All eyes on Emery’s tactics

The final hurrah of Nacho Monreal sadly will NOT be scoring a 32-yard screamer against Spurs tomorrow. The Spanish left back will instead be heading back to sunnier climes, choosing Real Sociedad to see out his career.

I think I speak for most Arsenal fans… no… ALL Arsenal fans, even you @BREXITGOONER1 (my dad), when I say: Bit of an odd one, this.

We’re banking on Kola learning how to defend, and we’re putting a lot of chips on Tierney  1) Adapting to the league like VVD 2) Breezing past his fitness challenges of the last year.

Still, it is what it is. Nacho is getting on a bit and his hamstrings and body parts will all be a touch more brittle than in the past. I’d imagine he’s at that age when you grunt when you pick up a slipper and he’s at that age when the slipper is probably his. He’s also probably wearing those slippers to the newspaper shop as well. Age is a bitch, but damn, we’ll do it in M&S levels of comfort.

I get the logic behind not having 3 left backs as well, we can’t keep pumping money into the ether. I just thought that if anyone set a great example for professionalism at the club, it was Nacho. He never let us down. He was a true warrior. He was an excellent player.

I remember about 5 years ago, Arsenal let a bunch of us interview him. His English was a bit broken and he was asked a question about what he thought we needed.

‘Someone who can score more than 20 goals a season regularly’, then his agent whispered something to him and he backtracked as hard as his words would allow. We went off the record so as not to cause a stir. But today, I’m causing a stir because Giroud is at Chelsea and who really cares this far out?

Manchester United drew with Southampton today. A great start to a big weekend for Arsenal. Only thing that’s bothering me there is that OGS is going to end up getting sacked before Christmas if he doesn’t pick things up a little. Would love him to have the whole season. Give him a chance, Ed.

The news coming out of the Spurs camp is delightful. Poch is unhappy. His team is disrupted. He has four players angling for an exit, names like Aurier, Eriksen, Vertonghen and Toby. Their squad is finally picking up injuries, there should be no Ndombele, Dier or right back tomorrow. The press were asking if he’d leave this week.

Spurs are there for the taking.

My hope is that Emery can avoid being timid in this game. I don’t want to see us lined up with a deep block on the edge of our box. I don’t want to see us persisting with playing out the back if it looks like Spurs have that sussed. I don’t want us playing for a quick counter-attack at home.

We have the tools in our squad to play to win. Spurs are in a bit of a hole, if we gift them too much respect, we’ll make it hard for ourselves. When confidence is shaken, strike hard and strike first. Test their collective resolve.

I talk like Spurs are totally shite, chances are they’ll turn up because of the magnitude of the game. I just hope we’re positive. Emery plays with too much fear and indecision in big games. I hope that’s just Liverpool jitters… because the fans are not going to gift him a 50/50 split on tomorrow regardless of what he does tactically. It’s a must-win against a team that finished 1 point ahead of us last season.

Win this, and we’re telling the league that we’re here for the top 3 this year, lose, and you’ll start to worry if Emery has the beans to push the squad forward this season.

Our underlying stats have been poor this season. You only have to take a cursory looks across the numbers sites to see that we’re not in great shape. This from Statsbomb.

‘It’s well known that shot rates tend to increase as matches progress, so even when you see a 30-plus shot beatdown, most of the time, the shots get racked up in the second half. And that’s true here. Only four times in 2018-19 did a team reach the half time point having allowed 15 or more shots.’

That number above is quite staggering to read when you’re setting up to stifle attempts at your goal. Add to that, Arsenal has turned the ball over in their own half more than any other team in the league, and you can see a problem brewing. I say brewing because Liverp0ol was a particularly bad execution of what could be passed off as a new strategy against a new rule (I am reaching so badly for the Emeryista here).

A pal in my ArsenalMensSupport chat groups pointed out, Arsenal’s lack of expenditure at the back this summer points to a club not taking defence particularly seriously. The statistics early on this season point, mapped against last, point to a manager not capable of creating a defensive structure that can serve an elite team.

I don’t know what the exact solve is, but my amateur thoughts have led me to this:

  1. Be less predictable. If you play out the back every time, you make it easy to set up against. Being dedicated to an idea is commendable, but if it’s not working, mix things up. It shouldn’t take 80mins for a keeper to go long once. Even mix up the variety of how you do it. You can play from the back and have a more vertical approach.
  2. Do it faster. If you are slow and methodical at moving it out the back, you let teams reset, which again, makes it easy to play against you.
  3. Stop playing staff that are prone to being targeted. Xhaka is well known to be awful when put under pressure. Stop playing him.

Let’s see what Emery has in store tomorrow. He’s a tactically flexible coach, he needs to think a little deeper about what he wants from his defence this year. Hopefully, there’s a simple solution he can adopt.

In other news, Elneny is off to Turkey. Nice guy, about as useful to the squad as a motivational bus driver. Mustafi did not leave, an absolutely disgraceful indictment on his passion for the game. I really hope Emery doesn’t start using him. Keep him frozen out. Mesut Ozil also didn’t leave, he’ll be a bit part this season until he moves on to DC. Say what you will about the German, he’s at least useful.

Finally, listen to our pre-Spurs pod.

    “Zakaria”

Good physical attributes but he himself is a bit scatty defensively at this point.

    Fuck these Swiss I say.

  2. Marko

He’s done it with Mustafi, he’s done it with Ozil…why can he not do it with Xhaka?

This is a good point. He can’t be so afraid to shitcan the idiot. Trepidation about Willock being ready or Torreira’s consistency isn’t enough because Xhaka is actually costing us games

  3. Un na naai

Some players are clearly dispensable, but at what point do we have an inquest as to why we can’t limit a side to less than 10 shots in a game. We’re all over the place. 51 last season, 6 in 4 so far this term.

    Champagne Charlie
You’re absolutely spot on but as the old adage goes, coaching is fanciful….

Seriously though he clearly doesn’t possess the aptitude to knit a defence, a midfield or an attack
There doesn’t seem to be any cohesion at all. It’s been over a year and he’s pretty much playing marko-ball

Just get the best players you can and hope for the best. There doesn’t seem to be any understanding or synchronicity among the team mates.
They are all riffing and jamming rather than synchronised

  4. Un na naai

    Eagle

Really? I thought Torreira was our best midfielder in the first half even though he was used as an attacking mid

    Emery is fucking wasting him

  5. Leftsidesanch

We need a fix this season TR7. I think what is irritating posters is that we all know Xhaka will play barring suspension or injury.

The commentators were both laughing at him at one point.

  6. Samesong

    PieAFC

That’s what I mean, there was no way the manager was taking him off. Picking Xaka as club captain was a big Emery mistake that will cost him his job.

  7. WengerEagle

    Unn

Na he was pretty flaky for me, has no real presence in there and he’s not good enough on the ball to compensate for it imo. It’s easy to put all the blame on Xhaka but Toreirra keeps turning in mediocre outings for us.

Don’t think that he’ll make it over here, see him ending up back in Italy within the next year or two.

  8. Cesc Appeal

    Un

There still so much bias toward Spurs.

The Mail is my go to sports section but they are so pro-Spurs it is crazy. Today was ‘Red Redemption’ as Aubameyang’s ‘late intervention’ rescues a point…what game were they watching? A more fitting take would be Spurs survive and hang on after dropping a 2 goal lead at the Emirates to a rampant second half Arsenal display.

    TR7

I’m not the biggest fan of Bellerin but he’s an actual full back unlike Maitland Niles and will certainly improve us. Tierney as well just needs to have a steady season going forward and defensively at LB and he will be a drastic improvement already.

Holding and Luiz should give us a more physical looking CB pairing as well, both are 6ft 2, I think, and both don’t mind the ball at their feet.

Bellerin, Holding, Luiz and Tierney at least on paper looks good.

We really need that commanding CDM/CM though, a big, physical, athletic player.

  9. karim

The early Laca subs last year, the way we bottled the end of the season and now his obsession with Xhaka and playing from the back.

People’s loudest concerns with the manager.

  10. Globalgunner

Hoddle like a typical Spud thinks the kane Sok incident was a pen. Claims Sokratis pushed him. two players running beside each other, 1 steps in front of the other. How is that a push. Kane stays in his lane and there will be no contact.
    Spuds are just divers

  11. Un na naai

    Eagle

I can see him going back but I don’t agree with your analysis
Emery is misusing him. He’s got everything in his locker to succeed but playing him box to box or attacking mid in a dysfunctional midfield isn’t helping any of them

It almost looks like a free for all at the park

  12. Valentin

    Ishola70,

Reread my comments since the beginning of the season.
After the Burnley game I even stated that Willock-Guendouzi with Ceballos further up should be our main trio in midfield.

  13. Olumide

    Samesong
Xhaka will probably get Emery the sack if he continues using him. Caused 2 penalties last season which lost us 4 points.
A penalty today again. 2 points dropped.
I know Xhaka isn’t the only player on the pitch. But 1-1 going to half time would have been better.

  14. Marko

Doucoure wouldn’t really solve this issue with DM we have. He’d help out tremendously with ball retention though. I personally can’t look past Sangare due to his age his potential and his price. Would consider Marc Roca as well he’s quality

  15. Un na naai

    Ca

Yeah that’s a crazy take on the match
Spurs were fucking lucky to get away with a point at the end
Gifted two goals and clinging in for dear life until xakha sent himself off

  16. Un na naai

Sol Campbell is a terrible talker
Doesn’t seem to be able to convey his thoughts. Trips up in his own words
    Maybe nervous being on tv

  17. raptora

I’m not Emery out yet. But him picking Xhaka time and time again will cost him his head. If when Holding is ready to start and Emery doesn’t make Luiz and Holding the CB pair and keeps on playing Sokratis, it’s gonna be on him again.

    Ideal 11 imo:

    Leno
    Bellerin Holding Luiz Tierney
    Torreira Ceballos Guendouzi
    Pepe Lacazette Aubameyang

If one of them is healthy, is in contention to play, but Emery doesn’t play him, then Emery will take all the blame for me. Like today. Picking Xhaka was a massive mistake and it cost us. Sokratis is a bad player and it cost us. Mkhitaryan is basically a nothing player. Same goes to Ozil.

Strategy was not terrible today, but the individual errors were soooooo many… You cannot say that we deserved to win if you look at Xhaka and Sok basically playing against us. We basically beat ourselves… Again….

  18. Leftsidesanch

And he wasn’t happy when his precious Xhaka was mentioned in the post match interview. They’ll both be out of here within a year.

  19. James wood

Socratis is unstable both on the pitch and I dare say off the pitch
Guy’s a massive liability he does not handle pressure well
Likely to cock up in the big games.

  20. PieAFC

    Samesong.

It’s almost like I feel that’s why he chose him as captain as way knowing you can’t drop him or sub him.

It will cost him massively. Pundits and fans cane see what he costs us.

Unfair on Torreria I feel, he huffed and puffed. Only him and Laca were pressing in parts.

At one stage, Laca sprinted back into our own box to help defend. What a fucking guy. Hope he’s hamstring is ok and just a precaution.

It will come together. Emery has to be careful not to invite pressure onto himself with this constant tinkering and weird team selections/formations.

AMN also didn’t play as bad as people think. Up against someone like Son, who mind is one of the best wingers in the league.

  21. Silverhawk

    My player ratings:

    Leno 6.5
    AMN 7
    Sokratis 6
    Luiz 6.5
    Kolasinac 5
    Xhaka ( – 5)
    Torreira 5.5
    Guendouzi 9
    Pepe 6.5
    Lacazette 7.5
    Aubameyang 7

    Subs:

    Ceballos 7
    Mkhitaryan 2

  22. Olumide

    Globalgunner
“Hoddle like a typical Spud thinks the kane Sok incident was a pen. Claims Sokratis pushed him. two players running beside each other, 1 steps in front of the other. How is that a push. Kane stays in his lane and there will be no contact.
    Spuds are just divers”

If Kane was an Arsenal player and Sokratis was a Spurs defender, people would see it differently. Sokratis was one of our worst performers today. Just trying to pick fights all around rather than just defend.

  23. Un na naai

On another day pepe comes away with a goal or two today
    Lloris made some quality saves

    Emery hamstrung us today

Mkhitaryan for lacazette was a game killing sub

  24. Batistuta

I think I’m just at that point with Emery where I’m glad his contract is up next summer so we don’t have to fire him and have to pay him out. He looks confused which in turn has translated to very confused choices. He has to go, maybe if we keep shipping them in and dropping silly points then maybe before December. That starting midfield was an absolute idiotic one and can’t for the life of me see why we still start games with Xhaka, I’d sooner roll the dice with Willock than have Xhaka anywhere near the squad, he’s bad.

Again, benching Ceballos meant there was no offensive minded player in the middle which meant Torriera finding himself in the opponents 18 frequently and Guendozi having to move the ball foward himself and also having to track back for defensive cover seeing as we were playing a man down with Granite in there.

The front 3 didn’t look in sync too but maybe that’ll take time but I’d rather just have Auba play through the middle, he’s at his best there.

Good games from AMN, Pepe, Laca and Auba and special shout to Guendozi who was my man of the match.

Emery though thankfully has just this season and on no basis whatsoever should he be given that extension, think that’s pretty much what we’ll look like while he’s here and that just isn’t good enough

  25. TBone

I’m not worried about Pepe. He played in the ANC and didn’t have a proper pre-season. Also, his first two starts have been against Liverpool and Tottenham, pretty much a baptism of fire. I think, once he settles in and gets his shooting boots on against some lower quality sides, he won’t look back and will become one of our key players.

  26. PieAFC

Honestly, I’ve never seen a player keen for retirement than Miki.

Overweight, lost or lack of pace. He’s sharpness is off. Has no aggression to his game. He literally looks like his footballing days are behind him.

If anyone needs a goal it’s him. Can’t think of any game he’s actually performed well for us?

  27. azed

“Mkhitaryan for lacazette was a game killing sub”
    UN
Mhkitaryan was horrible today but Nelson was so timid against Newcastle and Burnley.

  28. Marko

As well as having more balls to drop Xhaka for other players I’d really like to see Emery trust more in Martinelli or Saka or Nelson than Mhiki. I get it it’s a huge game and it’s a pressure situation for young players who aren’t ready but Mhiki isn’t getting better he’s not a long term solution to anything. Right now the only games I’d consider him in are Europa group games and league cup games

  29. HighburyLegend

Ok, I will not talk about our defence (in the most pure Arsenal “tradition”), or about Leno – his mistake apart, he was very good – or the fact that we’ve started to play only in the 2nd half – deja vu all over again.
But I’ve noticed 3 things today : a) maybe it’s just me, but I think there’s something “wrong” in the Emery/Laca relationship…. and of course I was furious when Unai has made the change Laca/Milkyway.
    b) He like and trust Xhaka – aka the walking disaster – a player who don’t even understand the rules of the sport he plays.
    c) Emery doesn’t seems to know how to use the trio Auba/Laca/Pépé – aka the attack trio which is supposed to terrify the world.
To resume : careful Unai, the pressure could fall hard on you sooner than you expect…

  30. Batistuta

Again I’d have sooner had Ozil(yea i know), Nelson or Marrinelli come in than Henrik fucking Mikhitryan….. I swear Emery just doesn’t have any clue whatsoever what he’s trying to do.

Protagonist this, Antagonist that pretty please fuck off and pick your strongest 11 every game if possible

  31. Champagne charlie

    Weagle

I’m wondering when Torreira is going to come under fire for his offerings, I can’t see what he’s bringing to the party. South American Elneny since last Jan or so, quite worrying.

Emery looks and sounds like a caretaker manager, I think his goose is cooked as far as an extension goes which says a lot. Can only hope we’re the least shit of a shitty bunch outside the top 2.

  32. raptora

Yup, Sokratis fighting over real quality defending will cost us goals. He was at fault for Pool’s first goal. At fault today because Xhaka jumped with Kane and Sokratis had to just take his position in defence where eventually Eriksen scored from. Almost red carded for the incident with Winks. Almost gave a pen away. Terrible performance. His shortcomings are really showing vs the good teams in the league.

  33. Ishola70

    Valentin

    You are backtracking.

I’m sure you would pick your darling Willock over Guendouzi if it came to the crunch but maybe not after today.

You have been massively over-rating Willock and downplaying Guendouzi these past few weeks and pre-season.

It was said on here that Guendouzi is nailed on senior player to Willock but such was the mania for the new kid on the block on here that it fell on deaf ears. Well today Guendouzi proved beyond doubt he is senior to Willock.

Nothing against Willock btw. Just don’t like to see players get over-rated before their real time that is all.

  34. Un na naai

    Anyway
    Gonna get bring now
Two week break and 5 points dropped.
Could have nicked a win and a draw the last two games if emery gets it right. He doesn’t
    Here we are

Going to be plenty of film and music talk here for two weeks
Anyone have any views on the new terminator film? New trailer looks a bit better than the previous but still looks pretty cack

First reviews in on the new joker film and it’s all 10/10

    Joaquin Pheonix is immense apparently.
    Looking forward to that

  35. Leftsidesanch

The guy has a permanent stupid look on his face and tries to be too clever for his own good. Mikki is a horrible footballer and shouldn’t play. The same with his mate Granit.

You wonder what his teammates think of him. He effectively cost this side a CL place last season.

  36. Cesc Appeal

    Un

Lacazette had to come off because he had a knock, but I would have sent on Martinelli and just told him to run at Sanchez who firstly is a CB and secondly was done at that point.

There were a couple of moments where if Mkhitaryan was faster we could have caused some serious problems.

  37. Un na naai

“Arsenal will actually be 3rd at season’s end. ”

You obviously didn’t bother to read the post or misread it.

It wasn’t about just third place. It was posters stating that Arsenal would absolutely romp to third place. Subtle difference there.

And there is still no divine right to third place this season. Good chance but no divine right.

How did you enjoy Xhaka’s performance today Sanmi?

    Sanmi another Xhaka apologist.

  40. Un na naai

I know but to lose him and bring in a non entity just killed our left side

I’d h e fine for any of our young wide players
At least they will be eager, fearless and gain experience

  41. Marko

I’m wondering when Torreira is going to come under fire for his offerings

Doing that thing again Charlie. To be fair Torreira isn’t having a huge influence but in saying that he gets marks for not costing us games on a fairly consistent basis

  42. HighburyLegend

“Lacazette had to come off because he had a knock”

Thanks for that precision Cesc. But choosing to send Mikhy on the pitch was definitely a horrible decision.

  43. Samesong

    All the stats

Tottenham have only won two of their 27 Premier League away matches versus Arsenal.

This is the 186th north London derby. Arsenal have won 77 times, Tottenham 58 with 50 draws

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored just three goals in 14 league games against sides from the established top six

Harry Kane’s record of nine goals in north London derbies is bettered only by Emmanuel Adebayor

  44. Cesc Appeal

    Un

When the Europa League starts he has to start giving time to Martinelli and Saka who looked really promising in pre-season, far more so than Nelson who’s got quite a bit of time so far.

Same is true when Smith Rowe is fit. Just use the Europa League to give young players a chance.

But certainly today Maritnelli or Saka could have caused havoc up against Sanchez for the last 15 minutes.

Yeah. Shame with terminator as with Cameron attached again I was expecting more than the pandering feminist stuff again. Some decent looking scenes but I just can’t buy into that blonde girl as the protagonist or an ancient Linda Hamilton

They need to let sleeping dogs lie now and come up with something fresh

If black mirror or rick and morty can produce some great new sci fi ideas to riff on every season then Hollywood has to come up with something

Or else just keep adapting good books. There are enough out there.

Mkhitaryan is just a ticking clock, running down his contract
Leave him out and bin him first chance we get

  48. Leftsidesanch

Pepe has good movement, quick, skillful and direct and gets himself in good positions. He got an assist today and when he’s fully up to speed will be an asset to the side.

Only because some impatient fans wanted him to have 4 goals from 4 strikes.

  49. Leftsidesanch

The players who cost us in this game were Xhaka, Sok, Kola and Mikki.

Comfort that Holding or Chambers keeps Sok out, Tierney will be 1st choice and Mikki isn’t a starter. Xhaka is the captain unofficially and will make costly mistakes all year.

  50. Ishola70

The reason Arsenal continue to play Xhaka is down to foolish false vanity.

Vanity that still stems from the Wenger days.

Xhaka is seen as a ball player. On the ball player. Fits in with protaganists line and playing the game in the “correct” manner. Even though Xhaka is not by any stretch a great on the ball player he roughly very roughly fits the description. He is after all termed a deep lying playmaker.

But these errors are getting beyond a joke now.

The vanity has to stop. Why not stop it. Wenger is no longer here anymore.

    Stop this nonsense.

  51. Receding Hairline

Have no worries with respect to Pepe.. Kid has a lot about him. Just needs that one goal to open the flood gates. He is no counter attack merchantmen, legitimate ball carrier, can turn in tight spaces, once he gets up to speed he will be a nightmare.

I have had my say on Torriera in the past,he will be back in Italy soon enough, horrible scouting, not suited to this league one bit. And no he isn’t being misused, positioning a player who can’t win headers in front of your defense is asking for trouble.

  52. Champagne charlie

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored just three goals in 14 league games against sides from the established top six“

Surprising nobody. What’s Laca’s record against top sides?

Yea the trailer I’ve seen for Terminator was just a bit “really….?” inducing you know? Nothing particularly new or fresh.

All 3 of those goals came at the Emirates vs Spurs as well, brace here last season.

Bit of a concerning stat that really, firing blanks in 12 out of 14 PL matches vs top 6 opposition. Missed penalties vs Spurs away last season to win us the match, also missed a penalty vs Citeh in his first season here.

You can tell he’s a decent little player, sound technique and does the simple things well. Not exactly a defensive colossus given his frame and height though and he’s fairly basic going forward, nowhere near the guile and penetration of Ceballos.

I don’t see Toreirra’s long term future in the PL, much more suited to a slower continental league.

“I don’t see what Guendouzi bring to the team.
His forward passing has regressed since his introduction last year. He still get caught on the ball way too much to be safe as a deep laying midfielder. His defending off the ball is not great either. Time and time you see him pointing to a teammate to follow a runner while letting his own runner go free.Defensively and offensively Joe Willock is so far ahead it would be criminal to play him ahead of our academy graduate.”

    Guendouzi MotM btw.

“Bit of a concerning stat that really, firing blanks in 12 out of 14 PL matches vs top 6 opposition. Missed penalties vs Spurs away last season to win us the match, also missed a penalty vs Citeh in his first season here.“

Yea not a player you readily look at in a big game and think no worries, he’ll boss it.

Be interested to learn who the most productive player is in our side against the top lot.

” emery who’s selecting him brain box”

When Gazidis appointed Emery he said he still wanted to keep aspects of Arsene Wenger in relation to the football.

Having a deep lying playmaker in Xhaka who can’t defend properly is so Arsene Wengerish given that Wenger neglected the DM position for so long at the club. Neglecting the importance of defensive requirements for this position.

Well Emery should say fuck Arsene Wenger.

Or maybe he is too timid to do that.

  66. Leftsidesanch

‘be interested to learn who the most productive player is in our side against the top lot.’

In terms of goals it has to be Laca.

  67. Ishola70

Torreira is useful as a high pressing midfielder who can knit the ball on occasions.

    That is it.

If he was part of an all round pressing midfield he would be valued more because he would be one of the better proponents of that pressing midfield. But with this present Arsenal team he isn’t part of a pressing midfield.

Looks a bit lost at times tbh.

  68. Receding Hairline

I keep reading we started the game with three defensive midfielders…on what planet is Xhaka a DM? He is fast becoming a nothing, hasn’t improved at all.

Ceballos needs to release the ball quicker, always looking for one more twist.

Emery needs to bench Xhaka, after today let him watch from the sidelines for a bit.

By the way Sokratis is crap…Kolasinac too. And Niles will be horrible as a winger for Bournemouth let alone Arsenal, we were on the attack today all second half and I can’t remember a contribution of note.

  69. raptora

Son is a fantastic player but he still cannot find good form regularly. When on form he’s phenomenal. Still pretty far behind Salah, Sterling, Mane, Sane. Maybe a toss up between Mahrez and him.

    Weagle
Yea I’d not be sad to see both him and Xhaka depart for more PL suited players. Both good footballers, but they’re just not able to command it here regular enough. Huge miss to ignore CM this summer, fuckin knew it too which is annoying.

I get you can’t fix all faults in a window or a year etc, but we seem to have taken an outskirts approach to the team. Tierney, Bellerin, Pepe, Auba, Laca, Leno are covered, but still soft as shit in the middle of defence, and middle of midfield.

  72. Ishola70

Thanks Raptora for confirming that Valentin was less than complimentary about Guendouzi prior.

No worries though really because Valentin overall is a good contributor.

But I hope he doesn’t become a serial fibber like Pierre.

That would spoil his good posts.

  73. Samesong

Son thrives better in the team when Kane isn’t playing. it’s almost like he’s always trying to find a pass to him rather than doing his magic stuff.

  74. Ishola70

    Don

Emery’s remit was to contain certain elements of Wenger. Gazidis made that public when hiring Emery. Doesn’t matter that Gazidis has left.

Well he’s nowhere near Wenger at his best offensively of course or on the ball.

So this token gesture to Wengerism in the side is even more stupid.

The Swiss lump is evidence of this token gesture to Wenger.

A deep lying “playmaker” who is shit defensively sitting in front of the central defence.

  75. Champagne charlie

Think I read a stat saying only 4 of 18 players that were in the squad against Chelsea in the cup final 2017 are here now.

So no, not a Wenger team. You can jog right on with those soft blows.

So who exactly is now forcing this on emery? Wenger? Gazidis? Kroenke? And why?

This is hands down the most peculiar claim I’ve seen in or grove and that’s saying something

  77. Ishola70

Son is much better than Mahrez.

    Far more influential than Mahrez.

Arsenal defence was shitting bricks every time Son got in an advanced attacking area with the ball today.

  78. raptora

A player that regularly does his thing though – “Since his Premier League debut in August 2016, no player has conceded more penalties in the competition than the five by Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka.”

Not even counting his horrific errors that have cost us god knows how many goals. At one point I was hoping that spuds score from one of his insanely stupid fouls that cut our tempo, gave spuds good chances and made it look like we were pushed in our half at the end. I hoped if we get punished by another of his “mindless lunges” (quoting SkySports there) maybe Emery benches the fker. Well if Emery keeps persisting with Xhaka, sadly he’ll be a goner in no time.

For someone who was an Xhaka apologist on here until today you seem quite sure of yourself about Xhaka.

I wonder what made you a Xhaka apologist in the first place?

I think you liked aspects of this deep lying playmaker notion regarding Xhaka.

And of course Wenger brought this deep lying playmaker to the club.

And boy is this guy a headache to the side and prolongs this Arsenal are soft defensively aspect that haunted us under Wenger for so long.

  82. TR7

Son is in the top bracket of wingers for me alongside Mane, Sane, Sterling and Salah. Salah is getting more and more predictable with every passing week but still good enough.

  83. Champagne charlie

“Well if Emery keeps persisting with Xhaka, sadly he’ll be a goner in no time.“

What’s sad about that? If the manager can’t learn from his errors and display some evolution then he’s not good enough for us. Nothing sad about that other than his employment status while actively manager.

  84. DaveB666

Dele Alli today – as shit as he was in the World Cup. Is there another more overrated footballer? Gooners rejoice – the voices of shite hart lane are still quiet!

  85. Receding Hairline

Son is a wonderful player…really wish he played for us.

Mkhi is retired but Emery still fancies him for some reason, pity because he used to be some player.

And yes I think he’s got certain qualities that were even on display today that nobody else in our squad possess but I’ve grown tired of the give away goals

  87. Ishola70

AMN was very quiet offensively today and Arsenal were attacking and on the front foot for long periods of the match and this is meant to be AMN’s best aspect his attacking play from fullback.

Well as Receding said AMN was invisible today offensively.

It was all on Kola today to attack frpm fullback and even though it didn’t come off for him at least he gave it a go unlike AMN.

  88. Marko

Son is immense. One of Wengers biggest blunders was not trying to sign him and letting him go to that lot. Up there with Gervinho over Hazard for me he was that good and obvious at Leverkusen

  89. Ishola70

I can comment on other matters of the game.

So funny that the two posters that are taking umbrage at the notion that Xhaka is the last vestige of Wenger tokenism of the side are CC and Don.

    Very coincidental.

Wenger fucked us over for years by not taking the position of DM seriously enough in regards to defensive capabilities in that position.

We still have a player who is shit defensively sitting in front of the central defence brought in by Wenger.

Emery should take the bull by the horns ditch Xhaka and stop this worthless tokenism to Arsene Wenger.

If he doesn’t he is a fool.

  90. HillWood

When Emery came to Arsenal he said he’d rather win 5-4 than 1-0
This is crux of the problem
He’s not that bothered about defending

  91. raptora

I’m still disappointed by the game today. Losing by 2 goals and then winning a point to a team that finished ahead of us last year and played a final in the UCL should have been a good result.

But I can’t keep myself from being disappointed. Spuds have not been all that even though starting Eriksen made them a much better team than the one that played vs Newcastle. Why do we even allow the opponent to score 2 retarded goals? They were there for the taking. But suddenly we find ourselves chasing a game… Don’t play the mindless players. Give yourself the best chance to win.

  92. Champagne charlie

“So funny that the two posters that are taking umbrage at the notion that Xhaka is the last vestige of Wenger tokenism of the side are CC and Don.“

Not taking umbrage, just laughing to myself at the lengths you go when talking of Xhaka. Now Wenger is getting brought in? There must be a sock of yours that’s going to get it good and proper tonight following todays game eh

Back (via the pub) from the Emirates. A few observations:

    1) Xhaka should not be playing big matches. Too slow, too cumbersome, and consequently fouls too much – also prone to Mustafiesque brain farts. Is not a defensive midfielder, but doesn’t add anything to the attack. Ceballos should have been on instead of him.

    2) I was really, really impressed by the energy and tactical awareness of Guendouzi. He was a colossus, by far our best player. comfortably man of the match.

    3) can’t wait for Tierney to displace Kola, who today was (just about) ok defensively, but not good enough going forward.

    4) ALP/PAL was very far for clicking into place in the same way as Salah/Firmino/Mane.

    5) Mikki, what the fuck? He is the very definition of pointlessness.

Emery has to “do an Ozil” on Xhaka. His game play should be severely restricted to “safe” matches against 3rd tier opposition.

  95. Ishola70

Wenger is being brought into the discussion about Xhaka.

How crazily weird isn’t it considering Wenger brought him to the club.

AMN gets a lot of stick on here. But today he was by far (defensively and going forward) the better of the two fullbacks.

  98. Marko

To be fair there’s plenty of blame to go around for Xhaka still being at the club but for the player himself that’s solely his fault. There’s not a manager in world football who could get better defensive performances out of him. He’s just not suited to the league. They may have made the same mistake with Torreira as well (though I’m not giving up on him just yet) analytics isn’t everything. Flip side of that is analytics may have given us Guendouzi

  99. karim

Benedetto is going to score 20+ goals in France this season, just a pity he didn’t get to come to Europe earlier.
    Passion and determination

  100. Freddie Ljungberg

I’ve said for weeks now that now that Mustafi is persona non grata at the club Xhaka is our biggest problem, once Ceballos and Torreira are up to match fitness there are no excuses to play him in the league, hopefully that will be right after the international break.

The only reason I can see why he gets game time is because he’s the most experienced midfielder we have and all the rest are all young and new-ish to the PL, he’s still shit though. Both Torreira and Guen are better passers than him, the only thing he does better is his trademark lofted balls to the flanks that takes an eternity to land.

Replace him with Sangare in January and with Tierney, Bellerin and Holding back we’ll look a completely different team defensively.

Pepe just needs more time to adapt, still not a fan of playing Laca and Auba at the same time so Auba has to play out wide but it’s the best we have so needs must.

  101. HillWood

Lee Dixon , Nigel Winterbourn and Big Tone weren’t the best footballers on the planet but George Graham drilled them endlessly into the best defensive unit in the League
    Obviously Emery has different views

  102. Nelson

    Some opinions:
    – For the first goal, people blame it on PapaSok. I blame it more on Xhaka. He should be aware of the situation. PapaSok is the CB. He has the responsibility to cover Kane. Xhaka should let PapaSok jump against Kane.
    – Sub in Micki as left wing is the worst decision. A complete waste.
    – Our team will get stronger once our two starting FBs are ready.
    – Pepe needs to practice shooting. I am not worry. He’ll continue to get his chances.
    – If someone keeps making mistakes, Those are not mistakes. Xhaka is shit.

  103. Caligooner

Mostly disappointment mixed with a little relief today.

Mhki got the ball in space regularly and regularly gave it away.

Pepe was dangerous but his final ball was all over the place.

    Two great goals.

    Xhaka doing a mustafi impression.

Papa sok shithousing it up and I thought Luiz was really good today.

Kola was lazy today. His offsides on the goal was a back breaker. He also jogs back on defense which is terrible considering he’s a defender.

  104. Lari03

Mhkitaryan was a wrong sub, he was awful. Worse than Xhaka, who had a good game apart from his usual failings and his continued presence is the coach’s error.

I don’t care what anyone else thinks but until I see a double pivot of Maitland Niles and Torreira, I don’t think we can write him off. He was harrying and tackling all over we just lacked the conviction to make a difference because it was the first time the 4-3-3 was used.

Consistency is important and we still have the fullbacks yet to get into the team. I reckon if a more intelligent player had the chances Sead had; we would have scored more goals.

  105. Bob N16

Torreira is quality but is being messed around by Emery’s tinkering. Don’t understand why he’s attracting criticism on here. Some people being sizest maybe. Xhaka deserves all he gets though!

  106. Lari03

Without Lacazette we would have lost this game, so we need to be accept this. Aubameyang will only thrive when we have a stronger team able to play a 4-5-1 and we are just making it up as we go, with every game.

When the front 3 are synced perfectly then we will score loads of goals.
