Nicolas Pépé – Biggest signing of the decade

by .

Arsenal’s summer is well and truly rocking.

Nicolas Pepe finally landed on the .com. It has to be the most shocking signing since we landed Dennis Bergkamp. Out-fucking-rageous.

How the hell did Raul pull that move off? The player reckons he had the choice of Liverpool, United, Bayern and Arsenal.

Sure, some of that might have been related to moving up north or having to live in Munich — whatever it was that tipped him our way, it’s an immense achievement and a HUGE signal of intent for the upcoming season.

Things I love about this move:

He’s just turned 24 years old. We have him on the upward trajectory. He was the best-attacking force in Ligue 1 outside the PSG collective. This is basically us signing Eden Hazard of 2019.

Raul has tough financial restrictions to deal with, instead of mincing around pleading poverty and crying about how life is so fucking tough at a rich club, he’s gotten creative. We’ve structured a deal that works for us and a competitor and the transition seems to have been fairly smooth.

We’re now engaging with super agents and family members. I think this is one of those things you’d rather not know the true details of… but the reality of football is it’s a murky business, now we have a character willing to do whatever to get a deal over the line. If we had that sort of attitude on the pitch, maybe we’d be in the CL. Also worth noting that if we’d had that sort of mindset a few years ago, we’d have Mbappe in our starting 11.

This is a big boy signing. I think many people feared we were sliding down the pecking order for the type of player we could sign. We’ve landed two hugely exciting young players, we have an elite number 8 in Ceballos, a wow winger and I think there’s every indication we might bring in Tierney and a centre back.

This is a reminder to the naysayers… we are still an elite club, and a rebirth under the right leadership is possible. Think about that when you’re wondering whether a proper manager would ever consider joining us: short answer, yes.

So far, it’s been a great summer. Even wilder if we move on Mustafi.

It’s hard to fathom where this season is going to take us.

I love the new players, but the cold hard reality is that we haven’t moved the defence along and the new attacking bodies we have aren’t bedded in. Our opening month is going to be tough. I think once the stardust has settled, we might be in for a bit of a shock. Better attacking players make us harder to box in, but they don’t stop Xhaka kicking himself in the face, and they won’t stop the heart-attack that is our backline.

One problem at a time… for now, let’s just bask in the glory of a much better summer than we’d hoped for.

Let’s also laugh at the Spurs players treating a preseason trophy win like a real trophy.

Let’s also laugh at Dybala being lukewarm to the idea of going to play under Ole Gunnar Car-crash.

They’re having the summer we thought we were having… so amusing. x

Zaha outshone Pepe at the Afcon. Let’s hope Pepe perform better with the set of players at Arsenal.

CG I obviously cannot agree with you on more or less everything you have said. You are categorically stating we will not CL football within 2 seasons which you don’t know unless you have a crystal ball. Even if we did fail to qualify, do you honestly believe the club would jeopardise it’s entire future based on that? Past history shows the club in a cautious light in terms of finances. You will be disappointed if you believe Emery will be sacked in the coming months. I would love to hear your reasoning behind your belief signing Pepe makes us… Read more »

Nic Pepe,

I cannot find the Giroudheader and Kosheader of current Arsenal squad.

By your definition if we were only to buy proven PL players our options would be extremely limited.

There are countless players who have come here from all over the world with no prior PL experience and have set the league alight.

The defence remains the main concern. Both Wenger and now Emery seem to have a blind spot in solving our deficiencies in this department. I find it incomprehensible that Emery would prefer to keep Koscielny this season. The player is a busted flush just like Mertesacker was in his final playing season at club. We don’t need to have a player on our books costing £100K pw who is no longer able to play at the top level. It is complete nonsense and I suspect that Koscielny himself understands it very well. The player can go back to France where… Read more »

Chris 3 It only takes 2 mins on you tube to see- pepe has just as many flaws in his games as his strengths. Defensively he is easy to read – coming in from the right – onto his left. Better defenders here than that soggy lot in the French league – will pick him- and we will lose possession constantly. He is under pressure to perform from the beginning because of that obscene high price tag- and will lose the ball ( I am predicting) frequently because of trying too hard. Like Sanchez at Man Utd. ********* Leicester City… Read more »

Read that we should temper our expectations.

Our expectations should be to finish in the top 4 or/and to win Europa League or FAC. We cannot win the EPL with this squad, that’s a certain.

In Wenger’s last season we finished with 63 points, last season we finished with 70 points which means that we made a progress of 7 points. If we manage to add another 7 this year and end very, very close to the 80 point mark, it would be a very solid season. That’s my expectation and hope.

tony

Just want the season to start now and to see if Emery has acquired any of the sauce Pedro talks about.

Maybe Emery is just an empty condiment guy who will be gone by January.

The reality is that Arsenal cannot afford Zaha. Crystal Palace want £80 Million
with the bulk of the money paid up front.

Pepe who is rated a “more valuable” player could be bought on an instalment
plan.

Both players will/would have been a significant upgrade on what we have got
so there is no point arguing incessantly who is in your opinion the better player.

Hope you make it to Singapore I would imagine the lifestyle being better with good education as we looked at Singapore for our daughter’s uni.

Sounds like there’s a good Gooners’ club in Singapore. I almost went to watch Arsenal last pre season but family commitments prevented me from going with my son.

Also, looked at Shanghai for her, but she opted for Bangkok and Melbourne.

andy1886

Have been to Singapore several times but always on short business trips. Nice place but didn’t get to look around as much as I’d like. Have also been to Indonesia, got stuck on the main road into Jakarta from the airport for ages right next to a big billboard advertising ManU’s local tyre partner. My daughter who is in senior management decided to take a break between

Yes Jakarta is a shithole apart from the centre of town and where the business

Yes. Fucking weird. Bit like dropping Lacazette when he was clearly our best attacking player at the time or claiming you want to build your team around Ramsey and ozil then dropping them both after two games.
Or playing a high line with slow defenders. Or constantly using your full backs as your go to tactic when you have two quick and lethal strikers in your team.

Let’s see what he does this season with his new toys.

Freddie Ljungberg

Don

No, obviously Havertz (or similar) wouldn’t come in to replace Xhaka, thought that was clear.

I have no problem with having a young midfield though, miles better than having a 30 year old Ozil and 26 year old Xhaka. Torreira would also have had 2 years in the PL by then.

I would get someone like Sangare to help Torreira out defensively and let Havertz work his magic in front of them.

andy1886

Torreira has only just started training again, he isn’t going to be ready for the first game, probably not the second either. Would like to see Willock start but it will probably be Guen plus Xhaka and Ceballos if we play a midfield three. Would rather stick to a back four but whichever way you look at it we’re not going to see any defensive improvement immediately even of we close out deals today so we’re going to have to outscore our opponents. Wouldn’t be surprised either to see Mhiki start and Pepe come off the bench at Newcastle.

It’s just sour grapes from the mainstream media like TalkSport who cannot believe Arsenal has pulled off such a transfer coup.
