NLD has extra spice this week

Great result in the Ashes.

Incredible result in Spurs home game against the unstoppable machine that is Steve Bruce’s Newcastle.

The mighty Geordies stole the game 0-1 after a lovely finish from Joelinton, a striker not really known for goals.

Poch hasn’t won an away game since Jan, he’s only won 4 games in his last 15, and he is looking extremely arsey in his prezzers.

You could almost feel for him. Emery is out here praying that we sell Mustafi and Elneny, Poch might yet lose Jan Vertonghen, Toby Aldeweirald and Christian Eriksen.

If those three go, they are in desperate trouble this season. It’s like Spurs are finally paying the price for a criminally low wage bill. Those three leave and it’ll be a huge blow for morale, technical capability, experience levels and their chances of top 4.

Add to that the rumour that Spurs were 10k short for the Newcastle game and they had to literally give tickets away to pump their numbers (unverified).

Hate to see it, honestly.

In Arsenal news, poor old Unai is taking a hammering from all corners after his tactical disaster-class against Liverpool. Not really my bag to talk tactics, but I kind of feel he was fucked whichever route he took.

Why would he start Lacazette… who has a horrendous record away from home? Why would there be a consideration for Mesut Ozil? The guy is an absolute wimp. What was he supposed to do about the full-back situation?

My main critique would be how tepid we were. We’re not fierce in these games. Emery isn’t decisive when things go wrong. He’s also very uncreative when it comes to fixing problems as they happen.

I think he’s scared. He knows that this year he has to improve. He knows there are a whole bunch of underlying statistics he’s going to have to attack. I’d imagine that is going to impact his starting 11s this season.

Remember, he’s used to getting by with experienced journeymen. That’s why you’re more likely to see Xhaka start than someone younger. Kids make mistakes. It’s too risky. Even his big kids make mistakes. David Luiz has made 3 massive errors in 2 games. Not good enough.

… but it’s interesting, big mistakes seem to be a theme whoever plays.

How do you coach concentration into players? How do you make the team stronger defensively? How do you improve the attacking output?

There’s a lot to work on, but it’s hard to judge him after losing to one of the most brutal outfits in the game.

Let’s see what happens against Spurs.

Newcastle are a shower of shit, but they managed to roll the European cup finalists. Emery isn’t going to be able to hide behind excuses forever. We have a very, very good squad of players to pick from. If teams are better than us, surely the purpose of a coach is that he finds a way?

If Emery takes Spurs down by 3 goals this weekend, everyone will rejoice that he has more sauce than the Costco condiments aisle. I won’t, but you know, I see what’s coming with absolute clarity.

Might have a little bit of goss for you tomorrow, tune in or be damned to an eternity of fire and Sam Allardyce.

I can’t beilive we don’t have young players who are specific full back we can’t play.

May be a player in there but not at right back.

Pierre We want Emery to define a playing style for us a philosophy a gameplan called Emeryball. He wants us to be protagonists on the ball and playing out from the back is essential to being protagonists. You cany be protagonists if you just punt the ball up the field. And well playing out is still better for us than punting the ball upfield because we dont have someone like to Giroud to collect those aerial balls. Honestly whatever front 4 we garner we cant win aerial duels. Only Pepe seems to be someone who can head a ball and… Read more »

We have learnt more about Emery from the Pool game. He is not afraid to try new things. Against the Pools, I am all for defense and fast counter. But we can do that also with our familiar 4 3 3 formation. In fact, we defend with 10 men when we lose the ball. I like Reiss Nelson’s track back to cover the opposing FB.

Anyway, the Pool game is a good time to try new things. Let’s get back to what we know best and prepare for the SPUDS game.

“ Unai, like Arsene is handicapped by fear. It’s so unattractive. Losing 3-1 meekly or losing 6-4 in game of the season where we chucked it all at Liverpool…I’ll take the latter. Losing is still zero points. “

To add to Guns o Hackney Emery football is like plain sliced bread dipped in hot water.

Wasi If Emerys game plan was to play out from the back then I would have thought that as a priority he or the club should have bought 1) 2 central defenders who are comfortable on the ball ( Luiz was a last minute desperate signing who happens to fit that mould). 2) a midfielder who can receive the ball under pressure from the keeper or defender. 3) a goalkeeper who can effortlessly switch play which you say Leno cant do. 4) 2 full backs who are comfortable receiving the ball under pressure…Tierney may solve the left back problem but… Read more »

Pierre Sven’s and Rual’s transfer windows were all about filling the gaping holes of the squad. Before Sok we had Mustafi as a starter . Torreira was a much needed addition. Guendouzi can definitely play out from the back. Lich was a failure but everybody makes mistakes. Now this season also was more about filling the big gaps . And Tierney ,pepe ceballos, luiz can all play out from the back. The playing out from the back like everything else is going to be a work in progress. I think people who claim Wenger don’t do tactics aren’t very tactical themselves.

When it comes to Wenger, there is his truth, our (fans) truth and the real truth.

Early signs on Emery is pretty mixed for me.

Alex Cutter

Just FYI. Yesterday the least clever poster here (HL) was soliciting bets that Pepe would score his first goal against spurs this weekend.

He turned down one bet for $100 (excuse: he’s too poor)
He turned down a second bet of $200 vs. him not typing “lol” for a year.

Let’s try to prove that HL isn’t a blowhard or welsher, and come up with a bet he can afford to accept.

Liverpool give you the feeling that they are writing history at the moment and everyone else is just co-starring in their film. I have no doubt they will win the league this year and maybe champions league too.

Why the hell didn’t we get klopp when we had the chance ? I like Emery somewhat but Klopp is THE Alpha.

You reckon we would get not one, not two but three spurs players and one of them probably pushing £100m?

Mate, stop taking whatever it is you’re taking and do what the rest of us do. Drink.

Cesc Appeal

Monreal looking likely to leave.

I get it, but puts pressure on our back line until Tierney is fit and then puts massive pressure on him.

Anything close to £5 Million for Monreal is good money for a player of his age. Seems likely that Mustafi and Elneny will also leave.

I have confidence that the club has something lined up for January. We’ve managed to recoup quite a bit of money.

Could be if things are going well the club is more adventurous in January sort of betting on us having UCL money by next season.

Guns of Hackney

Here we go. Monreal is the best left back in the history of left backs in the game of left backs.

Not in Arsenal’s top three.

Cole
Winter burn
Silvinho

“Only two of them are defenders and one of them have gone already ”

Exactly….and the Emery philosophy is to play out from the back .

It’s no good having the best attacking line up in Europe (possibly) if we are going to be dispossessed on the edge of our own area because we are fixated with playing out from the back with players who are supposedly not up to the job.

Guns of Hackney

Pierre and Bob showing their age.

Sansom was brilliant but workmanlike. McNab was a brute.

My top three had flair. And no matter what you thought of cashley, he was in the top two of world left backs at the time. He was brilliant. And we let him go for £5000.

That sums up Arsenal.

Receding Hairline

“if we are going to be dispossessed on the edge of our own area because we are fixated with playing out from the back with players who are supposedly not up to the job.”

When all your outfield players are rubbish in the air you don’t really have the option of going long, i will advise Leno plays the ball into midfield, let them learn how to receive a pass under pressure< The passing to Luiz, then Sokratis, then AMN bit is not advancing play, it's doing nothing positive at all.

Cesc Appeal

Dissenter

I agree.

I think if you look at the squad at the start of next season it will be near unrecognizable to the sorry state Wenger left it in.

I expect some interesting buys from South America as well with Edu on board.

With Sanllehi and Edu I really think we have a great thing, very competent people backing them up in Venkatesham, Fahmy, Cagigao and Knapper as well.

Bob N16

Sansom ‘workmanlike’ – you’re showing your ignorance!

Dissenter

Some of the angst about the Saturday loss was predictable though.
When people were zeroing in on Xhaka pre-game [like they always do], some of us were saying that the two 19 year-olds in the midfielder may struggle.
…and they did.

Emery may not be the guy to take us to the promised land but I’m glad that he had the courage to play Guen and Willocks in a game of that magnitude.

Guns of Hackney

Sansom was a workman. Period. I’ve never heard him mentioned as an artist or performer. Not in 35 years of supporting Arsenal…and I watched him play!

I work with stats and that kind of graph is exactly what I hate with intellectual snob.
Graph and colour for the sake of saying look at me I am clever when the graph just shows the exact opposite.
Graph and chart should just be simple with few colours.
Also movement and flow across time cannot be accurately and simply by a static graph. You need to add a time as changing element to the graph.

I would say that bar the fullback, this is pretty likely to be Emery favourite lineup in big game.

As most of the turnover did not come from the fullback, even taking into account that we were setup to just counter-attack, I would say that this is worrying stats.

Sure, Pepe and Ceballos have been with the club a month so throwing them in off the deep end against Liverpool away was always a big ask.
Fabinho, who’s been one of the best performers for Pool this season didn’t start a league game for them until middle of October after his transfer from Bundesliga last year. And Bundesliga is much closer pace wise to PL than French or Spanish league.

On the assumption that Monreal is leaving, the problem of how to fill the left back position becomes crucial. With Bellerin also out, the options are limited. Emery clearly does not trust Kola in a flat back four. The obvious option is to switch AMN further out of position to left back and install Chambers as right back. Alternatively, switch to three at the back and play AMN and Kola as wing backs until Bellerin and Tiernery are fully up to speed. Late October, early November ?
