NEW SEASON IS HERE!

by .

Day one of the season is about to start. This year it’s exciting. The major worry on my mind is that despite having a very good window, we had a very late one. The majority of our BIG signings aren’t match fit and all of them will need more time to integrate.

Additionally, it’s going to be a bumpy few months as the team gels and a new style emerges*

(*prays there’s a new style emerging).

Unfortunately, we don’t really have time on our hands. We have a beastly opening 6 weeks, Liverpool and Spurs are the two really tough games, but we also have to deal with Burnley and Watford away. There’s a huge Manchester United game at the end of September, that one really will be a tone-setter for the top 4 race this season.

Tierney is going to reintegrate into training in 4-6 weeks, so our left side is going to be a bit of an issue. Hopefully, David Luiz can start a little sooner having had a full preseason with Chelsea.

Looking at the squad, the only new player we’re likely to see start tomorrow is Dani Ceballos, and even then I’m not totally sure of it. If we’re rolling with the same players from last season, there’s a risk it could be a bit of a grim start as others work on their fitness.

What I am FASCINATED about is which young kids are the chosen ones. You could argue that Iwobi was a useful player that we didn’t really plan to lose, so, therefore, don’t have a backup for. We are certainly looking light for experienced players upfront.

So who takes his back-up role? Will we see ESR this season? Will Saka land some minutes? There must be an anointed successor because Pepe can’t play all the games.

I also really hope that Willock is a regular fixture this season. He looks ready, he had a great preseason, and I think his mobility and attacking threat could be very useful.

It’s also a big year for Mesut Ozil. He has a great squad of players to work with now and he appears to have put his EMERY OUT banner back in his Fortnite rucksack (did you see the kid that won the world cup of Fortnite earned $3m?). We know he can be the best in the business when he wants it. What will we see in November? Fannying out of challenges? Or racking up assists to feed his militant army of believers?

The exciting thing about this squad is we have an entirely new dynamic built around pace and an attacking threat… even our new centre back drops big game chances. It’s a tantalising thought that a defender like that will reduce our reliance on Xhaka.

A lingering problem that Emery is refusing to address is the captains’ armband. The group captaincy approach really is an odd way to think about leadership, especially after it worked so badly against us in the last campaign. The current group sits at three, Emery assuring us he’s going to wait and see who exits the building in the next 20 odd days before he decides.

“At the moment we have three captains: Xhaka, Mesut and Nacho, and I want to take two more because my opinion is the same as it was in the pre-season with five.

“I want to be with my squad clearly to have two more. At the moment we have three captains and I think they have the capacity to give us possibilities as captain.”

Even the most ardent Emery fan must be scratching their head at that list. You have one of the most error-prone players in the team on the list, someone who can’t go to big away games, and a left-back that is a true warrior, but also getting on a bit and quite injury prone.

David Luiz looking like the most standout figure when it comes to the armband, even if he is green to the club. #5 should probably be Hector Bellerin. He’s everything you want from a leader and I think there would likely be universal approval for a move like that.

Broader point… a leadership shared is a leadership that is NOT respected. Hierarchies in sport and business are important, this hippy commune approach to a badly damaged institution at Arsenal seems more about not making a decision than anything else.

At the time of writing this, the season has started and it appears Liverpool and City will be good this season. Some great goals in both games, the real concern early on is the way the Premier League is implementing VAR.

‘YOU WANTED ACCURATE FUCK WE’LL GIVE YOU ACCURATE’ is maybe a touch too extreme when it comes to the enforcement of the rules.

In the City game, every goal was checked, the keepers footwork on the penalty and the fouls inside the box. All the decisions were correct, but the time lag was inappropriate. Calling an offside for millimeters felt petty, but again, correct.

A few thoughts on this.

If we’re going to get militant about decisions, we have to bring the fans along. That waiting screen is the equivalent of internet buffering when you’re trying to watch your AV videos on Youtube… just show me the fucking Dreamliner stupid internet. Show the fans what the refs are looking at, give a little transparency, otherwise the in-ground experience is going to drive people away.

I also think cross-checking every single goal is a bit extreme. I don’t know how you get around that. There’s no middle ground when it comes to fact. I wonder if they work a Hawkeye sort of system where managers get two calls a game? I also wonder why they’re still allowing humans to manage the process. Shouldn’t IBM have Watson looking at these decisions? Why do we need a layer of officiating over the game? If we’re going black and white, let AI work it out.

I will say that the penalty save from Fabianski was rightly called back. For me, it’s baffling that refs and linesmen almost NEVER call the encroachment out of the box. But again, why did we need to wait so long to call it, the player left the line, you don’t even need a video ref to call that out.

All in all, we need VAR. Too many big decisions have been incorrect over the years. They just need to be flexible in ironing out the kinks. They also need to address them rapidly, let’s not wait a year to deal with the elephant in the room. If it’s laborious or boring to get to ‘right’, then the argument will be that maybe we should just accept injustice.

I truly believe they will find a middle ground. Well, I hope they do, otherwise the game is in trouble.

Right, I’m off to watch the MIGHTY VILLA spank Spurs this afternoon.

See you in the comments x

Why can’t Leno just kick the ball out?
Does he have a hip injury?

Paulinho

Willocks tries hard but he is very basic.

Valentin

I would have replaced Mkhitaryan before Willock!

karim

Hollywood pass from our number 8 lol

Leftsidesanch

What the fuck is that on Saints head?!?

Gazzap

AMN not being given much assistance. Two of their players always near him. Miki should be helping out

Un na naai

Fsaf

Yes good finish
Never said he wasn’t a good finisher
Says he offers nothing if there’s nothing on. He’s too static for someone so fast

Paulinho

Need to take off Nelson. He will get 2nd yellow.

fsaf

First touch by Dani boy almost assisted the Newcastle. Fk me..

Leftsidesanch

Already causing us issues plant tree head

TR7

Almiron, Maximine.and Joelington – our defense will.have to be on its toes.

fsaf

Another horrid pass by Dani boy. He’ll defo need more time to settle.

Dissenter

Ceballos not up top speed with the game. He’s made two errors already.

fsaf

GIVE RED CARD YOU FKIN DOUCHE

Nelson

I would take out Micki and bring in another defender

Gazzap

Get Pepe on 100%

fsaf

Not even yellow??!?!?!?! ARE YOU FKIN KIDDING ME?!?!?!

Thomas

Nelson and Willock won’t make it.

karim

Allez !

Paddy Gooner

And here he comes….

Un na naai

Shit from ceballos there
Lucky to get away with that

Nelson

Pepe for Reiss

fsaf

Yo this ref wtf is he on about? 3-4 yellows not given but gave our players without blinking an eye. wtf

Ishola70

should have been a booking for maxim

Gazzap

fuck off Miki stays on. how do Xhaka and Miki play 90 mins all the time? fucks me off. they’re shit.

Valentin

Not impressed by Ceballos so far.

Pepe on for Nelson.
Mkhitaryan is still on the pitch!
Baffling.

Un na naai

Thomas

I can’t wait for you Chavs to get buried later you mug. You and your fat manager

Dream10

How the hell are Newcastle escaping these yellow cards?!? Referees letting teams get away with fouls against for the 85th consecutive season.

Un na naai

Not impressed by Ceballos so far.Pepe on for Nelson.
Mkhitaryan is still on the pitch!
Baffling.

Val
Astute comment as usual

Leftsidesanch

Thomas won’t be commenting on Chelsea blogs when his team plays because he spends all his time here. Voyeur.

fsaf

First thing Pepe does is try a 1v1, Reiss 73 mins been passing to the closest guy. Need more sharpness you are playing a winger mate…

Un na naai

Super Nic???
Fucking bland chant. We’ve always had embarrassing chants

InsideRight

FFS Xhaka.

How many times in his career has shouting at a linesman made them change their mind about who to award the throw in to? Why doesn’t he just get into position and get on with it?

Leftsidesanch

You may see Mikki come off for Laca with Auba going wide.

fsaf

The foul by Maximin vs Xhaka was also extremely dangerous. Extremely. 50% he seriously injures him. Why is var not telling the wanker ref that it’s a red card?!

TR7

Mikhi is always involved in our play but I don’t know whether it’s his casualness or lack of concentration that he always fluffs his chances or misplaces his passes. Not really sure what’s going on with him. He hasn’t been bad though.

Paulinho

Everyone is hiding. Not good.

Champagne charlie

Ceballos is off the pace here big time, get your feet wet lad you’re on borrowed time.

Pepe not had a touch

Dissenter

Really underwhelming performance, regardless of the result.
Something tells me it’s not just because it’s the first game.

Paulinho

In these situations the forward pass is the safe option, not the backwards one.

fsaf

Another yellow for our team ofc. It is a yellow card, agreed. But what about the times they deserved it?! Fkin wanker.

vickingz

Xhaka ooooooo

S Asoa

Xakha card game is on. First yellow

Leftsidesanch

Ref is a joke

Dissenter

You can see why he’s left Mykhi on though. He’s been everywhere

Ishola70

xhaka having one of his better games but silly foul there

Carts

Auba to score anytime. Thank you Bet365…easiest £50

Champagne charlie

Pepe looking to play on the shoulder, like that.

We need to sharpen up big time with Liverpool and co looming. We’ll get spanked with this level of performance.

Gonsterous

Jesus please get mhiki out, he looks 35 out there on the field.

fsaf

Ceballos has that quality that he’ll hold on the ball for as much as he wants to. Like say Nasri and David Silva.

Leftsidesanch

At this stage it is all about the result.

Paddy Gooner

We need to get control here. Newcastle not great but could still nick one

Rambo Ramsey

Golden boy Pep hasn’t done shit

Gonsterous

Hope martinelli gets an appearance, though it wouldn’t be fair on Laca.

Dissenter

Chambers has been good. An away game in the rain at Newcastle is no joke.

Valentin

At last.

karim

We’re asking for trouble, we’re so naive sometimes

Leftsidesanch

Lets see how Martinelli fares

InsideRight

Jesus heard you.

Paulinho

“Ceballos has that quality that he’ll hold on the ball for as much as he wants to. Like say Nasri and David Silva.”

Notice he can slow the game down and players just back off him.

Gonsterous

Rambo Ramsey

Calm down, I’m sure you were criticizing the purchase of bergkamp when he didn’t light the game on fire on his debut.

fsaf

Saint-Maximin puts to shame Iwobi. Younger and twice as cheap.

Paddy Gooner

Didnt think we’d see Martinelli so soon. Must have impressed

Un na naai

Much better from Mkhitaryan in the second half
Why can’t he be like that all the time?
Ceballos looks weak

Gazzap

Like the look of Martinelli.

Zimmie2652

To be fair Rambo, he hasn’t seen much of the ball.

TheBayingMob

“An away game in the rain at Newcastle is no joke”

You’re right.

It’s the Newcastle fans who’re the fucking joke.

Valentin

Guendouzi has had a good game.
Nothing too flashy.
No risk taken when in possession.

Un na naai

Chambers has been good. An away game in the rain at Newcastle is no joke.

Dissenter
He’s better than people think I’m telling ya

While defence has done well

Clean sheet away!! Not to be sniffed at
Just the usual dull lifeless football going forward under emery.

Un na naai

Whole defence

Well played AMN

Champagne charlie

Martinelli has a good mentality about him, Nelson smacks of someone that’s timid. Martinelli wants the ball and wants to get involved. Could bode well

Thomas

Mkhitaryan and Xhaka worst players on the pitch.

TR7

AMN and Chambers have played well today

Gonsterous

Don’t understand our goal.kick though lmao.
Just lump it up to who ever is strongest in the air.
Wenger used to use sagna for that, when giroud.was not available.

Wenker-wanger

We just need the 1-0 result……if so a big improvement in away games…..

karim

10 yards won on the free kick and the 4th ref says it’s fair

fsaf

Yeah, Nelson looks okay with being isolated. Martinelli kid is well up for it. If he has talent in addition he’ll be a valuable asset.

Leftsidesanch

AMN has grown into the game and done fairly well this second half up to this point.

Paulinho

Auba just awful at holding up the ball.

DaleDaGooner

Guendouzi really adds nothing to our defensive play, he just runs around doing nothing

Un na naai

Played ainsley

Paddy Gooner

4 mins of shite coming up

Nelson

Our players are so soft defensively. Guen can’t defend.

Paulinho

Soo many slow midfielders out there.

Scary stuff.

Nelson

At least Xhaka knows how to eat the clock.

Un na naai

Martinelli has a good mentality about him, Nelson smacks of someone that’s timid. Martinelli wants the ball and wants to get involved. Could bode well

Cc
Yeah I thought that.
Think he’s a confidence player though. He’s still only just turned 19

Paddy Gooner

Midfield bypassed again and again

Gazzap

Newcastle are competitive though at the back and middle. not a bad team by the looks of it. everyone writing them off before the season.

Paddy Gooner

Thank god!

Un na naai

Well done xakha

Is it me or does he look a yard quicker and leaner too?

TheBayingMob

Yar I’m not overawed with guen-dozy. Headless chicken stuff

Un na naai

Shit from ceballos again

karim

I thought Newcastle were poor despite all their good will.

Paddy Gooner

I thought Xhaka looks fitter. Still shite though

Dissenter

Good start to the season

Marko

You’ll take that

Valentin

A win is a win, but not really impressive victory.

Paulinho

Get the fuck in,

Take 1-0 at St James Park all day long.

Paddy Gooner

1-0 to the Arsenal

Nelson

Time is up…

1 9 10 11 12 13 17
