Arsenal kids shine as January window looms (Thierry/Patrick, are you watching?)

by .

AMN looking like he’s just realised he’s left his Facebook Messenger tab open with a jealous GF at home

Ok, so not much of a match review to drop here. Qarabag wasn’t much of a match for a very young Arsenal squad. Mesut Ozil single-handedly destroyed them with an assist for Lacazette who finished like a bloody king!

My only moan before we land on the good stuff is this: Why would you play Lacazette and Papa in a pointless game? We have so many major games coming up, that felt really sloppy. Especially considering Mustafi and Holding dropped from the last two games.

Arsenal dominated the evening with 67% of the ball. Just the mere presence of Laurent Koscielny reduced Qarabag to a pathetic 0 shots on target. It was great to see the old stalwart in the side, hopefully, he’s fit enough for the Southampton game at the weekend where suspensions/injuries are leaving us very light at the back. Monreal and Kos looking the most likely partnership (oh my).

It was great to see Eddie, Willock (who runs like Thierry), Saka, AMN, Gilmour and Medley all land runs outs under the bright lights of The Emirates.

Saka missed the chance to become our youngest scorer in Europe when he drove the ball into the face of their keeper Wagner. That said, he had a very impressive game for someone of 17. He’s very strong and direct. He was a real handful all night. The manager was very positive about him.

“We have the responsibility to give every young player chances, first to train with us and to be demanding with their performances.

“Saka played with a good performance, with a very big personality, his personality is very important for us to continue trying to go 1v1 and break lines with his quality.

“He played with a very big personality and sometimes with a very good performance. It’s very important for his confidence and for us also, because we can look at this player and see quality to help us.”

He had 11 successful take-ons yesterday and was fouled 5 times in the process! He also managed to land 3 shots on target, a little timid, but at least he was having a go. I love the way he opens his body up for shots, a little Thierry-ish. His confidence is something else, here’s hoping we see more of him in the future.

Mesut Ozil created 4 chances, he played well. I’m not sure I want to go too crazy about our best player having a good game in the Europa League, but it’s worth highlighting that he had a great attitude and didn’t shy away from the donkey work.

Also worth noting that Joe Willock racked up some numbers. He made 5 tackles, 6 ball recoveries and rocked an 89% pass completion rate, delivering the second most passes in the final third behind Mesut Ozil. Not bad going in my opinion, I really love his confidence on the ball, and, did I mention, he runs like Thierry?

Final shoutout goes to Eddie. He was unlucky not to land a couple of assists, but his hard work contributed to the first goal and his attitude was spot on. The energy he brings must be a nightmare if you’re an opposition defender, he dropped 5 tackles as well, I really, really want him to break into our first team.

The best thing about all these young talents is that you know the manager has a plan for them. These guys are going to max out at Arsenal, if they don’t, it’ll be because they’re not good enough. I think there should be some strategic loans in January, we need these players out on the pitch playing games. We have options as well. Germany is a very fertile ground to learn your trade, incredibly technical coaches and a good level to cut your teeth. Ligue 1 is up there with the best leagues in the world these days, and we have Thierry and Paddy out there… surely we’ll be leaning into them to help players like Smith-Rowe find the next level?

Per Mertesacker is going to make sure the players understand Arsenal values and how to be a proper professional, Emery will make sure they are trained properly. Could be a very fruitful few years. Sancho was a £9m player, now he’s worth x10 that. We need a few hits like that, long overdue in my opinion.

Right, that’s me done. 22 games unbeaten. Southampton next.

So close, yet so far.

With Sokratis being suspended for the weekend, I wasn’t surprised that he played. It also provided Emery an opportunity to see how Kos and him would play together.

HighburyLegend

“he had a great attitude and didn’t shy away from the donkey work.”

It’s gonna change soon enough.

kenyangunner

Why would you play Lacazette and Papa in a pointless game?

For Papa,my guess is that it was probably to ease pressure on Koz

HighburyLegend

Probably just as soon than this weekend :
“Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey could return at Southampton on Sunday, Unai Emery said after Arsenal’s Europa League win over Qarabag.”

Ozil still a part of Emery’s futur plans ?? Must be a joke…

Mysticleaves

Papa won’t play at the weekend so playing him there was the best IMO. I didn’t watch the game but from the previous post, some people really put down the performance of the young guns and were generally pessimistic about their chances of making it with us because of lack of quality. Now Pedro comes around and brings my hopes up all again. For the record, I hope all of the make it here. Though I feel for AMN. It’s not so much about playing 90mins every 3 days. There’s a lot of training in between and the fatigue builds after 2/3 months of all that. And once it’s there, it’s really hard to shake off except through lenghty rest and just doing a different thing for a while.

China1

Pierre what with you disliking people who critique arsenal players I like to hope you equally dislike your own willingness to find fault with emery from the start of the season

You little moaning Michael you!

Bob N16

Mystic, no need for any negativity about last night, they all did okay against a meaningless opposition. Getting home debuts was more than enough for three of them, with the others all showing signs of promise. No more can be said.

China1

And whoever it was implying that people are harsh because he’s just coming back from injury – no. If he had been an excellent player over the last season, got injured and came back in his first game less than stellar people wouldn’t say shit. Why do people always act as if history never happened when it comes to certain players or managers. Besides a handful of games, ozil has been miles away from good enough for the best part of 18 months. How many good games has he had this season? Maybe 3? 4 at the most. We’re halfway… Read more »

We had a very promising youth team a few years ago that looked like it could feed the first team for years to come…and that turned into an absolute clusterstink of bilge.

Let’s hope project youth mk II is better handled than the last one.

Other than that, quarkbag were dealt with as they should be. Well done Arsenal.

If ozil was a cat he’d be on his 14th life by now but people still think he deserves another chance

What are peoples thoughts on Elneny?

He earns more than Torreira, has no commercial pull, and isn’t capable of fleeting genius. Curious why no knives are sharp for him..

Eduardo

Emery wanted to give Lacazette some minutes to keep him sharp, apparently. Makes sense to me.

Incredible to see Koscielny smile like that afterwards. It looks like a weight has been lifted from his shoulders. The absence of a certain someone from the touchline surely helped!

Marko

He earns more than Torreira, has no commercial pull, and isn’t capable of fleeting genius. Curious why no knives are sharp for him..

Because he’s not really a hindrance to the first team or the squad he’s basically someone who you forget is there who sits at the kids table at Christmas while Ozil is the belligerent uncle who ruins everyone’s Christmas. I mean are you happy with what you get from the sponge or is it simply you hate any Arsenal player facing criticism and feel like you HAVE to make excuses? Elneny will be gone soon enough anyway

Mysticleaves

Like so many people have stated, Guendouzi, Esr and AMN (and to a small extent Willock) already negate the need to keep El Neny around. I think the club will be looking actively to move him this winter and he must have been informed about it.

Marko

I also love how certain types hate it when Ozil’s wages are always brought up but they’re more than happy to bring up his commercial pull.

China1

Kos is one who doesn’t need to play a blinder every week to get respect because he has been an excellent servant to the club and has given his best for a very long time If kos looked rusty I’d be the first to give him a break As for el neny, almost every fan I know is happy to sell him. What next? Advocating he gets booed when he plays??

China1

Give the man a break? Poor lad

He’s having a tough time isn’t he ozil. Not only is he paid 350k a week, but fans such as yourselves set low expectations for him to actually perform. Better yet his life is so hard that he’s managed to spend thousands of hours playing video games whilst the team he’s paid to be a leader of was burning around him last season.

We don’t need to pretend or ignore or imagine the salary isn’t there. It is. And it’s a total disgrace – much like his lazy attitude frankly

Marko

I’m not sure any criticism Ozil gets is ridiculous especially if you look at how he’s played the last two seasons and continues to play. Compared to the criticism that other players get it’s totally warranted. It’s not like people are making it up

China1

That Ozil is still here on mammoth wages is not Ozil’s fault

How about his performances on the pitch and the effort and desire he’s showing is it okay to criticize him on that? This past month he’s only played 83 minutes against Qarabag. Is this acceptable

Why is it the vast majority of people can see how he varies wildly from world beater to entirely anonymous for months at a time in either direction

Depends on the opposition and their game plan. He is not a fighter, never has been, Jose called him a coward at Madrid. You get in his face it throws him off, i am not excusing that by the way, but to suggest he was some warrior even at Madrid is being dishonest

So what level is ‘his pace’ exactly?

I am afraid you will have to re-phrase that

Receding Hairline

Why do you have a problem with a squad member who barely plays getting 55,000 a week but are okay with a key starting player regularly playing poorly getting 300,000 a week?

Because the 55k can be better invested in someone with an interest in playing i guess and regularly playing poorly with regards to Ozil is a bit of a stretch, we do not have any other attacking midfielder in our squad with half his talent or ability, you get angry when Pierre mentions chances created so i wonder what exactly you want from your number 10, crunching tackles??

China1

It’s entirely in your imagination that ozil doesn’t have the ability to be world class beyond just his assists because he has had lots of amazing performances throughout his years. Unfortunately those were in the small minority and the rest he has regularly been a shadow of the player he can be Ozil can find space, turn his marker inside out, see two steps ahead of most players, has amazing vision and one of the best passes in the game. This Ozil debate is tiring and no matter how the Oziltologist spin it, Ozil remains more of a liability than an asset. Those who support Ozil (Pierre, ES) judge Ozil based on the football of 4, 5 years ago. Football has moved on and Ozil hasn’t moved with it. Receding Hairline

To be a top midfielder in 2018, you need to have an all around game (attack, defend, press et al) and Ozil doesn’t have that in his locker.

Did he have that before his new deal??

Marko

Dunno why people continue to go to bat for the guy. He averages about 4-5 goals a season the last two seasons he’s had 9 and 8 assists and you’ve only to watch him in matches to see how little effort he puts in and how little he cares for being at Arsenal. I just don’t get it it’s make believe and more hope than expectations with Ozil these days. Sure we’d all love it if he played every week or most weeks like he did against Leicester but that’s beyond wishful thinking

I don’t think people will care that he doesn’t press if he dominates games in his own way, which he is good enough to do Ozil is one of the most naturally gifted players of his entire generation. Whilst bergkamp was better, mesut could’ve been in the same universe with a better attitude Bergkamp wasn’t built for a high press either but let me ask you, if you put 30 year old bergkamp in this situation do you think he’d have struggled and attracted a lot of criticism? As far as I’m aware, most or all of us who are tired of ozil would also happily sell el neny in a heartbeat. Nobody is talking up a potential 25m move for el neny and selling him wouldn’t free up wages for 2 fantastic signings’ future wages so most people just take him as less consequential and concerns themselves with him less But again, most of us would sell el neny in a heartbeat anyway, so it doesn’t… Read more »

Azed, true Ozil has touches of genius but doesn’t fit in.

Any chance we can move on from discussing Ozil or am I in the minority that feels this subject has been talked about enough.

Elneny, shall we all sharpen our pitchforks and surround his house?

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather.. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.

Did you hear about the crook who stole a calendar? He got twelve months.

Could always wax lyrical about a guy failing to nail down a place after ten years and periodically call various posters jobless because of the frequency they post, or subject matter they offer up. Not everyone is in your elite company you fucking loofah

At least follow the thread, nobody has said keep Ozil he’s priceless. Pierre, arguably his biggest fan, said quite plainly that if Ozil doesn’t fit with Emery’s plans then he needs to get moved on.

Rambo, not sure anybody is suggesting Ozil should not be traded in, think some feel he could still make a contribution this season, others appear to think he’s somehow toxic. Shit, on same subject!

Yes, I have to admit it was so refreshing. Dare I say a huge weight has been lifted off his shoulders by the departure of you know who.

Ok, I know he’s back playing again, but I sense he is enjoying being free from the chains and shackles of playing under Wenger and all the frustrations and negativity that had consumed the club these past few years.

Just a passing thought.

About a month before he died, my uncle had his back covered in lard. After that, he went down hill fast.

What we have is China saying Ozil was playing out of his skin this time last year to secure a new contract and then we have Marko saying that ozil has been rubbish for 2 years …….confusing
