Let’s League Cup party like it was 2008!

Unai Emery needed a performance, he wasn’t going to care where it came from, even if it was against a team in the Championship.

Boy did he land one… for the first time this season, everything went right and he left the fans electrified about the possibilities.

We saw some new players, namely Keiran Tierney and Gabriel Martinelli.

We saw some, ‘like a new signing’ players, step forward Hector Bellerin.

We saw some form return. Hello Ozil and Reiss.

We saw some sustained performances. Saka, Chambers and Willock.

We destroyed Nottingham Forest, even if it did take a while to make things happen.

Some points I’d like to make.

Saka:

Love the kid. What a player. He is so adept at making space. He’s aggressive, hungry to move the ball forward and he has no fear when it comes to that final decision. What a great player we have on our hands. Read that he’s a straight A’s student as well. I like that, good at sport and elite in the classroom.

Mesut Ozil:

The player that has offered us next to nothing for the last 3 years shows up against a Championship side and people are levelling criticism at the manager. Please. That’s too much. Sure, Emery isn’t an elite manager of egos, but Ozil has been dropping tame performances for us for years (Germany / and for Wenger). One good game against Leicester or Forest doesn’t change the equation for Emery… you cannot rely on him. He’s not built for the modern world. He’s antiquated. He’s an expensive quarterback in a world that needs more rounded creators. He gives us something special that we lack, but not often enough. Move on.

Martinelli:

What a fun player. He’s everything you want in a Brazilian. Audacious, arrogant, fearless and deadly. His first goal was a work of art. I think it was a floated ball from Reiss to the right, BIG CAL volleyed the ball across goal where the Brazilian wunderkind put his head on it like peak Kevin Davies. What a goal. The late strike where he smashed it into the top corner was super special as well. He’s a livewire, could he be the most exciting youth striker since Anelka? Maybe…

Tierney:

Calls for him to start against United are early, but all the signs are that he’s going to be a beast of a player for us. He’s extremely fast, he has great delivery and I think he has something very special about him. Fans are going to worship him, I just hope Emery resists the urge to blood him too early.

Chambers and Holding:

Chambers delivery and general production in the last two games have been great. I’m not sure about him as a right-back, but he does have some silk under pressure. Seems like a top guy, too handsome to play next to Sokratis, but would definitely like to see more of him if he can cut out the errors. Also great to see Rob Holding back and on the score sheet, another young player that is a leader, another player we’ve greatly missed.

Key takeaway for the squad:

Whatever my thoughts on the manager, I think we can all agree that the squad is much more exciting this season. I love all the new additions and I think the kids are fantastic. We have to support them, they’ll all have ups and downs, but at least there’s hope this year. This feels special. It’s great to feel excited about the majority of the players who might start. Big round of applause to Freddie and Per on the youth, big hat tip to Raul and Edu for the signings, big round of applause for Emery playing them.

Key takeaway for Emery:

It’s looking very good for Emery now. He has a pretty straightforward run until mid-December. We should rack up more than enough points to be sitting comfortably in the top 4 by then. We’ll be top in Europe. I think we could see a similar run to the one we had last year if we can take down United on Monday.

Over the Unai.

See you in the comments. x

I beat you to the game today DM.

Lol Bankz, big yourself up all you want but it was Raptora who you can thank today 🙂

Really enjoyed the game last night – been a while since I’ve been able to say that! Was really excited to see Martinelli and he didn’t disappoint. As for our defence, it goes without saying that Bellerin, Holding and Tierney should be 3 of our 4 guaranteed starters, with that second CB spot up for grabs.

Still can’t believe our luck in getting so much money for Iwobi! I don’t like putting a lot of pressure on kids after a few games, but Saka genuinely already looks better than him — and CERTAINLY no worse!

raptora

True that. It was a lucky win you smug mofo!

Stuart Hill

I swear you must be bipolar – if we lost against Villa you’d be calling for Emery to go now, flipping from one extreme to the other on the basis of a result or two is not analysis.

Sid

Tierney should start against UTD in a 433 then sub him and play 352 with tank hopefully we are ahead by then

raptora

Read people saying it’s only Forest. Yeah, tell that to spuds fans that it was only Colchester.

Pierre

What Emery should take most out of the game is the midfield performance of Torreira and how comfortable he looked at the base of midfield. Playing alongside Willock , they looked a good partnership, of course the opposition should be taken into account as they were powderpuff up front I felt sorry for the many forest fans who were at the game who paid good money to see their team just surrender to Arsenal. No negatives at all in the game, .Martinelli couldn’t wish for a better full debut, he worked very hard and deserved his little bit of fortune… Read more »

Stuart,

You’re talking shit.

Pedro hasn’t flipped at all. He said Emery isn’t elite and has stuck to his guns on Emery out since about this time last season.

“Whatever my thoughts on the manager, I think we can all agree that the squad is much more exciting this season.”

Praising the squad like we all are isn’t flipping on the manager, and it certainly isn’t bipolar either.

Graham62

Congrats to Emery but,as I said last night, I hope he doesn’t revert back to type.

GillespieRoadNoMore

Great game last night, pity there were so many empty seats. Tierney and Martinelli both impressed, great to see Holding back in the team, Chambers also looks much better for having been out on loan. Ozil was pretty anonymous and his glacier like pace when subbed was pretty pathetic, the fans don’t pay to see an overpaid Prima Donna take so long to leave the pitch, GROW UP! By my reckoning he earned about £30 in the time it took him to leave, the cleaners and stewards are probably lucky to get that for their evenings work, shameful. Glad that… Read more »

Good post, Pedro. I agree that things are looking brighter, but I think you’ll agree that Emery needs to get his selections right going forward. Let’s hope he does.

I just re-watched the match highlights again and for the life of me i cannot see the huge deflection on Martinelli’s second goal. Can anyone else beside Pierre see this?

Leedsgunner

“It’s looking very good for Emery now. He has a pretty straightforward run until mid-December. We should rack up more than enough points to be sitting comfortably in the top 4 by then. ” We had a similar run in with 10 games to go in the EPL and Emery completely fumbled it. Nothing is certain with this side because the midfield general he chooses to play (Xhaka) is not good enough for the EPL and the CB pairing he chooses (Sokratis and Luiz) are mistake prone. Everyone being fit and in form I suggest our strongest line up United… Read more »

Leave Ozil alone
What’s done is done. He has to just see out his contract and go anywhere he wishes.
The manager has accepted him for who he is and is definitely not relying on him. He’s just another player now.

Dissenter

Was there even a deflection for Martinelli’d second goal?
If it existed, it would have been very minimal. The ball went where it was directed – in the far corner.
We’ve gone from having no wing players to suddenly having a plethora of young players who can play on the wings.

Bamford10

Leeds

I like that that XI — although it should have two holding mid’s rather than one — but Emery cast some doubt on whether Bellerin will start on Monday. He said they would need to consult with the doctors, first and foremost.

bennydevito

Pierre,

The slightest of touches, it wasn’t going wide and wasn’t lucky at.

You’re just miffed because you were saying Martinelli isn’t a striker when he clearly is and you have a bee in your bonnet about Nketiah’s decision to go on loan.

Get over it.

Freddie Ljungberg

RH

I’ve watched Martinellis goal multiple times and from every camera angle available, think that deflection only exist if you have an agenda against loaning out Nketiah and has made a huge point in mentioning it every single day. Yesterday he was trying to make out that his first goal was also lucky and hit his shoulder, smh.

In short, Pierre is a trolling cunt.

James wood

Yes Mustafi certainly looked better playing in that
defence last night.?
Sockratis far to Industrial.?
Luiz sub material.
But then again it was only a poor NF side.
But good to see us doing them over without fuss.

Savage

Only one camera angle shows the deflection – it’s definitely huge. Even in the other shots you still feel like there’s something not quite right about the shape.

That takes nothing away from the goal – we were too shot-shy under Wenger, and I’m pleased to see the kids having a crack when they get a chance, because anything can happen. I just prefer a riskier approach to attack – play the cards you’re dealt.

Bamford10

If Bellerin can’t start on Monday, who would you start at RB: Chambers, Mustafi or AMN?

Dissenter

I suspect that Emery r6 will take PapSok, Kolasinac and David Luiz put of the line of, fire at Old Trafford.
He needs to also bench Xhaka for a while as well, enough to show him what he’s expecting from a midfield.
Emery needs to show that he’s capable of dropping multiple ‘starters’.He needs to pick the right team from the whet-go.
United are on the ropes right now, even a draw may be a poor result in these circumstances.

Savage

AMN is banned right?

Guns of Hackney

Emery doesn’t have the sauce to try something different against yoo night Ed.

Sauce less.

Graham62

Oh Mesut, why do you bother? There is no excuse for this ongoing negativity that exudes from you everytime you put on an Arsenal shirt. I know, you feel you’ve been treated unfairly and that life in general is pretty bad. You don’t like or rate Emery, I get it, I really do. The thing is why the fudge should I,as an Arsenal fan, have sympathy for someone who clearly has no comprehension of how he comes across and doesn’t give a shite about anyone except himself? You are a disgrace and the sooner you leave my club the better… Read more »

Sohara

Such a wonderful game to be at. I loved the way that all our three coaches on the bench came forward to coach their respective areas, Freddie was up coaching the youngsters during the breaks in play , especially Saka . Freddie has a lot to do with getting these young guns playing like this, good on Emery for letting him be involved. If the deflection was ‘huge’, then surely that takes away a lot from the goal because it would be a fluke.
It would be a ball headed for the corner flag being deflected into the top corner.

Where is the Willock love?

The kid was simply marvellous yesterday and did everything you could wish for from your midfielder.

He defended, tracked runners, covered his teammates, attacked when he saw an opportunity, SCORED, and dictated the play.

Such an exciting prospect.

Emiratesstroller

Pedro

One interesting stat, which should not be ignored.

Chambers has started in three games this season and on each occasion Arsenal have not conceded a goal.

Okay two of those games were in Cups, but when you factor in that we have conceded 10 goals in the other 5 games where he did not play there is
surely a case for his inclusion in the team unless we have on books a replacement who is better.

HillWood

Some good performances but Forrest looked like they couldn’t wait to be out of the Carabau Cup
Tierney looked good let’s hope he can stay fit

Receding Hairline

Savage you may need to check what the term huge deflection means in football

A huge deflection will be obvious to all and would not be up for debate, a huge deflection will be mentioned in every match report, a huge deflection will not require one camera angle as you put it to be seen

Dissenter

AMN is not banned but don’t expect him back soon [if Emery is truly capable of learning]
He served out his suspension for the carabao cup game already.
Chambers plays the position better, even though he too may struggle against lacy wingers. He crosses the ball better and is more focused on the game.
I’ve never seen a young player display so much cool indifference and lack of motivation.

Still feeling positive this morning after that game. The only thing worrying me is you know that our ‘first choice’ players will be put back in for Monday. Watch the midfield look like a slower, less dynamic, non effective area as soon as he drops Xhaka back in. The other frustration is that we may still need to wait for our full backs but we’ve got a glimpse of what our side could be like with them. Emery will not have the guts to play some of the youngsters.

Chambers is proving to be a very versatile player he seems to be comfortable with our younger players..
Martinez has to on the bench.

If only one camera angle got the deflection…then it can’t be considered a ‘huge’ deflection, can it.
A ‘huge’.deflection is like an intended cross that changes direction altogether or loops over the goalie.
That will be obvious from several camera angles.

Freddie Ljungberg

Pierre

nope, just ones with massive agendas, the first goal hit his shoulder too right?

Chambers may not be the solution to our defensive problems, but no-one should ignore the fact that we have not conceded a goal in any of the games he has played.

I think that our best defensive options when all players are match fit could be
Bellerin, Chambers, Holding and Tierney. They provide better defensive discipline and above all good communication.

Martinelli second goal may have been lucky as some have said the shot was not goal bound and deflection made it loop into the top corner. However he deserved it for the work he did in harassing the defenders and his willingness to have a crack rather than trying to recycle the ball backward. However before we compare him to Anelka, I must admit that his holdup play was not up to par with the rest of his performance. I don’t disagree
I would just ask that a chastened Mustafi he added to the rotating pool of central defenders.
There’s nothing I’ve see of David Luiz or PapSok to justify keeping them as starters.. They have made Mustafi into a harshly judged scapegoat.

Marko

Another one. It was goal bound it took a slight deflection there’s no way they’ll take the goal away from him.

Up 4 grabs now

Fantastic performance last night, yes it was a powder puff forest side, but a few years ago that would have been a narrow 1-0 victory. I would definitely start with holding Tierney and chambers at old toilet. Even if Tierney can’t do the full 90 minutes you can bring kola on for a 20 minute spell. His passing and pace was top draw last night, and importantly his crossing was into different areas of the penalty box not the same spot which confused forests defence. Nice cameo from bellerin, willock was excellent as well and him and torriea linked well.… Read more »

Martinelli doesn’t have Anelka’s build to begin with. Anelka was precocious regarding his physical development. He had a man’s body by the time we signed him at the age of 17 y/o.
Martinelli looks like he’s till going to grow some and still needs to bulk up in the gymn.

Mustafi played okay last season UNTIL injuries to Holding and Bellerin and the INTRODUCTION of Koscielny.

Mustafi is not the most intelligent footballer on the planet, but I still think that
he is better than Sokratis and playing alongside Bellerin or Chambers and Holding might improve his performance.

Leedsgunner

Our first team is very much playing like a cup team in the EPL and our Cup team is playing like how our first team should play… Shouldn’t be surprised really because due to long term injuries our first team has been played with what effectively have been our second string players for far too long. If we relegate AMN, Sokratis, Luiz and Xhaka to the bench our team automatically has more structure and pace in defence and midfield. “the ball went where he wanted it.”

The crux of the matter

Hence talk of a dubious goal panel or heading to row z is trolling. Maybe the keeper would have saved it but his shot was on target and he intended to aim for the top corner

Valentin

Dissenter, A ‘huge’.deflection is like an intended cross that changes direction altogether or loops over the goalie. That will be obvious from several camera angles. Not necessarily, if a deflection change the angle of a shot but not it’s direction, in some cases it can be observed only from one angle. If the ball hit the trailing leg of a defender and loop over a goal keeper, the deflection is not visible from behind. Nor from behind the goalkeeper. It can be viewed only from the side. Its obvious that when a professional academy trained footballer, cuts across goal and sets their body shape in that particular manner…they are aiming for the top corner.

Pierre you also said that his first goal went in off his shoulder last night. Sad prick that you are it’s easy enough to see what you’re getting at.

Also worth noting that the goals Martinelli scored last night are the kind of goals Nketiah could only dream of. Outside of the box and a contested header not a tap in in sight

It seems you have a different definition of ‘huge’.
If it’s huge, it will be so obvious that we won’t be having this conversation. It won’t only be apparent on one camera angle.

‘Huge’ deflection is as clear at the light of day, like phallic sizes I must say.

Pierre

Valentin
“I have not seen any replay from multiple angles, so I can’t judge, but my initial reaction was that the overal trajectory was strange and that it must have hit somebody on its way.
That does not detract from Martinelli overall performance which was very good. However it must be put into the context that it was against a Second tier reserve team. Nottingham Forest did not play their best team either. Their best striker nor their best defenders were kept on the bench in view of their Friday evening Championship game against Stoke.”

The good news is that we have an experienced forward line in Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepe, which could end up being one of the best in EPL.

Also we have young players coming through the system such as Saka, Martinelli,Nelson, Balogun and Nketiah who will potentially with experience
become top class players in their own right.

Forwards are generally the most expensive transfers and if we can avoid spending money in that department the club can devote its transfer resources in the future on our midfield and defence which are still below par.

Paulinho

If you look at the Forest Keeper he moves to his left, and then half-way through the shot he can realises the ball has changed the trajectory, and he’s got no chance.

Nope still haven’t seen it nor noticed it ..nor did i notice any strange trajectory on the ball. I saw a kid aiming for the top corner who found the top corner but i am open minded enough to consider they might have been a slight deflection not a huge one nor was the ball heading out of play

As for Nottingham forest not playing their strongest team well neither did we on paper, those were the reserves and the returnees for long term injury layoffs.

Leedsgunner

Last night’s game was the first game where we need didn’t Auba and Lacazette to get involved to score goals this season.
