provide competition and cover for their teenage wonder striker.

Plus, as I said yesterday, Jadon Sancho would get to play with his best mate in Reiss Nelson and under his favourite coach in Arteta.

    Surely it’s worth a shot?

I know if Dortmund had everything their way they would want £100m plus up front, but I can’t see many clubs able to give them that straight up.

  6. Wasi

This Couto guy looks like a tiny version of Aarons with Brazilian Flair. If available for 4.2 mil we should definitely take a punt on him. Will need to develop his decision making and tackling to elite level to counter his tiny stature if he is to survive in the Prem tho.

  7. Wasi

    Leeds
I think your dream will remain a dream.
Plus I could easily see the top clubs go head to head if Sancho were bought into the market. And he will go for 100m+ imo. Top 3 talent in the world easy.

  8. Zacharse

I have a friend in marseille who laughs about this guy Werner. Evidently the word is that he can’t handle the pressure or noise of big games/big stadiums. My bud said that the marseille (marseille & RB played the europa quarter final year before last) ultras were super excited to be facing him because they knew if they made enough noise and targeted him w chants he’d fold and sure enough he did. My friend suspected or was told that it was suspected that werner might have an ear problem due to his issues w noise… this could all just be garbage though. he is young. but he’s got a rep for not being a big game player

  9. Micheal

“FFS guys, was just kidding on Kyle Walker… JUST KIDDING I KNEW I HAD THE WRONG ONE OK”

Don’t knock the Walker- Walker Peters tale. A few years back, some American cowboys bought the old London Bridge. They thought had bought Tower Bridge.

In footballing terms should ‘kidnap ‘ someone with even half the profile !

If I read into what Arteta said it’d mean

•club has not money to buy; and

•club has no offers for the dross to raise fund

    How ☹️…

    Where’s Mustafi?

    Don’t worry.

First, don’t believe Timo would go for €50m or so.

Last, if we did sign him, fans will crowdfund and buy Timo the state of the art, leading edge ear plugs!!

Lol Peds I know what you mean about early kickoffs. I member going to the Arsenal v Chelsea game years ago (0-0) can’t member which year but then ending up in Holloway Bars watching other games drinking throughout the day.

It ended the next morning 5am with me looking at what I drank on the car floor.

Now I just go to games and straight home!

The danger with the 1230 kick-off is you start drinking at 10am, go to the game, win, then carry on the festivities ready for a brutal 8pm

Ha! Ha! I’ve been down that road before. It is even more lethal on a nice sunny summer day!

This reminds me of a story, which took place just before our semi-final game vs Reading. I had arrived at the pub just before 12pm and, having just sat down with my pint, I saw this young Gooner (mid-20’s easy) come in, completely smashed from a long heavy night of drinking. You just knew that the geezer was not going to last the 5 hour pre-match session and end up not going to watch the game.

  14. Pierre

I’m interested to see if the players have learnt from Monday night .

In the first half they totally ignored Ozil 4 times when Pepe, Nelson , Xhaka and Luiz had the opportunity to find him in space on the edge of the area, consequently the move broke down.

    2nd half , different story .

Ozil was found in exactly the same positions , consequently the moves didn’t break down , the link up play was better and we created chance after chance , with Ozil creating the most chances from either side.

Let’s hope Torreira is fit to start as besides his excellent break up play , he is the one player who regularly looks for Ozil when he is on the ball.

Thanks Stan for your unwavering support to make this club compete for the top trophies.

ha. don’t think i want to see the arsenal go back to the days of playing w earplugs in, i’m happy right now! hand brakes off, earplugs out! make that chant happen

  18. Northbanker

    Leeds

Sancho would be great although not a priority position as he is a winger and prefers the role that Pepe should be playing. (maybe Pepe for Sancho??). If we sell Laca then we’re short of quality central strikers

Anyway we’re not signing Sancho so not sure why I’m even bothering with this! lol

  19. Receding Hairline

I have seen a lot of posts championing Upemecano on here, personally i don’t think he is all that. I don’t consider him a reliable defender and i think most of the overrating comes from his height, frame and how good he is on the ball. As a defender who reacts and reads the game well i don’t think he is top shelf. That’s my opinion.

I said the same about De Ligt on here and was attacked by Marko, surprise surprise he is struggling at Juventus, giving away goals like its spaghetti.

I am sick of so called ball playing defenders, give me a defender that loves defending

  20. azed

“I like the sound of Werner, although if I was honest, my dream signing for the summer would be Jadon Sancho for Alexandre Lacazette plus £30m.”

    Leedsgunner

Any official who mentions this would be taken to a mental institution immediately.

Dortmund just signed Haaland, they also have that Spanish striker Alpacer and then Reus who can be deployed as a striker if the need arises, why the fuck would they want Lacazette or sell one of the hottest young payers in the world in a market that saw Maguire go for $80M and Wan Bissaka about $50M?

  21. Mohap

    Receeding

So you’re saying de ligt doesn’t love to tackle ??
You see how the boy celebrates a clearance or tackle like he just won the lottery and you say this ??

    Sigh

  22. Wasi

Cant see Laca sold tbh. Arteta seems to really like his overall game which tbf if very good and adds another dimension to our attack. Arteta seems adamant to involve Laca in the build up and free up Auba and Pepe to run in the space left behind.
+ When is scoring and in form he is usually our best player

  23. Zacharse

Considering that mustafi being sold is probably the only source of funds we’re getting in this window, is arteta’s admission simply a negotiating tactic for low-balling turkish clubs? It would be unthinkable that we wouldnt reinforce the defence during a window. And where has mavropanos being hidden. Thought he was supposed to be pulling up trees

  24. Receding Hairline

“Cant see Laca sold tbh. Arteta seems to really like his overall game which tbf if very good and adds another dimension to our attack.”

Nothing good about Lacazette’s overall game let alone very good. He is a limited player and will always be that. The initial comparisons to Firmino turned out to be laughable.

  25. Pierre

    RH
“I am sick of so called ball playing defenders, give me a defender that loves defending”

Personally, I would rather have a ball playing defender who can also defend, and so would our very knowledgeable manager.

Unlike you , he understands that in the modern game being able to defend is not enough.
We are now in an age when full backs and centre backs are becoming the most important players on the pitch.

You would probably want to go back to a George Graham style back 4 , and as good as they were back in the day, nowadays they would get found out.

  26. CazOnARola

Pieerre, that is ozils arsenal story from the day he joined.
I remember a game where wilshere started in the left wing and then decided to come in and was gesturing to ozil stay out wide. On queue wilshere received the ball when Coquelin won the ball and as expected his final ball was poor.

Lacazette /Aubameyang as well only pass to each other in the final third when they are in scoring positions, no matter how improbable it the final ball is. They ignore ozil in great positions as well as Torreira.

That’s why xhaka – Torreira partnership helps ozil. Pepe also typically passes to ozil but you will find the same issues with Martinelli, nelson, Willock (if he is ever along side ozil at the same time ), Aubameyang, Lacazette and at times guendouzi.

AMN isn’t good enough to make the right decisions as well as executions in the final third anyway so he doesn’t count.

  27. Jamie

Laca + 30m for Sancho was dismissed the other day. We embarrassed ourselves enough with the 40m + 1 joke offer for Suarez.

They just signed Haaland. Not only do they not need Laca and his high wages, Sancho is currently one of the most expensive players in world football.

Maybe Dortmund will take Laca + 100m….

  28. Thorough

Jan Couto, and his like, are the type we should go after.
Infact I’ll take anybody from either the Brazilian and French team in the last under 17 world cup. They were by far the best I saw there.

  29. Pierre

    Caz
It’s no wonder Ozil gets so frustrated , I’m hoping Arteta demands that the players bring Ozil into the game more , as some of the decisions in the final 3rd since Emery came to the club have been very poor.

Hopefully in time we will see more composure and intelligence around the box.

  30. CazOnARola

    Wasi,,
Lacazette has a big problem with the weight on the ball when the passing more than 15 yards away. It will typically under hit or over hit.

But these days he’s having pbms with even 5 yard layoffs which he was good at last season. Although Aubameyang was our top scorer, Lacazette scored some really difficult goals when we were goals down and was also linking up better than he is now.

He has completely gone of the boil act that initial injury.

Last season when we were playing all in the second half of games, torreira to Lacazette to ozil /ramsey were the main themes of all the goals we scored on the counter attacks. Ozil s goal against leicester is a good example.

Aubameyang on the contrary cannot even control the ball centrally when under pressure, because he is worried about getting kicked from behind. He even does the same in wide areas when he is being marked tightly.

So yes Lacazette is likely to continue as he is our best center forward in terms of bringing other midfielders into play. I suspect he is very low on confidence. Hence the extra touches and pbms with his otherwise decent short game.

One guy that can probably do what auba as well as Lacazette does is Martinelli. His hold up play is already better than auba because of his bravery but just lacks the experience /maturity at the moment which is expected.

  31. Receding Hairline

“Personally, I would rather have a ball playing defender who can also defend, and so would our very knowledgeable manager.”

Yea show me where i said i wouldn’t like that, get off your knees with the “very knowledgeable” line, he is married.

  32. CazOnARola

    Pierre,
    It could happen under arteta.

Wenger always maintained “any player can play the final ball”, which meant that whenever ozil /cazorla tried to create overloads in a side, the ball invariably was played into the box by a player that doesn’t have the right accuracy. Wilshere and ramsey kept trying to play the wembley ball.
The situation became much worse when Sanchez became the main man. He always refused to run in behind, always coming short and playing the final back himself.

Now, we just got so many poor players that they don’t really have the intelligence or skill to play the right pass.

I have high hopes from pepe. He tries a dribble too many, but still knows it’s always better to play the ball centrally to a player coming off making the angle as that will open up both sides of the field which is the space players like ozil, cazorla or cesc will always be in.

Bellerin in good prime and monreal were also very good at doing that from wide areas.

Torreira really just wants to play the ball centrally to behind the opponents first line of defense, so in that way he is ozils best mate.

  33. Pierre

    RH

Arteta is showing so many good attributes in his short time in charge.

The one area that he looks very strong , whereas Emery was incredibly weak is man management.

Arteta has already gained the respect of the players as they can see and understand his philosophy.

  34. Pierre

    Caz
Pepe just needs to trust Ozil instead of trying to do too much himself.

Give it inside and play. the one 2 with Ozil and the defender is out of the game.

  35. Lego Hair

    Vickingz

Nelson has definitely piped your mrs!

For what it’s worth I don’t think he’s played very well at all this season but I wouldn’t write him off just yet.

  36. Marko

We’re not signing Timo Werner he’s too good. Arteta coming out with Wenger like comments about transfers it’ll make certain types happy it’ll scare the bejaysus out of everyone else

  37. Jamie

Kane out for 3-4 months. If Spurs lose Son to injury, they’re completely fucked.

Now, can we talk about Ozil please? Pierre hasn’t mentioned him in almost 10 minutes.

  38. Marko

I said the same about De Ligt on here and was attacked by Marko, surprise surprise he is struggling at Juventus, giving away goals like its spaghetti.

In 17 appearences for Juve he has 6 clean sheets and conceded 2 or more goals in just 4 games. Struggling and giving away goals like spaghetti seems a bit far fetched. Upamecano is class too but fuck it call it off who would you prefer we signed

  39. Northbanker

RH – according to Giuntini his France youth coach, Upamecano does have traditional defending qualities and also from what I’ve seen of him too (although admittedly not huge amounts). It’s just possible that he has a more informed opinion than you?? lol

“He loves defending, getting the ball off opponents,” France youth coach Jean-Claude Giuntini said of Upamecano. He generally does get the ball too, winning 66 per cent of his challenges, including an imposing 81 per cent in the air.

    https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/who-is-dayot-upamecano-rb-leipzig-france-world-s-best-young-defender-8110

  40. Pierre

“Now, can we talk about Ozil please? Pierre hasn’t mentioned him in almost 10 minutes.”

it’s ok Jamie , we now have the likes of Marko and receding talking about fictitious players that we are going to sign in January …..or not.

Personally, I prefer talking about things that are relevant at the club and Ozil happens to be very relevant at the moment as we now have a manager who respects quality.

  41. Wasi

    RH
If Lacazette is so poor why did he win our Player of the year award last season.

    Cazonarola and RH
And yes he is not really turning heads this season but its most probably due to him being low on confidence. After Sanchez gone it was only Laca we could rely on to score in the big games and he did so last season scoring some very beautiful goals.
And his hold up play is definitely good not at Firmino level but offers a different kind of threat. His deceptive strength and low centre of gravity if utilised correctly by him can be devastating. One recent example is how easily he turned the World’s most expensive defender in their own box.
Its just about him getting his confidence back in front of the goal. He has been very poor this season in the scoring department but once he gets around that im pretty sure he’ll win all of you’ll back too

Its easy and understandable to turn on the players when our season is going so badly but we fans need to have some patience. Football is played with your feet but it is as much a mind game as it is a physical exercise probably even more so in our generation.
And when your mind isnt right its easy to get off track. Just remember that Laca suffered an injury just before the season began. When he came back Auba was literally scoring every game and Emery didn’t want to stop that. Also in games when Auba was ineffective Emery didn’t trust Laca to go and change the game. Then Freddie didnt bother giving Laca a chance as Martinelli was in fine form.
Ofc this is gonna harm a man’s confidence who was bought to the club to be the main striker.

I believe its only a matter of time before Laca explodes. He’s got a great goal scoring record for Lyon which does show that he CAN do it. Arteta just needs to get him firing again. He is the quality to score some world beaters.

  42. Northbanker

Pierre – that would be boring

Far better for us all to use our time wisely by pontificating on players’ attributes ,that most of us know nothing about other than what we’ve seen on YouTube clippings, and determining their suitability for AFC – which in turn has no intention of signing them anyway

  43. Northbanker

btw does anyone know what Freddie’s actual job is now as he seems no longer to be involved with the bench

  44. Wasi

    North
Arteta said in a presser that Freddie sits in the directors box so that he can have a different view of the game and is in constant contact with the coaches relaying his ideas , etc.

Had we won the Palace game last season the situation would be so much different now and Laca would have still been the Player of the year winner.

FYI Auba scored 30 odd goals last season all competition and Laca was not even close enough
but still it was Laca who got the award from the fans. Says something.

  47. Wasi

Acca do Athletic we looking for an athletic B to B central midfield this window.
Odds on Raul pulling off a Soumare?

  48. Marko

Online voting are the best kinds of voting. Very legitimate and reasonable

  49. Wasi

    Marko
    So what do you want?
Set up a ballot. Every fan to come to the Emirates , write down their vote and put it in a box.

  50. Pedro

Marko, for someone that stated aggressively they don’t abuse people, you seem to be doing a lot of it lately. Behave.

  51. Graham62

Lacazette is my favourite Arsenal player by a mile and a furlong.

He is the ultimate prizefighter on the pitch and gives a 100% even when not upto scratch. He is the scourge of opposing defenders(Maguire was scared shitless last week). He also interacts with the fans from his heart.

I am confident he will find his scoring touch under Arteta and will prove to be a major asset over the coming months.

    We need him……………..big time.

  52. Marko

Marko, for someone that stated aggressively they don’t abuse people, you seem to be doing a lot of it lately. Behave.

I’m not abusing anyone relax. Given that Bamford got a ban for repetitive comments I’m surprised you turn the blind eye to Pierre’s nonsense.

  53. Pierre

    Marko
Saying that his team mates should pass the ball to Ozil when he’s in space is not nonsense.

Anyone who has watched our last 4 games would have recognised that our best periods in those games was when Ozil was on the ball.

  54. Useroz

btw does anyone know what Freddie’s actual job is now as he seems no longer to be involved with the bench“

Arteta’s favourite human drone watching from the top….

Btw, had watched a Yan clip and if this 17yo can do what he did half the time 5m was loose change. Amazing acceleration and ball control; seems to have football brain too. Only thing is he looks small!

It’s be an embarrassment if we couldn’t get Yan with Edu on board etc … assuming the club wanted him.

Kind of resigned to no signings, max one sale, and a loan 😞

Let’s try persuade Martinelli to stay in sunny London rather than joining the junior Brazil squad

  55. CazOnARola

Lacazette also happens to be the best penalty take at the club.
Emery let auba take all of them and he won the golden boot, but if you compare all the players at their previous clubs as well, Lacazette is the most kool and probably pepe will come second.

Of course Lacazette will probably miss the open goal at the moment because of the run that he is on lol.

But arteta has got the team selection and shape right immediately.
We should improvements everywhere even further provided he doesn’t start tinkering and gives this system a chance. Let Nelson and Pepe fight it out for the RW spot and lacazette and Martinelli for the nos 9 or false 9.

Really it was a hamstring can’t say I ever remember someone having surgery on a hamstring injury.

What ankle does he keep having issues with?

  57. Graham62

Nelson/ AMN/ Nketiah/ Saka/ Iwobi/ Smith-Rowe. Actually the list goes on and on. Youngsters who have been isolated and protected from one key aspect of the game. The ability to fight and compete.

Arsenal football club have not only bred youngsters over the years without this basic necessity in their games, they went out and purchased too many players with exactly the same weak mindset.

Clonned to perfection by a manager and a system that nullified leaders and true winners. Those that questioned the system were the ones who decided to leave of their own accord.

Let’s all hope Mr Arteta can reprogram these youngsters to show the fight and hunger that is needed to succeed at the highest level.

    Fingers crossed.

    Finally

    Someone agrees with me..

Pure domestic next season no Europe.

Be best in the long run.

  63. Valentin

    RSPC,

I might be wrong, but I believe that Highbury legend is being sarcastic. He wants Arsenal to get European Football.

Personally I see getting into the Europa League via the preliminary round as a poison chalice. The team starts earlier than everybody else, so being more advanced in their preparation gets some early victories. But by November half the players are dead on their feet and the team slide through the table.
So if we can get Champion’s League football or Europa League football as 5th I’ll take it, but 6th implies or lower (depending on who are the domestic cup winners) could mean the end of any real chance at top 4.
Our saving grace is that Liverpool, Chelsea, ManUtd, ManCity players may be tired because of Euro 2020. Giving us a boost at the beginning of the season. Lacazette, Saliba are unlikely to be called by Deschamps. Özil retired from international football. Nelson, Saka, AMN will not be called by Southgate.

  64. Pedro

RSPC, he or she puts ‘Lol’ after every line to denote that they are joking… like a 14 year old would. lol

Although he may not have come through the Arsenal academy, Walcott (yes, him) was right up there in terms of potential to be truly world-class. He was exciting to watch at times. I’ll never forget his amazing run and assist for Adebayor‘s goal vs Liverpool in the CL.

We haven’t managed to produce our own versions of Giggs, Owen, Rooney, Sterling, Rashford, etc – all of whom became big-game players in their teens.

Saka undoubtedly has potential and I’d like to see how he develops. Martinelli, on the other hand, already looks the business.

  66. China1

EL is better than no EL. Nobody is forcing us to beast our best 11 in the EL game pileup. Like the FA cup and calling cup, if we want freshness we can simply rotate

It’s also a way into the CL if the top 4 run fails which is very possible given there is always a lot of competition for those places between currently about 7 clubs

Lastly if you win it not only do you get a trophy but even a second class European one is something our cabinet generally lacks.

  67. China1

Also winning the EL is better than top 4 qualification. Prize money, trophy, fans day out, (sort of) bragging rights

It’s a no brained not to dump that cup

I’m not familiar with the new spurs striker but I’ll hold off on worrying about it. Milan are trash these days so signing their players might not mean all that much

Have you seen the what’s app videos going round of that Cyprus “rape” case with the Israelis?

My brother and my cousin were in MAGA a few years ago (they are younger than me obvs) and saw a girl next door go home with a rep
    Shag him
All her mates claimed she got raped when they got back to room

    So they see this rep
They were giving him stick and winding him up telling him and he couldn’t believe it

  74. Emiratesstroller

Arsenal do need defenders in view of the long term injuries to Chambers and
Tierney plus ongoing concerns about fitness of Bellerin.

Frankly Messrs Maitland-Niles, Mustafi and Mavropanos are not good enough to play in our first team as we have discovered over last two seasons.

Otherwise I see no necessity to bring in new players. There have been concerns about our midfield, but it is clear that Arteta is beginning to sort out
this department and the balance is looking better than for some time.

Similarly he is persevering with our current crop of forwards. There needs to be less reliance on Aubameyang to score goals.

I have maintained for a long time that there is absolutely no point buying players in January unless they are both an upgrade on what we have got AND
we are not going to pay through the nose for the privilege.

Arsenal have not exactly recruited well in the January transfer window in recent years apart from Aubameyang. We spent £35 Million on Mustafi, and
swapped Mkhitaryan for Sanchez. Last Season we recruited Suarez!

Pedro makes the same point that I have posted on several occasions that it would be better not to qualify for Europe at all unless we are competing in
    Champions League.

The issue is not just about playing on Thursdays and Sundays. Far too often
this season the TV stations have also allocated games where we have had to play on Mondays as well. There have been at least three weeks this season where we have had to play THREE GAMES in 8 days.

  75. China1

If we aren’t in the EL next season and for whatever reasons, for example injuries, start the season poorly, we may have already written off 2021-2022 CL football by November 2020

The idea that just because we don’t have those extra EL games we are going to have a much better league season is very hopeful and if it fails the consequences are worse

  76. China1

Un na he might Be good but the Italian league is pretty poor. Likewise 28m for a striker in 2020 is not really big bucks. If you equate that with us just after our Emirates build (let’s say 2008), it would be like us paying 15m for a striker relative to those market times.

Podolski probably cost us about that way back when. Same for arshavin

If spurs fund a couple of 40+m players without offsetting with sales then I’ll be impressed until then it’s reasonably low outlay. As well they may already have plans to sell xyz player(s) to offset the 28m. There’s still like 3 weeks left before the window closes

You can see where they are net after feb 1st to see how ambitious they are – but 28m for a forward in 2020 is cheap

We’ve spent about 120m on strikers in the last 2 seasons

I know our finances are healthier than spurs, but 28m is chump change nowadays

  79. China1

    Actually that didn’t include Pepe

    Auba
    Laca
    Pepe
    Martinelli

We’re not far off 200m on attacking players in the last couple of seasons

You can minus welbeck for free
    Iwobi was 30
    Giroud was 10 or something

Net outlay on attackers in the last couple of years in the region of 150m

Spurs spending 28m on an AC Milan player isn’t earth shattering in terms of financial ambition I’d say

  80. Un na naai

    China

They just sacked their best manager in modern history and instantly replaced him
Their best striker got injured and out they go and buy a replacement

    We aren’t taking £10m
    We’re talking £30m

And yes it’s cheap but Italian clubs are short of dough
Torreira was cheap by modern comparisons.

Either way it shows that when spurs need something done they do it
    No fucking about
Very un-arsenal way of doing things
    We either
    Make the wrong decision
    Fuck up
    Either some more

  81. China1

I think the hiring of Jose was more of a panic move from spurs than anything else

If you don’t have faith in poch after he was their best manager, then you need to appease the fans with a replacement resembling progress. On the market there were very few managers who were realistically as good or better than poch and willing to join. That narrowed the scope of candidates down to very few and for Jose it happened to be convenient as he was desperate to get back into the game and was promising to turn a new leaf as Mr nice guy

And yeah torreira was cheap but I don’t think his signing was ‘fiscally ambitious’ so to speak. He was seen as a bargain rather than a major outlay which imo is how this new striker will be seen if he comes and is the real deal.

They have moved fast on the manager and player I’ll give you that, but like I said, come the end of January we’ll see where they are net, because 28m is not big money anymore

We’ve been paying more than that even for dross going back a good while now

Mustafi, xhaka, ozil’s contract, pepe, auba, laca, Luiz (relative to his salary and age).

We spent almost as much as they have on a CF (which should come at a premium) for an injured Scottish FB last summer!

Meanwhile they can’t/won’t do an arsenal and offer insane wages to make Eriksen stay.

So you can criticize the players and managers we’ve brought in and our great wish to dither, but in terms of financial ambition we absolutely trash spurs

  82. China1

One thing I want to understand is why only arsenal give a shit about FFP

Chelsea made a 100m loss this year and are now in the market to spend relatively big

PSG have been on the brink of getting in trouble since forever but nothing happens about it

Either we have FFP and actual rules or we don’t. But what pisses me off is how only arsenal seem to need to give a shit about them

  83. Unai

Quickest way to waste all your cash, destroy your summer plans and have a squad full of players you don’t want on big wages?

    Panic buy in January!

Spuds have just lost one of the most valuable strikers in the world for 6 months, gota find some enjoyment from that, they might be in serious trouble now.

  84. Valentin

Kane and Sissoko out for a few months is a massive blow to Spurs.
With NDombele having a hard time with injury, the spine of the team is really weaker. We may be able to overtake them.

  85. WinOrDie

Between Ibrahim Sangare and Boubakary Soumaré , Who do le-grovers think is a better candidate to solve our midfield problems?

  86. Habesha Gooner

    Moussa Sissoko

“As a child I was an Arsenal fan, I really liked Wenger’s team playing style and admired champions like Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp,” Piatek

Following ongoing assessment by our medical staff over the past week, we can confirm that Harry Kane will undergo surgery to repair a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring,” a Spurs statement said.

  88. Batistuta

My man Piatek coming to England, hopefully he lights it up there, good for him to get away from the Ivan Gazidis clown show here in Milan

  89. Daniel Altos

Not to sound like a pessimistic whining bitch…why don’t people rate Ibrahima Konate the leipzing cb?In my opinion he is the better defender between him and Upamecano, whom I hear alot of noise on but none on Konate. The one thing Upamecano has over Konate is he can pick a pass.

  90. Freddie Ljungberg

    D.A

Probably because there has been no transfer rumours about him and his contract is much longer than Upamecanos.

Don’t think it has anything to do with people rating him or not.

  91. Romford Pele

Batistuta, love him! He’s a Gooner to you know. Started his AC Milan career on fire but has been quite poor this year. Maybe a move will reinvigorate him.

Plus he has the best celebration too!

  92. Freddie Ljungberg

I sincerely hope Piatek tanks hard at Spurs and they have to sell him for half of what they’re paying now. After that I wish him all the luck in his career. Gooner or not I can’t get behind the idea of them lot getting a top player

  93. Romford Pele

Freddie, is the deal actually happening?

His profile is definitely suited to the PL but I can’t imagine Spurs signing someone like him unless they have serious doubts about Kane’s long-term fitness.

They’ve needed a backup for Kane for years, looks like they’re getting a very good one.

In the mean time we’re giving Xhaka chance number 57 to prove everyone wrong that pace and athleticism isn’t a requirement in the PL, smh.

Big failing from the board if they don’t back Arteta this window, a lot to put on a first time manager to elevate this team by coaching alone when our rivals are using the market to either fix their issues or to get stronger overall.

Chelsea and Spurs both getting strikers it looks like, Man U are going to strengthen, and her we are, smh.

  97. Romford Pele

Freddie, Ah ok just read. Sky Sports reporting they’ve had discussions but no concrete offer yet. It’s always hard to know what’s true during transfer window times though, rumours galore.

Arteta in his presser said yesterday that he’s not expecting anything big though confirmed that they are looking at players. Sounded very cryptic. So I don’t know if Raul and Edu have told him to wait until the summer or what. But I remember in the summer the media were reporting that we wouldn’t spend and when we did. Even Ornstein denied we had interest in Pepe before the rumours turned out it was actually true so maybe a bit of caution at the moment.

  98. Romford Pele

Upamecano and Soumare are my dream signings for our spine though. Would add so much. Even if we can’t get them done this month we should try and agree the deals before the summer. Euro 2020 is this summer and we all know how prices can inflate after a good tournament so i hope Raul and co are preparing adequately. They should listen to the style of player Arteta wants.

  99. Freddie Ljungberg

    Romford

Those 2 would be my top picks too.

Soumare apparently available this month but a lot of competition for him.

Barca in for Upamecano now so won’t be easy if he doesn’t decide that’s a step too far for him right now.

Wonder if there’s any truth to the Cavani bid rumours, would be cheap with 6 months left of his contract, maybe we’re trying to raise money by selling Auba before his value drops.
Would probably net us 40m alone.

Hope it’s just holding their cards close, would be nice to bed in some top prospects the rest of this season so we’re ready to explode from the start of the next one.
