Emery looks for first win

So I had to miss two days of a stag do because of work. I’ve arrived at what I ‘think’ is the destination, but no one is awake. I’ve let myself into a house with no number. So this could be the last you read of me if I’ve made a mistake and I’m camping out in some random MAGA fanatics house in Nevada.

Buuuut, while I’m here, why not pen a post?

Arsenal take on the mighty Chavs who were going to build a new stadium until their owner had his visa revoked. I mean, not that we can brag, our owner is currently prying shares away from Arsenal fans as he prepares to take the club offline as we move into the Silent Arsenal era.

I digress.

Big things to look out for today.

Cech: the manager stated he believes in his number one after a slightly erratic display on the opening day where he was pushed into taking the most touches of any keeper in the league (54 I think). Rumours are buzzing around the web that the club aren’t impressed with Leno, which is quite a sorry situation considering it was very well known he’d had a shite season. Anyway, it’s Pete at #1 again, let’s see how he rolls.

Midfield: Xhaka was pony against City, so were most of the midfield. Will Emery double down on his faith in that 11 or will we see some change? Torreira should come in, but who would move away? Guendouzi who we all forgave for school boy mistakes, or Xhaka who is absolute toilet?

There will also be questions around Ramsey, who was very ineffective outside leading the press. He was yanked on 54, will he get another chance tomorrow? If he does, will the manager rethink the role?

Strikers: Auba has tended to look a touch average against top teams. He’s easily nullified and he doesn’t have much of a hold up game. Will Emery persist with his vision of counter attacking football with one striker leading the line, or will he give us all Lacazette and Auba in an iteration of 4-1–2-1-2? We certainly looked more dangerous with two strikers than we did with one. We also probably look more dangerous with Ozil in at 10.

For me, anything above zero points would be nice. It’s too early in this project to feel hopeful of toppling an excellent Chelsea squad with a very good manager. Our main focus is how we take 24 points from the next 8 games. That’s our build up to a massive against Liverpool in November. By then we’ll have a realistic view of how good or bad our season is going to be.

It’s kind of odd how underwhelmed everyone is so early on in the season. The Wenger hangover is a three day one without doubt. That can either work really well for Emery, because expectations are so low, or it could go badly, because we’ll turn quickly. After reading around the web, it’s pretty clear that the one thing Emery lacks with the fans is an emotional connection. If results go badly, no one is going to fight the managers corner, which is why it’s incredibly important he gets some small wins in early and racks up a run. That might not come today, but it’s going to have to soon because the honeymoon feels like it finished at the airport.

Right, see you in the comments.

“This is now our best 11, with the current squad.”

If you think Iwobi and Bellerin are deserving of a best 11 spot, you sir are mistaken.

  2. Marko

Love Emery love him. Drops Ramsey substitutes Xhaka at half time and replaces Ozil for playing poorly. Ruthless. Love him

  3. TheLegendaryDB10

What an overpaid wanker Ozil is! Just cashing in his huge paycheck. I hope Emery benches him for the remainder of the season. We somehow need to cut ourselves loose from him.

  4. Elmo

How good was it when Sokratis bombed forward there KNOWING that when Chelsea countered Torreira would be sitting deep ready to block them?

  5. Bob N16

Bamford you knob. Iwobi has had a good game. You don’t rate him fine but stop talking drivel. By saying something enough times doesn’t make it have greater validity- that’s contemporary politics, bullshit.

  6. Cesc Appeal

The only worry if Iwobi goes off and Aubameyang goes LM is that Iwobi has put a decent enough shift in defensively and has actually ran with the ball to relieve pressure and drawn fouls.

  7. Sancho Monzorla

Don’t think Torreira was carded for that?

And Torreira has done far more than Xhaka in his time on the pitch, bad comparison for the moment.

  8. Bamford10

Iwobi is completely & totally average; he should never be in our starting XI if we want to be a top four team. I acknowledged his finish, but we need Lacazette on now.

  9. qna

“If you think Iwobi and Bellerin are deserving of a best 11 spot, you sir are mistaken.”

Bellerin most definitely is. Iwobi is just the best of essentially no good options for a wide player. He is the best of all options because he provides decent defensive pressure. Given the other players in the front you can’t afford anyone weaker defensively. We definitely should have strengthened there. A genuine wide player with pace.

More average than Ozil???? Let’s get perspective. Iwobi has contributed more to this game

  11. Frost

Nah Emery’s cleared any doubts I had about him with those 3subs.

Just needs to make the players on the field rn his starting 11 moving forward.

  12. Elmo

It has that Old Trafford Fellaini late goal feel about it with Giroud coming on. Hoping we can get a counter goal instead.

    That Kepa is poor.

  13. Leedsgunner

Loving this positive drive from Emery. He wants to win this. I would love for us to win this 3-2.

That would shut our critics up.

  14. Champagne charlie

Where’s all our sick attacking play that Ramsey was due to show?

Who’s getting blamed here? Xhaka for me on this one, only fair

  15. qna

Why Laca is a defensive liability wide. Can’t play Laca and Auba together, or Ozil and Mkhi together. Chasing the game is a bit different. But at 2-2, should have been Auba for Laca.

  16. London gunner

Lots of work to be done.

    Some positives, many negatives.

Don’t think we make top four unless we invest in jan

  17. useroz

Who the fuck made that back20 yard pass that started the Chelski attack? Auba o Laca??

    3 — 2

    Tats absolutely shocking

  18. Champagne charlie

No Paulinho it was just a daft comment in response to your one about being solid defensively first half.

  19. LegendMax

To those calling for lacazette’s inclusion on the back of one cameo appearance last week, you can see now that everyday’s not Xmas.
he’s basically cost us the game here

  20. London gunner

Both strikers have fucked us this match

Missed a hatrick of sitters today kinda new this woukd end up biting us in the end

  21. zimmie2652

QNA- “Bellerin most definitely is. Iwobi is just the best of essentially no good options for a wide player. He is the best of all options because he provides decent defensive pressure. Since acquiring Licht, Bellerin should not be near our starting 11 anymore. Licht is a much better option even at his advanced age. I will concede that Iwobi has put in a solid defensive shift but he still isn’t the quality of player Arsenal should have ever aimed for. Hopefully next transfer window we can bring in a proper winger to fill that obvious void.

  22. Bamford10

Oh jeez. Lacazette makes one bad pass and now he is THE problem. Give me a break.

The solution is simple: play 4-4-2. We’re not good enough to leave either on the bench, we have a ton of CMs, and we have no genuine wide players. It’s not that complicated.

  23. Elmo

Alonso was passed on to Torreira as he drifted into the area and Torreira gave him a step and then it was too late to recover.

  24. qna

No issues selling Bellerin, provided he is replaced with a starting FB. Licht is too old now. He is a squad player at his age.

Sell Bellerin and Ramsey in Jan and give away Ozil for free.

  25. Bishop

Honestly this team is not good enough…see how they have fallen apart in the second half ..agaisnt city it was first half fall apart.

  26. raptora

Lacazette first gave them the ball then decided to get back and lied to his teammates that he is going to cover Hazard. Hazard saw how disinterested Laca is to do any defensive effort and that’s all he needed. It’s Laca’s fault. No excuses.

  27. useroz

If only Ozil played like 80% of Hazard who took Chelski to the next level since coming on…

Giroud good shot…oops not ours anymore

    C’mon 5 min boys!

  28. Rambo Ramsey

So Arsenal go in strong at half time but fail to make a single noteworthy attack in all of the second half.

Can someone explain this to me?

  29. gambon

I’m done with this season already.

Our recruitment has been the problem for 5 years….and despite a new manager we have the sane failures playing and this is exactly the same shit.

I’ll give Emery a season and 3 transfer windows to make his mark, but I’ve got no interest in watching a team I feel no affinity for.

    It doesn’t look good though.

Don’t get me wrong, with Wenger we would’ve lost both these games, but that’s the point, a new manager should’ve led to a lot of players being kicked out.

  30. TheLegendaryDB10

Does Bellerin have a brain? Why doesn’t he turn it on?

He is probably more thinking about the next fashion event he has been invited to.

  31. TR7

I put my hands up…you didn’t talk about saving Xhaka for Chelsea match. Looks like it’s something I surmised from your reply.

  32. Leedsgunner

Hazard taking the game by the scruff of the neck and driving his team forward. Ramsey (Show me the money) should be doing this… he might lack Hazard’s talent but he shouldn’t lack the desire.

  33. Bamford10

Bottom line: we don’t have a good enough squad. He needs to identify his best XI and today’s starting XI was not it. I think we’re best-suited for a 4-4-2, but we’re going to need to be active in January. We simply are not good enough.

  34. LeMassiveCoq

What the fuck is wrong with Bellerin? Cant run. Cant pass. Cant cross. Cant tackle?

Perhaps he needs a nice juicy fucking steak the silly vegan, skirt wearing cunt.

  35. Arsene's Nurse

Fuck socks. Great game for the neutral, but enough in it for us to at least get a point. Hard two first games.

We have to give the new man time.

  36. Bishop

Nothing has changed ….chelsea haven’t been beating too much lately….

Am not impressed at all. The strikers killed us in this game no doubt.Auba will be lucky to score 15 this season at this rate.

So their coach went in at half time to fine tune them..Ours coudnt sort us out.

  37. raptora

Definitely a lot of positives after this game. I reckon the whole thing will take time but this game should prove that Emery won’t work wonders for players like Xhaka, Bellerin and Ozil. Mikki I’ll add to them as well although there was 20 mins where he kind of showed up. The other 3 are absolute wankers though.

  38. Paulinho

Emery will simply need to ditch Ozil.

Play Ramsey a bit deeper and play Auba and Lacazette up top.

Neither forward is good enough on their own.

  39. Thank you & goodnight

I used to be a massive fan of ozils when he was a youngster….
Now….sell him. The style Emery wants to play just does not suit ozil.

  40. Cesc Appeal

Some positives there if Emery has the balls to actually do it.

No more Xhaka and no more Ozil, try to find a way to get rid of them in January and play them in the Europa League to hold some value.

It will be tempting to play Ozil against West Ham because that is when the fucking pussy will show up to justify his existence. But play the team we’re going to use going forward so that it has a chance to settle.

Emery taking off Xhaka at half time was admitting he made a mistake I think, from now on Lichtsteiner at RB, Torreira and Guendouzi in midfield, Mkhitaryan at CAM, then three of Aubameyang, Lacazette, Iwobi or Welbeck up top.

Another positive was Guendouzi, what a find, what a player for a 19 year old.

No doubt though the spineless wonder and Xhaka will be selected again as we’re playing a team we should beat at home.

  41. Jim Lahey

“I said all along this summer that our recruitment had been piss-poor. It is indeed.”

Our recruitment has been fine, they just need to fucking play!

  42. Guns of SF

    We have no game changers
A third goal in the first half would have helped
    Pea sucked
    Ozil should not start
Iwobi did well and offered some pace and dribbling

  43. Champagne charlie

Bellerin should be dropped, Guendouzi/Xhaka/Torreira is the CM to start matters.

Ozil can sit on the bench, i’d have Auba wide left, Laca middle, and Mkhitaryan.

Emery under pressure because of a shit transfer window, as I stated. Look at the backing the other top managers get when they step into a new job and compare that to our tin pot club. Excuse me, Stans tin pot club now.

  44. Jim Lahey

    @CA –

“No more Xhaka and no more Ozil, try to find a way to get rid of them in January and play them in the Europa League to hold some value.”

    Spot on

  45. Sancho Monzorla

Guendouzi our best player today, again. Team looked so much more balanced after Torreira came on. The team the finished the game except Lichtsteiner for Bellerin is our best 11.

  46. Rambo Ramsey

I don’t care if he scored. Mkhitaryan is a joke of a player.

We aren’t getting anywhere with inconsistent flaps like him, Ozil, Ramsey et al in the side.

Then there’s the consistently shite players like Xhaka, Bellerin.

    Jesus wept

  47. MGooner

The catalyst for change is here.

This year we will compete for the title. The guy who would not loosen the purse strings is gone and the club can now start being a force again.

  48. TheLegendaryDB10

Fuck Chelski scum. They had to win the game.

A lot of positives and some massive negatives (particularly in defence). But this only game 2. I hope that Emery sees the we cannot have Xhaka in the team and that Torreira must be in the game. As for Ozil, I would rather have Ramsey until we find someone better to upgrade.

  49. Paulinho

Might take Torreira a while to settle ala Mascherano.

He seems a bit muted. Probably needs a run of games to start getting more aggressive and snap and snarl higher up the pitch.

  50. raptora

Bishop, your posts today have been absolutely negative. Come on man. I don’t even want to read what you say.

There is hope in this team. Not to become champions obviously.

We were pretty solid defensively in the second half as a whole after Torr’s introduction. I don’t like how deep we went though.

  51. Sancho Monzorla

Not a fan of Mikki either but rather him than Ozil for the CAM spot. He’s a good player in the final 3rd, has a better shot.

  52. HighburyLegend

It was obvious that it would be hugely difficult to take a point from those 2 first games.
Under wenger we would probably have witnessed another shameful 6-2 today.

  53. DaleDaGooner

Hazard comes on and suddenly Chelsea looks alive again. Aubameyang, Ozil and Mkhitaryan and we can’t muster any significant threat.

  54. raptora

I think that Iwobi was our best player and didn’t deserve to get subbed this early. Should have been Mikki and then the third goal maybe doesn’t go in if Iwobi was there. Mikki is a fat slob and just refuses to defend.

    Guendouzi and Sokratis pretty solid.
