2nd half specialists, but what does it mean?

by .

I am not going to lie, I think Sky do a great job with stats. Super simple, exploratory and usually insightful.

Their latest piece shows the stark difference between our first and second halves this season. We’re ranked 19th for 1st half performance and 1st for second.

The conclusion points to improved fitness and the tactical fluidity of Emery. He’s made 14 half-time changes so far this season, Wenger made 9 in the whole of last season. That’s some aggressive change management.

Now, you can look at this positively, and say we’ve been crying out for a manager who can change things during the game. Or you could say, how the fuck does he get it so badly wrong in the opening 45minutes?

I can’t give you an answer as to why our opening 45s are so poor, but I think the key point is we’re dealing with it at the moment. I actually think there’s something really interesting from a strategic perspective in the early changes. You simply don’t know what you’re getting with Arsenal. We’re finally unpredictable. We’re playing a slower version of NFL playbooks this season. We’re rocking two sides essentially, and the second side you play is countering your stratagems in real-time.

This approach means that unless you’re playing a very sharp manager, other coaches are going to struggle to adapt. I think that’s a smart move. The longer-term vision for Emery is that he can train his sides to adapt during the game. Pep Guardiola is the best in the business at this, he can roll with 4 systems in a half, prodding and poking until he’s found the weakness his incredible players can exploit.

Arsenal fans have been so starved of innovation, just having a halftime video analyst feels modern (not Boro sitting in the stands). Sven M was rocking that role 7 years ago. Arsenal needs to move the players’ education and execution approach to levels where the coach can move things around after 10minutes and make a quicker impact on the game when things are going poorly

Either way, our players are fitter (8th to 1st in the league for distance covered) and we’re a smarter overall outfit. That’s great news for the season ahead.

There are strong rumours Ozil is now ready to return to the side, Qarabag is apparently being earmarked for a return.

I couldn’t be less interested in this game. I don’t mean to be a party pooper, but the Europa League group games are almost as shite as international breaks. I cannot imagine there’s going to be a major turnout.

So that’s why we won’t be landing Dembele on loan this January. What a goal. A shame that Spurs progressed against a pretty poor Barca team, but that could benefit us freshness wise in the second half of the season. The longer they’re in the CL, the better the chance of them tiring and breaking down.

Right, that’s me done today, see you in hell.

Also, look at this funny meme you could use to show off your shit judgment.

Can someone please explain why anyone — i.e., Victorious — would be rooting for Arsenal to lose this or that match at this stage in the post-Wenger project? How exactly would this benefit Arsenal Football Club?

I can understand why someone might have hoped for losses during the late Wenger era — when losses might have brought about Wenger’s departure and thus progress for the club, whereas wins might have meant more time for Wenger and further stagnation and decline for the club — but I fail to see why anyone might hope for losses now.

Can anyone explain this?

Nelson

I was watching Nelson, Sterling and Sane on the same pitch. They are all very fast. Sane is the best dribbler. He can suddenly explode and run by a defender easily. Sterling is the most dynamic. He appears on the wing and inside the box. I think Nelson should model his game according to Sterling. He needs more confidence when he has the ball.

Nw9 gooner

Come on people ok Vic has reneged but we will miss his sometimes inane comments and the follow ups. So let him be

Well done to our U18s in their FA Youth Cup win over Northampton… 2-0. Apparently Vontae Daley-Campbell was the outstanding player. We need to tie him down, he is the natural heir to Bellerin in my opinion if we are going to go for an internal promotion.

TonyD

Almost perfect summation Sancho would have been right on the money if you’d gone plural and have added a ‘S’ to include Pierre, as both continually share that accolade.

Couldn’t possibly include CC in that because (last post) he’s a self confessed Samurai although I’d have booked him more of a butter knife myself than shades of ‘Grasshopper’ not breaking the rice paper.

CC,

Didn’t you say you were in the entertainment industry a while back? Something to do with theatre maybe? Or am I getting confused with someone else?

Maybe you (or whoever) was taking the piss somehow.

My apologies if it’s not you I’m thinking of, as even if it is your line of work I have nothing against that. Would be a little jealous. More fun than a bloke with a science degree working as an electrician that’s for sure.

TonyD

Goobergooner

Goobergooner

I have definitely thought of that. Would be unreal. I’m going to do a master’s of electrical engineering after I finish my apprenticeship, as I want to get into working on renewable energy sources. Play Kos, Özil and Ramsey for 45 mins, secure the win, but no more than that. The priority has to be Southampton on the weekend.

With a new manager on the case, the Southampton players will take the game to us, knowing that their jobs are on the line. They will be very hard to beat with their backs to the wall.

China1

Yeah this Southampton game could be tough but let’s see it through and find another win

Here’s to hoping.

Southampton has often been a tricky game for us even without a new manager syndrome.

I have faith in Emery to get the job done.

Al

Surprised no one really mentions Saka. He is the real jewel in our academy.

Hope that he starts tonight because he is the wide tricky player we are dying for.

gambon

Saka looks a good player, bit at 17 years old he really could end up being a League 2 player if the next few years don’t go well.

Nelson is the one to get excited about. 6 goals in the Bundesliga at 18 years old is something special.

Bit worrying that he hardly ever starts, and I’d live to know the reason why, but there’s no doubt he is one of the best 18 year old footballers in the world.

raptora

Pool away and Fulham home are actually on 29th and 1st – Saturday and Tuesday respectively so it’s standard 2 full days rest.

The caraboboo club vs Spuds would be interesting if we play anything close to our best team or not. Would speak about Emery’s priorities a whole lot.

Leftsidesanch

Batistuta,

Yeah I’m also of Nigerian descent, this stuff will never end. That Chelsea fan on Saturday was just dim enough to do it infront of cameras in an angry rage at a player.

This “Brit teeth” poster took it upon himself to post such an ill advised, offensive statement here too. I regularly am witness to it. I think its even worse that the people who make these remarks to me think its okay to do so because they believe I’m of Carribean descent or my favourite one – French, as if that makes it any better.

Leftsidesanch

Usually I wouldnt highlight that Rap, but in the context of how many games we will have played in that period – we can only hope that we come out of it unscathed.

Our players are dropping like flies. I think I read even Smith Rowe is unavailable for tonight. Would have been a good game for him to get more minutes/experience.

Leedsgunner

Saka is an excellent player, if you have been reading Jeorge Bird’s excellent blog, this is not news. I’ve said so ages ago! 😉

I hope the boys get the job done tonight. It’s not a foregone conclusion, this game is a banana skin like all the others. As with the Vorskla game, I hope W.illock has another game to remember. Eddie did well too, linking all the attack play nicely… I hope hope he ends up on the scoresheet and shows Emery what he can do!!!

Wait, so we don’t have more soft-tissue injuries than is average? If so, then obviously the point is moot. Regardless, I do think Emery should think a little about how much the team is running and whether a different (non-pressing) approach might make sense in certain matches. However, the bottom line is that Emery is a smart, hard-working, competent manager who is up-to-date on the latest everything: if we are dealing with more injuries than we should, I don’t think it’s on account of some failing on his part.

If we are looking for reinforcements I would seriously look at bringing in more Uruguayan talents.

To be fair there’s not a lot of Uruguayan talent outside of Torreira, Gimenez at Atletico,Valverde at Madrid and Bentacur at Juve. All at big clubs already. Except for the excellent Maxi Gomez at Celta Vigo he’s an excellent striker and young who I believe Atletico are trying to snap up. We should certainly continue to look for South American talent something special about them

Cheeky 3-0 to the good fellas is my call for later on.

The young blokes have a lot to prove still, and there is a few places in the first team that can be obtained by whoever takes the right chance.

Should be damn exciting to see how these players develop over the next couple of seasons.
