Racism reared its ugly head again, this time at Spurs, Rudiger claimed he heard monkey chants heading in his direction. The problem was so bad, the Spurs stadium announcer had to ask that it stop.

Quite incredible that people feel emboldened enough to do such disgusting things in public. This sort of thing isn’t even just the fault of the people doing it, it’s the people that sit near the idiots and laugh it off. It’s everyone’s responsibility to make sure this sort of thing doesn’t go on in the stadium. We had a guy who sat near us that did gross things like that, he lost his ticket because Arsenal fans wouldn’t tolerate it.

Karma was a bitch, BORN WINNER Jose Mourinho recorded another loss against a top side as Spurs capitulated against a Chelsea side that have been all over the place of late. I love it. His nice-as-pecan-pie demeanour is usually linked to how well his side is playing… when shit hits the fan, the mask will slip and he’ll be bitching about the lack of investment and his hideous lot in life. He’s the ultimate victim.

On the Arsenal front, we’re being linked with Kevin Volland. I don’t feel sexy at the thought, but I can kind of see what the idea is there. He’s good at holding up the ball, he’s fast, and he brings people into the game. He’s not as good at finishing as Auba, but he has a lot more assists. He’s also more industrious and powerful than both our strikers, Bayer have usually had a hard pressing approach to the game, which is more in keeping with the sort of vision Arteta will have of the game. I think he’s a bit like a shorter Giroud, which again, doesn’t arouse me, but no one has been involved in more goals than him in 2019 (Germany)

We’re also being linked with Dries Mertens as he has a year left to go on his deal. A spectacular player who should have moved to a bigger club a few years ago. He’s 32 years old though, he’s playing in a slower league, my suspicions are this sort of linkage is just to bump him to the top of mind for clubs looking for a quick solution this summer. I’m not sure he’s the age demo we need, it’s not like we have much chance of top 4 this season, regardless of how close we are. Short-termism is pointless and that Swiss guy we had was a disaster.

Szoboszlai is the midfielder that has me waking up in a mess. The Hungarian would vote for Brexit, wear a Maga hat to the office, and probably be an HR issue if he worked in an advertising agency, but damn… what a player.

He’s big, powerful, can dribble, shoot from long range and he works at a club that has one of the most effective approaches to pressing in the world. He reminds me of a cross between Kai Havertz and Aaron Ramsey. Would be a dream type of player to slip into our midfield. Wouldn’t mind his partner, Haaland, playing upfront… but it looks like OGS is very close to him.

Arteta has been talking more with the club and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

“The direction’s going to be very clear & it’s not going to be negotiable. I will need the players to be on board with the right attitude, with the right passion & commitment. Step by step, we will be improving and reaching to find the right identity for us”

“We have to have passion, we have to be dominant, we have to be aggressive. We have to play in the opponent’s territory as much as we want. I want the ball, I want to attack them as much as possible, I want to prevent them from attacking as much as possible”

If you were a player, how could you not be excited about a manager that wanted to play football the right way?

Instead of rambling off on why I love the noises from Arteta, here is a solo podcast for your ears delight, enjoy, give me a 5* for Christmas.

“but because your black best friend knows you are not racist when you use the n-word (like in a song), shouldn’t embolden you to use the word in front of other black people who aren’t your friends“

Not the same at all, I’ve not used any racist language, I’ve taken the piss with stereotypes and explained to you why that’s justifiable.

You happen to associate any mention of stereotype as an automatic racially insulting connotation, and you can continue that level of offence as its entirely your prerogative. Doesn’t for a second alter the intention of my speech though, which was what I was highlighting with the ‘good cunt, bad cunt’ remark. To illustrate it’s intention that’s king.

I’ve gauged Receding from previous exchanges and know he doesn’t take offence to what’s said, it simply irritates him which is exactly the point of the needle. I’m not sorry for using all subject matter in my exchanges on here, there’s a total absence of malice whether you choose to believe or accept that.

  2. UTarse

When I first saw the mertens rumour I wasn’t that impressed…. my brother in law landed in blitey yesterday from Naples and he’s adamant he’ll do a very good job for us. Top player, top professional and could be a good stop gap allowing us to sell one of Auba or laca to raise a net 40-50mm…. hopefully to spend on Partey.

I really do hope they make 3-4 changes this January at the minimum, no use mikel talking a good game if the shit he has at his disposal can’t play a good game.

  3. Graham62

    Ishola70

Pains me to say it but Chelski were superb yesterday.

Spuds were outplayed and outfought all over the pitch.

    2-0 flattered Spuds.

  4. G

Pepe has to go as he has played at least 15 games..
If some of you had your way Henry an Bergkamp would have been got rid of as well

  5. Pedro

Love how much Arteta talks about feeling out the energy of the club and the players. Really believe that Emery didn’t have that knack of being able to pick up on the non-verbal cues at the club.

  6. Nelson

According to RP, “Workrate can always be improved.”

I can’t wait to see the workrate of our experienced players be improved.

  7. Romford Pele

“I can’t wait to see the workrate of our experienced players be improved.”

If they don’t improve then they go, simple as.

Silva, Gundogan etc are not naturally athletic players but no problem buying into Pep’s methods.

As Pedro said, you can’t just come in and upset half the squad, it’s gotta be a slow churn. Try and get them to buy in. If they don’t over the next six months we’ll start to see change. People expecting us to have half a different squad after Jan will be left upset.

This time last year Leicester were sitting in the bottom half of the table Virtually the same squad under Rodgers are now top 3 in the league. I’m not saying we’ll do that as we need to change our athletic profile but there are definitely incremental improvements you can see over the next 6 months.

  8. Romford Pele

Just as i’ve said that Arteta has just been speaking to the media on Sky Sports News. He says that he has some ‘ideas’ for the Jan transfer window and will sit down with them over the next couple days.

  9. Guns of Hackney

Bergkamp was already an outstanding player but stagnated at Inter.

    Henry was 21.

Pepe is 24, soon to be 25. He must up his very basic game. Run fast, lose ball, misplace pass is NOT the resumé of a top talent worth £72m.

Hopefully the Mikel Magic will inspire the Arsenal and it’s players to better things as well as installing some pride in the performances.

If o was getting £100+ a week I’d be fucking embarrassed to not turn in at least an 8/10 performance every week.

  10. Champagne charlie

“Love how much Arteta talks about feeling out the energy of the club and the players. Really believe that Emery didn’t have that knack of being able to pick up on the non-verbal cues at the club.“

He’s been here 7 minutes and already discussed body language from the stands, looking into the players eyes, visually grasping the identity he wants to bring to the table. The man is impressive as fuck, and if he delivers half of what’s suggested we’ll be hugely improved.

  11. Jamie

Am I the only one who misses Emery’s press conferences?

Seriously though, Arteta is hitting all the right notes in his interviews. It would be tremendous if he could get us firing again.

Keeping clean sheets has to be the order of the day. We’re beyond parody at the back.

  12. Ishola70

Arteta needs a win against Bournemouth.

    Energy, intent, hunger, body language.

That was shown yesterday by one of the teams in that London derby.

Arsenal also showed this in their defensive play near the end of the match against Everton. Everton had a chance on goal and three Arsenal players were seen lunging across to block out the shot.

Hopefully we see more of this in all areas of the pitch going forward.

  13. Marko

it’ll make his job hard if he loses 7 senior trouble makers in one go.

Completely disagree. This team minus certain types will improve or at the very least make HIS life less difficult. Mikel’s job is tough enough without having to deal with certain types openly working against the club because of their selfishness.

  14. Guns of Hackney

It’s amazing how only now people realise that a great orator is invaluable at a press conference.

Arsene was a genius at a press conference. He could dodge, swerve and make you think his side had just won 10-0 at the Nou Camp rather than losing 2-0 to Nottingham Forest.

Arteta is a great communicator. His players will 100% understand what is required.

Not some garbled message like the ones you send on your HAM radio.

  15. Gentlebris

‘I really wished I understand what this even mean, didn’t address you,the person I did acknowledged it and here you are’

    Ustyno,

I’m always careful about people who give compliments when none is due, but that doesn’t mean I class you that way, I was just having a sunny go at your comment.

My weakness is that once I see an opening for banter, is too difficult for me to let it pass, and when I’m kidding……. well sometimes people do think I mean business.

    All forgiven?

CG“Because since Wenger left- we have complete imbeciles running the show.”Sorry, but this is nonsense. Sanllehi and Edu are serious, intelligent, competent men. They may make a mistake or two — everyone does, even the best — but they are smart, ambitious guys, not imbeciles.
    ———-
I guess your bum chum-Ivan Lazidis was a highly intelligent and competent man also?

How is Lazidis doing over at AC Milan in between?

And why did he hot tail it, to Italy,as soon as Arsene Wenger left his trail of skid marks in his wake?

    Answers please?

  17. Ernest Reed

Seriously Pedro, i love your openness and forgiveness qualities – but why extend it to someone like Bamford, whose sole purpose is to either annoy, call people out as racists just because he can, and demand banishment of those whom he deems offensive to him? Seriously, the guy is destroying your blog with his inane brand of insanity.

  18. Marko

He says that he has some ‘ideas’ for the Jan transfer window and will sit down with them over the next couple days.

Look at the moment he’s saying all the right things for me. He’s not coming in and talking bullshit about the squad and the players being good enough and this and that or making statements about chances. He’s clearly for the betterment of the club and himself talking about January and replacing players. And he’s absolutely right to do that. He does not need 6 months to determine if certain players are capable of buying into what he wants he’ll already know.

  19. Left testicle

Liking it so far. Saying all the right things. Looking forward to seeing his team selection and how he operates from the dug out on Thursday.

  20. Ernest Reed

You get an uneasy feeling that Arteta may be stuck with whats on display today. As much as he may want to unload problematic individuals, it likely is not that simple. Its more likely that his right now job is to change the attitude in the clubhouse and work from there. Unfortunately Rip Roarin Raul has made a mess of what little money was available for transfers, so its a live within your means for the foreseeable. One step forward, two steps back…

  21. PhD2020

Talking the talk is one thing..Walking it,is another..

But let me tell you, aside from having a philosophy, a vision, communication skills , it really comes down to your man-management skills as the primary total sum package.Honestly, this is so under-rated,it is sickening..

How you are able to relate to your troops..
The guys in the front line..

You come across like an Andre Villas Boas…Curtains mate.Even the juniors will sniff you out..Down tools and go MIA.

    Judgement is suspended till summer…
Just hope, this is not an Andre Villas Boas moment in the making..

    GOH,

Arteta has something old Wenger never had…..fierceness

    Like Klopp, Jose and Pep.

And in football coaching business, genius and fierceness = Authority.

But genuis alone is insufficient. The rich uneducated spoilt brats in the room have to feel you when you walk in.

Sanchez would never ever disrespect Klopp like he did Wenger, and Klopp is as amiable as they come.

  23. Guns of Hackney

    Gentle

I agree with that. It’s like when teacher is away and a sub comes in and mayhem breaks loose.

Emery seemed like a decent chap but not a guy you didn’t mind taking the puss out of. And that’s not fair. He didn’t deserve that. He just wasn’t right for Arsenal.

Mind you, one gets the impression if a manager shouted at a player they would find a way of suing the club for hurt feelings.

  24. Left testicle

One thing that winds me up and shows our lack of professionalism is when we concede a set piece. A lot of our players turn there back to the ball – they switch off and aren’t prepared for a quick corner/throw-in/free kick. That’s a basic that should be drilled in to them.

  25. Ernest Reed

@Phd – i think the players now realize something even worse if they tune out Arteta. They will incur the wrath of a now increasingly angry fanbase. They need to get on board and quickly and dissing yet another manager is not advisable.

    ………
    Ernie,
Agreed, but it’s surprising the number of fans who give Ozil a free pass.

  28. Tom

If Arteta is even remotely serious about turning this club around he should implement an across the board glove ban and introduce universal calf press exercises for all players at all times.
But he won’t and that’s why he’ll fail , which is what I had predicted even before I knew he would get the job.

The reason white guys are so good at monkey chants is because we share 99 % percent of DNA with chimps who, although technically aren’t monkeys, also are very good at imitating monkey chants.

Of course the white guys who direct them at black players from the stands didn’t come from monkeys themselves but rather are direct descendants from Adam and Eve – which goes without saying- and I ‘d bet my left one are proper good fearing Christians.

Great interview though, I’m genuinely excited about Arteta.

“Obviously there were things to improve but those things have to be non-negotiable. Those things have to be on the table in every game, every training session and the way we’re going to live together.”

Arteta was also asked about Ljungberg’s suggestion that he wouldn’t have picked Mesut Ozil for the last game, even if he’d been fit. Substituted against Manchester City the former Germany international kicked his gloves to the floor in a fit of anger.

“It’s a question for him [Freddie], I just wanted him to make a decision to pick the best possible lineup to win against Everton.

PhD, I think it’s a combination of arrogance, too much praise, too much money and poor management.

Clearly he barely gives a fuck, hes made it and has no reason to try.

He bulldozed through the front doors.

How comes only 2 hours later- during the press conference- alone- has the suit come off and he is wearing the tawdry and cheap clobber?

Was he told he wear that top?
And if so- who told him?
And why didn’t he ignore them?
Or did he decide to do so on his own whim?

What worries me is he is being told what to wear.
Only two people have told me what to wear in my life- and both were escorted off my premises and ended up in divorce.

The Arsenal manager should always wear a suit. And most certainly in their opening press conference.

Seems to me the dilution and erosion of the Arsenal managers position continues…..and I for one dont like it.

I agree he never handled the Chelsea side well, but a lot of that was naive behaviour imo, he’d not come across a side full of genuine stars before and that was a harsh lesson. That said, he was hounded by the media who sucked the dick of every Englishman at Chelsea, even Spurs. He was Joe Foreigner daring to act competent despite earning prestigious positions at a tender age.

As I say, got a lot of time for AVB, he’s no enemy or fraud as I see him. I think, and I’ve said before, he’s got another run at the very top of the game within his career. Maybe someone of whom too much cake too soon and it’s kicked him back a few notches.

    1. He was incredibly arrogant and obnoxious
    2. He was taking over a much more powerful dressing room
    3. He sacked all the good people. His spree was so extreme, I think he was stopped at one point. He tried to build walls around him. Did the same at Spurs.

Think he learnt his lesson the hard way.

Arteta seems incredibly focused on the idea that it is HE who has to convince THEM that his ideas are worth following.

He seems very focused on culture, making sure players feel right, treating them as individuals and building a culture around high performance.

Could all go to shit, but I think he’s different to AVB.

    Not talking losing 7.

But losing Xhaka and Ozil is a good start. Don’t really want to lose Aubameyang, would prefer to get shot of Lacazette, but likely we see £70 Million for Aubameyang so that very much is a sell to buy type scenario.

Whereas Xhaka and Ozil is a good sign to the rest of the squad that bad attitudes, repetitive mistake, spineless pussiness (just Ozil that one) will not be tolerated.

Don’t buy this ‘clean slate’ bollocks. That essentially means Ozil has been a lazy spineless twat for Wenger, Emery and Ljungberg and displayed appalling attitude toward Emery and Ljungberg because they didn’t indulge him like Wenger and yet we’re suppose to think a) his attitude will improve suddenly, or b) that any improvement would even be acceptable as he picks and chooses when he will improve his attitude and who for.

I think Ozil could be such a good sign to the rest of the squad. Even if we pay half his ridiculous wage just fuck his victim mentality, appalling attitude and poisonous presence out of the squad.

How long before Arteta is ‘picking on him’?

  79. Marko

Where’s Auba going though? Despite two games in a row where they’ve failed to score Zidane says absolutely no way Real sign a striker. Can’t see Barca being interested in Auba

  80. Pedro

CA, I’m with you, but Ozil has a lot of influence behind the scenes… and if you can get him playing, it works for everyone.

Very unlikely, but he has to give it a go to be seen as fair.

I suspect in 10 weeks time, most of the starting places will be propped up by kids.

    For the record

The English call the Welsh sheep-shaggers due to an old trick used by the Welsh against their gullible English neighbours in medievel times, when the English had a nasty habit of fucking sheep. When Wales adopted English law they noticed the penalty for shagging a sheep was less than stealing one (due to the English’s habit) so whenever they were caught stealing a sheep they would instead say they were planning to fuck it instead to avoid the fine.
Therefore there is a very long list of crimes involving Welshmen shagging sheep, although it is only the English who would actually ever fuck a sheep

  83. Cesc Appeal

    Marko

    Potentially PSG.

Mbappe is wanted by Madrid and Cavani is leaving on a free in the summer.

    Pedro

But this is the millionth friggin time it’s ‘let’s give him a fresh start’ for Ozil.

New attackers, new STs, new manager, another new manager, another new manager.

Getting Ozil playing just means Ozil doing what he’s good at which is very one dimensional (though he’s not even doing that).

He will never do what players like Hazard, De Bruyne, David Silva, Bernardo Silva etc have done which is add running and tenacity to their games when it’s not naturally in their game.

The problem we’ve got is Ozil thinks he’s far bigger than the club and he knows before he went off to fuck up Milan that Gazidis gave him a winning hand every time in his ridiculous deal.

The only use he has left is as an example.

Whatever system Arteta wants to create Ozil will break. I said that with Emery. Whatever you want to do Ozil will wreck it.

Arteta said he wants the opponents to have the ball for as little time as possible. What he’s talking about is City style aggressive press for a short duration to ensure as few oppositions action before a tackle/interception/error as possible. Yeah, good luck with Ozil in the side. He jogs towards players in a press and watch him, he slows down when he gets near the player.

That centre of the opposition final third is a constant release valve for any pressure we put on because the perennial victim cannot and will never press or do any off the ball duty.

  84. Pedro

    PHD,

He’s going into a place rife with bad eggs, he’s setting the tone for a serious job.

I think it’s part stick, part sledgehammer… high-performance culture can’t afford any failure in the setup. Question is this: If he makes a decision, will he see it through.

Emery failed his big decisions every time.

  85. Pedro

CA, agree completely… but he’s a new manager, if he breaks to many eggs in one go, it’ll slow him down.

If he brings Ozil in, tells him what the deal is, and he refuses to play along… he’s finished.

That said, you never know what a previous playing relationship might do for him..

    Naive, I know.

  86. Cesc Appeal

    Pedro

    Really irritates me.

Such a pathetic waste of space and because of an appalling executive decision he can behave like a lazy, fat spoiled 12 year old and get away it.

He will break whatever system Arteta wants, I promise you now. Especially if it’s a front loaded press. The club then have to back him.

Emery had the right idea with Ozil. He worked him out inside a month of his first EPL season. Where he lost it with me was then welcoming him back into the side because of fan pressure which added up to precisely nothing…except undermining the manager.

We all know an Ozil, or we’ve all known an Ozil at school or work.

The way,he has been sounding off recently, with the’I’m watching you,’ mantra?

    2. He was taking over a much more powerful dressing room
Well,we have a weak dressing room? So,how is he going to galvanise them?

Chuck a few players under the bus,to be made an example of?
Scare factor?Or an arm around the shoulder, dependent on the player in question?

    3. He sacked all the good people. His spree was so extreme, I think he was stopped at one point. He tried to build walls around him. Did the same at Spurs.

What’s to say,M.A does not build walls around him?
Will,he have the backing of the BoD,is another question?Especially to implement his ideas, his philosophy, his players?

Will he eventually, sack off the incompetents he is surounded by?Out of frustration?Because promises he was given prior to taking the job, never manifested?

    Man United, Chelsea, Atletico.

If I was Klopp I’d go all our for him in Jan. Would more than guarantee Liverpool the league too. (Even though I can’t see them bottling it this time without Auba)

  91. Danny S

The issue we have had for years is that we have tried to shoehorn players into a philosophy just because they are expensive players.
We have accumulated a few of players that one way or another have terrible attitudes and if arteta has the power to come in and remove those players regardless of what the fans or other players think then hopefully we can start to improve how the team thinks and acts on the pitch.
Then continue bringing in players that suit the ethos of the manager. Mentality is so important at the top level and we have some very questionable mentalities in our squad.

  92. Chika

Arteta is surely hitting all the right notes.

From my point of view , Arteta putting Ozil in the starting line would be the perfect way to irritate the Ozil obsessives.

posters like Cesc Appeal and Marko ( and a few others ) are already throwing their toys out of the pram because Arteta is giving everyone a clean slate( as I successfully predicted he would), which of course is the right rules.

    I am a pessimistic,as you know.

    Hope your call comes true…
Just don’t see it,as the foundations remain the issue..The culture of the club originates from the top.

Your philosophy originates from the head, not from the middle, not from the bottom.

As much,as M.A might try(if he is successful),he will be hamstrung by the politics,by the powers that be,that will clip his wings,in order to safeguard their own positions.

This is the philosophy of the club,in my humble opinion.
M.A. is just a pawn in the game of bigger fish to fry..

I can guarantee,we will be no nearer to challenging for the top 4 position, than we were a decade ago-rolling forward a decade or so down the line -2030..

“From my point of view , Arteta putting Ozil in the starting line would be the perfect way to irritate the Ozil obsessives.”

Why would you want to see fans irritated? Surely shouldn’t you want to see the team do well and start playing better? Saying you’d like to see Arteta get the best out of Ozil is a fair enough if unlikely scenario but to just want to see other fans irritated says a lot more about you than it does them.

  100. Marko

I’m looking forward to Arteta’s first team selection on Thursday , whoever is selected.

Well it’s just after Christmas and away from home so expect an Ozil sickie. Question then becomes how many sickies will Mikel tolerate before he realizes Ozil is a sponge. I’m guessing that those January conversations he’s having Xhaka and Özil are at the top of it
