Emery has two excellent decisions forced on him

by & filed under News Review.

So it would appear my hunch about Xhaka and the counselling thing being a nonsense was spot on, according to Arseblog the player was angry that Arsenal had packaged the blow-up like that. It really is grim that the club would use ‘mental health’ to deflect standard shitty behaviour and hurt feelings. 10 years ago, when someone famous would get caught with their pants down, they’d come out as a ‘sex addict.’ There would be a serious conversation about the seriousness of addiction, and we’d sympathise with person that simply couldn’t have night out without having to sleep with babes behind their partners back. In 2019, you can pretty much deflect anything by alluding to it being a little deeper, you know, a little more, ‘let’s not talk about this considering the current climate.’

It works as well. So many people calling bullshit on this story yesterday were being slammed for their insensitivity. So it’s a little amusing to find out that the player was annoyed that the narrative was incorrect, he was simply pissed at the fans.

The great thing about this revelation is it helps us cut faster to the clearest interpretation of this whole debacle: Xhaka ain’t captain material.

He couldn’t properly apologise.

He couldn’t formulate a response in good time.

He still doesn’t understand that his behaviour was wrong, regardless of the circumstances.

The manager isn’t going to play him this weekend, part one of Emery being boxed into better decisions by circumstance.

I think it’s absolutely hilarious to watch Emery dance around in tar over the ‘problem’ of Xhaka. Any manager that could read the situation would have seen this issue as a huge opportunity.

  1. Emery could have won respect of the fans and players by making a decision on Arsenal principles.
  2. He could have used the actions of a petulant player to cover for his HORRENDOUS mistake in giving the player the armband in the first place.

Best thing for him is he doesn’t have to start a player that’s a tactical weakness for us for the next month. Let’s be honest, Emery was coming around to the idea that his captain was shit. He subbed him off on 70 against Sheffield United, then on 64 against Palace.

By total fluke, we might start to see a midfield that’s more balanced and fit for the Premier League games.

That’s the good news.

On the bad news front, you can tell the beginnings of the end are upon us for the manager. The club has lost control of the media narrative. Players, agents and journos are not playing ball like the used to. Ultimately, it’s because the media don’t like Emery, I was hearing that last year, now fan sentiment has switched, watch them go for his jugular.

The Independent has a weird story about the players ripping the piss out of Emery behind his back.

There are some other stories about agents raising the ‘bad management’ to senior leadership. Last season, I wouldn’t have believed it, this season, we have mega agents involved and players like David Luiz. Players bring down managers when you’re in bed with super agents.

This isn’t just an attack on Emery, it’s also getting at Edu. Where is his leadership and sharp decision making in all this? It’s a total mess and he’s all over this.

To cap off the nightmare week for Arsenal, Mesut Ozil is posting happy tweets which allude to him starting this weekend.

Once again, Emery has made a public stance about the player, once again, he’s caved.

We all knew he would. But we’ve literally gone from, ‘Edu and Raul told me to do it’ last week, to Mesut starting two games in a row. Mesut has played his hand superbly.

I think it’s the right decision considering how little creativity we’ve had in the squad. We’ve also seen that the player still has it, Mesut dropping a blistering performance in midweek.

… it half looks bad, doesn’t it.

If you are ostracising someone, go all in or don’t go public with what you are doing. Emery is an amateur. He did the same last season with Aaron Ramsey (and Ozil). If you don’t have the guts to follow through, don’t make big statements about players. Very simple.

Still, it appears we’ve landed in two good positions by accident. Our midfield will be more dynamic, and our most creative player will get the chance to succeed or fail.

Right, that’s me done. See you in the comments. x

I think Emery’s substitutions are mostly premeditated coz nothing else explains the mindless changes that he makes during a game.

  2. Dissenter

It’s obvious to all that the Emery era is effectively over.
Fans are tired of him hence all the empty seats.
The play on the field is abysmal, it takes eons to move the ball across 10 yards, we pass the ball back more than even Stoke city used to do.
Raul and Edu have to pull the plug quickly before it gets worse. It’s not going to get better than this.

“No point in arguing with posters still crying squad poverty”

    TR7

Emery needs to move on end of story and a better manager than him could get Arsenal in the top four places.

But forget about just paltry top four for just a moment. We all want Arsenal to do better than just wanting to get in the top four and that’s it.

And if Arsenal want to seriously improve on just scrapping into the top four then as well as Emery being moved on then certain players have to be moved on.

Everyone knows Arsenal’s midfield is not up to scratch either down to not enough experience and lack of quality senior players in that poistion.

Everyone knows Chambers is not good enough individually. Everyone knows that David Luiz is an awful signing and can only hide his weaknesses playing in a back three or at least a club that has more defensive awareness as whole.

We all know Sokratis was only a stop gap and can have his off days.

We all know Mustafi is a horrible defender.

We all know Rob Holding is being over-rated to ridiculous levels.

We all know that Kolasinac isn’t good enough individually.

We all know that Torreira is a pack player who needs a player alongside him and is not a soliray sitting DM.

We can all see that Ceballos is looking to be not good enough.

Most of the world knows Xhaka is not good enough.

Everyone knows that while Guendouzi has promise he is green.

    Willock kid.

Everyone man and his dog knows AMN is gash.

Everyone knows that Ozil is a luxury player who isn’t going to show consistency to any great level.

Everyone knows that while Auba is a great marksman he isn’t going to be able to pick this team up by the scruff of it’s neck when it is struggling.

This isn’t about top four. It’s lookig beyond and Arsenal getting better than just a top four place.

Yes Arsenal need to move on Emery if they want a better chance of top four this season. But by god how this fanbase over-rate this current squad.

Results or should we say non-results are so easy to predict. So easy. And that is a personell problem as well as the bigger problem of the coach.

I wanted wenger out 8 before he went so this is nothing to do with the senile one but emery isn’t delivering shit for us and I’m hoping this regime know when to change thing unlike the last one

  5. Gunnernet

Then u have chelski coming strong next year after taking rebuilding step this one and be eligible out in the market again, pool and city will be out of reach and scum and united cannot get any worse… add leicester there and it looks ominous… oh dear oh dear..

  6. Tee

We might be lacking in some areas on the field but it still doesn’t explain why we are this bad.

What do they even practise in training?

    Police and thief?

  7. Just Another Customer

I’m just hoping in the background Raul/Edu are sorting this out so that we won’t get another dud hire like Emery. The shenanigans left by Gazidis won’t be happening again I hope.

  8. Ishola70

    Gentlebris
“There is a man who can fix all this and do a dog fight to get us top 4: Jose. But well you all hate him.”

He may be able to get top four but it would only be a tape over job just like his stint at Man United.

Unless Arsenal got in some senior players of better quality along with Mourinho then it’s all for nothing in the real long run. It will only be temporary improvement.

Arsenal need a hungrier coach than Mourinho and some senior player buys in the transfer market.

  9. HighburyLegend

@Gentlebris : not all of us.
Damn, never though I would say something like that one day… lol

But like tom cruise was saying in mission impossible, desperate times needs desperate measures.

  10. Gunnernet

I agree with dissenter there, ozil had a decent game for the second consecutive time in a week. He was even defending well. The man just came back from cryostat.. I ll never understand why Emery picked ceballos ahead of Pepe in the 4 4 2 and why he refused to use him as a sub especially since he didnt even play midweek.. horrible changes.. maybe he decide to freeze out Pepe for 2 months now that ozil is back to the fold…

  11. Receding Hairline

When you say stupid stuff like that Chika it shows you up for the uncivilized twat you are. Someone disagrees with me on an issue quick abuse him, get personal, say silly childish things.

How old are you? If you have fantasies of sleeping with someone else’s wife go out there and woe one, don’t bore the blog with it.

“What do they even practise in training?Police and thief?”

Haha Emery is actively pulling the team backwards. People crying player poverty are completely off the mark.

A better coach is a more pressing need.

  13. rollen

TR7 with competition level atm Wenger would get us relageted.

    He needs to go ASAP.
Who do we get as a new manager?

  14. Gentlebris

‘Boring negative football’ WITH NO RESULTS is what we have right now.

  15. HighburyLegend

“If you want boring negative football then hire Mourinho.”

Lol Red, it is true that our football under Emery is sooooooo spectacular.

  16. Gunnernet

Ishola i honestly think thats a terrible idea… I cannot even think how it is possible for people seeing Jose as a solution.. it will the last straw before complete annihilation.. if Jose comes, APOCALYPSE is coming with him. Stop talking nonsense!

  17. Gentlebris

‘Arsenal need a hungrier coach than Mourinho and some senior player buys in the transfer market.’

Believe me Ishola, Jose Mourinho is the hungriest coach on the planet today. If he could land the arsenal job he wouldn’t dare tank it. He does and he’s out on the street and he knows it.

  18. Ishola70

    Gunnernet

    What are you on about.

I have always been anti- Mourinho appointment on here.

Read the post properly and then you will realise.

  19. Gentlebris

‘If the players are up to scratch then they wouldn’t need a coach.’

Redtruth just dropped the diamond line of all time.

  20. Ishola70

    Gentlebris

No Mourinho isn’t the hungriest coach on the planet.

He’s a past his best coach that still thinks of himself as a superstar.

Mourinho doesn’t get this club to get better and move forward in the long term. He only improves in the short term.

And he will think he is better and bigger than the club he manages if he comes to Arsenal. Horrible.

  21. Emiratesstroller

Plenty of empty seats in last 3 home games.

Arsenal has one of the most potent forwards lines in EPL. Yet we are struggling to score goals. We are totally dependent on Aubameyang.

As I have maintained all season our midfield is unbalanced and lightweight.
Guendouzi runs around like a rabbit and Ceballos is useless with absolutely and no end product. This is without doubt Arsenal’s weakest midfield in last 25 years.

Defence as usual cannot hold onto a lead.

Manager is in my view clueless with no real gameplan. Frankly I think that
we will be lucky to finish this season in top 6. The current top 4 teams are
playing much better football than us.

The manager is completely devoid of ideas.

  22. Chika

Please have a look at this conversation when you can. Why is there a need for these Philistine behaviors?
No one on this side has control over Arsenal, all we render are opinions and this blog is vibrant because of the diversity of opinion.

  24. Emiratesstroller

    RT

You are so predictable in your posts whether on football or even on your
politics. I am beginning to wonder whether you are Jeremy Corbyn in disguise.

Wenger has gone and Ozil has played only 2 games in EPL so is not exactly
responsible for the current situation at club.

We are playing sterile and ineffective football and even when we have a two
goal winning margin as was case against both CP and Liverpool we cannot
    hold onto lead.

Indeed there has not been a single game played in EPL this season where one
could argue that we were deserving of a win. The miracle is that we have 17
    points so far this season.

  25. Tee

If we can’t find a proper manager for now, I think Freddie should be reinstated as the coach till the end of the season.

It will at least take away the negative vibe and he can’t do any bad than Emery.

    Let’s start all over again.

  26. Gentlebris

‘Mourinho doesn’t get this club to get better and move forward in the long term. He only improves in the short term.’

Ishola, the thing is if we sign another supposed good coach who has no top level EPL winning experience and he falls all over things like Emery and Jose goes to Bayern and both club and manager set things on fire we would then wonder……

  27. Chika

Tell your friend to stop bringing complaints about his wife on here and asking for tips. It also has nothing to do with Arsenal.

  28. David Smith

The only thing keeping Emery at this point is an owner with a track record of being reluctant to do much about anything
But, Emery will have us very close to the relegation places when 2020 arrives.
The players are demotivated, Emery probably is as well, he knows he won’t last beyond the season , even Stan won’t take that

  29. Spanishdave

If Emery said that he should be fired now.
Emery out Freddie in for now see how it goes for the interim.
Viera maybe. with Freddie and Dennis in the coaching team.

  30. Receding Hairline

Complaints about my wife? Lol good grief talk about saving face with lies.

The only Time I discussed matrimony on here was when I informed the blog I was getting married. You have been called out for your nonsense and you resort to lies yet I am a pathetic scum…. You can’t make this stuff up

  31. Ishola70

    Gentlebris

I have doubts that as well as Emery not being good enough and being over-rated that he also lacks that real hunger as well after coming from money bags PSG who let’s be honest have been on a higher european stage than Arsenal for several seasons now.

Arsenal need a hungrier coach as well as a better one.

Of course there is always going to be risk if you take a chance on a manager to improve this club in the real long term and not just temporary improvement that is not even going to worry the real top end of football.

  32. Gentlebris

‘Tell your friend to stop bringing complaints about his wife on here and asking for tips. It also has nothing to do with Arsenal.’

    Oh RH is married then.

  33. Emiratesstroller

    David Smith

I tend to agree with you.

However, I think that it is Josh Kronke who is most probably the person making the final decisions. I think that he is the one family member who shows a modicum interest in the clubs affairs.

  34. Receding Hairline

Gentlebris I’m happy married thank you. Not that it has any bearing on how I view football. Some of you really take this place too seriously. Look at Charlie, we go at each other all day yet its all for fun. You can actually feel the hate laced in that fellow Chika’s post, all for what really? That I didn’t tow the emery out line. Get help kid.

  35. Peckobill

Stan is a crap owner but he leaves those decisions to Raul . It’s on him and edu to decide on emery and take it to Stan

  36. Dissenter

That’s why I hate the personal disclosures here.
It’s like casting your pearls before wild swine. There’s always that classless scumbag that will cross every line to score a cheap pint.

  37. Emiratesstroller

    Spanishdave

That is what I posted earlier today.

We need a coaching staff who can articulate with the players and provide them with a gameplan.

  38. Chika

Hate? Hahaha it’s either you think too highly of yourself or you’re the one who takes this place too seriously.

  39. Leftsidesanch

Two wins in nine PL games. We’ve picked up where we left off at the conclusion of last season. Needing a goal and bringing on Kolasinac rather than Pepe?

A manager who will do anything to fit in his favourites as opposed to winning the game needs to be saved from himself. His incoherant ramblings, he’s been here how long and still hasn’t bothered to fluently learn English. The players look so uncertain and lack confidence. This isn’t a title winning squad by any stretch but its a whole lot better than performances suggest.

Raul, Edu, Josh are as culpable. Unai will not change and has no desire to.

  40. gonnerram

We need a coach immdtly who can restore our identity. In previous years, we would have been called naive in trying to score 2 or 3 goals and miss loads of chances and the opposition will nick a goal. In the current team, we nick a goal then shut stop allowing shot after shot to be aimed at our goalie. Wolves had 2 spectacular chances within the 18 yard and both times there were desperate blocks which saved our bacon.

Guen was clueless and careless today – in the first 15 mins he gave away needless balls to the oppn which pushed us on to the back foot. We simply cant control the midfield and suck the oppn to one side and strike on the other side.

Need a new coach I am afraid.

  41. Redtruth

What bullshit would have Wenger said after this draw.

Wenger: “We were a little naive, we lacked focus and belief, i believe we have the mental strength to fight back and show our qualities in the next game.”

  42. Receding Hairline

    Saw your last post Gentlebris

The fellow you addressed is being beyond disgusting actually but I expected such from him so I am not surprised. Just amused at his pathetic attempts to save face after getting called out.

  46. Chika

Next thing, you’d be denying ever mentioning your age or profession. lol what a shameless fellow.

Anyways, you’ve been a good distraction tonight after your lord served us another tactical master plan.

  47. Ishola70

    Chelsea are winning.

That game is not over yet though as Chelsea can still conceded a goal at any time.

Crystal Palace have proved to be a better away side in EPL than home one for several seasons so it would not be a massive shock if Leicester could snatch a win there.

By the end of this weekend Arsenal could be six points behind Leicester and Chelsea and with a probable defeat looming away against Leicester next after that.

It could be all eggs in the europa league basket nonsense again.

Not good enough. Nowhere near good enough.

  48. Valentin

Going forward we were slightly better because Özil and Lacazette hold the ball up and help others to join. As soon as Lacazette left, we reverted to type making thing worse with Aubameyang reluctance to chase lost cause.

However defensively we were not disorganised, we were just organised in such a strange way. Deliberately lopsided. His selection of personnel and selection is still something that I can’t comprehend.

Worse it looks like we’re have no plan or coaching on throw-ins and free-kicks. That is so disappointing because that was one good thing of initial Emery, the free-kicks were inventive. Now they are just launch the ball upfield.

  49. David Smith

Agree ES about Josh, but wonder if he , and Ivan maybe went slightly against Stans true instinct in persuading him to get rid of Wenger, would imagine Stans wish, as ever would have been to let Wenger see out his contract, at least.
If so Josh may be a little compromised, Stan might have the attitude of you forced this situation, now live with it , and learn, boy
    Or maybe not!
Whatever, they really need to act, but fear they might not, at least until the end of the season. By then, we could well be mid table, at best, strikers resigned to leaving, fans permanently disengaged . And knocked out of Europe by some unworthy

  50. Gentlebris

‘Careful Gentlebris on what you condone and support, one day you might be on the other side of an argument with his sort and your newborn will be dragged into it.’

I thought the guy was just making abstract jokes, man. Never knew anyone would be real about such.

  51. Redtruth

At least that ends the debate on whether Ozil is good enough for Arsenal, or will it, the plot thickens, stay tuned for more episodes of Ozil, will he or won’t he play.

  52. David Smith

Maybe Peckobill, but Stan would still have to sign off anything big like that
Would still love to know who of them wanted to give Emery a new deal this summer, again, those people might not want to lose face at this stage
Just hoping even our board has its limits though, because emery might well plumb those depths , whatever they are

  53. Spanishdave

Emery is continuing the level of results that he had for the last six games of last season.
Bumbling along with no purpose to the game plan.
We had no width today, Chambers get in good positions but cannot cut inside the full back but instead he passes it back every time.
All those new players and here we are going downwards.
Perhaps Emery said we have the right tic tacs he likes the peppermint ones.

  54. Gentlebris

So Emery said he got tactics right when he couldn’t win at home against Wolves.

If you can’t win when you get tactics right, under which condition are you gonna win?

If Edu and Raul were waiting for an excuse to sack Emery then this is it.

‘Well señor Emery you worked out all your expertise and you eventually got the tactics right but you still couldn’t win at home against Wolves. So what is there to hope for about you?’

  55. into the red

If that’s true about them making up the counselling story, they have gone even lower in my estimation than they were before. I thought they were a bunch of chancers, basking in their fat salaries and bonuses, and doing little. Now that seems generous. it turns out they will lie to the fans about our own players, using a particularly tasteless and insulting cover story to blame their own support.
The whole thing reeks of a rotten culture behind the scenes, typical of an organisation with an absentee owner, and where they upper heirarchy bask in their expense accounts, knowing the money will keep flowing whatever happens. All they have to do is let Emery take the blame, and issue blatantly false cover stories to the gullible fans who prop them up, and who they don’t have to answer to. The same ones they insulted with their pathetic ‘leak’ after the Baku debacle about ‘we’ are the Arsenal – never a bigger lie than that, given how disconnected they are from any semblance of the old club’s history and ethos.
They will tolerate Emery until the end of the season, and then would you trust this lot to make a bold, effective decision on who comes next? It’s like asking a bunch of first class air travellers, drunk on their fine wines and food, to nominate a replacement pilot.
Frank Lampard is an object lesson on what kind of manager they should be looking for, but they wouldn’t have a clue where to look.

  56. salparadisenyc

Was clear last season, crystal clear this. Emery doesn’t have what it takes or is needed to take Arsenal forward. Absolute wrong hire from start, nothing bold about it.

Sooner we cut shot, better no player injection will carry him to the promised land.

  57. Ishola70

That unbeaten run last season was down to the novelty of having a new manager in place that eventually wears off coupled with not playing a single team that finished in the top ten in the league away from home apart from Man Utd which ended in a draw.

The faltering this season compared to last was not hard to predict. And this even with the addition of a Pepe.

  58. Ishola70

Pulisic is proving his worth with every match.

Him and Mount are so dangerous from attacking midfield positions in relation to goal scoring.

If Arsenal want to continue to be poor off the ball and have a suspect midfield and defence at least get in an attacking midfield goalscorer like Chelsea have as some sort of compensate.

  59. Peckobill

Leicester and Chelsea are going to leave us behind . Our season is over and that’s depressing as it’s only November
Our club has plummeted to new depths

  60. Pierre

    Ishola
“That unbeaten run last season was down to the novelty of having a new manager in place”

The unbeaten run still had the Wenger’s DNA on the football we played.

As soon as Emery’s philosophy kicked in , we hit a brick wall.

  61. MGooner

We are on our way be cementing our place as a Europa League team.

We were very lucky ro have GG and Wenger hold the fort for so long. We punched above our weight.

The yankees are like snake oil merchants. they will fool the fans to sell tickets and continue the nonsense

  62. Ishola70

    Pierre
”The unbeaten run still had the Wenger’s DNA on the football we played.”

    Not really.

Even if fans appreciated the unbeaten run last season it was also remarked that the actual performances were a bit sketchy overall. In many cases not overly convincing.

That you feel to need to bring in a false Wenger narrative says it all really.

  63. Redtruth

I’m very glad I’ve managed to snuff out most of the unwarranted criticism of Emery, however their remains a nasty element determined to undermine Emery.

  64. Pierre

Watching the way we play our football, we look like we are stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea.

If we try and play possession football , the passing is too slow , the players have too many touches ,there is a lack of movement and bad decision making.

Alternatively, if we try and play back to front with speed, there is no cohesion or off the cuff play .

Playing with pace shouldn’t mean frantic and that’s what we look , frantic.

Again , the players are not picking the right passes …Ozil had a half decent game today , not brilliant that’s for sure ,but how many times did he make runs and the ball never arrived and how many times did he pass to a team mate and they squandered possession.

Since Emery arrived ,the team have lost all their natural instincts on how to play the game.
We have no idea how to make space for ourselves on the pitch.

Why the manager would go with a diamond midfield God only knows, and what is doing putting Torreira anywhere on the pitch except his best position.

And to leave Pepe on the bench ..Strange.

I feel a little sorry for the players, I would have thought that when Emery told the team that they were playing with a diamond, they said to themselves ” oh shit, here we go again” …

I cant blame the players at the moment as I believe any player would struggle to make an impression the way Emery sets up a team .

Will wait until a new manager comes in .

  65. Ishola70

    Pierre

How can you not blame Ceballos for failing to track a runner from a Wolves throw-in that led to their goal and ultimately lost the three points.

It should be basic football for a professional player to track a player from such an obvious throw in.

Arsenal are still shit off the ball.

Just like they were under Wenger for so many seasons.

Emery hasn’t addressed this issue at all.

  66. Pierre

    Ishola
I’m sure you understood that I was talking about the style of our football during the unbeaten run …quality performances v Leicester, liverpool and Fulham that we haven’t even come close to repeating in the league this season.

As it stands now, there is no style .

  67. Redtruth

    Pierre
“I cant blame the players at the moment as I believe any player would struggle to make an impression the way Emery sets up a team .”

I think you’ll find Ozil has been struggling for years …

  68. Pierre

    Ishola
“How can you not blame Ceballos for failing to track a runner from a Wolves throw-in that led to their goal and ultimately lost the three points.”

If Torreira was in his rightful position as a DM then he would have been the one covering the runner.

Defend Emery all you like but if you and he thinks that giving our defence no cover from midfield is going to win us football matches ,then you are sadly mistaken.

“I’m sure you understood that I was talking about the style of our football during the unbeaten run …quality performances v Leicester, liverpool and Fulham that we haven’t even come close to repeating in the league this season.”

lol Fulham the worst EPL club in living memory last season.

You are not fooling anyone in trying to imply that Arsenal played stylish football in that unbeaten run overall last season.

People were actually commenting at the time that more than enough of those reults in that unbeaten run last season was down to application rather than stylish football.

  70. MGooner

The next step forward for us would be to appoint a guy like Tony Adams as gaffer.

Or Big Sam or someone like him.

  71. Ishola70

I’m not defending Emery at all.

In fact I would ask why Emery is failing to install in his players basic tracking of opposition that we saw from Ceballos today.

    Basic.

  72. Ishola70

And remember we were saying for the first few matches of Ceballos that he looked to have something about him off the ball as well as on it.

Today he was criminal in not carrying out basic tracking of the opposition player.

Emery doesn’t have these players on it. They are off.

  73. vickingz

Wenger came and made us accept 4th position as a trophy, what’s emery gonna make us accept now? That drawing wolves at home means we got out tactics right??

  74. vickingz

If Torreira was in his rightful position as a DM then he would have been the one covering the runner.

Was torreira even on the pitch when the equalizer came? Some people self

  75. vickingz

Chelsea with transfer ban is in third position and emery with all his arsenal sits where? I find it so disgusting that some so called fans are still being blind to emery and his bullcrap. Sussing him out was very easy

  76. Pierre

    Ishola
Elementary mistakes happen because the players haven’t a clue what’s happening out there on the pitch.

The only player who hasn’t caught the Enery disease is Ozil.

He gets the ball and passes to a team mate, he finds pockets of space on the pitch and continually probes for openings

At a guess I would say he created at least 5 chances today with the minimum of effort.

That’s not to say he didn’t work hard as he probably had the most blocks , its just that he makes it look easy .

I expect you to disagree of course.

“Pierre thinks one dimensional walking the ball in the net jumpers for goalposts football was stylish…”

Aah yes, those were the days…

  78. Ishola70

The myth that Torreira is a great covering defender on his own has to stop.

He is a little pack player that needs at least another player alongside him and his major attribute is pressing the ball not being a last man defender before the central defence.

Of course Emery is daft keep playing him further up but he isn’t a last man solitary DM either.

Under Wenger, we were great on the ball, but shot off the ball.

This season under Emery we’re shit on the ball, and shit off the ball.

  80. Ishola70

    Pierre

Arsenal have been shit off the ball for basically a decade and counting.

The shit we saw from Ceballos today we saw from other Arsenal players ten plus years ago on onwards from that.

It’s a disease that has been embedded in the club for a very long time.

Emery was meant to try to erdicate or if not that try to remedy the disease. He hasn’t. He fails.

    Brilliant expression.

    Pierre,

We were so useless at building from the back that Ozil had to keep dropping back to help out….presumably Torreira was too afraid to disobey Emery’s instructions to keep as high up the pitch as possible.

    Really, really poor.

You know that Torriera played alongside Xhaka in that unbeaten run last season. You have even commented on it yourself.

He is not a solitary isolated DM. He needs another player alongside him.

And before you go on about this proving that if only Torreira is played alongside Xhaka then is all dandy no. Just no. Leicester absolutely destroyed Arsenal on their own ground last season with Torreira sitting deep with Xhaka. Destroyed Arsenal.

As said the unbeaten run last season was due to the novelty of a new manager coming in that wears off over time coupled with not playing a team that finished in the top ten in the league away from home barring Manchester United.

Fans always want remedies to be only one or two instances.

Arsenal I’m afraid have more than or two ailments before they are recovered to see them where we want them to be.

“Who can remember Wenger playing Arteta as a DM who was slow as fuck and couldn’t tackle”

    He was shit defensively yes.

But yet again fans didn’t care that he was shit off the ball.

They only cared what he did on the ball.

  87. HighburyLegend

If the logic is respected at Leicester, that should be really ugly for us.
But then we will know if Edu & Raul have some balls.

    “”Which was shit too…”

    lol

    He knitted the midfield together.

We have heard this term over the last few seasons haven’t we regarding a current player that was ever present until very recently.

Sometimes I try to rationalise things and say that we’re just on a run of poor form, but this season Emery’s tactics, team selections and substitutions have been so bizarre that I think he’s trying to outfox opposing managers through fooling them by randomness. They just shrug and stick to their guns, like Nuno did today, and exploit our confusion by creating more chances and outshooting us.

  90. RodneyKing

It really sickens me when I see Torreira so far up the pitch. I know he’s scored a couple of goals but a reliable goal-scorer he’s not.

On one occasion today, just before we scored, he had the chance to slip the ball to Aubameyang for a tap-in but took a shot instead. Minutes later Lacazette showed him how to do it. Well, he didn’t learn because on another occasion, he tried to score again instead of passing to a teammate.

Reminds me of when Ramsey used to vacate his position and got criticized for it. My opinion at the time was that he wouldn’t do it if Wenger didn’t allow it.

It’s the same with Torreira. He’s definitely better at breaking up play and winning back the ball better than anyone at the club yet Emery asks him to play very high up the pitch while asking Guendouzi, who’s very, very poor defensively, to play deeper. I don’t understand what Emery is thinking there.

  91. vickingz

Is that the same Chelsea who have spent a £1b on transfers .

@ redtruth, can’t you just for once stop being stupid? What has Chelsea’s transfer business got to do with emery’s performance?

Did Chelsea buy players during the last transfer window? No.

Did Arsenal spend money on players’ acquisition during transfer window? Yes.

Is Chelsea playing better than arsenal? Yes

Is Chelsea topping arsenal on the epl table? Yes

So, what does your £1b transfer transactions of Chelsea offer to the fact that Chelsea is topping us and playing good football even with the transfer ban?

  92. vickingz

@Rodneyking, this same point has been overflogged here and emery is just being too rigid to learn and adjust. Firstly, he plays torreira higher up and secondly, he subs him in a premeditated fashion. You would have expected emery not to repeat the same mistake he made on Wednesday night by subbing torr but he made the same mistake again today. I now know why his fanboys are backing him, most of them are always right in their eyes, they know it all yet they lack results

  93. RodneyKing

@vickingz Another fun fact: Chelsea have a manger who understands “how the EPL works”. I just quoted Lampard. He said so earlier today.

Anyway, you can’t really compare Chelsea and Arsenal. Chelsea have been a properly run football club for over a decade now. They knew they were losing Hazard and they went and got Pulisic. Jorginho and Kovacic are both better than what we have in midfield.

Judging by the quality of their youngsters – Mount, Tomori, Abraham, Hudson-Odom, etc – they also seem to be doing better than us in that department.

Over the years, they’ve spent a lot of money on transfers which has helped to turn them in to a team that more often than not excepts to be successful. On the other hand, Arsenal’s reputation has been waning over the same period.

We only have to look at Man City and Liverpool to see what we need to do to get back to the top.

    Yep
2 holding midfielders , exact my preference then as it is now.

4-2-3-1 is my preferred system ..it gives you a bit of everything.

    A back 4
    2 holding midfielders
    A playmaker
    2 wide players.

    And is flexible .
