Don Raul: Architect of Emery disaster. What does round 2 bring?

by & filed under News Review.

I am so sorry that I broke the website. I needed to freshen up things and I made the Unai Emery of IT choices. Will be fixed today.

Don Raul has been at Arsenal for about two years now.

He has overseen the rebuild of Arsenal in the post-Wenger era.

I think it’s time to ask questions about the direction he’s taking Arsenal.

Unai Emery was his decision. The Basqueman was brought in through the back door after Ivan Gazidis lost his nerve during the recruitment process. We interviewed Unai on the 10th of May and hired him on the 18th. The interview process started on April 25th, the club knew they were firing Wenger in January. Raul, without doubt, had to act as the translator in the interview. Ivan doesn’t speak Spanish, nor does Ivan Gazidis. Together, they all agreed that they were inspired by Unai Emery.

Ivan specifically noted that no one during the process pulled out. Allegri and Rangnick were on that list. We ignored Conte, Rodger and Jardim.

Absorb how hilarious the criteria list now looks:

“We had some clear criteria that we were looking for in our selection, the first was progressive, entertaining football, a personality that fits with Arsenal’s values and also a record of developing players, in particular, young players through detailed, tactical instruction and also through cultural demands, pushing players and demanding more from them.

“Obviously all football clubs have an ongoing review process, but we looked through and analysed on the basis that every coach in the world would be interested in this position. We don’t believe there is a position in world football that is more attractive than Arsenal Football Club and having gone through that process and series of references, and a good deal of analysis, we created a long-list, an eight-person list.

The list of Emery traits is even more perplexing.

“He came in extraordinarily well-prepared, with a detailed knowledge of Arsenal Football Club. He had an analysis to share with us, not just of his ways of working and of his ways of coaching, and the team of people he works with, but he had an analysis of all of our individual players, their qualities and how he feels he can help them develop individually and collectively – in detail. Also an in-depth knowledge of our off-the-field team, and how they can contribute and how Unai’s team would mesh with them productively.

I’ve not seen much of the above come through during his tenure and we’re over 15 months in. I am going to be honest here, I’m not sure the PowerPoint Emery came in with was the visionary document our leadership team would have you believe.

Did it involve binning off Ramsey? Alienating Mesut Ozil? Playing a brand of football that has the stadium as empty as it was for the dark days of Wenger FOR A SATURDAY 3PM GAME? Did it involve Xhaka as the central figure in our midfield… etc etc.

Ivan spun us a yarn about a detailed search and select process when in reality, we made a desperate panic purchase. Even basic due diligence would have uncovered the consistent passing up of leads, a bad record with big egos, difficulty learning new languages, an inability to build defences, and a reputation for desperately negative football.

Raul must be suffering buyers remorse. He bought a Robin Reliant on Ebay after 10 beers and he’s trying to convince car experts it’s a Porsche 911.

Emery put the kids out against a very average Vitoria side yesterday and flunked the tie. Europa League football was his comfort blanket, a weekly moment we could all rely on to forget the demise of our great club, but not yesterday. We managed 1 shot on target. We conceded 15 attempts, Vitoria had 4 on target. We took our 4th lead in 4 games and gave it up.

This is not a player issue, this is a coaching standards problem. Emery actually thought the defending was good.

Watching our manager in the rain hiding under his hood reminded me of Steve McClaren with the brolly when he was the England manager. He’s beaten. I’m not sure he knows how to fix a squad that doesn’t want to respond to ideas.

It’s clear this isn’t a long term solution, but the big fear is what comes next.

Raul thought Unai Emery was a protagonist that painted beautiful football. How can we trust him with the next step, which is basically another rebuild?

He’s been with the club for 2 years now and he’s dining out with Jose Mourinho during a crisis. The rumour was denied, but that story came from The Times and was penned by a proper journalist. How can our Football CEO be so irresponsible? How can you look at Jose’s deeply noxious relationship with the club and be captivated? How can you look at the way he has crashed every club he goes to and want some of that for The Arsenal? Beggars belief… but look, this is a man that was inspired by Unai Emery.

Worse still, how can you think our owners are going to want him in our dugout? Not because Stan K cares, more because of what Jose represents to their day to day. Ivan and Arsene were given the keys to Arsenal for so many years because they understood the Kroenke’s wanted the easy life. They owners have real estate DNA. They want tenants with fat kids and boring lives. They don’t want teenagers that are causing havoc at all hours. Jose Mourinho is a noisy tenant. He’s a bad egg to start with, so the press whirlwind is going to cause them anxiety. He isn’t at the cutting edge of coaching, so the only way he can win these days is by writing cheques. He’s a wrecking ball to a carefully built club infrastructure, so he’ll be expensive to move on. His football will have the fans miserable once the ‘Special One’ sauce rubs off after 3 months.

Do you think that is the sort of manager the Kroeke’s are going to indulge?

In LA, KSE are giving chances to young coaches that are innovative and entertaining. Are they really going to sign off on the most prolific arsonist in football management?

I hope not.

That said, I’m not sure there’s a plan in the works to replace Emery.

If it’s not Jose Mourinho, it’ll have to be Freddie Ljungberg. I love the guy, but I think we could be welcoming another problem. He’s a lovable risk, but his coaching credentials are working under Unai Emery and getting relegated with Joncker in Germany. I could be totally wrong, I hope I am, but I don’t think we’re hiring our way out of this mess if we move Emery on this weekend.

Oddly, we’re almost in a position where it’s more dangerous to sack Emery.

We should be making a well thought out decision right now, one for the future, one that is backed by detailed and insightful recommendations, not moving hard on a has-been or a coach very early in his career that has already relegated a team.

Bayern Munich fired Kovac and they were linked heavily with Arsene Wenger yesterday. Rapha H, the defacto go-to on all things Bayern says he’s not on the shortlist. Point is, it’s slim pickings. Worth noting, Ralph Rangnick wouldn’t even entertain a phone call with them. That’s how tough the job market is. I also don’t think we’ll move for Allegri, he has a big financial appetite and I suspect the club passed on him for a very specific reason last time. Maybe dry football and issues with language were the sticking point? Ironic if that were the case.

We are in a disastrous position now. Big trouble awaits. We didn’t move on Emery this summer despite it being absolutely clear he was not going to drive us forward. I can have some sympathy for Edu, he’s new to Arsenal, but Raul? A few shiny transfers that have so far tanked will not gloss over his choice of Unai Emery. That’s on him. Rectifying it with Jose Mourinho will further prove out my fear that he’s not the full package we hoped for.

The mutterings I hear about current situation are not positive. Take that how you will, but I have sailed pretty close to the truth on the big narratives, I consistently hear from people close to the action that the new setup is not right.

Raul can hide behind Ivan G, but he was the football guy. He can push Edu into the mix, but he’s new. He owns the mess. He owns the PR debacle of Xhaka and Mesut Ozil. He was responsible for the Mourinho dinner.

It’s time to clean up and start delivering on fixing the mess. It’s time to craft a plan. It’s time to prove that he truly is a Don, because as it stands, he’s looking more and more like a used car salesman trying his hand at running a space agency.

Let’s see what happens next, but beware the tonic of change, it might have a nasty aftertaste.

What we are seeing now at Arsenal is proof of how difficult it is to get things right at a football club.

The know nothing’s continually abused Wenger for not winning the league as they believed they are the entitled ones, in that it is their God given right to see Arsenal win trophies every year.

The few of us on Le Grove who defended Wenger’s good name took copious amount of stick as we understood the difficulties of being a successful football club, especially without the financial muscle to compete and having to pay off the stadium debt.

The know nothing’s need to have a good look at themselves and realise how ignorant they were for being so harsh on Arsenal’s most successful manager.

They believed that playing open , attractive and successful football was a given but the reality is now sinking in that despite Arsenal having hired people like Raul ,Edu etc, and having a couple of hundred million to spend , the football is so bad that it is becoming embarrassing.

As much as wenger loves the club ,I’m sure he is affording himself a wry smile as he sees Emery flounder .

Emery’s treatment of Mesut Ozil is being made to look more and more clueless with every passing day ,and yes , I will afford myself a wry smile at Emery’s demise .

He is getting what he deserved and maybe the “entitled ones” are getting what they deserve after the abuse aimed at Wenger and Ozil …2 people I have respected throughout the years as they ooze class , unlike our present manager.

    Ah posted too fast!!

Last night was dire beyond dire.

I managed to miss the first half as I somehow forgot we were kicking off this early. When I checked Arseblog’s live feed, I wasn’t surprised to see 0-0.

Arrived at the pub close to home just before the end of the 1st half still 0-0. I awaited the half-time highlights “eagerly”. And was not surprised to see that Vitoria had 4 clear cut chances to score and then BT Sports showed zilch from Arsenal. I knew then that I hadn’t missed a single thing.

The watched that second half in total disbelief. It was turgid and effectively boring. When we finally scored I wasn’t surprised to hear that it was our first shot on target.

But as the game neared the end I was certain that Vitoria would score and so they did.

To be honest if they were a far better team who knows how to take their chances we would have lost 5-1 to them easily.

  3. HighburyLegend

LOL what a big mess on Le Grove yesterday!!

In other news, Unai isn’t even able to deliver in the ELC anymore, absolutely hilarious!!

  4. HighburyLegend

Please Leicester, you know what to do.
If Vardy can’t score a treble with our shitty defenders, than shame on him!! lol

“Raul must be suffering buyers remorse. He bought a Robin Reliant on Ebay after 10 beers and he’s trying to convince car experts it’s a Porsche 911”
    classic line that needs repeating….

  6. Rainman

Lol, I actually got the Trophy.

Lol, Pierre missing the point as per the usual.

We all loved Wenger and understood he did a pretty awesome job for a good long while. However it all went to shit, and then he refused to call it a day in timely fashion and THAT was when fans turned on him, not before.

Now that it has turned to shit under Emery too fans are turning on him too.
So Wenger got exactly what he deserved, as will Emery.

The stupid thing with you lot though is how you defended Wenger even at his shittiest, but with Emery you have been very quick to turn on him, which exposes you as arsene cult members.

  7. guest man aka WW

    Once again.
Thank god mr magoo wenger is nowhere near this club, Emeery is more palatable, we can get rid a lot quicker. No hanging about with the arrogant idea he built this club.
    Bayern Munich and wenger?
Is that due to the 10-2 hammering/
That they feel sorry for him…….

  8. Danny

El-Dicko came for a draw and got it, the weather of course didn’t help, but in the bigger realm of the universe, Pedro, not being able to post on Le Grove was like being back in the dark ages!
Leicester stuffs us say 3 – 4 nil, we’ll be 9 points behind them, then it must be over for him.

  9. David Smith

This club haven’t got the bottle to lose emery this weekend, whatever happens
And doubt if Josh will be in a hurry to lose Raul either
A real shame Ivan was what he is, he could have overseen something decent , or maybe not as the case may be

Player poverty isn’t the issue that you present, I addressed this yesterday too. Where it’s arguable we have squad holes relative to the top 4 battlers and beyond, we absolutely don’t have player poverty when dealing with the remainder of the league.

Teams like Wolves, Leicester, Palace, Everton…..Brighton. All where “player poverty” has been cited as our reason (not “part of”) for failing to perform/win in the last year by yourself.

In short, spare us all you dimwit. The reason we didn’t make top 4 last season was Emery, the reason we’re dogshit this season is Emery.

When a competent manager comes in and gets us playing we can then see the shortfall of the squad relative to the other top-enders.

“This is not a player issue, this is a coaching standards problem. Emery actually thought the defending was good.” – Pedro, circa 20 mins ago

  11. Davey

Europa blindness why play certain players last night, Tierney for example why? It is a shit little league in a shit little cup that we have virtually qualified anyway from 3 wins. Leicester must be licking their lips in anticipation.

  12. TitsMcGee

Part of me actually wants to see Mourinho, at least in the interim. He’s a purveyor of boring football but his teams are usually very organised and I’d love to see how this squad plays with someone who knows what organisation really looks like.

Anyone we hire mid-season will be a stop-gap anyway.

Chelsea been winning games with Jorginho, Kovacic and Mount in the midfield. How much better is it compared to Torreira, Guendouzi, Ceballos or even to Xhaka, Torreira, Ceballos? Not by a lot. Yet Lampard has managed to dominate games with his midfield, and Emery has managed to not dominate a single game in 11 EPL rounds. How do you not dominate a single game in 11?! We have not won by more than a goal. Not once. Horrific.

  15. Wengaball

    It’s not just Emery.
    Raul won’t work as well.

Here’s my prediction – Raul will go, and Wenger will return to Arsenal within the next two years. Not as manager, but as Raul’s replacement.

Arsenal’s soul as a football club will only then be restored. Till then, it is going to be what it is.

  16. Wengaball

The one thing Wenger will have to adjust is that part of his ‘values’ that values loyalty over ability.

That was his biggest failing as a manager. You don’t have to be ruthless, but you can’t afford to be impractical. There is always a midway that allows you to replace people who need replacing.

  17. Ash

A few assumptions here, firstly that Raul translated. If I was having that meeting I would hire a translator for him if it was needed, so its not a sure thing he translated for him.

Equally, Raul was one of 3 people on the decision making board, and the only 1 remaining at the club. I dont think we can lay all the blame for this appointment at his door.

Finally, it almost paid off because we should have finished in the top 4 last season and got to the EL final. I know it didnt, but hardly Raul’s fault that it fell apart.

I am all for replacing Emery and if it was up to me it would have happened already. That said, if we make the right appointment in 2 weeks time I dont think anyone is going to be sad that it took two weeks to get that person. If in a months time we are still plodding along with Emery, I think we can justifiably lose our shit.

  18. Emiratesstroller

    Pedro

I think that this is one of your best posts.

We have been sold a “pup” as a head coach and quite clearly Raul was instrumental in that choice.

However, I would not be too critical of our Summer transfers. Yes Pepe has
been so far a disappointment, but we should not be too hasty in our judgment
    of him.

We bought Tierney, Saliba and Martinelli and I think that they will prove
good value. Luiz is a stop gap costing £8 million.

Significantly we offloaded this summer a lot of dross. The only player who
might have been worth keeping was Ramsey.

We have the “youngest” squad in EPL with average age under 26 and it is blindingly clear that the team is lacking real direction and communication from bench and leadership on the pitch.

Both need to be resolved as quickly as possible. A major concern also is that
Emery has not handled well the situation with Mustafi, Xhaka and Ozil. This
limits our experience in the team and particularly in midfield where we are
    clearly struggling.

At the moment the club is not competitive and unstable. The defence needs
to be stabilised. We will need to buy an additional Centre Back. There are
options in the market place as you suggest, but it will not come cheap and
whoever we recruit needs to be compatible with Saliba assuming that he joins us in summer.

Midfield is now a major problem. Torreira’s role in team is unclear and I don’t
believe that you can play both Guendouzi and Ceballos at the same time.
Willock is not ready for a starting eleven place in EPL.

We need to recruit a quality midfield player who can put his foot on the ball
and control game. None of the players in our squad apart from Ozil has that
potential and that is clearly a major weakness as was demonstrated yesterday.

The club has several talented forwards but the fact that they are making so
little impact in games raises serious questions about the way that the team is
playing at moment. We seem always to be playing on backfoot with far too
slow a build up and our football has become too predictable and EASY TO
    READ.

  19. guest man aka WW

please don’t keep mentioning wenger…my councellor told me to avoid thinking about him….im in danger of a depression meltdown relapse.

  20. TheLegendaryDB10

    Pierre

You are pathetic. You are the reason why we are in this mess. You and your lot just stuck your heads in the sand and sat on your hands hoping that every year he would turn it around.

He got more and more selfish, refused to have anyone do a good job around him (eg Keown, why did he not want to persist with him if he was not interested in dealing with defending? Because refused to have anyone step into his limelight) and just surrounded himself with yes men who did nothing to learn or improve their knowledge of the game (in fact his staff should have been sacked… look at Fergie, he changed his backroom staff 3 times in his tenure).

The blame can also be laid on Gazidis’s feet (who did zilch and just sat back and cashed in his paycheck) and Kroenke who is an absentee owner who has bought the club for the wrong reasons. He believes it jsu an investment and just wants top 4 to keep the clubs prestige and value soaring. The rest doesn’t even bother him in the slightest.

So please spare me your criticisms and your self-righteousness as you have no leg to stand on.

  21. siddharth14

    Pierre

Get off your ozil and wenger bandwagon. The know nothings expecting Arsenal to win trophies every year is fairy tale stuff. Your beloved Wenger oversaw a steady decline in the first part of his last 8 years which accelerated alarmingly towards the end.

The questions and criticisms leveled at Arsene were perfectly valid on many counts. For one, our record against the top four sides was atrocious to say in the least during Wenger’s regime. Our amateurish play and getting schooled in Europe is the stuff of legends. Have you seen the Champion’s league draw live at any time when Arsenal used to be present in that competition ? You really should watch a few, especially when we were drawn against Bayern Munich. The smirk on the faces of Beckenbauer and Rumminege is something which a true Arsenal fan will find hard to forget. Drawing Arsenal in knockout stages was considered to be a jackpot for the other teams.

All Arsenal fans were asking for is to compete and show fight in the league and Europe. Something which was chiselled off under the expert tutelage of Wenger. And of course, how can we forget the famous Suarez and Alonso circus. If wenger had swallowed even a fraction of his pride, Arsenal would have remained competitive and might have also gone on to win a title maybe.

What you don’t get about Wenger is that many times during his regime, we were close to being competitive or winning if only Wenger had gone and done the sensible thing and not get his ego get in the way.

As for Emery, he is another bad chapter in our book and sooner we move on the better.

    ES,
Quick tip that you might or might not think about.

Your posts would literally take half the space if you weren’t formatting in that weird way moving to a new line of text before it’s time to do it. Just don’t press ENTER at all unless you want to press it twice and start a new paragraph.

Unless you WANT your posts to take as much space so our trigger fingers get stenosing tenosynovitis. In that case – fu. Have a good day.

Don’t let it happen again Pedro.

    EMERY OUT!

  24. TT

Wenger was abused for doing the same mistakes year in year out in his last 10 years Pierre, not because he did not win the league.

  25. Batistuta

No excuse whatsoever to continue with Emery by the way, he’s done and should be shown the door immediately…He’s not getting us top 4 so what exactly are we afraid will happen if we let him go?

Again at this point it isn’t on Emery anymore, it’s now all on Raul and co for continuing to let the club flounder under the Spaniard.

Also, don’t know about the whole long term thing to be honest, we just need to take it a step at a time, buy smartly, sell the dross and get a competent manager, shouldn’t be too difficult to achieve within a 2/3 Yr period. Arsenal do not need a new “project”, we just need to act smarter in the market and with appointments at all levels of the club.

  26. Pierre

    Batistuta
Sometimes you all need reminding that some of us said
“Be careful what you wish for”

Will just add that no, I do not want Wenger back and it was time for him to go, a few years too late to be honest.

  27. terraloon

Oh how some on here laughed at Chelsea.

Hazard , their top scorer out the door. Ha Ha

    Transfer ban. Ha Ha

Appointing a novice in Lampard.Ha Ha

No one to score goals. Ha Ha

Abramovich denied a visa. Giggle Giggle.

Meanwhile at Arsenal some claimed a top transfer window. Fourth position or above a walk in the park. Champions League here we come.

All bar the the shouting the season is a third done and the stark reality is that Arsenal as a club are in a mess.

Players openly showing dissent and content for the supporters and manager, crowd numbers starting to dwindle no improvement away from home and potentially home games being being targeted by the opposition as a far more than just a free hit.

Far from clubs without hope or indeed a plan Chelsea and Leicester seem to be clubs who have been planning for this moment.

Whereas at Arsenal I cant see a plan all I see is confusion, contempt and panic.

Make no bones about it unless something changes and changes fast then EL qualification will become a luxury as opposed to the bare minimum of requirements.

These are worrying times to be an Arsenal supporter

  28. Champagne Charlie

    Bati

Yea, tend to agree with your sentiments about a long term manager. That’s idealistic but not totally necessary for right now imo.

Would’ve been THE thing to do when we hit the club with a blank slate after Wenger, there was patience for a project to develop and grow etc. But I think after floundering for 18 months it’s a hard sell to push us further out to sea in the hope we’ve invested in the light of tomorrow.

I’d recalibrate with a trusted pair of hands personally and look at the next hire to be more visionary kind of stuff. Gimme 2 years of a genuine conciliatory figure who can level us out a bit and then go from there.

Some really fundamental aspects as a team I think we need to build a love for all over again, defending being a huge one, but also being hard to beat, tenacious, passionate, refusing to give up etc. Stuff we’ve lost touch with in recent seasons.

  29. TitsMcGee

These are worrying times to be an Arsenal supporter”

These times were always on the cards. AFC has been a country club for the better part of the last 15 years(not coincidentally when SPURS and LFC were out in the wilderness). They aren’t anymore and now we are out in the wilderness.

Spent too many years treading water and being told “4th place is a trophy” while our rivals made plans. Now we are reaping what we sowed.

You plant shiite in the ground you get shiite fruits.

  30. Monday

Emery was never Raul’s choice. Check your facts right. It was Gazidis that was in charge then, so don’t blame Raul. The main point is Emery isn’t a good coach but rather a confused one. A coach with such talents and probably the 3rd best front attacking line up and arsenal can’t even score up to 4 goals in a match. Then what is he coaching then.

  31. Pierre

I’ve always said the manager is the most important person at a football club and Emery, Rodgers and Lampard are proving the point.

If Emery had gone to Leicester and Rodgers came to Arsenal , would anyone truly believe that Leicester would be flying under Emery and Arsenal floundering under Rodgers .

  32. Ishola70

Fans terming the result last night “shocking”

It’s hardly shocking when Vitoria would have ended up drawing or winning at The Emirates the other week if it wasn’t for the intervention of one solitary player scoring two late goals.

It’s hardly shocking when you consider the overall form the team is in and it’s hardly shocking that Arsenal concede yet again in a football match.

Besides all that last night’s match as well as having some of the youngsters in was a dead rubber match. Arsenal were qualified for the next round of Europa before last night’s match.

The doubting of Raul now is quite funny considering he was put up as a hero at the end of the last transfer window. Starve the peasants for prolonged periods then give them one square meal and you become a hero. I was hearing that he played a “blinder” in the summer transfer window. Completely ignoring trying to upgrade midfield and bringing in an old Chelsea reject on the cheap who isn’t very good defensively is hardly playing a blinder.

Again Aaron Ramsey did what was best for Aaron Ramsey. He got a deal at Juventus that he wasn’t going to get at Arsenal and now he is part of a club in Italy who win domestic titles and are seen as serious on the biggest european stage. That to me looks like a win-win for Ramsey. If Ramsey was disposed of at Arsenal as is implied on here he must be the luckiest man alive to find himself in his current situation with such a disposal.

lol the site going down yesterday coincided with Marko’s dramatic return to the site. He jinxed it.

  33. JDavey

Hope we get spanked Saturday and he fucks off, not and never will be a top level manager.

Go with arteta, he will develop a good brand of football, he knows the club and speaks multiple languages. Or give Freddie it till the summer if Ten Hag is available then.

  34. terraloon

“Chelsea been winning games with Jorginho, Kovacic and Mount in the midfield. How much better is it compared to Torreira, Guendouzi, Ceballos or even to Xhaka, Torreira, Ceballos? Not by a lot. ”

Sorry but a midfield of Torreira, Guendozi & Ceballos is miles away from the Chelsea midfield you mention in addition they who have Kante and LOFTUS-CHEEK both who are now available add to that they have Berkeley out injured
Guendozi runs around a lot , kicks opposition players, overplays and rarely scores. He truly flatters to deceive
Ceballos is without doubt technically gifted but struggles to show his skills in the PL. in other words he should not be bought in a permanent deal even if he became available
Torreira is a player who is without doubt a decent player but would he get near any of the top fours midfield?

As for Xhaka well enough has been said already about his issues both on and off the pitch

Sorry but. I think you are falling in the trap of vastly overeating players at the club and underrating the qualities elsewhere.

  35. PieAFC

As far as I’m concerned the attendance is speaking for itself. Lack of people showing up to watch the boring football.

Journos, pundits, ex players. All the noise coming around the media, circulates now dull we are and nothing’s changed.

The club cannot be ignoring this. Id like to think edu and Raul are in disagreement what to do it how to react. Edu Sanctioned the changes at youth level. – IMO I believe that’s a warning shot to the rest of the club – and emery. No-one is safe from this mediocrity that set in. Steve Morrow was there for years!

I believe he’ll get the sack, once we know we’re we are by January. So a new coach could potentially change things with a window selling and maybe bringing someone in.

You thought they were all kidding you
    You used to laugh about

Now you don’t talk so loud
Now you don’t seem so proud
About having to be scrounging your next meal
How does it feel, how does it feel?

You two were right on the mo eh with the Spanish mafia narrative. You boys called it. The laziness, the ineptitude, the boys club. I was against emery as a coach from the start but I hadn’t yet formed an opinion of Raul.

To be fair he pulled some decent signings this summer and shipped off some unwanted players
I think it’s a bit harsh if Pedro to write off pepe, tierney and Martinelli as they are all young and adapting
Each and every one of them have shown glimpses of greatness already and under an attacking coach they can still be arsenal legends. All 3

Luiz and Ceballos are shite though. As I said in the summer. Nobody, not Pedro not Cc nobody could convince me Luiz was anything g other than a last minute barrel scrape and Ceballos (as I said all along) is just arteta lite. Failed at Madrid, failing at Arsenal, he’ll head to whatever mid league Spanish club emery ends up at next
I’ll put my house on it.

    Pedro

You didn’t mention an obvious choice. Arteta. I know it’s been done to death but there’s no reason we can’t move for him and Rodgers. Throw all the money you can and get him in. Even if he’s only here for 2-3 years he will leave us in great shape ready for our klopp to come in and enhance the good work he started

Those two for me are too choice along with allegri.

    Don’t be shy.

  44. Ishola70

Yeah Guendouzi is a huge problem not.

The huge problem for the midfield is that they don’t have one not one solitary midfielder in the whole squad and first team that is seen as top grade. Not one.

And Raul played a “blinder” in the summer transfer window didn’t he in overseeing this sort of overall midfield.

  51. Ashwin Gunner

    @Highbury

Wenger’s issue was his transfer strategy. His football and his coaching was not an issue. Now that We have Edu, Vinnai and Raul taking care of transfers, Wenger needs to concentrate only on winning matches. And with our current squad he can do wonders with his style of football.

  52. raptora

    Yup,
    What terraloon said.

We had a great transfer window. We got a fantastic LB in Tierney, sublime goal scoring winger in Pepe, a better CB than Koscielny in Luiz, a highly rated midfielder from Real Madrid in Ceballos and a young star forward in Martinelli.

Chelsea finished a total of 2 big points ahead of us last season, lost the best player in the EPL for basically each of his 6-7 years in the EPL, and were transfer banned.

Leicester sold their most expensive player and finished 18 points behind us last season.

Yet we are told both teams have better players than us. And it’s normal that we don’t play as good as them since we have weaknesses in our squad.

Mind you the biggest difference between them and us is that they have managers that know how they see the game, they tell their players what to do, the players follow their orders, and they win games.

We don’t have that manager. We have someone who doesn’t have a game plan. He sets up every game differently.

11 games we haven’t had the same midfield trio paired in 2 consecutive games.
11 games we haven’t dominated a game. Not once.
11 games we haven’t won by more than 1 goal.

We have won 2 games in our last 9.

1-0 vs Bournemouth where we had a total of 1 shot on target which was the goal of Luiz with Pepe assisting from a corner kick.
And a late comeback 3-2 win vs Aston Villa where we actually played better with 10 players than we did with 11. Villa were shredding us to pieces in the 1st half.

In that spree we’ve lost points to Spuds when they were leading by 0-2 and we managed to get the draw for a 2-2.
To Watford where we were leading by 0-2 but we had a 2nd half collapse that still makes me wonder how we didn’t lose the game and got a 2-2 draw.
To Manure where we were the 2nd best team vs the worst Manure team in the EPL history. We stole a 1-1 draw with a goal they literally gifted to us.
To a new promoted Sheffield United team that had an obvious game plan on how to deal with us and it worked great because we never looked like scoring and they were dangerous on many occasions. Were they expected to have a better midfield as well? Lost by 1-0.
To Crystal Palace where we were again leading by 2-0 but again we conceded our lead and finished 2-2. Both of our goals were scored after corner kicks taken by Pepe.
And finally to a Wolverhampton team where after each of our last 3 goals was scored after a corner kick taken by Pepe, Pepe was benched. We were also the second best team although we could have won if it wasn’t for the corrupted FA and VAR. We finished 1-1.

That’s 9 games where we were never in control. We were either behind in score so we had to commit a massive effort to get a point, or we were ahead but couldn’t do enough to win the football game and we allowed the opposition to come back and get points.

It’s a coin toss with Emery. You don’t know where you’ll end up. There’s no stability, no balance, no long term game plan.

Emery is a coin flip manager.

  53. Ishola70

    Pierre
”Isn’t Ceballos a Spanish international and willock an England under 21 international.”

We have the players to play better than this crap but they need to start taking responsibility, play with a bit more urgency and belief. Emery is not going to criticize them in public ever because that’s not just his thing but many in that squad are hiding under the “Emery is shit” band wagon to get away with murder.

There were a few times Ronaldo could have put Ramsey in on goal but , of course Ronaldo ignored him , Ramsey looked suitably frustrated.

Maybe Ramsey could do with someone a little more unselfish to pick him out, as a certain German used to.

Oh for the days of cazorla, wilshere, ramsey and Ozil eh….

We all had our moans about players but they sure knew how to link up together.

As you suspected, I like you never trusted Raul. He’s no a football guy. Being at Barcelona doesn’t always promise magic on the pitch. Even at Camp Nou, I don’t think Raul was tasked with the duties on-pitch. He was just more of the figures guy. So let him remain there and give up that duty to a suitable person which in my opinion is not yet at the club.

Otherwise, I think his position can be dispensed with also that we can hire I someone with on-pitch related expertise. Again, we can only get this done if the fans close to the Emirates can get this message to the Kroenkes.

  59. raptora

    Terraloon,

So Jorginho + Kovacic is miles better than Torreira + Guendouzi or Xhaka + Guendouzi?

Because let’s say that Mount is as good as Ceballos or Willock.

How is Jorginho and Kovacic a great CM pair?! Cause I don’t see it. Yet they’ve been winning games and are branded a much better CM than ours. Is it because Lampard actually knows how to set his team up and Emery doesn’t?

You’d ask a 100 ppl and they’ll tell you how Jorginho lacks mobility, Kovacic is only good at recycling the ball. None of them is good defensively or physically strong. Yet they win games so they must be great.

But our midfield is branded much worse than our opponents. Versus Sheffield United? Vs Watford? Bournemouth? Palace? Wolves?

It couldn’t be on the manager?

Chelsea are defensively vulnerable because they have a dodgy central defence and not a strong defensive midfield but unlike Arsenal they can add Kante to that dodgy defensive midfield.

Chelsea are getting better results than Arsenal not because they have a great overall CM that is good both defensively and offensively.

They are getting better results than Arsenal because they haven’t just one but two AMs in Mount and Pulisic that can score goals for them. Meanwhile Arsenal don’t have one AM that looks prolific. Not one.

Chelsea are conceding lots of goals. They are getting away with that because of their offense.

That combination – Ozil and Ramsey – was often over-looked.Preferred it to the overhyped Sanchez-Ozil one which was flat-track and home-centric.

Ramsey enjoyed Ozil’s vision and Ozil enjoyed having someone taking responsibility higher up the pitch so he could float deep and take it easy.

Ozil isn’t a Bergkamp who could aggressively pick out a number nine runs in short sharp bursts. He was more languid and laid-back, and more suited to picking out third man runners who made late runs.

I agree, We did lose big games, by very big margins. But look at the players who played those games. The quality of our players were real bad.

We have to look at the positives as well. We beat Barca on their prime. Klopp has beat Wenger only once!!!. I again state, issue with Wenger was more on the players he used to buy rather than coaching. Yes, he was weak defensively, he used to give silly excuses, but that was when he was helpless with his players and didn;t want to throw them under the bus.

Give him the reigns to coach the team and nothing more. With the current set of players he can do wonders.

Why hasn’t any other top football club brought him in to coach a good group if he can indeed do “wonders” , he isn’t on Bayern’s shortlist as Pedro wrote so why is he being overlooked if he is still a super coach waiting to do wonders?

As supporters Arsenal fans are too clingy and reminisce about the past a lot, once something new doesn’t work we are crying out again for the comforts of the past. There was not comfort in the past hence why we are a joke in football and remain a joke.

    Ishola,
And we have Auba, Lacazette, Pepe, Ozil, Martinelli.

Pulisic has 19 goals in 127 games for Dortmund. That’s 3 less than what Pepe scored in 1 season.
Mount has 9 goals in 38 games in Derby County. Martinelli has 7 goals in 9 apps for Arsenal.
It’s not even a contest to compare Aubameyang and Lacazette to Abraham and Batshuayi.

We are a shower of shit going forward, we are shit itself in defence.

The biggest difference than any player in the world can make is the manager. It’s manager difference.

I’m not even championing Lampard right now. But imagine a rookie manager in his 2nd year in the job understandably won zilch so far, doing a much better job than someone who’s been a head coach/manager for 15 years and has won 10 trophies. One looks like he knows what he’s doing. While the other one looks clueless. Like we’ve put a random person from the crowd in charge of our team and decided to give him 6 mil annual for that.

There is no real prefence that stands out Chika that is the problem. Any current combination is questionable.

Arsenal need to find a DM worthy of the name and also if not a goalscoring midfielder at least a midfielder who has more creativity in the last third and that being an up and coming player and one that is reliable and can be called on every week.

It doesn’t matter what Mount or Pulisic did previously.

It matters what they look to be doing this season and both of them or at least one every match looks like he is capable of hitting the net for them. An eye for goal and making those runs into the penalty area.

Name me one player in the whole Arsenal squad who is comparable.

I get and know that Emery isn’t good enough. I want him gone. But it has to be said there are areas that are lacking on the playing side as well.

  84. Champagne Charlie

    In a nutshell

Play him deeper and with the risks he takes on the ball we will concede shots at twice the rate we are doing now, although to his credit he does a lot of work off the ball as well, much more than Guendouzi and Xhaka or even the allegedly defensively minded Torriera

It’s not Pep or Klopp then Wenger, never has been, never will be.

And this part about knowing the club some keep stating like it’s a good thing, its not. Pep and Klopp didn’t know their clubs, they have done well haven’t they? Someone said throw in Freddie because he has been educated in the Arsenal way.

He is playing at a higher level atm thats for sure, but I doubt if anyone would have said that mount was a level above Ceballos before the season started, in fact many, including myself , probably thought that mount would not be a regular starter.

This is where the quality of the manager comes in and Lampard is already showing that he can get the very best out of players like mount, abrahams, kovacic and jorginho…sadly Emery is doing the opposite.

  93. Guns of Hackney

dont get me wrong. change was definitely needed to break the grip Wenger had on the club which was one of the reasons for our decline. I am game for any manager (non controversial) who can bring glory back to Arsenal. As long as we can agree that Emery needs to be shown the door ASAP and replace him with some one who can do something good for the club.

“I’ve no interest in being a club scout on here.”

Yet you’ve recommended a host of names over time. What a dunce!

I don’t think it was you that was beating the drums for a certain Pulgar recently after the last Copa America. Fucking ITK wannabe.

“While it’s arguable we have squad holes relative to the top 4 battlers and beyond, we absolutely don’t have player poverty when dealing with the remainder of the league — teams like Wolves, Leicester, Palace, Everton, Brighton.”

Wrong and false, in a number of ways. One, our weaknesses in central midfield and in central defense hurt us against every team in the PL, including teams you don’t seem to have much respect for, teams 6-12.

Two, our central midfield options and center back options are in many cases weaker than their counterparts in teams 6 – 12 when you consider all of the factors that make for a good PL player today, esp. quickness and athleticism.

“The reason we didn’t make top 4 last season was Emery.”

False. We had a weak squad last season — sixth best in the PL at best — and we finished where we did because Emery was forced to rely on inadequate players such as Xhaka, Mustafi, Maitland-Niles, Kolasinac, Mavropanos, Elneny and Jenkinson in key matches.

“the reason we’re dogshit this season is Emery”

Well, we certainly haven’t been all that great, but we also haven’t been “dogshit,” nor are we “dogshit”. We’re 5th in the PL and we’ve only lost two matches. No, we’re not tearing up trees, but we aren’t “dogshit”.

As I’ve said, Emery got things badly wrong last night and badly wrong against Wolves. He hasn’t gotten us playing fluid football in the PL, he hasn’t implemented a clear or consistent approach, he has gotten various things wrong and he continues to tinker instead of settling on a single formation. Indeed, as I’ve said, if he doesn’t revert to the 4-5-1 immediately and stick with it, the fans are going to begin to let him hear about it and he will be out of a job before December.

However, none of the above makes the kinds of things you say true. As I’ve highlighted above, much of what you continue to claim is wrong and false.

Finally, calling other posters “dimwit” doesn’t make you sound smart or clever, nor does it improve the points you’re making. All it serves to do is make you sound like the unfriendly and arrogant jerk — indeed bully — that I and others have long said you are.

  98. Receding Hairline

In hindsight i must now admit the powers that be made the wrong call.

They opted for a quick fire return to the champions league rather than a measured thought out long game approach. And it nearly worked but nearly never counts.

But i don’t believe we should push the panic button and start a procession of has been managers to salvage things, the next coach should be someone we believe can get us to a certain level long term.

  99. Paulinho

Can’t remember one good game we’ve played with Guendouzi. Last seasonXhaka-Torreira, Xhaka-Ramsey, Ramsey-Torrieira all had good games together.

Kovacic is soft defensively and can’t score or make an off the ball run but he is superb at receiving the ball high up the pitch, drawing players towards him, and driving forward with ball after evading pressure with trickery.

Guendouzi is like a big dopey Labrador playing fetch and carry in completely benign areas of the pitch.

Ishola: “It doesn’t matter what Mount or Pulisic did previously. It matters what they look to be doing this season and both of them or at least one every match looks like he is capable of hitting the net for them. An eye for goal and making those runs into the penalty area.Name me one player in the whole Arsenal squad who is comparable.”

Emery has so far managed to make the extremely high rated winger and scorer of 22 goals last season play like as bad as Maitland-Niles.

He still has no idea on how to field Auba and Laca so we look good when they’re playing together.

He has no idea what his best front 3 is.

He has no idea what his best midfield 3 is.

He has no idea what his best back 4 is.

He played with 3 CBs yesterday so maybe this is his new idea to fail at.

How can we expect any player to play well if the whole game plan and set up is one massive mess?

Do we have one player doing well this season? Just one? We shouldn’t evaluate our players based on Emery’s Arsenal of 19/20 as a mark on how good they are. Else Auba would be 50m and we’d have zero players over 30m. Zero.

  101. Graham62

    Ashwin

Oh don’t worry, we all agree “that Emery needs to be shown the door asap”

All we need to replace him is someone who actually knows what they are doing.

  102. Ishola70

And what was wrong with the suggestion of Pulgar Chika?

He’s a DM who has work rate and actually has something about him off the ball which Arsenal midfielders lack.

If you are suggesting that Arsenal can do no better for the midfield that there are no better options then you are daft. Living in denial.

Suggesting a player like Pulgar is not club scouting or trying to be clever. He was on prime TV for his national team.

  103. Graham62

    raptora

So the gist of it all is that Mr Emery “has no idea” what he’s doing.

I think that’s obvious to us all.

  104. Receding Hairline

Ashwin that’s the thing, many of this superstar managers come with baggage.

Below was Conte’s comments after coaching Inter through one of the worst second half performances i have ever seen against Dortmund

“They tell me that I should smile more on television,” he added. “But I always end up saying the same things, about the growth process, about taking it step by step.

“The lads are giving everything and going at full pelt and I can’t ask them for more than that,” he said.

“We are talking about players who, apart from Diego Godin, have never won anything. Who do we turn to? Nicolo Barella who has come from Cagliari? Or [Stefano] Sensi, who came from Sassuolo?”

It’s never their fault and i guarantee you will read stuff like that if Jose ends up here.

I mean if he believes he should throw away a two goal lead because his squad have never won anything he is being dishonest. He has soaked up accolades for the way Inter are playing but the minute something went wrong he calls out the board, same thing happened at Chelsea.

We need an up and comer and we have a few in the game. Many on here scoffed at Rodgers now he is the next big thing

  105. Ishola70

    Yes Raptora.

I have already said that Emery isn’t good enough and must go.

But you can’t name me one comparable AM in the Arsenal squad comparable to Mount and Pulisic not one.

They have two dangerous AMs that look like they could score every week while Arsenal have none zero.

  106. raptora

So before the start of the season players like Jorginho, Kovacic, Mount, Pulisic and Abraham were higher rated than Torreira, Ceballos, Pepe, Aubameyang and Lacazette?

Or are they rated higher now than the 2nd bunch because Chelsea has been playing much better than Arsenal?

Totally got nothing to do with the respective teams managers.

  107. Paulinho

“We need an up and comer and we have a few in the game. Many on here scoffed at Rodgers now he is the next big thing”

Yep, I brought him up here at the end of 17/18 and was met a few howls of derision.

It’s too late anyway. He knows he has fallen on his feet at Leicester with defined players that know what they are. Maddison is an obvious number ten, Tielemans an obvious number eight, Ndidi number six etc etc. Streamlined squad with no excess cutaneous crap that he can build on.

  108. guest man aka WW

the choices appear limited and many not attractive. Mourinho wont work.
To introduce an autocratic egotistical know-all into a club where the players are in uninspired casual beach mode will have a negative effect.
Mourinho comes with warts an all.
It would in the short term be better if Freddie has a stint. His tenure can be as short as wanted…….no costly contract handcuffs. The players like and listen to him. Its not a huge upheval
In fact Freddie apparently acts as translater for Mr “Good ebening ….already

  109. andy1886

Emery is toast, just a matter of when. Rodgers would probably do a good job but I’m not convinced he’d be welcome or that he’d want it. Too much water under that bridge. What we need is a hungry young manager who knows the PL. I’d give Eddie Howe a shot, has defied the odds at Bournemouth who really shouldn’t be in the PL at all logically. He wouldn’t be expensive and would accept that he has to prove himself capable of taking on a big club.

It’s hard to see how we would be worse off if we gave him a shot.

  110. raptora

    Ishola,
I think that Pulisic is a winger/am and Pepe is a winger.
Pepe would be the whos supposed to score more while Pulisic would be more of the playmaker winger.
If Pulisic looks more dangerous than Pepe I think it’s based on the teams they play in.

Imo if Pepe was to move to Chelsea instead of us he’d have scored 10 goals already.

They have a game plan and we don’t. It’s simple as.

  111. Marko

Not sure I’d blame Raul totally for Emery not working out it was after all a decision by committee the committee being himself Ivan and Sven and reportedly he wanted Enrique too. Understandable in hindsight given we only interviewed him Arteta and Vieira. I don’t understand the angle of changing tact and going after Raul I really don’t now that it’s looking like Emery will be sacked any day now. Since he’s come in we’ve seen an underperforming French manager gone, we’ve seen an underperforming German head of recruitment leave, we’ve seen an awful CEO go and have slowly gotten better in the transfer market not to mention that he’s likely to give the underperforming Spanish Forrest Gump the sack I’d say in the next week. I’d say Raul is safe going forward. I like that football plans going forward seem to be taken by him and Edu as opposed to the other two that were here.

  112. Chika

“He’s a DM who has work rate and actually has something about him off the ball which Arsenal midfielders lack.”

Pack it in dummy, you’re no club scout.

“If you are suggesting that Arsenal can do no better for the midfield that there are no better options then you are daft. Living in denial.”

Haha Legrove 101 – invent a claim that was never made, ascribe it to a poster then argue against it.

You are the biggest idiot for persistently citing player poverty as the reason for our abysmal displays.

  113. Paulinho

Raptora – There has been no revisionism on my part. I said this about them the weekend the season started.

    “PaulinhoAugust 10, 2019 20:50:15
I rate Mason Mount quite highly. He’s one of the few mids that makes runs in beyond. Kovacevic and him could link well with Croatian staying deep and looking for his runs.”

    PaulinhoAugust 10, 2019 21:14:40
Terraloon – Loftus-Cheek was looking incredible before his injury as well.Chelsea really do have a great bunch of youngsters. Abraham reminds me a bit of Adebayor first breaking through.

  114. Ishola70

    Raptora

Pulisic can play winger or AM and actually looks more dangerous playing AM.

It’s true that Lampard is showing much more offensive play in relation to Emery much more but he also has better options for AM than Emery has.

Lampard is proving a better coach than Emery as well as having the better AM options.

  115. Chika

Apparently, Pulisic is more suited for the league and has a better record than Pepe. It has nothing to do with how they’re both deployed by their respective coaches.
