Momentum rolls the way of Arsenal

The OGS gravy train has well and truly derailed.

‘THIS MAN HAS BROUGHT JOY BACK TO THE UNITED CAMP’

I love the continuous hope in the press that United has maybe found a new saviour.

Turns out, it might not be OGS. The little hit of dopamine he brought after Jose Mourinho was fired has dampened, and now he’s just left with a mess of overpaid players who seem to lack any amount of fucks.

I did have a little worry at the start of that epic run that maybe he had the keys to unlock a chained squad. I think the reality has to settle in now that maybe the players over there aren’t as good as everyone thinks.

Anyway, there’s no shame in losing out on a Champions League medal because Lio Messi is a fucking genius, but there has to be some sort of consequence to not making the top 4. I’m not making a prediction either way, because we are just as capable of fucking up the last 5 games as they are… but it looks like momentum is back with Arsenal.

We have a tough game of our own to deal with on Thursday, and not at an ideal time either. So odd that the Prem would work against a UK team and let us play Watford on a Monday.

Still, we kept a clean sheet away from home and a actually won. Hopefully the big game feel that this match will bring will extract the maximum focus from the players that they’ll need if they’re to push us through to a slightly easier semi final… which should be against Valencia.

A big week for us… I’ll catch you in the comments x

Cue the incessant Spurs love in now on the BBC. Goodness me, what if we end up with a Liverpool vs. Tottenham final for the Champions League? How unbelievably unbearable would Spurs be if they won the Champions League before us? Ugggh. In fact, a quick impromptu poll. What’s more unpalatable for the Arsenal fan? Liverpool winning the league this year or Tottenham winning the Champions League? For me it’s the latter but it’s a very close run thing. All the more reason for us to win a European trophy… albeit the Europa League AND qualify for the Champions League… Read more »

I mean you can hardly say that Spurs have no chance?

Chelsea had no chance in 2012 and look what happened.

Ajax will hardly scare them after beating City and Dortmund.

“Some might say it’s similar to the inaccurate agenda driven rhetoric towards Arsene Wenger by the Wenger [out types] over the last ten years …”

Except that there was nothing inaccurate about our criticism of Arsene Wenger.

That you think there was speaks volumes about your POV and should help some people here better understand what motivates your commentary here.

Leeds

Not even close mate, Spuds winning the CL is unthinkable.

We’ve won the PL so many times that you’d survive if Pool won it, banter wise Spurs winning the CL before us would KO the club’s rep as a level above them cunts.

David Smith

Ajax have very little to lose, pressure all on Spurs this time. Will be interesting how Spurs cope with such a possession based team under such circumstances.
Wouldn’t write Ajax off, at all.
But even if they get there, Spurs are not good enough to beat Barca in a final, and if Liverpool make it, after last year, they are not only better than Spurs, they will be the most motivated team on the planet.
All tonight’s result will really do is help us in the battle for third place.

WengerEagle

Suarez and Coutinho back at Anfield should be tasty.

Expect a huge performance out of the latter especially.

Paulinho

Stan Wawrinka won the US Open after saving match points against bloody Dan Evans in the first round.

Spurs will gain strength from how they’ve got here, and think their name is on it. Just feel Ajax will suffer same fate Monaco suffered against Juve a few years back. Played well but still lost.

Leedsgunner

It’s just mental that Tottenham has gotten this far. I’m just hoping that they will revert to form and bottle it.

It would be the definition of unbearable if Spurs won the Champions League. I mean it was bad when Chelsea flunked a win under Roberto Di Matteo but if Spurs won it we would never hear the end of it.

Kay

I agree with Paulinho.

As good as Ajax have been, I feel Spuds will overcome Ajax.

90 mins against Barca or Pool is no ones guess. That Bad feeling.

How has it come to this? Spurs in CL semi, ahead of us in PL, Liverpool atop the pile… Why oh why all this fuss about getting 4th place? We have zero chance of winning CL, or even genuinely competing in it. My one consolation is that I haven’t contributed a penny to the Club since Stan took over. Nothing will improve while he is still around. Once you accept this as axiomatic, the solution is obvious: stay away. Do that, and he will either have to take us seriously, or sell up. Arsenal is like smoking. Giving up is… Read more »

Ajax will also gain strength on how they got here.
Liverpool will gain strength from a chance to right what they may regard as a Ramos inflicted wrong from last year.
And Barca in a final, as long as key players are available will already have too much strength for any of them at that juncture.

Bamford10

Son is excellent, but those first two Spurs goals were almost entirely down to bad mistakes from Laporte and somewhat lax defending from City. Ajax are not going to gift them goals like that, and neither are Barca or Liverpool.

Bamford10

“Why oh why all this fuss about getting 4th place? We have zero chance of winning CL, or even genuinely competing in it.”

If the unthinkable happens and it’s a Liverpool v Spurs final, I’ll find my inner scouser (even if he doesn’t exist) and go with Liverpool all the way.

It’s one thing facing deluded Spurs fans over here in North London every day.

Facing Spurs fans who’d actually won something, and not just something but the Champions League is a thought too unbearable to contemplate.

And then we’d have Un Battle crowing all the time about the Clean Money and the Virtuous English Corr of Spurs.

Oh God even the thought sends me into spasms of horror….

This is the angle they didn’t show on the VAR replay. Watch it and it clearly shows the ball striking his arm and ricocheting down onto his hip and into the goal.

I recorded it off of the BT sport highlights programme and put it public on my Facebook.

Thoughts?

Please don’t laugh too much at my Bristolian accent!

Luteo Guenreira

Yeah I’m with HL, that’s enough of that talk. I was going to respond earlier regarding the would you rather hypothetical about Pool or Spuds, and I literally couldn’t bring myself to fathom it and just stopped typing.

I would take a 4-3 loss tomorrow. Fucking hell.

Luteo Guenreira

Benny

It was pretty clear to me on replay that the ball hit off Llorente’s arm before hitting his hip for the goal. You can see this forearm muscles shake on impact, the commentators on stream I was watching did bring it up as well.

Even then I don’t think I disallow that goal, his arm was pretty much down and he had no idea where the ball was when it hit off him.

Charlie George

An acerbic ( and slightly harsh) analysis on the fledgling managerial career of OGS by the unremitting PedRo, and I off course thank him for it. Man Utd could have had the best manager in the world in charge and they would still have succumbed to the Genius of Messi. By the time he retires pro soccer- he will be around the 700 goal mark. This season is going to end a nightmare for me even if we end up finishing 3rd and winning the EL.

Liverpool winning the league is bad enough but the scenario of Liverpool winning the league and Spuds winning the CL makes me want to pass out.

If it should happen to be a Liverpool Spurs final then the unthinkable will happen and I will have to be a Liverpool fan for the night.

I feel sick.

bennydevito

CG,

Arsene Wenger was a cigarette paper away from signing every world class player that ever lived from 97 onwards from Zidane to CR7. The fact it didn’t happen though should tell you that either his judgement was off and his dithering cost us or they didn’t rate him.

Both I suspect.

bennydevito

I think the away goal rule should be scrapped. That match deserved to be won outright either in another half hour of extra time or with a penalty shootout.

Charlie George

He clearly became more in decisive as the older he got.

That is a normal reflex.
But for all the near misses.

There were plenty of good uns:
Anelka , Henry,Cesc,Hector, Rambo, Vieria, carzola, Kanu, RVP, Eduardo,, Edu,Rambo, etc etc

Wenger gave us footballing memories that can’t be erased. So many highs. Lots of Lows too.
He made us love Arsenal even more than we thought was possible.

Chelsea had no chance in 2012 and look what happened. I’m not sure you can compare Spurs to them in all honesty. Jesus. Reading the comments in the Guardian from the Spuds supporters…complete delusion. They seem to have their club pegged as plucky underdogs with a squad assembled on a shoestring. And Poch is possibly the greatest manager in the world…I can’t wait for a club with even less money (Ajax) and a less heralded Manager In Ten Hag to knock them out. They cannot have the pleasure of going to a final, even if they will be whipped. Barca v Ajax.

Moray

Marko, plus Spuds will come in to the game this time not as underdogs. That will play on them..

Moray

Charlie, even if Wenger had signed Messi he would have tried turning him into a left back or something. Better he grew up in the system at Barca and we have had the pleasure of seeing one of the greatest players in history.

Marko

plus Spuds will come in to the game this time not as underdogs.

That’s true

Moray

This season is on a knife edge. As it stands, Chelsea could win the Euro Cup, Spuds the CL and Liverpool the league. That is the worst case scenario. Even if we make third that makes it one of the worst seasons I can remember. Equally, we could win the Euro, Ajax win the CL and City with the league: with Spuds crashing out of top 4. All in the balance.

“his dithering cost us or they didn’t rate him”

Your first point is obvious . As for point #2, the players you highlight were born winners. Of course they weren’t going to come and play for him/us.

Those few world class players we did have, became disillusioned and fed up with his methods and philosophies, especially when they could see that it was never going to bare fruit.

Up until 2010, he just about got away with things but thereafter it was downhill nearly all the way.

Un Battle Angel

Spurs and Ajax are leaving the way and developing young gems and turning them into considerable players on the biggest stage.

An example to us all. Don’t forget, most of the all conquering Barca side were domestic talents who were educated in the Spanish doctrines of the sport. You play to your own strengths. Not just keep importing the next cheapish ready made option. It’s crass and the sport is losing its life blood because of it

Spuds will be under far more pressure against Ajax, because they are expected to win.

No surprise that so many Arsenal supporters are pissed off that Spuds won last night. However, from a footballing perspective and the greater joy and appreciation of the game, I’m glad MC are gone. It should be obvious to you all why, as has already been highlighted by other posters on here. The simple fact of the matter is that football is governed by greed and power. Fair play to them

If our funds are limited as it is being reported, personally I would rather we focused on revamping our defence with outside reinforcements than spending money on a winger this summer. We need a commanding centre back and a new left back. If we strengthen our defence we will lessen our need for our forwards to take their chances so much. Then promote W.illock, Saka Nketiah and Ballard. When ESR, Martinez, Chambers and Reiss Nelson come back from their loans make them squad players. Having said that if we sell Mustafi, Elneny, Jenkinson, Pleguezuelo, Mkhitaryan, Asano, Ospina and Nwakali well… Read more »

I’m sure if I was to look back at the comments on Le Grove 12 months ago , I would find many similar posts from the wenger obsessives denigrating the Europa cup.

Alex James

No matter what way people dress up the success of Spurs, the fact remains that a CL final win by them would be an utter disaster for us. Chelsea fans already rub their success in our faces, but a Spurs win would lift the degree of taunt to another level. No longer could we throw 60 years and counting at them. The Wenger / Gazides years are on a par with what fans of my age remember about the 60s. A rudderless club, with Spurs way ahead of us. We couldn’t even beat third division Swindon. Shocking!

Chris

Spurs are 4-1 to win the Champions League.

If you think it’s destiny stick 20 on it, might as well profit on the inevitable misery.

Pierre

Tonight’s game is what I would call a no win situation for Emery, if we get through he will.not receive too much credit unless we go there and totally outplay napoli and win by 2 or 3 goals( can’t really see that happening)

If we fail to qualify then he will receive copious amounts of criticism.

It could be a difficult night for our manager if he gets his tactics and team selection wrong.

TitsMcGee

Spurs have done well to reach the semis. Them winning the whole thing would be a a hard wake up call but goes to show how being ambitious can pay off. Liverpool and Spurs didn’t just sit back and “accept” that they couldn’t compete with the “oil money” clubs. Something that has been repeated ad nauseam here as a means to excuse our failings the last decade + .
