I can’t say I was expecting to come away from the Barcelona game with a win, so there’s no point in throwing my kale puffs at the laptop. It’s preseason, Emery appears to still be feeling out his starting 11, nothing matters until the Newcastle game.

We had a fairly positive first half. We took the lead from the usual suspect… Auba. He received a ball from Mesut and unleashed a devastating strike past the Barca second choice keeper. It really was a brutal strike from a man who looks at the absolute peak of his physical and technical powers.

There was a notable performance from Willock. He didn’t let the game overawe him. He works hard, he shows great composure for a 19-year-old and his ability to read play and turn the ball over fast is going to be a big asset moving into the new season. That goal-line clearance he made really was spectacular, absolutely ace concentration.

The same problems were still there, hanging around like those greasy pigeons that eat the Chinese food at the Camden stables. The issues are now so familiar my heart doesn’t skip a beat. We looked confused in defence, particularly in the second half. It doesn’t matter how you chop it up, AMN is not a right back, Chambers is never going to make it, and Mustafi will always, always let players get in behind him. I’m also not sure about our continued attempts to play out the back from way deep, especially when we’re relying on slow players that make lots of mistakes to move the ball forward.

We also have the same old issues up top. Mikhi has been a disaster signing. He’s lost the pace that stood him out, and now he looks like he’s lost interest. He gives the ball away far too often and he’s painfully casual about being average.

The kids are showing promise, but most of them are greener than a bowl of salad. The pace on offer gives us a different dimension. There are flashed is excellence. I just struggle to see Emery giving them a chance in such a high-pressure season. Martinelli, Saka and Reiss all look like they need another loan… but given the choice, I think I’d rather see them in our starting 11 over Iwobi or Mikhi.

The transfer gossip post-match is centred around Umtiti and Tierney. Both are better than what we have. Both were very robust players until last season. Both represent a huge risk. Raul is in a tough spot, his contacts game has its limits, he didn’t have a chief scout for 7 months, and now he’s backed into a corner. If he blows money on them and they’re good for 40 games, we have a very strong chance of Champions League. If things go wrong, on the basis of what we’ve seen in preseason, we really could be in for a bit of a nightmare defensively.

Still, quite exciting, wouldn’t you say? In January we were all shitting our pants that this summer was going to be about #AnnouncePerisic and #WelcomeEverBanega. I’d take your shoe over those two.

Let’s see if Raul can make some magic happen before Sunday!

Im 90% sure Willock is starting against Newcastle.
He’s earned it . If anything he might have already usurped matty g in the pecking order.

  2. peanuts&monkeys

Sell Xhaka. Sell Mikhi. Sell Mustafi. Loan Nketiah.

    Buy a CB.

that Xhaka is an unsold rubbish pulling his weight on the pitch, is beyond anyone’s doubt. Xhaka is another of Wenger’s sins.

  3. Cesc Appeal

Yeah I’m not one who watches youngsters in pre-season and goes over the top with their ability or thinks they should start but Willock can be legitimately pissed off if he doesn’t start against Newcastle.

We’re not talking Nelson, Saka, Martinelli etc here who had some good moments but you can tell they still look their ages and need to be handled carefully. Willock was one of the best performers, maybe the best performer, over pre-season and played his role with the type of confidence and maturity you don’t see often from a 19 year old player.

  4. Moray

@ Cesc. Leno makes sense. We need a captain for more than a season and Sok might be out of the first XI next season on ability.

Having said that, if we could buy in a leader next summer then Sok would be the best choice this year with Leno Vice Cap.

  5. Cesc Appeal

    Wasi

I’ve cut Emery a lot of slack but I simply would not be able to understand that one. Even with inexperienced young players the difference in the side with genuine wingers is obvious.

If we go for a safe line up that has Xhaka, Willock, Ozil, Mkhitaryan all in it then Emery cannot be shocked by a slow, lethargic performance. Especially with no full backs.

No width, no pace, no change from last year.

  6. Wasi

Laca over Leno and sok for captain. Is younger than sokratis and more of a leader than Leno . Not to mention he is our best player. Only Pepe and auba can challenge for the title now unless Ozil actually turns up in London or Bellerin goes Kimmich mode this season.

    “RH

Matteo got a lot of undeserved game time as last season progressed, he started very well but got figured out pretty quickly and it all went downhill from there. Being thrown into games he had no hope influencing did not help

  8. Wasi

    CA
    Im just stating facts
If it were up to me id have sent mykhi to the reserves by now. Just to force him out of the club. He is as big a liability as Mustafi imo.

  9. Leftsidesanch

It’s all on Emery, if he rolls into much of this season utilising the same players that have consistently let him and us down then he will find himself looking for a new club in the summer.

  10. Moray

If Emery disrespects the captaincy as much as he seemed to suggest last season then why not make it a joke entirely? Give the armband out on a rotating basis or give it to somebody like Corporal Jenkinson or even better Ceballos. How would they like them onions….

  11. Chika

“More to do with budget issues, poor planning, inability to move certain players on and the delusion Kos has one more season in him.”

Exactly my thoughts. Which was why I said Emery must be taking the piss by suggesting the lack of movement in defence is due to the unavailability of players that’d improve us.

  12. Marko

Just had to check out the Everton squad there to see what has people thinking that they’ve turned a corner and same defence and added Kean to attack and a couple DM’s in midfield. Yeah I wouldn’t worry too much honestly they look better in midfield but in defence and attack they’re still Everton

  13. Wasi

    RH
Currently we have only 2 fully fit CM. Willock and Xhaka. LT has no chance if starting as he just returned to training. Same can be said about Elneny who is already behind willock. Matty G is not fully fit nor is Ceballos. And Willock has looked good against the likes Madrid, Bayern and Barca. Who’s to say he cant do it against Newcastle.

  14. Moray

Has anyone actually tried to work out what happened to Mhiki? He seems to have lost all interest and passion in the game. There must be a reason

  15. fsaf

Doucoure is great. I’m a fan.

Laca shouldn’t be a captain. Captain should be someone that has a guaranteed starting place if healthy in the lineup. Leno is that guy. But from a seniority point of view, Xhaka has been here for a while. And he’s guaranteed to start a lot of our games. As much as I don’t like him, he’s the obvious choice. I would still want him sold next season though. Leno is a great shout and the best candidate imo. But not the obvious choice.

  16. Cesc Appeal

Being captain isn’t about being the best player, Henderson is captain at Liverpool.

A captain should have some leadership qualities, some intimidation factor, he shouldn’t be afraid to let his teammates have it.

When you watch Lacazette in training etc, very good player, hard worker most of the time, but no way is he captain material.

The same thing with this weird Bellerin as captain talk. No way.

The armband has lost all meaning at Arsenal over the last 6 years, it needs to be restored.

Unfortunately out options are not great.

  17. HighburyLegend

“Has anyone actually tried to work out what happened to Mhiki? He seems to have lost all interest and passion in the game. ”

    He has been Ozilirezed.

  18. Danny

Now imagine next season a team without Ozil
    ————————–
His contract runs till the end of summer 2021.
As somebody once wrote, he’ll still be here after Emery leaves.

  19. Wasi

    Marko
They have a strong midfield and their new signing can also play in defense. I remember us being linked to him when Sven was in charge. Their defense is better than ours. Their midfield is just as good as ours (if docoure signs).

  20. kamp

    Good point made above.
Every opposing team will simply target ANM until he lets them score/does it for them/gets himself sent off.

Your defence is only as strong as it’s weakest point…
Alves or Lemina are both within our grasp

  21. Receding Hairline

“Has anyone actually tried to work out what happened to Mhiki? He seems to have lost all interest and passion in the game. There must be a reason”

A bank balance beyond his wildest dreams perhaps?? He already has the beginnings of a pot belly!!!

    @Wasi

yes Willock should start the first game of the season, he has earned it. And if he does well he should only lose his place based on form

  22. Emiratesstroller

I think that Arsenal will only offload one or two more players.

Koscielny is almost certainly leaving. The only issue is whether Arsenal secure a transfer fee.

The second most likely player to be offloaded is I suspect Elneny assuming that we can get a fee of £8-12 million for him. He secured very little game time last season and we have a replacement in Willock.

Of course everyone has a different opinion about others whom we would want
    to shift out of club.

My personal preferences in order of choice are:
    1. MKHITARYAN. He has been fairly ineffective in second half of last season and in pre season games. He is an expensive bench player.
2.MUSTAFI but obviously only if we can find a decent CB replacement.

  23. Wasi

How can you guys think Leno is a better cap material than Laca. The only thing he has above Laca is a guaranteed starting spot. I have not yet seen him communicate with our CB’s in the way Alisson or Lloris does. We conceded an OG yesterday thanks to the complacency of AMN and Leno was quite as a kite. (lOl). On the other hand Laca is well respected and loved in the squad. Interacts with the Players and the fans on the pitch and off it. Plays with his heart on his sleeve .
We dont have Any1 like Henderson to give the armband to. We dont have 1 personality like that in the dressing room . Kos and Cech was the closest i think.

  24. fsaf

    RH,
Cesc is/was quiet as well. His position on the pitch allowed him to lead by example, but Leno could be a very important player in our club. For years. To each his own though.

  25. Leftsidesanch

It’s funny hows Kos is referred to as some sort of leader. The same guy crying in the dressing room because his youngster asked him why Arsenal are so inept.

  26. Graham62

In my opinion, Mhiki never wanted to come to Arsenal.

    He has never felt wanted.

    He is disinterested.

He also works in the “Ozilirized” environment, which doesn’t help matters.

  27. Receding Hairline

Niklas Stark from Hertha Berlin is a name randomly thrown up on twitter this morning.
Apparently he,Boubacar Kamara and Rugani are on our shortlist. Deal for Tierney to be concluded soon although he is not expected to play till November

  28. Chika

You can really sense the trepidation among the fans, there’s no room for stupid errors, wrong tactics, blind spots etc.

We absolutely need to qualify for UCL this season. Wolves and Everton are becoming more formidable.

  29. Leftsidesanch

Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici is making his way to London today for negotiations for Rugani apparently.

  30. Chika

“Deal for Tierney to be concluded soon although he is not expected to play till November.”

Honestly, I don’t get this fixation with Tierney.

  31. HighburyLegend

“He also works in the “Ozilirized” environment, which doesn’t help matters.”
    @Graham : you’re welcome.

  32. Receding Hairline

“Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici is making his way to London today for negotiations for Rugani apparently.”

Is Rugani really suited to the premier league?? I find it unsettling Juventus are not willing to settle for a loan and option to buy deal

  33. Leftsidesanch

Wolves are no longer a surprise package, teams will treat them with a degree of respect and will know what to expect when they come up against them. It’s also uncertain how they will fare juggling Prem games alongside the EL.

I’ve mentioned before, my dark horse this year would be West Ham. They’ve not been talked about much and are quietly building a decent side with less of the fanfare that now seems to follow Leicester, Everton and Wolves. In saying all this though, none of these sides have displayed the consistency across a campaign required to break into the top 6.

  34. Leftsidesanch

‘Is Rugani really suited to the premier league?? I find it unsettling Juventus are not willing to settle for a loan and option to buy deal’

RH, I’ve seen on twitter than it would be a loan deal with the option of purchase.

  35. Gentlebris

    Calm down people.
Neither side played a proper team, it was all experiments.

Chambers did okay. AMN is not a RB.
Our defence needs some sorting. But fuck it, did you see Nelson, Martinelli, Willock and Saka? We should be happy about those great kids, not crying over a well known Mustafi.

Holding is already getting under 23 minutes, he should be ready for Liverpool. Holding and Papa with Chambers as back up is not such a nasty arrangement, and I figure one CB still incoming.

And we have no business with Tierney, Saka can play LB, let him backup Monreal/Kola. Spend Tierney’s money on a CB.

And Ozil seems to be getting back, two beautiful passes yesterday but one led to our only goal.
    Ceballos is a baller.
    Xhaka is still shit.

More good news than bad news so cheer up and let’s go destroy Castle!

  36. Chika

Is Rugani the sort of top quality Emery was alluding to?

Are we about to undo the impressive signings we’ve made?

  37. Receding Hairline

French pundit Pierre Menes has branded Arsenal’s transfer policy as “incomprehensible” after their swoop for Nicolas Pepe.
He explained: “Now for the Gunners … When you have already (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang and (Alexandre) Lacazette, go spend 80 potatoes on one attacker more, when you see the summer this defence, it’s still quite incomprehensible. I’m not sure that, for the Gunners, the priority was the recruitment of Nicolas Pépé.

“Now we come back a little bit when PSG took (Kylian) Mbappé after Neymar, there are opportunities on some players that you have to know not to miss, and that’s what happened with Pepe.”

Everyone knows we need defenders but this guy gets it with Pepe. 72m paid over 4 seasons, we would have been crazy not to do the deal

  38. Leedsgunner

You win games with a good offence. You win titles with a good defence.

Yes, with our eye catching offence we may win a string of games but because our defence is unreliable we will drop points and draw games we should have won , and lose games where we should have drawn. Over the long season we will fall away unless we shore up this defence.

I hope Holding and Chambers really step up to the because it looks like they are going to be the future defence of this club. Sokratis is a warrior but he’s too rash too often. Mustafi is just a living excuse pretending to be a footballer and as for full backs… what full backs?

  39. Marko

I have never looked at Leno and thought Leader of men Nor Lacazette for that matter

Yet both have captained Leverkusen and Lyon respectfully. I personally would give it to Leno who’s an ever present and who’s been by and large consistent since joining.

Apparently he,Boubacar Kamara and Rugani are on our shortlist

Got a link please. Umtiti isn’t happening he’s Miami bound with Barca. Rugani and Boubacar Kamara could be good

  40. Leedsgunner

Why aren’t we bidding for Ake? For Dunk? For Coady?

    Snobbery?

They are EPL proven, young and affordable.

  41. Leedsgunner

*Ok Ake is young… Coady and Dunk entering into their prime… but the point is we should be exploring the lower leagues more from where these defenders came from.

  42. Words on a Blog

    Cesc,

What’s your problem with having Bellerin as Captain?

I’d love it – his armband would be designed by Versace, and we’d have millions more fashionista and vegan fans

This transfer window has been a rollercoaster of fear and elation.

At the moment I’m fully expecting Raúl to do an amazing Mustafi for Varane swap whilst at the same time panicking that we get nobody in at CB, or worse, GoH’s favourite Gary Cahill……

  45. Gentlebris

Be sure guys, that if we get a CB now, it will be right.
The Mustafi experience must be on Raul’s mind while shopping.

  46. useroz

Arsenal still a magnet for injuries!

Looks like Dani de loan is reportedly injured… already

    Ffs

Let’s not touch the crocked celtic lb and barca cb…

Find some eastern European tough guys please

  47. Chika

“I am on record expressing my doubts on Rugani but how does his signing undo anything???????”

errm maybe we could sign a defender of better quality to place us in a better stead or what do you think????????

Are we seriously moving from Chambers and Mustafi to an average Rugani?????????

We’ve added more firepower to our attack, we’re apparently chasing a LB, why not just go a step further and secure a CB that’s CLEARLY better than what we’ve got???????

  48. Un na naai

    Hmmmmm

Vegans and fashionistas that should compliment the tattood necks and cunts that look like they only eat from Morley’s.

Can’t we just have normal fans anymore?

  49. Receding Hairline

We’ve added more firepower to our attack, we’re apparently chasing a LB, why not just go a step further and secure a CB that’s CLEARLY better than what we’ve got???????

Are you suggesting Chambers and Mustafi are better than Rugani

  50. Guns of Hackney

Injury curse. No. Bad medicine and training.

Leeds gets it. Defence wins big titles, attack wins single games. This mantra is true pretty much in every single sport in history. With maybe the exception of golden age Brazil, everything comes from the back and in all honesty, Leno (and he’s not the best) IS our best defensive player by a long way.

Emery will not be able to improve our position based on goals scored over 38 games. Too many teams are savvy to our predicable play.

Forget Pepe, a new manager should have been Arsenal’s priority. I can’t wait to see Torrier, Laca, Pepe and Auba all leaving or wanting out because Emery makes Peter Reid look innovative.

  51. CG

Everton seem to be building a very powerful and athletic squad.( note the sensible fees they are shelling out – compared to us)

They have only 38 games to navigate

Whilst we have a minimum of 16 Loosers Cup fixtures to deal with..

I’ll add them to the list:

Spurs,City,Man Utd,Chelsea, Liverpool and Now Everton that we will finish behind.

    And If Leicester get Dunk….
We might even finish below them.

    Any news on Tierney?

  52. Guns of Hackney

Tierney was seen this morning getting a Stanna stair lift installed in his house.

22 and already had both hips replaced.

  53. Leftsidesanch

Put a stake on that Little G.

It’s all good being an antagonist on here, but go on – prove you actually believe the drivel you type here.

  54. Guns of Hackney

    Leftside

Gambon thinks we’ll finish sixth too.

CG and G have a point. We were shit last year and our defence is worse this year.

Pepe will not get us 10/15 more points alone.

  55. Leftsidesanch

No surprises you side with a circus act like Little G, GOH. Troll for a troll eh?

Little G thinks we will finish minimum of 8th, he thinks Spurs will win the title. He thinks Everton will finish in the top 4, he thinks Zaha is the difference maker in the Prem. He thinks we have the worst manager in the league, he thinks that we will be relegated and end up in the championship in the next 5 years. I can’t even be bothered to recall some more of the nonsense that he’s typed.

It’s all good playing up to the boring roles created on here, but put a stake on it if your that confident.

  56. Leftsidesanch

That’s the thing with the net, it allows posters like Little G to type whatever nonsense they like because it’s free for all on here. The internet is faceless. No sane person regularly would spew the garbage that leaves his fingers. If anyone can show me they know someone like that, I’ll show you a liar.

It’s all god though because he thanks PedRo for each post, so his shelf life gets extended every post.

  57. CG

    I believe wholeheartedly:

    Spurs will win the title.

Everton can finish in the top 4( esp with Zaha on board)

We will finish about 8th ( especially if we stay in The Loosers Cup until the semifinals)

I think we will get relegated in 5 years( if we continue to allow an egotistical Spiv to run riot with your finances)

    Hardly outlandish predictions.

Pretty obvious, if you think about it.

  58. Chitom

“If anything is to be learnt from this in pre season it is game management ….If the manager gets it wrong , the team will suffer …If the manager keeps the balance of the side when making substitutions we may see the team perform for 90 minutes“

Pierre, so true and such a brilliant observation too.

I mean , if Emery does in the league what he did against Barca and subs out SIX starters in the second half , then Arsenal will be in a heap of trouble.
Mainly with the fourth official probably.

Barca did the same btw and didn’t look like scoring until usual suspects decided to gift wrap them a couple.

  61. Un na naai

I think we should go in hard for Lewis Dunk. Play him alongside holding. Saliba in next season to join chambers and papa as understudies/back up. That should do it.

My spellcheck has gone mental. Wtf

  70. Leftsidesanch

What happens if you wake up one day and decide to make sense too Little G?

    Anything can happen.

At the minute, Saliba is a prospect who has shown some promise, it is smart forward thinking to make a deal early now rather than try to pursue the player if his value has tripled. The same glorious Spurs you have down as Premiership winners this year were also interested, I suppose it’s only horrible business if it has Arsenal’s name on it.

  71. Valentin

    Receding,

Matteo got a lot of undeserved game time as last season progressed, he started very well but got figured out pretty quickly and it all went downhill from there.

I remember writing that Guendouzi has been found out and that he lacked defensive awareness.
Did you not disagreed with me?
If you did, What made you change your mind?

Genuinely interested in learning why people are now changing their mind on Guendouzi.

  72. Freddie Ljungberg

So apparently we’re still in for Rugani, if that’s the best we can do then it’s better than nothing, we have 3 more weeks to shift Kos and Mustafi after that and if it’s on the reported 2 year loan with obligation to buy it keeps most of our transfer budget intact.

I would take the Tierney money and add the cash we got for Bielik and go for Doucoure if he’s available for 35m, improves us more than getting a left back and a Torreira – Ceballos – Doucoure midfield would be tasty.

If we manage to sell off some deadwood to Europe we can always use those funds to go back in for Tierney in January, he should be fully recovered by then.

  73. CG

The Saliba deal ONLY makes sense if you get the player now.

What about if the next manager dont fancy him? ( dont like his attitude)

What about if he gets a Hernia or a serious injury?
What about he thinks he has made the big time – and slacks off?
What about if he fails a drug test?

    What about a loss of form/motivation ?

    Too many ponderables.

Lots of 18 year olds look promising and dont turn out to be as good as you think….

    Phil Jones
    Smalling
    Stones

No one no knows if he is any good.
Because he only played 18 games in France.

  74. Marko

Genuinely interested in learning why people are now changing their mind on Guendouzi.

Cause he’s french as opposed to English. Oh and our fanbase has its fair share of idiots

  75. Receding Hairline

If you ain’t spoiling for an argument as usual, you’d notice I explicitly implied we’d be better served signing a defender that’s CLEARLY better than what we currently have.

Besides, you also expressed your doubts over Rugani and I remember when you mentioned being better than Elneny doesn’t count for much. Shouldn’t the same logic be applied regarding Chambers and Mustafi??????????

Find another poster for your dose of squabble.

    Receding,

I may be wrong about that.
I am curious because at the time, I was pretty much in the minority with my criticism of him.
I thought that the flaws in his game meant that he was unsuited to play in the EPL especially as a deep laying midfield.

Has your opinion of Willock changed?
I hope that now you see why I was championing him as a better player than Elneny or as Ramsey’s understudy.

He has the defensive awareness that is lacking in so much of our midfield players.
He may not have the technical finesse and passing range of Xhaka, but his overall play especially defensively is better.

  80. Receding Hairline

The use of the word clearly is subjective Chika

If he has been targeted, despite my reservations, then whoever is targeting him believes he is clearly better than what we have.

Seems the simple question is Rugani better than Chambers and Mustafi ticked you off for some reason…where is the call for an argument there??

You still haven’t answered how one bad signing undoes a whole summer either, rather you went off on the “receding like an argument” wonderland. Whatever though

  81. James.wood

Another defensive problem I envisage is Leno getting injured.
Martinez looking at his stats has been with us since 2015 and
on loan for various periods not Premier quality me thinks and with the Goon show in front of him well more fun and games look likely.
Macey-our 3rd string has not had a Premier game.

Liverpool have just signed the West Ham keeper Adrian on a free.?

  82. CG

If Arsenal had anyone with an ounce of footballing nous in charge.

And snare Dunk and Cahill in the next few days.
We might actually see some progress.

  83. DigitalBob

Rugani is an instant upgrade over the dross currently taking up wages and a squad number we have at the back. If the deal is legit Raul needs to press ahead with this as I have no faith in Mustafi or Kos and little faith in Chambers to fill the void.

By the way, Holding isn’t exactly a world beater but a solid centreback with room for growth, he’s on the path but far from the finished article.

  84. Receding Hairline

Valentine i don’t know about technical finesse when it comes to Xhaka, any footballer that panics under pressure isn’t technically anything in my opinion, he does have a range of passing that comes in handy but so does the much maligned Elneny in my opinion so that shouldn’t really count for much.

Willock may be a good replacement for Ramsey, time will tell. Although in my view you are going a bit over the top on Guendouzi, kid has raw materials to be a star in the making, again he is just 19. You will also see the flaws in Willock’s game if he plays as much as Guendouzi did last season.

  85. Valentin

I am astonished that May Macey is our third goalkeeper.
This a player who struggled on a non-league loan.
Bar the fact that he is a home grown player, I cannot understand why he is still at Arsenal.

  86. Marko

Manchester Utd have signed 3 British players over one summer (June-August) for the first time since 1989

    Only cost 145 million. Only

  87. DigitalBob

“Manchester Utd have signed 3 British players over one summer (June-August) for the first time since 1989

    Only cost 145 million. Only”

The first two I think are good deals, bargains considering this inflated market, Maguire for £80-85 million is a mess. A true Woodward special

  88. Thomas

    Mustafi
    Xhaka
    Elneny
    Chambers
    Mkhitaryan
    Iwobi
    Kolasinac
    Monreal
    Ozil
    Maitland-Niles
    Jenkinson
    Koscielny
    Martinez

Ridiculous how much garbage there is left in the squad. Not a single one have been cleared out. The only players sold have been Ospina, Bielik and Asano and all of them were out on loan last season.

  89. Graham62

Liverpool will win it this season, with MC a close second.

Spuds will, at best, finish third; with Chelsea/ MU/ ourselves/ Leicester/ Everton and maybe even Wolves, scrapping it out for 4th-9th.

Spuds will not win the league.

    Guarantee it.

  90. Valentin

    Receding,

Guendouzi’s flaw were visible last year. And they were still visible at the U21 tournament and during the pre-season. I don’t think that he will ever iron them out.

On the other hand, Willock’s flaw at U21 were obvious. A few seasons ago he was easily brushed off the ball. Two summers ago he obviously spend time in the gym to build up his upper body strength. Since without being the new Hulk, he is not so easily dispossessed.

To me that means that he thought about his weaknesses (or at least somebody pointed them to him) and spent time correcting them. I have not seen anything showing that Guendouzi has worked on his weaknesses.

  91. Cesc Appeal

    WOAB

To borrow a line from Jay Z, doesn’t look like he could bust a grape in a fruit fight.

Bellerin as captain would say a lot about Arsenal, a player half interested in football who is quite soft. No thanks.

I think just as with Holding, Bellerin is being built up during his injury to the stature of a player he just never was.

Not saying they are bad but we saw a similar thing with Wilshere, when players are injured and we have issues in the squad the injured players are built up to be something they are not.

He’s not a leader, he’s not someone with a presence and he’s not a lead by example on the field type player in the way Fabregas and RVP were.

  92. Biggles

I think it’s time we started a Benzema to Arsenal rumour, we’ve not had one yet this transfer window. It feels kind of odd to not have it either.

  93. Marko

They’ll be looking at upgrading old slab head in a year.

With United out of the picture it really does look like a perfect time to try for Dias

  94. DigitalBob

Receding , just in terms of fullbacks over the last few years, hes good defensively with room to grow. I don’t think its a massive overpay.

Maguire on the other hand is just silly, even in this bloated market.

  95. Receding Hairline

“I have not seen anything showing that Guendouzi has worked on his weaknesses.”

Valentine Guendouzi is 19. I get it, you love Willock, but come on!!!!! You make it sound like Guendouzi is done in football and might as well retire

  96. Receding Hairline

“Maguire on the other hand is just silly, even in this bloated market.”

DigitalBob Maguire’s head alone should be worth a few millions, no one is going for a header against that. You have to also factor in Hull get 9.5m from the deal, the whole market has gone crazy though.

  97. Valentin

Here are my predictions for the season.
    ManCity will win the premiership.
Liverpool will finish second, but not as close as last season.
Spurs will finished 3rd, and again could have a good run in the Champion’s League.
Chelsea will start like a house on fire, but things will turn sour, especially if Giroud gets injured.
ManUtd will plod along without looking making any headway.
Arsenal will go on some great run, but then collapse under the deficiencies of the defense.
Everton and WestHam will be the surprise packages, running top 6 much closer than anticipated.
Leicester will flatter to deceive. Some great games, but too inconsistent.
Watford and Wolves will disappoint after their great year. Tactically they will be find out. Clubs will now know how to play them.

  98. Marko

Just before Guendouzi gets put into that category of players like Iwobi and Xhaka and the like never to escape over the top criticism but it’s worth pointing out that we bought him for 7 million and even with all the obvious limitations and improvements needed we could sell him tomorrow and make a massive profit on him he’s that highly thought of. So I’d go easy on any sort of proclamation on the lad just yet.

  99. Marko

    Some predictions that.

Hey Mark here from Ireland I predict at some point this week you’ll see rain and expect potatoes to be eaten presumably for dinner.

  100. WengerEagle

Nobody else get Wenger vibes off of Emery ‘s post match comments on transfers in this week?,

I mean fuck sake Unai, just about anybody would be an improvement on our defensive options right now.

  101. Valentin

    Receding,

Guendouzi is weak defensively. Every time he is put under pressure, he caught up the ball and expect a non-existent foul to be signalled by the referee. Against Barcelona he made the same exact mistake giving away an opportunity away.

Guendouzi is starting to look like the teacher’s pet. A lot of our academy players were better than him but were not given the same opportunity nor game time.
I would have taken Willock, Bielik and Amaechi above Guendouzi. I am pretty sure that the last two both decision to leave is partly based on the difference between his treatment and theirs treatment.

  102. fsaf

    Marko,
Yeah but on another note, there would be teams splashing 20-30m pounds on either of Iwobi and Nelson. Doesn’t mean they are the complete package.

I like Guen a lot though. He’s got a big future for us. I expect much more coming from him this season.

  103. fsaf

    Marko,
Thought the same but he did put them in a specific order one after another which would indicate their final position in the table imo.

  104. DigitalBob

Receding this is true, Maguires head gives me a “constantly bandaged” feeling.

Guendozi is not that bad guys, and Willock is not that good. Both deserve game time but should not be starting if we want a top 4 finish. As it stands the lightweight but technically intelligent midfield of Torreira and Ceballos should be first choice.

Yes its wafer like but its a proper footballing 1-2 in the middle. Xhaka is and will always be a liability on the pitch.

  105. Valentin

    Fsaf,

No I don’t think that Arsenal will finish 5th.
We will finish a distant 6th.
I predict that we will miss the ECL even if as expected ManCity is banned from European competition for a year.

  106. Marko

Rap he’s 20 years of age I ain’t expecting much from him this season much like last other than incremental improvements. He’s still learning

  107. Cesc Appeal

Not the most reliable source, but at this point with Arsenal in Rugani talks as well I’m just going to go along with it.

Not totally implausible if they will accept installments and we get money for Mustafi and Kozz along with the Bielik and Asano fee.

  108. DigitalBob

Out of all our youngsters Eddie and Saka need to go out on loan to get the minutes they need to grow. If Maveropano’s could stay fit he’s another one that needs gametime at another prem club for a year.

  109. Marko

We will finish a distant 6th.
I predict that we will miss the ECL even if as expected ManCity is banned from European competition for a year.

You are some piece of work

  110. Marko

CA I don’t think Bild are reliable and frankly I couldn’t see Leipzig turning down an offer like that. Hopefully there’s actually discussions and they jumped the gun a bit

  111. Leftsidesanch

‘Nobody else get Wenger vibes off of Emery ‘s post match comments on transfers in this week?’

Yes, I almost heard it in Wenger’s voice. I

  112. Cesc Appeal

    Marko

If I’m Leipzig and I’ve seen just seen slabhead go for £85 Million I might reject £60 Million.

Again though, just playing along with the story, it could be an issue of installments and add ons not the price as with Celtic.

  113. Receding Hairline

“Guendouzi is starting to look like the teacher’s pet. A lot of our academy players were better than him but were not given the same opportunity nor game time.”

    Oh there it is…

“I am pretty sure that the last two both decision to leave is partly based on the difference between his treatment and theirs treatment.”

    Was it Valentine???

Correct me if i am wrong but weren’t you the one who said Sven left because he wanted the academy players used instead Suarez was brought in??

Yet one of the players Sven has been hailed for bringing in is making our academy “superstars” leave?? Thought Sven was a champion of the academy, why bring in a player you deem clearly inferior to Willock, Amaechi and Bielik???

Again i guarantee you though if Guendouzi does move today he will have better suitors than Hamburg and Derby

  114. fsaf

    Marko,
Emery has a puzzle ahead of him. I remember Wenger was doing an pretty decent job with the team when a lot of his players were injured. The moment he had a full team, he wouldn’t know what to do with so many players.

In that regard fitting all 3 of Pepe, Auba and Laca, then you have ppl like Mikki, Ozil that expect to play a lot and Iwobi will not be happy to be benched by Martinelli, Nelson or Saka either. You have Ceballos, Xhaka, Torreira, Guendouzi, Willock in midfield.

It’s quite complicated picking 11 that would work well out of this bunch.

  115. WengerEagle

Im not Slab head’s biggest fan but he starred for a World Cup Semi Finalist at the back and put in a very good season at Leicester there, English premium and all that shite too.

They overpaid but not by a tonne, 60m figure would have been a fair price imo.

  116. Receding Hairline

“We will finish a distant 6th.
I predict that we will miss the ECL even if as expected ManCity is banned from European competition for a year.”

Thank you for your interest in our affairs

What is it about AFC that excites you Valentin besides the youth of course

Pepe signed you were practically fuming

Auba stays no…..you want him at United

Now you are predicting your team which narrowly missed out on third last season will finish a distant sixth and that Chelsea will fly with Giroud (lol).
