Time for a performance

by & filed under News Review.

It is a HUGE game today. All the usual suspects won their games… bar City, they lost in an embarrassing 2-3 thriller away at Norwich.

What a result for Premier League new boys. They were well worth it as well. Very organised. They ran their guts out. They took their opps when they were presented to them and they carved out one really awesome counter-attacking goal.

I loved reading the post-match commentary from the fans. Raheem Sterling is now average. Pep has finally been found out. Manchester City are certainly losing the league to Liverpool.

You couldn’t make it up.

In a post fan tv world, the only place to exist on the radical edge of everything.

For me, what is clear is this… Arsenal are winning the bloody league. Yes, fellas, Unai is bringing it home.

First up, we have to destroy Watford by 11 goals to climb second (from 7th). Be realistic, probably 12 or 13 because the chances of us keeping a clean sheet are pretty slim.

We’re in a post-Lacazette world for the next month. There’s a lot of fans getting their panties in a twist over the lack of an Eddie in the squad. I think people need to remind them of the troubles the young forward was having when he was getting game time with us.

I assume the thinking from Emery will likely be to have Auba as the lead striker, and if he needs a rest, we’ll slip Pepe in there. He’s very comfortable through the middle and offers all the same attributes as Auba… bar the unreal finishing (in England at least).

Also worth remembering Lacazette is not good away from home. His record is very poor, I think Tammy Abrahams has more goals this season than Laca had in the entirety of last year. He’s also not hugely prolific. He scored a Premier League goal every 192 last season. I know he does a lot for the team, he landed 10 assists, which is impressive for a striker.

Anyway…

I think where we’re going to see the innovation is out wide. The manager has quite a few players to choose from. We have a lot explosive pace this year, and starting your career out wide is a lot less stressful than through the middle. I think Reiss has a huge chance to lay claim to a first team spot. I think Saka has always looked very promising when offered a chance to stretch his legs, he also looks very ready from a mentality perspective, no fear in his eyes. Then we have wildcards like Gabriel, who IS the new Anelka… and potentially ESR who has a lot of versatility.

In short, I think Eddie is going to learn more out on loan this season with Leeds, versus playing a bit part role when his confidence was looking pretty touch and go.

We know what we’re going to get tomorrow. Bullied.

Watford are playing under Quique again, he’ll bring a lot of energy, he’ll make them work like dogs and I’ve no doubt we’re going to be penned into tight areas all game long much in the same way we were against Burnley.

I’ll keep on saying it, but I truly hope Emery has learned his lesson with three holding midfielders. We’re not built for deep blocks and I don’t think players care for the pragmatism. We’ve been porous all season. We shipped lots of shots against Spurs and Liverpool. The same happened against fu*king Burnley of all clubs.

The manager needs to take advantage of the technical superiority we have over Watford, that’s not going to come from attack-minded players shutting up shop.

Let’s stretch them, let’s play the beautiful game, let’s bring some excitement to the pitch… we need a performance. Chelsea looks great yesterday, there’s no reason we can’t offer up the same type of decisive output.

Right, just a short one today. I’ll see you in the comments where I shall eviscerate your challenges with word bullets.

    Oopppsssssy

That was bad, though not unexpected considering how clueless Mr Bland is, Did say so long as the teams around us all won their matches convincingly we would shit our pants badly today

Emery is a shocking manager and he’s rapidly ruining the few quality players and youngsters left at the club,he’s lose the dressing room and the players looks to want him out badly just as us

Really worry for Pepe, don’t deserve Emery at all,he would be a beast under Klopp.. Just need a bit of coaching and fine-tuning

Raul/Edu cut Mr Bland loose before we enter full blown crisis mode.

Can’t see us getting better,Where’s CG?

    Tick tock

    Ishola

It’s not about being childish. He had a full season to find a system that works with the players he has.

The problem is that he still hasn’t. We are still seeing the same shit as last season.

The biggest lesson that he still hasn’t learned is that we need to have a fully functional and drilled defence before expecting anything more

After today’s game, it is obvious that he has still not learned that lesson.

  3. Leftsidesanch

To throw youngsters under the bus is a weak approach, it is our most experienced players committing the same errors.

We had warnings with playing out from the back, got done with it and then continued to. That was worrying.

Seeing Xhaka get into position and then let the ball go out in the opponent box was pathetic and also watching Willock not play Auba through was another pathetic moment. Nelson is another who is far too timid, but he will be picked over a Martinelli or Saka who I feel will show more.

  4. Leftsidesanch

Ishola my biggest disappointment from Emery is that he has the same stubborn traits that eventually sunk Wenger. Refusal to change something even though it’s clearly not working.

We have no defined style, no control in games. Our defence is piss poor and Emery will pick his favourites at the detriment of the team. Sounds like we’ve been here before. At least he likely won’t be rewarded with undeserved contract after contract.

  5. Valentin

    I miss CG.
Some of his posts were incoherent, but at least he was polite and did not abuse anybody who did not abuse him first.
He was laughed and ridiculed when he said that Emery would get fired by November and replaced by Red Freddy. That does not look so far fetch in view of Arsenal recent performances.
    Pedro should definitely reinstate him.
Countdown to his first reinstated comment.
    Tick Tock.

  6. Ishola70

    Legendary DB10

I don’t quite know what you are talking about.

I said it was childish to want him sacked after his first six months in the job. Plenty of those that were requesting were Wenger trolls anyway.

You may not have real faith in a manager but still want him to be given a decent roll of the dice. Six months in the job after Wenger being in for decades is not a decent roll of the dice.

In in his second season now and after today’s poor presser where he was protecting his sub-par senior players tells me it’s a bit of a rotten set-up overall save for a couple of goosd strikers in the team. Not going to do anything of real note under him.

  7. Leftsidesanch

And at what point do Laca and Auba decide they’ve had enough? Auba with a well taken brace today and still comes out of the match fortunate to get a point after being in a commanding position.

The usual suspects are fucking it up for our two players of use. God knows where we would be without them.

  8. Pierre

    Azed
Stop making excuses for him , it was obvious to me that he was clueless from day one in the way he sets up the team and I have not wavered in my belief that he is tactically inept.

You need to face up to the fact that Ozil was right.
Ceballos wasn’t exactly happy being substituted was he, I would imagine that he has already formed an opinion on Emery’s capabilities as a coach.

He’s lost the players and once that happens then there is only one decision that has to be made.

You’re fighting a losing battle in defending what I believe is the worst manager in the prem .

Though we were 2 up , at no point did the manager ( a term i use loosely) attempt to tighten us up through midfield or at the back.

He allowed the opposition the freedom of the wide areas , similar to the liverpool game, and by giving them so much space and not giving our full backs protection, it meant that we sat deeper and deeper and allowed Watford to have wave after wave of attacks .

Could he not see what happening , to bring on willock and Nelson and have them play so advanced was suicidal …

No one was surprised when Watford scored , we were fragmented all over the pitch .
At that stage of the game we needed to play as a unit and make Watford work for their opportunities.

So what did he do .. .he brought on Nelson

I think banning posters is silly but let’s not pretend CG is some kinda visionary ahead of his time.
Most of his posts were entertaining because of how insanely crazy his predictions were, …….not accurate.

Watford finishing higher than Arsenal in the league just to name one.

  10. Gentlebris

I think the one thing Emery got right is his choice of captain. Xhaka complements Emery every inch of the way.

Now Arsenal fc is being governed by an Emery and a Xhaka. This is all we have after our brave efforts flying banners in the sky and all that.

This is such a ‘fuck you’ to Arsenal soldiers who fought gallantly in that war.

  11. Paulinho

“Could he not see what happening , to bring on willock and Nelson”

So, not quite an upgrade on Ramsey yet eh, despite giving him the big build up before the season started.

Not a problem playing them advanced when they don’t need to work for space (due to Watford piling forward), it’s just a bit of an issue when they’re a bit shit and fall over like calves can’t take advantage.

  12. Valentin

We had for years Wenger apologists justifying mistakes because of his past. Now we have Wenger haters justifying mistakes because at least he is not Wenger. The excuses tend to be the followings: Wenger was given so much time why would you not give him more time.

The idea that only Wengerite could criticise Emery after six months is just ridiculous.
After four games you can see what Lampard is trying to do at Chelsea. After a full season and three transfer windows, nobody has a clue what style of play Emery is trying to implement.

Most fans can accept bump in the road if they can see the direction the club is taking. Here we have had setbacks after setbacks with still no clear idea. We may beat ManUtd with a good performance and then stumble against lower opponents. We are not progressing, at best like a crab we are making sideway moves.

  13. Ishola70

    Wenger Eagle

    Not true.

As said it’s about seeing fair play and wanting to see him being given a decent chance.

Those that were calling for his head after just six months were just kiddies throwing toys out of the pram. Or Wenger trolls.

Said a couple of posts ago I had no real great expectation when Emery was first appointed but that doesn’t equate to cutting the guy after just a couple of breathes in management terms.

What he said today though in protecting these sub-par senior players tells me that he isn’t going to do anything of note. I had hope he would cut a lot more of these shit senior players but alas it looks like it is too much for him and he has drawn a line now in who he is going to stick by and sticking by these players means he is going to fail really.

    Next please.

  14. Victorious

Conceding 30+ attempts at goal to a team with just 1 point and stucked right at the bottom of the table, lol utterly ridiculous how bad Emery can make us look,

Anyone still supporting this man is worst than those deluded AKBs supporting Wenger even as he ebbed away.

    ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING COACH

  15. Gentlebris

‘Watford finishing higher than Arsenal in the league just to name one.’

At least Watford just took Emery’s Arsenal to the the mango field today to pluck some.

  16. Ishola70

Willock today just showed his inexperience.

That play where he over-ran the ball and got robbed and Watford went on the counter was just so green. And who was over-rating him on here?

The problem for Arsenal though is that they have “green” senior players as well one of whom is captain.

  17. Valentin

Funny how the “I have never defended Emery” brigade is out in force. Soon we will have the “I have always thought that he was bad but that he deserved a chance”.
The next one “He was only a transition manager anyway” (whatever that means).
The truth is a certain number were so happy in getting rid of Wenger, they refused to acknowledge that we had hired a worst coach. The reality is suddenly dawned on many.
Like CG would say Truth hurts.
    Tick Tock.

  18. Paulinho

It seems as though if a manager has a load of talented players at his disposal that can play on the half-turn and in tight spaces effectively, then you can see instantly see “what they are trying to do”.

No real difference to Sarri. Difference is he has Abraham up front and voila, Chelsea have a cutting edge to go along with the nice football. Mount as well gives them something different off the ball.

  19. Gentlebris

‘The usual suspects are fucking it up for our two players of use. God knows where we would be without them.’

But the captain said we should blame them for each chance they don’t roll in.

  20. Victorious

Can’t blame Willock or any player for that matter going forward this season until I see them under another coach

dunno why he had Willock/Nelson so high up the field of play attacking the ball and been embarassingly brushed off it with ease when we clearly needed presence in midfield to calm the ball down and dictate the tempo

    Emery is a fraud.

  21. Ishola70

    Pfft reality.

Like your reality Valentin that Willock is not the dogs bollocks?

If a poster states that he doubts that Emery will get CL places in his first two seasons that is hardly rating him. But after his appointment there should a period where it is seen that he is given a fair enough chance. Wanting him sacked after six months half a season is not a fair chance.

So less of the told you so rubbish and that applies to other posters as well.

There is no wise crystall ball peering at all in this one. Sorry.

  22. Gentlebris

‘Funny how the “I have never defended Emery” brigade is out in force. Soon we will have the “I have always thought that he was bad but that he deserved a chance”.’

Can you just believe Ishola for example?

Emery showed the peak of his cowardice against Liverpool and I was having none of it, Ishola wrapped his arms around Emery and told me to leave his beloved alone.

But see the man here now….. ready to swear he never knew Emery.

  23. WengerEagle

Right Ishola, so in a roundabout way you’re pretty much saying that he’s not up to the job- which is exactly what we were saying at the end of last season only for yourself and the majority of others to call us hysterics and knee-jerk, usual deflective shite.

As I said, the more we spend and more players we bring in there’s only so much longer that he can hide behind the players inherited excuse as to why we’re not seeing any improvement on the pitch, or with our sideline gesticulating and dithering for that matter.

He just needs a long trenchcoat with a dodgy zipper to go full AW now.

  24. Ishola70

    WE

I said before that I had hoped that Emery would give more surgery to this team because unlike you I don’t over-rate this present side.

His words in his presser today tell me that he has now drawn a line in his surgery and he has gone faint hearted in the continued cull of the team that was needed.

There was hope that he may have been ruthless after the Ozil and Mustafi incident but alas no.

Let’s be serious what the fcck are the club going to achieve having Granit Xhaka as a key player as well as captain.

This is what has disappointed me the most even if I had my doubts about him when first appointed.

  25. Gentlebris

‘He just needs a long trenchcoat with a dodgy zipper to go full AW now.’

Let’s be honest, Wenger played and you knew the team had been practicing fast attack football and doing no work on defence all week, Emery plays and you wonder what the team has been doing in training all week.

  26. Paulinho

“Those that were calling for his head after just six months were just kiddies throwing toys out of the pram. Or Wenger trolls.”

Not troll, just seemingly no idea how much players impact on things the basic fundamentals of football, like passing through midfield etc.

You can turnover personell, but if you still are not actually improving the personnel then dysfunctional play will continue.

Before we signed Arshavin we had four straight 0-0 draws with some of the most putrid football I’ve ever seen. We bring in a genuine world class talent, and look like we can play football again all of a sudden, well at least as long as Arshavin could be arsed.

  27. Chitom

    Valentin
You know what else is funny ………giving a new guy a fighting chance without setting your hair on fire , especially when nothing you say or do can change the course of his tenure.
Especially when you never really wanted him in the first place.

  28. Victorious

He just needs a long trenchcoat with a dodgy zipper to go full AW now

Lol,not fair on Wenger, I mean this guy couldn’t polish Wenger’s boots even at his worst form

His trademark panic move of pinching his drooping jaw or rubbing his side lips is a sight to behold though 😁

  29. Ishola70

And how long did it take you WE to realise Granit Xhaka is a huge hindrance in the team? Huge. Plenty of time if I remember.

No manager is going places with such an oaf in the side.

  30. WengerEagle

‘Wanting him sacked after six months half a season is not a fair chance.’

    Disingenuous nonsense you’re talking here.

Nobody was calling for his head in February, it was the end of season collapse and the 3-0/3-1 arse rammings we took at Leicester and Wolves as well as defeats to Everton and Palace at home, all within the space of the month of April that turned the tide for plenty and convinced them that he wasn’t the right man to take us forwards.

And even after that car crash of a month, all we had to do to pretty much secure top 4 was beat Brighton at the Emirates in our penultimate match. After going 1-0 up early on we splutter to a 1-1 draw effectively ending the race.

And the EL Final was the nail in the coffin for the season collapse, absolutely hammered by the Chavs and made to look like we had no business being on the same pitch.

  31. TheLegendaryDB10

    Ishola

I was trying to say that UE has still not found his team.

The problem is that he is trying too hard to impose his system (the only system he knows) on players who are not built for that.

The problem is compounded by the fact that Raul and Edu are buying players that are better suited to a team that will be technical in nature which is not UE style.

They are buying for the future. UE is not the one to lead us back to a possession based technical team.

It makes me wonder if Raul and Edu are aware of this and know that UE is just a bit part manager. I really hope they have someone else on their mind.

  32. WengerEagle

    Ishola

I realised halfway through Xhaka’s first season that he was more of a hindrance than a help, funny that you pick him out and ignore the multitude of players that I’ve been vindicated on rating early on.

Forgot that you’ve never been wrong about a player.

  33. Valentin

    Gentlebris,

You could not make that up.

Ishola’s comment is a textbook example of “I have always thought that he was bad but that he deserved a chance”.
But still instead of accepting that Emery is out of his depth, he is just digging his heels and trying to justify his position.

And then come the “what about that” snarky comment that is completely irrelevant to the original point made. At least that give them another angle where instead of justify his position that he knows is untenable, he is now attacking anybody who disagree with him on their past comments.

    Classic deflection tactic.

  34. Victorious

Hopefully it won’t get to the point of fans wanting us to lose games to force Raul’s hands

Really Emery is not worth it, sack him already and have Freddie steady the ship until the summer

    Hopefully we can bag Allegri

  35. Ishola70

    WE

As said I was hoping for some more blood on the floor from senior players that aren’t good enough.

But Emery has gone all faint hearted. He hasn’t got the stomach for the extensive cull that is needed.

His throwing of youngsters under the bus to protect these sub-par senior players in the presser is all we needed to know.

    Next please.

  36. Gentlebris

Bayern, Madrid, Barcelona and all the other great football clubs would fire Emery early tomorrow, but not Arsenal fc; no not us.

Maybe that in part explains why we are the only widely supported football club in the world with no CL glory…… over deliberated actions and pussy reactions.

  37. WengerEagle

‘I said before that I had hoped that Emery would give more surgery to this team because unlike you I don’t over-rate this present side.’

I mean Leno, Sokratis, Luiz, Guendouzi, Toreirra, Pepe, Ceballos all played today. All Emery regime signings.

AW regime signing Aubameyang has bailed Emery out big time this season with 2 direct winners in our wins over Burnley and Newcastle as well as goals to pick us up a point vs Spurs and today.

Auba and Laca dragged us to the EL Final last season which was conveniently overlooked when lamented how awful a midtable squad that AW had left.

  38. Nelson

“31 shots with 10 on target for Watford vs 7 shots with 3 on target for Arsenal.”

I wonder what is the stats for just the 2nd half. We played more on their side in the first half. It also showed that Ceballos and Ozil can play together. The 2nd half was a complete disaster. The midfield had no shape at all. The players were lost on the pitch. Watford had all the chances to shot at will.

Comparing to how SPUDS and Chelsea played yesterday, they looked much more like a top 4 team.

  39. Ishola70

    Valentin

A poster on here thought it fun to dig my post and several others up from when Emery was first appointed.

My old post stated that I thought it doubtful that he would get CL places in his first two seasons. He may even prove me wrong on the second season part because at that time the job Chelsea now have on their hands was not known then. I also had doubt because I knew the extensive cull that needed to be excercised upon the Arsenal team to see them comfortably getting into the top four.

So there is no deflection at all. Only a wish to see some fair play to be done in giving a manager some time to see what he could do.

I mean these told you so’s must feel a bit cheap really lol. Hardly awe inspiring real deep insight is it to predict the fall of Unai Emery.

  40. WengerEagle

You can’t defend Emery by saying that he had to inherit Granit Xhaka when he opts to make him our skipper and starts him every match ffs.

He could have easily gone the Mustafi route with Xhaka too.

  41. azed

    Valentin and Gentlebris

Ishola said he didn’t expect much from Emery. I posted comments made by folks when Emery was announced.
He also knows shouting Emery out isn’t worth it because Emery has a two year contract which is up at the end of the season.

  42. China1

The game was on really late in China and I’m exhausted lately so I couldn’t keep my eyes open and fell asleep after their first bs goal and thank god i did

  43. WengerEagle

Bit rich mocking people for ‘told you so’s’ Ishola when you’re always at it on here with posters.

It’s ok, you were wrong on Emery and have seen the light. We’re going to make it mate.

  44. Valentin

Watford already had 5 attempts including 3 on targets before we scored our first goal.
I think that we scored our two goals with our first three attempt at goals. Our goals were really against the run of play. That what great strikers give you. The ability to score from nothing ball. But ultimately if you have no defense and an idiotic game plan they can’t keep bailing you out.

  45. Gentlebris

The sunshine in all of this is that when the fans decide to fire Emery, we will not have to deal with the EKBs as they are so few after the game today.

People just need to turn out in the ground and boo Emery three games straight…. that’s all it will take. No need to even rock banners in the sky, Emery is not that important.

  46. WengerEagle

    Valentin

That’s why even during the unbeaten run last season that their were subtle alarm bells, we were winning games we were outplayed in and finishing at a ridiculously clinical and unsustainable rate.

  47. Ishola70

Bit cheap now isn’t it WE.

Guendouzi is clearly a very bright future prospect however much you like to put him down.

Torreira still may come good along the line.

Sokratis was clearly a stop gap signing.

Leno has his plaudits although he has shown weakness, tbh the standard of goalkeeping has gone down everywhere tbh. All so-called top keepers show weakness.

Ceballos overall is still seen as a decent acquisition given time.

Pepe has only just joined for gods sake.

Luiz is a classical Arsemal signing as a whole. Conceded loads of goals, scored plenty of goals compared to the majority of the league. Yeah let’s go cheapish on defence again and big on attack.

WE surely you had a clue of the extensive job that was needed to be done at this club when Emery had to bring in old has beens, youngsters, a stop gap and some decent players all in one summer window in his first season at the club stretched over a very modest budget . Surely this was an indicator to you.

Well he’s lost his bottle on the continued cull.

  48. Valentin

    Azed,

Ishola said at the time that he did not expect Champion’s League because Wenger had left such a poor squad not because Emery was not up to the job.
I was one arguing that the squad left by Wenger was par with Chelsea and ManUtd. That it had been badly managed by Wenger and that all we needed one new CB and one dominant dynamic central midfielder a la Tanguy NDombele. The fact that we missed top 4 by a whisker after we blew out chances against minnows is proof that the squad was top 4 quality.

Manager can be sacked. Javi Garcia has a three years contract. Keeping in lace a manager who is the wrong fit or incompetent is going to cost Arsenal more than sacking him.

  49. Ishola70

    No WE

    I wasn’t wrong on Emery.

For the umpteenth time I said when he was first appointed that I had doubts that he would qualify for CL. A poster put this up recently.

After his appointment though thought he should be given a fair crack of the whip despite the doubts.

    That’s the story. No more.

  50. China1

There was one point when Leno didn’t take the goal kick and instead guen or someone else was given it. What next level dumbassery is this?

There was also another time when Leno was on the ball inside his 6 yard box and both CBs flanked him so deep they were technically behind him

This is the dumbest bullshit strategy I’ve ever seen. Even if your players are world class, they can make a mistake when getting pressed 10 yards from their own goal and when they do it’s an immediate 1 v 1 scenario and low and behold a goal

    Dumb bullshit.

If you’re going to bring your defense so deep to draw their attack so far forward, the logical next step is actually bypass your own defense into the other gaps vacated for your attacking midfield. There should be a reason for that tactic right? Like ‘we pass it around that deep so that we can xyz’. But how many times have we survived or escaped the horrible defensive passing situation and it has been directly helpful in our next step?

Like if we play it around at the back, draw out their attack and midfield then instantly play it long and score on the break you can say ah I get it. It’s risky but this is why we do this. But we don’t do that. We literally just struggle for lols.

It’s like someone who isn’t that good at a game and who’s primary missing is to win and complete the game choosing voluntarily to put it on hard mode. Why? Why why why?

  51. Ishola70

And how can anyone be actually “wrong” about Emery?

I didn’t hear one poster on here forecasting greatness for Arsenal under Emery. Not one.

But to see fair play is a different matter. Fair crack of the whip.

Seems people are getting confused with the two in their eagerness to be proved ti be seen as “right” about Emery whatever that is.

  52. WengerEagle

    Ishola

Clearly how? He goes from having a really good game against Spurs to completely reverting to type and being anonymous today. Offered nothing going forward and was weak defensively. He may go on to become a serious player, more than likely though is that he ends up back in France playing for a midtable club within a few years.

More hope than expectation for Toreirra coming good. He hasn’t the stamina or physique to impose himself on games in the PL and he’s fairly ordinary on the ball, world’s apart from even Ceballos in that regard.

Stop gap signings are generally meant to come in and do a job for a year or two, not be at the heart of a defensive shit show game after game. He did cost 20m, not like he was a freebie.

I mean he has us playing out from the back as if we’re Pep’s Barcelona and we’re away at a fired up Watford on a tiny pitch with nerve-wracked defenders that on their best day don’t want the ball at their feet.

Bringing off Ceballos on 55 mins and bringing on Willock who was next to useless and brushed off the ball with ease.

  53. azed

“Manager can be sacked. Javi Garcia has a three years contract. Keeping in lace a manager who is the wrong fit or incompetent is going to cost Arsenal more than sacking him.”

Arsenal will not sack Emery unless something Catastrophic happens…

We are owned by the Kroenke’s and after the outlay this summer, there would not be a managerial sacking.
Arsenal will not hire a manager under contract so those expecting Nagelsmann or Viera are in for a shock.

  54. WengerEagle

‘I didn’t hear one poster on here forecasting greatness for Arsenal under Emery. Not one.’

Nope but the majority did fob off all of the blame on the players and exonerated Emery for the season collapse, yourself included.

New season, money spent, new players in and what do you know we’re getting Barcelona’d by bottom of the table 0 points Watford with a 2-0 HT lead. Up until then we conceded 2 and dropped points to a dejected away form Spurs at home, were smashed by Liverpool [somewhat forgivable this one], and had Auba to thank for scraping by Newcastle and Burnley with all 3 points while playing abject stuff.

  55. Ishola70

    WE

Of course posters are going to look at players as well.

Ozil, Xhaka, Kola, Mustafi all saw to that.

Xhaka is awful let’s be honest here.

Sokratis was just a plaster. Luiz is probably just going to be a plaster as well.

And this misguided implication here that I was a pro-Emery is just not true.

I repeatedly said on here that Emery’s unbeaten run last season was being over-rated by posters who were getting carried away by it. How can this be said if you are pro-Emery?

  56. Pierre

I received dogs abuse from most on here for saying a year ago what 95% of posters are saying now..

It gives me no pleasure to be proven right though it will give me great pleasure to being proved right on Mesut Ozil when the new manager arrives and uses him how a no.10 should be used ….. all those who said he was finished will be be made to eat their words.

Emery ‘s use of Ozil, Mhkitaryan and Ramsey in the No.10 position has been criminal and the manager has already started messing Ceballos about.

I always said that Emery’s use of Ozil in the Europa league final and asking him to shadow jorginho was laughable and we are now seeing more examples of his bizarre tactics.

The sooner they sack him the better ,then we can bring someone in who recognises class .
Emery has wasted a year of 3 very talented footballers careers with his handling of Ozil, Mkhitaryan and Ramsey and if we are not careful, Ceballos will go the same way.

  57. Ishola70

    WE

“He goes from having a really good game against Spurs to completely reverting to type and being anonymous today. ”

WE putting in some good home performances doesn’t make you a very good team overall. Having both good home and away performances makes you a very good team.

There are leagues all over the place where a team can have a good home record but are not near the top of the table.

I thought you would know this as you follow leagues outside of the EPL.

Don’t get confused with good home performances meaning very good team.

Away games are usually the real acid test of how good a team really is and Arsenal have failed miserably on that front now for too many seasons.

  58. Dissenter

    Pierre
Ozil is shit…and has been shite for at least two years.
That said, your Emery criticism are not far from being alright even though you approach it like a Wenger hold-out.

  59. Ishola70

Pierre was actually one of those that was over-rating Emery’s unbeaten run last season.

Apparently all Emery had to do was to sit Torreira in games and Arsenal would take all before them.

That great unbeaten Emery run was proof of that apparently.

  60. Goobergooner

Absolutely shocking second half. Have been noticing how shite our pressing is for some time. We defend very narrow and put no pressure on players on the edge of the box allowing so many shots.

We are so incredibly weak in defense it is cringeworthy at times.

I can not believe we picked up Luiz. Literally my least favourite player of the last decade, and somehow ends up as started for us in his 30s.
Does anyone at Arsenal understand what a good defender looks like?

I hate playing out from the back. We are so fucking slow.

I do believe that their first goal should have been disallowed due to the attackers foot being in the box, but even so, what the actual fuck was Sokratis thinking.

We have to have some of the dumbest cunts (sok Luiz xhaka mustafi) in top flight football. All in our defensive department.

    Can’t stand our defense.

And getting tired of Emery’s lack of adaptability.

  61. China1

The problem with torreira is we can’t even be sure if he’s the right player for us because he only spent a 3rd of a season playing as a DM.

The rest of the time he he has been either injured, out of position, benched or exhausted. People writing him off are misguided as that only time he was given a chance he was our best player.

As long as he’s out of position playing as a bloody n10 or b2b don’t expect him to be at his best. He needs a run of games in xhaka’s Place as a holding player and nothing more. After that we’ll see if his form return or if he really is not up to it

  62. Ishola70

Pedro picks up an interesting aspect on his twitter line.

It’s basically an Auba quote after the Watford match having a dig at Xhaka after him implying after the Spurs match that his mistake would not have mattered if only the attackers had taken their chances in that match.

Folks say Emery’s team looks disjointed on the pitch well it looks like there is a divide between the players.

  63. Nelson

Arsenal have now conceded 96 shots this season, more than any other team in the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Bundlesiga.

  64. Moe

Emery clearly is poor, but Ozil and Xhaka are still poorer. Pls stop with this Ozil coming good bullshit. Slate Emery, but defend Xhaka and Ozil, go figure.

  65. Gonsterous

Ffs really arsenal ? How could we lose a 2 goal lead to Watford. These are the team’s we should be rolling over if we are serious for CL qualifications.

I have supported the manager now it’s time to bin the Spanish waiter. Never learns, not even the hard way.
    #emery OUT

  66. Dissenter

Emery has pitched his tepee tent with certain players. I think he’s created camps within the squad.
The club has to grow a spine and get him out quickly. His pay off is just for 9 months and Allegri is out of a job so no need to pay off a club.
We need balls right now in upper management.

  67. Tony

Would love to know what Josh K thought of that performance if he was downstairs with his watching with his dog as he supposedly loves to do.

What will Raul, Edu and Josh do now?

Act like ostriches or be proactive where at the vert least they give Emery a final written warning/ultimatum, such as another capitulating performance like that and Emery is fired?

Wenger in his last 10+ years was just grossly incompetent in many facets of his management: transfers, tactics, dictatorial power crazy etc, but Emery simply isn’t a PL manager and never will be.

Saw the first 2 lines of a Pierre post then moved on to the next post, but
apparently Mystic Pierre famed for his all seeing and knowing really knew Emery was clueless from day 1.

Funny how Mystic P couldn’t see how clueless Wenger and Ozil were for so many years. 3 FA cups in 14 years, what a return! 1 CL pst final and non-stop humiliations on and off the pitch.

Oh the irony of it all.

Pedro will have been licking his I-told-you-so lips and will no doubt be in full fire Emery mode in his next post match post.

My wife came into my office and asked me who the picture was of top of Pedro’s post. I told her that it was a computer aged generated picture of Pedro at 50 but in reality he is early 30s now living and working in New York.

She then asked me if Pedro was Spanish and if so, why was he blogging for an English team and not Barca or RM?

I told her his name was really Peter from the garden of England county: Kent.

My wife said ok then that explains everything and nothing leaving the room with a wry smile.

  68. Paul Mc Daid

Emery is way out of his depth, Last ten games have been disasters , Zero ideas or tactics, If next ten games are like this then he has to go, Was delighted to see Wenger being sacked because he basically had turned us into a laughing stock, We have not had a defense in a decade, I was sure Emery would sort this out but he has failed miserably , Ten games more max and if not sorted then be gone mate, We are Arsenal Football Club, Not a fucking pet project.

  69. Caligooner

Got outplayed all game and downright dominated in the second half. By Watford. Somehow in two years of emery our defense has actually gotten worse.

    Embarrassing.

He took off our best midfielder, because it was hot. He’s Spanish not an Eskimo.

What the hell is going on here???

Straight incompetence. If he was sacked tomorrow I wouldn’t bat an eye even though it won’t happen.

We’ve played one good half of football this season. Very hard to watch.

  70. Caligooner

If our players are scared playing against Watford then we need new players and we certainly need a new captain.

Isn’t the captains job to lead and settle the team? Nice job Xhaka. You and emery deserve each other, it just needs to be somewhere else.

  71. Emiratesstroller

Arsenal’s defence has been “dogs shit” for a very long time and that has been
particularly evident in last two seasons where we have conceded 51 goals and
dropped consistently points through a “comedy of errors”.

This season we could be on track to concede even more. We have already leaked eight goals in five games.

For a start we have conceded an unnecessary penalty in each of last three games against Liverpool, Spurs and Watford.

I would also assess that at least four of the other five goals conceded this season were avoidable due to poor defensive errors rather than opponents attacking brilliance.

Arsenal’s ongoing problems are down to a combination of factors. Poor distribution by the goalkeeper, two wing backs who do not know how to defend, centre backs who are frankly not top class and a holding midfielder [Xhaka] with limited pace and football intelligence.

There appears to be an “ingrained cancer” within squad under both Wenger
and Emery neither of whom has managed to sort out the problem.

Good defending is dependent on organisation, discipline and above all leadership. None of these characteristics are evident in our current team.

Frankly none of the players selected in our first five games this season are
good enough if we are going to finish in top 4 in EPL.

Maitland-Niles and Kolasinac are likely to be replaced by Bellerin and Tierney
in next two weeks. Hopefully that will improve our situation on the flanks.

My personal view is that Holding needs to be brought into the centre. He is
not brilliant, but at least he knows what his role in the team is i.e. to defend
properly. Personally I would play him in combination with Chambers albeit
the latter is not a long term solution.

  72. Leftsidesanch

Xhaka is pathetic and so is Emery. Scared of Watford??! A poster said this in jest during the game and who knew how right he was

  73. China1

We keep hearing stories of xhaka playing because he’s physical and a little tall, yet the guy is scared like a bitch against jobber teams like watford

    Great player even greater captain…

  74. Tony

Guns of SF more on what you posted re Xhaka:

‘We were scared… we are happy to take a point’: Granit Xhaka slams Arsenal as he admits they ‘paid’ for their second-half display during collapse to a draw at Watford

Arsenal were 2-0 ahead of Watford going into the half-time break at Watford

But they conceded twice in the second-half and could only draw the match

Granit Xhaka has admitted they were bad from the first to last second of half”

    Xhaka says:
‘We were scared in the second half,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘We knew they would come at us and push us hard but we have to show more character and not be scared. We have spoken about it. We cannot give a performance like this in the second half.

‘Nobody wanted the ball. Every team in the Premier League is strong enough to score so you have to stay calm, be mentally strong and we weren’t today.’

    Beggars belief!!!!!!!!!!

  75. China1

Can you imagine cesc, rvp, Campbell, Adams, vieira as captains being frightened by dross like watford?

That’s next level embarrassing. When your captain is not only a useless footballer but also a frightened cunt he needs binning off into eternity. Deary fucking me

  76. Emiratesstroller

    Tony

We can argue ad infinitum about who is to blame for Arsenal’s decline, but
the reality is that our squad is unbalanced and needs surgery particularly in
    the defensive department.

It does not matter how brilliant or effective Aubameyang and Lacazette are in
the goalscoring department if the rest of team are below par.

  77. Receding Hairline

Valentin here blowing his load over Emery

Why is Jardim still bottom of the table in Ligue 1 Val? You have no right going after posters here who were willing to give a coach more than a season before making their minds up if you are still running interference for a coach who narrowly avoided relegation and is now heavily flirting with it again.

  78. Tony

    ES
2:0 up and controlling the game where the commentator said we were technically more gifted than Watford in the first half and why we were winning.

At Emery’s insistence to play out from the back we gifted Watford a goal as they were going through their pressing motions.

After that Watford were in the ascendency and upped their game while we wilted like scared little girls who instead of rallying and taking the game to Watford while keeping the midfield tight.

Then the bizarre subs all down to Emery.

2 people to blame: Emery & Xhaka. The manager and the captain who should drive the team on to Emery’s game plan and tactics.

Yes the team has balance issues in midfield and poor defense but Emery has no idea how to deal with the PL pure and simple.

  79. Samesong

If I was the Villa manager right now my training would be based on players attacking that short pass out of goal.

A good manager would advise to make those short passes out of goal only if a player is available.

Emery will employ the same thing this week maybe Luiz will get the dumbass crown for another week.

  80. Chris

    Valentin

I am still waiting for you to show where I have defended Emery over the past couple of weeks. If you are going to attempt to dig me out, at least provide evidence or admit you were wrong.

  81. Emiratesstroller

    Tony

Arsenal’s defence is the major problem and everything else that happens is a
    consequence.

We have conceded 3 silly penalties in 3 games and 2 goals conceded because of stupid distribution by goalkeeper and centre back from goal kicks. That is 5 goals out of 8 conceded which should have been avoided.

Two other goals in the games against Burnley and Spurs were also the consequence of bad defending.

That is going to impact on overall morale and performance of any team.

The situation has not been helped by Emery’s comments post the Spurs game
when he suggested that he was less concerned about goals conceded so long as we score goals.

My personal view is that Arsenal should reconfigure its defence with Bellerin
and Tierney in wing back positions, Chambers and Holding playing centre back and Torreira in DMF role.

That cannot be worse than what is on offer at the moment.

Also Leno must stop his short passing from goal kicks. It is putting our defence under constant pressure.I made that point in recent weeks and commentators on Sky also expressed similar opinion yesterday.

That shows a complete lack of understanding of the requirements in EPL. No
team which leaks as many goals as we do is going to finish in top 4 in league let alone win title.

  82. Chris

It’s not unreasonable to have wanted to give the coach at least a few games into the season with the new signings.

Yesterday was appalling in so many ways and for that to be all the confirmation one needs that Emery isn’t up to task isn’t reacting late.

Emery rightly takes the can but as well some of those players I don’t have a clue what they were thinking, they were away with the fairies yesterday.

I do not recall one person backing Emery to the absolute hilt on here so all this EKB nonsense is just that, nonsense.

Also I think Emery has a contract until the summer but many more performances like that and I do actually think the club will take decisive action prior to that.

  83. Guns of Hackney

Has Emery still got a job? If so, why?

Abject performance once again from the billionaires at The Emirates.

This isn’t Arsene’s team anymore so…this is all on Emery. All of it.

Who buys Luiz and makes Xhaka captain? A total knob, that’s who.

  84. Emiratesstroller

I would hope that Bellerin and Tierney will make us defensively more solid in
wing back positions when fully fit.

However, we need replacements for both Maitland-Niles and Kolasinac in squad.
Neither is good enough to play in that position. In short term I would replace
AMN with Chambers or even Mustafi [god forbid]. At least they are defenders!!!

  85. Guns of Hackney

    Emery is now drowning.

He’s basically fast tracked himself into Crazy Wenger but about 14 years early.

    Too hot. Really? REALLY!

This guy can’t get away with this bs as no one likes him. Wenger already had the club in the palm of his hand before he started spouting mental shit.

    Emery out!!!!

  86. Leftsidesanch

As I said before I even saw Aubas comments, that he must be fed up of putting this side into a decent position only for his teammates to squander the hard work.

Playing out from the back is a dangerous tactic if you don’t have the skill and calmness in position to do so. We don’t. Yet it kept happening, after Watford scored from it we were still doing it. Unbelievably stupid.

We’ve kept one clean shit this season with Chambers in the side and he’s lost his place to Luiz who is directly at fault for at least 3 goals, arguably 4.

Why I say he’s Wenger pt.II is because Luiz and Sok and certainly his favourites Xhaka and Guen (who also had a bad game) will start at all costs. I’m comforted that such a stubborn man likely won’t be here this time next year. Even if we get top 4 he should still go. There have been zero defensive improvements, he’s just a clown who tries too clever for his own good.

  87. Mark

Interesting that Le Grove and the Gooner forum ( slightly more reserved usually ) are singing with one voice. Emery out!
18 months of mangled communication which should now be much clearer . Poor substitutions , the worst captain since the last one. Now we are terrified of bottom feeders.
The dreadful end of campaign run appears to be continuining . Time for Freddy to show what he can do.

  88. Valentin

    Receding,

You behave exactly like I wrote.

Instead of accepting that Emery is out of his depth, you are just digging your heels and trying to justify your love of Emery and push the responsibilities of the fiasco to anybody but him.

But because you know that after such abject performance that won’t fly, you deflect by making your usual “what about that” snarky comment that is completely irrelevant to the original point made. Attacking people who disagree with you on their past comments, hoping that nobody would notice that Classic deflection tactic.

  89. Northbanker

I saw enough after Liverpool and stated then that the tactical naivety and poor decision making of Emery meant he needed ousting straight away before the season descended into farce.

Raul needs to act quickly on this – let’s not wait for the inevitable. Get rid of him today and appoint Freddie as caretaker.

  90. Guns of Hackney

    Agree with NB.

Give Freddy the season and get a new guy in ASAP.

Emery is done. These aren’t hard games at all and we should be winning them easily.

    Sixth or seventh.

  91. Champagne charlie

Arsenal aren’t paying extra to sack a coach mid-season, we’re too wet noodle for that.

That said, if we continue kicking the can when Allegri is literally chilling then we’re daft as it comes.

  92. vickingz

You are wasting your time arguing with emery’s fanboys. They can’t argue logically and they don’t read to learn. They will alter records just to prove their meaningless points. Emery is the clearest definition and face of cluelessness. I hated wenger and called for his head but at least we were still playing good football compared to what we have been playing under his eminence, emery.

  93. vickingz

If anyone could remember what I said here during the transfer window when we were signing players, I said if only we could sign a new brain for emery. The guy is not cut out for arsenal. How can coaches with lesser quality materials be consistently schooling emery? Zhaka said they knew what was coming in the second half, they didn’t plan for it but they were scared, that’s all about Emery. How difficult was it to plan for something you knew was gonna happen? Watford could have flogged us yesterday, we hung on by the skin of our teeth. Even when we were 2 nil up, you just knew we didn’t know what we were doing, we weren’t in command of the game despite going up 2 nil. Emery out

  94. Silverhawk

    You know what scares me?

Tierney coming into the side and losing all his defensive prowess.

This is arsenal. A club where defenders come to and get worse.

The only defender that got better in recent history is Koscielny. And that’s saying a lot.

  95. HillWood

The second half looked like a bunch of random punters in a pub decided to wander down the road to the park and have a bit of a kick about. Then a couple of local kid wandered past and were invited to join in
I honestly cannot remember a more shambolic or unprofessional display from the club

  96. Guns of Hackney

Also, I said it yesterday and so did a few others but Pepe needs to smarten up quick time. He is well on his way to being Gervinho mkII.

The poor decision making. The zero end product. The head down and run disease. It’s all there. I don’t think Emery can change it so we need a new man to bring out the best of Pepe.

People were sold on his Ligue form…BS. Laca looked like one of the best in the world in France. Not exactly the case here.

Emery will never enhance a player but he definitely can make them worse.

    Emery out.

  97. terraloon

This wasn’t a smash and grab and yes a two goal lead is a tricky one but let’s not kid ourself Watford were better not just deserving of the point they bossed the game and it was Arsenal that were very very lucky to ge5 anything out of the game.

The defensive unit is quite simply not a unit it’s a bunch of individuals who clearly have been told what to do and are unable to adapt as situations arise.

Luiz hadn’t given a penalty away in the PL since 2011 then he ships up at Arsenal and bang two in four games, and there will be more. For me the players around him don’t help him and let’s be honest if your expecting him to regularly cover up their mistakes he is going to give away a fair few penalties or free kicks in very dangerous positions.

The lack of positional awareness, height and lack of concentration from midfield is for me is alarming.

Not one of Arsenal’s midfielders assist the defence but it’s Guendozi that I will single out. He flatters to deceive in that he charges around in midfield some say it’s great that he is all over the place but by so doing he opens up angles and space for opposition players to simply play through Arsenals midfield and are at the retreating and panicking defence in an instance . Guendozi is not able to concentrate on what’s going on around him and that leads to him playing blind passes he isn’t an asset he is a total liability

The biggest concern going forward is that the last windows transfer activity should have been a springboard and I know that we are yet to see Turney and the returning Holding and Bellerin in defence but the midfield is pretty much set for the season and unless something drastic happens then it’s going to be a long hard slog and should two from United, Chelsea or Spurs get their acts together then a top four finish is just a pipe dream.

  98. China1

I don’t have too many concerns about Pepe because he’s extremely talented. Gervinho was not even a little bit in comparison

But Pepe is playing poorly and looks low on confidence. He’s very quiet on the pitch and doesn’t communicate with his team mates. Language surely plays a part but doesn’t Auba speak French? He needs to communicate with auba more and use French for now if necessary. It’s better than silence

But the manager needs to put his arm around him and help him adapt because he obviously hasn’t hit the ground running. He looks like the new kid on the playground with no friends. But he’s an amazing talent and he’s only just joined, so the manager needs to work out how to settle him sharpish and he too needs to smarten up a bit as his end product is way off so far.

Dare I say it, I’m not convinced emery knows how to help Pepe because his attention is busy on other weird shit playing out from the back.

  99. China1

Guns laca isn’t a world class goal scorer but he’s a quality player and one of the two reasons we didn’t come mid table last season.

Without his work rate, pressing, winning the ball back upfield, assists, goals and ability to work things out in dead end situations, we’d not have even qualified for the Europa league last season.

  100. China1

Just think how dumb that too hot comment is. That’s unreal ridiculousness

That would be like David Beckham is in Madrid and it’s unusually mild. 10 degrees with drizzle and the English manager takes him off saying ‘it’s a bit miserable for him today’

    Whaaaaaaaaat

  101. Valentin

    China1,

I don’t think that Pepe problems have anything to do with him being low in confidence and lack of communication with his teammates. In my opinion Emery setup just does not suit him. He is very good in quick transitions, but Arsenal does not do quick counter-attacks. The slow ponderous build from the back approach that Emery is focusing on is just the antithesis of the football that Lille used to play.

  102. Tony

Pepe looks lost and uncomfortable as well as not being up to PL speed to add to China’s observations.

Didn’t Henry go around 9 games before bagging his first?

  103. Guns of Hackney

Pepe is not an Henry situation.

Pepe strikes me as a fragile kind of guy. If he doesn’t produce anything fast, he’ll crack.

  104. Gentlebris

It was a hot day yesterday but since Watford players had ice under their skin the hot day only affected Emery’s Arsenal.

Auba, Laca and Pépé will win us some. So generally you can’t expect any calamity just first class mediocrity. And if Raul and Edu would ride with mediocrity and wait for calamity before they fire this Spanish plumber, then not much has changed at Arsenal.

  105. Gentlebris

Pépé is a fine player but I think he’s getting scared. Players like that live off numbers. You will see the Pépé we bought after grabbing a brace somewhere.
No problem at all, me guy will come good.

  106. Spanishdave

Looking at our back fourits a wonder we even manage a point.
We must have the weakest defence in the league, it’s only Auba scoring that helps us out.
Bellerin is not great and it shows you how desperate we are looking forward to him returning.
Emery is out of his depth and cannot cope with the expectations of being an Arsenal manager.
He a mid table manager where a good cup run is the only goal.
He’s had 60 games and the season is starting how it finished in the last one.
We are becoming a laughing stock again.

  107. Emiratesstroller

Anyone playing in front of Maitland-Niles is going to struggle in the current team.

That applies sadly to our right centre backs as well. It is no accident that both Mustafi and Sokratis have struggled. Neither is a great CB, but playing alongside AMN means that you are having to do the job of two defenders on the right side of our defence.

Emery has failed to appreciate that problem since Bellerin got injured.

Pepe has not played particularly well since he joined us, but I would not give
up on him as quickly as some do. What we are learning is that he is certainly not the finished product and most probably was worth somewhat less than the £72 million we paid for him.

  108. Bojangles

Let me say first up, I don’t give a shit if Emery goes tomorrow or the end of season. Have to say that otherwise the small group of posters here who may provide the answer to the missing link if they subjected themselves to scientific testing will brand me an Emery apologist or some other unimaginative phrase with cunt tacked on the end. But this is not a post about the coach.

In all my years of watching Arsenal in particular and football in general in 4 continents I have never seen a more insipid, unergetic or unprofessional display as I witnessed in the second half of last night’s game. With the exception of Ceballos (I have no idea why he was taken off) and Leno there is no player that left the pitch at the end of the game that should not have felt ashamed. Each and every one of them should have their pay docked for the week, failing that come under investigation by the fraud squad for masquerading as professional footballers. On that display not one of them deserves to wear the Arsenal shirt.
