Ivan G annoying the Arsenal hierarchy (welcome the club, Sir Chips)

by .

IMG_1383

Well, I didn’t realise it was an international break, which is super unfortunate as I’m back in the UK next week.

What also coincides with a really irritating break in the schedule is a total lack of news, so why not re-up the Ivan G story? This from The Times.

Arsenal would almost certainly put Gazidis on gardening leave should he choose to leave to join a European rival despite the fact that he has a 12-month notice period in his contract. Milan’s owners are understood to have offered Gazidis a stake in the club having been taken over this summer by Elliot Management after the former owner Li Yonghong failed to repay a debt to the American company.

Paolo Scaroni, who was deputy chairman of investment bank Rothschild, is the club’s chief executive, but Gazidis has been targeted as a result of his work in nine years at Arsenal. The 53-year-old is also an influential figure in European football as a result of his position on the board of the European Club Association as well as being on several Fifa, Uefa and FA committees.

Arsenal are confident that they have structures in place to enable them to thrive without Gazidis, but his departure would be a blow to Emery, who was appointed on his recommendation with the pair having daily meetings throughout the summer.

As I said the other week, the big difference between Ivan at Arsenal and Ivan at Milan is he’ll be getting a chunk of the club there. If he grows it, he’ll grow his bank balance and retire and even richer old man. Good for him.

Not great for Arsenal though. Apparently, Ivan is on 12 months notice, which seems odd if he’s on a contract, but whatever. The fact that he’s even considering ducking out of the Arsenal project before he’s seen it through is a touch grim, but some people work for greatness, some for the pound notes.

I thought the paragraph at the end was pertinent. Emery certainly has a friend in Ivan G. From what I understand, the rest of the backroom team was impressed by other candidates and I’ve no doubt the ‘we all took a vote’ was an absolute fabrication so Ivan could spread the blame for anything that went wrong with the appointment further down the line.

Now Emery is being cast away into no man’s land. I don’t think that’s very fair. A new CEO comes in, everyone looks to fill the power vacuum, hierarchy changes, favourites get promoted and demoted, it could be a real mess. The big worry for Emery is this… the new CEO is likely going to want to make his own impression, and it’s very unlikely he or she will have loyalty to the Spaniard.

Very shitty. It’s also a kind of shabby that Ivan has let it get so bad that people from within the club are leaking they’re irritated with the process.

Before I leave you, the Nike Colin Kapearnick advert that’s dominating the internet at the moment is quite incredible.

Firstly, well fucking played Nike. The reality is, you invented capitalism for sports shoes. Anyone who thinks it’s a hot take to say Nike is trying to sell their product off an advert needs to have a word with themselves… they’re a publicly traded company, of course they’re trying to sell things. That’s not the point though. The point is, there are easier ways to sell shoes than alienating 40% of America. Nike is backing a modern day civil rights hero, while Jack Dorsey is overruling his staff to keep Alex Jones on his platform. Yep, the guy who runs Twitter is personally fighting to keep a man on his platform who harasses the parents of kids who’ve been massacred by gun violence. Tell me what flavour of capitalism tastes better?

Not a lot of brands have the guts to go against ‘the base’, Nike did. That isn’t brave, I’ll reserve that for people that put their lives on the line for things like forest fires and their country… but it is bold.

Secondly, if you’re the sort of person who burns your trainers or socks because the brand you follow did something you don’t fancy, throw yourself into the sea. You are insignificant. Political correctness is pretending you matter. No one should indulge you.

Thirdly, I know there’s this weird deep-state-ish view of advertising people like we set out to restructure the world around unnecessary consumption, but the reality is this: it’s just a group of creatives boxed up in a room who want to put a brands influence to something that matters. The folk who concocted a campaign that supported a black man who’d lost his playing career age 28-29 for taking the knee for a national anthem wasn’t about profits,  it was about doing something that fucking mattered in this world.

DmMVEk3WsAACHq1

Fair play to those advertising folk. Those that used their jobs to make an impact. The people that pushed their client to take a risk that would change the conversation and maybe have a positive impact.

Right, that’s me done. Listen to the podcast. It’s what you need.

Join Kurtis, Matt and I for a rollercoaster ride of excellent chat.

Also, if you’re a regular reader, don’t be selfish… leave a 5* and a totally terrif review, ok? The least you could do imo.

Guardiola recalled the first coaching job of his career. After losing his first friendly on a small artificial pitch against Banyoles, his Barcelona B side opened up with one win from their first three matches in Spanish football’s fourth tier. The whispers began and the Catalan media were not the only ones wondering whether he was cut out for the job. “On Monday I thought I had to change because we could not play in that way,” he said of the week that followed the third of those games, a 2-0 defeat to a tiny Manresa side who were relegated… Read more »

Forget a period of stability and steadying a ship that massively lost it’s way – let’s just pluck for an unknown quantity because there will be excitement apparently. For me, it’s too early to cast the season as a write off and if we were opting for managers with minimal credentials or experience – you could pick through tons of managers actually bothering to learn their trade rather than a glorified cone put outer.

The AFC fan-base are generally a strange bunch, its thought processes like this why you see why we are derided so often.

Guns of Hackney

Any gossip regarding our new CEO?

Gazidis is so instantly replaceable I think we should stop referring to him immediately.

I concur with Peter though, this puts Wengemery in a tough position – like it wasn’t hard enough.

God, Arsenal are such a poorly run business it’s almost unbelievable…but it isn’t, because Arsenal have reinvented what incompetence means in sport.

I just do not see anyone within the club who actually cares enough to make the moves that would allow us to compete.

If Ivan wants to go, just let him go.
I would imagine working constructively if critically with the new manager would be a pre requisite for anyone new applying.
Ivan has helped carry out what was needed , he deserves credit for that but we can live without him, especially under the new regime, and in an environment where Wenger won’t be interfering.
Still have a hunch he might stay though , unless he really is just about the dollar, in that case we are better off without him, too much of that already at this club.

Leftsidesanch

You have to hope that Leno inspires enough confidence to get a start if we will persist with the current playing system because Cech’s apprehension with the ball at his feet makes everyone else shaky including the crowd. Newcastle will pick up on that, and they’re a more potent outfit than Cardiff were who could have had a few more goals were it not for wayward shooting. It’s been said enough so doesn’t need to be mentioned but we know who needs to start and it’s time for Emery to make life a little easier for himself by figuring out… Read more »

We have been poorly run, but believe we are about to get a lot better now . New execs, big improvements in staffing and facilities behind the scenes, wengers merry men gone. Wenger isn’t there blocking things that threaten his power base. Stan must also be aware he made a big mistake, he won’t admit that publicly but he did ultimately fire Wenger, actions speak louder. Leftside,
We’ll probably lose points vs Newcastle. If we get the win I’d be surprised but if we do get it, it would mean a significant work was done at the training ground and by Emery. It would make me significantly more optimistic for our season’s future.

Pierre From previous post. What’s wrong? Because I made a general comment about Arteta, you have a go at me for highlighting several days back that you’ve been off playing golf. When it comes to personal issues, away from AFC, I will try not to be disrespectful or sarcastic. Whatever we may think there has been over the last 12 months quite a revolution at the club. Kroenke is buying out Usmanov and taking full control of the club. The senior management and coaching staff have all changed in this period. We have renegotiated sponsorship deal with Emirates, and secured new sponsorship with Rwanda Tourism and by all accounts with Addias as well. If the rumours are true then our combined sponsorship from these three deals is £100 million. The playing staff has also been changed with 10 new recruits for first team squad and the offloading of much… Read more »

I’ll settle for a five star performance at Newcastle that can have my vote!

englandsbest

Gazidis has been busy these past nine years . Not with Arsenal – heaven forbid – but with getting himself on every football committee that will have him. It is reasonable to suppose that it was self-interest. Perhaps he wants to be head of Uefa or maybe Fifa.

I guess the Milan offer caught him off-guard. Does he take the offer or does he stay the course or can he do both?

I believe most of us would be happy to see the back of the slippery PR man.

Michael24

Of course it’s down to “self interest”.

The guy is a leech.

The club would be better off without him.

Just watching a replay of the Cardiff game, they produced very little in honesty. The few chances they had were from us giving the ball away.
Cut out these sloppy giveaways and games will become easier for us.
You could see after 20 minutes cech stopped going short with the passes and the team settled down.

Rewatching the game I can see why xhaka stats look so good.

On two occasions in five minutes, lacazette gets the ball near the oppositions corner flag, he passes back to xhaka to cross in and instead he passes back to Monreal and then soktaris, when’s there’s arsenal players in and around the box.

It’s always a safe pass, its like arteta all over again.

Michael24

Buckhurst Gun

Gazidis epitomises everything that has been wrong with AFC since 2006.

Self indulgent, arrogant, disrespectful, ignorant, weak, embarrassing, flawed, deluded, patronising and condescending.

As you highlight, “Good riddance”.

The fact that Voldemort is neither rated or loved by either AKBs and WOBs, speaks a ton about his reputation among our fanbase. The only one supporting Voldemort was Pedro who, by the looks of it, finally saw through the slimy bastard’s well spoken words. As a last fuck you, he gave Ozil this ridiculous contract that’s going to handicap us for years coming. Utter disgrace of a CEO.

Kaepernick was a busted backup that couldn’t win the starting job at the worst team in the league when he started getting on his knees. It’s called perspective and Pedro you have none when it comes to the NFL or the United States. Nike’s going to lose a lot more than 40% of America with this move. Not a sound business move any way you look at it. Nike has chosen to support criminals over the police.

David Smith

If Ivan goes, we move on, if he stays, he can help modernise the club, we can see what he can do without Wenger.
They just need to sort this quickly , especially if reports that Emery is unimpressed are true, the last thing our new manager needs is further instability.
The longer this goes on, I believe the more chance Ivan stays .

Jamie

Nike has already won.

Run a ‘controversial’ advertising campaign, appear on front page news without paying for the ad space. Slick as fuck.

They aren’t losing anything. Right-wing American morons burning merchandise they’ve already paid for to ‘send Nike a message’.

Divine,

To understand the Nike ad is to understand why players in the NFL are taking a knee during the National Anthem before each game. The movement was started by Colin Kaepernick in order to highlight police brutality against black people in the States. Angry white men think he’s un-American for peacefully protesting.

raptora

DS,
The guy is a quarterback that in 2016 chose to kneel on one knee rather than stand while the American national anthem was being played before the beginning of every game in a protest against racial injustice. Afterwards a lot of afro americans followed his gesture. Same year he didn’t renew his deal being an average player from what I’ve heard in the worst team in the league. None of the other teams signed him so he filed a grievance against the NFL for being blackballed because of his on-field political actions.

Alex Cutter
