Spaniard lands, more to follow in ‘big week’

by & filed under News Review.

Arsenal made their first starting 11 signing of the summer. Dani Cabellos has landed with us for a one-season loan stint. The Spanish technician doesn’t come with a right to buy, which is a shame, but be real people… we’d probably offer £52.50 a year over the next 40 years and try and sweeten it with a small goat with wheels for back legs.

Key message for me is that we finally did a deal.

Big Dave Ornstein reckons this is a going to be a significant week for the club, with Saliba also in the hopper.

There are rumours that Palace won’t budge for Zaha and Celtic are planning on holding onto Tierney because too much of the deal is tied to Champions League, something their people think might be out of our reach.

It’s a bit disappointing we’re doing so badly on the Tierney front, likely because they don’t want to feel like we marched them through the playground with no trousers on (the dream analogy) like Southampton did with VVD. Hopefully, there’s a fallback deal we can chase down.

Zaha seems different to me because he’s older and he needs to move now. Palace is technically in a position to play hardball (5 year deal), but at the same time, they desperately need to strengthen their backline, and as we’re seeing the world over… clubs don’t want to hold onto players that’ll shit-post at their club and sulk all season.

I don’t know Zaha, but he looks a big character, and the fact he’s their best player means they look to him for more than just football… when you sit in 12th place, only 10 points splits you from 16th. Any disruption can be critical to survival… and if they have to sell him when they’ve been relegated, they’ll not be getting £55m and Reiss Nelson.

Big clubs generally don’t fuck around with players that don’t want to be there, a unified culture is far too important.

Cesc, Nasri, Song, and RVP were all let go in the end because the cost of the keeping them wasn’t worth the aggro. PSG will bomb off Neymar. Ajax won’t keep any of their youth products against their will. Atleti said goodbye to AG.

In other news, one signing we can get behind is the MIGHTY Camden Hells being our beer partner moving forward. No more piss water people, proper beer, locally sourced and tasty. That’ll make being 1-0 down at halftime feel a smidgen better!

There are 17 days left before the transfer window shuts, and it’s hard to see how we’ll really have moved the squad forward. The biggest concern for me is that even if we bring in all the players this week, the talent won’t have had a full preseason with us, and if we have to pick players up from other countries, we need these folk to hit the ground running. Coming in from Spain or Scotland… well, let’s just say that’s a huge ask.

It’s also looking ever more likely that we’ll be rolling hard with all the players we want gone, unless there are some predators lurking in the shadows waiting with a seriously lowball bid to see how desperate we’ll be (please god say there are clubs waiting to pounce).

We’re already seeing that with Laurent K. He’s done his deal with the French clubs, regardless of what his agent says… the financials are clearly geared around a low fee.

If you think Mustafi and a few of the others aren’t thinking the same thing, you are NAIVE. Or less conspiratorial than I am. The last week could be very Harry Redknapp, because that’s the way to supposed contacts method of scouting works.

I did think it was amusing in the comments section the other day when people were arguing that contacts scouting is good because, you know, you have to make contact to buy. To those who think that way, let’s be real here, if this is what contacts scouting looks like, it’s pretty fucking dire. No system in the world should wait for agents to offer players. We should be proactive, we should attack our targets and we should have sufficient data knowledge that we’re doing it before other clubs (ala, Dortmund).

Let’s hope Edu nips that nonsense in the bud and guns for the smartest approach to finding new talent.

Finally, I wanted to write this because there’s just too much wokeness going on about Rapinoe and that Bellerin picture.

Facts of life, there are cunts on the internet. You can’t put a picture of a disabled kid on the internet without some lowlife making depraved comments. People are cunts, unfortunately, the internet grows them like mushrooms. We’re not changing that.

However, this Rapinoe furore is so beyond the pale and the ‘why’ around it is such nonsense.

She’s one of the best female footballers in the world. She said she’d do something epic. She delivered on it. She is supremely arrogant. That is her schtick.

‘Men don’t like her because they can’t fuck her and they are threatened’

Why do we have to lower the argument to this because it’s a woman?

Maybe Rapinoe is a fucking PR genius playing the game like an absolute pro? Can we not salute her game? Can we not give a woman credit for doing a damn fine job raising her profile?

We do when it’s a man. Kap, McGregor, Ali, Ibra… the greatest, Floyd Mayweather. In fact, Floyd accused Connor of stealing a black man’s game by shit-talking so the haters would pay to see him lose.

That’s Rapinoe. Fair play to her. This isn’t to do with sex. Toxic masculinity. Some other woke trope.

This is to do with an arrogant sporting talent actually delivering. Can’t we just let a woman have that? Isn’t making her out to be a victim over a protagonist worse? I think so. She’s got game, she knows how to work a crowd and she’s raising the profile of the women’s game like no other. She’ll be rolling in cash this season. Women’s football will feel her halo effect. More clubs will get sponsors. More fans will go to see her. Everyone wins because @JoeMushroomPants wants to talk shit and keep the conversation going.

I applaud the player for having game. Great work.

Right, that’s me done. x

Yea clubs don’t sound out targets before June, we’ve heard your hot take on transfers. It’s just a bit dim is all.

Absolutely nothing stopping us having added 2 first team players to the here and now. Nothing. You can continue to draw up this scenario of savvy negotiating but it’s fruits are there for all to see, July 24th and sweating over a season long loan and 18 year old bought for next season.

Overhaul that is, turned right upside down.

Reiss Nelson is giving me Jermaine Pennant vibes. All the talent but just seems like he’s going to faded away

The main aim of pre-season friendlies is to get players back to fitness.

    Everything after that is secondary.

    I thought everybody knew that.

“Everton will hold talks over the signing of Wilfried Zaha this week, according to Sky sources.

However, a source close to the player has told Sky Sports News the Crystal Palace winger’s preference remains a move to Arsenal.”

Proper meltdown this would cause if it goes through, but it’s Sky sources so………

You’ve dismissed the possibility that we could’ve negotiated targets before May twice now. There’s no twisting necessary when you constantly barrel roll defensively by making inane remark after remark.

  9. Guns of Hackney

When Arsenal decided to roll again with the pitiful, Emery…we raised the white flag for the new season. What exactly did Emery do that Arsenal thought “this guy gets it”?

Was it the capitulation in the league or the capitulation in the Europa final that convinced the board?

Sign whoever you like but with koko the clown in charge, we aren’t producing CL football.

I bet we don’t even win the Emirates Cup.

  10. Receding Hairline

The only thing lacking in sense or meaning here is your demand things are done more efficiently now after spending years on here defending the old boss, your demand for tactics after defending 8-2 and 10-2 agg thrashings, all of a sudden your expectations of Arsenal is for us to be up there with the best in the world after spending years telling us why it is impossible and Wenger is the over-achieving.

Yes it’s possible clubs don’t know who and who they want to move on in May or who they may need to sell to balance the books, Madrid didn’t make Ozil available until late into the window, Arteta was not on the transfer list until we got embarrassed at Old Trafford and he forced his way out of Everton to join. That you want to paint a picture that all transfers are possible in May and doubling down on it isn’t surprising considering you are not very bright Charles

“The only thing lacking in sense or meaning here is your demand things are done more efficiently now after spending years on here defending the old boss“

Yea nothing to do with the total overhaul of the club behind the scenes specifically to facilitate a modern approach to everything being discussed.

“all of a sudden your expectations of Arsenal is for us to be up there with the best in the world after spending years telling us why it is impossible and Wenger is the over-achieving.”

Going to quote me on that? Sounds a lot like you talking out your walnut because you’re aiming to score points. Last summer, and during the season, I stated multiple times I had zero concrete expectations in terms of where we ended up and it was all about the process and progress. Two for two in the lying stakes so far, can you make it a hat trick?

“That you want to paint a picture that all transfers are possible in May and doubling down on it isn’t surprising considering you are not very bright Charles”

YESSS, he’s done it, the man with the dodgy hair and a dream has scored the liars hat trick.

I never stated all transfers are possible before May, I said negotiations and targets are drawn up long before then. I also said I’ve no issue with some protracted transfers like Zaha, because it’s big money and delicate. Kieran Tierney however is amateurish, he’s a modest fee from a club open to selling. That should’ve been done a month ago.

Slow clap for you though Shrek, I applaud the effort. Back to your swamp you go.

“The main aim of pre-season friendlies is to get players back to fitness”

Of course it is but it’s difficult to fathom why any manager( or fan) would want a team that is playing full of confidence against Real Madrid , to then lose that confidence due to unnecessary personnel and tactical changes .

Imagine the difference in the changing room at half time compared to full time .

It would have been buzzing at half time .
Full time , one would imagine the players were despondent after being run ragged.

It goes back to Ozil’s ” you’re not a coach remark “…..how many of those experienced players were looking across at Emery at full time and thinking “why did you allow that to happen when we were in total control of the game”

Players are rotated in friendlies during the match precisely because of fitness matters. The eye is on getting the players right for the competitive fixtures ahead.

The eye is not on a desperation to beat Real Madrid in a friendly.

  18. Marc

Oh dear Pierre’s on the any stick to beat Emery path again. In a pre season match the positives of half time will still be kept, the negatives of the second half will remind players that they need to keep focused and apply themselves.

No wonder they have no money.”

Eurosport nailed it there. I guess Pierre will be boycotting that channel from now on.

  21. Chris

Pierre is hyper critical of Emery yet never one word against Arsene.

They are, but last night was a tactical and personnel change that went wrong , very similar to Emery’s game management v Rennes when Sokratis was sent off .

“Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said his ‘first objective’ is to work with a back four next season, although he plans to keep the back three as an option.”

Disagree, we should never play a back three again, we don’t have the players for it (nor for a back four if i am being honest)

“He said: “We want to use two systems but our first objective is to play with a back four. We are continuing working on that and, above all, feel that we defensively get stronger with a back four with Sead, with Ainsley, with Jenkinson and with Hector when he comes back”

Two of those players are useless in a back four, one of them should not be playing for Arsenal, it’s talk like this that will cost you your job come season end. Sugar coating the reality

They claim Ceballos has tweeted some controversial stuff in the past, with some of these since deleted, including mocking legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas for the size of his manhood, whilst stating he’d like to ‘f**k’ his wife Sara Carbonero.

“The youngster has also launched attacks on advocates for Catalan independence and hinting at a support for far-right authoritarian leader Francisco Franco, according to the Sun, once tweeting: “Get out of the country, Catalans! With Franco this never would have happened.

He is also claimed to have tweeted: “They should drop a bomb on the stadium and kill all those Catalan and Basque dogs” in response to Catalan and Basque fans booing the Spanish national anthem ahead of a game between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao in 2015.”

    At least Ceballos seems nice…

  39. Nelson

Of the two Milan teams, Inter looks much better organized. They may not have enough to compete against Juv.

I remember my son telling me years back that Kos was not a born leader and the only reason he was playing for Arsenal was because he was French.

    So so true.

There were far better options out there but because he was revered so much by Monsieur Wenger, he was able to make a nice comfortable bed for himself.

He always has a high profile error in him but he has been one of our most consistent defenders for a few years now. Of course he is wildly overrated among Arsenal fans but that’s just a sign of the times. We have sen so many poor players play for this club over the last ten years competency is considered a world class attribute

I’m not saying most of our team isn’t a bunch of pussies, because they clearly are, and I’m for bringing in Ceballos so Mesut Rapinoe can park himself on the bench, still it’s not a good look.

As I said though, it’s 4 years ago and his team has probably coached him out of that behaviour.

If we needed someone at the club tweeting offensive far right garbage all we have to do is give Don or GoH an official Arsenal account and a phone. Much cheaper than loaning a player for 3m.

You are right it is pre-season, but you are wrong to object to an intelligent analysis of the game. In fact such an analysis should be done even during practice matches. That is the way to correct deficiencies and improve drastically.

On another note , looking at idiotic pairings done by Emery, guess only salvation is if he gets a stroke and is confined to ICU. Maybe the old timer Invincibles will then step up and show their mettle and show up the Spanish Waiter for what he is.

  53. Dissenter

La liga starts a week after the premier league and it’s obvious that Arsenal are in a more advanced state of physical conditioning compared to Madrid.
These players have GPS wearable on sending all sorts of data to the coaches and physios. Emery is not the only one who decides how long players stay on the field in the preseason. He has to work with the physios to determine that.
I just thought he left the senior player on till the mid 2nd half because they were working on their stamina and endurance.
Emery doesn’t determine everything. Asensio got injured even after playing a few minutes in the 2nd half. Can you imagine the uproar here if Asensio injury had happened to an Arsenal player?

Mhki and Ozil were not paired in front of Xhaka once all of last season, maybe they was a reason it was done yesterday.

Except that they were not paired together. Özil and Aubameyang were playing on the wing in a 4-4-1 after Sokratis red card. Xhaka and Mhikitarian were paired together in the centre of midfield. That combination was done against Leicester where it was open door policy in the centre midfield.

I was not aware that there was standing rule to replace all 11 players at halftime for preseason friendlies.
Managers work with their backroom to determine the physical conditioning of the players with data, some need more minutes so get to stay more. Then I would assume that they have to consider which players are starters so they have to be as close to 100% by opening day.
Some of those backroom staff are data chewers. Both teams had more heavy duty laptops running that day traders do on the stock exchange. I’m pretty sure that these big teams [like us] travel with tonnes of equipment.

“That is your usual tactic, when you are shown up, distract by lying forcefully, insinuating thing and insulting people.”

The only person showing himself up here is you Valentin, obsessing over tactics in a preseason friendly, and i do not see where i insulted you, you have lied blatantly on here countless time in your blind personal rage against Emery, i don’t particularly care what you have against him but anything out your mouth concerning Emery is laced with agenda

  68. Receding Hairline

“You too, did not get the memo from Receding!”

    LOL

You said a change made in a preseason friendly was “unnecessary” . I simply pointed out to here entire first elevens are subbed at half time during preseason.

Don’t know what you are on about but then again it’s you

  69. Dissenter

    Valentin
    Let me get this right…
You didn’t agree with RH’s opinion about changing all 11 players at halftime, yet you could not resist from turning it into an opportunity fire salvos at Emery
Says all about how everything is all about Emery.
Never mind that the players have GPS wearable on telling the physios their state of conditioning.

  70. Marc

Whilst there’s the usual back and forth on here I’ve got to say that the comments section have been more pleasant and more importantly a lot more interesting the last few days without CG’s presence.

I don’t know whether Pedro banned him or if he’s just away but whatever it is please keep it in place.

  71. Valentin

    Receding,

    Where did I lie?
Because Marko says so. The same flat-earther who when presented with a verbatim quote from PV4 was accusing him of lying rather than concede he was wrong.
The same one who when I stated that Arsenal did keep people as consultant stated that I was lying. When I pointed to him to a arsenal.com link stating exactly that, went into full gaslighting mode rather than accepting he was wrong.

Oh I forgot you don’t need to observe facts you already know.

  72. Valentin

    Dissenter,

It was not a salvo against Emery, it was against Receding stating as facts when clearly if he has observed the game he would have known that was not the case.

  73. Champagne charlie

“Also funny you needed a second 5-1 dropping to drop such tame criticism, yet have called for a mid season sacking in the current managers first season.“

Haha state of you now back peddling. Oh more lies too, I’ve never said a mid-season sacking was the way to go, I said end of the season. Can’t help yourself

  74. Valentin

    Dissenter,

I agreed with your comment at 14:39:41.
Obviously my attempt at humour just bypassed you.

  75. salpardisenyc

Assuming Ceballos doesn’t fall thru, think Emery and Co would be best suited to focus on one area of pitch with remainder of summers budget and go for shoring up the defense.

As it stands easy to see us ship more goals than last season which will surely push us further down table.

    Promote Saka, Willock and Nelson.

  76. Receding Hairline

“It was not a salvo against Emery, it was against Receding stating as facts when clearly if he has observed the game he would have known that was not the case.”

Never said an the entire team was changed at half time in the game against Arsenal and Madrid Valentin so again what are we arguing on exactly??

  77. Valentin

It has been said before in view of the state of the squad and Arsenal finance, we should promote Saka, Nelson, Willock and spend money on a CB readily available and a dominant central midfielder.
Whatever system we play our defensive spine is not fit for purpose.

  78. Receding Hairline

“The same one who when I stated that Arsenal did keep people as consultant stated that I was lying. When I pointed to him to a arsenal.com link stating exactly that, ”

Except the man you insisted was kept on as consultant was no longer working at the club at the time you made that claim………..

  79. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

    Val

    Agreed

It’s shocking the club has not addressed Thst this window

    We have 3 CB
    Holding
    Papa
    Chambers

    Or maybe medley ?

  80. Receding Hairline

What’s shocking is that the powers that be actually wanted Koscielny to stay and play a major part next season. Monreal is also hanging around,he looked retired last night, interesting to see what happens if indeed Tierney is brought in. Will Monreal be used in central defense??

We are conceding bucket loads again next season if so

  81. Valentin

    Receding,

You said a change made in a preseason friendly was “unnecessary” . I simply pointed out to here entire first elevens are subbed at half time during preseason.

I never said that changing was unnecessary. Quite clearly we could not have a second half with just one CB. I stated that removing the only central midfielder with defensive awareness was akin to open the door. Real Madrid just accepted the invitation.

Emery could have selected to take Özil or Mhikitarian out. He did it 15 minutes later and then put Robbie Burton alongside Xhaka. I am not sure that those 15 minutes will make a massive difference to the fitness of either of them. However what I am sure is that change gave Real Madrid the impetus.

You did not like that comment that in my opinion that was a mistake. Exactly the same made against Rennes under similar circumstances.

Regarding changing the entire 11, only Real Madrid did it. Again the fact that they are at least 1 week behind us in term of fitness is reason enough.

You then tried to justify Willock removal because no player plays pre-season entire game. I retorted that Xhaka played the entire 90 minutes.

  82. Valentin

    Receding,

    Lie again.

I said that somebody told me that he was back at Arsenal. I then asked Pedro if he knew if that was true.
Marko went and accused me of lying and that Arsenal would never use external consultant. I said that Arsenal did make use of consultants and posted the arsenal.com link.

  83. Valentin

    RSPC,

Having seen Medley play, I am far from convinced by him. He is a neat tidy and good passer, but he has sometimes a tendency to go on a walk about, leaving gap in the center of the defense.
He needs at least one year on loan, playing alongside a more tactically astute centre back.

But yes, this is shocking that our main deficiencies has not been addressed. Whatever changes is made further up will be negated by us conceding goals via our soft center.

  84. Cesc Appeal

The rumour is both Saliba and Dani Ceballos are being shown around the training ground this afternoon.

  85. Cesc Appeal

There’s a Q&A with Sanllehi tomorrow apparently so likely the signings are announced tomorrow morning to provide at least some positive talking points for the club.

  86. Gonsterous

Surely gwen and torr will get better this season, after having bed in. Ceballos deal looks done, get in a winger and maybe a CB or LB and we have done quite well regarding the ins. Then we have time to shift some dross out.
Mhiki and mustafi are a must. Ozil may be harder to shift.

  87. HighburyLegend

@Gonsterous : concerning Torreira, it will depends on the weather.
I don’t care if Mhiki stay, I want Mustafi out more than anything.

    Even more than Ozil lol
