Exclusive: The spark that led to the Laurent Koscielny strike situation

by .

I did think Arsenal jumped the gun with that weird press release about Laurent K going on strike. Seemed a little defensive for something that should have been dealt with in-house like it would have under Arsene.

Anyway, the counter-attack is underway and I was told that there’s more to the story than Laurent bombing preseason because he’s a brat.

Apparently, when he signed his last deal with Arsenal, there was a final year clause that changed things up. Now, don’t hold me to contract details, but the gist was he was paid more than is reported up front, and now he’s in the final year, his salary has dropped to Jenks levels and it’s heavily performance related. I think this is a Huss evolution of doing deals.

He’s going to be 34 in September. He knows he won’t be played much. Holding will come back into the mix, Mustafi and Sokratis are ahead of him, Mavrapanos might come good and even if they’re all out, he’s massively injury prone these days. He thought there was a gentleman’s agreement that he could leave. He has a 3 year deal on the table to head to the south of France. He feels betrayed and is going to gun to get what he wants.

I don’t know why anyone believes in gentleman’s agreements or holds people to account for things they say in the corridor. I don’t know why he signed a deal that moved to performance related in his last year. I don’t know what’s going to happen. But… you can kind of understand why he’s gunning hard to exit here. He’s looking to max out retirement and he’s insecure about his body being able to last another year in the Premier League. He’s also been with us for 9 years and I’d imagine under Wenger, he’d be leaving the club without a fuss.

Again, I’m not sure why we’d hold onto him. He’s not really a big voice at Arsenal, he’s never been a leader and we shouldn’t be depending on someone with his injury record at his age. This isn’t us keeping John Terry behind. However, I guess Arsenal are looking at his as value for money if he’s on £45k a week.

It’s also an interesting contract evolution. Pay players more in the upfront, then make sure the final year isn’t pleasant. You either resign to get more money, or you give 100% focus and don’t mail it in so you make up the lost revenue. Clever on paper for sure.

I do worry about the culture at Arsenal and what all of this says about us.

We’re trying to move the club into a space where kids can learn their trade and grow into elite performers.

What are they learning at Arsenal? Who is guiding them?

You have 3-5 players who are here because they love their contracts.

Our captain is on strike.

The next in line for the armband is Xhaka, a player everyone knows isn’t good enough.

The biggest player at the club hates the manager, doesn’t turn up for big away days and is very publicly digging his heels in to stay.

Is any of this inspiring for young people? Does any of this look like good education? Are we creating the right environment to grow the best athletes?

In a game of paper-thin margins, these things matter.

Never mind that we’re a total shit show right now, the bigger concern for at the minute is how rotten our culture is and much hard work and future planning needs to be implemented to course correct us to a Champions League final in 5 years time.

Right, see you in the comments. x

So lemme get this straight we approached Celtic for Tierney and was quoted 25M about a month or so ago

Then Raul and his cohorts of clowns thought it wisely to bid 15M and embarrassingly kept on haggling for a complete for weeks , wasting precious time which would have been used in pursuing other targets, dithering and whatnot

having been fed up of being made mockery of by all and sundry to then come back and pay the full moolah

Makes you wonder the point of it all

We’re absolute amateurs in transfer dealings and are likely to always be taken to the cleaners by other clubs. Embarrassing

Banter FC or ClownFC always a banker for a good chuckle

  2. Up 4 grabs now

He still has to then get a preseason in him and that’s if there are no other complications?

With all due respect to you, if your nipping down the shops for a fry up, I’m guessing your not a top class athlete, so can be a fine after a week, Tierneys level might be a few more above yours lol.

  3. Micheal

“Kroenke must see the logic and freeing up funds though. How he can expect UCL football with a £40 Million budget is beyond me. Particularly as he sat back and allowed us to get into this position.”

Well said Cesc. Spoken liken a true football fan and echoing what most of us feel.

Unfortunately, we are saddled with an owner who has no interest in football. Arsenal will never prosper while that cunt owns the club.

  4. Up 4 grabs now

Cesc, that was the problem with last summer, and why I protect emery a bit more than some on here.
Last summer was OK but we needed even more, with more money spending.

We didn’t even get the job half done last summer.
This year we still need two wingers a centreback a left back a defensive midfielder and Santi replacement.

Six players still, we needed that last year and more.

At the moment we’re so flaky in defence we’re like the spuds in the mid nineties with Klinsmann trying to outscore teams because the defence is piss poor.

  5. David Smith

Why do this club , with its tight arse money obsessed owner consistently employ wasteful, incompetent idiots?

  6. Marc

Mate I was early 40’s and drink too much – my point was I walked down the shops the morning after having the op.

Tierney will take a while to back up to speed but unless there are some extreme complications we’re not signing someone with a chronic condition. If he doesn’t start the first couple matches but is a good player what’s the problem?

  7. Up 4 grabs now

I get what your saying, its not liking coming back from a broken leg or worse. I guess it depends on when he can start preseason?
It’s just that our first choice right back and centreback will be missing till October as well. So not ideal.

  8. Batistuta

Haven’t you read Dissenter’s take on the other page about how wise it was for us to waste almost a month haggling and still end up paying the actual amount the selling club asked for initially

  9. Marc

Again everyone is so fucking keen to jump to the conclusion that Arsenal have fucked something up. The headlines say Arsenal make improved offer of £25 million and immediately that means we’re offering a load more cash – how does anyone know that we haven’t offered a bit more cash and improved the add ons to make the deal more appealing?

  10. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

No way are we getting Everton player

The Italians will charge to much.
We won’t pay then another club come in an buy him…

    Rinse repeat wash again.

  11. R.S.P.C.Arsenal

I give it one season before edu jacks it in.

Can’t blame him working with the new Jim Henson and the muppets.

  12. Un na naai

We’ve added two. Nelson and Martinelli. Unless you believe we are getting Pepe for £80m 😂

  13. Chitom

Arsenal should pay asking prices for players they might be interested in right off the bat to please the critics. Otherwise it’s a sign of either disrespect or amateur like approach to transfers by them.

Zaha for 80m? No problem Crystal Palace , right this minute, thank you and pleasure doing business with you.
Thierney for 25m? Why that’s a great price, thank you so much, here you go.

Meanwhile Kroenke gets on the horn to Raul asking what the Fcuk is going on cos he just heard Arsenal have spent 65 m more that he authorized them to spend.

To which Raul responded not to worry because some guys on Legrove said Arsenal would be crazy not to get these players at these valuations. It’s all good.

  14. Dissenter

Say we signed Kierkegaard three weeks ago. He’s not fit for preseason but then- that will satisfy your cravings for transfers.
I posed a lot of scenarios for you there.
This may be Celtic way of giving in, the exact final fee will never be known and neither you nor I will know what held it up initially.

This leak is apparently from Celtic.
Arsenal were right to not just drop the initial fee and it’s not clear that we’ve done that even now. They may have had to make enquiries about other options. These are all part of standard negotiations.

Who freaking cares about what the tabloids say, 99% of what they write in the summer is just to draw clicks to their websites.

  15. Dissenter

Seems you’re never conducted any negotiations nor haggled in an African street market before.
This player is fully match fit and can’t pass a medical yet. What’s the rush?

  16. Nelson

I am disappointed with the academy. How come they couldn’t come up with at least one half decent CB for as long as I can remember. Arsenal’s CB is always imported. Currently, there are a few promising forwards but again no CB insight.

  17. Dissenter

Did Edu travel with the squad to the states?
Think I saw his pics in LA with the squad, shouldn’t he be talking to the likes of Batistuta and Victorious about hot to properly negotiate for players?

  18. Dissenter

Amaechi looks like a decent prospect.
The disappointment is not giving this lads a chance to rise or swim.

Maybe we need a transfer ban for just being tire kickers, then we will give yoot a chance.

“””The Suarez fiasco, if really reported today is surely a big nail in the coffin for Emery and his lack of trust in youth.”””

Which gives me chance to congratulate PedRo on another stunning Exclusive** he revealed weeks ago.

It was here FIRST- you read the real reason why Dortmund Eye left.

Emery wanted his injured mate Suarez.

Dortmund Eye wanted Arsenal to promote the internal youth over the Suarez deal.

The Spiv sided with his patsy and fellow countryman Emery and over The German.

    Absolutely Disgraceful.
    But hardly surprising .
(The Spiv ain’t got an ounce of integrity in him)

Every day Emery stays in his post- Rauls position becomes more untenable too.

** and it is all free!

“ Arsenal’s former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat was ‘dismayed’ by Unai Emery’s decision to sign Denis Suarez shortly before he left the club, according to reports. Mislintat spent just 14 months at Arsenal and oversaw several key transfers during his time at the club, most notably the arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi. But Mislintat, who was nicknamed ‘Diamond Eye’ in Germany after his series of shrewd signings for Borussia Dortmund, became disillusioned at Arsenal and had several disagreements with the club’s head of football Raul Sanllehi. According to The Sunday Times, Mislintat was also ‘dismayed’ by Emery’s insistence on signing Suarez from Barcelona as he had earmarked two Arsenal academy players to challenge for the position on the right flank instead. Sven Mislintat left Arsenal after just 14 months at the club (Getty Images) Mislintat is said to have urged Emery to give more chances to Joe Willock and Bukayo Saka, but the Arsenal boss overruled the German and pushed to complete the loan deal for Suarez.

  21. Marc

I would ask why our head scout was getting involved in the Arsenal youth system rather than scouting youth players from other teams.

Maybe he should have spent more time worrying about his own job than other peoples.

  22. Champagne Charlie

Dissenter showing up his franchise following mentality nibbling at posters who dare be perplexed by our current inactivity.

    Absolute fair weather

  23. S Asoa

If the Head Scout identifies that Sako whom we have seen play has better potential than other club players we could afford , why not have a global view including what we have and save money for a next level player we badly need such as a defender.

  24. Marko

The guy who was responsible for us signing Lichtsteiner was reportedly dismayed that we signed Suarez on loan…eh so what.

As for the Tierney injury stuff he is in rehab and was scheduled to be okay within the month. The only issue is that he got these injuries from playing excessively and that becomes an issue because he’d automatically be first choice at Arsenal because the other two are such turds. Any sort of occasional rest or rotation will be rare.

  25. Champagne Charlie

Why on earth wouldn’t Mslinstat be privy to the talent coming out of the club?

It quite literally shapes the type of talent he might pursue if he believes we have some occupying a particular role.

  26. Dissenter

So Sven left because the re were others on the team who wanted Denis Suarez.
Anyone who’s worked in a team knows you don’t win all the time.
It shows that he’s a small minded and not suited for the promotion he was seeking. I’m sure Stuttgart are benefitting from our loss in the German 2nd division.
He could have sat back and scored one big win by seeing the player he didn’t recommend fail.

    vomit inducing.
    Stephen King levels of creepiness.

  31. Dissenter

Who determines when a player is ready to be promoted from the academy?
I would say it’s the head coach and the academy director [and coaches]

The ’chief scout’ has no business intruding into someone else’s lane, no wonder they told him off and hurt his puny feelings.

  32. Marko

It sounds like a made up story honestly. No quotes or nothing. Thought Saka and Willock could play on the right flank instead. Correct me if I’m wrong but neither of them are RW players. Sounds like an easy shit on Arsenal cause it’s the summer piece. We’ll add it to the pile

  33. andy1886

What’s the rush? Getting a player settled, used to his new home, his new environment and work colleagues, thoroughly briefed in terms of tactics, used to a new training regime, new coaches, understanding the ethos and expectations of his new club, and that’s just for starters. Any employee moving to a new position takes time to settle, waiting to late in the window and expecting players to slot right in from the off is the sort of idiot thing Wenger used to do.

  34. Marc

I’m not saying he shouldn’t be aware of our kids but his job is scouting players from other teams.

The more I hear about Sven the more it sounds like he was interested in doing everyone’s job but his own.

  35. Marc

Glad I’m not the only one who finds CG “odd”. I get real nasty vibes about the guy – you certainly wouldn’t leave your kids anywhere near him.

  36. Marc

Did it ever come out why he had the falling out with Tuchel at Dortmund?

Why didn’t Klopp grab him when he left us after all it’s not as if he ended up at Barca or Madrid?

  37. Dissenter

There are people here who will still credit the signings we make in 2029 to the great Sven Mislintat
You see… we are still using that famous list left behind when he scouted U-10 players in Mongolia.

  38. Receding Hairline

Charles jumping at anyone who has a positive word about Emery or Raul while attacking those shooting down negative stories as having an agenda. Just a normal day on le Grove I guess.

  39. Marko

The falling out at Dortmund was over Oliver Torres. Mislintat wanted Gotze back and Tuchel wanted Oliver Torres and the internal power struggle ended with Gotze signed and Tuchel banning Mislintat from the training ground and from communicating with certain staff. Basically Tuchel came off worse out of it. There was a falling out with Zorc as well but no idea why maybe the same instance. He was close to players it seems so maybe there was an issue with undermining the coach I dunno.

  40. S Asoa

and the hoch poch called Dennis Suarez is all over the press.
But guess Agatha Christy puts it in the best way the story will sell.

  41. Cesc Appeal

The Tierney offer doesn’t at all sound like Arsenal have just offered what they want contrary to what some are suggesting on here, sounds as if it’s still less cash up front than Celtic want but now with add ons it will be £25 Million.

  42. Batistuta

    Careful now

You need to have haggled in an African market before to know why it’s important to get your signings in early

  43. Gentlebris
