Paternity leave outrage shines light on regressive realities of competition

by .

Oh man, it’s so fucking great to support a club that offers its players paternity leave. We’re so modern and trailblazing. I love it.

Yeah people, did you hear? Granit Xhaka has been given a month off to be with his newborn. Isn’t that wonderful?

I am of course joking here… this is one of the weirdest stories in sport.

Footballers are basically like part-time workers. Sure, there are away games, but overall, they have 2-3 hour training sessions, maybe a bit of video analysis. Put it this way, Mesut Ozil has so much spare time on his hands he’s in the top 5% of Fortnite gamers in the world. He’s basically a pro. There are lots of examples of footballers managing to balance the beautiful game AND get their gold handicaps down to basically zero (pro level). I think part of the Gareth Bale/Zidane beef is literally golf.

The news is coming from Switzerland.

“There are more special things in life than football. For example, when you become a father”

I’m probably reaching… my gut reaction is that blowing off your team for a month seems quite, I don’t know, anti-sport… but the other part of me thinks that, damn, maybe that’s a regressive view. He’s a human. He wants to spend the first month with his wife. That’s a good thing.

I work in America. I am already in disagreements with my GF about taking paternity for a child I do NOT have on the way. Why would I think such things? The true nature of business in a competitive environment is that someone is always there, waiting, with a knife, ready to slice your throat. My own adventurous/debilitating paranoia plays a commanding role in this, sure, but there’s a hint of truth there which is probably bad for society as a whole.

This Xhaka situation is the m/paternity nightmare everyone goes through.

Xhaka, 26 (36 in working years), has two talented kids (cheaper) ready to take his place indefinitely if they have a good month. Willock and Matteo have a huge chance to win out long-term here. That means LT will have a chance to reimpose himself onto the first team. For Xhaka, it’s a huge risk for someone who isn’t rocking 65 hr weeks as it is. Also, football is a lot less advanced than most other businesses, empathy not being its strong-suit… what does ducking a month tell the manager?

Still, at least it’ll shine a light on the truth. We’re either going to shine without him, or it’ll look very Gilberto Silva back in the day (bad). For reference, no one had ever seen a midfielder that marked space back in the day. We’d also never seen a Brazilian that wasn’t electric. People wondered about his usefulness, then he picked up an injury and we all missed him.

I would trace a lot of this: ‘Oh, you don’t get football if you don’t get X’ because of Gilberto. No fan wants to be seen as the ingrate that doubted Gilberto, so people do the math.

Terrible player keeps getting played + expensive managers keep playing him / Hedged bet that there’s some underlying reason he’s player = I’ll look like a sage if I too back him with vague assessments of his talents.

Denilson, Senderos, Xhaka, Ozil, Nik B, Randall…

Anyway, back to Xhaka. The notion that we gave a player that makes a horrendous amount of errors the captains’ armband also amazes me. A leader should be absolutely accountable to the team. To hear him basically roll Auba and Laca under bus post Spurs was quite incredible. Keep your thoughts to yourself when you’re an radical error-ist, especially when talking about two players that have gone above and beyond for the team to keep them semi-competitive.

Hopefully, we’re waiting for the return of Hector to make an announcement.

… I’d be suggesting Matteo if it were a year on. We should let him grow before we burden him with any additional responsibility. Didier Deschamps has sent some fingers wagging our way because of that exact last sentence.

“Do not ask too much, he’s a young player, who is still the Espoirs generation, who plays a lot of matches with Arsenal where there is strong competition,”

“He’s the modern midfielder, box to box as they say there, with a lot of power and technical quality too. He’s there. What I expect from young people is that they bring this freshness, this dynamism.”

Love to read the plaudits he’s picking up, but Deschamps is correct. Two parts to this:

  1. Don’t call him a fraud if has a bad run. Kids aren’t consistent, he’s still only 20. There will be a dip.
  2. I hope Arsenal don’t butcher his growing body. Jack Wilshere was overplayed at 18, and we paid heavily for that. I think it’s hard not to argue that red zoning him ruined his career. He lost motivation with all the knocks and struggled to live up to the hype.

On that note, I shall hand the comments over to you! x

Xhaka getting a month off is a blessing in disguise. Matteo LT and Cellabalos should own the midfield. I am sure we will be in much better shape without Xhaka.

If we win at Old Trafford with the above midfield it will be very very difficult for Xhaka to break in unless some one gets injured.

Ashwin Gunner

Pedro

I am sure there are millions of other footballing reasons why Xhaka should never have got the arm band. Non Availability for a month doesnt even come close

Ashwin Gunner

“Denilson, Senderos, Xhaka, Ozil, Nik B, Randall…”

The biggest insult to Ozil can be the fact that he has stooped down to the league of players mentioned above.

Marko

I wonder given its a post about Xhaka if it’s okay to discuss Xhaka. Charles is that okay?

Moving along don’t read too much into the paternity stuff it’s fairly common in sports people taking a bit of time off for the birth of a child but they’re usually back fairly quickly. This idea of a month off is laughable but it fits in nicely with a common theme that takes place around here. Anyway I personally wouldn’t mind a spell on the sidelines for him ahead of a move away from the club next summer

HighburyLegend

The more childs Xhaka will have, the better for Arsenal.
Get back to work, Granit!! lol

azed

Xhaka taking the month off is a blessing for everyone.
Matteo , Willock and Torriera get to prove that we don’t need Xhaka

Emery is saved from himself by not picking Xhaka….If we miss Xhaka, he can look us in the face and say “you guys know nothing” if we succeed then he should be sacked if he decides to play Xhaka(Pedro and co win)

jwl

I thought Xhaka paternity break was a joke, apparently not.

Why does he need a break? Footballers make huge wages and they are part time workers like Pedro says. Surely Xhaka wife or nanny can watch child between 9:00-12:00 while Xhaka at training and he can be parenting a lot with all free time he has.

I also saw article that men need to get their wives pregnant now and will qualify for paternity leave during next summer world cup.

WengerEagle

Nearly forgot that Gilberto Silva existed.

Very underrated cog in the team but about as far away from your archetypal Brazilian player as you could get, on and off the field.

Words on a Blog

I think the club and everybody in here should stay woke and let Xhaka go for broke: a paternity break until the end of the season* is the only policy that is progressive enough for me.

Would kill for the Arsenal Gilberto Silva instead of Xhaka in this side.

Gilberto Silva actually had maturity in his game and was wise in his positioning on the field unlike our Granit.

Gilberto Silva would also be clear candidate for the captaincy role as clear as day as we have all mentioned before the sparsity of players that are true captain material in this present squad.

Marko

Gilberto was a fantastic player. Very solid and consistent

Guns of Hackney

Imagine Xhaka pumping away at you? Oh god…breakfast, lunch and dinner all coming up.

Is the paternity leave thing real. I read somewhere he was gonna be out next month during the international break which means he’ll only miss the International games. I think 1 month off for footballers for any reason bar injury or security is more than required. They have to train 2-3 hours a day and then match once a week or twice. Thats that. One or Two weeks around the labour time is acceptable but month seems too much. But some things are bigger than Football.

Wasi

“should arsenal be looking at Raul Jimenez wolwes in jan ??”
When you have Auba and Laca and an incoming Nketiah. I dont think so.

I think that Chelsea struggle and finish 7th/8th this season. Lampard will want to put in a good showing in the CL and they don’t have the squad for it, their PL form will suffer.

Ship far too many goals and are relying on Tammy Abraham for a primary goal source. Pulisic will do well but he’s not even close to making the sort of impact that Hazard did and he absolutely carried them last season.

United have enough in Martial, Rashford and Pogba to finish 5th for me. Daniel James looks to have goals in him too.

Dream Leipzig might well pull it off, Poulsen discovering his goalscoring touch has helped relieve the burden on Werner for goals massively. They are comfortably the strongest defence in the league so it pretty much hinges on their attacking players really showing out for the season. They badly need Emil Forsberg to rediscover his 16/17 form, been all too patchy since then. Don’t know if I trust them to close out a league winning campaign over the vast experience and offensive power of Bayern with Lewandowski, Coman, Gnabry, Muller, Coutinho, Perisic. H2H games may well be the decider as they… Read more »

Smart money is on City but just have a feeling that Klopp will be hell-bent on that PL title now that he’s got the CL monkey off his back. They finished with 97 points last season and a CL trophy and you could very easily argue that Salah and Firmino weren’t even at their best and had much better campaigns in 2017/18.

Pep will be the opposite, gunning for CL glory above all else as he hasn’t reached a CL Final in 8 seasons. I’m sure he’d happily trade the domestic quadruple to Klopp for the CL.

Sucks though that Timo Werner is a near guarantee to join Bayern on a free at the end of the season once again killing the competition and making Bayern invincible in one fell swoop.

Lewandowski is still at his peak but in Werner they have his heir for the next decade.

Matteus Cunha could be a surprise package for Leipzig this season.

Marko

Werner signed a new deal. So Bayern will have to pay for him

Dream10

Wenger Eagle

Werner signed a new deal till 2023. I can see one of Liverpool or Chelsea offering 60-70m to sign him next summer. Bayern wanted him next summer on a free.

WengerEagle

How are Galatasaray signing all of these lads? Falcao, Seri, N’Zonzi, Babel, Lemina.

Going to blitz that Turkish League.

WengerEagle

Did not know that. In this market to be honest 60-70m for him would be a complete snip. Would like us to dip in there for him at that price, guy’s a future world beater.

Top Germans generally end up at Bayern though. Kroos being the exception but that was more down to his contract situation and the opportunity for the Alonso swap.

Dissenter

No footballer should get one month off to care for a newborn. The post natal woman doesn’t get that much in the states FFS.
2-3 days… a week but never one month during the season. He still found the time to play for Switzerland so it’s not a critical need.
David Silva didn’t get one month even though his baby was born early pre-term.
There’s a bit of soft touch about Arsenal still.

Up 4 grabs now

Please don’t mention Xhaka and Gilberto in the same sentence.
Gilberto was absolute quality who held the midfield together with Vieira.
Wenger got rid way to soon, so the likes of song and denilson could play.
We haven’t ever replaced Gilberto, and that’s why our defence has looked so poor with no protection in front of it all these years.

DigitalBob

Werner has a buyout clause in his contract apparently. Can go for about 30 million euros this coming summer.

Guns of SF

Doesn’t Gilberto have a son? Need to recruit him…

Up 4 grabs now

Dissenter give him the next two years off since no one wants to buy him.
Only way we’re getting shot of him, Is paternity leave.

Up 4 grabs now

Maybe he can get mustafi to baby sit. Two birds one stone.

DigitalBob

Paternity leave is a blessing in disguise for Emery re Xhaka.

Xhaka is dropped without any confrontation, baring a collapse or some terrible performances from LT, Dozi, Willock or Ceballos he wont see the first 11 again.

All sets up for a nice summer move back to germany.

MidwestGun

I feel like this is Raul being Raul… Ok Granit here are your choices… Terrorized by a Turkish gang… loaned to Siberia….. Dead body found in your back yard with incriminating evidence… or You could take a month or two off to babysit your nanny.

Guns of SF

Good ebening Grovers, I think between Xhaka stating he’s carrying a bit of a knock and the paternity stories the PR team are being nudged by Raul and Edu, who are also responsible for Xhaka’s being removed from Emery’s options. Hopefully this means we get to see LT with Guen and Ceballos as our preferred midfield trio with Willock & Ozil backup/rotation. I also think January could potentially see the exits of Mustafi, Xhaka and maybe even Ozil depending on how well our midfield and youngsters are faring up, and moves for Upamecano and that highly rated youngster from Real… Read more »

Reading what (X)haka said my take was that he’s sitting out the next round of international fixtures. Players don’t get a month off on paternity leave during the course of the season. Doesn’t happen.

If (X)haka not playing for us it’s because he is injured, suspended or dropped. In that order.

Luteo Guenreira

When Xhaka was still at Gladbach he was being compared to Xabi Alonso. It’s funny to think about it now.

Vintage Gun

(X)haka’s a good player but just not for this league, for obvious reasons,
Serie A would be perfect for the technical slug. And to be fair he sounded quite happy with himself when he was questioned about rumours of Inter Milan swooping in for him over the summer.

Distant legrover

This is the decision that will lose Xhaka his place in the team. You would think a guy who is already under fire for his underperformance would be wanting to bust his ass extra for the team. But no after the red cards, penalties and all the errors this guy wants to take a month off. Fans, pundits, rival fans/teams all agree we can do better. Even Auba liked posts calling for his replacement, twice. And with Ceballos, LT, and Guendozi being called to replace him in the team, he wants to take a month off. This is a blessing… Read more »

Smart fella. Raul I suspect.

A partnership will be formed, too good to fool around with. Guen and Willock I suspect, LT breathing down their necks; Xhaka out of consideration.

Good news is our guy has got some ego, he wouldn’t sit on the bench and accept the situation. He will find an Italian Club and take a pay cut if the situation demands it.

I m really hoping that is the case. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we ‘ve dropped out of the top 4 since Xhaka became a starter in midfield. Midfield is that important in the team, and if one of the elements or both are flawed then the team will.

1. 1 TEASPOON OF VEGETABLE OIL
2.1 TEASPOON OF PLAIN DISHWASHING LIQUID

Spray solution over both sides of leaves.
Rinse Tree after few hours with water.

The tinkerer! A genius football scientist. He never believes in natural solutions. If it’s not complex he doesn’t believe it will work.

Bojangles

The idea of paternity leave for footbsllers is ludicrous. One match is the maximum number a player need miss and that only if the birth of his child falls on that match day.In Xhaka’s case, any reason that keeps him away from the team is valid but giving him paternity leave sets a precedent. Nobody will be happy if, say Laca is granted paternity leave with a couple of must win games approaching.

Gentlebris

‘Xhaka paternity leave is the equivalent of AW leaving by mutual agreement!’

Wenger didn’t leave by mutual agreement. He looked like he was heading for the electric chair in his last game. Wenger was pushed out with full force.

Still a better football coach than this genius though. At least he kept things simple.

Had he allowed himself some help and had someone like Raul doing the deals, Wenger would have done okay in those years he fucked up.

Gentlebris

‘Xhaka’s case, any reason that keeps him away from the team is valid but giving him paternity leave sets a precedent. Nobody will be happy if, say Laca is granted paternity leave with a couple of must win games approaching.’

It sets no precedence. The guys are not dumb. They know Xhaka is being sidelined. Raul saw a solution in the situation and tapped into it. Everyone knows, Xhaka too. So no precedence.

Bojangles

So you feel that because Raul has come up with a bit of trickery, that excludes it from setting a precedence.

“The word precedence signifies a previous instance or legal decision upon which future instances are based.”

To me allowing Xhaka paternity leave will be seen as a previous instance, whether due to trickery or otherwise.
