Welcome Edu (please hurry)

by .

Oh man… I’m err… gonna do this.

Mustafi changed his Instagram bio and REMOVED the links to Arsenal.

Could it mean something?

Who knows. I really, really, really hope so.

Edu. The mightiest of Brazilians just oversaw a win in the Copa America. One more week and he lands back in the land of London Colney. That’s great news. We’re hiring in someone who can build a winning machine. Hooooray!

Sevilla is rumoured to be interested in Mikhi. That’s lovely, but I would imagine his salary would land them about 17 players, so not sure this one has much juice to it.

Kurzawa of PSG. Yes, that left back who always looks REAL cool in the stands, has apparently been told he can leave. Big fan of Emeryball? No doubt. Get on that overlap you absolute beauty.

Ok… I’m going to do it again… Kieran Tierney’s pals reckon the left back is going to stay at Celtic for another season. FFS… we couldn’t push it over the line. Still not quite sure about the sleuthing here. What sort of weirdo is keeping tabs on Tierney’s mates? Why is there ALWAYS a weirdo keeping tabs on football players bios? Why am I writing about it?

Anyway, I wouldn’t be surprised if we pulled the plug on the left back, because that’s old Arsenal, quibbling over £3m to make a useless point then wrapping a comfort blanket excuse around it like, ‘that’s Arsenal class.’ Fuck efficiency. Art of the Deal all the way.

Arsenal, who have managed to move on ONE player all summer, will want to punch themselves in the face when they read this:

🚨Bournemouth have sold Tyrone Mings for £26.5m! A player that has made about 17 appearances in 4 seasons!🚨

What the fuck is going on in Raul’s office? Bournemouth can sell an absolute nobody for £26.5m, and we can’t shift Calum Chambers, Fulham’s player of the season, for a single bloody sausage?

Sometimes I wonder if Raul just needs someone cranking those phones. I’ve worked in recruitment before. Just work out your script and start crushing digits.

‘Good afternoon, my name is Peter Wood, I’m representing the Yellow Sticker department at Arsenal football club, may I speak to your chief buyer?’

‘Well howdy doody, I have many fine products that are hot out the oven, with many genuine buyers interested. To name but a few: A World Cup Champion who is good with concentration, a young player with sturdy legs, a mercurial Germanturkishman with very fine taste in autocrats, a Swiss who always took charge of the spare key, and a Bosnian that will run and run and sometimes act if you ask him nicely. What takes your fancy?’

Easy.

Give me a commission. Say, 5% of every deal, reckon I’d be able to shift them in a week. How hard can it be?

Other things we could do:

  • Offer to buy out their contracts
  • Tell them not to bother coming to training at all, totally shut them out
  • Sell them at literally nothing. Zero transfer fee, just to get them off the books. Because honestly, what is the fucking point in keeping these absolute wasters in the squad for another season? If we don’t take the hit on the books now, we’ll take it in the dressing room and on the pitch all season.

Ok, some of those ideas are a touch extreme. But sheesh, there is NO other club in the world that makes it easier to be an absolute bum than Arsenal.

There’s even a club photo of Ozil, Kola and Mustafi just hanging out.

I am TRIGGERED. How dare they just, you know, walk about together.

I heard through the grapevine that Emery split the kids and the first team from eating meals together at the training ground. No idea why he’d do something like that, maybe he’s trying to create some ambition in the youth ranks, John-Jules out there dreaming of eating a sandwich next to Nacho Monreal is probably how he ended up on the plane to America… regardless, are the players we want eating meals with everyone else? Are we testing their resolve on any level whatsoever?

‘No Ozil, eat your profiteroles roll on that dirty beanbag in the corner, you lazy boy’

Real Madrid seem to be shipping their dross out with absolute ease. What is our problem?

Tyrone Mings for £26.5m! HOW?!

Maybe none of this matters. Raul was just keeping the preseason warm for Edu? Hopefully he has some really fucking great ideas about who he wants to bring with him.

My MAJOR hope is that he doesn’t ship in 15 of his mates. I hope he’s a true pro. He needs a new chief scout, I hope he finds the smartest person doing the most mental things with data you could imagine, unearthing gems in untapped markets, perhaps helping small clubs bat well above their average.

My point is that I hope we’re hiring in a professional. Someone that knows the market. Someone that interviews for the job, you know, best candidate wins like the old days. Hopefully, he has an idea in his head about where the next frontier in football is located. Has a contacts books that can help him. Leans into that contacts book and seeks advice from good people.

We’ll see, but whatever happens, we need something to ignite our dismal post-season. To start training with literally one Brazilian that wasn’t even playing at the highest level is a touch miserable, especially considering how quickly we attacked our business in Sven Mislintat’s first summer.

Right, that’s me done. See you tomorrow. I’m back on the 9am run people.

xx

Your snobbery is misplaced and silly when Arsenal have had such a poor defensive record for so long.

No he’s not but how many who are worse or similar play in the PL?

“Your snobbery is misplaced and silly when Arsenal have had such a poor defensive record for so long.”

Nothing snobbish about not wanting an unremarkable 25 year old from a team who defend as deep as possible, you might start seeing thse errors creep in once he is introduced to Arsenal’s high line

Marko

Rumours that if we were able to get Malcom on loan we would have to commit to purchasing him next summer for £36 Million. I’m somewhat torn about that to be honest. On the one hand if he has a successful loan period not only could we have champions league football the following season but we could have a new permanent winger already bedded in next summer. But on the other hand what if it doesn’t work out not only would we be stuck with him but we’d also be in a position where we couldn’t say target someone like… Read more »

What i am saying is get defenders from attacking teams, Newcastle are such a defensive team 80% of the time it’s hard to tell who is actually competent

One can leave the confines of Le Grove for a 10 day stretch and patch back into the same argument rumbling along with little progress. Meanwhile the current regime operating at peak Wenger form in the banter years with zero humor to accompany. Appears to me Rauls skeletal structure he’s touted is lacking a few key components, notably any vital organs. Thoughts of Edu swooping in and unfurling the red carpet are comedic as he’s certainly been involved in summer dealings at this stage in some capacity. Only logical conclusion that can be drawn is it will be a deadline… Read more »

Why is Neres better than Malcolm???

Both 22 and one did enough to earn his big money move before the other. So what makes him better???

I am no fan of either, i particularly have serious reservations on the Neres dude, but will like to know what makes him better

Please don’t say the caliber of clubs after him

Leicester City won the League by 10 points with worse much worse defenders than Mustafi

Leicester City would not have won the league had they chose Emery instead of Ranieri as their manager.

…and that’s the difference.

Marko

It’s good that we’re targeting pace in the side. A welcome approach finally. Though rumours and words are pointless we need these players actually signed before we can contemplate anything going forward. It’s all well and good suggesting Malcom on loan is great because it means we could still possibly get Zaha but we have to get Malcom first.

Bayern Munich are waiting for the “domino effect” that could help them land a “top player,” according to CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Bayern have signed France world champions Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez but fans are clamouring for further additions to a side that won the German league and cup double last season but did not get past the Champions League round of 16. “Today is July 8. I know that patience is not one of the major virtues of fans or the public,” Rummenigge told reporters at the official presentation of defender Hernandez. “The transfer market is open until Sept.… Read more »

Marko I see what you mean. But in our position if that’s the offer on the table I think I would take it. The thought of being able to secure both Malcom and Zaha this summer is too much to refuse. Zaha, Aubameyang, Malcom could potentially be a seriously good front line and certainly would mean teams have to give us far more respect. Especially if we landed Tierney as well and when Bellerin returns. I have to admit I’m not really that interested in Neres, he strikes me as a move to Everton, fail to hack the EPL and… Read more »

Serious question, why sell chambers when he’s not a bad backup option at RB but keep AMN there when he hasn’t demonstrated he’s ready yet?

We need to improve the defense. Putting out hopes in bellerin to stay fit and AMN to improve significantly this season is pretty hopeful imo

I’d feel safer with chambers there and AMN can be moved as a squad player into a less consequential position, such as a winger

Graham62

“Mustafi is not the worst defender in the world”

“No! No! , I won’t have it. There’s a defender in Eastbourne”

You can always relate things back to Fawlty Towers.

Marc

The deal for Malcolm at £36 million is worth a punt. If he doesn’t work out with the money chucked round for players we will be able to recoup a big chunk of the money. What we need to do is make sure he’s not on a salary that would prevent a sale. If he does work out and turns into a top signing we can easily give him a raise.

China1

CG, mustafi would not make that Leicester team in a million years, though it doesn’t surprise me that only you would think the contrary

Ishola70

Malcom could do better in a faster league like EPL.

Would definitely take that chance on him as others have said.

If Arsenal did get in Malcom and Zaha with Auba uptop that would terrify opposing defences for sure.

Would be nice though to get in a midfielder that supplies them quickly enough as well. Guendouzi could be capable of that.

Marko

Both 22 and one did enough to earn his big money move before the other. So what makes him better??

Just better consistency. Malcom 27 goals 18 assists since coming to Europe while Neres has got 29 goals and 32 assists in less time and appearences. His overall game just seems better too more dynamic. He could play left and right wing while Malcom seems like he can only do the right.

China1

I don’t think arsenal are spending over 80m on two wingers in a single window

36m for Malcolm is solid business tho. Unless Zaha can get his transfer fee halved with bad behavior I don’t think his signing is a serious rumour

Marko

“The transfer market is open until Sept. 2.

Ours closes August 8th. We can’t afford to wait for any dominos to fall unfortunately

I have to admit I’m not really that interested in Neres, he strikes me as a move to Everton, fail to hack the EPL and end up at Milan or Inter type That’s unfair. Everton aren’t a big club and plenty of players who go there struggle with getting out or getting better. Anyone who thinks mustafi isn’t a car crash defender doesn’t understand defense It’s this simple. It doesn’t matter that he’s hard working, reasonably strong, relatively quick, quite tough and a bit of a battler. It doesn’t matter that he sometimes picks a decent pass and also can charge forwards and get back. It doesn’t matter if he plays pretty well for 80 minutes if most games. It matters that in 90% of games he will make between one and three catastrophic errors near his own goal. Defense is judged differently from any other position in this sense. If our summer ended up being Zaha, Malcom, Tierney and then Saliba signed to join next summer it would actually be somewhat reminiscent of Klopp’s progress with Liverpool.

If the signings worked Arsenal would be a serious attacking threat whilst still being very defensively susceptible.

A problem that the club would then seek to address in the follow window with the arrival of Saliba and likely more defensive signings if players like Holding/Mavropanos etc having stepped up.

Emiratesstroller

I am glad to see that the club has apparently promoted both Willock and Nkietah to first team squad according to Jeorge Bird a usually reliable source on youth matters.

Leedsgunner

“Mustafi is not the worst defender in the world”

This is a moot point. No one is saying he is the worse defender in the world, the point is he is the worst defender in the first team consistent during his stay at the club, that’s why he needs replacing.

Marc

Marko

If that’s right and it’s a genuine rumour I’d go for it. Actually having a decent outlet would take some pressure off of the defence.

Leedsgunner

TheBayingMob

“Someone that interviews for the job, you know, best candidate wins like the old days”

Didn’t Dick Emery interview for the role?

I thought he did and that he was awesome that’s why it was slightly left field.

Also didn’t that yank at Fulham interview for that job? They chose him over Giggs because he had the best PowerPoint presentation on his vision for the club.

He failed miserably and it’s looking like Arsenal’s Spanish Alan Partridge isn’t that far behind!

Marko

I also think Neres has a higher ceiling than Malcom too. But at the end of the day Neres is likely to cost a tonne of money while Malcom can be gotten on loan. He’s not even necessarily the problem the problem for me is going to be paying a stupid amount for Zaha instead of someone like Neres and not Malcom on loan and possibly ending up costing 36 million. That deal seems reasonable. 50-60 million for Zaha is not

Cesc Appeal

‘Actually having a decent outlet would take some pressure off of the defence.’ This is exactly it. The opposition instantly become more cautious if they look at the Arsenal team sheet and see serious pace and ball carrying ability out wide. Right now you look at Arsenal’s side and you think it’s all slow and plodding aside from Aubameyang. There’s no physicality and there’s no pace, so sit up on them, press them and attack with relative impunity. Lose the ball against Arsenal with Bellerin, Tierney, Zaha, Malcom out wide…that stops and makes you think. Not to mention more balanced… Read more »
