Ok, I wanted to post today, but I ended up rocking a work drinks, then the peel off work drinks, then I went toe-to-toe with my team after that and I lost.

For the nightcap, I went to what I thought was a normal club. How wrong could I be? I witnessed someone in drag whip her chopper out for the crowd, then pick up a champagne bottle with another part of their body, before ripping the cork off and spraying the fans.

I also lost my bag. My ID. Two money cards.

Where did I lose them? That club. Always the way. Now I have to go back their sober at 11 pm. This is my punishment.

Thankfully, we weren’t really punished in the Europa League.

Group F #Arsenal, Eintracht Frankfurt, Standard Liege, Vitoria SC

The German’s will likely cause us the most problems. They have a bit of a following. Niko Kovac managed them before Adi Hütter took the reins. They’ll not be the same threat as they were with Luka Jović, but they’ll be well organised and they’ll come with enough tactical weaponry to take advantage of us if we take a complacent view of their talents.

Unai Emery has a huge opportunity to rectify the widely panned defeat from last weekend. We’ll see how much belief he has in his ‘play-out-of-the-back’ philosophy. So far, it’s looked distinctly shite, Burnley, Newcastle and Liverpool have seen the execution as an opportunity versus a threat. We saw a pretty similar thing last year before it was binned. We need to see a progression of the idea, because from where I’m sitting, it doesn’t look like it’s a practice issue… it looks like we do the same thing over and over so it’s predictable and easy to counter.

Spurs is a huge game. Fuck their form. It always means very little. The game will be thunderous and there will be a few players out there experiencing it for the first time.

We should be going toe-to-toe with them. We should be taking advantage of the possibility of their right being Sissoko. We should be hitting them out the blocks and leaning hard into the unsettled nature of their squad.

I think this is a huge game for Pepe and Ceballos. Both players have the ability to make a hero statement. Both are new to Spurs.

I also think it’s a big question of Unai Emery. Is he going to throw Xhaka back into the mix again know that Spurs will target his lack of ability under heavy pressure?

It’s also Nacho’s last game for Arsenal… wouldn’t it be something if he were the one with the winner?

Right, short post today, I’ll be spending the evening deciphering whatever Unai Emery has to say.

See you in the comments.

Joke Friday –

A boy says to a girl, “So, sex at my place?”

“Yeah!”

“Okay, but I sleep in a bunk bed with my younger brother, and he thinks we’re making sandwiches, so we have to have a code. Cheese means faster and tomato means harder, okay?”

Later on the girl is yelling, “Cheese cheese, tomato tomato!”

The younger brother says, “Stop making sandwiches! You’re getting mayo all over my bed!”

“Stephen Hughes and Patrick Vieira both panted for arsenal at a similar age range at the same time period. But I guess they were both at the same eleven right?” Comparing Stephen Hughes vs Patrick Vieira is senseless. Monreal was a very solid left back for Arsenal, he always gave his all for the club and you were guaranteed at least a 7/10 from him every single time. On the other hand, while Koscienly gave his all for the club, we all know there was always a mistake waiting to happen in his game. We can reel out games were Koscienly… Read more »

Now this is funny. Can’t beat Dave Chappelle

Un na naai

Azed

Yes I can. To illustrate a point. That point being that having two players in the same side at the same time doesn’t always mean their quality is comparable.

Koscielney was indeed a higher level than monreal. Even if nacho was consistent. Koscielney would have captained France to the World Cup had he not injured himself against atletcio for us

No fucking wonder he wanted out. I’d have hated arsenal.

I actually think this is an understatement.

“Koscielney was indeed a higher level than monreal. ”

You have data to back this up?

Koscienly and Vermaleen —————- Terrible
Koscienly and Gabriel ———————-Terrible
Koscienly and Mustafi ———————- Terrible

Only Koscienly and Mertersacker was decent enough..

On the other hand, it didn’t matter who played in front of Monreal, he performed.

Un na naai

Luteo

No no no no no

Don’t you see? It was a key element in our wondrous ability to keep Liverpool down to 25 shots and just 5 on target

Had we gone longer we would surely have lost 8-2.

Luteo Guenreira

Un

I think his point is that the difference in quality between Hughes and Paddy is a chasm compared to the difference in quality between Monreal and Koscielny, which is middling to negligible depending on who you ask.

Un na naai

Azed

Do you have data to prove me wrong? I’d say being chosen as captain of the squad that won the World Cup would be quite the indicator that this guy performs to a very high level no?

Luteo Guenreira

Un

Lighten up. It’s a joke. You just condemned jwl for his joke while praising Chappelle in the next. If you see his new standup which you just linked to, you’ll see he jokes about Michael Jackson extensively, as he has done his entire career.. You’re a hypocrite to say that to jwl.

Luteo Guenreira

Not that I’m surprised that you make emotional decisions about what is right or wrong without considering the full set of data available to you. Don’t change, brother.

azed

“I’d say being chosen as captain of the squad that won the World Cup would be quite the indicator that this guy performs to a very high level no?”

Giroud played as the Striker that led France to the world cup, Lacazette can’t even make the team for a friendly does that make Giroud a better player or “playing at a higher” level than Lacazette?

China1

I don’t mind us playing out of the back. I mind is putting the CBs almost parallel with the keeper so that our entire defensive unit has to drop miles into our own half just to support a few simple passes out

I really don’t get why we have to always have so many players *that* deep. We’re arsenal. Playing a 10-15 yard pass to another defender or cm shouldn’t so hard that we need half our team to be sitting in and around our own penalty box just to keep the ball

It’s weird, pointless and annoying

Un na naai

Luteo

No. His point was that they played together at the same period so therefore there cannot be a gulf in quality.

Put it this way. Koscielny in his prime would have played for almost any team in the world.

Bayern, Dortmund and Real Madrid were all in for him in his prime

China1

It also means if the defenders make one bad pass the opposition will steal the ball around our own fucking box

At least if you defend like a normal team and you make a mistake the opposition still need to bring it forwards a bit before the get a nailed on goal scoring chance

At arsenal we’re always 2 seconds away from gifting a nailed on chance and it’s fucking irritating

Kos was a more talented player than Monreal but also more error prone

Kos was usually a 7.5. Sometimes a 9, sometimes a 5.

Monreal was a nailed on 7 100 games in a row.

Which one is better depends on how you interpret the value of the above

azed

China1

“I mind is putting the CBs almost parallel with the keeper so that our entire defensive unit has to drop miles into our own half just to support a few simple passes out”

The rules have changed. Before in a goal kick, the ball from the keeper had to come out of the 18 before anyone else touched it, now it doesn’t matter which means the opposition can move up higher up the pitch .

Chris

Unfortunately I have as many bad memories as good memories of Koscielny. For every winner at Newcastle there is him kicking the ball into his own face to allow Griezmann in. For every resolute performance where he put his body on the line there is losing us a cup final in horrendous fashion.

Ultimately the way he conducted himself in his final few weeks the the club and the subsequent shirt unveil at Bordeaux leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

I will remember Monreal more fondly.

Un na naai

China

Not my style
I leave that to the stats nerds. I am a fan of both but koscielney saved our bacon more than any defender we’ve had since Campbell toure and Cole.

Kos was part of the problem. No winning mentality. Yes, he had good games but part of the furniture (captain indeed) during the banter years. Says it all. An enabler for Wenger.

Sissoko is not a real problem for Spurs.

Where Spurs fans slag him off is his input in the final third.

Other than that he can make very dangerous driving runs from midfield and his physicality in winning the centre of the pitch is always a threat to the opposition.

Spurs have several other problems before Sissoko is seen as one for them.

azed

“Ok smart arse. It must have been my imagination when I’ve seen pool city and Barca play out countless times before this rule with no problem. What stopped the opposition thwarting this previously? Magic spells and chanting?”

Seriously Un?

You do realize players have different abilities on the ball right?

If you passed the ball to Xhaka and Fernadinho under pressure, do you really think the result would be the same?

Do you think Leno and Ederson have the same ability on the ball?

China1

Azed it doesn’t work like that in reality Good teams have managed to pass between the keeper and defense since forever without it being so difficult. You only need a keeper with an accurate pass on him and defenders comfortable on the ball. It’s not remotely unusual As well it’s normal for one player to drop a bit deeper to support the keeper but we often have two defenders dropping almost parallel with the keeper simultaneously which is a hideously pointless tactic Because you now have two of your back 4 so far away from the midfield that the remaining… Read more »

Emery is supposed to study video a lot. We have two CBs, 2 FBs ans 2CMs to practice playing out from the back. The CAM should also offer an option. The coaching stuff should have it all mapped out where each player should locate with regard to the opposing players and how they should pass the ball around. They should practice it everyday.

Carts

All week peeps telling me Arsenal will dish out a beating to skids

A war of attrition: can out superior front line best their defence

China1

As for it all your defenders being marked by strikers so you can’t pass it short to them farther away from your goal – it’s called movement from the defender.

Lastly, let’s say the opposition play a 4-3-3 which is the most offensive commonly used formation. AND they have all 3 players aggressively pressing/marking

We have 4 defenders. If you can find an unmarked defender when there are more defenders than attackers than your defense have horrible positioning and movement (we probably do)

Un na naai

Luteo

You’re making a fool of yourself

1) you don’t need to be a victim to find it abhorrent. Crazy I know. Maybe you were raised by parents who thought it funny to laugh at child rape. Who knows.

2) go back and find me the comment where I showed my displeasure with jwl. Find the joke and the quote and bring it to me.
I’ll give you £10k if you can.

You won’t. Because it doesn’t exist

Nelson

It did give us meaningful benefits because we keep control of the ball. A long ball from the GK is 50/50.

Chris

Sours have an issue at right back on Sunday. They are missing Walker-Peters and Foyth. Pochettino has been speaking of playing Ben Davies there.

I would hope we focus our attacks on that side and target a player playing out of position. Another possibility which is slightly outlandish is playing Sissoko at right back. Either way, we should be looking at that area of the pitch to exploit.

There was a new video that popped up on my Amazon Prime video list the other day, it was all the goals from every match of the 2006 World Cup condensed into 2 hours. Highly entertaining, almost like rewatching the entire tournament in a couple hours. Recommend it for anyone looking for something to keep playing in the background, although I found myself watching pretty intently most of the time.

Chris

I love how this site auto corrects Spurs as “sours”. So appropriate!

Either that or I keep hitting o instead of p on my phone. Going to stick with just calling them Sours I think!

China1

But you don’t need to play that deep to play it out from the back

I don’t mind is playing it out from the back and keeping the ball. I mind us playing football with less than amazing players in our own box when it isn’t needed to do it that deep for all the reasons above I already gave

It’s not a choice between doing it horribly the Arsenal way or hoofing long balls

Un na naai

You do realize players have different abilities on the ball right? If you passed the ball to Xhaka and Fernadinho under pressure, do you really think the result would be the same?

Azed

You’ve just validated my point
So why play out from the back at all then let alone across our own 6 yard box? 🙄

Chris

Luteo

I love stuff like that. I still have all the goals of France 98 on VHS somewhere, with introduction by Blatter. It might even be on YouTube by now.

They squished all those goals into 45 mins I think!

Un na naai

I don’t mind is playing it out from the back and keeping the ball. I mind us playing football with less than amazing players in our own box when it isn’t needed to do it that deep for all the reasons above I already gave

China
Spot on. Exactly

Ishola70

Brain dead Fofana

China1

Most of Arsenal’s playing it out from the back consists of endless passes to and fro between fb and cb anyway

We’re not opening great spaces with clever movement and passing or suckering them in and delivering a genius transition

We are inviting danger by playing deep but we have neither the ability nor the smarts to make it actually useful

Un na naai

Luteo must have finally realised he was barking up the wrong tree like a castrated chihuahua

Luteo Guenreira

I would try to attack the right side with overlapping Pepe and AMN. We can still play out from the back. The final ball will go to AMN or Pepa. A CM would move over to backup AMN. From the right side, we then center the ball to our two deadly strikers. BOOMS!

China1

The only player we have who looks like he can regularly take the ball very deep and use it to break through the lines and punish the opposition for pressing us is Ceballos. There’s not one other player in our defensive collective who will get on the ball near his own box and have some clever idea for how to turn this situation into something advantageous. And he’s a n10 so usually isn’t as deep as that When any other of our players is on the ball in those positions it’s just stressful and I don’t know why we choose… Read more »

Times like now I’d kill for a young cesc sitting a bit deeper than usual to receive the ball 1) cesc was permanently showing for the ball which makes the players around him calmer knowing he won’t fuck up 2) cesc was unpressable because he’d drop a shoulder and turn his man on his ass if they marked him too closely, opening up big spaces for dangerous counters 3) if they didn’t press him he would have free reign on the ball to carry it a bit forward and pick a brilliant pass If you’re gonna play that deep you… Read more »

Personally, I think half the trouble is we are not what I would call a passing side under Emery .

Teams like Norwich and Leicester are more comfortable passing from the back because they are encouraged to take care of the ball in any area of the pitch by their managers.

Leicester and Norwich do not have superior technical players to Arsenal that’s for sure.

What I find strange is , the one area of the pitch that Emery seems to encourage his players to pass the ball is in their own area.

Luteo Guenreira

A subtle nuance like that to you means I’ve stated only victims can find something abhorrent? I don’t know how you came to that conclusion.
