Exciting talents emerge and we’re only 3 games in

by .

DjMipXiXgAEYFqL

I have been out of the game for a few days, taking in some Tenessee. Amazing, that even when rocking the Smokey’s, you find Arsenal fans wandering around. We are truly a global powerhouse when it comes to fans.

So we’ve now dropped 3 games of preseason, and whilst it’s hard to draw aggressive conclusions you’re willing to die for, one thing can’t be denied, the team has changed.

Some early observations, it’s quite clear we signed Leno because he’s sharper and very good on the ground. We play out of the back much more frequently and it appears the hoof is only reserved for mega danger moments. That’s so refreshing to watch. The German has a nice range of passing, I get very nervous watching him play balls through the middle, but when the team is built around giving him options, it works.

That said, I felt that our transitions through the back were clunky at times. The team is still getting used to the pressure associated with a system and we’ll see unforced errors particularly in the beginning. But damn, when the players get it right, it’s a spectacle. Some of the movement was so fluid, real dream-like stuff at times.

The PSG game was fun to watch, but we were given space to run wild. The pressure test comes in the Premier League, where we’ll be pressed and rattled. That said, you can’t knock a great friendly result. 5-1 against the richest team in the world is not to be sniffed at. Could have been 10 if it weren’t for Buffon.

I thought Guendouzi looked very impressive. He isn’t shy, he wants to ball, and his range of aggressive passing through the lines is very, very exciting. What he has that Xhaka doesn’t is pace over 10m and bags of strength. I loved his work rate and I thought he looked far more experienced than his 19 years on this planet would suggest. Sven really has uncovered a gem there. Imagine that, 2 DMs in the side that want to play there?!

It’s also clear that however the backline works out this season, we have a disgraceful amount of talent going forward. Ozil looked very fit and focused. I’m expecting big things from Mikki. I’m hoping to see a lot of development with Iwobi and decision making. We’re also going to do some damage with Auba and Lacazette. Goals are gold, and Emery is very lucky to have such a potent force this season.

Final part of this review, because my hand is hurting… Smith Rowe looks a bit tasty, no? I love his leggy style of play, reminded me of Paul Pogba the way he’d control the space around the ball, turn, and he’d be away. He has bundles of creativity and that little bit of youthful fearlessness that sees him try the sublime (that goal). It’s early days, but he looks the biz, has the frame for it too. Oh, and it was great to see Eddie score. Imagine Emery bringing through an English striker?

Right, over and out. A great few days for the Arsenal!

Look at that. We disagree but didn’t resort to abuse or name calling. That’s a first for this site! Bravo us.

Looking at Chelsea’s squad there is not one realistic player that Chelsea would let go in a Ramsey deal that I would be interested in seeing at Arsenal. Still a couple of top players but overall their squad looks tired. Zouma was mentioned and out of all the realistic options to have in a Ramsey deal then he would most probably be of some interest but that is a real stretch. Hasn’t progressed from rave reviews as a kiddie. As well as the Chelsea squad looking tired and not all that it could have been Cyndi Lauper sitting there in… Read more »

Cesc story is really a sad one. Especially in those years when Barca was running public campaings about our players through their players.

Pretending to be class act while acting classless.

Liked Barca before that really much, but lost all respect for them since then.

They are equal to RM now, maybe even worse.

Sorry, I said Zuma not Zouma. He’s still young isn’t he…I think he could be a player given a chance and under the right manager. I’d look into a deal for him and Ramsay. The Welshman is instantly replaceable. There isn’t a stand out aspect to his game.

Ivan

Jim and GoH – fair play to you 2. Nice to see some adult level of debate.

Remember that cunt Reina trying to put a Barca jersey on him?

There is too much criticism of individual players such as Ramsey, Xhaka and Ozil and not enough about the defensive system and the balance of team. Hopefully Emery will be able to resolve these problems in the passage of time. Some posters are far too busy attaching blame to individuals many of whom are actually quite decent players. The priority is now to improve the chemistry and solidity of our backline and not to be too hasty in offloading players who might actually improve under a new head coach. At the moment I believe that Arsenal have quite a strong… Read more »

Just catching up on the replay of the Psg game. Unai would be keen to spot the lapses in defences (to a weak Psg as some put it here), pick up decision making issues during attacks, and fix those waste of shots. Mikki didn’t run with his guy and gave up near the byline!! The guy crossed and Leno caught it but could have been different. Bellerin had no clue about the winger huggi the line who ran onto an excellent thru ball. Luckily it was wrongly called offside. The Kolas slide tackle was stupid. Poor LB no pace it… Read more »

Cesc is today’s pariah.
Ramsay into second place.
And I guess Xhaka takes the podium for third?

I’m still not convinced Laca is right for us. I’d really like to see Martial investigated as a potential.

Ivan

Re Ramsey. Id really like for him to grow up and elevate his game to a level we need him to be but kinda lost hope on that. Even in PSG frendly all that i dislike in him was so evident to see. When he bursts into box all he see is goal. No forward thinking, situaltional awareness or prepairing him self to shoot or assist based on his own and defenders position. He just push ball forward hoping for opening to shoot. Its like he is less talented Ozil alter ego. Ozil would like to glide between lines, avoiding… Read more »

He’s 28 now so he will only get worse. It’s like he’s seen a Gerrard highlight reel and tried to base his career on it shot for shot.

Seriously, if Chelsea want him, we should sell and try and get something back. Leaving Ramsay hanging like Sanchez will backfire again.

Arsenal have to get more ruthless.

If we are all being honest 99% of everything we discuss on here is pure conjecture, none of us work for Arsenal, we don’t know what really went on (or goes on) behind closed doors, from what little information we do get we piece together a narrative that suits our own bias whether that have been pro or anti Wenger (at the time). We saw it a lot when he was in charge at the club, a piece on information would come out and the pro Wenger people would twist it one way and the anti Wenger people would twist… Read more »

ES “I think that Arsenal have now resolved the defensive midfield position, because there are players recruited such as Torreira and Guendouzi who are now providing mobility, anticipation and defensive qualities which were absent in recent years.” You would hope improvement and surely there will be improvement because Arsenal have been playing a deep lying playmaker in front of the defence for a couple of seasons now previously. I am not biased. Cesc was brilliant. He wasn’t the best. He also pissed on Arsenal the first chance he got.

Arsenal went through a really weird period of giving want away players the arm band! I think from Vieira the next person to get it who didn’t want to leave was Arteta?

Cesc Appeal

If Chelsea really want him them fleece them, everyone knows and expects to pay more from a rival. We would expect to if we went after Martial, they should if they want Ramsey.

Take the money and buy Kovacic, I don’t mind Ramsey, but you’ve upgraded there because I think Kovacic has the potential to be one of the best midfielders around if he gets the game time and is made one of the main players in the midfield.

Its odd isn’t it?? Giving a player that wants out of the club the captains armband? A captain should be someone who is willing to do anything for the club, to push the team on .. not someone who is looking to leave as soon as possible.

Rambo Ramsey

What has been missing in midfield particularly over last two years is “anticipation” and “pace”.

Players like Wilshire, Coquelin, Elneny and Xhaka lack pace and that is something that Torreira, Guendouzi and Maitland-Niles do have.

Personally I would not write off Ramsey and Xhaka as many do because they
are decent players albeit not necessarily in defensive department. If you sell
them I am willing to bet that you will struggle to replace them with major
upgrades costing double the transfer fee.

Jim Lahey

@CA – ” If you see a tough tackling leader at CB with the armband it makes you feel like the team is in far better shape than if so wide playmaker who wants to leave is given it because it undermines your confidence in the manager.” I totally agree, I would think there is a lot of psychology involved with football and how other teams perceive you. Also another point is when Jamie Redknapp would speak about that early-mid 2000s team.

I remember him saying that being in the cramped Highbury tunnel looking over at the Arsenal team with every player being over 6 foot he felt like they had already lost! And that was in the tunnel before the game!

Rambo Ramsey

Jim, maybe its a play to the ego? Make the player feel really wanted. Maybe experience as a ‘Captain’ in your CV helps when you go for a coaching/managing role later.

Stuff like this is a lot simpler in other professions. ‘I want to leave Microsoft for Amazon’. ‘Don’t, we’ll offer you freedom and a team of your choosing to run’. ‘Done’.

If Ramsey did go and we got a player like Kovacic a Torreira, Kovacic central midfield pairing actually has the potential to do the job without having to add other CMs etc like we usually have to do to cover for Xhaka etc.

I am going to be controversial about Ramsey Transfer saga. Personally I would not sell him this summer even if he does not sign a new contract. I would certainly not sell him to Chelsea for £30 million. The situation now is entirely different from last summer when we had “several players” in their final year of contract and a potential loss of over £100 million in transfer fees not to mention inflated wage demands. When you think about it we don’t really need Ramsey. I mean he’s a CAM masquerading as a CM and he’s not good enough as the CAM. The manager is already saying how he isn’t impressed about the pace of their one touch passing and movement and Ramsey would be a liability in a team like that. I am even afraid for Kante. Point is though we shouldn’t be afraid to lose players like Ramsey thinking they’re irreplaceable or it’d be difficult to find better. It wouldn’t be in the slightest. Anyone who brings up potential transfer fees of replacements as an excuse to keep a player is just that an excuse. No need to get bent over by the likes of Aaron Ramsey when we can do better

Abi

Kovacic for Ramsey? Wow! We might as well get rid of the entire squad and replace with the likes of Zouma. I’m sometimes gratified that none of the Einstein here have a say in running The Arsenal.

Cesc Appeal

No one in the team is irreplaceable.

The only player we would have difficulty upgrading on is Aubameyang.

No worries about replacing anyone else, we have a good manager, good coaches and a good recruiting team now.

Not sure about Kovacic. He’s 24 and still can’t get in ahead of Rakitic for Croatia, who is nothing more than a good player.

He simply can’t be that amazing if he’s not strongly knocking on the door on both the teams he plays for. Sense a bit of classic Croatian overrating going on.

Terraloon

Ramsey has value that’s for sure. If he had two years left then would be worth north of £40 million although reading some of the comments about his worth you would think he was worth less that £1. If he signs a new deal the debate is all over but all this talk of getting more than £30 million at this point in time is just fantasy. Paulinho – wow. You rate Rakitic that low. Man walked in Barca midfield and remained there. Barca offloaded Cesc and got him.

Agree on Kovacic part, he is unproven jet, but good gamble like Thiago Alcantara. Good players unfortunate to play with some of best MF-s in game so their bench time wasnt really reflecting their lack of talent.

Marko

that Jan/Feb a few years back when we had Coquelin/Ramsey in the middle?

Wow two whole months really?

I don’t get why you referenced England by the way they were kind of shite at the world cup more than lucky and had just Henderson deep with Alli and Lingard ahead of him. Kovacic was good enough to get a move to Madrid in the first place and it’s more of a testament to the qualities of Modric and Kroos and Casemiro that he hasn’t played more. He’d flourish here I think. Just needs games and a proper role in a team to get to a high level

Cesc These more responsibly defensive midfielders don’t have to be hacks or as portrayed as. As Marko said Torreira can play, Nzonzi as an example can pass the ball as well. Considering how bad we’ve been the last few years in defence and considering it looks like we’re not going to make anymore signings in that area then playing with two DM’S might just be a way of saving our season potentially. Especially if it looks like our full backs will be given opportunities to attack. Otherwise Torreira will have to be doing a fuck load all by himself this season

It is nothing more than a defence mechanism because Wenger did not give a shit about buying in a CDM so they have to make out like it is not important or risk being seen as criticising Wenger. Don’t give a shit what they say in response either, totally true.

Spurs played with a solid base of Wanyama, Dembele and it worked very well, Chelsea played a solid base of Kante, Matic and it worked very well.

We don’t have any fit and experienced quality center back in our squad, so two DMs might be the need of the hour. Torreira and Guendouzi/AMN partnership as a double pivot is worth trying. Ozil, Auba, Laca and hopefully a new winger in front of the double pivot should be enough offensively.

Rambo Ramsey

Agree, Paulinho.

People just see the Madrid tag and go ‘Oh, he must be special’.

Its understandable that Kovacic hasn’t played much for club and country. You don’t displace Kroos nor Modric and he is not a DM.

Also have to add, Rakitic is world class and deserves to be ahead of Kovacic in Croatia. All these CMs though are better than Ramsey which is why we shouldn’t hesitate to get Kovacic if Ramsey goes. He’s available

“France won the World Cup with two responsibly defensive midfielders.” Kante – yes, but Matuidi is very good going forward which he does often, player like Vidal, offers a whole lot in dribbling with the ball, has huge step as well. Emre Can is another one like him. They can do pretty much everything. In that regard Matuidi is closer to Ramsey than Nzonzi surely. Pogba as well but he’s a bit more offensive.
