Let’s League Cup party like it was 2008!

Unai Emery needed a performance, he wasn’t going to care where it came from, even if it was against a team in the Championship.

Boy did he land one… for the first time this season, everything went right and he left the fans electrified about the possibilities.

We saw some new players, namely Keiran Tierney and Gabriel Martinelli.

We saw some, ‘like a new signing’ players, step forward Hector Bellerin.

We saw some form return. Hello Ozil and Reiss.

We saw some sustained performances. Saka, Chambers and Willock.

We destroyed Nottingham Forest, even if it did take a while to make things happen.

Some points I’d like to make.

Saka:

Love the kid. What a player. He is so adept at making space. He’s aggressive, hungry to move the ball forward and he has no fear when it comes to that final decision. What a great player we have on our hands. Read that he’s a straight A’s student as well. I like that, good at sport and elite in the classroom.

Mesut Ozil:

The player that has offered us next to nothing for the last 3 years shows up against a Championship side and people are levelling criticism at the manager. Please. That’s too much. Sure, Emery isn’t an elite manager of egos, but Ozil has been dropping tame performances for us for years (Germany / and for Wenger). One good game against Leicester or Forest doesn’t change the equation for Emery… you cannot rely on him. He’s not built for the modern world. He’s antiquated. He’s an expensive quarterback in a world that needs more rounded creators. He gives us something special that we lack, but not often enough. Move on.

Martinelli:

What a fun player. He’s everything you want in a Brazilian. Audacious, arrogant, fearless and deadly. His first goal was a work of art. I think it was a floated ball from Reiss to the right, BIG CAL volleyed the ball across goal where the Brazilian wunderkind put his head on it like peak Kevin Davies. What a goal. The late strike where he smashed it into the top corner was super special as well. He’s a livewire, could he be the most exciting youth striker since Anelka? Maybe…

Tierney:

Calls for him to start against United are early, but all the signs are that he’s going to be a beast of a player for us. He’s extremely fast, he has great delivery and I think he has something very special about him. Fans are going to worship him, I just hope Emery resists the urge to blood him too early.

Chambers and Holding:

Chambers delivery and general production in the last two games have been great. I’m not sure about him as a right-back, but he does have some silk under pressure. Seems like a top guy, too handsome to play next to Sokratis, but would definitely like to see more of him if he can cut out the errors. Also great to see Rob Holding back and on the score sheet, another young player that is a leader, another player we’ve greatly missed.

Key takeaway for the squad:

Whatever my thoughts on the manager, I think we can all agree that the squad is much more exciting this season. I love all the new additions and I think the kids are fantastic. We have to support them, they’ll all have ups and downs, but at least there’s hope this year. This feels special. It’s great to feel excited about the majority of the players who might start. Big round of applause to Freddie and Per on the youth, big hat tip to Raul and Edu for the signings, big round of applause for Emery playing them.

Key takeaway for Emery:

It’s looking very good for Emery now. He has a pretty straightforward run until mid-December. We should rack up more than enough points to be sitting comfortably in the top 4 by then. We’ll be top in Europe. I think we could see a similar run to the one we had last year if we can take down United on Monday.

Over the Unai.

See you in the comments. x

“Holding described Xhaka as “a great leader” and also praised the influence of experienced summer signing David Luiz.

“I love Granit in the changing room. I think he is great. He is really switched on to people being late, people using the phones. He is quick to dish out the fines,” Holding added.

“I think he is a great leader and just another positive person to have in the changing room.”

oh oh, that doesn’t bode well.

All that aside though the players surely has to see that he’s now the single most culpable player for holding us back now that most of his waster buddies have either been shipped out or sidelined.

  2. Graham62

    Voting for a captain, why?

If Emery can’t see who is the ideal choice, then something must be seriously wrong.

As I said, Emery is trying to keep everyone happy.

    Weak leadership.

  3. Normski

    Marko

Didnt Poch go 2 windows without signing a player? If they’d signed Dybala that team wouldnt be struggling like it is now.

He has sauce but theres only so far it’ll take you.

Not to worry… Holding did say he’s happy with Xhara on the pitch!

His praises are all about what happens in the ‘changing room’.

  5. Valentin

Why the delay in announcing the result of the vite. Imagine if the squad had secretly decided to all vote for Özil. 😉 Emery may be trying to find a way to change the count without looking ridiculous. Maybe Xhaka has received a single vote from Himself.

People make a big deal about the captain where the problem is not the captaincy is the lack of respected leaders who will start every games.

The two most logical choices Lacazette and Aubameyang will be dropped for tactical reasons.
Leno is not enough vocal. I was going to say that as a goalkeeper he is too far from the action, but as most of the action is near our penalty box he would be perfect. (Lol).
Luiz and Sokratis should concentrate on their own game before telling others how to play.
The others do not have the legitimacy or gravitas.
Holding may be the appropriate future choice, but he needs first to be part of the starting eleven.

Martinelli on Auba: “I arrived to eat on my first day at Arsenal, and Auba came next to me, and said ‘how are you?’ in Portuguese.

He is very nice and very humble. I was thinking to myself: ‘Auba, that I’ve always watched on TV, just came to talk to me! He’s been very supportive.

    Auba for captain?

  7. raptora

    Normski,

Spuds got Ndombele, Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon for a combined fee of nearly £100m. The only player of note they sold was Trippier. They should have better season than their last based on the players they have. Yet they seem to struggle and lose points left and right. How could Poch extract so much in their previous seasons (no trophies mind you) but fail to do so this season? They have won 5 of their last 19 PL away games, losing 10 times. Sauce is thinning out maybe?

  8. Marko

He has sauce but theres only so far it’ll take you.

Yeah he probably needs another 100 odd million spent in January to show that sauce again.

Also can people stop with the bleeding heart bit for Poch not spending in two transfer windows. It was one summer and one winter and most teams do little or no business in January so it’s really only one window. It’s not an excuse for the poor performances now in fact given the optimism after the summer business they just done it should in fact be showing up the manager in a bad light.

  9. useroz

Martinelli on Auba: “I arrived to eat on my first day at Arsenal, and Auba came next to me, and said ‘how are you?’ in Portuguese.

Then, Auba followed up “Son, your arse is occupying my seat. ” in English.

  10. Dissenter

    Cesc
“To think the shit some people gave Auba for having a bad attitude etc.”
Admittedly, I didn’t trust Auba before but have come to realize that he really is the natural leader of the group.
I’m not a bog fan of strikers being captains because they have their back to the remaining 10 players most of the time.

  11. Jamie

    raptora –

They spent £55m on Lo Celso, £54m on Ndombele, £24m on Sessegnon, and £10m on Jack Clarke.

The board really should back him more. Also not entirely sure why he needed those players. Can’t he just coach what he has to perform better than 4 wins in 17 matches?

  12. Dissenter

Emery just reeks of weak leadership.
The manager ought to appoint a captain and be done with it. He’s been with the team for over 15 months now. He’s turned into some type of reality TV spectacle.

  13. Cesc Appeal

    Dissenter

    I agree.

I don’t like having an ST as captain. But right now he looks like the clear leader and the glue holding the whole group together.

Holding gives off the captain material vibe though. Had he not been injured he’d likely be the captain now.

  14. Left testicle

I’d like Xhaka at left back.
Left back in the changing room!

I’d like AMN at right back.
Right back behind the changing room!

  15. Marko

Yeah I don’t see why Poch had to sign up Ndombele and Lo Celso shouldn’t he have been able to wave a magic wand over Wanyama and Dier. Replacing poor players with better players seems so sauceless and easy.

    lmaoooo

  17. Jamie

I bet Wanyama and Dier have impressive passing stats (on a chart somewhere). Must be an issue with Poch transmitting his philosophy to his players. His English isn’t perfect.

  18. Drey

    Cesc Appeal,
If Xhaka is named captain I think many will pinpoint that as the moment Emery lost his job at Arsenal.

Like Sarri, like Jorginho last season. These managers dont seem to learn

  19. raptora

Cannot believe that some of you think Mancini has more sauce than Emery. We are talking about the same manager who after his gig at Man City was so wanted by every elite team in the world that his last 3 jobs are Galatasaray (2nd), Inter (8th, 4th) and Zenith (5th). He was so demanded that he became the coach of the NT of Italy.

I agree that Emery isn’t elite, but comparing him to Mancini is some stretch. Pellegrini is around the same level though. Problem was that Pellegrini is just 4 years younger than Wenger so it didn’t make much sense if we wanted to inject some fresh blood in the club.

That’s why I’m still upset we didn’t poach Conte who was free right at the time we were looking for a new manager. Guy is a proven winner wherever he’s been. And he’s only 50 yo. He could have been our manager for 5-6 years straight. Now he’s in Milano and his Inter Milan is leading the Seria A. They’ve been perfect so far winning 5 out 5 conceding 1 goal. He would have been my number 1 choice. But who knows maybe some day it will happen.

  20. HighburyLegend

“Cannot believe that some of you think Mancini has more sauce than Emery. ”

Yes, but will Mancini would name Granité as our Captain ??

  21. Leedsgunner

For all of you saying you love Granit in the changing room, I’ll raise you one more…

I want Granit left in the changing room… in the SPURS changing room.

If there is a club that deserves a self important mistake ridden one dimensional footballer, I couldn’t think of another team to send him to who deserves him more.

Their whole team is filled with self important incomprehensible players.

He should fit right in. 😉

Ozil was part of the 5 captains last season. Emery could have made the list 4 and dropped Ozil.

“The manager ought to appoint a captain and be done with it. ”

Pep allowed City players to vote for their captain does that make Pep weak?

  23. raptora

    Jamie,

This is what I read regarding Lo Celso’s deal:

The deal is reported to be made up by a £15.5million loan agreement, with an obligation to buy for £51m if the club qualify for the Champions League.

  24. Valentin

    Azed,

You are taking things way too seriously.

Relax, have a drink and enjoy a joke.
I sincerely doubt that the squad decided to all vote for Özil. You have to admit that it would be funny that I also doubt that Xhaka has received a single vote from Himself.

  25. raptora

Laughable that out of the 5 captains we had last year, and we could safely add the 6th captain in Monreal who captained us on more than 1 occasion, Kos is gone, Cech is gone, Ramsey is gone, Nacho is gone, and we are stuck with captains # 4 and 5 in Ozil and Xhaka. Insanity.

I’d name either Luiz or Auba. Both are experienced players and have what it takes to lead by example. Also both are expected to start all of our important games if they are healthy.

Lacazette is a good shout and well worth it. Thing is that most people would agree that for us Auba is the #1 most important striker we have, maybe by a margin. So to give it to Lacazette could undermine Auba in a bad way which we shouldn’t go for. We should not create a conflict among our best players. We don’t need that. If we pick Auba I think it would be more understandable since he is the older of the two, way more proven, and everybody adores him.

If it has to be a defensive player other than Luiz, I’d give it to Leno. I wouldn’t go for Holding because he’s young and not proven, also not 100% guaranteed starter as how good he really is is still up in the air. I would rather give it to Bellerin because he’s been with us for many more seasons and is I think the player with most games played in an Arsenal shirt after Ozil. Hector doesn’t look strong enough to make me trust him though.

In the end anyone but Xhaka and Ozil would do the job.

The easiest option imo is Leno. If we want to give it to someone that is not the GK, then one of Auba and Luiz. Then we have the exotic choices like Guendouzi, Holding and Bellerin which would be wrong imo.

  26. Gentlebris

The vote is not gonna count. I was already waiting to see how Emery turn his back on Xhaka’s captaincy after the crowd booed him….. this is it. Emery has created a way out.

I would pick both Auba and Laca as part of the five since Emery insists on five. But Holding or Chambers has to be there for the British touch. And Holding is 24, definitely not too young to lead a football team!

  27. Normski

Im not justifying Poch and his shit season so far just countering that he was entitled to a splurge having bought 2 any players in two windows.

    Jamie

Your sarcasm is as weak as that beta male persona of yours.

Is it that you’re disappointed that Ozil isnt producing as many ‘very deep completions’ as you would like?

  28. Marko

Very deep completions? Got to be the most pointless statistic going let alone for a supposed CAM. Oh he went deep and completed a 5 yard pass sideways? Oh well Ozil clearly justified his selection then.

Fact is that with regards to Ozil the jig is up. No one’s falling for his nonsense anymore he’s firmly in the not trusted not wanted category at his club and by others hence no one being interested in him. We’re basically counting down the days until he realizes that he’s not wanted and leaves whether it’s in January or next summer.
