Interesting Leno stats + news round-up

Bobby Pires didn’t take long to turn from Wenger sycophant, to Unai Emery #1 fan.

“The best signing for me is Unai Emery, the manager. Of course I believe in the players, and especially the new players,”

What. A. Creep.

Last April:

“I want Arsene to extend his contract for two or three more seasons, I’ve made that very clear. I think we can challenge for the league next year.”

Back in the days when people would say, ‘yeah, Bobby Pires, Invincible, says Wenger should stay but Pete from Le Grove says nah’, I always said you need to look out for the open hands of explayers. All those who vehemently pursued Wenger’s back passage wanted a job at the club, begging via compliments in the press.

Italian press is saying that the Ivan G move to Italy is complicated by the fact their financial offer is less than he’s on now… I mean, that’s not really a complication is it?

Anyway, Arsenal denied there’s contact with Milan, and as I said yesterday, it’d be a proper weird move.

The press is linking Petr Cech to Chelsea. Yep, Chelsea. I don’t really understand why they’d take their keeper back unless they wanted him as a coach. Not only is he not up for replacing Courtois ability wise, he’s not a Sarri type of keeper. If you can’t play with the ball at your feet, you’re not going to fit his crazy systems.

In other interesting news, there seem to be a lot of pictures of Emery hanging out with AMN. I always wonder whether that’s a purposeful move, or that he just looks proper good in training pictures? I’d love this to be a major breakout season for the midfielder, he’s such a talent and that high energy would look great in a disciplined system. I wonder where he’s going to play him? Will he be jockeying with Xhaka for position? Will he be back-up for Aaron Ramsey? Is he in the mix as a DM? I mean, surely he’d be a better option than Chambers there.

There’s some scary stats doing the rounds that seem to indicate that Leno has the 3rd worst save efficiency in Europe amongst big teams (here).  This gives a little more light on how the numbers came about. I think there are a lot people who are quite worried about Leno and his ability to pull us out of the ‘WHY R OUR KEEPERS SO SHIT’ hell that we’ve been in since 2006. I’m taking solace in the fact it seems hard to judge keepers with hard numbers because there are so many factors in being successful if you’re a keeper. But, it’s hard not to be a touch worried about a keeper who conceded 16% more goals than he should have.

I’m guessing that Sven has a system that maybe sheds more light on Leno, and that maybe they’ve used a bigger data set to come to the conclusion he’s worth a punt (quite the punt as well). I have nightmares about this sort of gamble, remember we signed Viviano? I was told we’d purposefully picked a keeper we thought was underachieving, that we could develop. I can’t remember the details, all I remember is the picked a keeper right out the middle of the stats pack. The bad old days.

Right, that’s all I have today, see you in the comments.

Of course the big clubs are going to win the FA Cup when their reserves are stronger than many first choice teams ..pillock.

Freddylekgunner

Ramsey can fuck off even for 15m. Has energy but not to good use. He and Giroud frustrated me so much.

Freddylekgunner

Why are people worried about Ramsey leaving? We were praying for him to get injured so that the old c**t drop him not so long ago.

Chika

So we played a friendly against Crawley earlier today behind closed doors.

Go on, whip those boys into shape, Emery!

Chika

I’m surprised the Ramsey situation has dragged this long. Would be more surprising if he eventually leaves after the whole drag.

He’s a player that can be easily replaced.

Freddylekgunner

Chika what’s the score against Crawley? Can’t seem to find any right now.

Same old you – maybe you should pick up against the poster who was saying no one cared about winning it.

Why are people hating Andre Gomes on here ? just cause he had a bad season at Barcelona ?
From what I saw of him at Valencia , hes good value for money . We can buy him even if we dont sell Ramsey .

Ja_Gunner

Nobody thinks a 4 4 2 diamond formation can work?

Its the only formation that suiys all these number 10s we have plus two strikers.

I would rather have both on the field for most games, then tweak things away to the top 3 or so.

You would have to trust Emery on Gomes, but it would be a big call for him and invite a lot of pressure.

If we sold Ramsey for £40 Million, got Gomes for £15 Million that would leave £25 Million to combine with the sales of players like Welbeck, Ospina etc to go out and buy an actual winger I suppose.

It seems Oxlade damaged every major ligament in his knee; ACL. PCP and both lateral ligaments.
It those reports are true. He’s a dead weight because there’s no way he’s returning at the same player.

It will be a massive coup if we manage to sell Cech back to Chelsea .

As someone that was born in Crawley….I wouldn’t get excited by any scoreline.

Trash team.

WengerEagle

Andre Gomes is trash, nowhere near the calibre of player we should be going for.

Worst midfielder to play for Barcelona in quite some time.

WengerEagle

Allison fee is outrageous, just like the VVD one.

You have to tip your hat to Liverpool though, they’re making seriously ambitious moves in the transfer market and regardless of how the season pans out, have given that side of things a real go.

Hard to imagine that they won’t be pushing City all the way with Keita, Fabinho, Allison and likely a CAM coming in as well as holding onto the spine that took them to the CL Final.

I believe the game was about Emery getting his players to try out some of his ideas in a game.

Thats why it was closed.

“I suppose the thing is Oxlade was actually starting to become an interesting player where Wilshere just floated from shit to average when fit.”

Not to make trouble but I honestly think Oxlade’s best was Wilshere’s average. In terms of talent they weren’t even close

WE, RH

If you played football to any level whether amateur or professionally you would understand what it means to succeed at a global club like Valencia and earn a move to an even bigger global club like Barca.

If we sign Gomes for 15m he could be the coup of the decade or I could eat my words.will take a punt on the former though.

azed

If we sign Gomes for 15m he could be the coup of the decade or I could eat my words.will take a punt on the former though.

I agree. For you to sign for Barca at 23, there must be some talent especially when you consider that he was a started for Valencia.

Also we paid 12M for Walcott a century ago and 16M for Calum Chambers paying 15 for Gomes cannot be a bad deal, we can always sell him to Westham for the same price in a few years time.

Cesc Appeal

‘Not to make trouble but I honestly think Oxlade’s best was Wilshere’s average. In terms of talent they weren’t even close’ What Wilshere are you talking about though? The 2011 one? Because when he did play subsequent to his return from that injury aside from a few bright moments I thought he was at best average and that he actually unbalanced our side. Whatever the 4-1-MESS-1 season was the statistics actually showed he was a massively disruptive influence to us. Gomes was actually great at Valencia. I believe there is a player in there waiting for the right mentorship. some illustrious super stars were super shit playing for barca. he has tge strength, height and stamina to succeed as a midfielder. at 15M, I won’t complain

Emiratesstroller

I have to question how Liverpool are financing the three purchases they have
or will make in transfer market.

So far they have not sold anyone and historically their transfer business has been a correlation between sales and purchases with the occasional small
deficit which is presumably covered by small profits/sponsorship revenues they generate.

Their bank balance is historically one of the smallest in EPL, but interestingly
they do have a £100 million overdraft facility, which presumably has covered
short term spending.

They have also commitments presumably to rebuild their stadium.

Here are details of Liverpool’s transfer business in season 2017-8 according to

For what it’s worth I think Ramsey will STAY unless he gets an Özil type of mega-deal most likely from one of Man United, Man City, Chelsea, Barça, Bayern or Real Madrid. He is a good solid professional, who seems to have put his injury laden days behind him. He could become a legend at this club if he wanted to… Emery has very cleverly placed his cards on the table for Ramsey to see, by getting his transfers done early. If we had done the same when we had RvP and Cesc, I reckon they would still be here.… Read more »

Ramsey would be out of here so quick if he were offered the kinds of terms he’s looking for elsewhere, him not re-signing until now is proof of that.

I reckon he wouldn’t give a shit about Emery and the changes at Arsenal if someone offered him £200k per week. But he will not be offered that from anyone.

I would want him to stay though.

Cesc Appeal

Ramsey is in a more difficult position than Sanchez and Ozil were last summer, they were dealing with a completely weak and ineffectual Wenger whereas Ramsey knows he has to play this more carefully. He wants a big pay rise, obviously, but he also knows that if he doesn’t get it here he won’t be allowed to wait it out until January because the management is too weak and lazy to do anything, he will be sold. His wage demands will be hit by the fact a buying club has bought him as well as opposed to getting him on… Read more »

The transfer window closes in exactly 3 weeks (9th August).

If we’re to sell Ramsey to another PL club, we have to make the decision now and get the word out to agents. If a foreign club want him, there would be until the end of August, but bearing in mind British players are usually overpriced and don’t assimilate culturally, there may be limited interest if we’re demanding big money.

Let’s hope Sanllehi is in control and we don’t get played again.

It’s going to be brilliant isn’t it? Carnoustie is a monster, but if it remains baked then Tiger has a better chance than he otherwise would. I’m a huge Woods fan so hoping there.

Always so hard to judge an Open winner I find, it’s the most unpredictable major we have. Brooks again has good game for it, Fleetwood another who could boss things. Got a sneaking feeling Mcilroy might have a resurgence, and he bloody needs to. Day one will tell us everything.

Sancho Monzorla

Tiger needs to get back to winning majors and furtively banging semi-attractive white women, pronto.

China

If anyone is willing to offer over 40m for Ramsey just flog him sharpish

He’s a good player but not that good and he needs a tonne of coaching to either fit into our system or the whole midfield needs shunting around just to accommodate him

I am not convinced he would listen to coaching and be disciplined and he’s not good enough for us to build our whole midfield around him. If he goes, spend the money on a serious winger and we’ll be a better team

Futballrush

First post probably since the summer we signed Per, Giroud, Podolski. Arsenal’s excitement right now is bringing the boys out the woodwork.

Its weird on the one hand people say our players were stagnating or underperforming because of Wenger. Basically implying that take Wenger out ofthe picture and things will improve.

China I think Ramsey will be sold too. Only because the starting slots in the mid have all been taken. Assuming we play a 4-3-3 and we have Xhaka (extended), Torreira (latest shiny new gadget) and Ozil (extended on mad $$), there is no space for Ramsey. Even in a 4-2-3-1, where there is an additional slot in the mid, Emery will have to decide who plays on the middle and I will think it will be Ozil over Ramsey. Of course the FA Cup has been downgraded. Anyone who feels otherwise is either blind or too young to remember what the competition is really all about. As a spectacle, the FA Cup Final still ranks highly. Nevertheless, it is no longer seen as a priority by the elite clubs unless they reach the latter stages. I feel so sorry for him. Multi-millionaire for kicking a ball around, getting to travel the world has a few snide remarks made about him and it’s a real story of tragedy.

Giroud is a strange one. He seems to play as a front line defender for France and a kind of decoy for the wide players. Very ineffective as a striker but it all seems to work in that system.

lol, I doubt giroud is bothered about it. He knows what he brings to the team. so any manager picking him, expects him to play only in one way. Also he’s a millionaire, and every one has critic’s, so it seems you are losing more sleep over the matter than giroud himself.

gonsterous

also all the people who matter (family and friends) will be congratulating him on the WC win. and critic’s when faced one on one never tell you, you are shit or you have to do this or that. they only ever talk about it on the Tele. By your own criteria , Alex Hleb was shit too at Barcelona ? So was Cesc Fabregas ? sometimes players have a bad time gelling into a new club . Doesn’t necessarily make them trash. The way Barcelona played , he was square peg in round hole . A lack of knowledge of what his role was, it wasnt defined in the system.

Black Hei Arsenal could of course play a midfield diamond behind two strikers, but that could mean sacrificing either Ozil or Mkhitaryan in midfield. Torreira could play as the defensive midfielder with Xhaka playing alongside Ramsey in central midfield. Based on what occurred last season with injuries that is not beyond realm of possibility. Only Xhaka managed 30 + starts in EPL. Arsenal have at the moment 7 midfielders if you add in Elneny and AMN to cover 4 positions. “Vermalen at times was a beast of a defender. Injury is his biggest problem not talent”

Vermaelen had problems with his decision making too many times when he was at Arsenal.

What fans loved him for at the start of his stint that being robust defending became less favourable over time when he kept on giving away unnecessary freekicks in dangerous areas and selling himself.

For Vermaelen read Mustafi.

Maybe it was a coaching problem for both of these players because they were and are plagued with the same weakness.

My personal opinion is that Arsenal have already COMPLETED their transfer business in this transfer window UNLESS Ramsey leaves, which according to my information is unlikely to happen. We have a full squad including just about a complete complement of home grown players. At end of last season we had 24 registered players with a place for a specialist right back open following departure of Debuchy in January. There have been sofar three departures with Mertesacker, Cazorla and Wilshire and five additions this summer. In midfield they have – Fabinho and Keita who are going to be starters, then Hendo, Wijnaldum, Milner, Grujic, Chambo.
