Top 3 opportunity goes to the last day (if we beat Brighton)

by .

Via @Arsenal Instagram

Hello top 4 my old friend.

I’ve come to try with you again.

Here we are AGAIN people. Spurs shit the bed against Bournemouth losing two players to red cards. Chelsea has a London derby against Watford tomorrow morning. We have to face off against the MIGHTY Brighton at home in a later kick-off.

This goes down to the last day if we can pull off a win. It’ll be a classic top 4 face off where any of 4 teams could sneak it on the last day. Who really needs a title race when you have a battle like this going on?

United are taking 6 points, no doubt.  FIXTURE FRAUD RIFE AS USUAL.

Last game for Spurs is Everton, which won’t be easy.

Last game for Chelsea is apparently one of the most underrated midtable teams in the world… Leicester.

We have to go away to Burnley, which is never easy… because 1) we are Arsenal 2) it is away from home.

All we can do is win both our games and pray for an upset. Incredible that we’ve lost 4 of our last 5 games. A travesty.

Still, worth remembering we have two chances at the promised land. Europa League is looking good for us. Mulling over whether I’d prefer Chelsea or Frankfurt… at least we know we’ll turn up if it’s Chelsea.

Alex Iwobi, had something to say on his record this season.

“I try to dwell on the positive and not dwell on the negative as much as I can. If I make a mistake I try to use it as a lesson and try to improve on it. We have a lot of good fans as well.”

“They are entitled to their own opinion and I am happy with the progress I have made this season. I have been able to get more goals than I had in the previous season and I have”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of himself here. 4 assists and 5 goals across 48 games is a pitiful record in his third season. That’s the sort of return you’d expect from a decent full back. Not someone who in an attacking role for a team trying to be protaganists. If you’re brutally honest, it’s not good enough and it’s hard to see when it comes good. He lacks physicality, offers up little pace and the decision making hasn’t gotten any sharper.

As we rebuild this summer, the focus really has to be on players that aren’t happy with ‘a few assists’, we need to bring in electric pace, and a brutal winner takes all mentality. We’ve really struggled out wide this year and it’s the excuses are running out because he’s been given a huge amount of game time.

What would Saka have done with that many games? Maybe we should find out… or just pony up the money and bring in Pepe, Sarr, or Zaha?

Alex Lacazette took the player of the season. There’s been some fierce debates in my chat groups. No one really stood out majorly this season. There was a lot of ok or good form in spits and spats. Dare I say if Ramsey hadn’t have been benched for the first half of the year, he’d be taking that? Him or Leno for me. But hey, I love the Frenchman. He works hards, he makes so much out of nothing and he’s popped up with important goals all year. He and Auba have had a far beyond average impact on our conversion rate in front of goal and we are very lucky to have the both of them.

Emery was asked by a paid-up journo whether winning the remaining two games was important. Imagine that being the extent of your questioning when you’re handed the mic?

Good afternoon. We need to win the next match and if we win against Brighton we are going to the last match against Burnley with the possibility to be in the top four. It’s not in our hands, but we need to win our matches and the first is Sunday. It’s not easy to win each match – for us and for other teams – but the focus for us is to win against Brighton for different situations. We are going to play the last match at home. We are going the play the last match with Petr Cech, with Aaron Ramsey and also I think we want to finish at the Emirates with a victory. The first objective is to finish in the top four and it will give us the chance.

The ‘good afternoon’ is a lovely touch. Interesting that we might start Cech. He had a good game against Valenica, but this game isn’t a dead rubber.

The manager was asked if he thought we’d progressed.

Yes I am. Our progress I think – when we started the season we lost against Man City and Chelsea  and we worked for this process, little by little and at the end of the season now we are with this possibility. I think when we started we would have been happy to have today these two opportunities in the Premier League and Europa League to reach our target.

I think he’s trying to say that we are competing for top 4 this season, which hasn’t been the case. He’s right. If we make top 4, it’s hard to argue about his success. It’s like the FA Cup final in 2005, it was grubby, but we did it. However, if you are into reality, he’s not progressed the club like most of us would have hoped. But, he’ll get the next season to stamp his authority… I’m sure there will still be those that can’t tolerate any critique until he’s purged every last binman that was under Wenger’s control, but there we go.

One step at a time… Emery HAS to put on a show tomorrow. Send the fans home with a smile and make sure they’re hanging back for that lap of honour!

Right, see you in the comments x

Can’t see anything other than ManU winning their last two matches.

bennydevito

Lots of wingers cut in though and score goals and provide assists, Giggs, Pires, Overmars CR7 at Man utd, Robben, plenty of others. They start on the wing and run the channels but they don’t just cross or pass or stay out wide do they.

bennydevito

I expect Man utd and Chelsea to win. Was hoping for Watford to pull off a shock but now that Wolves have won and secured the final EL place I can’t see it now.

Receding Hairline

Benny don’t bother….

Wingers only hug the touch line, Aaron Lennon and SWP scored their many goals from the touch line, they never cut in field. Once they did they became midfielders.

I wouldn’t term robben an out and out winger though. His more of a wide forward or inside forward.

Not yet. If Leicester city wins the last two games and Wolves loses his last game, Leicester city will take the 7th spot.

Everton’s last 4 home games has seen them beat Chelsea, Arsenal, Man utd and Burnley without conceding a goal. Makes our defeat not that bad in context when you consider we only lost 1 nil and had to make changes due to inury, illness and suspension. Losing to Palace at home also not as bad as being made out although not great, when you consider they beat Man city by the same score at home who have a much better squad, and we were also forced to change the lineup again due to injury, illness and suspension. I know that there is massive concern about our away form particularly in the last two games against Wolves and Leicester. However, there is one positive about our game against Burnley which may give us some degree of optimism for finishing in top 4 at end of season. Burnley have not beaten Arsenal in the last 12 games since they have played in EPL in all competitions. No one has said those losses were “fine”. What we’ve said is that those losses were the result of an inadequate squad, not the manager, and that those teams are better than some of you are allowing.

Bamford10

Pedro One, that we might finish top four could just as easily be an argument for the quality of what the manager has done with the players he has as I t could be an argument for the quality of those players. Why do you always assume being top four tells us something about the quality of the players and not something about the quality of what the manager has done with those players? I’ll tell you why: because you have an agenda. Every pundit worth his salt has said something along the lines of: “Emery deserves massive plaudits for… Read more »

Arsenal Truth after Leicester City— “Arsenal have played double the games of Leicester this April and 12 more matches than them this season overall. Anyone who thinks that statistic is not factored into performance levels needs a word with themselves. Any complaints about lack of effort or ‘bottling it’ only displays an ignorance of the physical demands placed on a shallow squad, lacking confidence and physical attributes. Whatever way you want to wash it, the plain fact is, too many of these players are not good enough to play for Arsenal. You can’t trade on Arsenal’s history and use that… Read more »

Arsenal Truth after Valencia—

“Let’s be honest, what is Emery supposed to do? Guendouzi and Xhaka is no partnership, Ozil floats around in a world of his own and the wing backs offer absolutely nothing. AMN’s inexperience has really shone through recently, but I’m not going to criticise him for that. Kolasinac, meanwhile, is absolutely moronic. The Bosnian built some currency earlier in this season, but last night he was unspeakably bad.”

Interesting. Sounds like he thinks our issues are largely down to the inadequate personnel options Emery has, not down to Emery. Sensible guy.

Moray

One thing that has tested Emery is the weakness in our squad players. At the squeaky end of the season, this is when you need players like Elneny to come in and perform solidly. Unfortunately, the manager did not understand the physical demands of the Premiership and failed to keep the squad players involved through the the season. Therefore when we did need them they weren’t ready, weren’t good enough. I think the big learning curve for Emery this year must be around the squad. Yes Pedro, interesting point there

Why is the fact we are in the mix for a top four finish testament to the quality of the squad and not the quality of the manager? Why is every defeat proof of his lack of quality?

You have decided to swerve that question, please do answer it.

Receding Hairline

Guardiola has lost at home to palace and away to Leicester.. These are suppose to be sure signs of the blandness of a manager and his lack of quality.

You have made absolutely no allowance for the fact that this man is in his first season in England working with a squad he did not assemble yet competing till the end for a top four place and a European cup. Apparently it is down to our world class players yet the other day Leno was the only one you would keep.

Un na naai

The author at arsenaltruth strikes me as a but if an imbecile but let’s put that to one side for the moment. His view is just that, a view. The MAJORITY of London gooners are of the opinion that losing 3 games on the bounce toninferior opposition is unacceptable. Especially when you factor in that they again put “fatigue” aside to raise their game against Valencia. That fact alone rubbishes Bamford Marko’s insipid suggestions that “fatigue” has reared its ugly head. What utter tosh.

Un na naai

Why is the fact we are in the mix for a top four finish testament to the quality of the squad and not the quality of the manager? Why is every defeat proof of his lack of quality?

RH

Could it not be that both the manager and the squad are more than capable of attaining a top four finish? Nobody is expecting this squad to win the title but we are expecting top four. Especially when our rivals are falling over themselves to let us back in.

Emiratesstroller

Arsenal supporters are entitled to complain about all manner of reasons for our recent poor form. Let’s start off with scheduling. We are playing on average two games a week and in some cases up to four games in ten days. Second we have been playing without FOUR players since February i.e. Welbeck, Holding, Bellerin and Suarez. You can add since Napoli game Ramsey. Third we have got THREE other players in squad who are so useless that the Manager is unwilling to play them except in absolute emergency namely Elneny, Lichsteiner and Jenkinson. I don’t really care if cech goes to coach at Chelsea. Is there any evidence that the guy will make a good coach?

He’s a footballer who didn’t even begin to learn how to pass a football with his feet before the age of about 34 or whatever he is now

I would say complimenting tactics with players with the attributes you specified is the aim.

I actually think Graeme Souness had a point with his pen throwing rant in midweek. You can have all the tactical expertise in the world but if you have no application or work rate it doesn’t matter.

Man City and Liverpool are so far ahead of the rest because of their tactical awareness, positional play married with hard work and technical ability.

I think it’s hard to make this team better defensively over just one season in relation to what occurred before under the previous manager coupled with defensively suspect players playing every week. And also that overall Arsenal have the need to be seen as the protagonists in matches even though the style of football has not been impressive.

As said before that unbeaten run had people thinking that weaknesses were really being addressed. In reality that run of fixtures fell very nicely playing teams of a certain standard overall coupled with being quite strong in home matches.

It’s his blog, so the article he writes is obviously going to be tainted with his opinion, and it’s up to you to agree/disagree and discuss. That quote you’ve earmarked about Ramsey there is a question too, so really not getting how you’re finding it pompous.

I thought I reiterated that Pedro has the freedom to taint his blog with his opinion.
I was just expressing my opinion of his insistence on repeating something that not true.
Thanks for your opinion about my opinion..

Actually I asked a question of your opinion, a couple in fact. Seems you’re going out your way to find unassailable bias in what’s written from him.

What’s your view of Ramsey early season?

@CG, At youth level including his year loan at Ipswich, AMN was a rampaging right winger. Then he was coached into a more subdued player. He is still capable of moment without the hand break like his goal against Liverpool demonstrated. However those are becoming less and less frequent. Everybody seems to think that his best position is centre midfield. However he has never played there on a regular basis. He may become the next Gilberto Silva, but I don’t see it. He can do a job there, but IMHO he lacks some of the characteristics of a world class… Read more »

It is funny how some people have pivoted their narrative with regard to Ramsey and Özil. When Emery benched them, it was the right thing to do. At last a manager with the authority to select players on form. Neither deserved to grace Arsenal shirt.
Now it is, he did not bench them, they were injured. Injured While Ramsey sat on the bench! After he recalled them after ostracizing them, he never ostracised them, anyway they have changed.

PedroMay 5, 2019    00:48:16 Benny, not sure anyone is going to go along with you saying losing to Palace at home… or the other defeats… were fine. >>>>> Pedro, When did I say they were fine?? I didn’t. I said in context they weren’t as bad as being made out. And I am not absolving Emery. I have since reevaluated my opinion based on the season as a whole and how our defence hasn’t improved and how I don’t think the players respect or understand Emery and have said I think he should go in the summer have I not?… Read more »

Ashley Cole started off as a striker then turned into a very good left back.

Glen Hoddle and Lothar Matthias both started in midfield then dropped back as sweepers in their later years.

Players can change and develop into different positions, it’s the sign of football intelligence and the Dutch academics esp Ajax train all their youngsters in every position allowing for greater flexibility and interchangeable tactics as adult footballers.

Didn’t Gerrard start off on the right wing at Liverpool? Moved to the centre of midfield and became a great player. Bale from LB to LW/AM/RW. Pretty sure Bellerin played further up the pitch as a youngster. Players change positions in order to develop/improve, it happens.

AMN hasn’t shown any signs of being able to control the game from the centre of the pitch, so I’m not sure why some think that’s his ‘best position’. Playing as a RWB covers the deficiencies in his passing/vision/defending. Same with Bellerin.
