#10 issue about to be resolved + You won’t believe what LA thinks of Stan K

Big game today, Arsenal face Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City away from home. For the Bluebirds, it kicks off a trio of nightmare games for them, with Chelsea and City following our visit. It could be a gloomy run for them if Arsenal bring some of that destruction football we’ve yet to see land season.

Unai Emery has his own batch of issues to deal with. Firstly, he hasn’t won a single game away from home. No big deal, he’s only played one, but when you put the issue against the backdrop of our woeful away record in 2018 (we’ve lost 8 of our last 9), it could be a problem if he doesn’t bag three points today.

The main theme of the day will no doubt be Mesut Ozil and the drama he’s faced over the past few weeks. The manager has gone to bat for the German, stating he was in fact, very ill. It took a week to concoct an excuse deeper than just ill, then when it landed, it was stated that he had a highly contagious disease (with the club curiously allowing him into the dressing room). Our manager had this to say on the matter.

“For me that is one thing; I don’t stop during my career for everything that the news says about me or the players. But in this situation with Mesut Ozil it is clear, he is OK, he has the commitment we want, he is a very important player for us and we want to help him to give us the best performance in each match and each moment.”

Regardless of what the real story is, this is a chance to see what Emery does with a fully fit Ramsey and a fully fit Ozil.

Does the Welshman continue to play as a number 10? Does Ozil find himself moved out wide right like he is for Germany? I’d hazard a guess and predict yes to both questions. The modern #10 needs to work hard for the team, and in Emery’s 11, you have to be able to deal with the tasks that you’re handed. Admittedly, Ozil isn’t going to be tracking the sublime Jorginho today, but he’ll still have to do a job. If the future is Rambo at #10, let’s start building muscle memory by positioning him where he’ll play for the Liverpool game in a 7 games time.

Additionally, Emery needs to settle on a midfield he can keep on the pitch past 45minutes. We should see a start from Torreira, and I’d say he’ll likely continue with Xhaka in the starting 11. The Swiss isn’t my favourite player, but it can’t be denied that he looked far more effective  when he had a real DM sitting behind him doing the dirty work.

We’ll also have some interesting decisions up top. Does the manager continue with Auba through the middle? Does he bring the sparky Lacazette back into the fold? Or does he just admit he made a huge mistake with his strikers and go with Danny Welbeck.

The dream for tomorrow is that the defensive methodologies start to sink in. We haven’t looked comfortable at the back since preseason began, and it’s unnerving quite how poor we’ve been, even against West Ham. No team has conceded more shots on target than us, clocking an incredible 24 thus far. Cardiff hasn’t managed a single goal so far this season, meaning we’re absolutely ripe to go a goal down after 9 minutes. We’ve conceded 4 goals this season before 30minutes has played out, we need to make amends today and start building confidence. Emery just need to go classic Sunday league…

‘Lads, keep it fucking tight for the first 30, then let’s build from there. Tommy, stop smoking, and please don’t call the ref a fat c*nt today.’

Finally, before you go. How’s this article for making you feel a little ill.

The signing of Aaron Donald to the richest defensive contract in NFL history Friday was a triumph of the Rams’ greatest force.

That force is the guy who will pay him.

In capping off a wallet-purging offseason that has cemented the team’s championship hopes, Donald was guaranteed $87 million as part of a $135-million deal that celebrated the Rams’ most valuable player.

That MVP is owner Stan Kroenke.

In his three years since moving the Rams back to town, Kroenke has made an impact larger than the giant defensive tackle himself, larger than all the stars he has made rich, as big as any Los Angeles sports business leader since Phil Anschutz stuck a shovel in the ground that Staples Center sits atop. Kroenke has not only been the Rams’ biggest force, but a force on the entire local sports landscape, spending, building, growing, committing.

He gets Los Angeles. He understands its fans. He knows what works, and, man, he’s been working it.

Shame when he bought Arsenal, he did nothing of the sort. He let us flounder in the mud with zero investment. In the U.S., it seems he’s found his mojo, inking massive contracts whilst dealing with the $3billion the Inglewood stadium cost him to build.

Listen to this carry-on.

He said he would build the Rams into a team that will compete for championships. That is also happening. With Kevin Demoff, the chief operating officer and vice president of football operations, and general manager Les Snead working the controls, they have put together a team favored by some to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

“It all starts with Stan, he has the vision,” said Snead. “He empowers us. He expects us to bring that vision to fruition. Then he steps back and lets you do your job.”

Donald was only the finale of a string of big contracts and acquisitions that filled the summer. Not only do the Rams now have the highest-paid defensive player in history, they also have the highest-paid running back in Todd Gurley. When you throw in the signings of receiver Brandin Cooks and tackle Rob Havenstein, Kroenke agreed to pay $198.7 million in guaranteed contracts that could wind up being a $306-million payout.

Stan empowered absolutely NOBODY at Arsenal for 10 years as he fawned over Arsene Wenger like a teenager put in a room with peak Thierry Henry. Absolutely disgusting that finally, Stan has realised how to become a ‘franchise owner’ and the club he’s dishing out the 20/20 vision to is based in L.A.

Fuck NFL. It’s going down the toilet anyway. Who the fuck is going to put their kids, as young as 8, on the path serious injury, and maybe even death? Real football is the future, and that’s a fact I just made up.

Imagine if Stan had the same passion for making Arsenal great 10 years ago? What a different story our football lives would have been…

Right, enjoy the game, I’ll see you all in the comments.

all the goals we conceded today was due to players mistakes. Do we blame the manager for that ? I would say no but I know the anti emery crowd would disagree. Torreira was good, want to see a torreira gwen partnership and see how it effects our midfield. I thought ozil was anonymous again. Ramsey was awful. Mustafi had one of his better games but it’s only cardiff. Laca and Auba were lethal with the world class finish but apart from that they couldn’t link up or do anything good. Nacho wasn’t up to his usual standard. Over all… Read more »

now all I need is graham on Aftv and my weekend is complete, and no lads, I didn’t get laid this week.

Leedsgunner

We’ve played awful in both games but we’ve come away with three points in each. We’re winning ugly. Let’s hope Emery is using these wins to figure out what his best team is… and not just delude himself into thinking all is ok.

Michael24

gonsterous

Did anyone take Wenger’s quotes seriously?

Leedsgunner

Graham is by far the most articulate and informative commentator on AFTV … we are getting away with it rather than playing well.

NW9 gooner

It’s strange how people castigate Ozil- we are much better when he plays – see the difference in our attack against West Ham . Problem is Ramsey- we need a disciplined midfielder there –

Cesc Appeal

‘we are getting away with it rather than playing well’

Agreed.

No skill in terms of controlling a game or in defence.

Torreira drastically improved us.

NW9 gooner

Michael I am as Wenger out as you but I think you are going overboard- you are just the opposite fulcrum to V, Pierre etc

Marc

Will someone please tie Xhaka to the rear of the team coach and then drag him down the M4.

Bamford10

TR7 I’m glad you conceded two of the three points I made, namely, that one, we don’t have any one particular style at the moment, that we are in fact a team in search of a style; and that two, there is nothing fundamentally un-modern about the 4-4-2. As for your point that my view on Lacazette / Aubameyang was different six months ago: yeah, you’re right; it was. Do you have a point? Are you of the opinion that a person’s views should never change? I hope not, as such a view would be fucking idiotic. A reasonable person… Read more »

NW9 gooner

Yes Torreira is a good player- like Kante in anticipating the play and good on the ball. If he develops, he could replace Xhaka’s breaking the line role and he is better defensively.

raptora

“we are much better when he plays – see the difference in our attack against West Ham”

I don’t get this comment.

Ozil looked ill when he got substituted. Pale and not looking healthy. Could there be a bigger problem in there? Like a serious sickness? Hopefully not, but either way he shouldn’t play. If you cannot make things happen vs Cardiff with absolutely zero responsibility in defence, then why even bother?!

Wallace

any time you win away from home in the PL it’s a good result. see Man Utd at Brighton. two quality goals from our #9s, but sounds like we’re still defending like a drain. only seen the goals so can’t really comment on anything else yet.

KAY Boss

Why do some blame Cech if he can’t play from the back? Emery gets this blame there.
All goals considered is none of Cech’s fault.
Sokratis in particular put Cech under pressure with his constant back pass while Cech’s under pressure from opposing players.
It’s a 6.5/10 performance from the team. Özil was okay. But Ramsey, o boy, he dey make my blood boil with his too many touches with the ball.
We shall definitely come good.

NW9 gooner

Burnley showing how Europe affects teams in the PL- playing Thursday and Sunday is no easy task . We will have a clearer picture once the CL and EL start. For us specially as Emery will have a great chance of trying his system at lower risk matches

Marc

Things we’ve learnt over the last couple of games.

1 – Torreira must start
2 – Xhaka must not be anywhere near the team
3 – Ramsey is not a no. 10 either start him in CM and tell him to be disciplined or bench him
4 – We need some serious basic defensive drills

raptora

Just heard that
Lukaku 104 goals 224 games
Drogba 104 goals 254 games

NW9 gooner

Raptora weren’t we better against Cardiff offensively than against West Ham at home? Ozil is a very intelligent player -he creates space for others like very few can .Agreed he has had a few bad matches in the chances created area but he keeps the ball moving .

Valentin

Tactically we were better because Guendouzi was sitting lower. However we were still giving chances away that against a better team would have resulted in goals and potentially defeat. Cech is becoming a liability because of the ridiculous decision to ALWAYS play from the back. That has to stop before we concede goals. Other teams will use the same tactic and will score from a mistake. Today We got away because AFC had better strikers. In particular Lacazette was playing like a man possessed trying to prove a point to his manager. I said before that Xhaka cannot play with… Read more »

Bamford10

Raptora

That may be the case, but you have to look at the kinds of games in which those goals were scored. One thing that made Drogba outstanding was his ability to score big goals in crucial moments of big games. See, for example, his great header to level things against Bayern in the 2012 CL final.

Marc

Oh yeah

5 – Laca gives us far better balance when he’s on

Cesc Appeal

This team is so unbalanced and has so many passengers or people who just want to do one thing and not contribute to any type of system that Emery basically has to find a system that may not look great on paper but that just works and gets us to the UCL. That way next summer with new commercial money and UCL money we can strip this team and build in what we need. I don’t see a long term future in this side for Xhaka, Ozil, Ramsey or Mkhitaryan, not with what Emery wants to do they just cannot… Read more »

Up 4 grabs now

Four games in, 6 points playing a new system with new players, it’s not a bad start. Emery now has two weeks with the non international players to tighten them up again and to improve. He who shall not be named left emery up shit creek without a paddle. We had city and chelsea to start, and probably should have beaten Chelsea if we had taken our chances. Winning whilst playing poor, I’ll take that. Let’s see how the team evolves over the next 6 or so games before we tackle the bindippers. Just one thing, i think I know… Read more »

Marko

Xhaka’s breaking the line role

…he does little to justify starting while on the flip side he’s such a defensive liability that he shouldn’t be anywhere near starting.

Valentin

Burnley did not qualify for the Europa league, so teams that have played them have benefited from the fact that they did not have time to prepare for their next premiership game.
They will slightly be deflated, but they I’ll bounce back.
I am still wondering how AFC is going to cope because the squad seems to be lighter than last year. No Coquelin, no Giroud, no Nelson, no Maitland Niles (injured until November), no Kolasinac, …

Cesc Appeal

Also we need to get this whole CEO thing sorted, this is just stupid.

If Gazidis is going just go and let Kroenke Jr take over and let’s see what happens.

Berg

Unbelievable some on here think Ramsay was man of the match. How bad are expectations of some of our fans

Does it not surprise you that even though he is in last 12 months of his contract there isn’t anyone interested?

Marc

Anyone comparing Drogba and Lukaku needs to go back to the halfwits school for football.

Up 4 grabs now

Been calling for playing two strikers for years now.
Can play a 442 in some games but most of the time can be 352.
Three center halves can give us more protection with guendouzi and Thor in front of the defence. Then instead of fullbacks who are always out of position and a midfielder like ozil or Ramsay not tracking back we’re covered, it also means laca and Auba can play together.

Cesc Appeal

‘Anyone comparing Drogba and Lukaku needs to go back to the halfwits school for football’

Pretty hard to, he got sacked last year and no one has given him a chance to start teaching again

Marc

Get in Watford

Marc

Piss poor defending by the Spud’s there

raptora

Berg,
There were rumors connecting Ramsey to Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona and Lazio. Now since none of them came to fruition we will never know if the rumors were real or just lazy journalism. But saying there was no interest from any team is a big stretch especially knowing that afaik Chelsea got Kovacic on loan and Barca bought Artur. Not sure about Lazio since I don’t follow them but chances are that they bought someone in midfield as well.

Marc

Fucking love it

Up 4 grabs now

Cech. Woeful.
Sok. Meh.
Monreal. Consistent. Aging.
Bel. Dire.
Mustafi. Goal. Nothing more.
Ramsay. Tripe.
Xhaka. Usual pap.
Guen. Driven. Capable of a rick.
Ozil. Anonymous. Sick again.
Laca. Best game for arsenal.
Aub. Apart from goal. Zero threat.
Torreira. Tidy. Must start.
Welbeck. Meh.

Arsenal got out of jail against a very poor side. We could easily have lost all four games this season. Worrying times. Emery is onto a loser but he must not pick Ozil, Ramsay, Cech and Xhaka. No. Just no.

Cesc Appeal

Marc

Could end up with a Sanchez situation in January with Ramsey.

The squad is a total mess though.

Guns of Hackney

Also, how shit must our new GK be if he can’t shift on Cech who has conceded 8 goals?

raptora

Watford wanted the win like their lives depended on it. Huge win for them. Spuds thought they had won the game.

“Also, how shit must our new GK be if he can’t shift on Cech who has conceded 8 goals?”:

That’s a very good question, especially when you consider all the mis-kick gifts that Cech has been given the opposition.
I think is’t cloud that’d beeb generated solely by Emery’s management.

We go to two games a week after the break, maybe we will get to see what Leno is about.

Marc

“We’ve got an amazing squad and didn’t need to add in the summer”

Yeah that’s why when you’re chasing a goal away at Watford you brought on Danny Rose on the 88th minute

Dissenter

***I think it’s a cloud that’s been generated solely by Emery’s management.

Marc

Cesc

Someone might offer £5 odd million in Jan but there won’t be any sort of substantial bid. Remember Mourinho will be gone and Utd will be keeping the powder dry for a new manager.

Cesc Appeal

Jesus, I knew this was going to be the season of indulging Ozil. Listening to Emery go on about how hard he worked and pressed etc, what game was he watching? Even the commentator flagged up that Ozil was not working hard enough.

That contract is going to hold Arsenal back for years.

steve

@Guns of Hackney

“Also, how shit must our new GK be if he can’t shift on Cech who has conceded 8 goals?”

£20 million wasted right there.

@Bamford10

“Spurs are nothing special”

Still they will finish above Arsenal.

TR7

Bamford

Yeah so it’s possible you further revise your opinion 6 months down the line and realize what I have been saying all along is correct 🙂

P. S : I post here my thoughts on games and players. It’s immaterial to me what the majority here thinks about a player or a game.

Cesc Appeal

Marc

£5 Million is better than nothing, would rather ship him out and plan to do the same with Xhaka in the summer and then try to get someone like Sanson or Brozovic in January.

The thought of having to see Ozil waddle around at RM though for the foreseeable, f**k.

Joe

Spurs are nothing special.

You expect city, Chelsea and Liverpool to go undefeated ?!

Radio Raheem

I’m no fan of Ramsey’s but I think you guys are being harsh. For the most part he gave us drive and industry, especially in the first half. He gave away a few passes and slowed play down, yes. But that’s just part of the Ramsey package. Ramsey was one of our better players today. Both fullbacks were also decent. Özil better in the second half like the rest of the team. We seem to lack that decisiveness and strength to deal with dangerous situations. I’m not sure if this can be worked on in training or a different profile… Read more »

Wallace

if Emery can’t get his style up and running without changing 80% of the first eleven then he’s not as good as I thought he was. that said, Sokratis looks like a wasted opportunity in a crucial area.

Bamford10

Joe

No, I don’t, but that also doesn’t follow from what I said.

Are you of the view that Spurs are as good as any of City, Liverpool or Chelsea?

Wallace

Spuds are as good as Chelsea.

Sanmi

There’s nothing wrong with our offense, we have played teams that attacked us and teams that packed the bus, we created chances with ease.

Defensively we are suspect:
1. From cech trying to play from the back.
2. From the DM not doing his job.
3. Vulnerable from counters when xhaka plays his across field pass or caught napping.

Solutions:
1. Play Leno or kick the ball high once pressed.
2. Play Torreira
3. Play Torreira

TR7

‘Spurs are nothing special, just as I’ve said many times. City, Liverpool & Chelsea are the class of the PL.’

Please not this ‘class of the league’ stuff again whatever that means. Spurs are better than Chelsea by some distance really.

alexanderhenry

A very good result in the end today.

It’s a cliche, but there are very few genuine pushovers in the PL, especially away from home.

This is a long term project chaps so we have to be patient. I think expectations need to be managed a bit.
Initially I thought top four was a must, but now I’d settle for a slight improvement.

Bamford10

Radio

I agree, though I don’t think Ramsey is in great form at the moment. He is a form player, however, and when he is in form, he is very effective. This is why he led the team in goals + assists per 90 last season and why he was the fans’ player of the year.

Joe

if Emery can’t get his style up and running without changing 80% of the first eleven then he’s not as good as I thought he was.

Completely different style compared to wengers boring style.

It’s also not his fault that Ramsey Xhaka are not as good as wenger thought they were age don’t fit his style of play.

How many players do most managers change in the first 2 years? Klopp? Pep? Jose?

Ramsey. Cech. Xhaka. Wellbeck. Elneny. Can all be sold.

raptora

Manure play Watford away after the stupid break. Pretty weird that Watford are going to have 4 home games in their first 5 EPL games.

Joe

Are you of the view that Spurs are as good as any of City, Liverpool or Chelsea?

They will be up there with those 3 yes. As good of squads? Not city or pool.

But they have a manager who gets the best out of his squad.

Cesc Appeal

Unless Emery is a miracle worker a lot of this team needs replacing, it has a very low ceiling, 4th at best.

Depends on what you want, if we’re stuck in the Wenger era of 4th is a trophy, fine, if you want more then not so much.

Sanmi

I don’t get the spurs and pool (to a lesser extent hype)
Pool has not played a decent team yet this season. They are not miles better than anyone yet. They narrowly won last 3 games (including palace 2-0 defeat)
Spurs on the other hand could have lost man utd game and has not particularly impressed in all 3 other games. Every single team gave them are run for their money.
City on the other hand absolutely blow every team away including wolves they drew.

Un na naai

TR7I’m glad you conceded two of the three points I made,

Bamford

That’s all you care about
You’d rather point score on a football blog than see arsenal win you wierdo

Ramsey is not a form player.

He’s just bang average. End of

He played out of his skin a few years ago for a 6 month purple patch and the rest of the time he’s played at his level

Average.

Just like wenger.

3 good years out of 21. Poor return for a supposed genius.

Un na naai

when he is in form, he is very effective. This is why he led the team in goals + assists per 90 last season and why he was the fans’ player of the year.

Bamford
You mean when he’s allowed to do as he pleases despite the wants and needs of the team? He’s no form player, he’s a selfish player and quite frankly I could do better in central midfield that the gaping hole does

Marc

The Poch really sticking the boot in on ManU – spent all week telling the players we weren’t as good as the hype.

gonsterous

don’t get the attitude in here. It’s been 4 games. city will drop points, liverpool will drop points, spurs dropped points today, chelsea will drop points. We just need to capitalise on them. That’s the hard part. Focus on the team winning and we’ll over take the other teams on the table. Only problem is these teams don’t drop points often so we either have to beat them or cover up when they fail to win.

NW9 gooner

Bamford agreed Spurs have been hyped up by the media here because of the English players and the love for Pochettino- – imagine Rose coming in the last few minutes when you are looking to score. But one thing- the team spirit is great- just see them hurrying in the last few minutes to take free kicks, corner etc

Joe

led the team in goals + assists per 90 last season and why he was the fans’ player of the year.

Our worst season in 20 years and a million points behind the league leaders and almost went without a point away from Jan.

Bravo Ramsey. You bloody legend

Leno, Bellerin, Kolasinac, Torreira, Guendouzi, Xhaka, Ramsey, Mkhi, Ozil, Iwobi, Lacazette, Auba…add 4/5 players to the above and he should be able to play the way he wants to. maybe even Mustafi alongside a more suitable partner.

Sanmi

Can’t wait to see us versus spurs. Their attack is so narrow could play into our hands.
Our full back should press their back.
I see a repeat of our performance vs chelsea, but with no hazard in the opposing team

When Aubameyang joined, most refused to consider his flaws and were asking to get rid of Lacazette and reinvest the money elsewhere. My view have not changed on Aubameyang. He is a good addition to the team, but there were area to improve before the attac. 1) He is not as clinical people think. He needs a fair few chances to score. 2) He does put himself about enough to play as a lone striker in the premiership. Cech is being put under a lot of pressure by Sokratis giving him back the ball because Sokratis cannot pass forward with his left foot. I was no fan of Lacazette before, but he impressed me a lot today. He could prove one of our key players tus season.

Stevegooner

Have to disagree. Ozil has been poor and a waste of money especially since his pay rise. Can you recall a game since he’s been at the club where he’s changed the course of of a game? Can’t see it myself. Aaron Ramsey was superb when he came back from injury for 3/4 of a season. It hasn’t happened since. These 2 are not going to move this club forward. For several months I have been bigging Lacazette up.

For me, he is pivotal to Arsenal if they are to push for top 4.

great to get the result today and to see Lacazette at last partnered with aubamayang and torriera showing.that.he should be starting. Ozil improved as the game went on but was average at best. The way that Arsenal are playing this season the team needs to score three to four goals a match to stay ahead of even the weakest sides in the EPL> We have the same defensive problems and lack of balance in midfield as was the case last season.
