Unai Emery has started taking press conferences to the same levels Arsene Wenger did towards the end, they’re almost not worth paying attention to.
We want to find balance.
We want to control games.
We want to defend.
It’s a little harder to fathom the true message due to the language issues, but the manager to his credit seems mostly uninterested in what outsiders think of him.
The most interesting part was his messaging was around the captains’ armband.
The vote gives me this information and the teammates decided that vote gives him confidence. Now the big thing is that we are going to work individually and collectively to be strong, and to show our supporters our way and how we can be strong with every player and our captains. I have big confidence and trust in every player, the captain and not the captain, because I think now in the dressing room we have a very big spirit.
Translation: The players voted for it so stfu.

The manager alluded to the slow start this season being down to messy transfer window. In fairness to him, that is an acceptable excuse. In the post WE BOUGHT PLAYERS hedonism, we quickly forgot that two weeks before fans were posting videos of themselves lambasting the club for inaction and selfishness. Playing devils EKB here, Raul didn’t bring the milkshake to the yard early enough. Emery could also say that some of the player exits were late and out of his hands. Monreal would have made a difference to the leadership struggles and the lack of a leftback. Mikhi might… I mean… he… Emery didn’t want him axed.
The allusions would hold more weight if our grim performances didn’t closely ape what we saw in the backend of last season, but hey, let’s roll with what the manager thinks and look for the positives.
We’re heading into a much simpler set of games. They’re not easy, but they are a lot more do-able than some of the challenges we’ve faced up to over the last 10 games.
What we are all hoping for today is this: Emery has realised he has good enough players to offer up a more protagonistic approach to the game.

Bournemouth sit 1 point behind us in 11th place. Statistically, they are having a poor season in the same way we are. They’ve been extremely open, racking up an average of 16.9 shots per game… not as bad as us, with 18. On the attacking front, they average 10.7 shots a game, with a very low 4.3 on target. They’ve actually managed 1 more goal than us, but boast the same goal difference as us with +1.
In short, they’re playing like a team that’s going to find themselves in a relegation battle this season. I mean, from an xG standpoint, so are we. We’re 15th for xPts so far this season, they’re 19th. The main difference for Arsenal is we have great players, we’ve played some tough teams on paper, we’re about to hit an easy run. Bournemouth’s correction could spell trouble.
Based on the above and the 2.5 good performances we’ve seen over the last week, it would be nice to expect a walk in the park, but we know the manager will level in with some changes that’ll make things difficult for himself. Xhaka is the captain so he’ll start, Matteo is a leader amongst men, and the coach has shown a reticence to play Ceballos or Willock, so we could see LT back in. 3 holding midfielders starting in slightly incorrect positions has been the story of our bad games this season, I truly hope someone has pointed that out in the video analysis room.
That said, even with our blandest midfield on show, I have my doubts a team that doesn’t press will give us too many problems. Xhaka with space is a different beast, so are most of our players, could even be a good chance for Ceballos to find his sea-legs.
I think most of the joy we’ll be having tomorrow is in the final third – if Emery can find the right balance to release his speed demons. This should be a day for Pepe to shine. I’d love to see Saka back out on the right starting again, he’s been electric in every game, I see no reason to rest him.
There’s also the added the deliciousness of Martinelli. The manager had mixed feelings on his true position (of course he would).
‘In pre-season he played in different positions, above all he preferred to play as a left-winger but he can also play as a right-winger.’
‘I’m using him as a striker because he played there in Brazil. It’s not the best position for him but the first thing in his mind is to help us.’
Emery has finally stumbled into a happy mistake if he thinks striker isn’t the lads best position, but either way, it’s great to know the player is so versatile. Dividing up the season on the left between him and Saka/Reiss is exciting… being the back-up to Pepe also makes sense. In the meantime, if Arsenal go 3-0 up at halftime, take Auba off and put him through the middle.
I’m trying to work out who Martinellis is like as a player. He has elements on Robin Van Persie about him. The Dutchman was so arrogant at Feyenoord in his early days that he’d pinch freekicks from senior players. They have similar no-nonsense attitudes on the pitch and there seems a definite desire to strike from distance and dance with the ball. Robin also had a stint out wide in his early days for Holland. Dare I say… I think some of his footwork has a touch of Bobby P about it. He’s obviously not flatfooted, but he’s light on his feet and can deliver a ball.
Cannot wait for him to discover Nando’s, dial-in hookers and Celta Vigo on loan…
Just kidding, this kid looks the real deal. Let’s hope Emery trusts him in the big games.

How Emery cannot see the wood for the trees is beyond me. This defeatist, boring pragmatic approach to the league playing such a cautious line up is baffling. Pedro As I posted earlier and you seem to agree Arsenal have not played well in the EPL this season, but we are still unbeaten in six out of seven of games in league. The key to Arsenal’s further progression is to solidify our defence by bringing into team as soon as possible Bellerin and Tierney. Martinelli reminds me of TH with his speed, Liam Brady with his vision and Freddie Ljungberg with his guile. If he fulfills himself to the degree of any of them then we should be pleased. Setting him up as the next messiah will only lead to disappointment.
Groove. Ronaldo’s athleticism seemed to increase with time. Martinelli is a beast at just 18. I think he has that power + speed combo that Ronaldo has. Reckon he may be quicker than Auba. Leicester were primed to give a scare at Anfield and the did . We were primed to easily go down at Anfield so we did. Wonder if he had got Soyuncu instead of Sokratis last summer. Could have been a game changer
Also Maddison looks a baller. Could be a nice replacement for Ozil/Ceballos. But Leicester will surely make us pay 60m+ for him if we do go down that road.
The last two games between Arsenal and Bournemouth at the Emirates demonstrated how the later are incapable of stopping Ozil. This is the type of game in which he thrives and brings the best out of the strikers. He is the most creative player in the team and ought to be playing.

Suarez and Son comparisons stylistically make most sense to me. Very early for the lad. I think the Ronaldo comparison is a bit out there.
Suarez, in that what strikes most about Martinelli is both the quality and quantity of his movement both off the ball offensively and in the intelligent pressing game, he appears to already have.

One good performance and Martinelli has drawn comparisons to Ronaldo, Pires, Anelka, Suarez, Thierry, Son and Parsie. Emirates is getting worried Real and Barca might snatch him from ☺️
Suarez is a good comparison. He’s sharp. I’m surprised he sees himself as a winger, but then, we only saw 10 minutes of that. From a career point of view, you’re going to get a whole lot more, glory, money etc playing in front of goal, than stuck out on the wing. Witness Thierry Henry.
Regarding our stodgy and largely ineffective midfield, the problem starts as soon as you select Xhaka. He literally throws everything out of sync. Unfortunately, it looks like he is the first name on the team sheet. I’m surprised Emery can’t see this.

UFGN, top four would be a satisfactory finish. I don’t believe that will automatically ensure Emery is given an extension though. However, if he does settle on a winning formula and the midweek fluency is replicated in the league then who knows? Once the season is over regardless of if we get top 4 or not, l think we should thank Unai and hand him his p45, for me it’s evident that he’s not the level we need. I tend agree with CC, of course there is always the debate around whether the squad’s weakness would have hampered any coach last season but there has been no evidence of a clear, discernible way of playing. This season, we’re still bedding in new players, be they new to the club or the youngsters coming through. Most of us realised that it wouldn’t be until mid October before we would see our true first eleven this season. Now he has more options in the midfield (still nit enough) yet he keeps persisting with the least suitable midfielder as the lynchpin of the buildup.
There are still mitigating factors to consider before criticizing Emery no doubt but he’s the author of his own misfortune.
I think you defend Emery instinctively because you perceive that their are ulterior motives behind some of the vicious criticism he’s gotten here.

There was a good player in there with bendtner but his off the field activities were his down fall.
Martinelli is a striker, but he is highly versatile. At Ituano, he was apparently played on the left, on the right, through the center and as a #10. If Pepe continues to struggle, I think Emery should consider playing Martinelli on the right. Regardless of where he plays, he should be in the PL starting XI, IMO.
I know the way I felt about Wenger. At the end the sight of his face made me do a head-turn, maybe it was over-familiarity.
That said, we need to approach Emery on his own merits. Defending him just because the critics were shamelessly defending Wenger’s incompetence years ago isn’t the way to go.

Except that he did not. He was in the official U21 picture and considered an U21 player, before being send back to the senior team. Until a few weeks ago, he was marked as an U21 player on the official Arsenal web site. Per in an Arsenal media interview stated that the academy staff realised pretty quickly he was too good for the U23 reserve. Most likely Edu had a word, and now Emery is just reaping the benefit.
Up4 I don’t see how structural changes at the club influence Emery to the point of hindering his performance. The nomination of Per as head of the academy was already acted before Raul and Vinay got their promotion. Progress is not linear, but it also does not huge leap at the same time for every players. Be great to find a way to accommodate both Saka and Martinelli in the starting line up today. That might be what Emery’s LW/RW comments were about. Martinelli should have enough in him to give it his all for 60 minutes, that way we can give Pepe 30 minutes and hopefully he looks more interested knowing he can give it his all for a shorter amount of time against a tired EPL defence. Valentine, Tr7, Do you think per taking over the academy just flicked a switch, and boom bang its a conveyor belt of ready to go youngsters. Maybe saka and willock were ready to come straight in at the start of last season but I doubt it. Those two didn’t solve our defensive midfielder problems or our defence did it? Where are those youngsters, the academy wasn’t ready last season, now it is. Emery played guendouzi and holding last year until holding was injured.
