Jorge Mendes throws his man into the mixer

by .

We’re in that moment in time where people on Twitter and trying to guess when the manager is going to be moved on.

‘Happening tonight lads’

I know it doesn’t need to be pointed out, but I can assure you, no one at Arsenal has a hotline into a 15-year-old on Twitter called @XhakaMyBae239.

That said, it’s clear that Arsenal aren’t in control of the leaks at the moment. It seems to me that many of the different factions within the club are running different stories in the press.

The alarming story that seemingly blasted out of nowhere yesterday was that Nuno is now a favourite for the role. Like being linked to Charles Nzogbia back in the day, this rumour doesn’t moisten my loins in any way whatsoever. In fact, I’m so dry at the thought, I’m applying Nivea Men to avoid dangerous chafing.

Nuno is a very good manager, he’s done amazing things at Wolves with a small squad of talented players, I’m just not that into the idea.

Two reasons.

  1. Underdog counter-attacking football isn’t where I want to be as a club. We basically hired that mode of operation in with Unai Emery. We’d just be bringing in a manager with better English to deliver that approach. When he was given a Porto side that teams deep blocked against, he couldn’t function and was fired.
  2. I detest the contacts network approach to management appointments. The idea that Raul would bring Mendes into the mixer again would really send a message that we’re fully under control of the super agents. Not a good look. Where has that landed us so far? David Luiz looks a complete horror show of a signing as well as an immense waste of money and agents fees. Unai Emery was straight out the back pocket of Raul, we did no due diligence, the push was so aggressive, people didn’t even care that the manager couldn’t speak English and had been mercilessly mocked for his grasp of French and Russian prior to that.

I just don’t think there’s much of an argument for bringing him into the mixer here. He took Valencia to 4th, Emery took them to 3rd three times. He went to Porto and failed to pick up any trophies or move the club forward in a season. He’s having a moment in the sun with Wolves, but ultimately, I think the stain of being so close to a super agent is too much… he was literally Jorge Mendes first-ever client way back in 1996.

I hope the same machinations pushing Jose and Enrique stories are trying to push Nuno onto the shortlist of managers we should speak to.

Unai Emery is taking charge of the game on Thursday against Frankfurt, some think this could be his last hurrah before he’s moved on, I’m not so sure. He’ll no doubt turn in a win there, then it’s Norwich, Brighton and West Ham… then the club is in the December zone.

Unless things are really rough, it’s hard to imagine us hiring a new person into a stretch of games where they’ll have to face United, City and Chelsea. That would not be a good start. If things really are that bad by December, I’d imagine we’ll bring in Freddie and Bould. Interesting to read that Freddie doesn’t have full UEFA licencing yet to be an actual manager, not sure if that’s accurate, but that could mean Steve Bould in the dugout.

Interesting to read that Unai stopped sending scouts live to watch opposition and doesn’t read dossiers compiled internally by our scouts… because he’d rather do it himself. When a manager starts hoarding responsibility like that, you know you have a bad one. I questioned his epic video analysis when he joined. Players have short attention spans, even shorter if they have to strain to understand the contents of your analysis. I cannot imagine how bad it must be sitting in a video lounge listening to Emery talk about the potency of Southampton’s threat to our defence.

Anyway, it’s coming to an end soon… let’s hope that Raul has something more creative than a Whatsapp ‘please help’ message to Mendes.

Listen to my damn podcast. Thanks!

” I’m just not that into the idea.”

Just 1 reason : he’s not Arteta.

Dissenter

Pedro is going off the edge again because it appears that Arteta isn’t being considered.
We are back to this “contact list” brouhaha again?

It doesn’t require a PhD to know whay Arteta isn’t on any list to rectify the unflushed toilet bowl of turd that Arsenal is currently
We need a manager that can work into a dressing room and command immediate attention, not one that will still need to learn fundamentals of head coaching on the job.

HighburyLegend

“The English press reports a probable exodus of players Arsenal, tired of the choice and management of their manager, the Basque Unai Emery. The former boss of the PSG is criticized decisions on the pitch that led the Gunners to a poor 8th place, but also for his relationship with his players. The latters would be dissatisfied and think of a departure next summer.”

It’s much too fucking late anyway…

Marc

“Interesting to read that Freddie doesn’t have full UEFA licencing yet to be an actual manager”

Didn’t know that – how far short is he? Could we be looking to rush that through before outing Emery with a new full time manager joining in the summer?

Right now fuck knows what’s going on at Arsenal. In what can only be some sort of cosmic irony I had an email half an hour ago from Arsenal asking me to complete a survey on match day experience.

Not sure they’ll like what I had to say.

Uwot?

It’s obvious. We need a Rogering.Brendan Rogers. But would he leave Leicester in their current position? That’s the dilemma.Dont want a Johnny Foreigner unless it’s Simeone.which is slim to nil.As for some strange reason his name never makes the supposed shortlist.

How does emery turn up for work and try and control a group of players that he knows full well , do not want him to be there ? Pride alone should make the man walk away , but it seems he has none. Just admit you can’t sort out this mess , you tried your best but ultimately it hasn’t worked out – the footballing world would have more respect for you if you did that , rather than be sent packing whilst kicking and screaming

I really think it’s about waiting to be fired and walking away with a pay-off at this point. Emery will get another job with a mid table club in Spain.
That, I think is the motivation for still showing up for work and pretending to manage the team.
The shame is on the Arsenal executive management and the owner.

If the appointment of Nuno coincides with Arsenal becoming a satellite Portuguese club then this certain agent appointment may turn out decent.

Getting in Portuguese players as well as a conveyor belt of younger foreigners playing in the Portuguese League could be good.

I’ve always liked that combination associated with Portuguese football of pragmatism but also sprinkled with flair.

Pedro, Personally I don’t find Nuno “alarming”. And I think your point about the dangers of super-agent fuelled contacts football is positively Wemgeresque in its Puritanism. I think there are significant differences between Nuno and Emery’s brands of “underdog counterattacking football.” Nuno’s brand is much more organised, consistent and effective, and there are not the lurches in formations and personnel that have been a feature of Emery’s football this season. Your point about wanting Arsenal to be a side that plays offensive possession football is well made though, and I’m not sure Nuno can make us become that kind of… Read more »

Read article about Chris Wilder a few weeks ago, apparently he bought a bunch of no-nonsense Yorkshire men so he knows they will always give 100% effort, no worries about how team will play away at Burnley on dreary Monday evening.

I think Arsenal need to focus much more on athleticism and attitude when we buy players, too many southern softies in our squad. Sanchez was our last player who gave his all every game and we got rid of him when we needed two or three more players like him to start competing properly again.

bennydevito

Pedro, Where are you getting this myth about Raul being responsible for Emery from? There is nothing to substantiate that whatsoever. Gazidis said himself right from the horse’s mouth that Emery was on the 8 man shortlist right from the start. It was reported on the dot com, all the major papers and in interviews with Gazidis. Gazidis was Raul’s boss, not the other way around. Raul wanted Enrique and that too was reported. Gazidis also said that Emery made it through to the final 3 and that Gazidis, Raul and Sven all independently put Emery as no 1 out… Read more »

I’ve gone down that route till I’m blue in the face, same with some of the player signings under Sven and even some before Sanllehi joined.

There are those on here who will find ways to blame Sanllehi for just about anything. Ask Valentin how he’s responsible for the 6 mass extinctions Earth’s undergone / undergoing!

Rich robbins

Guys, this whole debacle has become boring. We have a management incredibly unprepared and paralyzed. There is no North Star for the expectation or culture. It is time for leadership that dominates with win at all cost; win with a coaching unit with collaborative trust in a plan, that speaks the same language in their coaching and in directing the players in no uncertain plans. Time the board woke the hell up!

jwl

bennydevito – Pedro has massive blindspot when it comes to Gazidis and his role in banter seasons of last five years. I am convinced Pedro’s club insiders who email him are Gazidis people and they protecting their boss but who knows.

Spanishdave

The dark horse could be Viera, I am not sure how he organises his teams but he would jump at the chance mid season.
Our priority is to repair the defence and midfield and he should be able to sort that out.
It’s sad that with 18 months of Wenger going we are back to square one, but as you guys have said the club is in the hands of greedy non football men who have no feelings for the fans or the clubs history.

Marc

dave

The only problem with your “greedy non football men” line is that for them to get what they want the club needs to be “successful”. Now the definition of successful can vary but right now that means getting back in the CL. We spent a pretty decent chunk of money in the summer with that in mind. Your premise comes across as if they don’t care.

salpardisenyc

Its like fighting for crumbs saying Raul, Sven or Gazidas was responsible, in the end they were all culpable in hiring of Emery. Water under the bridge at this stage. More worrying is fact Raul is now spearheading with a very suspect vision, fact Emery is still in a job after the debacle he’s overseen thus far is a massive indictment. Looks to be really struggling with next move with serious options available or attainable. At certain point one has to ask whats his vision for club, cause i’m not sure he knows.
