Electric winger on the radar

by .

Xf3MTHhqYE

OK SO I WALKED PAST PIRLO.

Man, what a fucking babe.

That hair is more elite than his career.

Incredible moment. I shared a pavement with him.

Did I consider saying hello? No way. You gotta play it cool. He definitely doesn’t know who I am, but if he saw me again he’d say, ‘great job walking past me, real breezy, let me buy you a beer.’

I spent some time at the weekend watching a bit of PSG vs Rennes. Thomas Tuchel’s side isn’t clicking quite yet, but it was interesting watching Rennes. They have a young squad with a highly rated coach. Their stadium was packed and very loud. One of their star kids coming through is Ismaila Sarr. He’s tall, fast and a reminded me a little of an early days Dembele (who is about the same age). Anyway, we’re being linked with a move for him by The Mirror.

Seems highly likely we’d be interested in him, we’re really lacking explosive pace and skill out wide from someone who knows the job. Could be an exciting move if he carries on his trajectory. He has 3 goals in 7 matches this season. Last season he managed 5 goals and 5 assists in 27 games. Not bad considering he had an injury that kept him out for 3 months (be real, the injury makes him more appealing to us)

Petr ‘great hands’ Cech trash talked Wenger.

What? He did.

“What we lacked in the past – I would say the ‘Arsenal way’ was more important than getting the points sometimes, and this is not how you win the league,”

“Sometimes you need to make sure you win an ugly game, when you are not playing completely well but you just dig deep, close the back door and win 1-0 no matter how.”

Fair shout, there’s no doubt that Emery knows how to win a game ugly, he’s done it five times on the bounce. Now, do I desire sexy? Yes. But let’s not pretend Wenger was winning ugly or sexy. Arsenal has been a drab ship of misery for 10 years.

These words on preparation were music to my ears.

“It comes from the preparation, the everyday work and from the manager’s way of playing the game as well,” Cech said. “We work very hard every day to give ourselves the chance to compete with everybody and hopefully it will be working even better than it has been for the last four games.

“He is very demanding and this is how you improve. I think the place has become much more demanding in every way so this is great to see because this is what initially drives everybody forward and gives you the kind of kick that ‘I’m not doing enough to start the game’, or ‘I’m not doing enough to keep my spot in the game’, because the manager asked for precision and hard work every day. This is how it should be. We have very healthy competition and we are actually taking the benefit of it.”

FEED ME THE GOODNESS OF A MODERN MANAGER.

There was a half-interesting analysis of Ramsey in The Times. It kind of read like the sort of person who’d been given access codes to Opta but only watched 2 of our games in the last year.

‘RAMSEY HAS CREATED SOME CHANCES, the difference? The manager’ <ish

Errr, sure, but the difference is he’s playing as a #10.

The article referenced how Ramsey has more assists and goals than Ozil over the last 30 games. Again, looks great on paper, but Ozil has been a fucking car crash for the last 30 games, struggling with being miserable and having a back problem.

I’d LOVE to think Aaron is a magical #10, but I’m struggling to see that come to fruition. I’m certainly not convinced after two assists (1 accidental) with zero goals to his name. Some say he’d be a nightmare at the base of midfield in the Xhaka role, I’m not so sure. I thought he looked pretty good next to Arteta back in the day. Would it be fair to say Torreira is a little Arteta-ish?

Could be the Xhaka disdain talking, right guys? How can I be so mean to someone who plays so many wonderful balls into the final third!

We’ll see, it’s really not my problem, as long as we keep winning ugly, I’ll have to keep my big mouth shut.

That said, after being pilloried for daring to say I can’t see the vision Emery is offering, people are dropping that same line everywhere. It’s like I cleared the way. The Guardian and The New York Post piped up with similar musings.

Brentford are up on Wednesday, should be a grudge match after they beat us convincingly in preseason. Emery will want to avenge the savaging, and he’ll no doubt want to give Leno a nervous twitch by forcing him to keep a clean sheet and bag and assist. Should be fun.

Right, that’s all I have today, thanks for popping by. Listen to my damn podcast.

Tielemans isn’t doing badly this season, that’ said I wouldn’t like to see another Xhaka type signing, a carzolaesque midfielder with defensive awareness would be great like Thiago alcantara(65m) lol

Dream10
Watched a few games of his I agree with you, but we need a goal scoring wideman and their arent many around these days, a younger Marco reus would have been ideal. Ousmane Dembele is beyond our reach now except barca see Pogba as a more important peg in midfielder .

Marko

Difference is dissenter he’s been doing it for over two seasons now whereas Torreira was making his first start so no not the same. Also no Ramsey and Ozil and Bellerin and Mustafi get their share of criticism so no Xhaka isn’t a scapegoat he literally gets called up on everything. Also I don’t think if Emery played Iwobi instead of Ramsey that would have made a difference in Xhaka’s first half performance

Marko

Also noticed that no criticism was aimed at Torriera after referee Moss ignored his potential 2nd yellow card challenge …just the sort of challenge that Moss twice red carded xhaka for

Oh shit were you talking about the Digne challenge? Where Torreira literally pulled back and didn’t touch him and the cunt pretended that his shin was in half? Embarrassing really. Yeah had that been Xhaka…

KAY Boss

Alexis Sanchez not performing is no news or new. Most players who left Arsenal and consistently spoke against the club or force themselves out don’t get going after their wish is guaranteed. Nasri, Cesc, Clichy, Adebayor, Hleb, Petit, Overmars etc.
A winger is a must sign come January because the lack of width is clear for all to see.

Leedsgunner

Xhaka, due to his past record invites criticism from people who choose to focus on his past and and transpose it into his playing style now. It’s as if they are choosing to look into a tunnel.

As for me, I’m willing to see what Emery can do with him. If Unai can accentuate his strengths and minimise his mistakes — that’s millions saved right there. The asme goes for Bellerin and Mustafi… let’s see what they can do under the new manager.

Leedsgunner

HighburyLegend

“that’s millions saved right there. ”
lol Leeds are you Arsène in disguise ??

China

I’ll give emery a chance to work on xhaka and co. Like he managed to get two quality halves out of him which is two more than arsene. I won’t hold my breath though.

Marko

Leeds we are waiting it’s all we can do right now. But no he’s not going to save us money the opposite in fact

Receding hairline I agree but I wouldn’t give 200m to spend on signings with the amount of players Arsene wenger(O Lord bless his soul,) the squad is in shambles but it all lies at Unais feet he needs to get his 11 sorted, then on to the market to move out the undesired On Ramsey Hes 27 now and we still don’t know what to do with him ,says a lot about him …I saw a passing map of our play against everyone and he was well ahead lacazette ! Leeds, All the players can get a clean slate, but if you see Xhaka with the error for Cardiff’s goal, then in Sunday he had another lapse when we should have conceded because of him again, there are several ways to get the situation: 1. Manager is responsible for not removing the mistakes out of his game; 2. Player is responsible for making the same mistakes time and time again; 3. Oh, but he had a top corner vs Cardiff and a fabolous free kick vs Newcastle. Imo, it’s 2 time and time again. And I don’t think that he… Read more »

It should also be noted that the Everton player was also on a yellow and should have been shown a 2nd for trying to get another player sent off.

Receding Hairline

Digne is an Ex-Barca player , getting opponents sent off comes naturally

Dissenter

Xhaka will continue to start until we get a midfielder who has ability to pass like him.
Ramsey lacks it.
El neney has a congenital foot defect that limits him to side ways passing.
Guendouzi may very well show it over time.

Xhaka has legions of mistakes in his games, all of which have been highlighted [and I mostly agree with] but not even Ramsey cannot play his role.

China

Also does it really surprise people that xhaka gets jumped on when he was gash for two straight seasons?

Like how many second chances to prove himself does he really need to be given before we’re allowed to criticize him?

We’re not talking about a player who has just hit a little rough patch of form. We’re talking about a player who in two years has never found good form…

Pierre

Raptora I did say potential yellow card challenge..I have said previously that the player wasn’t touched but Torriera sort of did a Gael cliche and made himself look guilty by holding his hands up and looking at the ref. My point is that xhaka would have been criticised for allowing himself to be put in a potential red card situation by making the challenge and to be honest ,the 2 straight red cards that Moss had previously given xhaka were debatable and have remained a cloud over xhaka as people often refer back to those red cards and his indiscipline… Read more »

Xjaka is not an all round central midfielder.

Until Arsenal get one of these in the team then they are not going to threaten the top of football.

Improvement matters not when he doesn’t have the overall tools.

China

It’s like wondering why people jump on welbeck when he misses from 3 yards out. It’s not a one off or an exceptional instance. It’s what he does. If Henry missed for 1 yard he’d be forgiven because of the ridiculous number and quality of goals and assists he got.

You have to actually earn that respect from the fans. You can’t just play like fucking potato for 2 straight years and be indignant when people give you a harder time about it than better players

Pierre

Raptora
“Your point being what? That Moss is as biased as we are?!
There was not the slightest of touches on that tackle. It should have been a yellow card for simulation. Ugly dive. Ugly.
Torreira managed to calculate it or maybe stop himself in the right time.”

I have copied that reply because ,if it was xhaka instead of Torriera making the tackle ,there is no way you would be defending xhaka with such ferocity …..no way

Ishola
” Xjaka is not an all round central midfielder”

I agree 100% with this statement in a literal sense. but it really means nothing beyond being a tool for sophistries

However it’s also correct to crucial to point out that;
We don’t have an all around striker/attacking player
We do not have an all around attacking player on the team
We do not have an all around goal keeper

You can make the case about EVERY player on the squad.

All players have their strengths and weaknesses. The manager needs to find a system/combinations that is based these strengths.

Ishola70

Midfield is very, very important Dissenter for a team. The most important because it has consequences for defence and attack. This is something you seem unable to grasp. Arsenal sort their midfield out and the team as a whole improves. And the midfield doesn’t improve with a physically limited “specialist” in it. You have already underplayed the importance of midfield before when you said the GK spot was the most pressing concern in the team. You were wrong. You were wrong because you continually downplay the utmost importance of central midfield to a side. And god knows why you keep… Read more »

True. Because like China has just said, you’ve got to earn the fans respect. Torreira is an exciting little player that I enjoy watching so far. Hopefully he keeps playing well. Xhaka on the other hand…

Holy Hell Torreira is nothing like Arteta. Worst comparison ever. For your next trick you should compare Bendtner and Aubameyang. They’re both strikers that got moved out wide at Arsenal so they must be just alike right?? Not surprised your opinions are lining up with the msm after that little pearler.

Ishola70

Dissenter

Arsenal need an all round central midfielder in the side.

If they get one in the future then there is no need at all for Xjaka because he doesn’t offer protection and he can’t dictate a game from central.

That’s how much worth Xjaka is.

Pierre

Marc “It should also be noted that the Everton player was also on a yellow and should have been shown a 2nd for trying to get another player sent off.” Agreed …basically moss decided to ignore the challenge and the blatant play acting. Unfortunately sky intimated that Arsenal were fortunate to still have 11 on the pitch in the interview post match. What I find strange is that they never showed a clear view of the incident which indicates to me that he never touched him as it would have been a major topic of conversation if the proof was… Read more »

Torreira is more like Flamini, but from the little I’ve seen, he might have a bit of Santi Cazorla in him. We might have a real player in our hands. Someone that can, as I said, reach Kante’s level meaning absolute world class.

Slight mis information there don’t you think .

He’s been at Arsenal nearly 2 and half years with 2 very debatable straight reds.

With those who see the Brentford game as a nice little tough fixture that should be competitive…. I concur.

That’s why I’m going. Hoping to see a bit of youth but Emery taking it seriously. Welbeck MOTM if he starts.

Pierre

Gonsterous
No one really knows what has been offered if anything…. They may have been trying to sell Ramsey but he is digging his heals in …he doesn’t have to go anywhere as he is under contract and could be using the situation to his benefit.

Alternately ,Arsenal may have offered him a new contract but he is biding his time as he knows that he is holding all the cards.

I think Unai is trying to see if he fits into the team, and it just isn’t working, his reported 250k demand should be saved for a more deserving player coming in to replace him.

Ozil on the other hand needs to get a run of the 10 position before i judge him.

These Xhaka arguments are similar to the ones I made to support Giroud several years ago here.
People will come on here and just babble like Giroud had no strong attributes. It was all about who could call him a worse name to describe how bad he was.
It’s become glaringly obvious Giroud wasn’t that bad after all.

The same way people will come to realize that Xhaka isn’t as bad as is being made out.

gonsterous

dissenter

we’ve been past this. everyone knows what Oliver is good at but what he is not is a goal scorer. Some thing Arsenal needed since the departure of RVP. If you want to employ Giroud as the ST, you need goal scoring wingers like hazard, or griezman or mbappe or sanchez. Then he becomes useful.

Pierre

Regarding Ramsey, this is I believe how it works and whichever way you look at it, the situation doesn’t look good. In January Ramsey is allowed to sign a pre contract agreement for a team in Europe meaning no fee received for Arsenal. At the end of the season Ramsey is out of contract which means no fee for Arsenal. Ramsey signs a new contract which will probably mean we will have to pay him a massive wave …probably 250,000 a week or thereabouts. In January Ramsey is sold to a premiership club for.a reduced fee …15/20,000 or thereabouts but it… Read more »

Dissenter Xjaka may improve individually this season with Torreira alongside him and that pairing is the best that can be offered up from what the club has at present but it’s not the real long term point is it. The long term point and what people want to see on here and fans is Arsenal challenging at the top. Yes ,let’s see ozil as our no.10.

To be fair to Emery he isn’t being overly stubborn with his team selections and tactics.

He is now starting Lacazette and Torriera…I think his next changes will be ozil at no.10 and Mhkitaryan on the right (I’m hoping anyway).

Tactically he isn’t sticking rigidly to playing out from the back and the high press as he probably realises that we don’t have the players for it .

Would just like to see the full backs play a little more conservatively .

You’re spot on with your comparisons with Giroud. When he was here it was literally a turn-taking exercise in who could call him all the names under the sun and dramatically overstate how he wasn’t fit to wear the shirt. He was fit, always was, and it wasn’t nearly appreciated enough.

Note how some of those same guys now talk about him with greater reverence since he’s gone on to play well for France and Chelsea.

Pierre

Bellerin and monreal both in the opposition box without adequate cover ……under Allegri it wouldn’t happen .

Ishola70

Dissenter

Midfield is crux.

Stop downplaying it.

To remedy that area will see progression quicker.

Arsenal have been throwing money on attack because they don’t have the overall finances to throw money at all areas.

It’s no good throwing money on fullbacks, wingers and such if the heart of the team the midfield is off.

These areas need to be addressed but midfield sorting should take precedence.

Michael24

VicVic

These players are now only communicating what we all knew.

Why are you surprised by this?

Leicester won the league with drinkwater in midfield, how about you stop pretending that Arsenal would transform if we replaced Xhaka with someone like Rabiot.

There is a weird fixation with Xhaka, how about the totally useless Elneny? Same position, offers absolutely nothing, but no it’s Xhaka that needs replaced apparently. Seems replacing the poorest players you have is too old school for some..

Pierre

CC
Giroud is without doubt a decent player with a quality touch around the box but very frustrating at times….the strike force we have now is much more effective and mobile .

I have belief in the new manager and I’m very sure he will get us to play better than we do at the moment,Unai is a Tactician, he reads the game and his team,he’s the type to prepare for the opposition,at the moment hes trying to implement a Blueprint , at Psg in his first season he had them playing very good possession football barring that Barca game were Neymar,Messi and Suarez came to battle, and now tuchel isn’t fairing better than he did to me

This is all for future of course.

Champagne charlie

Pierre

Giroud is a very good player, and I disagree. Imo we’d have been better off keeping him and spending the Auba money on a wideman like Mahrez

Mahrez – Laca – Mkhi is more balanced than Ozil – Laca – Auba

We’d also have Giroud as a plan B, instead of Welbz

Another fact we appointed a manager who went into half time in a European cup final against the better Klopp a goal down, came out for the second half and completely blew him away to win 3-1.

I have said before that it looks like Emery uses his no.10 as more of a first line of defence rather than a creative force.

We will always score enough goals with aubamayang,Lacazette,Mhkitaryan, ozil and Ramsey …..let them do what They do best but why not build a structure and a base for our offence to flourish instead of playing… Read more »

Cesc Appeal hit the nail on the head regarding Arsenal’s Midfield. Until we replace carzola we cannot get the outcome required for Emery’s tactics to flourish.

For now we Emery must find the Midfield that works efficiently else Arsenal will get a spanking when they play liverpool.

The akb are really full of shit. Hundred and one thousand chances for master wenger.

Emery doesn’t even get 7 games

Pierre

Here come the AKB jibes…..

Heroism in golf???

That’s something an old dear who jumps out of her wrinkly skin every time the post office door makes a moderate slam, would say!

Heroism playing on manicured greens with everyone sworn to silence and someone to hold an umbrella over their head!
WTAF?

Pierre

Hillwood..you can’t educate the uneducated so wouldn’t even bother trying.

What should I have compared Golf to?

Horse Riding?

Pierre

Maybe heroism is.a bit much …their lives doesn’t exactly depend on it .

Emery’s vision cannot be fulfilled until we have a balanced team.

As of now, we have no midfielder who can travel with the ball or beat his man. Mikki is the closest we have to that and I don’t think he should be a starter.

We also have no wingers.

The balance in our squad is unreal.

Golf is just a great sport to watch and participate in ,but that is just my opinion.

PierreGiroud is a very good player, and I disagree. Imo we’d have been better off keeping him and spending the Auba money on a wideman like Mharez

Cc

Spot on.
I’d have kept Giroud, without a doubt. Really underrated player. One of the few who truly cared and played with his heart on his sleeve. Yes his finishing was frustraimg at times in tight games but emphatic in others. Said as much a few days ago and the usual suspect lined up for a lynching

Do you not back emery? I know (like me) you defended Wenger but you’ve got to back your boys.

I get what you’re saying regarding 424 so why not adopt the 433 he normally uses
Tell Ramsey to temper his attacking instincts a bit and play him as more of a Lampard type breaking from deep or guendouzi-Torreira-xakha as a trio?

Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang wide supporting Lacazette and ozil-iwobi-Welbeck on the bench
