I can’t say I was expecting to come away from the Barcelona game with a win, so there’s no point in throwing my kale puffs at the laptop. It’s preseason, Emery appears to still be feeling out his starting 11, nothing matters until the Newcastle game.

We had a fairly positive first half. We took the lead from the usual suspect… Auba. He received a ball from Mesut and unleashed a devastating strike past the Barca second choice keeper. It really was a brutal strike from a man who looks at the absolute peak of his physical and technical powers.

There was a notable performance from Willock. He didn’t let the game overawe him. He works hard, he shows great composure for a 19-year-old and his ability to read play and turn the ball over fast is going to be a big asset moving into the new season. That goal-line clearance he made really was spectacular, absolutely ace concentration.

The same problems were still there, hanging around like those greasy pigeons that eat the Chinese food at the Camden stables. The issues are now so familiar my heart doesn’t skip a beat. We looked confused in defence, particularly in the second half. It doesn’t matter how you chop it up, AMN is not a right back, Chambers is never going to make it, and Mustafi will always, always let players get in behind him. I’m also not sure about our continued attempts to play out the back from way deep, especially when we’re relying on slow players that make lots of mistakes to move the ball forward.

We also have the same old issues up top. Mikhi has been a disaster signing. He’s lost the pace that stood him out, and now he looks like he’s lost interest. He gives the ball away far too often and he’s painfully casual about being average.

The kids are showing promise, but most of them are greener than a bowl of salad. The pace on offer gives us a different dimension. There are flashed is excellence. I just struggle to see Emery giving them a chance in such a high-pressure season. Martinelli, Saka and Reiss all look like they need another loan… but given the choice, I think I’d rather see them in our starting 11 over Iwobi or Mikhi.

The transfer gossip post-match is centred around Umtiti and Tierney. Both are better than what we have. Both were very robust players until last season. Both represent a huge risk. Raul is in a tough spot, his contacts game has its limits, he didn’t have a chief scout for 7 months, and now he’s backed into a corner. If he blows money on them and they’re good for 40 games, we have a very strong chance of Champions League. If things go wrong, on the basis of what we’ve seen in preseason, we really could be in for a bit of a nightmare defensively.

Still, quite exciting, wouldn’t you say? In January we were all shitting our pants that this summer was going to be about #AnnouncePerisic and #WelcomeEverBanega. I’d take your shoe over those two.

Let’s see if Raul can make some magic happen before Sunday!

I’m not convinced by Rugani. Seems a laid-back composed type of defender who may lack aggression. Don’t want us to sign an Italian Rob Holding.

  2. Uwot?

Presuming it’s Rugiani as the chosen one,how good is he? Worth the effort? Money? What about Dunk or Tarkowski ?

  3. Freddie Ljungberg

The Upamecano rumour got me really excited, that would prove once and for all that we’re back being a serious football club again.

It’s a bit steep at 60m but it would sort out our central defence for the next decade with him and Saliba and Holding. Much better value than average, overpriced english cloggers like Maguire and Dunk etc. With the way transfer fees are going we could make a healthy profit on him if we decided to sell in 5-6 years too.

  4. Marko

If I’m Leipzig and I’ve seen just seen slabhead go for £85 Million I might reject £60 Million.

Nah most clubs on the continent are more aware and know for example that they’d be waiting a long time to get 80 million for the likes of Upamecano for example. Take De Ligt been hearing all summer long about how he was going for 70/80 million and instead it’s like 57 million. Upamecano also has 2 years left on his contract. Hopefully it has legs and I wouldn’t be surprised if it does honestly cause it seems this summer we’ve had actual first choice targets

  5. TitsMcGee

We also have the same old issues up top. Mikhi has been a disaster signing. ”

I for one am shocked that a player that was riding the bench for UTD at a time that they were dying for a creative player should have been a dead giveaway that said player would be a garbage signing.

Arsenal’s collective is “average”, adding an average player to an average squad was always going to be a useless signing.

  6. Left testicle

Half a decade worth of installments needed to facilitate that.
    …..
or a QuickQuick short term loan at 292% pa (fixed)

  7. Cesc Appeal

    WE

    That’s what I’m saying though.

The issue might not be the £60 Million price but rather is that the guaranteed figure or with add ons and how long are we asking to pay for it.

If we get fees for Mustafi and Kozz along with money from Bielik and Asano we could well be able to give Leipzig £20 Million this summer of the total but it’s whether they accept that and then how quickly they want the rest.

Let’s just hope there’s something going on there.

A deal can be done, offer them Smith Rowe on loan as well, maybe even see if they’re interested in Mavropanos.

With Leipzig’s defensive options they probably wouldn’t mind selling him provided they can invest in something else in the midfield or what have you.

  8. Leftsidesanch

Giroud chipping in with enough goals to fire Chelsea to a CL spot..

Say it with a straight face Val, go on son!

  9. fsaf

    WE,
Manure conceded more goals than we did last season – 54. Chelsea and spuds had 39 goals against. Maguire alone will lower the number very close to the 40s. If you want someone you pay the premium. It’s how it works. And what we should have done long time ago instead of settling for number 3 and 4 in our lists. Better buy 1 superstar and several young talents like we did this year, than spend 100m in 5 players each ~20m. Would have turned out much better for us in the end.

  10. WengerEagle

Chavs are fucked going into the season with 33 year old Giroud as their prinary goal getter.

Batshuayi is trash and Abraham was playing Championship football only a few months ago.

Really hope that United don’t pull off Dybala. Only real threat for 4th imo.

  11. Dream10

55m pounds for Upamecano? A very high fee. I don’t think he’s better than Saliba or Konaté. But, they are both right sided CBs.
Issa Diop had a very good first PL season. West Ham were looking for 65m…..

  12. Cesc Appeal

I was all for looking at a midtable CB from the EPL and giving them a chance. But the prices being spoken about for them are the prices you’d pay for top level CBs.

EPL teams are chancing it and seeing if sides like Arsenal or Everton or United are stupid enough to pay those figures.

  13. WengerEagle

    CA

Yeah could definitely see it happening factoring in his contract situation and fact that he is their 3rd choice centre half behind Konate and Orban.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they sought Nelson on loan as part of any deal given he scored goals for Hoffenheim.

  14. Receding Hairline

“Chavs are fucked going into the season with 33 year old Giroud as their prinary goal getter.”

Get with the program Eagle, we have been told they are fcked without Giroud. They will “start like a house on fire” and will only stop if he gets injured.

“Really hope that United don’t pull off Dybala. Only real threat for 4th imo.”

Talks have ended apparently. Dybala cannot suffer the indignity of being a swap with cash in a deal that buys Lukaku, can’t say i blame him

  15. CG

    You want Top 4

    I’ll get you top 4

    Leno

    Cahill, Dunk, Sok

    Sead K AMN ( Hector)

    Ozil,Willock, Xhaka

    PEA/LACA/PEPE( perm 2 from 3)

    That gets u top 4
And not a clipboard in sight.

Rest of the rabble can play in The Loosers cup if they are naughty boys

    Piece of cake.

  16. gunnershabz

i do think we left it really late with a top class defender especially man u spending £85m on Harry Mcquire

most clubs now will use that value for their players

even marseille coach AVB is looking forward to english deadline finishing on thursday as the prices will go down

  17. Receding Hairline

“I was all for looking at a midtable CB from the EPL and giving them a chance. But the prices being spoken about for them are the prices you’d pay for top level CBs.”

    75m gets you Nathan Ake

    40m gets you Lewis Dunk

Probably 25m can only get you Titus Bramble from Stowmarket Town FC

  18. WengerEagle

    fsaf

No doubt United will be more solid at the back with Maguire and Bissaka. 130m is crazy money for the pair though, no getting around that.

Their forward line is still bang average and barring Pogba their CM isn’t great either. Will once again struggle this season.

  19. Cesc Appeal

    WE

    Yeah something can be done.

It might not be a bad idea for Nelson either, though apparently Leipzig are keen on having Smith Rowe on loan again.

We’ve got Kozz, Mustafi and Elneny who could potentially be sold as well which, depending on how much we get in total and get this summer of that total, might mean we can offer more of the Upamecano fee this summer.

  20. Marko

A deal can be done, offer them Smith Rowe on loan as well

Can definitely see something happening in that regard. Just checking out their business this summer and they’ve spent 50 odd million bringing in just 13 million. Ampadu a CB brought in on loan from Chelsea and while they have brought in a few midfielders one of those the highly rated Hannes Wolf has been ruled out for the season so I would imagine that ESR would still be of interest. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though but let’s hope it goes through

  21. Freddie Ljungberg

    You want Top 4

    I’ll get you top 4

    Leno
Cahill, Dunk, SokSead K AMN ( Hector)

For anyone having even a shred of doubt that this guy is completely off his rockers. Proven without doubt once again, Well done Tick Dick

  22. Marko

Really hope that United don’t pull off Dybala. Only real threat for 4th imo.

Haven’t you heard he’s not interested in going to them. And I quote “would rather shit myself” end quote

  23. andy1886

Never rated Giroud that highly but even without Hazard would you bet against them scoring against our defence? Without improvement there we can still lose to anyone on a bad day. Wouldn’t write the chavs off just yet.

  24. WengerEagle

    RH

Lukaku will end up in Italy I reckon, Conte is hard on his case too and United know that they fucked up paying do much for him when he’s not an elite CF.

If it’s not a Dybala swap I reckon they’ll settle for Icardi in a swap. Puts up excellent numbers barring last season which was a mess with all the disruption. He’s better than Lukaku even if he has a crazy bint for a missus/agent.

  25. Marko

fact that he is their 3rd choice centre half behind Konate and Orban.

What are you talking about he was first choice until he got injured.

  26. WengerEagle

Just shows you what a force on and off the pitch that CR7 is for Juventus when they are willing to risk it all to win the CL with him.

Willing to turf their 25 year old jewel who had a career season in 17/18 just for a shot at building around a 34 year old Ronaldo for a season or two assault at old big ears.

  27. CG

    Fred

    It’s a bloody great team

Muscular, physical, technical, powerful, balanced, athletic, youthful but experienced

No one would take liberties with this team

And we would have one bloody captain

    Dunk.

    Top 4 in the bag.

  28. Marko

    Cahill, Dunk, Sok

Look at that for a back 3 and fucking marvel. It’s only football… they’re only tears of sadness

  29. fsaf

    WE,
If Manure get Icardi they’ll be pretty set for a top 4 imo. Not saying they’ll get it but it would be a very strong team on paper. Solskjaer though. Not convinced at all by him.

    CGAugust 5, 2019    13:51:36

Everton seem to be building a very powerful and athletic squad.( note the sensible fees they are shelling out – compared to us)

They have only 38 games to navigate

Whilst we have a minimum of 16 Loosers Cup fixtures to deal with..

I’ll add them to the list:

Spurs,City,Man Utd,Chelsea, Liverpool and Now Everton that we will finish behind.

    And If Leicester get Dunk….
We might even finish below them.

    Any news on Tierney?

    >>>>>>>>>>

    CG,

You frustrate me; I find your constant negativity frustrating.

    Can’t we be positive?

Positive that it takes time to turn things around but that there are genuine signs of a plan and a vision taking place and that we are identifying players to upgrade and are looking to move on our deadwood?

Maybe because of the over inflated market the prices of CBs coupled with our lack of CL football meant that the £72m was worth spending on Pepe because the opportunity to get him now as opposed to in a year or 2 when his value will be over £100m if he lit Italy up was too good to turn down and that we have a ready made replacement for Aubameyang in a few years time?

Maybe next year there’ll be more CBs available, maybe some new youngsters have a breakthrough we could spend big on?

As for our league position I am willing to have a friendly bet with you; you make a bet that we’ll finish in 6th behind City,,Liverpool, Spurs, Utd & Chelsea and I’ll make a bet that we finish 3rd above Utd, Chelsea and spurs.

We’ll both put £10 sterling on it and see who comes out better, yes?

  31. Receding Hairline

“Cahill, Dunk, SokLook at that for a back 3 and fucking marvel. It’s only football… they’re only tears of sadness”

That back three would probably drop all pretenses of football and engage in a full blown wrestling match in games against City and Liverpool

Come to think of it we only shipped 9 goals less than BRIGHTON!!!! That’s unbelievable

  32. bennydevito

I amend my bet – you have to bet we finish 7th behind Everton, or 8th behind Everton and Leicester if they sign Dunk

And I’ll bet we finish 3rd above all that .

  33. WengerEagle

Not worried about Everton at all, overcompensating and overpaying in the market.

Still lack a 20 goal a season man up top and real class in CM. Pretty average players even though they’ve spent a fortune.

  34. Leftsidesanch

    Benny,

Oh no you don’t kind chap.

I want to profit off Little G’s idiocy before anyone else does. I suspect he’s on here to fill the character of doom and gloom and resident idiot. He wouldn’t put his money where his mouth is. If he does, I want in.

I also want in on the bet that we will be relegated within 5 years. My youngster doesn’t say as many stupid things as he does, and 12 year olds have their moments.

  35. Un na naai

    Marko

You’ve got a real hard on for Guendouzi don’t you? Strange that you’re love of youngsters only stretches as far as the non British ones…The utter hypocrisy on display whenyou slate Ox and AMN but hype up Guendouzi who’s shown less promise than both. AMN May make mistakes at rb but he’s still chipping in with goals, assists and end product despite playing out of position40 odd games in midfield for Guendouzi and what’s he done? Pass, pass pass. Nothing else. Nothing.

Now I’m not saying I don’t see qualities there. I’m not saying he won’t go on and become a very good player. I’m saying thus far he’s not applied himself as well as the other two. Just played it safe a la Denilson in08 and you can’t stop defending the kid whilst falling over yourself to attack the English. Weird.

  36. Marko

He started last season poorly for them, Konate and Orban played more as the weeks went on until his iniury problems.

It’s easy enough to find these things out. According to transfermarket he started and finished 13 of the first 18 games in the league prior to his injury. 4 Europa League and two German cup games too. Previous season he started and completed 24 of 29 games too as well as being ever present in the Champions League for them.

  37. fsaf

    WE,
Re what you said about Everton. I’d look for some of the predictions that some ppl made in August 2018 if I wasn’t too lazy. Stuff like – We’re gonna finish 8th, Newcastle and Everton are going to break in to top 4 etc etc. This shiet never get’s old.

  38. James.wood

    Sebastian “Sal” BIBBO .
By the way is our goalkeeper coach.
Played for Sheffield united TWICE in his 3 year career with them.
Played Amateur football after that for Bath.?

Why was Lehman sacked perhaps he spoke his mind to much.
and said how bad our goalkeeping situation is.?
Perhaps he spoke he’s mind on what was in front of him.?

  39. Marko

You’ve got a real hard on for Guendouzi don’t you?

Actually not at all I’ve called for him to be loaned several times and even now would much prefer him to go out on loan. But I also don’t shit on him at every available opportunity and I’m not stupid enough to think that the likes of AMN or Ameachi are so much better. Like I said bought for 7 million we could sell him tomorrow for a massive profit

  40. bennydevito

    Leftsidesanch,

Yes you can get in on it, we’ll finalise it on transfer deadline day and if Leicester sign Dunk, CG has to bet we’ll finish 8th behind City, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea, Utd, Everton & Leicester, if not Dunk then 7th behind Everton but above Leicester.

  41. Receding Hairline

“Why was Lehman sacked perhaps he spoke his mind to much.
and said how bad our goalkeeping situation is.?
Perhaps he spoke he’s mind on what was in front of him.?”

Was that why he was sacked at Augsburg too?? Perhaps he isn’t a very good coach. people still speak their minds and keep their jobs

  42. Marko

Strange that you’re love of youngsters only stretches as far as the non British ones

Not true. I like Saka alot and think Willock has something about him. I’m just not stupid enough to think that any of them are remotely ready yet. I definitely dispise the fuck out of AMN. Nothing to do with what it says on his passport more to do with his abject performances

  43. Marko

AMN May make mistakes at rb but he’s still chipping in with goals, assists and end product despite playing out of position

Yep end product sure. Also again with the out of position stuff where is his best position? Other than some midtable club in the championship

  44. James.wood

Receding he joined Augsburg 29 Jan 2019.
With the German close season .
I hardly think he has been given much chance.?

He hardly needs any endorsement he was very top of the tree.
And I’m sure will make a top coach.
Just a footnote has he been sacked.?

  45. Receding Hairline

“Yep end product sure. Also again with the out of position stuff where is his best position? Other than some midtable club in the championship”

He was a flying winger for Ipswich apparently, if you can call 2 goals in 32 appearances flying

  46. Micheal

The defence has been a car-crash for at least two years, possibly longer. Why are we three days from the end of the 2019 transfer window without selling the unwanted players and bringing in urgent replacements.
Thank goodness we have a new regime at the helm.

  47. bennydevito

    Arsenal 11/5 to finish 3rd.

They’re not very good odds, I’d have to stick £100 on it to make it worthwhile as a tenner would only get me £22 plus my tenner back obviously.

Arsenal 4/11 to finish 6th and the closest I can find to 8th is not top 6 at 9/4.

  48. Un na naai

    Marko

I don’t think AMN is much better than Guendouzi. I just do not think he’s worse as things stand. He’s shown he’s capable of making things happen in the final third and 95% of the time is very tidy with the ball

His big problem is his concentration levels

Guendouzi’s is his lack of personality or authority on the pitch. Clearly has a lot to offer but doesn’t impose himself

I’m just making the point that you are ragging on a young lad who’s learning the game still.

And of course they are ready. Not ready to start week in week out but ready to have chances at arsenal.

In fact they actually look better than our senior options in most cases
Xakha, Mustafi, ozil and Mkhitaryan have looked pedestrian for so long and the youngsters have now started showing them up further when given their shout.

We looked better before the break vs Barca. As soon as we put ozil and Mkhitaryan on the wings we stank the place out.

  49. Nelson

Tierney is still injured. He will not be match fit before Christmas. We should wait until January to sign him. We should try to sign a CB instead.
Guen can play a CM and not a deep lying DM. He has a good engine. He can run with the ball and deliver an accurate forward pass. Now he is defending like a boy. He needs to gain 10lbs upper body strength before he can defend like a man.

  50. Marko

I just do not think he’s worse as things stand

He is. Alot in fact. For one thing irrespective of how you feel about Guendouzi he is a CM first foremost only. He knows his position and there’s actually a place for him here. AMN is neither good enough for RB/RWB/CM/RW for Arsenal. He’ll never be able to hold down a proper position because ultimately he either doesn’t know what his favoured position is or he’s simply not good enough for it. He’ll be gone in a year two max

  51. Marko

We looked better before the break vs Barca. As soon as we put ozil and Mkhitaryan on the wings we stank the place out.

Where did they play prior to that? Also they didn’t really play on the wings second half.

  52. Batistuta

I still don’t get this whole Tierney obsession too… We should have moved on from him the minute we found our he was injured or that Celtic were going to be dicks about the whole thing.

That defence doesn’t deserve our lukewarm approach to it after all these years

  53. Un na naai

“RB/RWB/CM/RW for Arsenal. He’ll never be able to hold down a proper position because ultimately he either doesn’t know what his favoured position is or he’s simply not good enough for it. He’ll be gone in a year two max“

    Marko

He’s not been tried there because of his adaptability. Had he been in a possession of such a narrow set of skills he’d be just a cm but because he clearly is athletic and can defend (Guendouzi isn’t and can’t) then he’s drew the short straw

    Same happened to Ox

    Prior to that
    Ozil was 10
Mkhitaryan on his usual right spot

Willock and xakha in the middle
Mkhitaryan on the left and ozil on the right in a flat 4 next to Guendouzi and xakha is a horror show of a midfield
Not one player in there who puts his foot in

Guendouzi being the only one even capable really.

  54. Marko

He’s not been tried there because of his adaptability

    …eh

he clearly is athletic and can defend

He can’t defend. He’s by and large a dumbshit when it comes to defending. Not even up for debate

  55. Un na naai

    Marko

    He CAN defend
He proves so in every match. Making a silly mistake through lack of concentration doesn’t mean he doesn’t defend

  56. DigitalBob

If the Upamecano bid is true, its a great sign that Raul understands we need a proper centre back. Maybe some youngsters on loan will sweeten the deal?

I would never consider Cahill, he’s done as a top flight defender and would be Silvestre was to Arsene for Emery, stay clear!

I agree with Nelson though, might be best to wait for Tierney………..not a smart move to spend on an injury prone, currently injured player.

  57. Marko

Also at fault for numerous goals last season and 3 of the 4 conceded in the Europa final but sure wouldn’t quite condemn just yet. Guendouzi though… absolute fraud

  58. Chika

“Celtic are closing in on the signing of Brentford LB, Rico Henry.”

I really hope Tierney turn out to be AVAILABLE and excellent for us. The manner we’ve chased him is inexplicable.

  59. Un na naai

    Marko

He was at fault for one of the goals conceded in the final. Just stop

Either way he’s a 21 year old midfielder being asked to play right back next to Mustafi and behind Mkhitaryan

What did you think he was going to play like cafu?

  60. Emiratesstroller

My gut feeling is that there are now only two players left in the frame who might join Arsenal before the transfer window closes.

    These are:

RUGANI at CB. Arsenal want to take him loan. My suspicion is that Juventus would prefer to sell him to raise money for Lukaku.

TIERNEY at LB. Arsenal will have to spend at least £25 Million on this player
who is currently unfit and unlikely to play before the end of November.

My view is that Arsenal may have a maximum transfer budget of £25-30 Million left to spend on a defender. In an ideal world they may prefer to spend
the money on Tierney and loan Rugani.

However, if I have the choice of spending money on one player this summer
my preference will probably be on Rugani. At least we know that he will be
    FIT this side of Christmas.

From my perspective CB is a more urgent requirement this summer than
LB with Monreal staying at the club. If we do not buy Tierney this week I am
sure that he will be still available in January.

  61. Marko

Either way he’s a 21 year old midfielder

Who never plays in midfield. Makes sense. That under Wenger and Emery btw. Oh and whoever was Manager at Ipswich too he played him RM and not CM. By all accounts it seems this suppose midfielder has only played a handful of appearences in midfield for. Also nearly 22. Also absolutely at fault for 3 of the 4 goals conceded in the final. I’m guessing if he was ivorian born with ivorian parents you probably wouldn’t be going to bat for him.

  62. Carts

    Upamecano for 60m?

Why the fuck do we pay our scouts however many thousand per year if they can’t identify PROPER defender who aren’t made of Feta cheese or mushy peas?

Now we’ve committed in excess of 35m on an 18 year old who’ll land next season; and we’re about two double that figure on a defender that virtually went to Leipzig unchallenged a couple of seasons back for a fraction of what he’s about to be sold for.

  63. Un na naai

“I’m guessing if he was ivorian born with ivorian parents you probably wouldn’t be going to bat for him.”

    No. Of course not.
Not like I ever appreciated a non English National is it?
Not like I’ve supported the signing of Saliba or the potential signing of upamencano?
    No no.

It’s just that I being an English Londoner who supports arsenal place more importance on producing English players from the academy than you do. Maybe that gives me a blind spot but you seem to react with relish to the mistakes or misfortune of our youngsters. I understand not caring that much but your defence of Guendouzi when criticism arose has shine a light on the fact that you defend certain underperforming youngsters.
Just not the English ones. The old scars run deep eh marko?

  64. DigitalBob

Marko – As you said he’s a CM playing RB, yes he was exposed in the final but overall the lads still got alot of upside so I would persist. If he had a quality centre back next to him he’d be better. Mustafi is not who you want next to you as an attacking RB.

    That’s the Raul way

Sven likes to I’d identify them early.
Martinelli could be such a piece of business for us though. Never know
Nelson Saka willock and Nketiah May be worth £200m between them in a couple of years

  66. Emiratesstroller

    Un na naii

The one position in the club where Arsenal no longer have a problem is WING. We have bought two players this summer in Pepe and Martinelli and we have also on our books Iwobi, Nelson and Saka. That does not include also Aubameyang who can play there when required.

Iwobi can play AMF when required so I will be surprised if he leaves this summer. Nelson can be loaned out and Saka who is 17 could play in Cup and
European games to give him some first team experience.

At the moment my concern is that Arsenal’s defence is a mess and still leaking
silly goals even against weak opposition.

We know already that Koscielny will leave in this transfer window. So there
is a CB vacancy even if Mustafi were to stay. Mavropanos has shown absolutely
nothing last season to suggest that he is good enough to play in first team.

  67. Un na naai

    Stroller

    Yes. I’m in full agreement
Spend what we can on a cb this week.
Upamencano would be great. Even if he’s only 20 with Saliba coming next season we will have a 3 centre halves for the future with Sokratis to add experience

  68. Graham62

    Kellyanne Conway.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

Christiane Amanpour on CNN actually made her look so fudging stupid.

Too be honest, not that difficult to do.

    Sorry Pedro, I know it’s politics , but I can’t help myself.

I’m sure Mrs Conways children are well proud of their Mum and her ethical and moral principles.

  69. Cesc Appeal

What is with the whinging? I just don’t get it. Its incessant.

If we actually managed to sign Upamecano we’ve done both things in terms of a big money signing and signing a player before they are a big name in Saliba.

We could end up paying half of Upamecano’s fee by selling Kozz, Mustafi and Elneny as well. Then Chambers after that next season to take off even more after Saliba arrives.

That is exactly how you do it.

  70. Carts

    Un na

    Sven had the right idea.

I’ve alway said that there’s a bizarre under representation of Eastern European defenders in the English leagues.

It boggles the mind. I mean, do we not give a fuck about the Croat league, or potential talents in Bulgaria and Poland – seriously, what gives.

Where’s the next Vidic going to come from.

  71. Pierre

Shame the Ceballos ,I was looking forward to seeing him at the base of our midfield , let’s hope he recovers in time for the game at the weekend.

  72. Leedsgunner

Upamecano is good but Konate is a better defender. However beggars can’t be choosers. Upamecano would be the best defender in our line up this decade.

  73. Freddie Ljungberg

I can’t believe people are actually whining about this after complaining that we haven’t bought any defenders, yes prices are over inflated now but that’s the same for everyone.

We could potentially secure our starting CB pairing for the next 10 years for the same amount Man U paid for a 26 year old, not even world class defender.

No more scrambling around looking for a CB that no one wants, for 10 years! That’s worth every penny we spend.

If it doesn’t work out or they want to move on later on we’ll likely get more than our money back anyway and can reinvest instead of buying them old, let them retire or slink off for a couple of million like we’ve been doing lately.

Go all out for Upamecano and wait with Tierney if we don’t have the funds for both.

Then we have 3 more weeks to sell off Kos and Mustafi, Jenks, Elneny, Mikhi etc.

  74. Paulinho

I don’t expect us to sign anybody before the window.

Think we’ll go with what we’ve got and bide our time with the likes of Upamecano and strike, like we did with Pepe, in the summer.

We would’ve heard of a concrete link by now, and it usually takes a few days to get things over the line, so in my mind tonight is the the deadline to see whether we sign anyone.

  75. Un na naai

    Freddie

Yeah, I’d agree with all of that. I think Maguire is as good as almost anyone as a cb though lacks the athleticism of vvd

He reads the game excellently and is calm and composed on the ball.
£65m for him was fair. £80 is taking the piss.

Was imperious for us at the World Cup last year sandwiched between some quality seasons for lower sides.

He’s better than stones for me.

  76. Marko

We would’ve heard of a concrete link by now, and it usually takes a few days to get things over the line

Upamecano has been linked with us since before the Europa League final Honigstein and ESPN were reporting how he was our target prior to missing out on champions league football. The interest and links have been there

  77. Graham62

If we cannot rectify our existing defensive set up, before the transfer window closes, I can guarantee that fans are going to get their money’s worth watching Arsenal this season.

I hope Leno and Martinez are eating their shredded wheat for breakfast.

  78. Spanishdave

Emery simply will not drop Xakha that’s a real problem.
    He won’t discipline Mustafi.
He struggles to play younger players.
He constantly changes the formation .
    He hasn’t got a clue.

  79. Paulinho

Marko – I don’t count any of the current links to him seriously. All just fluff.

We need someone like Ornstein to come out tonight and say we are in negotiations to actually have a hope of signing him before Thursday.

  80. DigitalBob

very harsh spanishdave, I think Mustafi has effectively been dropped and the club have tried to get rid but no one stupid enough “yet” to fall for the foul bait that is Shkodran Mustafi.

The Xhaka loyalty stuff must be because he ticks all the boxes for a vocal hard as nails captain except he’s a woeful premier league midfielder- mostly. I’m hoping he’s shown the bench and then the door within the next six months.

  81. Spanishdave

Bob Emery is not tough enough. The Premiership demands managers who are more focused towards wining.
Pep or Klopp would not get into this position.

  82. Freddie Ljungberg

    Samesong

We could always offer them the same amount and throw in Mustafi on top, and give them ESR on loan to ease the pain.

  83. Batistuta

Absolutely vital we get in a defender before Thursday or is it Friday… Can’t go as is again as that would just be dereliction of duty from the club. Would be on course again to concede more goals than the last 2 seasons and that would not be enough, we can score goals, we just need to stop them going in the other end and as we’ve seen with the lot we’ve got, that’s not going to happen.

Don’t think anyone asking for better defenders at this stage is whinning for the sake of it, our defence is an utter embarrassment

  84. CG

Big Jack Charlton – the doyen of British Stoppers often stated- he never learnt The Art of defending until he turned 30.

Spending astronomical money on all these young unproven ‘puppy’ centre half from overseas leagues is utterly insane.

Just think the Greek Lad – everybody was raving about last season ( the one who had a storming game at OT).

    Whats happened to him?

Folk- (rightly) lambast the excessive fee for Maguire.

but at least Man Utd will get a defender who knows the league- and will probably help get them 6 years consecutive CL soccer.

We need one minimum proven centre half before Deadline Day – or we are finishing 7th!

    And ill take all bets

    T.T.

  85. Spanishdave

Forget clean sheets this year , it ain’t gonna happen
Leno will be getting back ache picking the ball out of the net!
Pepe will wonder why he came.

  86. CG

Maguire will score Man Utd 6 -8 goals a season for Man Utd

He is virtually unbeatable from set pieces.

I have already bought him to score on his debut!

  87. Leftsidesanch

CG as I said before I want a bet on all of the madness you’ve said.

This season: Spurs winning title, Everton top 4, Arsenal 8th. Liverpool 5th

Medium term: Arsenal to get relegated

    Lets have it

  88. CG

    Graham

    “””Hold it!

Didn’t you recently state we were going to get relegated?”””””

(we will be relegated within 5 years- if the structure of the club don’t change)”””

(We are due a relegation- its been a while.
    simple mathematics and probability)

everybody else has been relegated- has to be our turn soon.
And it could be just what the doctor ordered

Bit like The footballing equivalent of colonic irrigation *

    *recommend it highly, personally

  89. CG

    Marko

“””Maguire will score Man Utd 6 -8 goals a season for Man UtdDon’t take this personally but I hate you””””

I hope he dont hit double figures then!

Bati, I try. I’ve never come across someone I’ve never met who I would sincerely like to uppercut as much as this CG. Biggest cunt you can find.

  91. Gentlebris

If we have indeed sent in €60m for a young CB, that shows we are not only trying to get CL but we are actually planning to compete there once we get back.

    Wenger must be sobbing now:
    ‘Arsenal have gone crazy!’

    Hey CG!

Your nurse didn’t turn up today?

  92. Marko

Bati, I try. I’ve never come across someone I’ve never met who I would sincerely like to uppercut as much as this CG. Biggest cunt you can find.

Pretty much. Like I’ll generally ignore him but once in a while I feel like it’s important to tell him how much I hate his guts

  93. CG

I have not the foggiest- why the good folk on here get so annoyed, exasperated – because I have forthright opinions ( mostly accurate ones- i hasten to add)

Its not my fault we have Emery and Raul in charge!

  94. chris

Give it some time, I am sure we have all been irritated by CG but then after a while you just have to laugh at how much of a lunatic he is. Just a pure comedy character.

  95. chris

I always make an effort to watch more Championship footy each season, but will be making more effort this time. Still think pound for pound it is one of the most competitive leagues in world football with a true ‘any given Saturday’ vibe going on.

  96. CG

    Carts

“””I would’ve taken Cahill on an 1-2 year deal.Is what it is..”””

I would not have wanted him in May or June

I would certainly have taken him in August

Dunk and Cahill – both man mountains, both leaders, both experienced in the prem- would have been an exceptional partnership for us ( until Holding is ready)

mark my words- these idiots in charge – are already rushing Holding back- I guarantee he has an injury set back!

  97. Valentin

I know it is against the grain, but I would rather we went after another French U21 CB Evan N’Dicka. He currently play for Frankfurt. One bonus is that he is left footed and can also play left back.

  98. Gentlebris

‘everybody else has been relegated- has to be our turn soon.
And it could be just what the doctor ordered’

You are a great guy CG.

Marko hates you but I don’t.

  99. Carts

    Freddie L

    What’s hard to believe, ffs.

Yes I am whinging. And I’ll continue to bemoan the fact that our scouting is inept for as long as I support this dysfunctional club.

You’re making out as if there aren’t any legit points to criticise going for Upamecano for 60m, when I’ve just highlighted (not for the first time) that we have very little ability to identify CB (& defences).

We’re literally either end of the spectrum when it comes to singing defensive players: whether we spend £1m-£4m on Holding or Mavropanos; or whether we spend £30m on Mustafi. Or sell Bielik without giving him a fair crack; or releasing Pleguezelo for the same reason.

Frankly, our scouts are fucking useless.

  100. Valentin

    Thanks.

So no Jim White excited late at night!
He may have to delay his act for the closure of TW of lower league English clubs.
