Emery looks for first win

So I had to miss two days of a stag do because of work. I’ve arrived at what I ‘think’ is the destination, but no one is awake. I’ve let myself into a house with no number. So this could be the last you read of me if I’ve made a mistake and I’m camping out in some random MAGA fanatics house in Nevada.

Buuuut, while I’m here, why not pen a post?

Arsenal take on the mighty Chavs who were going to build a new stadium until their owner had his visa revoked. I mean, not that we can brag, our owner is currently prying shares away from Arsenal fans as he prepares to take the club offline as we move into the Silent Arsenal era.

I digress.

Big things to look out for today.

Cech: the manager stated he believes in his number one after a slightly erratic display on the opening day where he was pushed into taking the most touches of any keeper in the league (54 I think). Rumours are buzzing around the web that the club aren’t impressed with Leno, which is quite a sorry situation considering it was very well known he’d had a shite season. Anyway, it’s Pete at #1 again, let’s see how he rolls.

Midfield: Xhaka was pony against City, so were most of the midfield. Will Emery double down on his faith in that 11 or will we see some change? Torreira should come in, but who would move away? Guendouzi who we all forgave for school boy mistakes, or Xhaka who is absolute toilet?

There will also be questions around Ramsey, who was very ineffective outside leading the press. He was yanked on 54, will he get another chance tomorrow? If he does, will the manager rethink the role?

Strikers: Auba has tended to look a touch average against top teams. He’s easily nullified and he doesn’t have much of a hold up game. Will Emery persist with his vision of counter attacking football with one striker leading the line, or will he give us all Lacazette and Auba in an iteration of 4-1–2-1-2? We certainly looked more dangerous with two strikers than we did with one. We also probably look more dangerous with Ozil in at 10.

For me, anything above zero points would be nice. It’s too early in this project to feel hopeful of toppling an excellent Chelsea squad with a very good manager. Our main focus is how we take 24 points from the next 8 games. That’s our build up to a massive against Liverpool in November. By then we’ll have a realistic view of how good or bad our season is going to be.

It’s kind of odd how underwhelmed everyone is so early on in the season. The Wenger hangover is a three day one without doubt. That can either work really well for Emery, because expectations are so low, or it could go badly, because we’ll turn quickly. After reading around the web, it’s pretty clear that the one thing Emery lacks with the fans is an emotional connection. If results go badly, no one is going to fight the managers corner, which is why it’s incredibly important he gets some small wins in early and racks up a run. That might not come today, but it’s going to have to soon because the honeymoon feels like it finished at the airport.

Right, see you in the comments.

Spot on about Ozul too CA, guy is a absolute chancer. Impotent little worm of a player against anybody with a pulse, his wages make us look like a laughing stock.

WengerEagle

Anybody else think that Kepa should have saved both goals?

Wouldnt be happy with him if I were Sarri, both shots very saveable.

Redtruth

WengerEagle

I’d stick to worrying about our keeper..

Nelson

What worries me more is not how Ozil plays but Emery’s defensive tactics. First of all, we have Sokratis, who is extremely slow. He then deploys a high defensive line.
He also talks about organization, but we have Bellerín chasing someone in midfield and opened up his side completely. If Emery doesn’t improve his defensive tactics and organization, we’ll give up lots of cheap goals with or without Ozil in the team.

Thorough

Arsenal fans are sooooooo dim! We can’t bench Ozil because he’s on 350 grand a week. What’s next? We can’t bench Guendozi because he’s on low wages. Against top 6, against midtable teams, against relegation fodder, bench the idiat. Let him play 5 minutes when we’re coasting in league matches and see if he won’t go to turkey by the summer.

Thorough

*We can’t play Guendozi

Thorough

And Emry had better stopped repeating Wenger’s misstakes, no midfielders shoehorned into the team in attack, no trying to play favorites into form when there’s a readymade alternative.

Thorough

And because of the frailty of our defense we’ve got to seriously consider 3-5-2. Or at least a 4-2-1-3.
I’ll go for the following for a 3-5-2:
Cech
Papa Mavro Mustafi
Licht Monreal/Welbeck
Torreira Guendozi
Mkhi
Laca Auba

for a 4-2-3-1 I’ll go:
Cech
Licht Mavro Papa/Mustafi Montreal
Torreira Guendozi
Welbeck Mkhi Auba
Laca

Change things around coachie! Jettison underachievers. Make the team all yours.

Emery has been picked to continue wengers legacy.

The players aren’t good enough.

The club ownership are happy with the way things are going.

Three things that tell you Arsenal FC are and will remain an upper mid table club.

We have a fickle fanbase, most on here were bashing iwobi n now he’s the lord and saviour, emery really needs to learn how to press

Over the next ten games or so we will have a better idea if Emery has what it takes or not. Easier league games and europa league ties will give him ample time to refine his formation and system. Maybe he will start aubamayang and lacazette.. Maybe he will get the team playing with some composure at the back and in midfield… Maybe he will try the new keeper. I can’t help thinking that the player we are missing is nzonzi as our midfield is still way too open and is not offering the defence protection. We needed a holding… Read more »

PEA and Lacazette aren’t good enough. Arsenal need an absolutely massive financial input to get back into the top four. Period. Look around the club and objectively try and find “the future” from within. Arsenal have nothing internally that can solve the problem, therefore it has to come from outside. Arsenal do not have the CL so to attract the better players, one has to offer enourmous wages. Which we can’t do. This would have been avoided if more people stood up when only a handful were Wenger Out. But no. You supported Wenger for too long and this is… Read more »

Goh You are right to say we need a massive investment but we have needed a massive investment to compete since chelsea and their unlimited funds came on the scene. It is no coincidence that since chelsea first won the league in 2005 that apart from one freak season from leicester only the teams with a massive investment, united, city and chelsea, have won the title. All the rest of us are competing with one armed tied behind our backs and if you think it is bad now then think again, it could get a whole lot worse with lower… Read more »

Agreed. It’s strange that anyone thinks it can be done without serious cash. Really strange.

It wasn’t that long ago that City were in the fourth division. The fourth! Now they are being called the greatest team in the premiership. Likewise, Chelsea were perennial under achievers who Arsenal regularly took six points off every season.

It really bothers me that people are so blind. Everton will be the next superclub if Usmanov does invest heavily.

Within two seasons, Arsenal will probably hover around 8/9 in the league.

Pierre

Goh Emery is not a clown.. He is just the wrong person for the job at this particular time. Someone should have asked themselves when appointing Emery, what do we need to make this work.. He wants to play a completely different style of football but we do not have the right players to make it work and insufficient funds. Alarm bells should have been ringing and they should have taken a step back and altered their approach when hiring the new manager. Emery looks a worried man on the touchline and rightly so. Wenger’s success at the club in his first 8 years built up the expectation at the club and as Thierry Henry has said, we missed the opportunity to capitalise on the invincibles success.. Any player in the world Would have come to arsenal back then.

Wenger got the blame but was it a case of the owner not being ambitious enough… Its looking that way now.

Come on.

This is completely wrong. We have the second highest paid player in the PL.

The wages Auba, Mykhi, Lacazette earn put them in the top tier of PL earners.

The financial outlay hasn’t been the issue in recent years….the quality of recruitment has.

I think that the pain of the defeat is getting the better of many of you here – lashing out at players and venting like someone cut you up on a roundabout. This will take time. Whilst Wenger was the manager, he took most of the flak when we lost games (and I include myself as one of his biggest critics) but we also knew that after the major surgery of removing Wenger we were never going to get up off the theatre table and run a marathon. The bigger the problem, the longer the recovery. I don’t expect us… Read more »

On that first goal conceded yesterday obviously Bellerin didn’t have a clue what he was doing but also Big Papa Sokratis was poor as well.

After Bellerin left the team in the lurch with his brainless positional play from then on Pedro should have been picked up by Sokratis. He was in his area. Sokratis didn’t react at all and was painfully off the pace watching on.

I haven’t given Emery 10 games. My decision was made after the recruitment drive in the summer. Clearly Unai didn’t really have a plan…that hasn’t changed.

You have to ask yourself this. Did Emery actually believe this pile of dogshit was the team he wanted to take into his debut season?

The answer is yes he did. He recruited them.

Sorry, but Unai IS a clown.

Barkley’s chance after Chelsea scored their first goal.

Kante ran off Sokratis with ease. The big fella left standing again caught out.

you are acting like emery had 200m to do a ‘re build job. he had 70m to sort the team out. 70m will buy you 1 WC player. You can take your pick from the limited players that moved this summer. Emerys approach has been more of, let’s see what I currently have cause the club has given him a certain amount of time before he it’s decided if he’s the man to go forward. If the board had your thinking we would be changing managers faster than Chelsea…

One positive from the first 2 games is Matteo Guendouzi.

Bit early to say, but looks like he could become world class.

Sven is responsible for recruitment, but Emery still gets a say.

For example, i dont earn £6m pa as the manager of Arsenal but I could tell we needed a much higher calibre of CB to partner Sokratis (Shouldve sold Mustafi & Chambers to fund it)

Its clear we needed a much better CM in there than Xhaka or Elneny

Its clear we desperately needed wide players.

In the second half we came out in a dilemma. We weren’t sure whether we should go for the win or go for the point. In the end it was six of one and half a dozen of the other. And you can’t really afford to do that in football. We need to be a little more assertive and decisive in future games.

Countryboy

Thoughts on the game for Emery 1. Tactical Flexibility: Pass mark in changing personnel. Not too sure about in-game tactics though. Ramsey should have come on as a CM in a 433 to neutralize Chelsea overloading the midfield. Selection: Iwobi choice a masterstroke. In the big games where defensive solidity is required, Montreal-Iwobi partnership is the way to go. Also offered enough options if we had been more clinical from the box. Xhakas choice was offensively a disaster. Torreira should have started. It really was a waste of a game changing substitution. I mean why start a player everyone and… Read more »

The fact that we went for an ex Dortmund player says it all when it comes to sokrates. Emery was clear about wanting a winger, we didn’t get one. But it’s the environment he chose to work in. You don’t play someone like sven millions and then tell him to go fk himself when he recommends a has been defender…

Emery cannot rub onto the pitch and covert them but it’s obviously his game plan (with the amount of cutbacks we made) that created those openings and our supposedly top forwards couldn’t hit the target from 8 yards with open goals.
