Arsenal fans going through the meat grinder today.
Spurs are about the drop £70m on Ndombele, one of the best young midfielders in the world. United have landed Waan Bissaka for £50m. TEARS ALL OVER THE STATION FLOOR.
Meanwhile, David Ornstein has Arsenal out here contemplating selling Auba to find Wilfried Zaha (Palace trying to remove his sell on clause whilst negotiating with United), whilst also chasing Saliba and Tierney.
I’m not that fussed about losing Auba, he’s a very well paid 29-year old I’m not sure we have the luxury of having at this stage of our decline, certainly not if we’re going to have to up his salary. However, those goals are going to need to come from somewhere and it’s a huge ask to expect Zaha to double his output this season. Or are we thinking about giving Eddie a more senior role?
Unless the manager thinks the whole system lacked a good wide player, which will make the entire team score more goals. I mean, he could think that catching X on the overlap just needs better parts… in that case, I really am worried.
It’s frustrating to read around some of the Arsenal accounts trying to find reasons as to our decline when it’s been staring them in the face for years.
No club in the world has consistently made more bad decisions than Arsenal over the past 5 years.
We were way ahead of Spurs and Liverpool 5 years and we’ve blown our lead by giving £350m to a busted manager who spent it in a half-arsed way, we’ve given contracts to players that didn’t deserve them, we hoarded players and lost them for nothing, failed to give actual talent deals quick enough, refused to move our wage bill to one that was more meritocratic, gave Wenger a new deal despite him being on life support, sacked him and spent £17m to undo the mistake, then doubled down on our mistake by hiring in a head coach that has managed to make the whole scenario worse.
It’s even starting to look like we’ve blown a whole summer waiting for Edu to arrive at the club.
We don’t stop doing making the wrong moves.
Still, the one thing you can take from all of this… success isn’t permanent. Things can south pretty quickly in world football. They can also move north pretty quickly.
If Edu comes in and he’s made of the sort of stuff I have heard he is, then we might be capable of making a climb back to the top.
We need a vision, a footballing philosophy and someone that is going to hold people accountable for delivering. There needs to be a proper plan in place. Football shouldn’t be that complicated. It always has and always will start with hiring in great people. Your structure means fuck all if there are talent holes in it. Currently, we look like the aftermath of a drive-by shooting.
This season is already setting up in mediocre fashion. Europe is waiting to see what happens with our dross, so they’ll likely be with us at the start of the season. We are struggling to push deals for our targets over the line. There seems to be no hope of moving on Ozil. It’s also looking unlikely that we’ll be adding any sort of volume to the setup. 3-4 players max, with the rest being made up with internal promotions and return loanees.
… but there’s still time to make things happen. So don’t lose faith yet. But do realise this, we are in another transition year, because Edu is going to come in with new ideas and we’re most likely going to see what peak-Emery looks like… it won’t be pretty.
Let’s just hope the next manager has some really talented kids to work with. Let’s hope some of the youth step up when given a chance this season. Let’s hope Freddie can offer up a little bit of something special. Let’s hope season two of Matteo and LT is the next level.
The most important signing will be Edu. If we’ve blown that move, we are heading into longterm irrelevance as meteor-like speed. He really has to bring the goods and he has to be utterly ruthless in implementing his ideas.
Right, that’s me done, see you in the comments x
Cesc- Yep .. I know.. we have needs all over the park… But if the middle of your formation is a giant donut hole.. then I just can’t see it working.. That’s why I keep going on about getting rid of some of these midfield players.. and I haven’t heard about any movement. Not even Elneny . All you have to do is imagine what an Isco and a Kroos would look like in the middle of our formation instead of Ozil and Xhaka and you get a better idea. (Just an example people.. I don’t think that’s happening.) If… Read more »
“You know the problems, how about some solutions? Imaginative ones, not the same old, same old.” Well firstly don’t over complicate things – i.e. when in a hole stop digging. Nostalgia has no place when selecting a manager and how many times have we seen clubs bring in managers because “he was a great player for us”, “he knows the fabric of the club”. It’s all bollocks, you select a manager based of his managerial ability / track record. The number of times a manager has gone from zero to wow in one step is minuscule. I’m afraid you’re going… Read more »
How about sell none of our strikers who are both really good.
Buy a winger
A proper mobile midfielder
2 centre backs
A left back
Then add a few of our kids and we are good to go
Hopefully people start coming in early July
I would have sold all the dross by now though for sure
Marc. “What happens when you sell auba and laca gets injured”. Are you kidding dude . Obviously everyone would love to have 2 world class strikers but not everyone or anyone can afford that. Even the best in the world dont have the privilege of having two top quality strikers.Barca only have Suarez,Real madrid only had Benzema (until this upcoming season),Bayern only have Lewandowski,Liverpool only have Firmino( Well they also have DIVOCK LEGEND ORIGI so thats that.) .Point is ,if the best in the world cant afford/have the privilege to have two world class CF why does a team in… Read more »
Paul Merson as Arsenal manager…I can only assume that the person who suggested that is a fucking imbecile
Elmo I know, when you look round the teams we’re competing with they all have more than one goal option with the exception of Chelsea who have all sorts of issues. The rational of selling a top player to strengthen the team does work – what’s being missed on this occasion is the money we’re talking about for Auba – £75 million ish – if it was £150 million it’d be another story – but £75 won’t even get Zaha (who I’m not keen on anyway) with what they’re selling the LB for. I’d be happy to bet you a… Read more »

I dont beleive chelsea’s midfield outscored our midfield last season in the PL . Honestly i can only remember jorginho’s goal last season from the chelsea camp. Some numbers would be nice .And dont count the EL stats in it.As Emery rotated a lot whil Sarri didnt rotate as much.
Wasi Oh dear. ManU – Sanchez (OK it’s gone pear shaped with him but he’s capable of getting goals), Rashford, Lukaku. City – not even going to bother listing all of their players. Liverpool – Salah, Firmino, Mane and Sturridge (OK he’s sick note but he can score as well) Spud’s – Kane and Son. You mentioned Madrid – well selling Ronaldo hasn’t helped but let’s see who they line up with next season, plus Bale etc. Barca – Er some bloke called Messi. All of these teams have options that will at least give you some back up. We’d… Read more »
Torreira: “Nobody from AC Milan has got in touch with me, today I’m in the Premier and happy to be part of the
@Arsenal
. It cost me the adaptation, it’s not easy, but I only think about that team. I’m happy to be there.”
Marko
I get the feeling englandsbest is about 13.
Marc I don’t care if he just got out of a coma. Suggesting Merson as manager is dumb as hell on so many levels
Marko
Everyone keeps mentioning the rumours ramping up – all I’m seeing is regurgitated quotes and click bait.
I think Torreira made an off hand honest comment in an interview and the press is pushing it because Arsenal fans are setting their heads on fire over it.
Milan do not have the money to buy him. If someone starts being linked for £70 million then I’ll pay attention – till then what ever.
Marko
The coma couldn’t have happened – he would have been declared brain dead.
As far as I’m concerned the Torreira stuff should be put to bed. They can’t afford him and it doesn’t look like he’s interested in a move. Case closed. Move onto Xhaka please
Marko
We could lock Xhaka in a room with englandsbest for a couple of hours – if he doesn’t top himself (we should get some sort of insurance pay-out) he’ll soon ask for a transfer.
Marko
“Paul Merson as Arsenal manager…I can only assume that the person who suggested that is a fucking imbecile”
Strange that as I always regarded you as the Paul Merson of Le Grove..
Never has a decent word to say about our players or previous manager , totally negative towards the club ….moan ,moan & moan a bit more ….you and Merse are 2 of a kind.
Marc ohh i thought mane, salah, messi are counted as wingers and not Center forwards. And as you mentioned they will give some backup if their no.9 is injured. But the point is even when their no.9 is up and about they will be playing in the starting XI’s because guess what these players are wingers, wide forwards, inside forwards and not CFs . Whereas when Emery plays his favourite 4-3-3 he has to bench one of auba and laca which is not the case for 1. Liverpool -when firmino plays ,salah and mane also plays 2. Barca- When Saurez plays Messi also plays 3 Tottenham… Read more »
HL What so few people on here realise is that deals are done and not announced for legal or financial reasons. Edu is under contract to the Brazilian FA in the middle of a very big competition. Obviously they don’t want him announced as out TD until his duties are done . Martinelli is signed but not announced yet. The deal for Sokratis was done several weeks before it was announced. Kolasinac was tied up weeks before it was announced . Usually this is for financial reasons but in publicly quoted companies it can be sensitive information which needs to… Read more »
Life is never exactly black or white. I agree with Pedro partially. Last year the club put paper over the cracks and gambled to get back into Champions League. We failed. Now we have wasted one year of rebuild. The team has no identity. We didn’t know where the team is heading I hope the club should plan for the future and establish a plan of rebuild and then sign players accordingly.
Wasi
I’ve said repeatedly we need some width but selling Auba is crazy.
All of those “wide forwards” can provide goals as back up and some of them score good numbers. Even with Zaha we’d struggle if we lost Laca.
Zaha is nowhere near elite yet – Sterling is at that level you think Zaha is as good?
Henry
How dare you come on here and say something positive about Arsenal. Positive comments are only allowed about other clubs and are actually encouraged about the Spud’s.
Pierre coming from Ozil’s gimp I’ll take anything you say very very seriously
Pedro Henry’s comment about the most stupid comment he’s ever seen on a blog made me think – you should do an annual (it’s summer so fuck all else to talk about) comments section awards. Award for 4th place – DM Award for being able to turn any conversation into being about why Ozil is the greatest player ever – Pierre Award for telling the time – CG Award for managing to get constantly banned and not learning from it – Bamford. A most disturbing image – not that you’d be surprised if it were true though.
Panic is starting to set in on Le Grove through lack of signings or players !saving the club . All seems rather similar to the last 12 years doesn’t it… An analogy of Arsenal’s situation in the transfer market would be, 2 people are in a supermarket , one has unlimited funds so can buy whatever they like and one has to be a little more select and careful due to limited funds. The one with unlimited funds can zoom around the shop picking up anything they fancy without checking the price , choosing the best and most expensive products… Read more »
Marc Agreed selling our golden boot winner is crazy. But for a club in a state as ours its definitely not that crazy. You see you gotta add the 2 and 2. I would generally agree with your point – there is one small problem with it -Xhaka and Mustafi for a combined £70 million.
What difference would it make to this summer if we could unload them for cost?
I will judge the ‘new modern set up’ on whether they manage to offload Iwobi, Xhaka and Mustafi – the 3 biggest liabilities in our team. Things don’t look promising though.
The 2 marc/ks win the dumb and dumber award
Wasi
Firstly Zaha will be approaching 27 by the time the season kicks off – potential is for younger players. Secondly we’re not going to get that much for Auba, 22 goals gone for £70 million.
We have other players we can sell and avoid over priced English mediocrity at all costs.
Pierre
I cracked a joke (wasn’t meant to be hysterical) – you attempted an insult.
You really need to get over this fetish for Ozil.
However shite you might think Arsenal are, they are not England cricket, and so we are back to Le Grove after a Footy World Cup levels of hype and expectation goes up in smoke … at least we are used to it by now
MidWest The midfield has been a problem for years. The issue is the personnel we’ve got just have no semblance of balance. Xhaka and Ozil are such lopsided players with glaring issues which means if they play you cannot have any balance even if the other midfielder is Superman. I’m in favour of going about this the Liverpool way, just a 3 man midfield with tenacious, physical, mobile players even if it seems a little less than inspiring in terms of technical ability. I do think this season (or at least pre-season) we will see Bielik given a go at… Read more »

Not sure how highly Emery rates Iwobi – that one is hard to tell but I really hope that you’re wrong about Xhaka – I do however have a sinking feeling that what you say may be the case.
Spurs played the waiting game game on stadium , manager right …
paying dividends …
We ducked up the move big time. We have literally no benefits of the big oval concrete rather tired looking stadium.
Skint,
Not a top team like the promise was,..
A manager who spilts fans.
100 yards not a metre behind spurs.
Blame wenger, blame Stan..
Most of all blame arsenal….
Pierre
I was making some light hearted banter (something I really think the site needs at the moment?) – you’ve done this before tried to pin something on me / make an insult that doesn’t stick.
You’re a senile old cunt – I would think with your remaining, very limited time you’d have something better to do. You must have at least one Ozil picture that isn’t cum stained yet.
The dammned point her is we are still debating the same issues we were 10 year ago.
The club needs a major injection of something not just money…
The vibe from the club is dead, I ain’t had a worse feedback pre season since1978 after the ipswich loss….
Them days you heard nowt ,
This is worse ,
Be interesting to see how man6 didn’t renew there season tickets.
Marc The window when we signed Xhaka,Mustafi and Perez was very poor value for money . City, Chelsea and United over the years have all made very poor signings but due to their unlimited funds it hasn’t hurt their respective clubs as much as when clubs like Arsenal ,Tottenham and Liverpool make mistakes. Looking back, Tottenham wasted the bale money and Liverpool wasted the Suarez money so it is much more dIfficult for clubs like Arsenal , Tottenham and Liverpool compete with the top spenders …..they can’t afford mistakes , they get one chance to get it right whereas city,… Read more »

Palace are quoting £50 million for a 21 year old LB and you think “but if we can get him for arounf 55-60 that would be a fair price”
They’re going to want £70 – £80 million.
Give it up. Better players out there for less.
Pierre
I agree with you in part – where we’ve fucked up is the wages so we can’t get these players off the books or at least it’s bloody difficult.
I would also say I don’t think Chelsea have Abramovich’s blank cheque book anymore.
Marc
I disagree we need to sell .
Pea is good but think we could get better for less.
We need to bring down the average age of 5he squad.
It ain’t just the summer that ain’t sunny this preseason
Pierre Its pretty clear Emery rates iwobi and xhaka. Especially Xhaka. When Emery was appointed the club gave Xhaka a new deal when nearly the whole fan base was hating on Xhaka and he had 3 or 4 years still to go on his contract. That was a move by Emery. And next year he is gonna appoint Xhaka as captain. To be fair to Xhaka he has upped his game since he moved to Arsenal and if he can cut out the costly mistakes he’d make for a decent midfielder. But definitely not good enough to be our captain he is… Read more »

Tue above was for marc .

FYI wan bissaka is a RB and i know that Zaha wont be available for 55-60 im just saying its a fair price and that id rather sign 2,3 up and coming players like Under from the Auba money.

I agree , in his latter years Wenger has no idea how to use the transfer market…
Chelsea taking a risk with Lampard. Need we have done same with Arteta? Between him and Emery, Yes. Emery was finished product with nothing to write home about. The risk on Arteta may or may not pay off, but worth taking.
Palace need a right back with wassup moving to manure. Offer them chambers or jenkinson and 55 million. Zaha doesn’t need to be the second coming of Bobby Pires he just needs to be better than what we have, which he is. Miki and Iwobi got 9 league goals between them last season. Zaha will top that on his own. He will also create more for laca and Auba. Torriera isn’t going anywhere especially to ac who don’t have a pot to piss in. I’m more worried about getting the defence sorted. Tierney needs tying up and then onto a… Read more »
55 million? Listen they just sold their RB for 50 million no way way they sell their best player for more or less the same price. Not to mention we ain’t paying that much for anyone and most importantly they are far better players than Zaha out there for the same and for less money. Big no from me.
Marc
I asked if you had any solutions. What you gave me were criticisms of other people’s ideas and a range of platitudes:
‘don’t over-complicate things’
‘nostalgia has no place’
‘have some patience’
‘(no) wave of a wand’
Those are not solutions.
Try some creative thinking.
Imagine you are manager, no transfer money, a deficiient overpaid squad – you know the problems.
Now tell us in practical terms what you would do right now, this summer.
Pierre
Sometimes there’s a third person in that supermarket.
You know, the one that is so frugal that he would only look and occasionally fake to buy a product. He then decides to go back home and waste all the money he could have spent on the quality produce on utter crap from the local one pound shop instead.
I wonder who that could be?
Grabs
I think you just about have it spot on in your last post.
Graham
You ?
If we want Zaha, it will cost us £70m.
I’ll give a tenner.
Pierre
You’re not a natural comedian are you😴
I think if we can’t sell some of these players we need to try and add them into deals.
Look at what other teams are looking to buy and see if they have anything that improves us. Then we can add them into the deal.
I know it’s not that easy as our player might not want to go, but we have to try and shift them on some how.
Rumour Arsenal are going after Vanheusden, another young CB. Looks like bad news for Mavropanos given that would be another young CB added. Makes sense going forward, Kozz is nearing retirement, Sokratis is 31 and Mustafi is a twat. If Mavropanos is not rated it leaves Holding as the future of the defence alone. A lot of the links, Saliba,Vanheusden, Schubert, Tierney, Martinelli, Szoboszlai, Bilel Hassaini, Reinier etc make it seem like this a hard reset. The 3 players I would like to see at The Arsenal next season are
Zaha
Nzonzi
Tyrone Mings
Zaha ,because he will transform the team away from home.
Nzonzi, I know he is not everyone’s cup of tea on here but I think he is exactly what we need sitting in front of the defence…
Mings has everything a central defender needs theses days , tough , physical , good on the ball and knows the English game, definitely worth the risk for around 20 million.
In talking about the next manager I used the word ‘inspirational’ deliberately. Does anybody disagree that is what the Club lacks? Inspiration? Okay, I may have pushed a little too far with Paul Merson. but no one can deny that he has a great passion for the Club. When it comes to matters I care about, that counts most of all to me.
