Grim win, but the most enjoyable of the season

by .

Via @Arsenal Instagram

I don’t really abide by the winning ugly notion. It’s often used to explain away consistently poor performances that are often a precursor to a dip. However, yesterday’s win over Watford was the most delicious ugly win of the season. Emery proved his mettle, he lined up with a strong side, the aggressive working mentality he’s brought to the team won the first goal, and we held out for our first away clean sheet of the season (felt like our first away win of the season if I’m honest).

Troy Deeney, a man famed for beating up students, did his teams preparation no favours when he threw out a cowardly elbow at the smallest player on our team and took a straight red card. That was a fucking bold decision for the ref to take and in a world of weak decision making, he needs to be commended and give a WH Smith voucher for good service… OR A KNIGHTHOOD.

We didn’t really take advantage of the ten men. Watford showed us that they were still in the game. It didn’t matter though, because lady luck was on our side and grit/determination paid out big.

The first goal came from Auba, he chased down a back pass aggressively and Ben Foster smashed the ball into his heel and the goal was his. You cannot knock that attitude. He has been such a good player for us. He’s clinical even when he’s not looking.

We rode our luck a little. Bernd Leno continued to prove one of the shrewdest signings of last summer. His wrists are rock solid, his reflexes are cat-like and his timing when rushing players gets better and better. He was a real lifesaver last night. It’s been well over ten years since we had a keeper worth net+ points. I love him. It’s a huge risk to buy a keeper on a downward spiral, it’s such a confidence position, but Sven M dropped a world class decision there.

I think it’s worth giving Mustafi a shout out. Always a huge risk at the back, but his aerial aggression kept us in it late. Whatever you think about the German, he’s an absolute athlete and he loves the fight.

Also… AMN, my man… that tracking late on to deny Andre Gray late on was exceptional defending. He really has grown into his position. I didn’t have faith he could be a good right back, I know the club rated him as a midfielder, but my oh my, he has excelled. We don’t need to go into the market there this summer, that’s for sure.

So two things we learned last night. Away form is in the head. We have the players, the performance was rough last night, but we delivered the three points. Now we have build from that and do it against Napoli on Thursday and then the really tough one… Wolves next Wednesday.

The second thing we learned is this team, under Emery, can deal with pressure. An Arsene Wenger side would have collapsed under the barrage of yesterday. Our boys didn’t. Everyone put in a shift, even if the performance was grim.

A good day to be an Arsenal fan… we’re in the mix, keeping up the pressure, onto the next!

If anyone posts anything that even remotely resembles racism, you will be binned with no comment __________ Pedro – I applaud your effort to clean up things.. but currently you have too many commenters who only comment about other commenters.. They could care less about adding commentary about the team, tactics, manager .. whatever.. Its all about trolling other commenters regardless of whether they make a racist or bigoted comment. Until that stops nothing will change much. I don’t think most people come here to be personally attacked, but are ok with getting criticized about their opinions on the team… Read more »

Funny how Dutch football was never in worse shape only a couple of seasons ago with a geriatric Robben their only decent player and now they have De Ligt/Van Djik centre half partnership, De Jong, Van de Beek in CM and a rejuvenated Memphis Depay.

They still need a couple of more forwards to emerge but they’re looking good.

MidwestGun

Yeah I knew they hadn’t won every year. but honestly … The Eredivisie is barely noticeable. That’s why I said nobody cares. Anyhow.. I am impressed by their team and would absolutely love it if the won the CL ..
But can’t see it ever happening in a bigger league starting mostly youth players where there is teams who can spend a fortune to take care of all their weaknesses and plunder players from around the globe.

I mean didn’t we kind of see that when Monaco bested PSG to the league in 2017?

Agree that it’s virtually impossible to replicate it in the PL though, and when was the last time that we produced a top drawer youngster? Jack in 2010?

MidwestGun

Eagle _
Yeah I guess maybe Monaco.. and possibly Dortmund of the Klopp era. Until Bayern got serious. Can you imagine though if Arsenal had actually started all the youth players people on here constantly call for from the start of the season.. I’m all for getting younger but let’s not get crazy.. I would say 2 maybe 3 youth players a season tops to get a look in..

WengerEagle

Mid Again I wouldn’t necessarily cap a number, if you’re good enough you’re old enough as they say. De Ligt is 19 but he’s absurdly good as M’Bappe for Monaco at 18 was. Cesc was like that for us in 2005. It’s true though that most young players need to be eased into the first team picture. Guys like Iwobi are just bang average though and it’s clear to see from early on, he’s almost 23 and he hasn’t improved as a player from when he was 19. He’s another one like Wally who’ll we’ll flog to death with the… Read more »

Not sure,if the Spuds will be battered tomorrow.Pep tends to wilt, when he’s played at his own game. That said,Spurs do have a history of bottling the big games when it counts the most.

No doubt Man City, will be all over Spurs like bees to honey, but tactically it’s how Poch tactically picks them off on the counter.

A close call from my end..My money is on Man City, but anything goes in a cup game over 180 mins.

Yep.. it’s not an exact science that’s for sure.. I find it pretty hard to blame Emery for not playing more youth this season though. Let’s get real.. he needed to get us in top 4.. not develop some fringe players his first season. And I mean he did start Matty G. and AMN too. But usually yeah you can tell by the time they get to 23 or 24. Isn’t Holding about that age. now. You could tell he had something.. this season until that bad injury.

MidwestGun

I’m honestly more worried Pool will win the CL.. then Spuds. Either way though we will never hear the end of it for decades and decades if it should happen.

WengerEagle

Middy

I wouldn’t hold it against Emery because we simply haven’t the talent at youth level, it’s not like he’s hiding a Sancho or a De Ligt in there.

I have been disappointed by Guendouzi tbh, don’t believe that he warrants the hype and he hasn’t shown me that he has the ingredients to go on and hit that next level.

Reiss Nelson at least looks interesting, 7 goals in the Bundesliga and he hasn’t played many minutes. Will add goals to the side if nothing else.

WengerEagle

Bin Dippers definitely have the potential to upset Barcelona.

Salah and Mane will get oceans of space to run in at the Nou Camp and let’s be honest, they would have put away at least one of those chances that Utd spurned tonight earlier on.

MidwestGun

Matty G.. Is getting the thrown in the deep end training a little bit. Depends on his character it might really help him or it might really hurt him.. But, I don’t think we will find out until next season which it is. The most worrying thing about him.. is he has no eye for goal. Anymore, you have to expect goals from every position.. kind of where the modern game is going.

Valentin

@MidwestGun, Ajax have not won the Eredivisie since the season 2013-2014. The level of the Dutch division may not be the best, but in term of competitiveness it may be better than you think. The pressure to win is the same than at any top 6 English clubs. The difference is money. Ajax knows that they can’t compete for the very best players, so they have to either form them or scout them before they become hot property. Being relatively poor forces them to behave smartly and be willing to take risk on youth players. In the premiership, it is… Read more »

MidwestGun

Valentin-
True.. it is about ability to take those risks. PL teams really can’t. Maybe if they had more of a B team system.. where they got an automatic berth in the Championship or something like that.. Where you could find out maybe more quickly then a loan system.

Valentin

@Midwest, You seem to consider that integrating youth team should be an afterthought. It is not. Integrating youth team players to the first team is called squad management and strategic planning. Not every youth players is a MBappe with talent so evident so young that only a blind or idiot coach would refuse to play him. Ferguson was a master of squad management and strategic planning. Every seasons he introduced 1 to 3 new youth team players to the first team and if they were good enough they stayed with the team the following season. The result is that even… Read more »

Well said Valentin, exactly that it’s about ability to take risks on players. The elite clubs can afford to pay for players when they’re established as stars so they primarily do to lower risk that the player works out a success. We were/are in that weird quasi bracket between the elite clubs and the smaller clubs where we can afford the very odd elite priced player/established star but we have to make the unearthed potential stars/youth talent our bread and butter. My criticism at the moment ..is stop doing so many tactics.. Pick a freakin formation FFS. hahaha And I never thought I would say that after the Wenger era anti- tactics.

WengerEagle

Ajax do have a decent mix of youth and experience though.

Tadic is 30, Schone is 32, Ziyech is 26 and an established international, Tagliafico is 26 and an established international, Blind is 29 and has a tonne of experience, they also have Huntelaar who’s an extremely seasoned pro that played plenty of CL and tournament football.

Combined with the fearlessness and boundless youthful energy of De Ligt, De Jong, Neres, Mazraoui and De Beek and they’re a pretty scary proposition for anyone.

Words on a Blog

MidWest,

Yeah, Emery loves him his tactics. When it works, it’s great.

Butbery often it confuses our payers just as muc, if not more, than the opposition.

I’m not sure he was like that at PSG – Valentin would know but I don’t really follow French football. Feels like he’s positioning himself as the anti-Wenger, who only had one set of tactics, whatever the situation, and whoever the opposition

Valentin

No I am not saying introducing 5/6 players in a game, more like 1 or two for the easy games. Not even from the start, but at the 70 minutes mark. Like I said before, if you don’t introduce them in game against Huddersfield, Fulham, Cardiff, Brighton (especially home game), they never will be ready when the squad is stretched and you need them. My view is also that there is no benefit in playing players you already know are not good enough and will never be good enough. Cut your loss early and be decisive. The Lichsteiner experiment lasted… Read more »

Emery is starting to remind me a little of Roberto Martinez.. he loves him some tactics too. He is in Encyclopedia of knowledge in the subject but.. I always thought he over managed at times as well.

Valentin

Words on a Blog

MidWest,

Hmm, Martinez…..not sure….but both Emery and Martinez share, shall we say, a certain lack of defensive rigour…..

Valentin

The Watford game was a classic example of Emery overthinking it. We changed systems so many time it was ridiculous. I suspect even the players were confused.

When Guendouzi was introduced the first three minutes he had to talk to 4/5 players to transmit the new instructions.

Remember the game where Iwobi was asking Xhaka what was the formation they were playing in.

Words on a Blog

And I’m sure Pedro would point out that both Emery and Martinez both share a strong resemblance to Dracula…..although Emery hands down beats Martinez on that score…

Words on a Blog

Valentin,
Yeah I remember the classic Iwobi question re the formation we were supposed to be playing.

He does like to over complicate things sometimes..

But if he gets us into the top 4 / Chamions League, I’ll forgive him.

MidwestGun

Valentin- Don’t disagree with you there.. I mean when you got Mhiki playing as a rb at one point you know you have over though tactic adjustments.. I was worried about Miki before the match and I was proved right. He has lost it.. been on a downward spiral the whole season. I personally don’t want to see him play anywhere not even CAM.. too slow.. passing too erratic and his shooting makes me cry.. not in a good.. way.. I know it was the most recent game but he hasn’t been good all season.. other then a brief spurt… Read more »

Valentin

Martinez definitely lacked defensive rigour and also according to his former player did not enjoy training exercise based on boring repetition.

Emery had the same away issue during his last season at Sevilla, so that notion of Arsenal players having a mental block can only be one part of the explanation not the main reason for our away day blues.

With Emery, I wonder if that lack of defensive rigour is more due to the will to impose a system without taking into account the weaknesses of his own players.
Also changing systems is not conducive of a settled defense.

Just go gung ho to get that away goal in the first 10-15 minutes. Failing to do that I guess have to defend properly then try to counter . Just need one lapse moment from them anyway to catch them off guard. Simples.

Thing is we have only one dribbler so need to pass in behind for the pacy players to run into. I don’t know why Auba can’t be utilised that way. He’s so weak in controlling the ball and dribbling it’s almost Wellbeck like.

Auba not confident at dribbling and never takes any player on one on one

It is clear from yesterday’s performance that Ajax have got a lot of talent and as many others suggested outplayed Juventus. Whether those players can perform in a “high intensity league” such as EPL is a different matter altogether. Clearly De Ligt is a class act and any top club in Europe with ambition would like to recruit him. Arsenal have been linked with two of Ajax squad specifically Tagliafico and Neres. Quality defenders is a must, but even if Reiss Nelson is promoted to first team, we would still need one quick dribbling winger.
Our main weaknesses has been our inability to unlock well drilled compact defense, because we have nobody who can create space by disrupting the opposition by dribbling. All our attacking midfielder are passers and want to play as 10. Nobody is willing to take on a fullback in a 1v1 situation.

Regards Ajax.

I know! It’s all about the money.

Just imagine if if there was a transfer embargo for the next five years.

Who would be kings of Europe then?

Valentin

@Emirates,

Ajax may not have a choice. Two reasons:

Reason 1: Money talk and for a club like Ajax big money talks loudly. If a club makes an offer that Ajax can’t refuse, that player will be gone even if the offer arrives 5 minutes before deadline and Ajax doesn’t have a replacement.

Reason 2: Player and Agent power. Mino Raiola has some of their players on his book. If he thinks that his player should move, he will be as disruptive as humanly imaginable to make that happen.

Emiratesstroller

Valentin Ajax are not a poor club and I can assure you that they do not have to sell wholesale their players particularly in a season where they have reached already the semi final of Champions League. Ajax operate in a similar fashion to the Portuguese Clubs. They can and probably will sell a couple of players for big transfers. De Jong has been sold already to Barcelona for £75 million and De Ligt will fetch even more. You need to consider the tax position as well. Barca practices a lot this short double pass. They have a guy standing with the back to the goal. You pass the ball to him and then run sideways. He onetimes the ball to where you are running. This can help opening up a defense.
