I can’t say I was expecting to come away from the Barcelona game with a win, so there’s no point in throwing my kale puffs at the laptop. It’s preseason, Emery appears to still be feeling out his starting 11, nothing matters until the Newcastle game.

We had a fairly positive first half. We took the lead from the usual suspect… Auba. He received a ball from Mesut and unleashed a devastating strike past the Barca second choice keeper. It really was a brutal strike from a man who looks at the absolute peak of his physical and technical powers.

There was a notable performance from Willock. He didn’t let the game overawe him. He works hard, he shows great composure for a 19-year-old and his ability to read play and turn the ball over fast is going to be a big asset moving into the new season. That goal-line clearance he made really was spectacular, absolutely ace concentration.

The same problems were still there, hanging around like those greasy pigeons that eat the Chinese food at the Camden stables. The issues are now so familiar my heart doesn’t skip a beat. We looked confused in defence, particularly in the second half. It doesn’t matter how you chop it up, AMN is not a right back, Chambers is never going to make it, and Mustafi will always, always let players get in behind him. I’m also not sure about our continued attempts to play out the back from way deep, especially when we’re relying on slow players that make lots of mistakes to move the ball forward.

We also have the same old issues up top. Mikhi has been a disaster signing. He’s lost the pace that stood him out, and now he looks like he’s lost interest. He gives the ball away far too often and he’s painfully casual about being average.

The kids are showing promise, but most of them are greener than a bowl of salad. The pace on offer gives us a different dimension. There are flashed is excellence. I just struggle to see Emery giving them a chance in such a high-pressure season. Martinelli, Saka and Reiss all look like they need another loan… but given the choice, I think I’d rather see them in our starting 11 over Iwobi or Mikhi.

The transfer gossip post-match is centred around Umtiti and Tierney. Both are better than what we have. Both were very robust players until last season. Both represent a huge risk. Raul is in a tough spot, his contacts game has its limits, he didn’t have a chief scout for 7 months, and now he’s backed into a corner. If he blows money on them and they’re good for 40 games, we have a very strong chance of Champions League. If things go wrong, on the basis of what we’ve seen in preseason, we really could be in for a bit of a nightmare defensively.

Still, quite exciting, wouldn’t you say? In January we were all shitting our pants that this summer was going to be about #AnnouncePerisic and #WelcomeEverBanega. I’d take your shoe over those two.

Let’s see if Raul can make some magic happen before Sunday!

60m for Upa?

Half a decade worth of installments needed to facilitate that.

Dream10

I’m not convinced by Rugani. Seems a laid-back composed type of defender who may lack aggression. Don’t want us to sign an Italian Rob Holding.

Left testicle

At least we’ll have a transfer window deadline day with some anticipation.

Yep, too bad Ozil is already with us.

Presuming it’s Rugiani as the chosen one,how good is he? Worth the effort? Money? What about Dunk or Tarkowski ?

Dream

Agree, don’t see him well suited to PL football.

Would get bullied by plenty of CF’s over here.

Freddie Ljungberg

The Upamecano rumour got me really excited, that would prove once and for all that we’re back being a serious football club again.

It’s a bit steep at 60m but it would sort out our central defence for the next decade with him and Saliba and Holding. Much better value than average, overpriced english cloggers like Maguire and Dunk etc. With the way transfer fees are going we could make a healthy profit on him if we decided to sell in 5-6 years too.

Marko

If I’m Leipzig and I’ve seen just seen slabhead go for £85 Million I might reject £60 Million. Nah most clubs on the continent are more aware and know for example that they’d be waiting a long time to get 80 million for the likes of Upamecano for example. Take De Ligt been hearing all summer long about how he was going for 70/80 million and instead it’s like 57 million. Upamecano also has 2 years left on his contract. Hopefully it has legs and I wouldn’t be surprised if it does honestly cause it seems this summer we’ve had… Read more »

I for one am shocked that a player that was riding the bench for UTD at a time that they were dying for a creative player should have been a dead giveaway that said player would be a garbage signing.

Arsenal’s collective is “average”, adding an average player to an average squad was always going to be a useless signing.

WE That’s what I’m saying though. The issue might not be the £60 Million price but rather is that the guaranteed figure or with add ons and how long are we asking to pay for it. If we get fees for Mustafi and Kozz along with money from Bielik and Asano we could well be able to give Leipzig £20 Million this summer of the total but it’s whether they accept that and then how quickly they want the rest. ‘What about Dunk or Tarkowski ?’

You want to spend £40-60 Million on them?

fsaf

WE,
Manure conceded more goals than we did last season – 54. Chelsea and spuds had 39 goals against. Maguire alone will lower the number very close to the 40s. If you want someone you pay the premium. It’s how it works. And what we should have done long time ago instead of settling for number 3 and 4 in our lists. Better buy 1 superstar and several young talents like we did this year, than spend 100m in 5 players each ~20m. Would have turned out much better for us in the end.

WengerEagle

Chavs are fucked going into the season with 33 year old Giroud as their prinary goal getter.

Batshuayi is trash and Abraham was playing Championship football only a few months ago.

Really hope that United don’t pull off Dybala. Only real threat for 4th imo.

Dream10

55m pounds for Upamecano? A very high fee. I don’t think he’s better than Saliba or Konaté. But, they are both right sided CBs.
Issa Diop had a very good first PL season. West Ham were looking for 65m…..

I was all for looking at a midtable CB from the EPL and giving them a chance. But the prices being spoken about for them are the prices you’d pay for top level CBs.

EPL teams are chancing it and seeing if sides like Arsenal or Everton or United are stupid enough to pay those figures.

WengerEagle

Yeah could definitely see it happening factoring in his contract situation and fact that he is their 3rd choice centre half behind Konate and Orban.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they sought Nelson on loan as part of any deal given he scored goals for Hoffenheim.

Yeah something can be done.

It might not be a bad idea for Nelson either, though apparently Leipzig are keen on having Smith Rowe on loan again.

We’ve got Kozz, Mustafi and Elneny who could potentially be sold as well which, depending on how much we get in total and get this summer of that total, might mean we can offer more of the Upamecano fee this summer.

Marko

A deal can be done, offer them Smith Rowe on loan as well

Can definitely see something happening in that regard. Just checking out their business this summer and they’ve spent 50 odd million bringing in just 13 million. Ampadu a CB brought in on loan from Chelsea and while they have brought in a few midfielders one of those the highly rated Hannes Wolf has been ruled out for the season so I would imagine that ESR would still be of interest. Lukaku will end up in Italy I reckon, Conte is hard on his case too and United know that they fucked up paying do much for him when he’s not an elite CF.

If it’s not a Dybala swap I reckon they’ll settle for Icardi in a swap. Puts up excellent numbers barring last season which was a mess with all the disruption. He’s better than Lukaku even if he has a crazy bint for a missus/agent.

He is. Alot in fact. For one thing irrespective of how you feel about Guendouzi he is a CM first foremost only. He knows his position and there’s actually a place for him here. AMN is neither good enough for RB/RWB/CM/RW for Arsenal. He’ll never be able to hold down a proper position because ultimately he either doesn’t know what his favoured position is or he’s simply not good enough for it. He’ll be gone in a year two max

Marko

We looked better before the break vs Barca. As soon as we put ozil and Mkhitaryan on the wings we stank the place out.

Where did they play prior to that? Also they didn’t really play on the wings second half.
