Positives to be had against Madrid

by & filed under News Review.

via @Arsenal Insta

Well, Arsenal didn’t disgrace themselves in a fun game against the MIGHTY Real Madrid.

We more than held our own against Zidane’s team of champions, in fact, it’s hard to say that we didn’t dominate them at times.

Unai Emery looked like he really wanted it… the scariest PE teacher this side of the Atlantic last night. It looked like he really needed to show the world, the fans, and the press that he can cut it against big teams and he wants a seat at the big boys table.

Once again, we rolled with players that really shouldn’t be anywhere near the tour, but hey, Bale landed some game time, so I guess everyone is out here shop windowing players they want to move on.

I thought there were some real positives. Firstly, we went two goals up and dominated from the start. Arsenal looked like they’d adapted to the heat more so than Madrid. We pressed well, even Ozil was getting involved in the dirty work. It is true, blondes really do have more fun.

How about Carl Jenks smashing into Marcelo? Take that you ‘I’m too good to play with Carl’ mug.

The second half was more interesting for me because we brought Saka, Eddie and Reiss into the game. They were a real menace. The pace and athleticism they gave our forward line was transformative, the shame of it was that it was meshed in with youthful bad decision making. They were all fluffing their lines like shy teenagers attempting to ask the head cheerleader to the dance.

It was a touch embarrassing to see us take the ball to the corner last minute, but at least the players are taking the preseason seriously.

Madrid won on penalties, but who cares, really?

So what have we learned…?

Things are getting desperate now. We may or may not have signed Ceballos. We’re no nearer on a powerful winger. We seem further away on a left-back than ever before. Emery is trying to promote an exciting future on the pitch, but it’s with kids, not mature stars.

The four players he thought he was landing haven’t materialised, and we’re very close to the start of the season.

I mean, I’d rather that than attempt another season with a bunch of players that are unlikely to find the next level for us… at least it’ll be exciting and committed.

We’ll see though, plenty of time until the window shuts… sort of.

See you in the comments! x

Is wan bam whatever worth £50m
    Solanke £20m
    Ings £20m

    Noooo
Welbeck is better than both those striker and a full international with an enviable goals record

Ok. I made a mistake on Bennacer. Wenger let him go. Another stupid decision. He did let Ramsey walk for free though and he let Jeff go for peanuts and now he’s worth £20m

I’ll swallow on Bennacer but not the rest
It was dog shit from the club and they are just continuing the downward trend from the tail end of wengers reign

You’re all crowing because we signed an unproven Spanish leightweighton loan

Big fucking deal. While mid table clubs are dropping dollars on proper signings you lot think you’ve struck gold with a season loan

    What mugs you are

  2. Receding Hairline

Batistuta your stand on the Chambers Cahill thing is fuzzy

If you say Chambers should be sold because he is not good enough fine

But i do not see any justification under the sun that warrants Cahill being mentioned as a name that will improve our defense from last season in 2019.

Whoever does that has ceded the right to pass judgement on Calum Chambers. My opinion.

  3. fsaf

Ceballos is the Cazorla replacement we needed since Santi’s first serious injury. Guy loves to dribble forward and will be one of the first names on the list if he adapts normally to the EPL.

  4. Unai

Tierneys heads been turned according to Lenon and Celtic are working on a contingency.

What was that about Raul being useless??

  5. Receding Hairline

“Is wan bam whatever worth £50m

It’s July 26 and free Welbeck has still not signed for a club

What makes you think he would have fetched anyone 20m in transfer fees when he is finding it tough getting a club for free??

  6. Batistuta

    Un na na

Welbeck was/ is a poor poor player hence why he’s still without a club with 2 weeks to go till the season starts

  7. Unai

“Welbeck is better than both those striker and a full international with an enviable goals record”

But has no club to speak of and no real interest other than a passing look from Newcastle?

How you get a valuation of £15m for a player with no club and no suitors is beyond me, the next level of the next level of dumb arguments.

  8. fsaf

Tierney deal should be as good as done. Imagine being a 22 yo Scot playing for Celtic and Arsenal knock on the door trusting you to basically be their starting LB for the next 5+ years if things go well. Of course his head will turn.

  9. Paul Kelly

    Smart dealings by Man U.
Stuffed us with Wellbeck and Myhkitarian…..both now worthless.
And hate to think the wages wasted on those two.

  10. Sanmi

So Ozil and Kolasinac were attacked on the street of London with knives?
You Londoners need to get a grip, vote Sadiq Khan Out and get yourself a Trump.

  11. Un na naai

    Hairline

I think we could havegot £10-£15m last summer 100%

After another injury lay off then who knows what’s going on with him.
As you said before and I quote

“When ignorant of the details it’s always better to not comment on the issue. What has Kos contract standoff with the club to do with Emery??“

  12. Guns of Hackney

    Sanmi

They should have been attacked with a tailor. The state of them! If you’re getting car jacked, at least look good.

  13. InsideRight

    Just seen this on Twitter…

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac were chased by armed thieves on mopeds. Kolasinac fought them off. Ozil would have helped him, but he was still tracking back…

  14. Paul Kelly

Anyone know what’s happening with K.Bielik?
By all accounts had a very good season at Charlton and is a Polish U 21 but I don’t think was on our pre season tour .

Another promising youngster that we invested in being allowed to depart for nout?

  15. Receding Hairline

I still expect a center back to come in …who i have no idea but i hope it’s no stop gap unless on loan.

Wolves just took Jesus Vallejo on loan from Madrid for a year, no option to buy, thought that was just for amateurs. A deal like that would have benefited us too along with Ceballos. When you are broke you get creative

  16. Freddie Ljungberg

    Don

Welbeck is a crock on a 100k a week, he doesn’t even offer the speed and finishing that made someone shell out money for Walcott, he’s just average, injury prone and overpaid.

According to the club we wanted to sell him last summer but he wanted to see out his contract and leave on a free, that’s the problem when you leave it that late.

Still waiting for that 20m transfer of Jeff though.

  17. Un na naai

    Freddy

You cleaned that shite off your top lip yet squire? Who you rimming today?

    That’s not the club’s position. That’s Raul’s position.
Emery played him at every availability until he was injured again. Why was he selected over ozil Ramsey iwobi and Mkhitaryan if he is so god awful?

    Unai
    What are you babbling about???

  18. Un na naai

So overrated yet rated highly and constantly selected by Fergie, Wenger, emery, capello, hodgeson

But you know better don’t you Freddy? Some bum licking swede on his computer knows more than this lot

  19. Freddie Ljungberg

    Don

    “That’s not the club’s position. That’s Raul’s position.
Emery played him at every availability until he was injured again. Why was he selected over ozil Ramsey iwobi and Mkhitaryan if he is so god awful?”

Leaving aside that you’re your usual cuntish self, you’re also wrong as usual.

Rauls position is the club position, did you miss that he’s our director?

He’s the only winger we had, it’s pretty fucking obvious why he was played over those players you absolute clueless dimwit.

And then he got injured again…

  20. Freddie Ljungberg

He had promise that never developed, he still hasn’t learned to finish and he’s injury prone. Hence why no one is interested now and we wanted to let him go last summer.

Honestly it’s like trying to explain abstract concepts to my 2 year old.

  21. Un na naai

He was played over ozil Mkhitaryan And iwobi

But he was our only option

    Listen to yourself Freddie

  22. Receding Hairline

I am sill waiting for why a player who was 100% certain to bring in 15-20m pounds last season is still unattached on a free with two weeks to the end of the window here in England

The fact you have not answered rather have gone off on a rant again isn’t surprising. You are an insult to toddlers, they have more decorum

  23. Freddie Ljungberg

Ozil Mikhi and Iwobi isn’t really wingers are they you idiot, neither is Iwobi but at least he can play there, was mostly played on the left though with Welbeck on the right.

Although I don’t rate him he did a job for us out there and more importantly allowed us to have one of Auba or Laca on the bench to come on against tired defenders, as soon as he got injured our late comebacks and goals dried up.

That’s not what’s being discussed though is it, I explained why he wasn’t sold last year and why no one has taken a chance on him now and you’re just flailing around gibbering nonsense as per usual.

  24. Un na naai

Honestly it’s like trying to explain abstract concepts to my 2 year old.

    Freddie

Abstract concepts like a playe who scores regularly for his national side not being worth £10-£15m

  25. Guns of Hackney

We are officially the new Newcastle United fans.

  26. Un na naai

Ozil Mikhi and Iwobi isn’t really wingers are they you idiot, neither is Iwobi but at least he can play there, was mostly played on the left though with Welbeck on the right.

    Freddie

    Hahaha
What and welbeck and Aubameyang are wingers??
    Hahahahaha
He played two strikers wide constantly because he thought they were good players.

You’ve got two £50m attacking kids who regularly play wide throughout their careers but he goes for a useless, injury probed striker who never developed or learned to shoot. Either emery is an idiot or you are

Emery saw the qualities welbeck brings. Hard work. Quick Feet. Physicality. Athleticism. Height. Power. And he chose to use them all throughout our 23 game unbeaten run until he got injured.

Hmmmm. Still wriggling aren’t you little worm?

  27. Freddie Ljungberg

    Don

“Abstract concepts like a playe who scores regularly for his national side not being worth £10-£15m”

I didn’t say anything about Welbeck was an abstract concept, go back to school, it’s pretty straight forward, he’s overpaid, and injury prone, he also didn’t want to leave last summer.

Explaining straightforward stuff like this to you is like explaining abstract concepts to my 2 year old, if she was a racist douchebag, which she isn’t btw , she’s delightful.

  28. Freddie Ljungberg

“You’ve got two £50m attacking kids who regularly play wide throughout their careers”

Who are these players and who do they play for?

Yes, Welbecks attributes are more suited on the wings than Mikhis and Ozils, so are Aubas, not ideal of course since he’s better as a striker but that’s what has to be done with no other real goal scoring threats in the team.

  29. Freddie Ljungberg

“useless, injury probed striker who never developed or learned to shoot.”

Not sure he’s been probed, you probably know more about that than me.

Is it in question that Welbeck never reached his potential? Is he a great finisher? Are you struggling and digging yourself deeper?

    No, No, yes.

  30. Freddie Ljungberg

Emery saw the qualities welbeck brings. Hard work. Quick Feet. Physicality. Athleticism. Height. Power. And he chose to use them all throughout our 23 game unbeaten run until he got injured.

Never argued against that, hence more suited to the wings than Ozil and Mikhi.

Think you’ll find the key phrase there is “until he got injured” again…

  31. Un na naai

    The two £50m attacking mids?

    Ozil and Mkhitaryan

So he has a player who he doesn’t want, can’t sell, can’t shoot, hasn’t developed, nobody wants, isn’t worth anything and chooses him every single game he’s available throughout our 23 match unbeaten streak and you claim he has no value?

    O…….k……..

  32. CG

According to the Telegraph UK Our Clown intends to play Tierney as a centre half …..
    (Something about his recovery speed….)

We shipped in 50 last season
We will ship in a minimum of 60 this season

Last season Chambers was deemed surplus to requirements now according to The Spiv he is like a new player ( and a Captain)

If Leno and our centre forwards suffer lenghty injuries…. we will be in The Championship by Easter.

And you will still have The Delinquents and Deplorables stating they are clearing up the previous Regimes mess.

    Fail to Prepare
    Prepare to Fail.

  33. China1

Welbeck is made of glass and paper

He’s not really physically imposing despite his frame because with or without contact he ends up limping out of games

Useful as a squad player or not, he’s a sicknote player straight out of the wilshere/diaby playbook. We’re right to let him go unless he’s willing to be a squad player on 30k a year or pay as you play or something

  34. Freddie Ljungberg

“So he has a player who he doesn’t want, can’t sell, can’t shoot, hasn’t developed, nobody wants, isn’t worth anything and chooses him every single game he’s available throughout our 23 match unbeaten streak and you claim he has no value?O…….k……..”

keep digging Don, think there’s still one person left who hasn’t seen what a dumbass you are yet.

  35. Unai

Un, are you slow or something?

Welbeck is going for FREE, £0.00, No Transfer Fee Atrached yet no takers, not one, not even a club
desperate to avoid religagation and take a punt.

It goes without saying he has no value if he cant even get a free transfer.

    How are you missing this?

  36. Batistuta

I’ll feel dirty after saying this but CG does have a point about that defence

We’ll be on track to ship even more, Tierney or not and not with Chambers in there too

  37. Valentin

Saka is more talented than Amaechi, but Nelson I am not so sure. Nelson has a tendency to drift in and out of game.
Regarding Martinelli he seems more physically ready to step up than the others, only long term will say that he has the technique, vision and brain to succeed.

Regarding the academy, it has been mismanaged for years. Per is trying to solve two problems at the same time.

The first is Trying to find realistic path to the first team for the current crop of talents and the next. That starts with better loan agreement and supervisions. Better contract management should also apply to youth team players. All that new approach can only works if the current headcoach has the integration of young players in his remit and know he will be judged also on that. Otherwise he has no incentive of taking the risk. Raul woke up to the issue too late. And now we are likely to lose Amaechi and Bielik.

The second problem is diversify the type of players that make or nearly make the step at Arsenal. They are all attacking midfielders or converted midfielder into fullback.

Arsenal academy has not produced a single CB, nor defensive midfielder of note since the beginning of the premiership. That is not an accident. Something is seriously wrong with our defensive approach.

The problem is that is also repeated at the senior level. So unless we buy the finished article, no CB makes the grade at Arsenal. The last young CB Arsenal bought who was a success is Kolo Toure. But he was lucky to be partnered with Sol Campbell.

So it’s not just that he’s injury prone? Or it is? Make up your mind Freddie

Because I can’t for the life of me see why any coach worth their salt would select a player who can’t shoot and hasn’t developed and isn’t worth signing on a free contract would be selected by arsenal, a top 5 club and one of Europe’s biggest throughout a 23 game winning streak when he has 4 other options on the bench and one on loan

Either welbeck has value and that’s why emery selects him or he doesn’t and emery was foolish to do so. Can’t be both.

  39. Un na naai

If welbeck offers no value then why did emery select him as starter? Surely he offers value if he’s starting for a club like arsenal over players like Mkhitaryan and ozil.

  40. Valentin

I don’t like Sadiq Khan, but blaming him for the increase of number of knife crime is ridiculous.

Theresa May cut the number of police officers by half in London. She also cut the number of social workers that would have help spot trouble teens before they offend.

Boris Johnson was a disaster as mayor of London. Ludicrous amount of money spend on Vanity projects that went nowhere. Water canon vehicles that were illegal to use in London and then illegal to sell abroad. Finally had to be sold for scrap metal. 35 millions spend on a private garden bridge that was never built. Millions spent on researching the Estuary airport that was not technically feasible nor likely to get the go ahead as destroying the marsch in a conservation/protected area.

Sadiq Khan is the same, all bluster and not a lot of effective actions. The difference with Boris time as major is that there is no money left to make any vanity project.

  41. Freddie Ljungberg

    Don

“Because I can’t for the life of me see why any coach worth their salt would select a player who can’t shoot and hasn’t developed and isn’t worth signing on a free contract would be selected by arsenal, a top 5 club and one of Europe’s biggest throughout a 23 game winning streak when he has 4 other options on the bench and one on loan”

I don’t even know what you’re arguing anymore to be honest Don. You said we could get a fee last summer for him, despite the club (Raul) saying we wanted to sell but he wanted to see out his contract, thanks to your daddy Wenger we didn’t have any leverage.

just because he hasn’t developed to his full potential doesn’t mean he’s in a foetus state, just because he’s not a great finisher doesn’t mean he can’t shoot. Just because he isn’t a great player doesn’t mean he’s not the best option in a squad devoid of wide options.

Nuance, levels, I know these are difficult concepts for your neanderthal brain to comprehend but ask the nearest adult and maybe they can help you.

I imagine he has difficulty finding a new club because his wages doesn’t match his ability, same as many of our other players, doesn’t mean we can sideline everyone that’s overpaid, we wouldn’t be able to field a 5 a side then.

  42. Unai

Un, the whole debate surrounds your assertion that Emery has thrown income away by not getting a transfer fee for Welbeck and Ramsey not wellbecks contribution to the club currently or last season.

More than one definition of value, clearly, uninjured he has a contribution value, hard to argue against that really.

  43. Gbat

Welbeck had 1 league start and 7 sub appearances in the league. Started in the League Cup and Europa. Played a massive 604 minutes of that unbeaten run.

  44. CG

“”Welbeck hasn’t yet found a club?””””

I know most on here are Brain Dead or Brainwashed with a few honorable exceptions…..but Welbeck and his agent are sitting tight….and applying basic Supply and Demand Economics….

    He is a free agent.

    After the transfer window shuts.

He becomes an even more attractive proposition to suitors….ie. he will earn more money.

Crikey, Le Grovers what’s happening to your Brain Cells over there?

Kolasinac went up against two c**ts with carving knives to defend himself and his team mate. Now that’s what I call a defender. Guys a hero.

  46. Marc

Conversation between club manager and chairman after the transfer window has closed –

“Fuck all of our strikers are injured for 6 months what are we going to do?”

“Don’t worry we can still sign Danny Welbeck”

    “Fantastic we’ll be OK then”

Conversation 1 week later between same manager and chairman

“Fuck all of our strikers are injured for 6 months and now we’ve got Danny Welbeck on £100k per week – what are we going to do?”

    “Oh fuck”

  47. China1

CG ah so that’s what’s happening is it?

Thanks for the lesson in economics. I do work for a bank but still appreciated.

I look forward to seeing the window close and him landing a fat salary at a major club.

    Tick tock!!

  48. jwl

I’d forgotten all about Welbeck, he was was badly advised if he still hasn’t found new team yet due to lack of interest.

  49. CG

Whoever Signs Welbeck will probably still get a player who will get injuries….but he is worth the risk on a Bosman ( he has played for MUFC , AFC and England and scores goals)

We are spending £ 30 million on player that wont be play more than 12 games this calendar year

There will not be a worse signing by any Club in Europe than the £30 000 000 we are shelling out on the injured Tierney

    Its smacks of total desperation.
    Not needed..
Besides he ain’t as good as Sead K.

  50. Valentin

The first ever Fortnite World Cup starts today.
All the thieves had to do was to wait one day and steal his car while he played.
Will we ever see Özil again?

  51. Valentin

Wellbeck problem is his rather extensive injuries history. If he refuses to accept either a lower base salary or a pay as you play deal, he is likely to only be offered very short deal.

He is a decent player, so he will find a new club maybe not at the financial condition he was hoping for.

  52. Gentlebris

His daddy and me are old pals.

See, who has any inside ‘sauce’ about Everton bringing £60m to the table for Zaha before my mind goes ballistic.

  53. jwl

Marc – only way I’d agree to sign Welbeck is nominal salary and much more on pay to play contract or pay per goal scored. It is amazing how many broken players Wenger was able to accumulate.

You cut me deep. Look mate you were raised in one of the most corrupt and violent countries on earth

Yet isn’t it surprising that you raised with all the privileges in England turned out to be a vile racist, homophobic, misogynist and a boor??

    Aren’t you ashamed??

  56. China1

Welbeck is nothing more than a runner, sorry to say it

A career as a long distance runner would’ve been much more suited to him and he might’ve got fewer injuries in a non contact sport

He literally has no discernible qualities outside of pace and stamina. He doesn’t have a good first touch, he can’t score, gets few assists, isn’t that technically impressive, isn’t an especially good crosser, goes down under contact from most challenges and isn’t good in the air. He doesn’t have noteworthy vision or reading of the game

He’s not the worst player in the world but he’s worse than Walcott who isn’t good enough to play every week at Everton.

Welbeck is a West brom standard player – or even a bench player

Even his stats which are piss poor are padded most seasons by a hat trick or two against some random dross team like Basel which covers that he rarely scores and misses bucket loads of nailed on chances for most of the time he’s fit

I know this is a brutal review of his ability but I think it’s accurate. Welbeck played for Utd because he had a lot of potential. He played for arsenal because arsenal were not sharp enough to recognize he’d never fulfill it

  57. Gentlebris

‘A place where voodoo is still practiced and albino children are murdered so they can have their limbs consumed’

That was a nauseating lie. No people on earth consume albino limbs.

You will even find that most African countries don’t allow males to fuck males like legislation allows in UK.

I’m not judging no one, just saying no society is perfect.

  58. KAY Boss

Don’t know what Dortmund really want to do this summer. after signing thorgan Harvard and another winger (forgotten his name), they’ve bid about £37m for Malcom. Don’t know how authentic the story is, but but they seem to be going for all possible fire power availble to enrich their arsenal.
The Welbeck debate is funny. Guy was never fit and needed to move on same as Ramsey. Their departure is music to my ears, because they ain’t players we could rely on season in season out.
