Jose Mourinh-oh-no

by & filed under News Review.

Good morning my darlings, a very short post from me today because I have NOTHING to write about.

The hot news that has the comments section in a fluster is the story that Jose Mourinho has said NO to Lyon. Why? He wants a job in England.

Some are speculating he’s looking to sneak the Spurs job, I find this one tough to grapple with. Daniel Levy knows he has a great coach (that is clearly under fire), one that’s not dealt with dark times in his Scum career so far, so I’d imagine he’ll see it through with Poch.

Interesting thing with Spurs is they haven’t been a well-run club prior to Levy. If anything, Poch and the generation of elite talent they cultivated has been the happiest of accidents. I am going to watch with a fascinated eye to see what happens next, because based on historical evidence, they could go back to type after this generation withers and dies. Poch has created the impossible there, he’s crafted talent, he’s spent very little, and he’s kept players so motivated, money hasn’t been an issue. That’s coming to an end, the dream was a potless one.

Anyway… bring back Harry.

The second Jose conspiracy theory is that he’s waiting on Unai Emery to fail. Mustafi ramped up the pressure. As I said yesterday, the German defensive expert was on the path to a Balon D’or before Emery took over at Arsenal. The Spaniard crushed his spirit, forced Arsenal internet to take up arms against him, now Unai is left with blood on his hands.

Will the board tolerate this? Who knows…

I do think everyone has a feeling in their bones that Jose is waiting for the guillotine to drop. His agent is probably telling Edu that Jose is a top 4 machine, Edu probably has a top 4 bonus planned. The agent might even be slipping him a presentation… not a powerpoint, like Unai did… no, a Google Slides, because he is a modern businessman willing to create in the cloud… the same place he crafted his Arsenal vision.

I do not think this is a good long term option for Arsenal, but contrary to some of the shrieks I hear, Jose would be a good stop-gap… and any man that cries that he misses football is going to be more than happy to take on our incredible squad of players.

Also worth noting the press hype…

‘Jose was right about United after all’

Those stories are no accident.

Right, that’s my inflammatory post for the day, see YOU in the comments where I will battle you with all my will. xxx

The issue with Mourinho is that nobody which one they will have if they hire now.
The happy one or the malcontent?
The team builder or the toxic one?
I suspect that most chairmans would decide on a short term contract 18 months with option to extend but with explicit target clauses that if not met can lead to immediate employment termination without compensation.

I don’t like the man, but I suspect that with the right environment he may move away from his ultra defensive approach. I think that he would also pretty quickly realise that Arsenal does not have the players to play his favourite safety first low block football.
With ManUtd currently looking for a DoF and potentially making overture to Luis Campos of Lille (a very good friend of Mourinho), he could even make a return there at the end of the season.

  2. Leedsgunner

For those wondering how Arsenal would play with Mourinho has manager… go and watch how we played again Bournemouth. Boring defensive football.

Mourinho would not better any better.

GENIUS LINES…this is why I read the blog!

    Leeds,

Boring defensive football is when you know the opposition will have the ball but will not penetrate your defense. Under George Graham were sometimes boring, but were sound defensively. Conceding very few shots on goal excepts from far away tentative shots.

Against Bournemouth, it was not boring defensive football. It was turgid, impotent attack and completely incompetent defense. Without great last ditch tackles by Chambers and Guendouzi and poor finishing by Bournemouth, we would have drawn and potentially lost the game.

I don’t want Mourinho because I want to be entertained, but you can’t accuse his team of being easy to shoot against. Currently out of all 5 major European leagues Arsenal is the easiest team to shoot on goal against.

““Mustafi….the German defensive expert who was on the path to the Ballon D’or before Emery took over”

This is what Mustafi says to himself before he sits down with his cup of warm milk and cookies at night before he is tucked up in bed. Bless him.

  6. Leedsgunner

“Currently out of all 5 major European leagues Arsenal is the easiest team to shoot on goal against.”

    Agreed.

Why is that? It’s because Emery is out of his depth and out of ideas. He is not the answer.

  7. Gentlebris

Jose is the absolute right choice for us, so pls wipe your tears and do away with your cry baby reactions.

Our defense has been a basket for years and you are here saying no to one coach who is well known for successful defense drilling?

Jose won the PL, went away, came back and won it again then went away, in all this time we have won how many?

Liverpool was struggling behind us for years, they got Klopp and won the CL and are on the way to winning the PL now.

Jose two CL crowns, Arsenal how many?

Jose brought home the Europa trophy at the first time of asking with ManU, we have gone there twice and came home with nothing!

Are we talking football here or talking about who you like as a man or you don’t like?

If Jose had not hit some icebergs in his career, would he even look your way? Will Pep look your way?

  8. Chris

It’s an obvious no for Mourinho.

Aside from a feeling he would not be a success, his antics over the years and lack of respect for our club and Wenger should rule him out immediately.

I am still surprised Man Utd went for him in fact.

  9. Pierre

“Currently out of all 5 major European leagues Arsenal is the easiest team to shoot on goal against.”

There was a general acceptance on Le Grove that main protagonist for our defensive woes was Mesut Ozil.

Apparently it is like playing with ten men when Ozil is on the pitch..This must be true as it has been repeated over again and again by the media and on Le Grove .

This season, as we know , Ozil has rarely been on the pitch, and yet this Arsenal side concede chance after chance , the worst in Europe apparently.

Ozil has played in 2 games and whilst he was on the pitch we have conceded one goal , that was against Watford when Sokratis gave them a gift due to our manager’s insistence to playing out from the back. …hardly ozil’s fault I think it’s fair to say.

So it appears that our defensive woes are actually nothing to do with Ozil unless someone can come up with a set of figures to convince me otherwise.( that wont happen).

I have always believed that keeping possession of the football is the best way to take the pressure off the defence .

It may be difficult for some to fathom but having possession of the football means it is impossible for the opposition to create chance after chance.

The fact that our manager is willing to totally ignore the one player who is proficient at keeping possession and the one player who has CREATED THE MOST CHANCES since Emery has been at the club just confirms to me how inept he really is .

  10. Gentlebris

You wanna hate Jose even more?

Wait till he walks into the Spuds set up and permanently make them the third best team in England behind Citey and Liverpool. Just wait while hating.

  11. Steve

All the talk about Emery not good enough is bunkum. The years of aesthetic football was thoroughly enjoyed under AW. Such creativity drew us back in his last years. We called for change, the board got us UE. Now we want another change.
What is clear about UE is he outhink the opposition. He does that very well. If Arsenal is easy to beat as many want us to think, we have played Spurs, Man United, Liverpool, Newcastle, etc, yet, we have lost only to Liverpool.
To say if not because of a player or a goalkeeper we would have lost is not to know football. Teams take risk together. Sometimes it works. At other time it does not.
Even with the summer addition, if anyone have offered me third for Arsenal at week eight, I would have gladly taken it. Then what do we want. Mourinho is a boring winner until time caught up with him. Maybe Everton. Outside of that, he won’t get a job in any top six club in England.

  12. Freddie Ljungberg

    Don

Ok, so we have the cluless, terrible devil incarnate Emery in one corner with a aging squad and a tiny budget.

In the other we have the mighty Poch, who leaps tall buildings and rescues puppies in his spare time, that had 5 years to build a squad and plenty of money spent on it.

Still only 1 point separeted the 2 teams at the end of the season, when everyone in the world except you of course acknowledged that Spurs had a far better squad than us, how do you explain it?

Considering the limitations of the squad last season I think he did a decent job apart from the collapse at the end that was mostly but not entirely down to the poverty of the squad.

This season our squad is full of potential (although still missing some vital pieces), we’re 3rd without playing well, our first choice defenders hasn’t played and we’re integrating exciting youth players and waiting for the new signings to adapt. I don’t see a reason to go overboard and pretend the sky is falling when it clearly isn’t, you do you though.

  13. Freddie Ljungberg

    “Ok big balls
How smart are you? Can we see an IQ test?
How much money do you earn? How big is your home that you 100% rent? How may homes do you own? Do you live in England and if so then what shot hole area do you rent a piss ridden shoe box?”

Didn’t want to let Dons carefully and lovingly crafted masterpiece of a comment languish in abandonment in the other post when it deserves to be seen by all and sundry to show what a magnificent and not at all deranged person he is.

  14. bennydevito

Pedro you never fail to crack me up. You should write a comeback series of Peep Show.

Good post as always even if news is thin on the ground.

Word on the Manc vine is Ole’s for the chop if things go south after the International break.

Can’t see Poch walking at this stage so he’s out.

Allegri’s learning English so he’s probably favourite.

But you’ll never believe who the fans want and think Fergie could play a big part here…

    There’s only one Arsene Wenger.

    Seriously. That’s who they want.

  15. Gentlebris

‘What is clear about UE is he outhink the opposition. He does that very well. ‘

He does that very very well. In fact we had to play against 8 inferior teams and winning 5 of the games would have qualified us for CL, Emery was so able to out-think the opposition that he landed us in Europa.

Guy you obviously have an incredible ability to close your brains while thinking.

  16. bennydevito

    Pierre,

That’s debatable but also irrelevant. My point is no matter what the post says or what’s raging in the comments, you always bring Ozil into it.

You could be right though, not trying to argue.

  17. Gentlebris

‘But you’ll never believe who the fans want and think Fergie could play a big part here…There’s only one Arsene Wenger.Seriously. That’s who they want.’

Let’s face the fact Benny, that is actually thinkable.

Wenger became power drunk here and lost his way. We said Wenger was the reason our defence was so bad, well he left and our defence became much more horrible. A coach has not emerged who has been able to play Wenger creative brand of football on a budget, not one.

So if United ask Wenger out on a two year date, nothing horrible there.

  18. Pierre

    Benny
It’s not debatable in the slightest and it is relevant .

The club is paying a player 350 grand a week to sit at home , that makes it relevant.

It’s personal from Emery , I would congratulate him on his wisdom of ignoring Ozil if the team showed improvement on the pitch without him.

So until that improvement happens , I will continue to make his decision look a mockery .

If it all goes tits up for Emery on the pitch the handling of Ozil will be the NO.1 topic.

I believe he is making a big mistake because he is alienating himself from a large number of fans and causing a divide for no reason.

He could easily have played him in the europa cup game and kept him part of the squad but it is his decision and he will succeed or fail on it..

He is either brave or stupid ( I go for the latter)..
Stupid because he has created a situation where if performances do not improve, the fans will have little patience and will get on his back which will ultimately cost him his job.

The run in to Christmas is crucial.

  20. Graham62

I really don’t get it Pierre.

Your fixation (obsession) with Ozil holds no bounds.

It’s as if you attribute all of our negatives on the fact that Ozil is not in the team.

This is a naive and ignorant perception because, as you well know, Mesut Ozil would only turn up for the occasional home game and go missing in all our away games if playing.

On top of all of this his attitude stinks and he would be a major handicap because he is incapable of handling the physicality of the game at the top level.

    He is a busted flush.

  21. Luteo Guenreira

From my experience in life, successful people don’t usually harp about the fact they own a home, as it’s unsightly and mostly a pathetic endeavor. Poor isn’t a financial state, it’s a state a mind. Un you will be poor forever.

    Pierre
Agree with your thoughts. Not completely but partially. Ozil was made out at as the factor of our defensive problems last season but even without him we are still just bad defensively and him being ostracized has also affected the offense of the team. Emery is banking everything on the full backs and if that doesn’t fix our chance creation while also adding defensive solidity and defining a playing style them IDK how Emery is planning to convince Don Raul to trigger his extension.

Pedro Mourinho as a stop gap?. We already have a stop gap in Emery. Mourinho is not a stop gap type of manager. Not even close. He is someone you hire when you have already built a good team and are only gunning for trophies the next 3-4 years. No youth , no focus on finance or future of the club. Just Silverware. And I wouldn’t take Mourinho even if we were in such a situation. He has a proven track record of Leaving clubs in dire status financially and on-pitch. He divides the fan base and the dressing room . And lately he’s trophy winning sauce is not winning enough trophies for clubs to tolerate him. But you never know . He’s got something to prove and he is a changed man now.
Id probably wait for one more Mourinho spell before even considering him as a viable option for us. If he does something special like at Porto and rediscovers his special sauce then why not. Lyon would have been a good start to do just that.

  30. TheBayingMob

Jose as a stop gap. I don’t necessarily disagree, but i would ask a stop gap to what? If we have a clear vision of a young, upwardly thinking visionary manager who we have to wait a season for, sure, I can see that while Jose ram-raids us back into the top 4, but other than that it’s nonsense. Jose would sure demand a 4/5 year contract at a Wenger-esque level of pay per week (probably more as he would still be wanting to put one over Arsene even now), which would extinguish any notion of a stop gap or at least make it the most expensive stop gap we could possibly action.

People rarely change and even if they manage to smooth certain rough edges they soon appear when up against it.

  32. Freddie Ljungberg

Ozil again. When was the last time he put in any sort of meaningful performance in any away game or against any of our rivals in the PL? Oh 3 years going on never, ok carry on then.

He’s not the solution to anything, and the “treatment” of him is totally justifiable if as reported he’s now actually thinking about leaving the club, him and his wages is holding us back, that wouldn’t have been the case if he was this wonderful player that only Pierre sees.

Our defence will improve when it’s not full of championship level players, not a minute before, it will improve even more whenever Xhaka is not playing.

  33. KAY Boss

So some will welcome Mourinho at Arsenal? Says a lot about the fanbase who want a man who became quite popular aside his trophies by ridiculing the club at the least opportunity in pressers.
Mourinho is past it and his sauce isn’t there anymore.

  34. Words on a Blog

You know what will be comedy gold . Mourinho going to the Spurs on a four year contract and fuck the shit out of that place like he did with ManUtd or Chelsea or Madrid . People do change. I know this because even though i am very young ive already seen some of my friends change drastically. TBF Mourinho looks a humble man now. Also wanting to prove something to someone (in his case the world) is as big a motivation as any. And im clearly against signing Mourinho now . Only if he proves that he’s still got it , then we can have a talk. Also with age you get wisdom. He was a beast in the 2000s and if he can get even close to that you’ll have the special back .

We were the third highest scorers in the EPL last season and we would still end up among the top 4 goal scoring teams this season.

Our biggest problem is defensive and unless Ozil would help us in that aspect, we do not need him.

PS: Have lots of possession didn’t stop Wenger’s Arsenal from conceding ..

  41. Words on a Blog

For the last few seasons, Ozil has largely been an irrelevance to our attack, even if he bumps up our possession stats by a few percentage points.

Özil needs to rediscover his hunger for the game, which was lost once he’d signed his £350k/week gig.

Either he will decide to go, or (less probably) he buckles down, first in training, and then in matches, and shows he can make a difference.

But did our performances match our results? No.
And such a return is unsustainable. Think about the start of this season or the whole of last season.
One medium to long term injury to Auba would have completely changed our results. We are over-reliant on one player and are lucky to have him at his peak. Even I agree that Ozil with Ozil we might sometimes have to defend as a 10 man team and leaving Ozil out of such games unltil he shows willingness to defend is completely understandable. But completely ostracizing for personal reasons is mind boggling. Home to Bournemouth who were at their absolute worst in the first half and we mustered a total of 2 shots on target. 2 !!!. With Ceballos, Guen, Pepe, Kola, Saka and Auba all on the field. And in the second half we had 0. We would of easily lost the match had Callum Wilson taken his chances or Amn started above Chambers. The point being- Right now whatever we do we have a manager who’s got a track record of poor defensive stats. Even if he plays 3 DM we concede a large amount of shots that too on target. So at least against teams we can outscore there is a relevant argument to made for Ozil to be played. Some fans just downright hate Ozil for his languid behaviour. Its understandable but that doesn’t make him a bad player. And most of this stems of him being on a 350k contract. Would the fans react the same if Ozil was still on a 150k a week contract. I bet 90% would side with Ozil had it been the latter case. His contract has changed the perception of the fans , the media , pundits and ofc the coach with an inferiority complex.

    WoB
I dont see a way for Emery and Ozil to work anymore. I thought during preseason there was a chance. Ozil was pressing opponents in pre-season friendlies. The season rolls around and emery does his tinkering.

    Pierre,

So even though Mertesacker has confirmed that Ozil is lazy and doesn’t work hard in training you think Emery should forget that and pick Izil regardless?

What message does that give to the rest of the squad especially the youngsters?

And we don’t know for sure who’s behind the Ozil treatment especially considering the rumours last season that it was Raul.

At the end of the day Ozil’s output doesn’t justify the outlay. Him playing won’t help our defence and his best performances were a very long time ago.

Ozil, Xhaka and Mustafi all need to go before we can see real improvement as far as I’m concerned, along with bringing in a better head coach.

    Have I said that ….no .

Can you name one ..there is a long list to choose from.

Can you post one link here where Jose ridiculed Arsenal(Arsenal, not Wenger)?

And the things we have all said about Wenger, Jose never said a portion in 20. Does that make us less of Arsenal fans because we said shit about Wenger? They think yes on Untold but in reality the answer is no.

Grow above the sentiments, Jose is available and we need him.

Someone was talking about budget, Jose won the CL with Porto and Emery has blasted £200m in two summers already.

I know you hate this guy and I don’t love him either, but come on people, Jose is a winner and the last time people saw us as a real winner was 2004.

  64. Bamford10

    Pierre

“what aspect of our play have we improved without Ozil?”

Pressing. We press now, and we press well. This was not possible with Ozil, who is slow and lazy. Everyone works now, everyone runs, everyone presses, and everyone does so together, collectively. This was not possible with Ozil in the XI.

Further, though, what did Ozil actually bring to the side the last few years? Very, very little. Very little in the way of assists, very little in the way of goals. There is very little even to replace when it comes to “replacing Ozil”. Aside from Xhaka and Mustafi, no player has come in for more abuse here than Ozil and for good reason. He has been a complete ZERO of a player for years now, and this has little or nothing to do with Unai Emery.

  65. Marc

Why can’t a number of posters on here het their heads round the fact that Emery has not spent a penny at Arsenal. We do not operate as we did for so many years under Wenger where the manager did everything. Sanllehi ran this summer with a limited input from Edu who’s role will obviously increase from now on.

The manager will suggest positions he needs to strengthen and have input on some of the targets we pursue but this fallacy that he controls all transfers and contract negotiations is plain daft.

Two shots on goal with one goal is awesome efficiency.

  72. Gentlebris

Marc, I have no time for Ozil. That said, our play against Bournemouth was criminally pathetic. Bournemouth were creating chances after chances until the ref blew the whistle. It was sad to watch.

Right now, we have no creative organization. We have no creative individuals on the pitch. So our play is left over level.

When a team does not have a creative organization, a creative individual can make a big difference. Ceballos is not yet it. Ozil had every right to play against Bournemouth. Right now, Ozil is by far the most creative player we have. A coach who is worth his weight in potatoes would find a way to get something out of Ozil the moment he realized the team needed him, not develop a sad agenda against the player.

  73. Gentlebris

‘Two shots on goal with one goal is awesome efficiency.’

“Right now, Ozil is by far the most creative player we have.”

No, he’s not. He hasn’t been that player for years, and Ceballos is the better creative midfielder at the moment anyways.

“A coach who is worth his weight in potatoes would find a way to get something out of Ozil the moment he realized the team needed him, not develop a sad agenda against the player.”

Please. One, the team doesn’t need him. Two, Ozil has clearly been a lazy and spoiled twat in training, a part he has played many times before. Emery has given Ozil plenty of opportunities to play and to prove himself in the past. He doesn’t have an “agenda” against him; he’s just done with the twat, as is the club.

All this talk of “we need a CAM” will go away when we have proper overlapping fullbacks. Remind me who Liverpool’s creative midfielder is? Oh right, they don’t have one. Because if you play in a particular way — pressing, playing quickly in transition, and playing down the wings — you don’t need one.

“Exactly. And it will work even better when Tierney and Bellerin are the overlapping fullbacks.”

I do expect there to be improvement in the full back position with the return of those 2.

Who do you think is the best player to supply that clever ball inside the full back for our overlapping full backs to slide the ball across the face of goal .

Is it xhaka …no evidence of him playing that type of ball.

Is it Torreira….no evidence of him playing that type of ball.

    Is it Guendouzi…same

    Is it willock …..same

Is it Ceballos …a possibility but, as yet I haven’t seen that type of pass in his play .

Now take your mind back to the only league game that Ozil has played in , our 2nd goal was created with exactly the type of pass inside the full back that Bellerin and Tierney will crave once they are back in the side .

So what we have is 2 overlapping full backs that Ozil could slide in ALL DAY LONG, yet he wont even be on the pitch …

And what you will have is other players who will attempt that type of pass and they will get the weight of the pass all wrong , because it is not part of their game…

That type of pass is meat and drink to Ozil, he could play it with his eyes closed .

  77. azed

“Right now, Ozil is by far the most creative player we have. ”

Ozil had two assists in 24 EPL games last season playing with Aubameyang and Lacazette.

  78. Pierre

    Bamford
Have a look at our 2nd goal , the perfect pass for an overlapping full back, very similar to the recent watford goal …

We have 2 very exciting full backs and the manager will not play the one player who can play them in .

And let me add , this type of pass is not as easy as Ozil makes it look .

Fo maximum effect it needs to be perfectly timed with the perfect weight , a second too early or too late and the moment is lost.

Jose, with his knowledge , and contacts is a clearly well informed man.
Whoever he is aiming for, I would assume he knows things we do not about either us or Spurs or someone else
I would assume Spurs are more likely to lose Poch quicker than we dispense of Emery as things stand , Solskjaer is hanging by a thread, and we have an idea where they will look to replace, but as the article suggests, Spurs and Jose doesn’t sound quite right , though could say the same about Arsenal
Unless of course it is all a massive smokescreen about this league, and Jose will return to Real Madrid?
But, Interesting comments from Raul this eve that Emery is “expected” to make the top four, nothing new there , but interesting he said it. Implies the club could act if things are not going well by the New Year . I suspect a man like Jose doesn’t rate Emery one little bit, maybe that factors into his future plans.

We live in strange, strange times.

(Some / quite a lot?) of ManU fans want Wenger as their manager.

(Some / quite a lot?) of Arsenal fans want Mourinho as their manager.

Next: the fan campaign for Allardici to replace Pep at Man City? After all, Pep is underperforming by his standards – maybe he’s lost his sauce.

  82. Luteo Guenreira

His love for Ozil goes far beyond normal fandom. He’s likely tracked him since the player was a young child.

  83. Valentin

    Azed,

I do believe as well that he will be recalled in January as all his latest appearances are as right winger. He can do a job there but he is a right back not a right winger. However he has been rather impressing in generating chances and assists in both position.
The loan was strange as he had opportunities in the Championship but was send to a second tier German club.
Mind you, Bellerin loan to Watford was also a failure. He was considered not good enough for Watford in the championship and then the following year, he is Arsenal right back.

How could Mourinho possibly make Spurs the third best team in the league permanently when there’s a 90% chance he wouldn’t even manage to finish a third season without getting sacked?

And even if he somehow did make them a semi unstoppable third place machine when he was there, there’s no such thing as permanence in sport. Liverpool dominated the 80s and did very little in the 90s. Utd dominated the 90s and 2000s but have been wank ever since fergie left.

What can Jose possibly do in 3 years that will have a ‘permanent’ impact?

As well, Mourinho hasn’t operated under challenging circumstances since he left Porto in 2004. Is there any evidence that he as a pretty past in manager can perform the same magic he would need to from bygone times to make it work properly at spurs without also passing off the club and getting sacked?

As well isn’t our medium term plan to be competing for the league? I thought for us to get 4th and 3rd is just a short term means to an end rather than the be all and end all. Who cares about spurs coming 3rd if we aim for 1st?

  86. Nelson

For me, Mourinho is too confrontational. He will create more problems within the team. His last salary is almost double of that of Emery’s. He is not worth it.

  87. Wasi

    Azed.
You are saying the same thing over and over again.
Ozil doesn’t do enough defensively. And i Agree.
But whatever combination of players we put on the field now , is our defense going to improve? No its not . We have tried playing 3 DM and we are still very bad defensively. Maybe its down to the manager or the players . But what it does is hampers our chance creation .

‘Ozil had two assists in 24 EPL games last season playing with Aubameyang and Lacazette. The data doesn’t support your assessment Gentlebris.’

Well Ozil has thr most chances created for Arsenal under Emery. So the data does support the assessment.

‘‘Two shots on goal with one goal is awesome efficiency.’’

Man are you kidding? Or by mistake you handed your mobile to a child? So youd rather take 2 shots on goal and defend all night over take 10 shos on goal and attack all night. Looks like your inner Emery is coming out.

And TBF Ozil is the most creative player we have RN. Ceballos is like a Cazorla lite. He can break opposition’s press, best players in the middle and pull opposition defenders and midfielders out of position to make space for our attackers but he doesn’t have the consistency in the final ball. Sure he can provide one but not as consistently as Ozil. And in Tough Away games id always Ceballos over Ozil rn but home games or games we are primed to dominate its Definitely Ozil who should be starting.

  88. azed

Well Ozil has thr most chances created for Arsenal under Emery. So the data does support the assessment.

    Gentlebris

An assist is better than a chance created. Even Iwobi who is deemed not good enough had more assist than Ozil.

How does Ozil create so many chances with one of the best finishers in the world and yet have very little assist numbers?

  89. Chris

Ozil hasn’t been working hard enough to earn a place in the team.

That is quoted from the club itself.

Regardless of what he could potentially offer, or mitigating factors concerning Ozil himself , there are players who deserve their spot in front of him. This is absolutely the right thing to do.

I must say the attitude that the club presents these days is refreshing and a far cry from the Gazidis era of empty promises and ‘jam tomorrow’. There seems to be far more of a no nonsense mindset. We saw it with the Koscielny transfer also. It bodes well for the future.

  90. Normski

Basic statistics exist in football so absolute dummies can be involved in a conversation with no knowledge….yes azed, yes you blandford and obviously Marko.

Ozil has gone off the boil but he’s still out most creative and composed player that can be vital in a possession based team that keeps the ball and stops us and our goal getting peppered with shots.

I’m not comparing the two players but for a players influence on a team and the way it plays you need to look deeper that just assists.

Iniesta who was an amazing player and if you only judged him on his assist statistics he’d look like a very ordinary player but everyone knows he isnt. Only got more than 10 assists in one season playing in the best team the world has ever seen. He was the architect of so many goals without getting credit for an ‘assist’.

So pipe down trying by dismissing a player that could easily improve our bland and 1 dimensional attacking play.

You can still show him the door as his time is up here but why the fuck not use him until January?!

“Ozil has gone off the boil”

He simmered periodically at best then Jose didn’t wantt him any more.

He was a last minute panic buy for Wenger who had to play him to keep face when, that is, Ozil wasn’t pulling a sickie or the famous psychosomatic back injuries for tough home and most away games.

The fact he’s still here shows that no other club from Germany, Spain & Italy or even France wanted him as a free agent.

His last contract was a face saving, knee jerk keep-my-job signing by Gazidis who already knew he was leaving for Milan – similar to what he did by hiring Emery.

But by all means play the, according to the club, unfit Ozil and watch Groundhog Day unfold each time. Just same shit different day kind of lazy play where Ozil will be hauled off with him showing his usual petulance towards the club, fans and manager.

If you want my advice I’d find another player to champion.

See what you can do with Xhaka, I can wait to see your defense of him.

Really Bamford? Ozil all through his career has gathered a heavy reputation for being a player who finds opportunities for the attacking unit of a team. Now we just had two shots on goal in 95 minutes against Bournemouth and you think we don’t need a guy of Ozil’s reputation? Great great insight, my man.

‘What can Jose possibly do in 3 years that will have a ‘permanent’ impact?’

Nothing much I admit, China, the best he can do is win them the league in that time, like he did with Chelsea on more than one occasion, so nothing much.
Having admitted to that, let me say that what I meant by ‘permanent third best’ is actually undisputed third best over a decent period of time.
