Who landed an invite to Mesut’s wedding?

by .

The race for Top 4 feels like it’s really leaning in our direction. I don’t want to jinx anything, but it looks like Sarri is a busted flush, it seems like OGS is hitting the skids at absolutely the right time, and Arsenal has somehow found a magic formula with a mere 8 games to go.

I appreciate every game is going to be very tough on the ride home, but outside Wolves, I think we should have more than enough for most teams if Emery can keep the players excited about their CL bonuses.

Exciting times, right?

Monchi spoke to the press and told them why he bottled the move to Arsenal.

“I appreciate the interest of Arsenal, perhaps the one that has shown the most interest, and of other clubs who have made contact. I have evaluated the proposals I had and I have chosen Sevilla. It was the one that brought things together and had the conditions for me.”

What a wimp.

We move on. I think the consistent drone of people whining on about him not joining is super fucking bland. Honestly, Monchi turning us down for Sevilla is a comfort thing. He likes being a big fish in a small pond. He doesn’t want the pressure of extreme accountability. As Gambon penned somewhere, he just wants to buy 50 £500k players every summer and hope 1 or 2 come good. Arm him with big money and he shits the bed and buys dilapidated 29-year-olds.

We need someone with fresher thinking. Someone who is the next big thing. Someone who can be a little cleaner in the way they bring in players (i.e. not 50 each summer). A person with the focus on the future, because remember, Monchi and Emery on their last run out were signing players of an average age of 27 years old. Give me someone who is looking at 17-23 years old. That requires more skill. You need to have better data, sharper contacts and you need to have a little more belief to make that approach work.

Marc Overmars, despite what the flat earthers say, has a pretty excellent resume. He’s overseen the rebirth of Ajax with some of the legendary Champions League vanguard. Ajax has just churned out the best generation of players in years… they signed Frenkie De Jong for 1 euro! ONE EURO. Whatever they’re doing, it’s exciting. I think it’s hard to look at Marc Overmars job title and not think he’s been pivotal… unless you think these things happen by accident.

Luis Campo seems like the real gem in the market. I know that Lille is a super ambitious project, but I’m struggling to see why no one mega has come in for his services after what he achieved at Monaco. An absolute star who has the utmost belief in his abilities.

Where are the weird C.V.s though? Who are the guys and girls behind the scenes that are growing elite players off the back of mice? That’s what I need to know…

Mesut Ozil is bantering the whole of Germany hard… he’s invited Erdogan to his wedding. What more can you say here? We’ve been over it a thousand times, but seriously, you can’t knock him… that is trolling of the highest order.

Right, short one today, see you in the comments fam. xx

It very much sounds as though Raul wants all of the power and is trying to hire someone in under him to do all of the work and take the fall if the project fails. Guys like Monchi, Overmars, Sven are not stupid. They know how it works. You let a guy like Raul set up a power base in your club and, unless there is strong oversight and governance, he will run riot. Now it’s panic stations, it seems likely we will turn to our internal options if only to avoid further embarrassment. Whatever happens now. This is a… Read more »

For me I’d suggest arsenal recruit a major CB and winger and make the rest of our purchases bargain/under the radar/youth sorts

We should offer 50m for koulibali and see if they blink. I’d be willing to see us go to 70m for him if it’s what it takes. Then whatever is list spunk it on a good winger and we’ll be 10-15% better next season

Smart bargains can make another few percent

China1

I’m not impressed with us offering the role to someone internally most of us have never heard of and with no record of sorts to his name

What makes this guy qualified? Being willing to say yes appears to be the only criteria you have to meet these days…

Thanks for putting everything into perspective.

All this DoF/ Minister of Defence stuff is doing my head in.

I’m sure Malcolm, down at the Dog and Duck, could do a reasonable job.

Who knows?

I know it’s not exciting but why not consider Steve Morrow in the mix as technical director? He already is head of scouting for the U23s and they have recently recruited very well… and this is the age we should be targeting if we’re short of cash. Reiss Nelson AMN Iwobi ESR Nketiah W.illock Morrow brought them all to the club. Iwobi has done well, and AMN shows promise. W.illock, when called upon has performed. If we are as restricted in our transfer funds as we are led to believe, we will need someone who knows how to bring players… Read more »

What about Paul Mitchell? He’s presently the director of recruitment of RB Leipzig… with experience from Southampton and Tottenham. 🙂

I think we are trying to implement a German style approach to Football Management. The Technical Director will be in charge of recruitment of Manager, players, style of play, contracts etc. While Director of Football will be in-charge of overall football operations which will include logistics and non technical related stuff as well. But the issue here has to be the roles and responsibilities assigned. It should not overlap or in any way be diluted so as to render the whole exercise as confusing and not result oriented. This is my personal opinion but since Mislintat (Head of recruitment) was… Read more »

Leeds Of those players only Nketiah came to the club when he was older. AMN was 6, Willock similar, Iwobi 8, ESR 10, Nelson 9. How much credit can you give Morrow for that? Also do we want to wait 10 years for the next crop? All this put our faith in the youths bs is making me worried about the sanity of some of our supporters honestly, we’ve seen it so many times before. How many actually makes the step up from youth to senior football successfully, and on a level good enough for the Arsenal? Not many. It’s… Read more »

I’m sure all supporters would be happy if the youngsters made the step up from our youth academy. But History suggests that it is likely not going to happen. Not with our current setup anyway. Say what you want but the league has moved a few levels in terms of overall quality. Going ahead, the only way i see the youth academy making a difference or contribution to the senior team is if they are closely integrated with each other. Like, in terms of the style of football expected to be played at Arsenal FC. This is what has made… Read more »

This Pallota blasted Monchi’s comment is very revealing. Maybe it’s best for Arsenal. “Roma chief Pallotta has hit back, insisting that he handed over complete control of the club. I was kind of surprised to read Monchi say at his press conference that he wanted to go one way and I wanted to go another way,” Pallotta said in response to Monchi’s comments. I appreciate that Monchi never set out to fail at Roma but I want to make something very clear: right from the start, I was very clear about the direction I wanted us to go in and… Read more »

He didn’t only fail at Roma but he also lacks ambition if he’d choose Sevilla over us

We need someone with fire in the belly to get results not someone who is happy with average

Seriously though, how hard can it be to get someone in to scout and bring players in? Why are we the only club making a big deal out of this whole thing?

HighburyLegend

Because our club was run very badly during more than a decade ??

Frankly I am not all that concerned whether Arsenal appoint a Technical Director, because I think that we have already got plenty of senior management on the books. At the end of the day we have got both Sanhelli and Emery to make the final decisions on players, which are needed and contracts to be signed. What the club needs is a Head Scout to replace Mislintat. That means someone who is on the coal face with first class contacts in the strategic markets where we should be looking for players. Personally I don’t think that Overmars was that person.… Read more »

Bringing players is easy. Bringing the right players at the right time for the right price is hard. You need first to identify the right player in term of position, age, mentality, price, expected salary, attainability. Messi maybe the GOAT, but there is no way we could get him over Barcelona. Once you have identify your target, you need to be able to convince him, his club and his agents to join you at the cost (price, salary, bonus, agent fee, …) That you find acceptable. Once he joined, you need to put a place a program to integrate him… Read more »

Freddie Only time will my friend. If we’re as tight up as it is being suggested we will need to develop our own players with transfer fees what they are. Unless Kronke decides to drop a billion or two, we just can’t rely on going into the market and bringing in talent. In any case, we need to stop this constant navel gazing and get on with it. If it was up to me I’d rather not let Mislintat go full stop and would have brought the three of them together Raul, Sven and Vinai and instructed them to sort… Read more »

Why not give the role to Bould? Since he’s done such as good job of tightening up our defence he could now focus his talents on player acquisition.

Pierre

Surely our manager must have an idea of which players he wants in the summer ..The club shouldn’t fall apart because we haven’t got a director of football or whatever he’s called.

Why don’t Arsenal just employ Marko as he seems to know and has an opinion on every player in the world .

Nelson

I find that most fans are shooting in the dark. We don’t know how many scouts Arsenal already has all over the world. I also read that there are already people such as Steve Morrow and Francis Cagigao, who are doing similar work in London. Football is a very big business. It appears that the club is looking for a “CEO” in the scouting department who manages all the scouts, analyses the data and provides recommendations. The actual assigning of players will be Raul’s decision.

Left test/Highbury,

There’s clearly a mini-PR campaign to remove egg from Arsenal Senior Management’s face after the Monchi/Overmars debacle.

Still, provided that our transfer plans are indeed at an advanced stage, the continuing difficulty/delay in filling the Technical Director position shouldn’t matter much.

This is a position where “results” and outcomes only emerge in the medium term, I.e. after 2-3 years. You don’t construct a philosophy in a day or indeed a season.

As Pierre, Emirates and others have pointed out, in the short term, it is only the Manager who really matters.

Nelson

I agree that the club should take its time to appoint the right technical director. He should have the special sauce and has the vision to shape our future. There are so many factors to be considered. We know that KSE is not going to invest his money. We can’t sign players freely like MC, Manure and Chelsea without much financial consequence. We have to develop young players and sell them to add funding to our transfer budget. We also have to be competitive and play in the CL. After Wenger left, we have a good opportunity to start fresh.

Leedsgunner

No to Valencia. For the right wingbacks we have Bellerin and AMN. Bring on Jordi Osei Tutu as their understudy next season.

Arsenal PR machine in full swing.
Articles telling that Suarez will be sent back to Barcelona.
Pundits praising Özil and his new attitude under Emery. Emery is then credited of having played a blinder in his treatment of Özil and Ramsey.
Journos claiming that the job of DoF that was so top of the agenda last week is suddenly irrelevant for this summer transfer window.

That sudden flux of feel good stories are not coincidental. The club is trying to deflect from the mess and bad image projected by our fruitless pursuit of a DoF.

Looks like Abramovitch is desperately trying to sell Chelsea but nobody is biting at his selling price. I wonder if this is the end of the great era of Chelsea as next season could be really tricky: banned from buying players. Best player Hazard either gone to Real Madrid or sulking before his Bosman leave at the end of the season. Likely to play in the Europa League Owner trying to sell and so refuse to invest any more FiFa new regulations limiting the number of players on loan killing Chelsea business model of piling up players. Abrahimovich has to sell Chelsea…and I don’t blame him.

I think he was very badly treated by the British authorities when they demurred on renewing his work visa. It was intentionally leaked that he was denied to shame him until he had to formally withdraw it.
You don’t treat a guy who’s poured at least a billion bucks in the UK economy that way, regardless of the thawing of UK-Russia ties.
Did they think he was going to covertly apply for the dole?

Micheal

“Looks like Abramovitch is desperately trying to sell Chelsea but nobody is biting at his selling price.”

The other major problem makigit difficult to find a buyer is Stamford Bridge. The stadium is far too small and a replacement in hugely expensive West London or a re-build on the existing site will probably require another £800m – £1bn of investment.
Add that to the cost of buying the business and Chelski looks a very expensive and unattractive investment – quite apart from its supporters.

Dissenter

*regardless of the freezing of UK-Russia ties.

Danny S

Ive seen on sky football news that Steve Morrow is being touted as the new Technical director. From the times apparently.

Valentin

@Dissenter,

I wholeheartedly agree with your point. Abramovitch has been very shabbily treated.
He was used as an example of the new frosty UK-Russian relationship for all the other oligarches.

However I don’t think that will have the expected affect. If anything that will even send them to apply for bogus passport such as Cyprus, Malta and Monaco residency.

Once they have those papers, it would be quite difficult to withdraw entry to them. If UK did, they would then just move to Monaco or Paris.

Victorious

Monchi rejecting us really serve for a rude awakening of where we’re right now as a club,i mean it looks a drastic punch to the scrotum and a complete reality check of how low we’ve fallen, still he’s gone about it in a totally disrespectful manner He has no right coming out in public with stuffs like that, very arrogant and razz Looks to me a bullet dodged given how he’s gone public in his dismissal of our proposal, I mean that was totally unprofessional and unacceptable, not only as he succeeded in painting our club in bad light, but might just… Read more »

@Michael, I am not saying that Abramovitch is an honorable man. I think that he is a just a shyster. However that does not change the fact that he had been shabbily treated by the UK government.
