Come on everyone, be strong, not long to go, just one more week of relentless boredom over the international week, then we can return to politics. I’m kind of hoping that Jezza Corbyn will continue his epic ‘TAKE IT BACK’ campaign to The Arsenal. Take the club out of foreign ownership and fund it using the power of the nation! Free tickets for everyone. A beautiful vision of the game.
I’d vote for that.
The Mirror is reporting that Unai Emery has been given 4 easy games to save his job. The club are trying to make things as simple as possible for the manager to stay in place until the end of the season. I think more and more folk are convinced he’s on a 2-year deal, which runs counter to David Ornstein’s info, but would make a lot of sense considering we have a contracts man as dastardly as Huss Fahmy overseeing things. That technically makes it cheaper to keep him, but if he misses top 4, the math doesn’t look sexy.
The laughable part about the whole leak, which probably didn’t come from Raul or Edu, is the club don’t think sacking Emery will change things.
That my friends, has been the crux of my confusing point over the past few weeks. Emery is bad. Really bad. But binning him off isn’t the only solve. My bigger worry is that Edu has been here for quite a bit now and the feeling still remains that we’re in trouble regardless of what we do with the manager. That says we’ve not moved the needle on infrastructure, because well-run clubs can survive an Emery (look at Leicester).
What happened to Raul’s beautiful vision he shared this summer? Perhaps we gave too much of it over to bad decision makers. If the head of the fish is rotten, you know the rest. To still be at the start of a transition 18 months after Arsene Wenger left is quite something, especially when you consider the football upgrade was well underway before he was binned.
I’m not down with the doom and gloom though. I know that there are lots of problems at the club and they go beyond the man in the dugout. But a lot can be done with a galvanising figure running the show.
Firstly, a better communicator can sooth the fans and give them a realistic overview of what’s going on. The next manager has to be a statement about the next 3 years, not a hopeful gamble on the next 5 months.
Secondly, a better coach with clearer intentions will help the team immeasurably. Do we have the perfect squad? No. Has anyone ever stated that we do? No. Coaching goes an awful long way in football, and it’s clear we’ve not been getting our share of it. Whatever you think about our expensively assembled squad, the reality is it finished 2 points off 3rd last season, then we spent a fortune in the summer to upgrade it (and added some tasty young kids to the options list). We need a coach that can work with the talent he has and create an offering that is more than the sum of its parts. Nagelsmann did a brilliant job of that when he was at Hoffenheim. Potter built a mini Patriots when he was at Ostersunds, focusing heavily on rehabbing ‘finished’ players into a positive culture, massively out-batting his average. Marco Rose instilled his 11 principles into Salzburg and had them flying high in the Europa League and smashing an invincible season. Arsenal’s players look so bad at the moment because they have a drab manager that doesn’t know how to get the most out of them. We’re Leicester last season (and the season before that).
Thirdly, OUR biggest weakness, Granit Xhaka, is trying to exit the club. This is such a magical gift. So beautiful and pretty. If the club can kick into gear and find a replacement for him in January, it could restart our flagging season. We can target a mobile defensive-minded midfielder that wants to play with discipline. I know it’s a tough ask, but we managed to find a 25 goal a season striker 2 years ago with little problem and there might be clubs willing to sell after the first batch of teams exit the Champions League.
Arsenal is in a mess of its own making, but that should never be an excuse for inaction. Businesses make mistakes all the time, the key to fixing them is to generally own up to what you did, assess what the core issue was, then rectify it fast and hope no one notices. Throwing your hands up in the press and saying, ‘we’re fucked whatever we do’ is embarrassingly defeatist.
I think one of the biggest misses with Emery centres around his inability to create a culture. That problem stems from a lack of vision. If players don’t have anything to believe in, why would they adhere to a set of behaviours or actions that support the cause? That’s why we have a captain that still thinks his reaction to the fans was cool. That’s why we have players liking salty posts on Instagram. That’s why half efforts on the pitch aren’t nipped in the bud.
Find a manager that can focus the players around an exciting vision, then build a culture that supports it. How hard can it be to find a manager that can deliver on such a basic requirement of the job?
That’s why I’d support finding that manager in January. Get the grim December out of the way, put the feelers our for a manager with a vision and a plan, then when the tough games are done, see what they can do over the next 5 months. At worst, the groundwork for next season can be laid, at best, maybe the players make a run for top 4.

Oh 4th!
Haha clean sweep!
Good write-up.
I don’t believe Emery can smash all four of these so called easy games.
Don’t be surprised if and when we start to struggle against them.
” I think more and more folk are convinced he’s on a 2-year deal” The rumours seem to switch between a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd or a 3 year deal with a break period after 2. Very much 6 of one half a dozen of the other. I was under the impression that it was pretty standard practice now to put a clause into managerial contracts that limited a pay out. With that in mind I can’t see any reluctance to sack Emery being down to having to pay him off. Fuck knows what’s going… Read more »

I wouldn’t be surprised to see us draw a couple of them and losing to West Ham is a possibility that wouldn’t be a huge surprised either.
I think too much is being made about the off field activities, reality is, if we were performing on the pitch we would feel a lot better about the state of the club.
You only need to look at what Lampard is doing, in what was supposed to be a transition year for Chelsea to know we need to find a positive, charismatic manager to galvanise the players, club and fans.
Emery needs to go.
Unai
Agree – when things aren’t right on the pitch everyone then blows other issues out of proportion.
It’s critical that we get the next appointment right.
We were at the start of a transition since we left Highbury
Should have just stayed put

“Chelsea have got by with a 40,000 seaters stadium just fine”
That’s not quite true is it? They got by with a 40,000 stadium and a billionaire sugar daddy who threw hundreds of millions into the team. I’d also remind you that they were planning to redevelop Stamford Bridge until Abramovich was effectively booted out of the country.
Un, helps that Chelsea have benefitted from investment.
We would have really struggled at Highbury with the self sustaining model.
On that note, I’d still like our owner to put some money up to speed this current situation along but alas, it ain’t gonna happen.
Absolutely Unai .
And then only half fill it.?
Can you imagine the reaction of some on here if we’d stayed at Highbury and then the Spud’s had built a new stadium?
We’d be hearing how Levy’s a visionary yada yada and we’re going no where.

Drag some friends along and make some noise then.
Marc but look at what cost.
Buying 2/3 rate players to compete.
James
Look at how much money we’ve spent and wasted over the last few seasons.
There was a period of austerity but in recent years we’ve spent plenty to be doing a hell of a lot better than we are.

We are the Top of the league for waste.
Emery might well screw up some of the next four games, but this board will still find an excuse to keep him to the end of the season, and even beyond if Ornstein is right about 3 years.
Basically, they are willing to lose some of our best players to stick by a crap manager and for a few of them to save face ,if they keep emery until the summer or beyond.
Wonder who that leak was from, perhaps an old school board member passed off with Raul?
Before hosting Man City we have Soton, Norwich, and Brighton in the league. What exactly will it take for Emery to save his job? 9 points? 6? Because I can see us winning one, drawing one, and losing one. That’s 4 points which frankly is nowhere near good enough against these sides but knowing Arsenal and our board I guarantee you they’ll spin it around and make it look like a success, especially if we manage a couple of decent results in Europa League in between. I have a feeling that no matter how bad we perform in the next… Read more »

60,000 seats. We could buy anyone
What fucking bollocks. New tv revenue money, 2 x new sponsorship deals and they are telling us we have no money next summer
We did it all this year on a 4th rate gaffer from mid league Spain??
Yeah. That’s financially competing with anybody alright. Move over Madrid, hush your gums Manchester, wevegot a 60,000 seater stadium, filled with wankers and a shit manager.
Should have stayed at Highbury.
Oh and you think we didn’t sell out? To the emirates? To the Kroenkes? We fucking sold out all right. Only to the wrong sorts as hill wood said.
We had usmanov and that Nigerian billionaire guy desperate to get in on the act at arsenal but no no. We have morals. We will sell to an American billionaire. This guy’s business ethics are impeccable. This is what’s best for arsenal
Except we’ve gone from 1-6th and probably lower now since 04-05
if true our board wants to keep emery, then they’re quite likely are going to see a drop in investments from outside. nobody wants to be involved in a team that doesn’t win or plays boring football. they want to be associated with a culture of winning, seeing new supporters and old buying their arsenal branded products. if we continue with emery and this short-sighted board I can see our shirt sponsor being Bet365 in two seasons.

Do you think that Abramovich wouldn’t have spent almost a billion on players if we hadn’t of moved?
Of course moving affected our ability to compete but to claim that Chelsea wouldn’t have become a force is naïve.
“but had we not wasted £400m on the emirates we’d have had that to put into our team”
Well as that was borrowed money no we wouldn’t have. You can argue that the repayments could’ve been spent on players but not the capital amount.
That’s like saying if I hadn’t have bought a house 5 years ago I would’ve had an extra £200,000 to spend.
We were already poor in the transfer market selling off our talent and replacing cheaper alternatives prior to the stadium move. Let’s not pretend that if we were still in Highbury we’d be keeping our best players competing for the best players and trophies cause it’s frankly baloney
Marc
Not claiming Chelsea wouldn’t have become a force but we would have been the place to be still only we’d spent our load then sold out to kroenke when we had actual billionaire fans waiting to put their cash in.
Look how close we got whilst selling our best with no money to complement the fantastic forward players
My point stands
I hate the emirates stadium and I miss Highbury
It was the worst move in Arsenal history
Worse than appointing emery.
UN Ofc at least some of the money spent on the stadium could have been spent on the squad. But I’m really not sure that wouldve kept us in the top bracket come 2014-15. By that time football had completely changed and passed Wenger by. It had become a business first sport second. Teams like City, Chelsea were constantly breaching FFP to buy their way to the top. On the other hand Wenger didnt even wanna spend clean money. He would sell world class players for half their values and then rely on Sanogos and whatnots. Honestly we shouldve hired… Read more »

Yes you’re right. But the at that time it was Kroenke who siezed the opportunity. And he’s probably made loads out of Arsenal already.
Emery will definitely convince the BoD to let him leave bcoz he won’t o anything of note. We don’t have world beaters all over the pitch but a good manager can get the best out of this team. Pardew and Allardyce wewe able to get the best from average to poor players.

I suggest the season ticket holders should send a message to Josh. If the club can’t get Champions League football next season, both Raul and Emery should be fired.
Marc won’t. He’d rather watch us crash and burn than make a stand
Personally if this had been done back around the time Stan was buying in we’d have been a lot better off by now.
We’d have usmanov
No stadium debt
Highly competitive team.
Huge support for wenger but if he wasn’t performing then I’m sure usmanov would have done what was required

This sounds very damn familiar of the last 10 years of Arsenal.

The club is clearly in a mess at the moment. There has been a lot of turmoil and changes many of which are frankly not for the better. What is clear to me is that the club’s owners need to be more “hands on” and there needs also to be a clearout and invigoration of the Board Room. Let’s not dwell on things but, as you well know, the first mistake was letting Wenger stay at the club well beyond his sell by date.

Coincidence?
It is now clear that the Arsenal job is too big for Emery. He is a coach for a mid_level team. He panics once the pressure is on. I want to see how he set up the team against “weaker” opponents. I am worry that a few players start down tooling.
“In the new role he is not at ease, but we respect the coach’s decisions, after that we’ll see what happens.” Not happy. Not at ease. Not good for us. As we know, Unai Emery likes a big man at the base of his midfield. That goes some way to explaining his continued use of Granit Xhaka, his preference of Stephen N’Zonzi over Torreira, his lust for Fabinho and so on.
