4 areas of improvement that will guarantee trophies

by .

I’ve spent the last year getting hammered by you lot in the comments section for my rational disdain for our manager, now things are clicking for people, I’m being told that I have not had a consistent view on Emery. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Someone was so angry they called me a melon shagger. Even our trolls are Waitrose levels of middle-class.

‘Pedro, you’re the sort of guy that secures the bottom button on a waistcoat. I bet you take Aldi’s ‘wine of the month’ to dinner parties and start a conversation piece about how the sommelier game is one giant margin driven ruse. You probably think Barolo plays as a wingback for Brescia, you ingrate bespawler’

I’ve had it with the internet.

I watched the horror show of Watford back again. I liken it to clicking a Whatsapp group chat video from your mates that are builders. Always deeply regrettable.

A few things stood out that could be fairly quick fixes.

Topline, massively oversimplified, but here goes.

Speed:

We are very slow. Did you own a Nintendo Wii with the tennis game back in the day? Did you ever give it to your Grandma to have a crack? When I watch us play out the back, that’s what we look like. We take an age to set up perfectly. Then we missile the control pad into the Baccarat Crystal and Bronze D’Ore Chandelier. Amirite, trolls?!

We transition the ball in a very one dimensional way. It’s almost too choreographed to work. We have good players, so the system will always create goals, but I’m not we’re optimising our approach. This squad, with the right system, should be delivering 90 goals.

We need more urgency in our build-up, we need to move the ball with more purpose, and we need to mix things up so it’s not easy to counter.

Variety:

We are easy to set up against because we do the same thing over and over. We shit the bed in the first half when Matteo lost the ball from one of those new-age goal kicks. Then we repeated the feat in the second half when Sokratis couldn’t even find a player on the edge of the box.

We are practising a new approach in-game and it feels like a brand new endeavour every time we try it. When Pep came to City, his ways looked clunky, 4 months in and it looked amazing. We are a year in, we’ve signed two ball-playing centre backs, we have a sweeper keeper and we have midfielders who should be able to create space and turn under pressure. The approach has never looked worse. I am not against new ideas unless those ideas are costing us goals and making us look like utter fustylugs.

Part of the reason it looks so bad is we do it over and over. We need to mix things up when they’re not working. Cleverly spoke to James Olley at The Standard and basically said they knew how we’d play, but they were shocked that when we’d been sussed, we didn’t change.

Structure:

Norwich are the hot thing at the minute. Who knows if their success will last. What we do know is they have a philosophy and a vision of what they want to do. Their passing out the back was brilliant at the weekend. They beat City’s press really well and they moved the ball at pace. They had a midfield that sat in front of the ball. Players dropped deeper in the box. Everyone knew their role. They play like a new Premier League team, and sadly, they are currently playing the way I suspect Emery would like to.

A few differences. Arsenal offered no midfield protection to the back 4 at the weekend. Xhaka was supposed to be the pivot, but he was all over the place. Matteo and Ceballos were not being led, they careened up the pitch, or panicked and dropped deep into the backline.

Where was our captain instructing them to occupy the space in front of the defence? How did management and the senior players not address the blitzkrieg of shots that showered our goal? It’s staggering how bad the on-pitch management was on Sunday.

Pressing:

When I first wrote about Emery’s hiring in two widely panned posts (day 1 / day 2)… now both classics, I wrote this pearler.

‘He’s a manager who makes players go to war for him, and I’m telling you, we’ll see a massive improvement in the effort, attitude, and footballing output.’

This felt true, especially during the first 4 months. The players ran further and appeared to have grown some balls.

Where has that gone? Our players look lethargic and we do very little pressing. I thought that was a speciality of his? Our players seem to be letting bad things happen to them. Watford was a disaster, we let them get at us and we collapsed. No leadership, very little fight and a capitulation.  These are Emery’s players now, how they behave on the pitch is down to him, because if players weren’t up his standard, he’d have them out by now.

We need to get back to working harder, running further and being a menace on the press.

I’m not saying I have all the answers here, but I am pretty certain if he sorted the above we’d win the league.

Let me know what you think in the comments, melon shaggers. xx

P.S. Help a fellow gooner.

72 percent want Emery sacked. I reckon he’ll be gone in next 4 games I really do.

2 areas of improvement that will guarantee trophies : 1) Emery out;
2) Pep Junior in.

Bojangles

Pedro

As bad as the troll’s comment was you at least has some control over the situation. Many footballers receive worse and just have to suck it up. One of the problems with the internet but something we probably have to accept if we want an Internet largely free of regulations.

HighburyLegend

“I reckon he’ll be gone in next 4 games I really do.”

@TYAGN, the fact that Raul and Edu are now in charge doesn’t mean that we became a club who sack the manager after such a short period in a season. (like too many other clubs do it)

That said, at the moment Emery has lost my support.
So let’s hope that the club will not wait a total disaster to react.

Thank you and goodnight.

@HighburyLegend.

Emery’s lost the players trust from last season. Last 20 games that’s been obvious. Think this new look board aren’t as soft as it seems. In MY opinion he’ll be gone within next 5 games.

Guns of Hackney

Anyone remember when Arsene tried to make us play like Barcelona but with Poundland bucket players? Emery looks like he read Arsene’s Mad Skinny Diary and though “fuck yeah…me likee a lot”. It’s a joke how we approach games. Totz banter as they say in Billericay. As Peter said, we have the players but it’s like Emery just does not know how to use them…at all! I’ve no doubt, any manager apart from Unai could have us playing 100% better than we currently are. Luiz. Xhaka. The Ozil debacle. Fatso. What a mess. Torrier is shite. Gued is looking like… Read more »

Pedro, I am copying my comment so you can answer me. A few weeks ago you stated that the training was buzzing and was more happy that it had been in a long time. I did not want to contradict you, but I was told something slightly different. The squad was excited about the new season, but it was more fractioned than before. A lot of cliques were starting to form: the French speaking one, the Muslim one, the young ones, the untrusted and disappointed one and the loners. Xhaka our captain was said to be firmly in the loner… Read more »

Unathanthium

We’re the first English club to be affected by climate change. Apparently it was too hot for our Spaniard to play for 90 minutes. A hot day in September, you can’t legislate for this massive climate crisis.

As for our manager he looks like a shelf stacker at Asda who’s been promoted to middle management overnight but pines for the days when he arranged tomatoes in the vegetable aisle.

Madhu

Its all been gloom after Sunday. Iam still seething in anger and to top it all i got my Arsenal cup over the weekend. To point out one more thing in our playing, the lack of moving the ball is too obvious, the side ways movement obvious and we hardly seem to create anything from the middle anymore. Its all flanks nowadays and no mixing up. I can’t also understand why midfield doesn’t release our fast strikers fast enough. You can see the movement ahead but the ball goes sideways. I think we have had enough of Emery, time to… Read more »

Edu and Raul out ..

Unathanthium, please stop.
No jokes with the climate change, it’s a real concern.

The way and the speed we attack, look like a chamber orchestra attempting to play a heavy metal song. You can recognise the pattern, but it is too slow, violins riffs trying replace guitar riffs and the percussions are too sedate.

HighburyLegend

@Fire : lol that’s an interesting point of view…

Fire,
Why Raul out? He performed miracles on a limited budget.

@Left : I think that was ironic humor…

Should of read it properly. I thought it was Emery and Raul out.

I hated the last few years of the GG era but I would gladly go back to the them days when we were hard to beat can’t stand to watch us give goals away Emery out now Allegri in. We are going backwards let’s not waste anymore time.

James wood

I really don’t think Cellabos is the answer and you certainly can’t play
him and Ozil in the same side.
Cellabos really needs a season at this level -does he ( run funny)
he certainly has a trick but runs into trouble a bit like Jack did.
He also lacks that turn of pace a top mid needs.

Pepe is also another no no strives to please but runs into trouble
far to often .
He’s final ball really is poor.
Needs a season to adjust to what the Premiership is about.

SammyNelsonsShorts

Good post Pedro, I think I saw something over the weekend, might even have been a retweet from you, highlighting that Arsenal under Emery have never gone 3-0? Call it what you want, fear, intrepidation, but those subs Emery made prove beyond doubt that it’s all eminating from him and his weak fragile in game decision making…as Claude would say…its time to go

SammyNelsonsShorts
Edu me a favour

Anybody else see that tweet that said :

“People are saying Pepe is performing in instalments, the next part of his game isn’t unlocked until the next instalment is paid”

Has to be tweet of the year , surely 😂

jwl

Does anyone know if Tierney, Bellerin and Holding back in training? Maybe Emery sticks with playing out from back because he knows those three can handle it and won’t look like clowns.

I just watched Norwich video of them playing out from back against Man City on weekend and I don’t think our players could play like Norwich did when bringing ball out from their end.

terraloon

For me the problem is that the majority of the supposed good players at Arsenal are skilful of that there is no doubt but they just don’t seem to have top class football brains. We all have seen those performers who can go a zillion keepie ups but rarely do they make professional footballers and that’s where I sort of see the problem is. No matter how well drilled the players are if they don’t address situations as they develop, don’t commit “professional fouls” before situations get out of control , don’t track runners, don’t keep making the same mistake… Read more »

It doesn’t really matter if tierney bellerin and holding can handle playing out from the back if they’re not on the pitch

That’s like playing high crosses in to Henry because adebayor was good in the air!

Un na naai

Jwl

They’ve been in training for a while
And playing u23 games

And no, bringing them back won’t improve it. It’s just that Holding will be putting hospital balls into Guendouzi instead of papa or Luiz.

I’d actually drop xakha and put one of chambers or Luiz in midfield
Or both.
It’s worth a try.

jwl

Just read article un na naai that Holding might play on Thurs against Frankfurt and other two back any time now.

jwl

Un na naai – Xhaka and Sok are by far the two most error prone players and they play in spine, most important positions. I would drop those two quickly, I think those two must infuriate the rest of squad with their constant poor decision making.

Dark Hei

I think an easier way for Emery to manage would be to trust his players to execute his instructions with the freedom to make adjustments on their own.

Have Luiz and Xhaka strike up a partnership as technical leaders between playing it long or short as those 2 are clearly the ones who start things.

Not a “we must do as what we do mechanically during training”.

Attack also need more freedom; instead of the one and only objective is to look for the overlap from wingbacks.

Ivan

We can list possible reasonos all day long, the truth is Emery regress more game by game and we play like pub team. Also, we dont have team on pair with Man C but this group of players i lightyears better Watfords. Emery created vicous turnmoil with constant tinkering with formation trying to be smartass and failing miserably. Player selection included (eg Xhaka when fit plays and all is forgiven beacuse he is leader – leader no where to be seen if there are no squabble for him to lounge in to). Now we have to wait to see for… Read more »

Ahh a throwback to more optimistic times with “day 1 and day 2”. Pity it was already wobbling come match day 1.

Everything promised/hoped from his appointment has been shy in making an appearance.

Pedro, with your contacts at the club are you aware of whether we’d have the balls to change manager mid season? I can’t see it happening at all. Think we’d need to be 6th and in crisis for us to even think about a change in December, much less any other time.

HighburyLegend

“Un na naai – Xhaka and Sok are by far the two most error prone players”

Mustardi instead of Sokratis please.

HighburyLegend

“Pedro, with your contacts at the club”

lol better than Ethan Hunt.

I was thinking Holding instead of either Mustafi or Sok, Highbury Legend, I would even prefer Chambers over those two but I was thinking could take Xhaka spot.

HighburyLegend

There’s only one Mustardi. (Thank God!!)
There’s only one Xhaka. (Thank God!!)
There’s only one Ozil. (Thank God!!)
There’s only one Holding. (Thank God!!)

If Emery doesn’t go back to a 4-2-3-1, he’ll be in a lot of trouble.
That’s the formation the players are comfortable with and Emery should stick with it.

Wasi

“I reckon he’ll be gone in next 4 games I really do.” I reckon thats impossible. Raul and Edu wilk surely give gim a bit more time as these are his players. He wanted Ceballos , Tierney and he also got Pepe who is better than his supposed target Zaha. He replaced Kos with Luiz. Guen,Leno and Sok were all signed under his reign. He has no excuses now. He has to deliver now. The Run of games we have from now to December is the best shot we have to start a win streak and collect a good amount… Read more »

Norwich play out against City Press was fantastic to watch. One of the most entertaining and interesting team in the PL. If you watched their match against Pool theres an argument to be made that they could of gotten something from that game too. Their players are intelligent and hard working. They beat City with injuries to 8 players with many of them being starters. Special mention to Finnish Auba Teemu Pukki. (pronounced as Temu Pukki)

Well the club have been ruthless at culling players and shipped out tones of deadwood this summer so they can be proactive when they want

The question is if they think emery is a deadwood manager or just having a bit of a tough time

The Arsenal players are now going to be weighed down by the overload of negatively and criticism coming their way . To try and play football in and around your own area when there is sure to be a crisis of confidence is a near impossibility. While I defended Emery against some of the unfair and unreasonable criticism he came in for last season from certain quarters, his limitations are definitely showing at the moment. He is getting his formation wrong, his selections wrong and his tactics wrong. If he doesn’t begin getting these things right in the next 3-4 weeks, the club should consider making a change.

Same mistakes over and over again. We are now getting used to the errors by these players. In fact it’s like xhaka, Luiz, socratis, niles and mustafi are all competing to be the error king. They make errors in turns. If emery can’t administer punishments to his error prone players by dropping the particular error victim to the bench, then he is as good as useless. We can’t improve if we try the same tactics with the same players over and over again. Why on earth did emery wisek by removing chambers from the team yet he had had a… Read more »

The Athletic article on Emery this morning, essentially saying he has little sauce!

Also suggests that he may be on borrowed time.

I do think things would have to get dramatically worse for the club to consider change mid season, but it isn’t out of the question that they will get worse unless Emery changes it up for the better very quickly. Finding a way to reduce opponents attempts on goal would be a good place to start.

Valentin

Pedro, So much for the place was buzzing. https://metro.co.uk/2019/09/17/unai-emery-arsenal-players-frustrated-training-10756304/ Seems that my source was closer to the truth with some players already getting the hump with Emery. No training on how to press. No training on how to bypass the pressing. What is the point of two hours video session if you don’t teach players how to beat the opposition. Because that bunch are too polite, we won’t see an open revolt like Chelsea and ManUtd started against Mourinho. However it is clear that some are just playing a “wait until the manager is sacked” game. Özil, Mustafi, Mhkitaryan (it… Read more »

The image above shows the position of the players just before the Watford goal.

Leno clips it to Xhaka and 5 Watford players are taking out of the game.

Emery has to have a long hard look at himself because this is entirely his team. If the players continue to play like nothing is at stake, then it’s entirely his fault.

Chris

It was also said that in the first few months Emery ran practice matches with the first 11 against a team made up of under 23s, set up to play the same way the next opponents that weekend would. The players were said to enjoy it but it was stopped after a while and hasn’t been done since.

I must admit I would tune out more often than not if forced to sit and watch hours and hours of video analysis. It’s not surprising to hear the players becoming tired of that.

Valentin

Azed, I don’t think our players think on their feet. They seems to have been conditioned to blindly follow the playbook. Are they threaten to lose their place if they don’t? Are they just disinterested and refusing to take any responsibility? Are they lacking the ability to play what’s in front of them? For example can Leno see the chip to Xhaka, can he execute it without making things worse? I do believe that Emery is cultivating a culture where bar Lacazette, Aubameyang, Ceballos, Willock and Guendouzi everybody else refuse to take responsibility. For whatever reason, they just go with… Read more »

Valentin/Chris – that article explains why top European change managers every 2/3 years, Wenger and Fergie were anomalies. Players get tired of hearing same voice everyday and it is much easier to change manager than it sell half squad and bring in new. Emery use to this system, he talked about staying only 2-3 years when he was first hired.

And two hour video sessions is crazy, most people can’t focus on one thing for more than about half hour and then you need new task or start daydreaming.

Marko

Pressing sure but I’d like to see us finally having some midfielders with character who dictate and look for the ball instead of just being scared and shying away from the ball and responsibility. Major rebuild still needed in there. Our options simply aren’t good enough despite Guendouzi somewhat emerging.

peanuts&monkeys

Thanks Emery. Please leave. Till we find a manager good enough, we will make do with Freddie.

Marko

Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if he was bipped any day now. You can tell something ain’t right there. Maybe they should have a think about change of management. Allegri and Marcelino are available. Big no to Mourinho and I heard something recently that Raul wanted Enrique originally but he did just lose his daughter. My only concern with bipping him now is that they were probably thinking of doing it in the summer and they probably had their mind on someone else. Do you then change course completely or push it forward? It might mean Nagelsmann or Vieira aren’t… Read more »

Arsenal are not slow. Kolasinac, Ozil, Aubameyang, Pepe, Lacazette, Luiz, Muustafi, Guendouzi, Bellerin, Tierney (when he’s fit) are all fast. Variety? Pep Guardiola is praised for sticking to his guns and playing his way no matter what (because he wins) which is easy to do when you have the best team in the league. After spending money and investing in MFs – Guen, Torreira, Ceballos, Willock, Chambers, we thought we have a packed midfield with players capable of stalling opp attacks. What happens then? Have all these players suddenly gone average, sub-par, no-cojones?

Leedsgunner

I had family commitments so I had to stop watching the game when we were leading at 2-1 and I didn’t know how we conceded the equaliser until now. We conceded another penalty?!?!? Are you kidding me? That’s three games in a row now where we conceded penalties. Like I’ve said repeatedly, other times, we defeat ourselves. Sticking any longer with Emery is like letting the decline continue. Pl pack him off. Under no circumstances can this man even challenge for 3rd, forget the title. Players don’t appear to be excited enough. let the ‘Emery-out’ banners start getting printed.

Peanuts.

The best press is when it is done with more than one player. Pressing in packs.

Do I have to tell you that due to personel Arsenal are not capable of a midfield pack press? Or at least an affective one.

Everybody should know this by now.

Any data metric that has us nearly twice as worse as the best and second from the bottom is another damning statistic that we just don’t need right now.

I know people don’t put too much validation in numbers and sometimes, rightly so…but I do like the numbers and this number sucks. Just like our unwanted shots against. 96 or something? I don’t care who you are but if you’re getting 20+ shots against you every game, at least two are going in each game.
