Unai Emery and his troubling microaggressions

by .

I was going to write you out a Monday morning banger, then I realized we have two weeks until the next game… bad times ahead.

For blogging, it’s Dry January without anyone to listen to your empowering story.

Traffic wise, it’s like we’re Rolf Harris at next years Glastonbury.

The comments section becomes the part of Hyde Park corner where the soap-boxers get arrested for a excrement related offences (sorry guys, it’s true).

It’s so boring that sometimes I resort to courting attention by click-baiting certain fandoms with fake headlines.

OZIL COMPILATION THAT PROVES HE IS GOD

It’s desperate times.

So I’m saving all my prose up so I can spread it thinly enough to keep you interested.

In the meantime, I made a SOLO podcast for you to listen to. I figured people stomach ebooks for 19 hours at a time, you could easily do 35 minutes of me arguing with myself and ultimately resolving the differences.

Give it a go and I PROMISE that I will come back with real people for Wednesday morning. Also, know this… I finally worked out how to run Skype into my mixer. Gonna hit up some elite journos and industry people, only to be refused, and fall back on some failed AFTV personality from 2014.

Enjoy…

Good posts on the previous.

I posted this at the end of the last blog and then saw the “new post” comment. I’ve been browsing a few Un**ed and spuds blogs. At Un**Ed they seem evenly split between OGS and the players being to blame. Some blaming the Glazers.Spuds are all over the place but there seems to be a general consensus that can best be summarised with three words. Poch Knows Best.I did get a laugh from this though.“The question everyone wants an answer to is whether Pochettino is the man that can take Spurs back to their former glory. Do you think Emery will be sacked at the end of the season even if we make top 4. In a similar way to Bruce being replaced by Wenger way back when?

Bamford10

Kamp October 7, 2019 09:20:07 The rhetoric surrounding winning ugly and keeping a clean sheet is disappointing, but not at all surprising. Try looking at it from a positive point of view. We are slowly rediscovering old characteristics: winning ugly, scrapping, standing up for each other, not being bullied. You can’t look at an ugly win and say ‘where’s the flair,’ nor can you look at us thumping relegation fodder and complaining we are flat track bullies. Like it or not, Emery won this week and his detractors have lost. The future looks good off the back of the Europa… Read more »

Cheers Bamford, and nice to have you back. @ Un. Of course nothing you said in response to me is untrue…maybe a little unfair to lag some of it at Emery’s door. He needs to do a better job with his team sections and in game decisions, but make no mistake, he is improving this club from where Wenger left it. All this talk about sacking him is juvenile and counter productive. Do you think United Chelsea or Spuds would be talking about asking their manager if he were a point behind city? There is an element of the anti-wenger… Read more »

Grouvillegooner October 7, 2019 09:14:13 Some humble suggestions for Unai. Pick Chambers and Holding as the starting centre backs by the end of this month. Do not think that Ozil is the solution to creativity; he will create but there are so many things that he does not do and it has been like this from the day that he signed. Stop picking Xhaka. Stop defenders putting their hands behind their backs. Try to make your thoughts at press conferences more rational and less of a rambling confusion of thoughts. (This might lead to more coherent team selection.) Keep Pepe’s… Read more »

We all see the problems. Xhaka is a major reason for the ponderous play. However, the general intensity( as seen against Bournmouth yesterday) is lacking, which I would have expected Emery to have sorted out by now. As someone pointed out yesterday, Arsenal are one of the worst teams at looking vulnerable when other teams attack. This was always the case under Wenger but why can’t Emery fix this? The space that we gift centrally is often embarrassing. Closing down and tracking runs is easy to implement as long as the players understand and buy into it. Why though does… Read more »

If we look back to how emery got the job , we were told that he jumped in and stole away the position with his detailed file on each player , and how he would improve them – (we all read this story , how true it is I don’t know , but I can only go on what we were told) – now correct me if I’m wrong here , but do we think that he has improved the players like he said he would ? Edu, echoing my feelings. May is probably when AFC will say adiós but maybe a slight chance of a Freddie boost in the final straight.

Third in the league, a point behind city? There isn’t a pundit around who would have given us that by this stage. Hats off to Emery for getting it done with squad still missing major components.

Erm. No Bamford. Hats off to Aubameyang beacuse without him we’d be 13 points worse off already. And before you start it’s not emery who’s facilitating those goals it’s Aubameyang and his ability to sniff out goals whilst feeding off nothing but scraps

Biggles

With the squad we have, against that level of opposition and being at home, that should have been a massacre. However, we had Xhaka as DM and our decent DM on the bench until he came on to become… a winger? We had the chuckle brothers at CB and Kola at left back. So we ended up pretty turgid overall, but at least we won dirty and there have been plenty of times when we wouldn’t have in the past. Plus we managed to get 3 points the weekend that Spurs (HAHA), United (HAHA), Leicester and City (HAHAHAHA) all lost.… Read more »

Not Xhaka again. grrrrr. Xhaka is the classic case of technique over actual substance on the pitch. However much people moan about him he does have footballing technique. This would be appreciated by his coach and more than enough fellow players especially on the training pitch. It’s just that this technique doesn’t add up to a great deal on the pitch and added to this poor off the ball attributes and suspect character and temperament. Xhaka is a hangover of the Arsene Wenger times and which Emery is refusing to eradict. Those that were so happy with the departure of… Read more »

I can’t argue about being third on the league table and a point behind City who are second. . If I was told Arsenal will be third by week 8 at the beginning of the season, I would have taken it. I would rather win playing ‘ugly’ than lose or draw playing beautiful football like we use to do and found ourselves in Europa. Emery was appointed to win. He is doing just that. Just win. What a shame we are too bang average to see off 2 teams in crisis like Man U and the spuds 4 points dropped.

Such a dishonest thing to say the victories are because of Auba because he’s feeding off scraps, plenty to criticize the manager with but don’t throw common sense out the door when you do that, makes you sound like a loony…….Oh, Van persie was feeding of scraps the season he won the golden boot because the quality behind him and the football we played that season was borderline atrocious

Steveyg87

Morning you miserable people, still have a good old moan about Emery? Well, good luck with that. The fans attending the games and the board clearly don’t read the shite posted on here, thank god for that

“If I was told Arsenal will be third by week 8 at the beginning of the season, I would have taken it.” If you were told United and Spurs are in a relegation battle you would have scratched out your ears. And if you are objective about it, we could very well join them given the football that’s on offer. If we win while being outplayed, it simply means we are lucky. Don’t confuse a Mourinho style defense with what we have here. A Mourinho play book concedes possession statistically without conceding space in a very coherent manner. You can… Read more »

In fairness to Emery, he has shown that he is capable of quick learning this season. These are some positives from the first 8 games. -He’s shown loyalty to Chambers and dropped AMN from that RB position. Bellerin would have to work very hard to dislodge Chambers. -He figured Ozil out and is Standing his ground. -He has dealt with Saka and Martinelli quite well, showing that he values meritocracy. -He’s taken risks with Willock, he’s show he trust youth. -He’s been patient with Pepe and pulling him out yesterday sent a message, a tough but necessary one- form still… Read more »

Maybe it is fair to say that without Rvp we would have been in a similar position but Walcott was electric on the right that season while the ox was offering some quality showings too along with rosicky.

We have nobody supporting Aubameyang this season. He’s in his own. The XG tells its own story. We are creatively bankrupt this season like never before in the previous 24 years

It’s disingenuous to claim that we’re it not for Aubameyang emery would be in big big trouble

I’ll say this on a positive note. It CAN get better this season. The fact that we haven’t clicked could mean that when we do we will already have gone though a shitty adjustment period and came out with a decent points total Tut when laca comes back and Pepe finds his feet with hector and Tierney adding another dimension going forward that we are set to find our groove still. Was our squad good enough to beat Leicester or Wolves or Palace in the final run in?” A simple yes or no answer would oversimplify the matter, so I’m not going to be doing that. One could argue that Aubameyang is simply doing the job he is paid to do, put the ball in the net and win games for us. He’s not the first striker to bail his team out and won’t be the last.

It’s a pity there’s a subset of supporters who whinge after we’ve won a game and are just 1 point behind City after almost a quarter of the season played. Spurs and Utd both embarrassing themselves isn’t met with the glee it deserves. Emery is here until the summer barring a total capitulation in the league. siddharth14

Dark Hei, very well put. This is not a moan about Emery but some people in here really need to understand the term, ‘wining ugly’. I know this is a hypothetical scenario but if Bournemouth had taken one of their chances, it might have been a different outcome. Because the moment we concede, we are in a crisis mode at full throttle.

Like i said earlier, i’d rather we finish top 4 and then get a new Manager in summer then see Arsenal implode under Emery with even more damage in the short term.

Valentin

When we replaced Wenger, the idea was to remove the power from the manager and split it into a DoF who would focus on the long term and a headcoach who would take care of the short term. The headcoach concentrates on making the team function better and improve both players and results. 1 year later, we can assess the aituation. Objectively we don’t play better. The football is as bland and boring than during Wenger latter years. The results have been marginally better over 38 games, but with a better squad and better headcoach should have been much better.… Read more »

I hate to see it but the notion that Emery hasnt improved certain players is utterly wrong . Xhaka in the past seasons was a complete liability like he is now + mentally unstable. He would pick up yellows on a weekly basis and reds on a monthly. “We need to act now, because next summer we could be in competition with lots of clubs such as Spurs and ManUtd for the same decent coaches”

Lest i be accused of lying and needing to learn English later, isn’t the above Valentin calling for the immediate (now means immediate) sacking of a manager who finished two points off third last season and has only lost one game this season?

Receding Hairline

” Unfortunately, as long as we are in the top 4 race and in the EL, Emery will still be in charge. More likely that he gets a contract extension than being relieved of his duties.”

Nothing unfortunate about being in the top four race and a good run in Europe for true fans of any football team…spare me the bigger picture nonsense.

siddharth14

Dream10, even i’m not a fan of Emery but being in Top 4 should be celebrated and enjoyed even though it might mean Emery gets to complete his tenure. Why does Emery need to go?

We had 2 shots yesterday. We gave Aubameyang, one of the best players in the world in current form, next to no service.

Emery blamed the lethargic performance on the lack of experience… but then replaced Pépé with Martinelli.

Edumifavor
Good analysis. Now to explain the player dossiers, it is said he got the details from Arteta ( whom he fortunately backstabbed). But like the kid who passed copying during examinations, Emery too proved a dud he is. Mediocre, not bad , thank God for small mercies.

S Asoa

About Emery going through his contract, considering the turmoil among the other top 4 Contenders, Arsenal might or might not get the TRO4PHY . Keeping him on we save about 3.6 million payout, but are gambling on the CL bonanza. There is Allegri available, or we could prise Nagelsmann or Nuno Espírito Santo any of which would definitely ensure we get into Champions League and the pot of money.
Bad management to persist with the lucky failure in the hope luck holds.

Valentin

Why do you think Özil and Mustafi decided to stay around despite being told to leave? It’s simple they think that they can outlast him. Nobody seriously think that Emery’s extension will be taken. So the argument that he would be undermined by either removing him now or actively searching for his successor is a fallacy. Leeds, I’m happy for Xhaka to have a newborn. That being said, his partner surely could have waited until after the international break. Now his paternity leave starts which will mean he will miss games for Switzerland rather than for us. Hasn’t made my day, but best wishes all the same.

Marc

The way the team is performing at the moment it’s unlikely that Emery will get an extension at the end of the season even if we do qualify for CL next season.

It would take something quite extraordinary for him to be sacked mid season but as it stands I can’t see him being in the dugout for the first match of next season.

Jim Lahey

“Why do you think Özil and Mustafi decided to stay around despite being told to leave? It’s simple they think that they can outlast him.”

…. Its because they are both on more money at Arsenal than they will ever be paid again. No club will ever match their current wages.

Leedsgunner

I agree that Raul and Edu will keep it simple. If we get too 4, Emery’s contract will be extended.
The upper management may think I they have bigger issues than just manager. We need 2 more transfer windows like the last one .
Do they want to win the league or just get too 4? , that’s what determines the next choice of manager

Graham62

Tottenham in free fall , Man Utd playing shite, Man City looking vulnerable, Chelski in transition and Arsenal doing brilliantly.

If only.

The issues are clear to us all and as long as Emery persists with his confusing methods and illogical player favouritism, we will never be in a good place.

Bob N16

I hope he does Leeds but if he has any sense he will realise that if the midfield clicks without him, at a time when our back line will be improved, he could lose his place in the starting line up.

Valentin

Jim, The other clubs do not have to pay their full salary. Arsenal could organise a deal that would be financially neutral to him. Özil is on 350k a week for the next two years, most club would still be willing to take him on a free for 100kpw~150kpw. By subsidising the rest Arsenal would still save 200kpw for 2 years or the equivalent of 21 millions. The same with Mustafi. The reasons why such thing did not happen is because either Arsenal refused to subsidised such a deal or because the players refused to move. Sanchez is on more… Read more »

Last year – As a reactive coach, Emery was relatively inexperienced in terms of his detailed knowledge of the style and traits of of PL opponents, and the rigours of no Christmas break etc. – Notwithstanding his detailed “dossier” that he presented at his job interview he wasn’t fully up to speed on what his own players were and weren’t capable of. – he had a pretty shitty and unbalanced squad, definitely (no matter what Pedro said at the time) not “top4” – partly because of the above, and his consequent lack of trust of “squad” players, and partly because… Read more »

Emery’s contract will absolutely not be renewed. This isn’t the clueless Gazidis show any longer. How could anyone have watch Arsenal this season and not ha e serious doubts about Emery. Graham62,

One thing to keep a lookout for, is if the “next 11/Europa-Carabao team” continue to outperform the “first 11” in terms of style and results, then more and more of them will start playing in the premier league. Already two of them (Tierney and Holding) are likely to be shoe-ins after the inter lull. Belle ring and Willock are not too far behind….

Despite the admittedly poor quality of our play in the EPL I’m looking forward to the next round of matches after the interllil.

Emery will remain in place only to the end of the season. No way, he coaches this team next year.

Raptora, During MOTD2, Martin Keown shown that Eddie Howe adjusted his formations to suddenly attack by the wings. Suddenly we could not press higher without being exposed on the outside. The normal reaction should have been either to change our approach to defending or change our offensive play to exploit the space left by them. Emery did neither. Up to now, Pepe didn’t get much help from his teammates. Emery either selects a midfield with Xhaka as DM and Guen and Torr as CM or like last game, Xhaka and Guen as DM and Ceballos as CM. When Torr is playing as CM, he is more interested in advancing inside the penalty area. He is not exchanging any passes with Pepe. When Ceballos is playing as CM, he operates on the left side.
