King Raul takes the summer from a 3/10 to an 8/10

by .

Lie back, take out an extra light cigarette attached to one of those extender things, spark up, and ask yourself how good that ride was.

Newsnow, we’ve never gone harder and we’ve never both finished a window satisfied.

Arsenal, I was thinking about you the whole time.

Ok, I am DONE with the sexy talk.

Arsenal capped off a mental window with a mad trolley dash for David Luiz (hopefully) and Kieran Tierney.

Tierney gives us outrageous pace and delivery on the left. He can defend. He has played in an invincible side. He is the full package. Celtic fans are devastated because he matters and they know he’s worth more than we paid for him.

I loved this from the .com.

I was actually down the park with my friends training. They play with their local team so I was down watching them and I got a phone call that I needed to go. I got to the airport and the flight was delayed two-and-a-half hours, with another hour’s drive for a hotel and I probably got zero sleep, so I was back up at half five today.

David Luiz is a real fence sitter.

Is he better than what we have? Absolutely.

Does his ability to play out of the back change the dynamic of our play and reduce the onus on Xhaka? Absolutely.

Has he won trophies everywhere? Yes.

Can he score against us and torment us this season? No.

He’s an up and down player. He has errors in him. But he can do more of the things Emery needs of him than Mustafi.

He’s also a bit of a c*nt.

What I’m saying is this… don’t turn your nose up at someone that isn’t Mustafi. I’d hire you mum if the chance arose. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that one of these last-ditch ‘character’ signings from Chelsea (or anywhere) finally pays off at some point.

Remember, we just need to get through this season… next  year we can go big for someone younger and hopefully Saliba will come back into the fold.

There are also very strong rumours that Iwobi is going to exit the club to Everton for £40m.

Rave-wobi has many positive attributes, but at this level and at his age, you need to be contributing more than sometimes solid dribbling and moving the ball between the lines. He doesn’t give many assists, he doesn’t score many goals, and his ability to strike the ball cleanly seems to a disappeared. He’s just not good enough for where we need to be.

I know the African Grovers will be furious, but it’s true.

A solid pro, and he’ll leave our most expensive ever sale at £40m.

Unreal biz from Raul.

I’ll be back with another blog a little later when everything is fully confirmed.

… but overall, as Matt pointed out earlier, Raul has moved the club further in 2 weeks than Ivan G did in 10 years.

What a great summer. x

Ox was not better, he was very frustrating…other than a few shots, and his kick and run…..wasn’t better in my opinion.

Cesc Appeal

‘That a lot of you just don’t like the boy?’

You clearly like him and you’re making it personal.

It’s not personal, it’s great business.

I stuck up for Iwobi a lot last season, I think he’s a fair enough squad player, but if you’re offered £15-20 Million over someone’s value you take it when they contribute a minimal amount to your side.

Does selling him mean I think Mkhitaryan and Mustafi are worth more to us than Iwobi, no, it just means Everton made a really stupid offer.

WengerEagle

United have spent close to 900 million since Fergie retired six years ago and they’re going into a PL season with Rashford and Greenwood as their CF options, LOL.

Thank Christ for the footballing savant that is Ed Woodward.

Cesc Appeal

WE

United’s activities are baffling.

Making Ole the manager as well.

I mean, great obviously, but struggle to understand what their plan is.

DaleDaGooner

Oh believe me, I wanted more for him, it’s not personal, it is however personal for a lot of others, i glad we got 35m for him, but that’s the fair market price…peole going on as if we stole money from Everton, considering the silly money being thrown around for players like Tyrone Mings etc……perspective, he’s gone and we got fair market price, Zaha was going for 100m…..

Good ebening

United have been a shambles since bacon face hit retire. Absolutely rudderless. It’s hilarious.

Our squad has had a nice touch up this summer, what do you reckon?

Think the old ‘worst squad in the top 6’ tag can get parked. We’re in the mix for top 3/4 no question about it imo.

Cesc Appeal

You’d have kept Iwobi then and turned down the £35 Million, I don’t see what your point is here?

You just like Iwobi and you’re unhappy others thought he was mediocre/poor and that we’ve got a great deal?

I think most of the football world reacted with shock at that deal. A couple of my Spurs supporting family members are furious we got that money for him which tells you we got a great deal.

DaleDaGooner

Anyway, he’s gone, let’s move on with Mhki , Ozil, Xhaka (I still can’t believe no one is advocating for him to be sold)…these 3 are going to get a lot of game time.

WengerEagle

CA Yeah at least with City they spend their money incredibly well for the most part, same with Liverpool to a lesser extent. City have virtually two top drawer options for every position in the XI which is what you should be looking at spending close to a billion pounds, Liverpool don’t have quite as much depth but their starting XI is just as good or even arguably better and they’ve spent closer to 500m than 1 billion so that’s to be expected. Whereas United have spent Citeh money and have no 20 goal striker, McTominay as a CM, Young… Read more »

WE I think the average fan could have done better with the money they’ve spent. Really is incredible. They got the manager choice wrong and the restructure after Ferguson wrong where in comparison we got ours right. United fans must be looking at how Arsenal have moved on from Wenger and be in disbelief that their bigger club with far bigger resources fucked it up. Of course Ferguson was a much better manager but similar issues arise. City do kind of annoy me though, it’s just to the point of ridiculousness now with their squad and I like how everyone… Read more »

I have to held my hand, I did not expect Raul to be able to complete the last few deals on time. As I said before 5 millions for Koscielny and 8 for Luiz are fair deal. Luiz will have his share of WTF moments, but those are possible rather than guaranteed as with Mustafi. The extra positive is that his distribution especially his long ball passing is majestic and could be a great tool for our wingers. 40 millions for Iwobi is really a “Everton, what were you thinking” moment. I’ll take it now, but it is a shame… Read more »

I was surprised that Dominic Thompson was allowed to go because I thought he did very well on the preseason tour and you could tell Emery liked him… I thought he had a good chance in becoming the LB understudy. With Tierney in place as the number 1 LB who now is kept on as the back up? Kolasinac? Or Monreal until Tierney is fit? Based on age alone, for me, if we could get around £5m for Monreal like we did for Koscielny we should let him go. He’s been a great servant and hopefully he has the good… Read more »

ManCity have not spend their money better. They have just been able to get rid of their mistake without impacting their incoming budget. They paid £42 millions for Mangala before realising that he was not good enough. Spend £40 millions on a full back, then spend another £30 millions to exchange for a better model. Any other club make a £40 millions mistakes on a fullback and their budget is messed up for the next two TW. The difference is that now that they have a world class squad, they need minimum change. So they are not buying half a… Read more »

Charlie Yeah no doubt, was saying before we’re practically a shoe-in for 4th by default at this stage due to having three players in Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepe all capable of at least 15-20 goals whereas Chelsea and United haven’t even got 1 player that you would put your house on to score 15-20 this season. Leeds,

Yes, I also thought that selling Thompson was strange as he did well in pre-season. But looks like it was part of the chain to get Tierney moving.
With him gone, there is no obvious U21 candidate to take over as left back. Joel Lopez the left back from Barcelona may need a couple of years before before being ready for the first team.

WengerEagle

CA

It’s kind of a strange one isn’t it because even though we’re moving in the right direction, Citeh and Liverpool are just so far ahead of the rest of the pack that even with the progress it’ll be 3rd place at best finishes for the foreseeable future. Little choice but to wait it out if we’re honest, Spurs last season showed that the CL is more winnable than the league at present. Just no way that you can put up 95+ points which is what’s required nowadays.

Champagne charlie

Weagle Yea I’d go along with that tbh, Ceballos is a big question mark for me personally so how he turns out will tip the scale on just how good a summer it’s been. Pepe was a superb grab, Tierney was good to get done but it was a bit of a show, Luiz is a good option given the lack of time available come the end. I would’ve liked ya to be more forceful outwardly prior though, because I think that’s the difference between Luiz and your Upamecano type signing. We get the Iwobi funds in and we buy… Read more »

Cesc,

Selling Iwobi made good sense, but only from a financial standpoint, given our starting position, our purchases , and our restricted budget.

His footballing contribution to Arsenal was underrated.

Here’s an Evertonian perspective on what he brings from a football perspective.

https://royalbluemersey.sbnation.com/2019/8/8/20791840/everton-transfer-news-confirmed-alex-iwobi-done-deal-arsenal-deadline-day-offer-sheet-silva-tactics

I’m looking forward to hearing that Mkhitaryan, Elneny Mavropanos and Mustafi are all out the door… if we could get anywhere from £35m to £50m We should take the money and put it away for the January window.

Added to the £35m to the £40m that we have coming from the Iwobi sale we have more than enough money to chase a top CB. That’s not counting the £26.5m sales we have sold on already…

WengerEagle

Valentin Mangala was bought 5 years ago, I meant since Pep’s been there. And Danilo didn’t cost 40m, he cost them 27m and they’re getting a top 3 RB in Europe in Cancelo in exchange for the 30m fee as well who Juve paid 45m for only last summer. They’ve spent their money very well considering you’d be hard pushed looking at any of their squad and saying that a player has been a flop. Mahrez is as close as you’ll get really and he was decent last season without being spectacular, still played a good role. Obviously they have… Read more »

Joel Lopez has something of the young Bellerin about him, but he is very young at 17. If we keep Kolasinac as our 2nd choice LB that gives Lopez the time he needs to break into the first team squad in 3 years time or so… if he keeps progressing.

Basically if Tierney works out we don’t have to spend on the left back position for at least 8 years.

WengerEagle

Charlie Only reason I can think for the fuckery around Upa and signing Luiz last minute is that Everton only came in very late with the Iwobi bid because they realised that Palace weren’t budging on Zaha and were insisting on silly money. Ceballos is an unknown quantity for me, seen snippets and he looks tidy and a livewire, has a bit of bite to him too which is crucial for a CM but his lack of end product is a concern. Yeah agreed, nowhere to hide for Unai now. Players copped all of the flack for the late season… Read more »

One thing Emery should do is to play backup and youngsters in the Cup games and the group stage of the Europe Cup. We have to rest up the starting 11. Spud and Chelsea are playing in the Champions League. They couldn’t rest their players even for the group games.

Valentin

WE, You are right in that ManCity even when they have made mistakes those mistakes were relatively minor. The main difference is that ManCity has a proper structure in place for Pep even before he arrived. They know the types of players he wants. They also are better negotiator than Woodward. They are prepare to walk away if they don’t like the deal. Ed Woodward seems like the kind of guy who will rather be ripped off than move away from a bad deal. Iwobi’s gone for £34?! What a piece of business!

It’s the first transfer window I see Arsenal buying more than they sell and spending some real money.

Still, that’s nowhere near as competitive as our rivals.

David Luis is ok, but we needed a better winger than Mikh.

China1

Yeah for a club like arsenal iwobi isn’t a bad squad player but you don’t turn down that sort of money for a squad player when the first team has glaring holes and our finances are somewhat limited

Good luck to iwobi, he gave his all for us and had some good games over the years. But let’s put the bigger picture of arsenal above individual squad players

China1

Southern people we have Pepe Auba RN and Saka all for the wing. Mikki only plays there if emery wants to be stupid

Southernpeople

china1

du mean xhaka or the 17 yr old kid with that name?

Elmo

It’s good that Raul worked out relatively quickly that Zaha effectively wasn’t for sale, and moved onto Pepe.

Dick Law probably wouldn’t have read that, would have fed back that he just needed more time, and then we’d have had to trolley dash on deadline day for an Iwobi-type signing once the penny finally dropped that Palace were never going to accept any offer. It’s stressful even thinking about it.

Moray

That was a great transfer window. We were never going to be able to shift or replace all of our deadwood and of course Mustafi and Xhaka remain as well as our two most well remunerated players, however we now have options to avoid playing them. Iwobi for 35-40m is fantastic business. It’s great to see Usmanov is still an Arsenal fan. The management team all deserve a pat on the back for this window. That we can punch our weight with the best of them again is a really positive sign. I suspect the meeting with Josh K and… Read more »

Let’s pray we sell a couple more deadwood players abroad before the end of the window El neny and mustafi seem like genuine contenders. If we’re not loaning our RN or Saka you have to wonder if we’ll bin off mikki as well Dumping these 3 would be unreal business. Perhaps combined they’d could bring in 40m if we got some luck, which added to the iwobi money basically buys you an elite CB give or take I always say it but it’s not just about the buying of the new guys but the ridding of the old. Last regime would have probably shipped out Jenks,Kos, Thompson for free this summer. But Raul he got a good 10 mil out of the three. Finally we’ve got a proper director. Imagine if we could somehow sell Mkhitaryan in the winter transfer window and attack Crystal Palace for Zaha again. Our frontline will surely be the best one we’ve had since DB10, Henry, Pires and Ljungberg.

China1

By the way I don’t count iwobi in the feckless or overpaid category, but he is a victim of circumstances He’s a good guy and a true arsenal lad, but he’s not elite and we need the money so it’s time arsenal start making these decisions with players who can’t elevate our first team. We’ve been humouring less than elite players since about 2010 and it’s high time we start just cutting these players out. In an ideal world, in 2-3 years we’d have a quality team and a good bench and at a time like that if we have… Read more »

If you buy zaha, we have to play two wingers and two CFs unless we’re gonna have a 50m striker on the bench. We’d also need to play 4 at the back to accommodate them, which means a 4-4-2. It could be good but I think a 4-2-1-3 makes more sense and will have as much attacking threat there abouts without needing to have another winger Also zaha is ridiculously overpriced, so I don’t see value in that transfer unless his value dropped to sub 40m. Even then, we still need an elite CB, and an elite CM either to… Read more »

If Raul can dump mustafi and Nikki this window (at least el neny has a pretty low salary iirc) I propose the forthcoming Raul statue be made out of gold rather than bronze

Wasi

CP have am unhappy player on their hands now. Someone who doesn’t want tl play for them. I think he can only go one of 2 ways now. 1. Go into obscurity because he was not allowed his dream move.
2. Elevate his game even further to show the world he has still got it and they should definitely still be after him

fsaf

China, nah man. Iwobi wasn’t sold against his will. He is a decent player that hit his ceiling for the Arsenal as he would have been used as a squad player yet again since he isn’t good enough to be a starter for us. He’d be delighted about his transfer as well. At Everton he will be given a full chance. That’s a good thing for him. I don’t think he was a victim of any kind. I think Zaha will undoubtably be disappointed to start with but I reckon he will knuckle down and produce as he left with little choice. I think any business in Jan will depend on how our season is panning out. I’d love us to strike a deal for Upe for the summer. Next summer I’d like an upgrade on Xhaka, reinforcement in CAM, another RB (only Bellerin is sufficient), a left sided winger and at CM depending on if Ceballos hasn’t done well or has, but we can’t keep him. Its a good deal for Everton. Iwobi considerably improved his overall game last season. And he is only 23 . Needs to improve his final product and he’ll be worth more than what they paid for him. So ofc they are happy. It was a good deal for all the parties involved.
Youcef Atal should be an exciting option at RB challenge Bellerin imo.

Emiratesstroller

Arsenal are going to have some difficulties in filling their quota to register players for the Europa Cup Competition. According to the Arsenal Website the club has got currently only 23 listed first team players. By my calculation we have got 6 Home Grown players assuming that Tierney can be registered on that basis. Arsenal can of course include home grown under 21 players in their squad without the need to register them. Willock,Nelson and Smith-Rowe can play on that basis. So I would question whether Arsenal will offload any further players such as Mustafi,Elneny or Mkhitaryan in Continental Transfer… Read more »

Xhaka’s deficiencies will be less visible with pass on the side and a cb that can pass.
His value will rise since teams will be interested. You heard it here 1st.

So you’re saying sell laca to accommodate zaha? Will zaha really help us much more than laca? His numbers aren’t any better from memory and what if no one bids a price we can accept for laca? Also we’ve just loaned out Eddie so we’ll be short of options without keeping laca We currently have auba laca pepe martinelli, RN and Saka as players who can operate somewhere along the wing forward and cf roles going into the season. The less our game goes through Xhaka the less times he will cost us goals. Then again, if he isn’t going to play with the ball as much what would he add to our team at all?

China1

But look if zaha utilized that clause people mentioned a while back and is able to force himself out of the club on the cheap then that’s another story

If we could have him for 35m I’d be all for it *but* we really should be giving first priority to a CB and CM with our funds surely

China1

70-80m buys you a top class and young CB. If we now have the funds I wanna see is go balls in on that.

If for the sake of argument we actually did get an elite CB in January we could push luiz to dm and drop xhaka

That would be winning all round imo

Emiratesstroller

At the moment we are overloaded with CBs at the club with Sokratis, Luiz, Mustafi, Holding, Chambers and Mavropanos.

So based on what I posted above it is possible that Chambers may be considered by Emery as an understudy Right Back for Bellerin competing with Maitland-Niles.

The arrival of Pepe as right wing makes it less necessary to play a wing back
on right side of defence.

Emiratesstroller

I think that we are more likely to look to buy Coutinho rather than Zaha in

he is a talent and will cherish every opportunity he gets playing with
Martinelli, Pepe and co .. I cant wait to see our attack charging at defenders !!

I’m really looking forward to how Aubameyang and Pepe link up because if you look at Pepe’s runs he reminds me a lot of how Ousmane Dembele used dovetail with PEA with fantastic results.

Will Özil respond into life? I hope he does… if he does it would be a fine end to his time at Arsenal and we should be able to sell him for a decent price next summer.

Pierre:”that would give us 81 points which in effect would put us in with a shout.”

Arsenal in 2017/18 – 63 points
Arsenal in 2018/19 – 70 points

I would expect us to gain another 7-10 points to last year which by all means would be progress.

I would expect City to have around 90 points again.

Pierre

You took your time Tony

I’ve had no petty little jibes from you for a while now , couldn’t resist though could you .

I’m sure you recognise the fact ( being an intelligent fellow) that If Ozil as you say “performs a miracle ” it won’t be because of Emery it will be in spite of him.

Your opinion of Emery is pretty similar to mine so as far as I’m concerned , we are singing off the same song sheet.

Leeds: “I’m really looking forward to how Aubameyang and Pepe link up because if you look at Pepe’s runs he reminds me a lot of how Ousmane Dembele used dovetail with PEA with fantastic results.”

Ousmane much more of a playmaker/assist machine with huge techical skills. From the highlights I saw of Pepe he loves to shoot and not that much to pass lol. I bet he’ll fit in well but they aren’t really all that similar imo.

Now Ousmane Auba Pepe would be what dreams are made of. Too dreamy even.

I see City, Spurs and Pool being in the mix for EPL title provided none of them sells their key players to European clubs. We certainly have the 4th best squad in the league now, so 4th is the bare minimum we should strive for. Emery can’t afford to falter again this season.

I think Spurs will need to keep Kane and son fit and firing. Without either they won’t be hitting the 97/98 points tally needed to compete with the top two.

Lolz at Spurs challenging for the title… Haven’t we been where before with that lot down the road….

It’s City, Liverpool and then the rest of us chasing the last 2 spots

Only time will tell. 😉

Good call on Pogba, I didn’t think of that!

Tony

Aw shucks Pierre thought you might be missing me.

Just a bit of fun and I always expect something back from you for the crack.

Anyway, I’m not as vociferous about Emery as you are. I’ll see what he does before I’m in ‘Emery Knows Best’ club.

If Raul brought in someone better now I wouldn’t lose sleep with Emery going.

However, he’s what we have for now and he hasn’t sunk to Wenger depths; he’s only been here 12 months.

We’ll know by Xmas if Emery is in or out.

Whats your thoughts on the score Sunday?

City
Liverpool
Arsenal( all on you Emery)
Spurs
Chelsea
United.

Good stuff but…

If we knew Iwobi was going for £30m-£40m (and we did)…why didn’t we push for the lad from RB in Germany much much harder? This is my only disappointment of the window.

Grabbing him and Saliba with Holding would give us three CB’s for the next 10 years. Along with Leno, Tierney and Bellerin we have the youngest and potentially hottest back line in the league for a very long time to come.

I hope we go in again for him this Jan or at least secure him pre contract.

Agreed. Spurs don’t have the squad depth Pool and City have. Heavily reliant on Kane and Son in attack. Moura will have to step up if they are to have a realistic chance. They have improved their midfield though with addition of Ndombele and Le Celso.

I still hate Arsenal.
I still hate Emery.
I still hate the whole world.

It is believed that Lo Celso was brought in as Eriksen’s replacement. So they wouldn’t really upgrade all that much on that position if it was indeed the case.

Ryan Sessegnon was their other transfer in a position where they have Danny Rose, who could leave, and Ben Davies signed a new 5-year deal with them in July.

Their only transfer that could make a big difference is Ndombele.

I’m going to make a prediction.

Neither MC or Liverpool will hit the 90 points mark this season, irrespective who wins the title.

The top 10 teams will take points of each other and there will be a greater distribution of points amongst all the teams.

I also envisage a fair few surprises along the way.

TR7

Well, it will be fun if either Wolves or Leicester sneak in to top 6 at the cost of either Chelsea or United.

You forgot “I hate Monday’s”

Tony “However, he’s what we have for now and he hasn’t sunk to Wenger depths; he’s only been here 12 months.” Emery needs to win a trophy before he sinks to wenger’s “depths” . ..was it a trophy every other year on average or thereabouts. Sunday , I am not sure if any of the new players will.start though I am hoping to see Pepe, Ceballos and Luiz at least get some minutes ….3 very talented players who I am really looking forward to seeing in an Arsenal shirt. Pepe , Aubamayang and Lacazette up top is a dream scenario.… Read more »

GoH,
I think Leipzig told us that if we want Upamecano we gotta pay his releause clause – 100m euro.

In 2020 his release clause lowers to 80m euro. Which is pretty close to what we were willing to pay up.

Better Leicester/Watford/West Ham at the expense of Chelsea, Spuds & United.

Even oldish men can still dream………

I’ll think of a caveat for the adjective ‘Oldish’
