Decision time on Ramsey

by .

IMG_2951.JPG

Well, it’s less than a week ’til deadline day slams shut almost 20 days earlier than usual, and there are still a number of items to be resolved.

What the fu*k are we doing with the back 4 would be a pretty pressing one. We’re apparently shipping Calum Chambers out on loan to Fulham, which makes sense if he’s not getting games with us, but I did hope he’d done enough to stay with us this year. His form in the back half of the season was very positive, he’s excellent in a defence that needs confidence on the ball and I really do admire his new beard and hair combo.

Will Emery look to move on Mustafi? Or are we going to stick with Mavrapanos, Mustafi, Sokratis, Koscielny, and roll with 5 options this season? Or will we see movement for a more experienced name like Vida?

As it stands, our group of centre backs looks a little weak, but I guess for the first time in a while we’ll be at the mercy of a system versus the hope that individual talent can pull the players through. The sum of the parts is a theory many average clubs adopt and it works perfectly well. I have to say, I was slightly sad to see Yerry Mina go to Everton for £32m.

Our major headache comes in the shape of Aaron Ramsey. The club need to make moves to shift him, or we need to pray the exec team has a plan up their sleeves. City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all sniffing around, no doubt armed with a deadline day pity bid. I was particularly sad to here Pep G talk of the need for a midfielder. Arteta and Ramsey had a great time together when they were paired back in the day, and it wouldn’t be wild to imagine the two linking up again (in a big fuck you to Ivan for this summers shennanigans).

His agency has been quashing so-called insiders hot takes on the situation on Twitter. I’d imagine they’re keen to make sure the world doesn’t think Aaron is holding the club to ransom… when the reality is that’ll be exactly what they’re doing otherwise he’d have exited by now, or he’d have signed a new deal. I had heard much earlier in the summer from a very good place that his agent was very keen on using the Ozil deal as leverage, the fact anyone at their agency would deny that was top of mind is quite frankly ludicrous.

Sure, there might be a strategy to get Aaron to the last year of his deal, but no one makes money that way, and in the world of football, the only Christmas bonus that matters is this years. Why would you push your injury prone client into seeing out the final year of his deal? It’s hugely risky, especially as the stand out years aren’t exactly plentiful with Aaron. Strike while the iron is hot and build would be my view. They also don’t know Emery, they have no idea how he’d treat a snub because let’s be real, the new Arsenal guys could just sit him on the bench for a year to make a point.

We’ll see though.

I find it amusing that the fans are already in, ‘never liked that slag anyway’ mode. Outside Nacho, he was a star in a shower of shite last season. I don’t quite abide by the weird internet cult he has behind him. When I read people talk about Ramsey’s achievements in the game, it makes me weep a little inside. He’s a solid player who has survived 10 years in an unstructured mess. I think he could be exceptional in a great system, but I don’t think he’s irreplaceable. He’d unlikely be allowed the freedom to be the all-action hero under Emery, so it’ll be interesting to see where he chooses head if he does go.

I kind of hoped he’d stay to be the captain at a club built around his talents… but hey, who can deny a man a change of scenery.

Let’s just hope the club has a decent backup plan. I’d be surprised if his energy and drive could be found with internal promotions.

Finally, a bit of a gripe about TV rights. What the fuck is football doing with all these fragmented TV deals? Community Shield is on ESPN+ (an app), EL is on TNT, NBC has the Prem rights except sometimes you need their shitty Prem pass offering, I don’t even think we get League Cup. I know it’s the same issue in the UK. BT are pulling back, Sky has some games, there’s that new disruptor channel Eleven Sports who have some action. It’s a fucking joke. Even if you’re a cable buyer, you still need to buy bolt-ons. Is it cheaper for anyone?

This fragmentation of TV just pushes people to do things illegally. At times last year, I had to stream illegally for things I’d paid for because the services were shite. It’s unreal.

Just give me a season ticket for the TV. That is all that is needed. Or someone get Reed Hastings on the blower and tell him Netflix should buy the rights and make it real easy. Or Apple now they’re a trillion dollar company.

Anyway, moan over.

Marc, “Please tell me what the “current regime” should do to deal with Ramsey if no one is making a bid” He’s in the driving seat since he’s in the last year of his contract…I get your point. Mistakes were made last year no doubt and the precedent of Arsenal caving into Ozil doesn’t make it better. However, he has to be sold if he doesn’t sign, even if it’s for an “undisclosed fee” Now it’s about mitigating a loss. That’s why I would blame the current set-up if they can redeem something from an already bad situation. What do… Read more »

Usmanov doesn’t have to sell. He’s richer than Kroenke. He has some stake in a secure business in England. Arsenal’s stock isn’t going down since we wont relegated. However he may consider that his 540 million can be better spent in another club partnering with his good friend Moshiri. It’s sort of Ironic that the Uzbek-Russian businessman who has been attacked by certain posters here of being corrupt is the only one standing in the way of Arsenal disappearing into the belly of a family’s portfolio forever. That Wilshere prank was a bit too obvious.

Wilshere was on to it pretty early because the actor interviewer was hamming it up too much from the beginning.

Would say that was a gentle initiation for Wilshere at West Ham.

Yeah could have been easier the first two matches Terraloon.

And that’s even seeing Chelsea as not in the same bracket overall as Man City.

But who knows. As others have said may be able to get something from either of them early doors.

Liverpool and this Chinese company – Fenway Sports Group?

All of the following teams have been doing pretty well since they were bought by a rich fellow. Things are not going to change at Arsenal. Plus fans will ALWAYS have the power to overthrown the owner they don’t like. Just by not going to the home games and any owner will be forced to sell.

The only scenario that makes sense is 1- Chambers asked to leave the club permanently as he wants to play, and this is a compromise. 2- Emery sees significant flaws and wants to give him a season to prove himself Still very odd. Im not a huge Chambers fan, and wouldve sold both him and Mustafi, but I would get rid of both Mustafi & Holding before I did CHambers. I would also say a loan would benefit Mavropanos far more. As fans, if an owner is overseeing success at our club, we don’t really care about financial transparency. If on the hand, we have an owner who appears to accept mediocrity and by owning 100% he doesn’t have to answer to any shareholders, then it makes some of us slightly anxious.

I’ve never once heard Emery mention Welbeck. I think they will both go.

Think Nketiah is in line to get Welbecks share of playing time this season.

Buying a player in June isn’t a huge deal but signing a handful before August with no clear plans for a deadline day trolley dash for whatever shit we can find is *almost* unheard of in the last decade

I know that Pogba to Barca in less than 3 days until the TW in the EPL will close and Manure wouldn’t even be able to spend their money is most likely a click bait.
It does however give me that distant hope that Barca might want to raise some money for the French midfielder, by possibly selling Dembele to us. Imagine if that’s the gift that Kroenke has prepared to ease the fans anger over the news that he’s bought the club. lol

That’s a worry, Nketiah is just a pup. I was hoping for a rejuvenated Welbeck under Emery.

The amount of news waiting to happen in the next 3 days:
Sales of at least 3 to 5 players;
Ramsey’s contract situation;
Kroenke’s bid;
Possible transfer in?!
Gazidis’ future?

I don’t think rejuvenation is what welbeck needs.

The guy is full of energy. What he lacks greatly is footballing ability!

at least those fans will have made a bit of profit. don’t really know how much 0. something percent gets you though…

“Wait isn’t this the situation in EVERY top club in the EPL at the moment? Why are AST acting like what they have said isn’t the exact same situation as it is in Man City, Manure, Chelsea and Pool?!”

Because Stan don’t care about football!! Repeat after me : he don’t care about football.

I dont think you will see any difference to our points total whether Welbeck or Nketiah play.

Welbeck is terrible.

I wouldve liked us to sign a quality wide player if we are going to sell Perez & Welbeck, but thats not gonna happen this summer.

Think we may bring a CB in, which doesnt make much sense. We have 6 CBs already, if we want to sign one we need to sell a couple, not arrange silly loans.

So far, he has not invested a penny in the club. If he takes the club private, all his activities – e.g. asset stripping, raking… Read more »

is this the same Kroenke that sanctioned the purchase of two strikers over 50m pounds?

Xhaka, Mustafi for 35m each. 17m for a Perez who subsequently did not play much.

Arsenal advertised themselves as a self sufficient club, now that Man City and PSG have changed the landscape we want Kroenke to bring out his personal cash to play.
