Does Torreira to Milan make sense?

by & filed under News Review.

Well, well, well… the ‘YOU TOOK THAT OUT OF CONTEXT’ police back-peddling hard as the Lucas T rumours kick it up another gear… again.

Of all the players I was hoping we’d ditch this summer, I have to be honest, he wasn’t up there… but the rumours keep persisting with a slightly different twist on them.

Now, we do have to remember, he came out in the press and said everything about England is shite. Hard to brush that under the carpet, whichever internet translator you use. There’s a history of South American’s not quite liking the vibes in the UK, and right now, he’s in the shop window of The Copa America. All these rumours have started for a reason, and my take is they’re there to make sure scouts are paying attention to him over the next month.

Question here is this: the second half of the season fade we saw from LT, is that just a first season thing? Or is it something deeper. He’s a very small player that lacks power, he’s not exactly built for war like Kante, is he? Mesut Ozil always fades in the second half of the season because he’s not fit enough for the league. Is there a chance that’s LT? Just playing devil’s advocate here…

Whatever the deal is, it’s not good news that over a month into the close season, the hottest exit rumour out of the club is a player we all think is a bit of a future star.

As I said a couple of weeks ago, I think we have a very big problem mounting. Everyone in Europe knows who we want to sell. Xhaka, Ozil, Kola and Mustafi are all very well paid players, and it’s pretty clear that Arsenal are VERY keen to move them on. We have absolutely no leverage. Why would anyone go big now? Wait until we’re desperate to move them on at the end of the transfer window and see if you can nab a deal.

It’s a horrible thing to have to write, but be honest, you’d bet your house that all 4 of those players will be lining up in preseason this summer in that sweet Adidas training gear. That is going to be VERY disruptive if Emery dropped 1 out of 5 stars in their end of season reviews.

I’d like to think that we’re going to have some good news on the player front by preseason, but even that side of things appears to be moving slowly. My hope here is that we’re getting hard balled by clubs hoping to start a bidding war for their players. Celtic certainly appear to be quite firm about not losing another great player for fuck all. Maybe that’s the same across the board? Maybe small clubs are waiting to see where the first £200m signing goes before pricing their players?

I’d heard from a good place that the Zaha deal was very close with the player before the Europa League Final, the question is whether we’re still able to play in price ranges like that now we’re back in the poverty cup again.

Rumours elsewhere appear to be the same stories recycled. Saliba for £30m. Carrasco if he can escape. Whatever is going on, it’s a slow summer so far and it’s very hard not to fall into the doom trap thinking that if you don’t have the right people in place, it’s very hard to make the right decisions.

Also worth noting that almost no journalist is good with transfer rumours, so all these muppets on twitter highlighting great sources don’t know what they’re talking about. The whole transfer game is about deceit. Clubs try to move players on and attract buyers via the press. Agents constantly gas to anyone that will listen. Journalists and bloggers alike are desperate for hits so will go big without checking the veracity of the rumours. Even players are part of the game.

You can also have the most elite piece of information you can imagine… then BANG, you look like an idiot because a manager had a change of heart.

It’s a minefield out there… but one thing is for sure, it’s not good news when you’re a month into a rebuild and no one has been bought or sold.

Right, see you in the comments.

Accept on the face of it the club appear to be doing nothing?or dragging their heels? All this talk of spunking money here & there is optimistic at best.

“Yes they have been inherited a bad situation, but conversely they have also worked very hard to make it worse.”

And you will have to explain this to me pls

How exactly have they made it worse? When Raul and Emery got here we were a Europa league team with a champions league wage bill…now we are still a Europa league team with a champions league wage bill…if anything we are standing still but i can’t see how we are worse off than a year ago

Have you considered the possibility it is near impossible to move dud players who are paid 350k weekly. We have to pay off their contracts to moves them on, money we certainly don’t have.
I think it’s disingenuous to just say people are paid lots of money to move them out because that implies there’s some magical tool to use.
Truth is that it will take 1-2 seasons to let out the toxins from this club.

    @CG

Raul may well have been part of the Ozil deal and Wenger may well not have been. I don’t know what went on behind the closed doors.

What we do know for absolute certainty though was that Gazidis was the man in overall charge who signed it off. He had the power to veto it and he didn’t.

Wenger still gets lumped in with it though because he’s the guy that spent FIVE MILLION QUID on Park Chu-Young.

Jeez, i thought i was the only one who wasn’t very comfortable with how things are panning out. This summer especially has felt like any other you can name from years back. As receding states, we’re standing still which is exactly what we shouldn’t be doing in our state.

If Liverpool can seel Solanke and Jordan Ibe, i see no reason why we can’t ship out some of our underperformers even if its for a lower fee but at least, we’ll be getting their wages off the bill.

Can’t tell me if Xhaka or El neny or Jenkinson or Mustafi were told they were not part of our plans going forward that their agents wouldn’t be looking to get them deals elsewhere.

Dunno maybe I’m a bit naive on these things but we seem to be the only club who has one excuse or the other shipping our underperforming players.

CBs better and cheaper than Saliba (Are also first-team ready):

    Lars Lukas Mai – Bayern
    Jules Koundé – Bordeaux
    Boubacar Kamara – Marseille
    Diogo Leite – Porto
    Dayot Upamecano – Leipzig

    Good luck with that.
There’s no sane person who thinks Emery has made Arsenal worse. Has he solved the problems overnight?…certainly not but make us worse?

“Can’t tell me if Xhaka or El neny or Jenkinson or Mustafi were told they were not part of our plans going forward that their agents wouldn’t be looking to get them deals elsewhere.”

I don’t think Xhaka has been told this Batistuta, i really think Emery rates him, draw your conclusions from that. Those who think Xhaka will not be here are in for a shock, there is a 90% chance he will be playing for Arsenal next season.

As for Mustafi,Elneny and Jenkinson….i believe these players will not be Arsenal players come the start of next season. Don’t ask me where my belief comes from, just a gut feeling.

Dissenter the way he phrases it makes it all the more dishonest

“but conversely they have also worked very hard to make it worse.”

I mean how can you say something like that with a straight face?? What were they supposed to do about player nobody wants?? Players most of them told us were good enough and all we lacked was the manger of Rennes or Lille. Now he wants them sold.

  11. Nelson

Raul should try to negotiate a split payment for Saliba. Since they want him back for a year, we’ll withhold 80% of the payment until next year. Or better still, we’ll give them one of those players we try to sell.

  12. Dissenter

There’s a logical explanation as to why we can’t announce even the minor deals.

It seems we have to wait until after the new kit deal becomes effective on July 1st because if we roll out photo shoots now, it will be with the outgoing Puma kit.

I suspect that minor deals like Martinelli will be announced very quickly after Adidas deal formally starts.

  13. KAY Boss

Knoxville, to add to your list is Joseph Aidoo of Genk. Solid defender. Voted player of the year by Genk.
Watched him a couple of times and I was impressed.
    Kasim Nuhu Adams of Hoffeiheim.
Both players young, technical and physically imposing.
Since no deal yet, we may as well discuss player of the unknown that have the potential to be better than what we currently parade on the pitch.

“Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has told football.london in an exclusive interview that Arsenal should ‘break the bank’ in their bid to land Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha.

“I would say Arsenal need to break the bank for Zaha. He’s got a proven track record in the Premier League. He can hit the ground running.

“He would be an excellent addition to Unai Emery’s squad and boost their attacking options. He would also create space for [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Alex] Lacazette to run into in dangerous areas

“He can carry the ball in transition and is a dangerous player. He would be my preferred option. He’s strong, he’s fast. He would settle in straight away.

“He can play wide left, wide right, through the centre and he’s still young at 26 years of age.

“He would be my man for the club to target first and foremost as an attacking option. I think he would be a superb addition to the squad. Yes he won’t come cheap but the fee would be paid in instalments so it wouldn’t necessarily be £60m up front.”

It’s difficult to break the culture that seeped in over 10 years in one season.
It’s certainly not easy to sell overpaid players who are determined to run down their contracts, players that other clubs aren’t lining up to sign.

I was just thinking, If Emery walked away right now after a spat with the owner or board, are we really that attractive to top managers.

The Arsenal project is a mid level job with the obvious squad troubles we have and low transfer budget.
6 million a year is no longer a top manager’s salary [for the ones that like to bang that old ‘who wouldn’t want to be paid 6 million line’. Even Mike Ashley pays 5.5 million. Top managers earn in excess of 12-15 million now.

  18. siddharth14

It seems Arsenal are winning the race for Saliba with the much le-grove criticized back on loan for a year to the parent club.

I find the opposition to this deal a bit OTT. For all the talk of 26m, i’m sure it is including added bonuses in the form of minimum appearances, goals conceded, cups won, matches won etc. And it’s not like we are going to make a lump-sum payment here. With the parent club insisting on one year loan, i’m sure we have leveraged this request by bringing down the overall fee or the amount to be paid upfront.

Secondly, the persons in charge are not buffoons to overlook the fact that we need a good central defender pronto. Is it not possible that perhaps Arsenal might be using money from possible player sales to finance the upfront payment.

Yes, if the club at the end of the window have made only Saliba as a defensive purchase then the supporters have every right to question the Club and the Management.

People are expecting our scouts and recruitment setup to identify such players when they are almost under the radar so that we can buy them for under 10m. With the way football is operating at the moment, it is not easy to play that game. The other teams are also working 24/7 on getting the best upcoming players before anyone. Lastly, for all the potential of a player, it is a massive risk on the prices being generally quoted. But we have to make the jump and hope for the best.

Even with a 20-30% success rate with that approach, we can continue to improve our financial strength from year to year and continue to grow as a team.

We all have been tired of the old approach under Wenger and that fraud Gazidis. Arsenal here are attempting to do something radical. Lets appreciate that.

  20. Leftsidesanch

Indeed, I think we’ll see a ramp up in activity from next week, or what we’ll find is that we have been working this whole time but pressed pause on announcements until we could show off players in a shiny new kit.

Spuds being able to put in a record bid so quickly after moving into a new stadium shows just how incompetent our lot were.

At the end of the day, if you’re fed a sob story for long enough, you’ll eventually start to believe it’s true. Actually, let me reword that. If your told to trust and believe in something by someone, don’t be dopey enough to sit back and say “ok, I’ll buy that. I believe you”

The Saliba deal makes a lot of sense because we have an aging defense.

Kevin Campbell on Zaha “He can hit the ground running”

I’ve seen Zaha play. He’s much more versatile than that. He can hit the ground in slow motion, sprinting, sideways, from a stiff breeze or even just a look sometimes. Let’s be honest, if Tom Daley is ever looking for a new partner for the synchro competition, Zaha’s got to be a candidate!

  24. Graham62

Arsenal fans need a “feel good” factor to occur.

    I agree with Kevin Campbell.

Just would like to point out as well that Spurs didn’t spend a penny in the previous two transfer windows and have earned over £88million alone just from their Champions League exploits this season gone by.

Obviously that’s a contract signed before he became prominent, but it really makes you think about the likes of Jenks being handed £50k pw long-term contracts years ago, and Guendouzi being handed above average PL money while still 19.

  29. Valentin

    Receding,

Again you rant about things I did not write.
I have never said that last summer we tried to sell Xhaka. Nowhere did I mention Chelsea and Cahill! I never said that I wanted untalented players but young and hungry. It’s a given that I want talented player at Arsenal.

I want hungry players, because I want players with the right attitude. Motivated rather spoilt. You are one of those who scream at Özil for his so called laziness, so you should be wanted more players with the right attitude. Talent is nothing without self motivation. Even at Manchester City and Liverpool, not every position is populated with world class talent. Delph, Henderson, Milner are not world class player. What they are is model pro, who are hungry for success. That is important and so is physical characteristics in specific positions. I would take a slightly less talented player, but with better mobility and more dynanysm player over Xhaka.

In previous posts, I gave a list CBs who were available on loan or for purchase. They did not need to be world class, just better than Mustafi and Lichsteiner.

This summer instead of actively trying to offload unwanted players, Arsenal is now quoting ridiculous price when clubs are enquiring about these players. Respected club owners have publicly stated that Arsenal have quoted them £60 millions for Xhaka and £10 millions for Koscielny. The most likely result of such stupid strategy is that those players will remain here, or will be sold at a higher discount the last week/day of the TW. That would seriously impede any attempt to rebuild the club.

You are one of the few who still refuse to acknowledge that Emery prioritised the Europa League at the tail end of the league. He underestimated lower down teams and it backfired.

  30. Receding Hairline

“Respected club owners have publicly stated that Arsenal have quoted them £60 millions for Xhaka and £10 millions for Koscielny. ”

Can we have these quotes please?? I mean straight from the respected club owners.

“You are one of the few who still refuse to acknowledge that Emery prioritised the Europa League at the tail end of the league. He underestimated lower down teams and it backfired.”

How was this prioritization done?? By making three changes to the starting line up against Palace?? Changes enforced by suspensions and injuries ..we played a full strength team against Brighton.

The only one ranting on here is you sorry

United making a statement with the Bisaka purchase

That’s a potential world-class RB and that position sorted for them for years

while over at arsenal we’re still waiting for the end of tournements or July 1 before announcing Martinelli, lol

Lol,arsenal is fast becoming a stale joke that’s no longer funny, people don’t laugh at us anymore, they rather feel sorry for us.

  32. Receding Hairline

“I want hungry players, because I want players with the right attitude. Motivated rather spoilt.”

Spoilt by who?? What’s more motivating than playing for a big club in England on nice wages??

Why are our players not model pros?? Did they lose this professionalism under Emery?? Should changing three players from the starting line up against Palace at home be enough reason to lose the game??

“In previous posts, I gave a list CBs who were available on loan or for purchase”

Why list for purchase? we were not buying, that was made clear.

“They did not need to be world class, just better than Mustafi and Lichsteiner.”

Who says they were better these players you mentioned..you? I will pass on that seeing as you believe Osei-tutu of Bochum should be starting for Arsenal simply because he is a “natural right back”

“This summer instead of actively trying to offload unwanted players, ”

How do a club actively offload players on contract?? Many would like to know. Real Madrid have a few they want gone, Man City still have Mangala on their books. The motivation to leave has to also come from the player, you can agree a deal and the player fails to agree personal terms, happened with Jenkinson a while back

  33. Leftsidesanch

Lol,arsenal is fast becoming a stale joke that’s no longer funny, people don’t laugh at us anymore, they rather feel sorry for us.

Hate to break it you Vic, but our status as a “top end” football club diminished years ago, most perceive us as a joke. You even have fans from Celtic (salty perhaps) claiming they are a bigger club than Arsenal.

  34. Victorious

    Left
Really sad state of affairs we find ourselves, read some mug in the tabloid questioning if arsenal is a big enough a pull for fvcking Tierney.. What a joke

it’s been coming for years hasn’t it and we’re in real serious danger of falling away into obscurity until probably Kroenke decides to pack up and go

That said do you see the current management up to the task at all?

we spent a whole month bringing in DSuarez who was really a nothing signing now we’re painfully haggling for Tierney, Saliba(who we won’t have for next season)while our rivals make serious deals that could potentially end our top6 status next season

  35. Freddie Ljungberg

If we get Schubert, Saliba, Tierney and another young top class CB in we potentially won’t have to touch our defence or goalkeeping positions for ages outside maybe backup fullbacks. That would be such a huge difference from how the club has operated in the last decade+.

could be done for about 80m, offset by the 4m for Ospina, 4m for Bennacer and 30-40m for Mustafi/Chambers/Jenks, and the fact we’re most likely deferring the bulk of Salibas fee for next season.

add someone like Ziyech and Dominick to that and it’s the best window I can remember and still within budget if we can get some cash for Elneny and Mikhi.

There’s more to be done especially in CM but that would be a great start.

  36. Leftsidesanch

:Points of interest from Ornsteins piece:

    – Arsenal have a budget of around £45m this summer

    – Arsenal like Zaha, and he likes Arsenal but we wouldn’t be able to afford him without generating finance through player sales (i.e Aubameyang)

    – AC Milan have admiration for Torreira but the price makes this a non-starter and are focused on other targets (as pointed out by Marko)

    – Arsenal remain in talks over Tierney and Saliba

  37. Jamie

Respected owners have said they they inquired about the availability of Xhaka, Mustafi, Mkhi, and Ozil. Raul/Vinai/Emery all took a conference call and said the lot were for sale as a bundle for £1.

The respected owners then hung up the phone one by one.

Not much more Emery could do.

  38. Leftsidesanch

Something else to raise, that if we sign Tierney and Saliba, it’s going to cost more than £45million so unless that is the extent of our dealings without major player sales I would think that this figure is indeed, untrue.

  40. Marko

Seems some people are really struggling with the idea of getting rid of underperforming players on big contracts they think it should be easy in fact. Perfect example of the conundrum we find ourselves in is Atletico Madrid being interested in Xhaka and Llorente and instead of going for Xhaka then went for 24 year old Llorente who’s barely played the last 3 years. Fair to assume that his 25,000 a week wages had something to do with it. Even if Atletico doubled his wages it’d still be nearly half of what Xhaka earns now at Arsenal. Mustafi is another example. Why would anyone move for him when there’s cheaper and younger elsewhere. Kolasinac is virtually impossible to get rid of he’s on 120,000 a week. Basically the point is this idea of it being easy to ship some of these piles of shite away from Arsenal is shown not to be the case. Who knew it’d be tough to get rid of overpaid underperforming players?

  43. Valentin

    Receding,

The list that I gave a few weeks ago included one purchase that was within our TW budget. Barcelona bought a CB for 500k from Toulouse in January because he was in the last year of contract. 500k is Less than Suarez loan fee!

So like I said there were possibilities that Raul ignored. Again we are not talking of world class player, just player better than Mustafi and Lichsteiner.

  44. Leftsidesanch

    Vic

I have full reservations against our current management. Much has been made of our previous regime in bringing in a Kim Kalstrom who came to Arsenal with a broken back (LOLS all around). Our new management bringing in Suarez who was injured doesn’t fare much better (FACEPALMS all around).

I don’t think we sell well at all, and don’t think we will make enough of the changes that are required for Arsenal to be remotely competitive next season.

It is looking like a difficult one at the moment, so many other teams (with ambition) will see us as there for the taking. I’m not panicking about a lack of transfers because they will almost certainly come, but will it be sufficient? Remains to be seen.

All we needed was an additional point for CL football, and this club managed to screw that up, it would be unbelievable if this wasn’t Arsenal’s forte.

  45. Victorious

    FL

Schubert,Tierney, Saliba won’t get us anywhere next season,

we absolutely need about 6 first team players brought in to ensure we remain in top6 not a bunch of youngsters who wont scatch a surface for us next season

at this rate we might fall behind the likes of west ham,Liecester, Everton next season also dont help those clubs have better managers than us

  46. Leftsidesanch

I for one, would never be in favour of getting rid of Auba to sign Zaha. Their respective goal tallies for the last few years are as chalk and cheese as you’ll find in footy.

  47. Batistuta

Gonna be funny when we’re struggling away at Wolves again because our project youths haven’t properly adjusted and Mustafi is heading in own goals.

All on Emery from this point moving forward, he’s had the 1 year grace which most reasonable posters could afford him, if he doesn’t clear out underperforming players then he deserves whatever stick he gets next season

  48. Receding Hairline

Valentin this center back from Toulouse that Barcelona signed how do you know he is better than Mustafi?? Because Barca signed him? Same Barca that have the much talked about Denis Suarez on their books.

Jean Clair Todibo made around a dozen appearances for Toulouse before joining Barcelona. yes he is a prospect and yes he might turn out to be great and yes i agree with you those are the type of deals we should be making and at that fee.

But then you ignore certain aspects, how long have Barcelona been tracking him, when was first contact made, did we even know about him and if No is that Raul’s fault or the scouts at Arsenal.

Simply saying a player moved to Barcelona and he would have chosen Arsenal is not enough.

  49. Marko

Todibo? Todibo has made 12 senior appearences his whole career. Anyone trying to sell him as a viable option for last January needs to have their head examined. I can see it now in need of defensive reinforcements we bring in Todibo after 10 appearences for Toulouse and he does what exactly… Barcelona getting him for 500 k expect him to be loaned out for the next 4 years and be sold. So that’s Osei Tutu and Joe Willock should have started the Europa League final and we should have signed Todibo last January it was so obvious. Brilliant that

  50. Receding Hairline

” if he doesn’t clear out underperforming players then he deserves whatever stick he gets next season”

How does Emery affect this clear out??

Assassinations?? Contract terminations?? An Auction?? Subsidize their wages at new clubs through his own personal funds?? How does it become the responsibility of a coach with one year left on his deal to clear out players he met at a football club?? Player who will more likely than not outlast him at said club

You are pointing fingers at the wrong person.

And when he does bench the players to give youth a chance, Mavropranos against Palace, he is accused of desperation and throwing the game.

  51. Freddie Ljungberg

    Vic

Did you miss where I wanted us to sign another CB a CM/CAM and a RW?

of course a backup goalkeeper, a CB who won’t play with us next season and only one first team addition is not going to make much of a difference.

If we add those 3 and say, Upemecano, Ziyech and Dominick ( I’m only listing players we’ve been linked to btw) it would be a very good start to our rebuild.

First priority for me would be replacing Xhaka but it’s very quiet on that front so not getting my hopes up. Guessing we’re stuck with Ozil too so someone like Dominick makes sense.

Sell decently well and it’s doable for 50-60m net.

  52. Victorious

    Diss
Yh clubs do haggle over players and thats why its called negotiating except arsenal is really shit at it,tedious, irritating and notoriously slow when closing even the simplest of deals.. Both incomings and outgoing ls

I mean don’t you see a pattern here?

United have brought in 2 signings since we started talking to the french club for Saliba

  53. Marko

Simply saying a player moved to Barcelona and he would have chosen Arsenal is not enough.

Did he actually say that? Cause that’s weird cause when I mentioned how Wenger could have signed up Varane or Umtit or Rugani in the past he was adamant that it couldn’t be down that there was nothing Wenger could have done Barcelona and Madrid had already done the work there was no chance of convincing the player. Not surprising this is a guy who while crediting the signings of Jese and Krychowiak to Emery he made excuses for the signings of Mbappe and Neymar being someone else. What was it the president was responsible for Mbappe and Neymar was signed up before Emery got there. Emery was hired the summer before Neymar got there but apparently it took a year to negotiate for him therefore he was signed before Emery got there. This is what you’re dealing with

  54. Nelson

” Wilfried Zaha – Unai Emery will ask the Arsenal board to break the bank to sign Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha, who would be expected to cost around £55m (The Sun, June 24).

Lucas Vazquez – Unai Emery wants to bring the Real Madrid forward to the Emirates this summer (Don Balon, June 20).”

It seems that Emery prefers established players.

  55. Graham62

“Who knew it would be so hard to get rid of overpaid underperforming players?”

I think most of us did.

  56. Victorious

If we add those 3 and say, Upemecano, Ziyech and Dominick ( I’m only listing players we’ve been linked to btw) it would be a very good start to our rebuild”

Agree, these set of players could potentially make us competitive if not anything at least for top4,

Except the club hasnt given us any confidence up to now they’re capable of doing such deals

I mean going by our antecedent we just as easily if not likely bring in Tierney and Martnelli and wait for deadline day madness to put a bid for Carrasco/Fraser.that’s more like us

  57. Cesc Appeal

Ornstein confirms Arsenal want to sign Zaha and that Zaha wants to join Arsenal.

Obviously a hard deal to pull off but for Ornstein to hear at this stage Arsenal want it to happen means they will be trying to make it happen.

That would be a statement signing for the fan base.

Changes the dynamic of our attack completely. All about the price, but we do have players like Chambers I would think Palace might be interested in.

Arsenal apparently also stating they will not entertain any Milan offer below £50 Million for Torreira…spot on.

The deal for Saliba seems to be progressing well, loan back seems likely but news coming out of France that if Arsenal offer more St Etienne may do away with the loan.

  58. China1

How could we try and sign a player for 11m in January when we were technically unable to sign any players due to FFP by all accounts

  59. Marko

Ornstein also says that they’re looking for 80 million and we’d have to sell Aubameyang or Torreira to make it happen. If it was Torreira it still wouldn’t be enough. Anyway my point from the other day still stands anything over 30 million for Zaha and I’d just look elsewhere for younger and better. Even the kinder valuations of him I still wouldn’t pay it for him.

  60. Marko

Also again with the 45 million budget stuff. It’s basically gone with Tierney and Saliba. I just don’t see it

  61. NW9 gooner

You just cannot guarantee that a player from abroad will click in the PL. Mustafi was a World Cup winner and all of us were drooling over his signature. Same with Xhaka when everyone was saying that he was the DM we were missing. Kolasinac was in the team of the year in Germany . All of them have been disappointing.

  62. Receding Hairline

45m pounds upfront for Wan Bissaka, Palace not placing stock in any silly add on’s. Outrageous fee for the player though and i think it affects our Tierney negotiations. Anybody with a phone and internet access in Scotland now asking Celtic to demand a fee closer to the Bissaka fee

Trossard joins Brighton for 18m, i hope no one comes on here to whine we should have got him if he does well. I remember the consensus was that he isn’t good enough for us

    Spot On

Pretending they were all useless and bound to fail when we bought them doesn’t change that.

Every transfer carries a risk, we are just more forgiving if they are players we personally rate

  64. Freddie Ljungberg

    RH

it has already started in the press with Chris Sutton saying Celtic should demand a similar fee.

difference they seem to not grasp is that Tierney plays in a tin pot league whereas AWB is prem proven, also that no one else would have paid anywhere close to that fee except a desperate Man U.

  65. Valentin

    Receding,

Your argument was that there was nobody available during the winter transfer window. My point was that there were options available during the winter TW. Raul CHOSE to ignore those options in favour of a unnecessary deal. As he mentioned during an interview at the time, Emery would have been happy if we had signed one CB and if possible a winger. We ended up with no CB but a player who was not a winger either.

Any TD worth its salt knew about Todibo and the fact that he was refusing to sign a new contract with Toulouse.

In fact there was big articles in l’Equipe about him and about the recurring situation of young talented players refusing to sign their first big professional contract with their club if they feel that they have been undervalued.

  66. Jamie

    China1 –

Stan told Emery he would personally approve the spend if it meant we would land Todibo, but like I said earlier, the player would only enter into negotiations with Barca, so the deal was basically a non-starter. Emery didn’t even have a chance to discuss a staggered payment schedule in order to adhere to FFP regulations.

There’s a rumour that Mustafi was offered in part-exchange, but Mustafi himself rejected a move away from Arsenal. Said he was happy and settled in London.

Emery even offered to have a lengthy discussion with Mustafi about his weaknesses if he agreed to a move away, but Mustafi told Emery he didn’t have any weaknesses to his game, so a meeting would be pointless.

  67. China1

Dissenter but that’s not reasonable to use ozil as a case as if all our dross falls equally into that category

    -El neny is sellable
-Mikki is sellable at a low price
-Mustafi is sellable at a low price
    -Xhaka is sellable
-Kos is sellable at a low price
-Ozil probably isn’t unless we make him cost pennies and get lucky with the Chinese/Turks/parisiens etc

We are lamenting how there’s nothing to be done whilst utd flog lukaku for 65m to an average team in a pretty poor (football and financially speaking) league

We need to get past this woe is me idea that because we are shit and have been run a complete shambles that there’s not much we can do about it. This is a very arsenal idea of being passive and bad stuff happens to us rather than us being active protagonists in building the club we want

I’m not saying it’s easy as pie to do this, but what have we done? When arsenal make progress then they will earn some benefit of the doubt. But what progress are we making. Our club senior management are there with their hands on their hips shaking their heads and tutting at our misfortunes. Throw the fans a bone already

  68. Champagne Charlie

Xhaka earns 90k and at circa 40 mil and 26 years of age he’s not putting off Atlético on that basis. Pure conjecture.

    We sold:
    – Theo for 20 mil, aged 28, on 140k a week.
    – Coquelin for 12 mil, aged 26, on 50k a week.

Also, odd that no fuss should be made about incomings not happening because it’s early, the club can be getting deals done behind the scenes, laying foundations etc. But somehow none of that applies to outgoings, no, we’re stuck there because fuck the wages and fuck Wenger and Gazidis.

  69. Nelson

Does AST still exist? Now is the time for them to mobilize the season ticket holders to apply pressure on the board to act in this TW.

  70. Receding Hairline

“Any TD worth its salt knew about Todibo and the fact that he was refusing to sign a new contract with Toulouse.”

Who was our TD is January Valentin??

In fact have we ever had a TD??

  71. China1

Haha Jamie I’m sorry but that story doesn’t sound even a little bit realistic

Also if Stan was willing to throw 11m at emery to spend on a random unknown player I’m 100% certain he would’ve allowed him to spend it on another player instead of leaving him stuck with Suarez or nothing

  72. Leftsidesanch

Nelson theres nothing to suggest we aren’t acting though, so they will just rubbish any communication. I have a friend from uni who is part of the AST.

  73. Marko

Fair enough on Kolasinac and Mustafi but there was alarming bells on the signing of Xhaka. His card count prior to joining was an indication of his defensive troubles

  74. Victorious

Palace want 80M for Zaha? I mean after mugging off united by scooping 50M for Bissaka? What are they smoking up there? Or could it be they just take other clubbs for fools

Let them keep him,way more value in getting Ziyech or Chiesa.

We might as well try for Sane if we intend splurging that much on a winger.

  75. Batistuta

    Receeding

You seem to have an excuse lined up for every single criticism of either Emery or Arsenal as a whole.

So tell me who do we blame for anything really or are we still just going to keep blaming Gazidis and co and saying no one wants our players so we’ll just hold on to them till their contracts expires?

Isn’t it the job of the new guys whom are paid handsomely to sort out the mess they met because i really don’t understand this whole holding brief for them each time.

There’s a market for every single player out there, we just have to be committed to getting rid

  76. Jamie

    China1 –

Are you doubting my sources? Todibo was on everyone’s radar last Jan. Barca just got there first and made a fool of Emery.

Raul even called the player’s mum, and Edu (although not an employee of the club at the time) was set to fly to France to open negotiations on behalf of Arsenal, even though he was employed by someone else.

  77. Receding Hairline

China what is funny is that what Jamie is doing is flying right over your head

Jamie sits in on negotiations at Arsenal …he is the real ITK

He knows all the “respected club owners”

  78. CG

Surely if Arsenal stop this Tierney nonsense ( we have Sead K- who is better)

Forget this obscene Saliba deal … ( £28 million for a teenager!!! And you wait 12 months for him- if you are lucky)

Sell Torreira ( we have AMN – who is miles better) to Milan

We have the funds for Zaha……
    No excuses
And the player wants to join us.

  79. Valentin

    Marko,

Gaslighting somebody by lying, implying falsehood is not winning an argument.

Arsenal had no counter-arguments when Real Madrid sent Zidane the French icon who personally guaranteed to his parent that he would take care of Varane. Real Madrid also accepted to let him stay an extra year at his local club, so he could pass his baccalaureat. His parents wanted him to complete his education before pursuing a football career.

Also like I said, as a 17 years old Italian defender if Juventus comes to court you, you are unlikely to refuse them in favour of Arsenal. Rugani made the expected choice.

Wenger missed a lot of players by his feckled attitude and refusal to pay the market price, but for the ones that you mentioned he did not. External factors won the argument.

  80. China1

The club is always so soft on clubs and players too

Reminds me of the wenger days when we’d inquire about a player to sign and they’d say he’s not for sale and we’d be like OH WELL WE TRIED

Everyone has a price, we were just too passive and clueless to know when to push for it and be assertive and when to walk away

Same with our own players. If you tell xhaka and mustafi theyll be in the reserves next season they won’t stay if we accept an offer for them

These two are in their primes and are both active, hardworking players who try their best.not everyone is an ozil character.

  81. Receding Hairline

“You seem to have an excuse lined up for every single criticism of either Emery or Arsenal as a whole.”

Questions not excuses …learn to differentiate

You are yet to come up with workable solutions besides they are paid handsomely to sought it out.

Lets say we want Mustafi out, he is on say 80k a week, a club in Germany expresses interest, out of desperation we cave in and agree he goes for free even, the club now says due to their pay structure they can only pay Mustafi 35k a week and he says no thanks …what next??? How does Emery come into play here ?? How does he personally intervene to get rid??

  82. Marko

Xhaka earns 90k and at circa 40 mil and 26 years of age he’s not putting off Atlético on that basis. Pure conjecture.

I mean he literally put them off. Xhaka 26 90,000 a week and would cost between 30-40 million. Llorente 24 on 25,000 a week and cost them 40 million euros. Maybe they are working behind the scenes on getting rid of some players I assume it but it’s a very valid point to say that it’s not easy because we’ve got overpaid and underperforming players.

  83. Leftsidesanch

Surely if Arsenal stop this Tierney nonsense ( we have Sead K- who is better)

Goodness me, when will we not have to witness such writing

  84. Champagne Charlie

“I mean he literally put them off“

    You know this because……?

Or is it “literally” you talking your opinion into fact for the 3847293 time?

  85. Valentin

    Receding,

    Another excuse.

Raul confirmed himself that he was performing both role until an proper TD could be named.

If he can’t do it, then he should have delegated that task on a temporary basis.

  86. Batistuta

    Receeding

Again, if Emery tells the board or CEO or whoever is in charge that certain players are not part of his plans and they should get rid, there’s no way they wouldn’t find a way to get it done for him.

Again, why is it only hard for arsenal to sell players on high wages? How son other clubs do it? What’s with making selling players look like we’re bidding for Messi? And yes Raul and co are paid mega buck to get rid of said underperforming players and not me so it’s within their premise to do that.

Again, all you’re doing making excuse rather than “questions” if I’m being honest

  87. Victorious

Lol Sead K is actually a shit player, never seen a worse LB since Santos

Says so much about his ability that we’re going hard for another LB when there’re so much more important positions screaming for attention

  88. CG

    Left Side

    Barca want Sead K
They dont want the Crock Jock ….

    You know more than Barca.???

    Tierney wont Hack it England..
Just because he goes on mazy forward runs in their league ……it means nothing …..

He has never faced a Salah, Mane,Son, Vardy, Zaha Lukaku, or any top player in his life….( apart form some dead rubbers in the Cl)

    No ones in for him
Except our Numpties….( Raul and Emery)

  89. Marko

Exactly my point Val. When it comes to Varane or Umtit or Rugani there’s nothing to be done we literally couldn’t do any more to sign them before they joined Madrid/Barcelona/Juve and yet when it comes to Todibo joining Barcelona you think it’s so obvious and that we easily could have gotten him if we tried.

Also there’s gotta be a rule about you claiming falsehoods and calling others liars.

  90. NW9 gooner

Teraloon this is in reference to your post that we had 91 m in instalments payable- isn’t that a bit too much- 16-17 our sales covered our purchases – then we bought Auba and the purchases last year of roughly 67m – I think there is something wrong with the article you referred and we have more cash as Dissenter has been emphasising

  91. Receding Hairline

Batistuta i just want to know how it can be done

These players have contracts, they have not violated the terms of their contracts in anyway

It’s like the Gareth Bale situation at Madrid, Zidane has already made it clear he is not wanted yet what can they do??

Mangala at City, not wanted yet he is still there

Many players are not wanted at their clubs but when they stick to the terms of their deal there is very little you can do to force them out

What do you want really, Emery calling a press conference with a list of players he wants out?? Then what?? How does that help us??

  92. Receding Hairline

“Raul confirmed himself that he was performing both role until an proper TD could be named.”

Yes he was performing the role in a transfer window the club were looking to loan players. I am sure Raul has contacts still at Barca and knows how far gone that Todibo deal was. Many clubs missed that deal and the kid in question is still a prospect so dunno why were are spending the afternoon discussing Todibo

“If he can’t do it, then he should have delegated that task on a temporary basis.”

Maybe you should apply the post

  93. Marko

    You know this because……?

Because they signed Marcos Llorente for 40 million euros. Linked with Xhaka and Llorente chose Llorente. A 24 year old who played in about 30 odd games the last 3 years. You don’t think the wages and form played a part in their choice? Come on man you’re better than that (you’re definitely not)

  94. China1

I’m fairly sure you don’t have to limit mustafi to going on a free transfer to a club that can’t even afford 40k a week.

And lest we forget free transfer players usually get a sign on fee.

Arsenal are not the only club with shitty players on high salaries. Most clubs manage it one way or another without running the contract out entirely

And yes, our senior management are explicitly paid countless millions between them to solve such problems. Maybe they can’t fix everything but so far this summer they’ve fixed nothing.

Emery can influence this by putting pressure on the player as unwanted for next season. Spell it out plain as day that the player will not have a future here and will not be considered and that it’s best for all parties to find a better outcome ASAP.

Raul and chums can influence this by lowering prices where necessary and whoring said players out. Seeking out trade opportunities where we want a player, exploring other options like loaning a couple of them out etc

These guys are managers. Time to manage

  95. Marko

Raul confirmed himself that he was performing both role until an proper TD could be named.

I thought you said Steve Rowley was back at the club 😉

  96. Receding Hairline

“He is the only player in the French set-up who is in the age class two times higher than a player would typically be. He’s the first player to be in this situation since Kylian Mbappé,” said Head of Football at RMC Sport Mohamed Bouhafsi.

“Today, if you look at the transfers of De Ligt and other great defenders, €25m, €30m for Saliba is nothing, nothing at all.

“So, that is why Arsenal have very well understood that they should leave him at St Étienne for another year, or at least close the deal now, because if a player like Saliba is as good again in Ligue 1 this coming season, he will easily be worth €55m, €60m next summer.

“What I want to say though, is that it is not necessarily a bad calculation to sign a player who is going to be fantastic for many years and loan him back for one season.

“And who is going to grow during that time in terms of his qualities, rather than immediately putting him in a fierce competition for places, immediately putting him under pressure.

“Sometimes it is better to lose 1 year to gain 5 or 6 years, rather than to gain 1 year and lose everything.”

I like to listen to both sides of an argument even if i am arguing the other side. What the dude said makes a bit of sense but i am still concerned re our budget

  97. China1

Dissenter you paint a picture of a totally hopeless employer with zero influence over its own staff

Like I said, there will be cases which can’t or won’t be happily resolved, but if we can’t resolve a good handful of them we are a total failure

Players have power, not absolute power.

Re Bale, he’s one of the world’s most expensive players, injury prone and age not making him a likely good long term investment. His case is more ozil than xhaka, let’s be serious

  98. Dissenter

I’m sick of reading ‘there are guys who are paid handsomely” to it’ so it’s their fault.
They don’t have leverage because contracts have been signed already They don’t have tools [money] to grease the exits of these players.

Short of organizing a kidnap or hiring an assassin, how do we move the likes of Ozil out when no one else is interested in him?
I mean we could just pay off half of his wages and maybe someone else will be tempted to get him on 175k weekly wages. That will require money we supposedly din’t have.
The question then becomes who will want Ozil on 175k weekly? It will still be a major risk because he is utter shite at the moment,
…then does Ozil even want to leave when he’s on easy street at Arsenal?
The last time they tried freezing him out the usual actors here started their rumor mills to undermine the club.

It will take 1-2 seasons more to bleed out the toxins. No easy fixes are available.

I was hoping we will do some deals like this, English lads with an understanding of the physical demands of the English game, not go to Scotland and get insulted over Tierney

  101. China1

Well ozil is the ultimate special case mate and I don’t doubt we will probably fail to deal with that cunt because his problem is so large

The only hope for ozil is mark him down to a couple of mil and offer him to turkey, China, Qatar, America?? Or somewhere that will pay for his salary. I don’t think it’s going to happen tho

Honestly I want thre club to start thinking beyond easy fixes or band-aid solutions. I want the club to start planning beyong Emery which is why I fully support the approach to sign Saliba and loan him back to Saint-Étienne.

I fully support shifting way from this short-term band-aid mode we are running to one that lays a proper scaffold for the future. I’m willing to write off 1-2 seasons for the greater good of the club.
All the dross we have have signed have to be bled out for us to begin to thrive again.

Every difficult-to-move player at Arsenal has a case as complex as Arsenal.
We forget that the technical directors of even the smaller clubs have access to an extraordinary amount of data and they pay money under the table for whispered leaks about players.
It’s hard to dump crappy players on other clubs. We bought poorly and we are paying the price for it. We have a lot of duds on our books, players that are not in high demand. When demand is low…economics 101 kicks in.

I recall that old Ericsken vs Ozil debate
One cost 11 million and was never paid beyond 70k weekly, the other cost 44million and is now paid 350k.
Eriksen’s exit will allow Spurs to sign another good player in Ndombele and still be net 10-15 million ahead when they sell the Dane to Madrid or PSG.
Ozil… we are stuck with like an unnecessary second spare tire. I mean who carries two spare tires in their vehicles?

Who’s laughing at Ericksen now. They didn’t really misspend that Gareth Bale money, did they?

What you’ve done is first assume Atlético wanting Xhaka was kosher and not paper nonsense, then you’ve selected the reasons YOU see fit to promote.

I will admit assuming that anyone actually wants Xhaka is an error on my part but my point still stands overpaid and underperforming players aren’t easy to get rid of contrary to what some people say. And again the Llorente signing points to this. But again I see the error in getting into such a discussion with someone who doesn’t see there being a problem so I’ll stop

“Exactly, If Emery really want the likes of Mustafi, Kolasinac Elneny, etc OUT,he should be able to inform them in no certain terms they’re not in his plans for the upcoming season, end of,freeze them out or dont play them”

Then who does he play when they refuse to leave quietly or make a public stink.
You want the preseason to be consumed by tabloid drama.
That approach also assumes that we have reasonable alternate playing options. We certainly don’t have leverage there.
The players know that the club needs their exit to fund their replacement so they will dig in and demand pay-offs.
It’s not that easy and it’s certainly not the manager’s job. That’ should be on the technical director…of course we don’t have one yet.
It’s a good cop-bad cop routine. The technical director if the blunt one while the manger still needs to retain the trust of the player should shite hit the fan and those players were to still be around for next season.

What evidence is there that every single dud we have is a complex case tho?

Many players are too proud to sit in the reserves for a year (not all mind eh jenks and mesut!!! *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink* *flips table*)

Between kos mustafi xhaka and el neny, surely at least two of them are not shameless and would attract interest at a price relative to their worth 3-5m for kos, 10-15m for mustafi, 25-35m for xhaka, 5m for el neny

That’s 45-60m right there which buys you a saliba, that winger spurs just bought a martinelli and with change left over for a 3 piece meal down lickin’ chicken on harrow high street – and without weakening our team at all or touching our existing transfer funds…
